8 months before Andhra MLC polls, YSRCP declares candidates

0

In an unprecedented move, Andhra Pradesh’s ruling party YSRCP announced candidates for three seats of Legislative Council, eight months before the elections.

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) late Monday night announced the candidates for three seats which will fall vacant in March next year.

Chief Minister and YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy finalised the names of candidates to contest for the MLC seats from graduate constituencies.

He took the decision at a meeting with party MLAs, MLCs and other leaders here on Monday.

S. Sudhakar, Chairman, Brahmin Corporation, will contest from the Srikakulam-Vizianagaram- Visakhapatnam constituency.

Syam Prasad Reddy of Gudur will be the YSRCP candidate from Prakasam-Nellore-Chittoor constituency while V. Ravindra Reddy will contest from Kurnool-Kadapa-Anantapur constituency. Ravindra Reddy is son of the sitting MLC from the same constituency.

Graduate voters in the constituencies, each comprising three erstwhile districts, will cast their votes in the elections likely to be held in February-March next year.

Political parties usually support independent candidates for the MLC elections from graduates and teachers constituencies. However, Jagan Mohan Reddy discussed with the party leaders the proposal for YSRCP fielding its candidates. He not only gave his nod for the same but also declared the candidates.

For any election, the parties announce their candidates at the last minute but Jagan Reddy surprised everyone by finalising the candidates eight months before the polls. Party leaders said they would give ample time for the party candidates to campaign by interacting with the graduate voters in their respective constituencies.

The meeting also decided to contest the Anantapur-Kadapa-Kurnool teachers’ constituency. However, the candidate for the same will be decided later.

MLC polls : Is TRS victory in 6 seats unanimous or forceful?

1

The ruling TRS in Telangana has won 6 MLC seats unanimously so far in the MLC elections being held for 12 MLC seats under local bodies quota.

The polling is scheduled to be held on December 10.

But the TRS has already bagged six MLC seats unanimously.

Three TRS candidates, Kalvakuntla Kavitha, Patnam Mahender Reddy and Shambipur Raju elected unanimously on Wednesday.

Three more TRS candidates Pochampally Srinivas Reddy, K.Narayan Reddy and K.Damodar Reddy were elected unanimously on Thursday.

All the six candidates were elected unanimously after independent candidates have withdrawn their nominations.

Congress is contesting for only two seats and BJP none.

But TRS is facing independents in all the 12 seats.

The TRS ministers and MLAs are reportedly bringing pressure on independents to withdraw their nominations to make TRS candidates election unanimous.

They are reportedly offering a decent ‘cash gift’ in lakhs of rupees to withdraw their nominations.

Those who are refusing to withdraw nominations are being threatened of police cases.

Police cases are being lodged against independent candidates of forging signatures of elected representatives of local bodies on their nomination forms.

Fearing police cases and harassment by TRS leaders, the independents are accepting cash offers made by TRS leaders and withdrawing nominations.

The last date to withdraw nominations ends on November 26 and TRS leaders are trying to make a few more seats unanimous in favour of TRS.

MLC elections in Telangana: The asking rate is Rs 5 lakh per vote!!

0

The local body constituency MLC election is promising to be an edge-of-thriller with senior TRS leader and former Karimnagar Mayor Sardar Ravinder Singh rebelling against the leadership. Soon after filing his nomination, he went underground and announced that he would come over ground only after the deadline for withdrawal of nomination ends.

This has rattled the TRS leadership, which was hoping that the local body MLC elections would be a smooth affair. Sardar Ravinder Singh, who felt marginalised in the party, has rebelled and is in no mood to listen to the leadership. With this, the stakes have gone high in Karimnagar Local Bodies MLC Constituency. The ruling TRS and rebel Ravinder Singh are determined to fight it out till the last.

There are 1326 votes in the MLC constituency. Of this the TRS has 996 votes. The Congress, BJP and independents account for 330 votes. The winner needs 664 votes. On paper, the TRS looks quite comfortably placed. But, since the voting is based on a secret ballot, the fear of cross-voting is lurking for the TRS. It is worried that if 330 of its voters resort to cross-voting, the official candidate would end up losing the election. Ravindra Singh has considerable support in the party. So, the TRS is really worried.

Meanwhile, there are reports that the voters are being offered as high as Rs 5 lakh per vote. At this rate, a candidate may have to spend roughly RS 30 crore to bribe the voters if he is determined to win the election. There is discontent against sitting MLC Bhanu Prasada Rao. This too is working against the TRS. Sources say that the MLC battle in Karimnagar has turned out to be quite prestigious.

Kavitha elected unanimously in MLC polls!

0

Kalvakuntla Kavitha, the daughter of TRS chief and Telangana Chief Minister K.Chandrashekar Rao was elected unanimously to Legislative
Council under local bodies quota.

Kavitha filed her nomination only yesterday (Tuesday).

Apart from Kavitha, only one independent candidate Srinivas filed nomination. The Congress and BJP have not fielded their candidates.

During scrutiny of applications on Wednesday (today), the election officials rejected the nomination of independent candidate Srinivas
following complaints that he forged the signatures of an MPTC and a corporator on his nomination form.

Candidates need to submit approval of ten elected representatives of local bodies while filing nomination.

An MPTC and a corporator complained to election officials against Srinivas stating that he forged their signatures and filed
nominations.

With this, his nomination was rejected making the election of Kavitha as MLC unanimous.

Kavitha contested Nizamabad MLC seat in October 2020. At that time, BJP and Congress had fielded their candidates but Kavitha won with a
big majority.

But since it was a bypoll, her term as MLC was set to end in January 2022. The election commission issued notification for conducting MLC
election for Nizamabad recently. The polling was supposed to be held on December 10 but no polling will be held for Nizamabad seat now.

Who is behind “Independents” in Telangana MLC polls?

0

The upcoming MLC elections on December 10 for 12 seats under local bodies quota in Telangana have put the ruling TRS in a fix.

The last date to file nominations ended on Tuesday (today).

As many as 96 candidates filed nominations on the last day. Of this, only 12 are TRS candidates and 2 are Congress candidates. The BJP did
not field a single candidate.

But 82 candidates filed nominations as ‘Independents” raising speculations about who is behind such a huge number of independent
candidates.

TRS suspects BJP’s role in fielding so many independent candidates to damage the prospects of TRS.

TRS suspects that BJP which did not field a single candidate is fighting elections against TRS indirectly by fielding independent
candidates.

The BJP doesn’t have required majority in local bodies to fight these elections directly.

But it is reportedly aiding independent candidates to defeat TRS.

The BJP wants to deliver another blow to TRS in MLC polls through indepedent candidates.

The BJP’s graph in Telangana is rising after it defeated TRS in recent Huzurabad Assembly bypoll and it wants to maintain this tempo even in MLC polls via independents.

KCR blocks MLC polls, what about Huzurabad?

TRS chief and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao always love to face elections.

This is his strategy since he launched TRS in 2001. He always used to resign along with his party MLAs, MPs during Telangana statehood agitation days and force bypolls frequently and win them to prove his strength. He strengthened TRS in Telangana with this strategy.

Even after formation of Telangana state and KCR becoming CM in 2014, he is not giving up this strategy.

He dissolved Telangana Legislative Assembly in September 2018, nine months before its term ends in June 2019 and forced advanced Assembly polls in December 2018 and won with a huge majority.

KCR forced another bypoll in Telangana by sacking Etela Rajender from his cabinet in May this year forcing Etela to quit Huzurabad MLA seat in June.

But for the first time, KCR seems to be afraid of facing elections. This became evident after Election Commission of India sought Telangana state government’s view on holding MLC elections for six seats under MLA’s quota.

The EC has written a letter to TS government on July 28 seeking its opinion on holding MLC polls.

The TS government responded today (Saturday) saying the time is not appropriate to hold MLC polls now due to Covid conditions in state.

Only 119 MLAs vote in this election and of this 111 MLAs belong to TRS and its friendly party AIMIM. Even this voting will be not be held as opposition parties have no required MLAs even to contest elections. All these six MLC seats will be bagged by TRS without election unanimously. Despite this, KCR expressed unwillingness to hold MLC polls.

This shows that KCR wants Huzurabad bypoll also to be delayed further. Political circles say had KCR said yes to MLC polls, the EC would have given approval even to hold Huzurabad bypoll now and with this fear KCR blocked MLC polls.

Political circles say KCR wants Huzurabad bypoll to be delayed till he implements Dalit Bandhu scheme perfectly and launch many other development programmes to lure voters in Huzurabad to defeat Etela.
