‘Mersal’ controversy: Criticising GST is perfectly legitimate, says Shatrughan Sinha

Former actor and BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha has extended his support to actor Vijays Tamil film “Mersal”, which had some controversial dialogues about GST and the Digital India programme. He says people should support the movie and not remain defensive about the “perfectly legitimate issue”.

“Why are we so defensive about a perfectly legitimate issue that has been raised in the Tamil film regarding healthcare and the GST? As entertainers and actors with powerful voices we have a certain duty towards the public to make them aware of socio-political issues,” Sinha, who’s is a BJP member of Parliament from Patna, said.

He added: “Why is it such a crime if Vijay who is a very powerful Tamil actor, reminds us that the poor in our country desperately need healthcare?”

“Mersal” was embroiled in controversy after the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded the removal of certain dialogues which take a dig at the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Digital India.

However, Sinha feels that the protestors of the movie don’t represent the BJP’s official view.

“Has anyone heard the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) or any of the top leaders commenting on the issue? It is only some elements in our party who are eager to prove that they are more loyal than the others,” Sinha said.

“They are the ones jumping in to attack this perfectly harmless and very significant point raised in the film. Instead of attacking Vijay and questioning his credentials we should all take his words seriously and work towards improving healthcare in our country,” he added.

Sinha feels there is no harm in pulling up the government for mistakes.

“We should gracefully accept that demonetisation was a mistake. I was one of the first to point it out that it was not right. So many have lost their jobs, all their savings. Likewise perhaps even the GST is not what it was meant to be,” he said.

“If so, let’s admit out mistake, let’s roll back. Let’s not be ashamed to say we are sorry. Instead of attacking actors and artistes for drawing attention to anomalies in the workings of our democracy, we should applaud them. Valid criticism must be equally welcome from Amar, Akbar and Anthony,” he added.

He believes that the film has received a lot of hype because of BJP.

“Thanks to all the noise that was made over a few dialogues in the film by my overzealous party members, the film has attracted much more attention that it would have otherwise. The makers of ‘Mersal’ must be thankful to the BJP,” he concluded.

Let’s not use CBFC for controversy: Prasoon Joshi

0

A little over two months into his tenure as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) Chairperson, writer-ad guru Prasoon Joshi is a tad disappointed at how the censor board is used as a springboard for controversies. It needs to stop, he says.

His comment comes amidst the row over Tamil film “Mersal”, after certain media reports indicated that the movie’s Telugu version was getting delayed due to the CBFC.

The movie itself has been embroiled in controversy after the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded the removal of certain dialogues which take a dig at the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Digital India.

Joshi told IANS here: “I am not upset, I’m a little disappointed that before you (people) make accusations and allegations, you should check, because such a (certification) process requires sensitivity from both ends.

“Let’s not use CBFC for some commercial reasons or for somebody’s political career. We should not try to use CBFC. It should be respected as much as one respects their own organisation.”

Over the recent years, several filmmakers have locked horns with the censor body over its diktats and demands for cuts, mutes and changes, leading to a brouhaha in the media.

Joshi, who was appointed CBFC chief in August and succeeded the rocky reign of Pahlaj Nihalani, said it’s time to move to “content from controversy”.

“It should be more about the content that drives a film. Why should CBFC be used for a controversy? It is an organisation that consists of people like any other organisation, so why should we be unfair to people who work in CBFC and completely unappreciate the efforts?” he asked.

As far as “Mersal” is concerned, he said it was an “unfair” assumption that the delay in the Telugu version was caused by the CBFC.

“The film fraternity knows that it will take a certain time and the time is clearly mentioned on the official website,” Joshi said, adding that it is disheartening for those in the CBFC who “work hard to ensure the certification process for films is as smooth and fast as possible”.

He also denied that the CBFC asked some changes in the Telugu version of “Mersal”.

“All I would say is that we are sensitive to the filmmakers. I come from the film fraternity, and I know the pain of making films and how much effort goes into making it.

“But on the other hand, we need to also understand that there are people in the certification process who are working hard. Not being appreciative of that and not being cognisant of their time, is also not fair. I think I was a little surprised at it.”

Joshi spoke to IANS on the sidelines of the onging MTV India Music Summit, where he is a mentor.

Telugu version of ‘Mersal’ same as Tamil: Prasoon Joshi

0

The Telugu version of Vijay-starrer “Mersal”, which had some controversial dialogues about GST and the digital India programme, will release without any cuts and muted words –just like the film’s Tamil version, Prasoon Joshi, Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), said on Friday.

The Tamil version was released on Diwali on October 19.

“Why will we delay (the release of Telugu version of ‘Mersal’)? You should respect the process. There are human beings, who sit and work. It’s not a slot machine that you put a card and get a certificate from other side,” Joshi told CNN-News 18.

“There are people, who sit and watch the film. I come from the film world. I know how sensitive and hard it is. Now from controversy we should move to content. The film’s content should speak for itself and not the controversy. Telugu version of the film is exactly the same as its Tamil version,” he added.

Asked whether the film will have any cuts or muted words, Joshi said: “None whatsoever.”

“Mersal” was embroiled in controversy after the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded the removal of certain dialogues which take a dig at the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Digital India.

Directed by Atlee, “Mersal” features Vijay in the roles of a village head, a doctor and a magician. It is doing brisk business at the box office.

The issue got national attention with Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi coming out in support of the movie and taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the demand for removal of dialogues critical of GST in the movie and asked him not to “demon-etise Tamil pride” by such interference.

Petition to revoke censor certificate for ‘Mersal’ dismissed

0

In a major setback for the opponents of actor Vijay starrer Tamil movie “Mersal”, the Madras High Court on Friday dismissed a petition that sought revocation of the film’s censor certificate.

A division bench dismissed the petition filed by lawyer A. Aswathaman, stating that the movie is work of fiction.

The court said it is for the viewers to decide and there is nothing in the movie to warrant a ban.

The court also wondered how a movie’s dialogue would affect a common man.

The petitioner had contended that the movie had wrong information about Goods and Services Tax (GST) and also mocked at the Digital India initiative of the Central Government.

“Mersal” is in the midst of a controversy after the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded the removal of certain dialogues which take a dig at the GST and Digital India.

Directed by Atlee, “Mersal” stars Vijay in the roles of a village head, a doctor and a magician. It is doing brisk business at the box office.

Police complaint against ‘Mersal’ hero Vijay lodged in Madurai

0

A Madurai based advocate has filed a complaint against Tamil actor Vijay over the dialogues in “Mersal”, said a police official.

“A complaint has been received against actor Vijay. An acknowledgement for receipt of the complaint has been issued. No first information report (FIR) had been lodged,” a police official in Anna Nagar police station in Madurai told IANS over phone on Monday.

Temple town Madurai is around 500 km from here.

“Mersal” is in the midst of a controversy after the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded the removal of certain dialogues which take a dig at the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and digital India.

Directed by Atlee, “Mersal” stars Vijay in the roles of a village head, a doctor and a magician. It is doing brisk business at the box office.

BJP’s National Secretary H. Raja and Tamil Nadu BJP President Tamilisai Soundararajan criticised Vijay and the movie for the dialogues critical of GST and Digital India.

The BJP leaders said the dialogues were factually incorrect.

In a tweet on Monday, Soundararajan said like the freedom to express views, one has the freedom to rebut wrong views.

Raja, who raked up the actor’s Christian origin by his tweet “Joseph Vijay’s hatred for Modi is ‘Mersal'” on October 21, continued that on Monday.

He uploaded the actor’s voter identity card and a letter written by the actor to a magazine on his letter pad.

“Truth is bitter,” tweeted Raja on Monday uploading the two documents to underscore Vijay’s religion.

Vijay, who had met Narendra Modi during electioneering ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, had even lauded demonetisation last year.

Well done: Rajinikanth to ‘Mersal’ team

0

Megastar Rajinikanth, who has been hinting at a political debut, has extended support to the team of controversial movie “Mersal” for addressing an “important topic”.

“Mersal”, Tamil actor Vijay’s Diwali release, is amidst controversy after the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded removal of specific dialogues which take a dig at the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and digital India.

“Important topic addressed… Well done!!! Congratulations team ‘Mersal’,” Rajinikanth tweeted late Sunday.

Politicians, including Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and DMK leader M.K. Stalin, apart from actor Kamal Haasan have slammed the BJP’s attempt to muzzle criticism regarding its policies.

Earlier this week, BJP National Secretary H. Raja even raked up actor Vijay’s Christian origins.

“Joseph Vijay’s hatred for Modi is ‘Mersal’,” he wrote, adding a communal flavour to the row.

Directed by Atlee, “Mersal” stars Vijay in the roles of a village head, a doctor and a magician. It is doing brisk business at the box office.

Overseas B.O report : Mersal excels, RTG disappoints

Mersal Overseas, Raja The Great Overseas

Tamil biggie Mersal starring, Vijay in the lead role, registered solid figures in the just concluded weekend at the overseas box office. The film, directed by Atlee, took a sensational opening in overseas with a $400K haul from its Tuesday premiers and went on to pile up solid figures in the first weekend. After collecting $155K and $96K on Wednesday and Thursday respectively, Mersal notched up a stunning $ 207K and $306K on Friday and Saturday respectively to take the total past the prestigious $ 1M mark. On Sunday, Mersal poised  to collect $150K extending its total beyond $1.3M in North America.

Telugu film Raja The Great, starring Ravi Teja, has thoroughly disappointed the trade circles with its poor run in the first weekend. The film started off well at the overseas box office with a promising $133K from its Tuesday premiers. The film managed to collect $43K and $20K on Wednesday and Thursday. However, the had film failed to collect promising figures towards the weekend with a disappointing $40K and $ 54K on Friday and Saturday respectively.

On Sunday, too, it had a poor run with $30K and the total stands just above $310K, which means the buyers are likely to incur approximately 55 percent loss on their investment.

The lacklustre script and the forced comedy didn’t go well with the NRI audience and resulted in a poor run for Raja The Great. Ravi Teja commands a decent market in USA. His previous films Kick-2, Power and Balupu collected $345K, $380K and $450K despite being poor to average films, that too way back in 2-3 years old market conditions. Given the background, one could estimate how badly Raja The Great performed in USA.

Counter criticism with logical response: Kamal Haasan on ‘Mersal’

0

Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan has come out in support of actor Vijays film “Mersal”, which has come under attack from BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu over references to the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Haasan said those opposed to the film must “counter criticism with a logical response”.

“‘Mersal’ was certified. Don’t re-censor it. Counter criticism with logical response. Don’t silence critics. India will shine when it speaks,” Haasan tweeted on Friday.

Vijay has been panned for his dialogues in the film that takes a dig at GST and digital India. The actor, who had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during electioneering ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, had even lauded demonetisation last year.

Earlier, BJP’s National Secretary H. Raja on Twitter raked up Vijay’s Christian origins.

“Joseph Vijay’s hatred for Modi is ‘Mersal’,” Raja posted on Friday.

Referring to the actor’s dialogue in the movie, Raja tweeted that in the last 20 years, 17,500 churches, 9,700 mosques and 370 temples were built. Out of these what should be avoided to build hospitals, Raja posted.

Raja even said “Mersal” shows Vijay’s ignorance in economic matters as the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is not a new tax and the tax on liquor is over 58 per cent.

Besides him, Tamil Nadu BJP President Tamilisai Soundararajan demanded removal of the dialogues relating to GST, digital payments and temples from the movie as they spread a wrong message.

She also wondered whether Vijay had asked his fans to distribute milk to poor children instead of pouring it on his cutouts erected outside the theatres.

Rahul slams Modi over ‘interference’ in ‘Mersal’

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the BJP’s demand for removal of dialogues critical of the GST in Tamil movie “Mersal”, asking him not to “demon-etise Tamil pride” by such interference.

“Mr. Modi, Cinema is a deep expression of Tamil culture and language. Don’t try to demon-etise Tamil pride by interfering in Mersal,” Gandhi said in a tweet.

Gandhi’s attack came after Tamil actor Vijay’s Diwali release “Mersal” came under attack from BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu, one of whom also sought to give a communal twist by raking up the actor’s religion.

The actor has been panned for his dialogues in the film that takes a dig at GST and Digital India. Vijay, who had met Narendra Modi during electioneering ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, had even lauded demonetisation last year.

Tamil Nadu BJP President Tamilisai Soundararajan demanded removal of the dialogues relating to GST, digital payments and temples from the movie as they spread a wrong message.

Earlier on Saturday, senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram also attacked the BJP over its demand for removal of dialogues critical of GST in “Mersal”.

“Notice to film makers: Law is coming, you can only make documentaries praising government’s policies,” Chidambaram tweeted.
