KCR meets Tamilsai Soundarajan on Covid-19 situation in Telangana

0

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao met Governor Tamilsai Soundarajan at Raj Bhavan on Monday to apprise her about the Covid-19 situation in the state.

The Telangana CM has discussed the measures the government has been taking to contain the spread of the virus, testing and treatment being given to the Covid-19 patients in various government hospitals in the state. The CM’s meeting with Governor Tamisai Soundarajan, a gynecologist, comes in the wake of her displeasure over the state government’s response to the pandemic. This is the first time that the Chief Minister has met the Governor after resuming his duties from Pragathi Bhavan nearly two weeks after he moved to his farm house in Gajwel. The CM had moved to his farm house after at least 30 employees contracted the infection.

On several occasions, the Governor was openly critical of the government’s handling of Covid-19 situation in the state, patients being overcharged by private hospitals and lack of equipment in government hospitals. She criticised the government for not testing enough and advised the government to ramp up the testing in the state.

The Governor had visited the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), where several doctors have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, to show solidarity with the medical professionals. She took to her Twitter handle to directly reach out to people.

Last month, she called Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar and Special Chief Secretary (Health) Shanti Kumari to Raj Bhavan for a discussion on the pandemic situation in Telangana. The Governor’s public criticism over the state’s response to the pandemic did not go down too well with the Chief Minister. The Governor was former BJP national secretary and president of Tamil Nadu BJP unit.

The KCR government had come under sharp criticism from the Opposition parties. While opposition parties have accused the state government of not doing enough to contain the virus, the Telangana High Court has also made some observations on the government’s performance. With the swell of new coronavirus cases continuing in Telangana amid growing criticism over low testing, the High Court had pulled up the state government directing it to submit a detailed report on medical equipment provided to the frontline warriors. The court also asked the KCR government to increase corona testing by using Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) in view of rise in Covid-19 cases in the state.

Telangana Guv interacts with pvt hospitals over Covid situation

0

At a time when Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao is coming under mounting criticism from the opposition for his alleged failure to check the spread of coronavirus in the state, Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan is asserting herself by calling meetings over the situation.

In a move that is likely to irk the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government, the Governor on Tuesday interacted with the managements of private hospitals treating Covid patients amid increasing public complaints about lack of beds and excessive billing by them.

Soundararajan had tweeted on Monday that she will be interacting with private hospitals regarding Covid management and public grievances about beds, billings, testing etc.

According to a tweet from Soundararajan’s handle, she interacted with various hospitals include Care Hospitals, AKIMS Hospital, Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital, Sunshine Hospitals, Kamineni Academy of Medical Science, Virinchi Hospitals, Global Hospital, Apollo Hospitals, Malla Reddy Narayana Hospital, Yashoda Hospitals and Continental Hospitals.

She had also tweeted on Monday that she called the Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary, Health to discuss the Covid situation prevailing across the state.

However, it is learnt that both the officials conveyed that they will not be able to visit Raj Bhavan due to their prior engagements.

“I am continuously on this job at various levels in the last 3 months,” Soundararajan tweeted in response to a citizen hailing her initiative. She wrote that she gave suggestions to the government, visited Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), discussed with Health University’s Vice Chancellor, member of Telangana State COVID team and superintendents of Covid care government hospitals.

“True” was her reply to a comment by someone that the first citizen of Telangana has taken Covid seriously.

She replied “noted” to various suggestions including the suggestion to re-impose lockdown in Hyderabad in view of the big spike in Covid cases in the state capital.

On Sunday, she voiced concern over the growing number of Covid cases in the state. “Follow 5Ts… Trace Track Test Treat &Teach ……… Revised strategy need of the hour… Focus on preventing fatalities among high risk & vulnerable populations of elders, diabetics, BP, heart, kidney, obese young & cancer,” tweeted Soundararajan, herself a physician.

Some of the Governor’s recent moves and her statements on the handling of the situation and testing have not gone down well with the TRS government.

Some ruling party leaders have taken exception to the Governor holding meetings on subjects like education and health without informing officials.

During a meeting with health experts, she had expressed views on a number of issues including testing. The TRS feels that her remarks are providing ammunition to the opposition to target the government.

Meanwhile, state Congress chief Uttam Kumar Reddy slammed Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar for ignoring the call by the Governor.

He said that the Chief Secretary violated the Constitution by not attending the meeting convened by the Governor and demanded action against him.

The Governor, who had often expressed her displeasure over the low testing in the state, on Monday tweeted “Called chief secretary and principal secretary health Telangana State to discuss the Covid situation prevailing across the state.”

The Governor is likely to disucss the measures initiated by the government and availability of the personal protection equipment, N95 masks, clinical management and other infrastructural issues. More importantly, the Governor is likely to ask the government on the number of tests being conducted and the facilities in Gandhi Hospital, Fever Hospital, King Koti Hospital and Chest Hospital.

Telangana governor worried over surge in Covid cases

1

Telangana Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan on Monday said that she is worried about the surge in coronavirus positive cases in Telangana in spite of the efforts to contain its spread.

“Single day’s largest jump of 199 cases, 2 PG medicos & other front line warriors including police, warrants united aggressive fight against Corona. Stepping up Covid fight is needed,” the governor tweeted.

She, however, added that there is no need to panic over the single day surge. “But it is a warning to be cautious & careful. Relaxation in lockdown restrictions doesn’t mean relaxation of safety precautions & practices learned recently. Luckily we are moving towards unlock 1 and not lockdown 5,” she wrote.

The governor’s tweet came a day after Telangana recorded highest single day jump in Covid-19 cases. A total of 199 people tested positive for the virus during 24 hours, ending 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The highest single day surge pushed the state’s tally to 2,698. Five more people died of Covid-19 during the same period, taking the death toll to 82.

The governor in her tweet also referred to the news of two post-graduate doctors from gynecology and dermatology departments at Osmania Medical College (OMC) and General Hospital testing positive on Sunday. The gynecology PG medico was reportedly infected while discharging duties at Government Maternity Hospital in Petlaburj while dermatology PG medico was the primary contact of the former.

With this the number of PG medicos tested positive at OMC has gone up to four. On Saturday, two medicos including the one discharging duties at Government Maternity Hospital in Petlaburj had tested positive.

“Following these cases, we have asked the doctors to be careful during physical interaction with women. We are ensuring strict adherence to safety measures and taking all steps to break the transmission chain,” said Government Maternity Hospital Superintendent Dr Naga Mani.

A traffic police constable in Hyderabad was also tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday. With this the number of policemen who tested positive so far rose to 29. One of them succumbed to the infection on May 21.

COVID-19: Telangana Governor touts camphor as remedy but not all convinced

1

Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan has suggested camphor as a remedy for coronavirus but her suggestion drew criticism from many on Twitter, who questioned the scientific basis of her advice.

Some Twitterati commented that she as a doctor should not propagate such ideas as people may start consuming camphor.

“I will be posting current research work in labs abroad on camphor to target viruses and its reference. We may reinvent its use in COVID-19 after further research studies in future,” the Governor tweeted on Saturday.

She had earlier tweeted to suggest use of camphor to treat coronavirus. “Look at new drugs to target SARS nCoV-2 and COVID-19. Compound identified is camphor! In traditional ayurveda medicines, it has been used as a remedy. Camphor was used to fight plague and influenza epidemics. Pray with camphor or make Chakkarai Pongal with Pacchai Karpooram,” wrote the leader from Tamil Nadu.

“Noted. Thanks. Scientific evidence documented very recently. I am confident of what I tweeted,” she tweeted again after a netizen advised her to make sure her idea was correct for COVID-19 situation and cautioned that she may face a lot of criticism in future.

While some hailed her idea and referred to medicinal property of camphor, there were others who voiced concern that people may believe it and start consuming camphor.

Then she posted another tweet: “Word of caution… these are in experimental studies in labs not to be taken for oral consumption directly till approved by authorities. Proud to find camphor used in our traditional medicine getting reinvented for so- called no-cure pandemic threats… wait for clinical use…

“Let us pray with camphor and sweet Pongal with Pachai karpooram. Nothing more than that… at present, please.”

“Madam, I am a resident of Hyderabad. While I appreciate your intention, kindly do give a disclaimer that this hasn’t gone through the rigour of clinical trials. Calling it a good practice is still ‘ok’ but your message may make people feel that it’s the medicine, which’s not true,” tweeted one Sathya Raghu.

“Ma’am… camphor is neurotoxic and causes seizures and encephalopathy,” commented one Dr Ramesh.

Governor Tamilisai showers praises on KCR in her maiden address in Assembly

0

Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan in her maiden address to the joint session of the Telangana Legislature on Friday showered praises on Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. She listed out the achievements of TRS government ever since it assumed office in the new state of Telangana in June 2014.

She said, “The greatest advantage for Telangana State is that the leader who led the separate statehood movement himself became the Chief Minister of the newly formed State and leading it from the front and getting marched towards the path of progress and development. The Telangana Society, which was destroyed in all the sectors during the united Andhra Pradesh rule, now under the visionary and dynamic leadership of Chief Minister Sri Kalvakuntla Chandrasekhar Rao has been moving forward with perfect planning, sincerity and commitment, ever since he took over the reigns of State six years ago. I have no doubt that this forward movement is yielding good results now.

The governor added, “After continuous and relentless struggle for six decades, the Telangana society could able to achieve a separate Statehood. The Telangana state achieved wonderful progress in several sectors and became number one State in the Country within a short span of time. This is something, I am sure we all should rejoice and feel proud of.”

She went on to say, “If we make a comparison of the situation that existed when the Telangana State was formed and now, the delightful achievements and success, the state achieved in such a short span of time is being observed with admiration by the entire country.”

She said Telangana faced crisis in each and every sector in Undivided Andhra Pradesh.

“Under these trials and tribulations, on 2nd June, 2014, the Telangana State started its journey, under the foresighted leader, who successfully spearheaded the separate statehood movement. Under the stewardship of Chief Minister Sri K. Chandrasekhar Rao, my Government after taking into consideration, its resources, facilities, needs, advantages, disadvantages, strengths and weaknesses, had prepared short-term, medium-term and long-term plans for the overall development of the State and thus launched State’s revitalization and rejuvenation process,” the governor remarked.

Finally, KCR to meet Governor Tamilisai!

0

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao will finally meet Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan at Raj Bhavan today.

KCR, who used to visit Raj Bhavan almost every week when ESL Narasimhan was Governor, has been avoiding Raj Bhavan, ever since Tamilisai took over as Governor on September 9.

KCR visited Raj Bhavan only on September 9, when Tamilisai took oath as Governor.

It’s been more than two months and two weeks since KCR last visited Raj Bhavan.

This triggered reports that KCR is not happy with Tamilisai, who sees her as a BJP leader but not Governor.

KCR reportedly felt upset at Governor giving appointments to Opposition leaders almost every day to meet her and lodge complaints against him.

With this, KCR has been staying away from Raj Bhavan.

However, KCR has decided to meet Governor today around 3 pm.

KCR wants to brief Governor about the TSRTC strike, the proposed new Revenue Act to be brought by TRS government and upcoming winter session of Legislative Assembly.
