TFI talk with Goodachari composer Sri Charan pakala

It has been a while we had a special importance for background scores in Telugu Cinema and one particular spy thriller film Goodachari has been making waves on the same scenario. This brought a special limelight for the young and talented composer Sri Charan Pakala who has given some scintillating music for this flick. In fact, this composer has been making unique albums and music since his stint into films. The first spark from this composer came with Kshanam which also had Adivi Sesh in the lead role. Now, this refreshing duo made a fantastic presence once again with Goodachari. Telugu360 exclusively speaks to the composer on not just Cinema but also many other aspects of his life:

Hello Sri Charan.. congratulations on the success of your new film Goodachari!

Hi..thanks a lot. It has been overwhelming for me to see such response for the background score in particular.

Compared to other films in Telugu off late, the background score for Goodachari has a special element. It blended effortlessly with the storyline and became a character.

How did you get such effect with music?

Well, music has the inherent power to either elevate or underplay a scene. A powerful background score will not only add to the film but also gets noticed. Goodachari is one such example where every audience could feel the effect. I only strive to get such musical effect for every film of mine. Goodachari has such amazing storyline which is not just about thrill and action but great family drama. I just did my best for the film and glad it worked.

Where do you think Telugu Film Industry needs to gear up on?

I seriously feel Telugu Film Industry has always been experimental when it comes to music. The audience love good music and appreciate when a phenomenal work is done. There are ample examples of this sort but the mindset of music getting appreciated only with the hero should change. Music should be seen as an independent entity instead of linking it with the film’s commercial success or failure.

The Goodachari Theme music in particular has been talk of the town off late. Is there any interesting story behind it?

When Adivi Sesh narrated me the storyline, I was determined not to give a theme music which would remind the listener of James Bond , Bourne Series or allied films. I just picked up my guitar and started playing a random riff- which was used as it is for the film. The motif of the entire film began in my trance mode and instead of keeping it too complicated by adding layers, we wanted it to be as raw and pristine as possible. I am so glad my instincts worked quite well and appealingly!

The entire sequence of pre-interval bang in Goodachari had a great emotion through music. What was the effort put behind it?

The pre-interval sequence has got lot of potential and I was dead sure that if the music falters down in between, the effect will go haywire. At the same time , neither me nor Adivi Sesh were willing to put something routine with heavy strings and routine usage of violins. Hence, I wanted to take the music till a crescendo and then drop at once. I got so glad that even Akkineni Nagarjuna spoke about it recently and appreciated the idea!

What is your general approach while working on background scores or songs?

My approach is quite on the go and never on paper. I am a self trained musician and have been much into international music and a huge metal music fan. That helped me to become an instinctive composer rather than following a rulebook based approach. I personally enjoy bringing up a unique sound in my compositions which has less influence of other composers.

But every composer will have some inspiration of great works…

Yes, I agree. But my point is, inspiration is different from influence and direct lifting of an already composed song. Though I hear lot of international composers such as James Horner, Thomas Newman, Hans Zimmer and gain inspiration from them, I really respect and admire Mani Sharma garu for bringing such a different edge in composing for commercial movies as well.

How was your experience working with Adivi Sesh once again?

Me and Sesh come up a long way in professional journey. When I gave music for his short film KISS, it was widely appreciated. He is one of those young film personalities who would want to innovate everytime and give the audience a new experience. The best thing about him is- he always gives a free hand to me in composing and it brings the best output.

The background score effect in Goodachari especially for locations like Bangladesh was quite unique. What was the thought behind it?

The regular style of Arabic music was intentionally refrained by us. We didn’t want to give it the obvious mystical feeling immidiately. Instead, we planned to build up on the mild and dark tones- if you observe, the bgm there did have a very faint Arabic flavour!

Speaking off the recording studio, what are your other interests?

I have been working on a lot of independent music by collaborating with new artists online. I also own a band named Penatonic which has been actively performing in the Telugu states. We do every genre ranging from Rock bands like Led Zeppelin to Telugu folk songs! Now, it is so wonderful to open our every show with Goodachari theme music. The feeling of being in a band and making music is always fantastic to have,

    Upcoming projects?

I am currently working on Idham Jagath and the re-recording is going on. This film has some interesting family entertainment topped with action. It is always a pleasure working for a Sumanth film!

Okay.. thank you and wishing you the best for your upcoming projects!

    Thanks a lot!

    Nag compares Godachari with Shiva

    0

Adivi Sesh’s latest offering Goodachari is running with packed houses and has already attained hit status at box office. Buoyed by the response, the makers of this spy thriller held a success meet in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Akkineni Nagarjuna attended the event as chief guest. Speaking at the event, Nag said Goodachari will inspire many people like how Shiva did after its release in 1989. He congratulated the whole team for delivering a quality output with minimum resources.

Nag is very impressed with Goodachari and he himself asked the makers whether he could something for the film. Nag’s appreciation has left the team thrilled. Producer Anil Sunkara who released the film said Nag’s comparison of Goodachari with his career defining hit is the biggest compliment.

Weekend Box-Office : Goodachari Grows Well, Chi La Sow Decent On Sunday

    0

Goodachari : After a decent opening the film has shown good growth on Saturday and Excellent on Sunday with collections in the range of 190 percent of Friday. The film has collected an estimated distributor share of 3.10 Crores in Domestic Markets with nearly 40 percent coming from Nizam alone. Individual distributor recovery ranges from 50 to 70 percent. If the film sustains very well on weekdays, Some distributors will be in safe zone by the end of this week.

Chi La Sow : After a Poor opening the film has shown limited growth on Saturday and decent on Sunday with collections double of Friday. It has collected an estimated share of 1.10 Cr in Domestic markets with distributors recovery in the range of 30 to 35 percent. Now the film has to sustain well on weekdays to achieve a respectable verdict.

Saakshyam : The film has a very average weekend with housefull shows reported in some centres on Sunday. In D centres, the Collections were better than the weekend topper Goodachari. But the real the problem with the film is that it had a very poor week which sealed the fate of the film already. It has added an estimated share of 80 lakhs over the weekend taking domestic total to 10.65 Cr. DISASTER !

Brand Babu : The film has a Disastrous weekend with an estimated distributor share of 40 lakhs in Domestic markets. It will be washout on weekdays. DISASTER !

RX 100 : The film is collecting minimal shares feeding some theatres. Cummulative share has breached 11.50 Crores in Domestic markets. BLOCKBUSTER !

US box office : Godachari shines, others disappoint

Tollywood’s latest thriller Goodachari, which has Adivi Sesh in the lead role, has dominated the overseas box office after its release last Friday. Chi La Sow, which took a decent start, couldn’t sustain in the first weekend. Maruthi’s Brand Babu is a complete wash out with embarrassing figures.

Goodachari, which opened on a positive note with encouraging talk from Thursday premiers, went on to add solid numbers on the next three days to collect close to $ 400K by the end of Sunday. Considering the budget spent by the makers, the film has already attained hit status and all buyers will be in safe zone by the end of Monday.

The strong content coupled with riveting narration and commendable performances by the entire cast have resulted in generating a solid talk for the film.

Rahul Ravindran’s Chi La Sow managed to collect only a meagre $ 114K by the end of Sunday. The film might not recover the investment and will end as a loss venture in overseas.

Opinion – Three cheers to Team Goodachari

    0

When thrillers like Goodachari are made in Telugu, there is always a fear mind that it might end up being amateurish. Apart from the tight script, making a spy thriller includes colossal budgets with fancy locations and some realistic properties on board.

Director Sashi Kumar is worthy of praise for handling a heavy script as such in a flawless manner and owning a quality product like this within a restricted budget needs a lot of courage.

After an exhilarating script like Kshanam, Adivi Sesh has not missed on the essence of thrill and his quest for the elements of suspense remains. However, if we ignore the hero’s nonintellectual approach, the unpredictable story line has helped the film do wonders. Adivi Sesh should definitely keep writing more!

The lead pair Adivi Sesh and Shobitha are certainly the perfect fit to their roles and so is the rest of the cast. A few observations on this movie are:

    The Casting:

Filmmakers have made it a trend to choose their cast members from industries around for roles of native significance whereas Goodachari’s entire cast belongs to Tollywood. Be it for roles of National or an International identity , the faces belong to Tollywood. Debutante and our very own Telugu girl Shobitha Dhulipalla has nailed her character with absolute ease and perfection. She has a long way to go!

The rest don’t seem to be a miss match either and have done their bit amazingly well.

    The Lesson:

Survival is the need for anyone in the industry. And for an actor like Sesh with a decent appearance and no background, it takes huge amounts of luck to get to this. It is surprising in the way how Sesh put luck aside and actually took it up giving his best till date.

This really heavy script is entirely written by him and watching Goodachari means watching Sesh for long.
A true inspiration for the non-backgrounders to write with confidence and end up big.

    The Problem:

Your Friday project decides the fortune of your next Friday’s Product, says the Film Fraternity. And abiding by it, this could have been a much better and promising project if only Adivi Sesh’s blockbuster Kshanam’s script was taken into consideration by the actual or any producers and had he been given more budget and space for writing. Putting the native understanding and budgets in mind, somewhere Sesh’s writing and Sashi’s directorial looks compromised.

Giving in to the positive and amazing reviews about Goodachari, you’d be shocked at the number of screens running the movie currently. Where some films with emptiness echoing the theatres have large screens to display, sadly.

Good cinema needs good space and good support.

OS market gets a breather after a long gap

After a strong Summer with more than $ 10M haul, Tollywood trade circles in overseas have been witnessing a lean phase due to back to back debacles. Sammohanam is the only recent Telugu film which managed to collect more than half a million.

After weeks of disappointment due to a string of low performing films, trade circles have heaved a sigh of relief with the release of Goodachari and Chi La Sow. Both these last Friday releases have managed to garner decent word of mouth and encouraging reviews.

While Goodachari is having a strong run, Chi La Sow is performing decently in the first weekend at the US box office. Both films started off well with decent premiers day numbers. Goodachari collected close to $290K as of this writing.

Godachari and Chi La Sow bring cheer for trade circles

    0

After successive weeks of dullness at box office due to a string of poor performing films, finally a cheerful Friday has arrived for trade circles as new releases opened to good reports all over. Out of the three films that released this week, two have managed to garner positive talk all over since morning shows.

Adivi Sesh’s slick thriller Godachari, which has been creating good buzz since the release of interesting trailers, is leading the pack with phenomenal reports from audience and critics alike. The spy thriller has opened well and is going to have a strong weekend due to the positive web reviews and encouraging mouth talk.

Rahul Ravindran’s family entertainer Chi La Sow is also getting decent reports from all quarters. Trade analysts opine that the film might easily draw family audience due its neat presentation.

It is a good start for both films and they to need to perform strongly in the first weekend to sustain at the box office.
