Official visits Hyderabad crematoriums amid complaints of overcharging

0

A top Telangana government official on Monday made a surprise visit to crematoriums in Hyderabad amid public complaints that caretakers are charging hefty amounts for the last rites.

Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Arvind Kumar visited the crematoriums located in Punjagutta, Bansilalpet and Jubilee Hills to check whether extra money was being charged from people.

To make sure people were not forced to shell out extra money to perform the last rites of their departed, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has started displaying the charges at crematoriums last week.

The rate for conducting the last rites on a funeral pyre using wood is Rs 8,000 and the charge for electric cremation is Rs 4,000.

Arvind Kumar also looked into the amenities at the crematoriums and checked the electric cremation facility in Punjagutta as well. He was accompanied by GHMC Khairatabad zonal Commissioner P. Pravinya and other civic officials.

The inspection came amid reports that caretakers of crematoriums in the city were charging anywhere between Rs 25,000 to Rs 70,000 for the last rites as the number of cremations has increased in view of deaths due to Covid-19.

The caretakers are reportedly collecting the charges in cash and not issuing any receipts. Though the rules say that those who die at government hospitals should be cremated free of cost, their families are being make to shell out money.

In view of the complaints of overcharging, the GHMC, apart from fixing the prices for cremations, has also set up help desks at the crematoriums and put up banners on the charges to be collected.

It said that if any citizen finds that crematoriums are collecting more than prescribed charges, they can call on 040-21111111.

Covaxin trials on children likely from next month

0

Bharat Biotech may commence paediatric trials of its Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin from June, a senior company official said.

The vaccine maker has already received permission to carry out trials on children aged 2-18 years.

Bharat Biotech’s Business Development & International Advocacy Head, Dr Raches Ella, exuded confidence that vaccine for kids may get the license in the third quarter of this year.

Holding a virtual conversation with members of FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) Hyderabad on “All About Vaccines, he said that the company expected approval from the World Health Organisation (WHO) for Covaxin by the end of third or fourth quarter.

Ella also said Bharat Biotech will be ramping up manufacturing capacity of Covaxin to 700 million doses by the end of this year.

“We are happy to have the full support of the government because of which we are able to stand where we are today in this journey. The vaccine is co-developed by us and ICMR. The Government placed an advanced purchase order of Rs 1,500 crore. This will help us to increase our risk appetite. That is why we are expanding to Bangalore and Gujarat,” he said.

Also seeking to dispel various myths about vaccines, he said that they are safe and everyone should take vaccines.

Replying to a query by Consultant, Breast Oncology & Oncoplastic Surgeon, Dr Pragnya Chigurupati, who moderated the talk, Ella said the success probability of a vaccine is just 6 per cent from discovery to development.

“”In normal circumstances, the development of a vaccine takes anywhere between 7 to 10 years, which we have done in the least possible time. This was never taught in books. This is something I learned practically. The journey was challenging, promising, and fulfilling,” he said.

Asked about dosing intervals he said ideally the gap should be between two weeks and can go up to six weeks. “If for some reason you miss that schedule, you need not get panicked. You can go and take the second dose anytime possible but at the earliest possible time.”

Three months after the second dose, a good antibody response can be developed. Talking about a booster dosage he said the current vaccines are doing good enough but it will depend on future variants of the virus if any booster doses needs to be taken or not.

About herd immunity, he said if the majority of the population are inoculated, that is when herd immunity can be achieved. About cross-matching of different vaccines he said: “As of now, no mix and match. The studies are on, if proved well, then we can take a call in the future”.

Stressing that no vaccines offer 100 per cent protection, he said that the vaccine efficacy can be improved up to 100 per cent protection by Covid appropriate behaviour and following other safety protocols.

Asked why people still get Corona even after taking the first dose, he replied that the first dose gives only partial efficacy. “That is because your immune system takes time to develop. It is a biological process and the system needs some time. The severity of the Covid effect will be a lot less after the second dose,” he said.

On distribution, he said right now they are allowed to sell vaccines to the Union government, the state governments, and private hospitals in the ratio of 70:20:10. If any corporates plan to inoculate their staff, they may collaborate with private hospitals, he said.

FLO Hyderabad Chairperson, Uma Chigurupati described Covid-19 as a global health crisis. She pointed out that India is the worst hit and has surpassed Brazil.

Andhra wants ICMR team to test Ayurvedic Covid cure

0

It ended as a no-show for thousands of people who turned up at Krishnapatnam in Nellore district, as District Collector V.N. Chakradhar Babu made it clear that distribution of Ayurvedic cure for Covid would be allowed to resume only after competent medical authorities certify it.

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government has decided to rope in Central agencies to evaluate the Ayurvedic remedy for Covid that a local practitioner has claimed to have developed.

At a Covid review meeting on Friday, Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy directed the officials to get the remedy tested by Central government agencies, in order to decide on its safety and suitability for curing Covid patients.

The Chief Minister said that a team from the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) should be sent to Krishnapatnam to conduct an in-depth study of the medicine developed by Ayurveda practitioner Anandiah.

Following an announcement by the YSRCP MLA from Sarvepalli, Kakani Govardhan Reddy, that the Ayurvedic cure for Covid would be distributed from Friday morning, thousands of Covid patients and non-positive persons flocked to Krishnapatnam.

But while some medicines did get distributed initially, the police later stepped in and stopped the process.

The medication, which has been prepared by local Ayurveda practitioner Anandiah, has been attracting people from the surrounding areas over the last few days. However, its distribution was halted after the Lok Ayukta stepped in following reports that Covid norms were being violated.

Anandiah had become a local sensation after people in search of a cure for Covid began landing in droves at his doorsteps, after visuals of his treatment went viral on social media platforms.

Anandiah is giving the medicine free of cost to whoever approaches him. The medicine, in the form of balls or liquid drops, contains natural antioxidants and components such as pepper, ginger, neem, turmeric, and tinospora codifolio, commonly known as giloy.

Apart from Covid positive people, even others who are waiting in vain for vaccines that are in short supply, are turning to Anandiah for Ayurvedic cure, even as there is no scientific evidence that Ayurveda can cure coronavirus.

Taking note of the development, the district administration had formed a committee consisting of officials and AYUSH doctors to evaluate the efficacy of the concoction.

Nellore Collector K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu had said that the committee did not come across any adverse affects in people who took the medicine.

While some samples have been sent for testing to a laboratory in Hyderabad, the results are still awaited.

The Chief Minister, who was appraised of the matter, discussed it in Friday’s Covid review meeting, and decided to get the medicine evaluated by Central medical authorities.

Lakshmi Manchu helping kids who have lost parents to Covid

1

Actress Lakshmi Manchu is doing her bit to help children who have lost their parents to Covid.

Her NGO Teach for Change will be extending support to 1,000 kids who have lost their parents to the virus. Their team is already on the ground, identifying such kids. They will be helping them with education, basic necessities and also help build a foundation for themselves.

“On a personal front, I have been helping as many people as I can, trying to find medications or hospital beds and vice versa. The effect of Covid is more devastating post getting Covid even for the families and children who lost parents during this time,” she says.

She adds: “We, at Teach for Change, are committed to taking care of 1,000 kids from lower-income households — of their education, tuition, clothes and whatever it is they need help with.”

Recently, the actress also stepped up to help the community of Hyderabad by donating 1,000 cooked meals in hospitals.

“The initiative started with the lockdown where most people around the hospitals have been coming in from smaller towns and have no access to food. So, we chose a few hospitals that we would distribute 1000 meals during the entire lockdown. Our team at Teach for Change, our volunteers, our team members have been doing this every single day and are so grateful to be able to feed people and take hunger away from them,” she says.

Telangana Police told to enforce lockdown more strictly

1

Telangana’s Director General of Police M. Mahender Reddy on Wednesday directed police officials to enforce the state-wide lockdown more strictly.

His direction came a day after the state government decided to extend the lockdown till May 30.

The police chief held a videoconference with zonal Inspectors General of Police, Deputy Inspectors General of police, Police commissioners and Superintendents of Police on enforcement of the lockdown.

Additional DGP, Law and Order, Jitender and IG, Intelligence, Prabhakar Rao also participated.

The DGP told the officials that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is holding a daily review of lockdown enforcement in every district.

He said the current lockdown should be implemented strictly so that it need not have to be extended beyond May 30.

He noted that though lockdown relaxation is from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., people are coming out to buy essentials only after 8 a.m. and this is leading to crowding in markets and at shops. He called for creating awareness among people to buy the essentials and attend other works from 6 a.m.

The state police chief also noted that streets are looking crowded after 10 a.m. He wanted the Police commissioners, SPs, DCPs, DSPs and ACP level officials to be in the field from 9.45 a.m. to monitor the situation.

He said since overcrowding in fish and vegetable markets could lead to Covid spread, the police officials should take steps to decentralise the markets in coordination with officials from marketing, municipal administration and other concerned departments.

The DGP told the officials that if vehicles which have no permission are seen on roads after 10 a.m., they should be immediately seized. He said the police should not only focus on main roads but should also strictly enforce lockdown in colonies and on interior roads.

Mahender Reddy said at 10 a.m. the patrolling vehicles should move around with sirens blaring to begin lockdown enforcement. He claimed that police were receiving cooperation of general public in lockdown enforcement and that there were no complaints against the police.

Meanwhile, the state government on Wednesday issued an order, permitting petrol bunks to remain open during the lockdown. However, the DGP asked the officials to ensure that only those vehicles exempted from lockdown, ambulances and oxygen carrying vehicles are allowed.

The state government had imposed partial lockdown from May 5 to May 18. Later, it was extended till May-end.

1

The Telangana government on Wednesday floated a global e-tender for procurement of 10 million doses of vaccine for Covid over a period of six months.

The Telangana State Medical Services & Infrastructure Development Corporation (TSMSIDC) has invited online short term global e-tenders from licensed manufacturers for supply of Covid vaccine.

The tender can be downloaded from 6.30 p.m. on May 21 and the last date/time of online submission of the tender document is June 4, up to 6 p.m.

The tender will be governed as per the guidelines of the Indian government, the TSMSIDC said.

Interested eligible bidders may obtain further information from the TSMSIDC and download the bidding documents from the official website http://tsmsidc.telangana.gov.in/

Detailed Bid documents may be downloaded free of cost from Telangana state Public Procurement portal (https://tender.telangana.gov.in) prior to the deadline for submission of bids.

A pre-bid meeting to hammer out details like scope of the procurement and explaining details of the bidding documents to interested pharma companies with the state health authorities and the TSMSIDC has been scheduled on May 26 through a virtual meet.

To participate in the e-Bid submission for TSMSIDC, it is mandatory for the bidders to get their firms registered with e-Procurement Portal https://tender.telangana.gov.in, using a valid Class III Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) and valid email address.

The bidders will be responsible for ensuring that any addenda available on the website is also downloaded and incorporated. It is construed that the bidder has read all the terms and conditions before submitting their offer. The validity of the contract between the TSMSIDC and the vaccine suppliers is one year.

The state Cabinet on May 11 had decided to float global tenders for procurement of Covid vaccines.

The state government has already announced free vaccination for the entire population. However, vaccination of targetted groups has been marred by inadequate supplies from the Centre.

The state is yet to launch vaccination for 18-44 age group while many beneficiaries in above 45 age group have not received their second dose.

According to officials, the state has so far received 57,30,220 doses of vaccine from the Centre.

The state has a population of nearly 4 crore, including people from different states who have come to work in various sectors. Vaccinating the entire population is expected to cost Rs 2,500 crore.

State minister K.T. Rama Rao said last week that the state can vaccinate the entire population in 45 days if the Centre provides the required number of doses.

Ambati call for ban on doctors exploiting Corona

1

YSRCP firebrand MLA Ambati Rambabu has unleashed a raging attack on the doctors for the unchecked exploitation of the Covid patients in the Telugu States. It was so horrifying that some hospitals were coercing and extorting Rs. 15 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh without giving formal bills.

Mr. Rambabu gave a call to ban such doctors from the society altogether as they were a burden on the nation. The licences of such hospitals should be cancelled forthwith. Strong action should be taken against the labs which were collecting huge amounts from the patients.

The YCP MLA’s comments came amidst the growing reports on the flagrant harassment of the Covid patients by the hospitals in both the States. The High Courts were expressing their anger over the exploitation but the hospitals were not relenting.

The Central Government has also passed specific guidelines that only severe cases of patients should be admitted at the hospitals for Corona treatment. The mild and moderate cases should be treated in home isolation alone. However, there was no mechanism to strongly implement this.

Govt biased, turning temples as Covid Centres: TDP

0

Is the Jaganmohan Reddy Government playing with the sentiments of the Hindus by continuing its partial treatment to the temples, archakas and devotees? In view of the scarcity of infrastructure, the Government has started turning the temples into Covid centres in different parts of the State. The Opposition parties have now put strong objection to this, saying that this would only amount to hurting the sentiments of the devotees.

It would be better if the YSRCP regime used the spare infrastructure available in schools, colleges and marriage halls for the Covid treatment purpose. The TDP says in the temples, there would be no toilet facilities usually. Hence, it would not be possible to provide the required facilities to the Covid patients. It was unfortunate that the present rulers targetted the temples instead of using schools and function halls that would have all the necessary facilities.

TDP leader Buchi Ram Prasad said that the TDP would welcome any step being taken by the Government to fight against the epidemic but the question was why only temples were being turned into Covid centres. This kind of a partiality against Hinduism would not be correct. Has this Chief Minister held a review meeting even once to find out and resolve the problems of the archakas in the temples? What did this CM do for the well being of the archakas in the past two years?

The TDP leader asked the Government to explain what steps they had taken to save archakas’ lives during the Covid infections. Since the YCP came to power, there were over 180 attacks on the Hindu temples all over Andhra Pradesh. The YCP Government miserably failed to take any single step. Now, the Government was daring to turn the temples into the Covid centres without thinking about the sentiments of the devotees. There would be no doubt soon the Government may even ask the archakas to do duties at the Covid centres. In the past, it did not hesitate to force the teachers to do duties at the Government liquor shops where huge crowds caused rapid spread of the virus.

It is expected that the DRDO’s drug will contribute for the faster recovery of the patients and reduce their need for supplemental oxygen dependence,” she added.

Lockdown resulting in decline of Covid cases, says Telangana ministers

0

Implementation of lockdown and co-ordination among various departments is leading to gradual decline in the new Covid-19 positive cases in Telangana, two state ministers said on Monday.

Animal Husbandary minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav and Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali reviewed the Covid situation in Greater Hyderabad with the Mayor, District Collector and officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

They observed that with the implementation of lockdown, proper functioning of government hospitals and Basthi Dawakhanas, door to door fever survey and special sanitation drive, the number of positive cases have declined.

The state government on May 12 imposed a lockdown after the high court directed it to take strict measures to check the spread of Covid.

The government had earlier ruled out imposing lockdown, maintaining that the move will not help in bringing down the number of Covid cases.

The state, which has been witnessing a downward trend in new cases, reported 3,816 cases on Sunday, as against 4,801 cases on May 11.

Regarding the second dose of Covid vaccine, Yadav said vaccine doses have not received from the Central government for last three days and the programme has been temporarily stopped. He said that vaccination will resume as and when the state receives vaccines.

He said a separate Covid control room has been opened in the GHMC with No 040-21111111.

At the meeting, it was also decided that with the monsoon expected next month, desilting of nalas should be taken up vigorously. The Entomology and Enforcement, Vigilance & Disaster Management wings of the GHMC are spraying disinfectant chemicals to control spread of Covid-19.

Noting that many NGOs are providing food to the needy during lockdown relaxation, the minister said they should take prior permission from the local police.

Mahmood Ali said the steps being taken by the Telangana government are a model for the other states in the country. In order to provide food facility to the poor and needy, the quantity of food served at thee Annapurna canteens has been increased.

Mayor Gadwal Vijayalaxmi said in order to contain the pandemic, strict implementation of lockdown is needed. She said isolation centres were identified in each circle for use in case of emergency and to improve sanitation efficiency, she would inspect the works regularly.

The suspension comes at a time when the state has been focusing on second dose for people above 45 years for over two weeks.

The state has stopped administering of first dose for beneficiaries and has also not taken up vaccination for those above 18 years of age due to lack of sufficient supplies from the Centre.

Pawan advises Govt to focus on Covid, not arrests

Jana Senani Pawan Kalyan has strongly criticised the YCP Government for its lopsided, unhealthy priorities. He said the Coronavirus was raging in the State. Even for medicines, the patients had to run around over 10 shops but were not able to find them. Remdesivir injections were going to black market. No beds and oxygen supply in the hospitals.

Senani asked how the Jagan Reddy regime could shift its focus to arrests when the Covid situation was alarming and even reaching catastrophic proportions. How can this Government target its political rivals instead of coming to the rescue of the suffering public?

Pawan Kalyan asked whether it was same for the YCP to arrest its own MP just because he was criticising its Government’s decisions and actions. This was not a time for making arrests. The Government should take others along with it in order to extend all possible help to the people in this grave crisis.

On the other hand, Raghurama Raju’s lawyers moved house motion in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. The court ordered the CID to extend medical care. The hearing is likely to come up in the afternoon today.

2 covid patients die as Telangana Police turn back Andhra ambulances

1

In a tragic turn of events, two patients from Andhra Pradesh died in the ambulance vehicles they were traveling in, as Telangana Police did not permit vehicles without valid online permits to cross the interstate border at Kurnool. The development took place at the Panchalingala checkpost on National Highway 44, on Friday.

The two persons who died on Friday, were identified as natives of Nandyal and Kurnool respectively.

At least 40 ambulances from Andhra Pradesh were forced to return back from the Pullur toll plaza since Thursday when they tried to cross the state border on the way to Hyderabad. A similar situation played out at the Ramapuram cross border post near Suryapet.

While Telangana police officials said that ambulances not carrying the required online permits, were barred from entering, kin of some the patients said that even those with permits issued by the Andhra Pradesh police were forcibly turned back.

With covid cases on the rise in Andhra Pradesh, many critically ill patients are being taken to Hyderabad, which in turn is putting pressure on bed availability and medical care in the state capital.

Telangana Police have been directed to allow entry into the state, only for patients who have the requisite e-permit, and confirmation from the hospital.

Since Sunday, the interstate border crossings at Pullur near Kurnool, and Ramapuram cross at Suryapet, havr been witnessing poignant scenes of patients’ kin pleading with Telangana police to allow their vehicles entry.

The developments at the border have elicited sharp reactions from public and politicians in Andhra Pradesh.
