Flash! Minister Sujana Chowdary meets Modi!

0

Central Minister Sujana Chowdary met with PM Modi just a while ago in New Delhi. This meeting did gain importance given the current tiff situation between the BJP led-Centre and TDP at the state. The meeting went on for nearly 20 minutes.

Post the meeting, Sujana Chowdary spoke to AP CM Chandrababu discussing the outcome of his meeting with Modi. Close sources to the TDP have confirmed that PM Modi responded positively to the proposals of CBN, carried by Sujana Chowdary.

According to sources, answering to Sujana Chowdary’s concerns, Modi briefed saying that, ‘the question of special status is not only limited to Andhra Pradesh. It also involves others states in the country. The Centre is looking AP from a different purview. We are trying to pool in funds from various other resources for the development of Andhra Pradesh.

Moreover, for the completion of Polavaram project, we are allocating the funds through NABARD. Similarly, for the capital construction, the Centre is ready to allocate funds whenever required. There is absolutely no need to be worried.’

It is also heard that Modi reassured Sujana Chowdary regarding the Centre’s commitment towards the development of Andhra Pradesh.
Meanwhile, YSRCP leaders are desperately trying to reach Modi, seeking his appointment.

CBN asks if ‘ CM Modi’ ever used PM Manmohan’s photo for Central schemes ?

0

“Did Narendra Modi as Gujarat Chief Minister give credit to the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Advertisements?” asked Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday. BJP leaders of AP critiqued TDP government for failing to put Modi’s picture on the posters of the programs being done by with the side of Central government. Naidu deplored the comments of the BJP leaders and noted that for his stature he need not do such things. “Even if the leaders of the state complain to the national leaders, the central government should understand the sincerity in such things”. He asked, “For how many central government programs did Modi print Singh’s picture?” Naidu noted that such comments are meaningless and should be condemned and reverted strongly.

Meanwhile, he told Eenadu that it is responsibility of central government to protect the weaker child. Comparing Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to Siamese twins, Naidu said, “When Siamese twins are separated by a surgery, it is the responsibility of Centre to keep the weaker twin in incubator and protect it. Till the malnourished twin becomes strong, it is the responsibility of those who separated the twin tokeep giving nutritious diet”.

Somu Veerraju and co sidelined : Does it indicate BJP strategy?

0

The post of BJP Party President in Andhra Pradesh has been contested by several BJP leaders and BJP high-command refused to make changes in last several months. Many analysts closely monitored how BJP high command responding on this and with whom it will fill this post. Because, by seeing the candidate occupying this post, one can have a fair guess of the game BJP wants to play.

In the wake of recent sharp comments between some BJP leaders and TDP leaders, once again surfaced the topic of TDP-BJP alliance breaking up before 2019 elections. Moreover, the leaders like Somu Veerraju, Purandhareshwari are among the front liners who are attacking Chandra Babu and TDP government. So, any attempt by BJP to give the post of AP president to such leaders, will have definitely given boost to some of the AP BJP leaders who want to break up with TDP.

But Narendra Modi and Amit Shah duo decided to continue Kambhampati Hari Babu as AP BJP president. He is currently serving MP from Visakhapatnam and people say he is disciple of Venkayya Naidu and he is soft towards TDP. So, Modi-Shah duo, by preferring continuation of Hari Babu, gave enough hints about their plans for 2019 elections. It seems, Jagan’ s open offer to BJP didn’t have much effect on them. Had one among those BJP leaders who follow anti-TDP stand – like Somu Veerraju, Purandhareswari, Kanna, or some other such leader – been selected to this top post, definitely, that would have stirred lot of debate by now and those who were waiting for TDP-BJP alliance to break up would have been on cloud nine. But, at least for now, Modi-Shah duo brought disappointment for them.

AP CM plays hardball with Modi

0

The recent meeting of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi has more to it than meets the eye. The meeting comes after a gap of one year and as expected, the CM had given the Prime Minister a long list of demands totalling Rs 16,447 crores. He also poured out AP’s financial problems, budget deficit, Centre’s aid commitment made during the passage of AP State Reorganization Bill (bifurcation) and how the BJP government has reneged on special status to AP in his 19-page memorandum submitted to Modi. After one hour of talks, Chandrababu returned only with ‘assurances.’

The positive thing, however, is Modi was able to spare an hour for AP Chief Minister who is hoping for adequate funds for the state’s development in the next month’s Union Budget. TDP members of Parliament had already met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to impress upon him the need for funds and CM’s meeting with Modi was a follow-up and to keep himself in the good books of PM.

It’s playing a diplomatic game with finesse, unlike some other chief ministers, political analysts say. With 2019 parliament and Assembly elections looming large, BJP and TDP need each other. ‘Do they’ is another observation, of course. Though they are allies, their differences are well known and there is strong public resentment against the saffron party’s leaders for their step-motherly attitude towards AP. And, BJP has no grassroots level support in the Andhra region. People’s unhappiness with the Centre is also being exploited by the main opposition YSR Congress Party. In a way, that’s a blessing in disguise for TDP as it reflects the overall public sentiment.

To say BJP doesn’t have any hope of getting a sizable number of seats in AP in 2019 is an understatement. Even if the talk of BJP-YSRCP joining hands comes true, the former will be the loser in an alliance. But BJP needs Lok Sabha seats that have to be won either on its own or in tie-up with TDP or YSRCP. For Amit Shah and company, striking a deal with the incumbent chief minister is easier than negotiating terms with an untested aspiring chief minister.

When we look at this future political scenario, it is obvious that Chandrababu seems to have played his cards cautiously well during his Delhi meeting. Surely, the subtle message Chandrababu is capable of delivering with an uncanny smile, wouldn’t have lost on Modi. Now, the ball is in PM’s court.

‘Strained’ ties between Chandrababu, Modi marked AP politics in 2017

On and off squabbling between allies Telugu Desam Party and BJP was one of the notable political features in Andhra Pradesh in 2017.

The TDP is part of the NDA government at the Centre while the BJP is a coalition partner in the state but theirs had been a love-hate relationship.

While state BJP leaders had been open in their attack of the TDP, the latter could only vent its “frustration” in private, careful not to antagonise the former’s national leadership.

Whenever some of his party leaders tried to hit back at the BJP, TDP supremo and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu only chided them, asking them not to speak anything against their “friend”.

As political observers see, the TDP needs the BJP more than the other way round and Chandrababu obviously finds himself in a “disadvantageous” position when it comes to getting things done by the Centre.

“He used to literally dictate terms when the TDP supported the NDA government between 1999 and 2004 but not now. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi emerging stronger, Chandrababu finds himself even more in a helpless position,” political analyst NR Krishna points out.

Privately, even senior leaders of the TDP agree that the relationship between Chandrababu and Modi is “strained”. Despite repeated requests at regular intervals, the prime minister did not grant an appointment to Chandrababu for a one-on-one meeting to discuss state issues in the last few months.

“This is a clear indicator of how things are. From our side we are very clear but we don’t know what their plans are,” a senior minister observed.

Things may not be well at the central level but politically the TDP seems to be growing stronger in Andhra Pradesh with the “there is no alternative” factor being played up by the ruling party.

The principal opposition YSR Congress looked unmatched in political strategy in taking on the TDP though its leader YS Jaganmohan Reddy launched a 3,000-km paada yatra (foot march) in November to garner people’s support to fulfill his ambition of becoming the chief minister.

But the TDP drilled more holes into the YSRC, whose more than 10 MLAs switched ranks this year, taking the grand total to 23 in the last two years (one of whom died this March).

Four of the 22 YSRC MLAs (they are officially still listed so) were inducted into the Chandrababu Cabinet in April. The state Cabinet now comprises members of TDP, BJP and YSRC.

Incidentally, the chief minister’s son Nara Lokesh too was made a minister after he was elected to the Legislative Council in March.

Chandrababu’s critics and the Opposition termed 2017 as a year of hype.

At the Partnership Summit in February memoranda of understanding were signed for 591 projects with a total (planned) investment of Rs 7,67,273 crore that were supposed to create 15,08,916 jobs.

Only 50 out of 591 projects actually went into production (as per the Chief Minister Office Realtime Executive Dashboard), and 61 percent of the proposed ventures did not move beyond the ‘preliminary stage’.

“Chandrababu releases a helium-filled balloon advertising that investments are pouring in by the billions, only to hoodwink people. His numerous foreign trips have only ended up with big zero in new investment (into the state),” claimed former Speaker Nadendla Manohar, who is from the Congress.

“Be it the London Eye or the bullet train… Chandrababu promised to get everything on the planet to Amaravati. He even said Amaravati would host the 2018 Olympics. Such is the hype he creates and it’s a habit with him,” Public Accounts Committee Chairman Buggana Rajendranath Reddy observed.

“He first promised to make Amaravati a Singapore, then Astana, New York and what not. The amount of hype is evident in this and he has a favourably-inclined media that propagates it,” he added.

Film star Pawan Kalyan, who runs the Jana Sena Party, promised to devote full time to politics from October but, busy as he is with the shooting of his latest movie, toured the state only for four days early December.

Kalyan announced he would contest the 2019 elections and also field his party candidates in a few constituencies but still remained vague on whether he would take the fight alone.

In 2014, the Jana Sena did not contest the polls but supported the TDP-BJP combine, contributing largely to its victory. Kalyan is still building his party set up and may come out with clear political plans in 2018, preparing adequately for the 2019 battle.

Not inviting Kejriwal to metro line inauguration insult to public: AAP

0

Delhi’s ruling AAP on Monday criticised the DMRC for “insulting” the city’s people by not inviting Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to the inauguration of Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line, saying this was done to stop him from making a demand to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reduce fares.

“Not inviting Delhi Chief Minister in the inauguration of Delhi Metro is the insult of citizens of Delhi. The only reason of not sending invitation to Kejriwal was to stop him of making demand from PM to reduce recently hiked Delhi Metro fare,” Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia tweeted.

The senior Aam Aadmi Party leader also said those who “hiked Delhi Metro fares fear Kejriwal”.

Sisodia’s remarks came after the inauguration function of the 12.64 km long Botanical Garden-Janakpuri West section of Magenta Line in which the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) invited the Prime Minister and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minster Yogi Adityanath but ignored Kejriwal.

The stretch, which will ferry approximately 3.6 lakh commuters every day and help connect Uttar Pradesh’s Noida with Faridabad in Haryana through the Violet Line (Escorts Mujesar-Kashmere Gate), was inaugurated by the Prime Minister around 5 p.m. on Monday.

AAP leader Dilip Kumar Pandey also slammed the DMRC, saying “seven of nine stations of Magenta Line falls in Delhi and half of the money is paid by the Delhi government to the Delhi Metro, but the inauguration invitation was sent to PM, Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana”.

“The problem is with Delhi man (Arvind Kejriwal). Everything is accepted but don’t rob Delhi people. Take credit but reduce fare.”

Delhi Metro fares were hiked for the second time this year as proposed by the Fare Fixation Committee.

As per the new fare, commuters who paid Rs 15 for travelling 2-5 km are now paying Rs 20. And, the maximum fare has been increased to Rs 60 as compared to previous rate of Rs 50.

The hike was vociferously opposed by the Delhi government which accused the transporter of inefficiency and demanded that hike be withheld.

Modi congratulates Rahul on ‘election’ as Congress President

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated his political bete noire Rahul Gandhi on his election as the new Congress President and wished him a fruitful tenure.

“I congratulate Rahul Ji on his election as Congress President. My best wishes for a fruitful tenure,” Modi tweeted.

Modi has been regularly mocking Gandhi, calling his elevation to head the Congress party as dynastic politics and a redux of “Aurangzeb raj”.

Gandhi, 47, a three-time MP, is the sixth Nehru-Gandhi scion to head the grand old party after his great great grandfather Motilal Nehru, his great grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru, his grandmother Indira Gandhi and his father Rajiv Gandhi. He takes over from his mother Sonia Gandhi.

Modi during his Gujarat election campaigning has been taking frequent digs at Gandhi, comparing the family to Mughal kings.

“When Shahjahan came after Jahangir or Aurangzeb came after Shahjahan, were there any elections for that?” he said last week. “I congratulate the Congress on their ‘Aurangzeb Raj’,” he said, likening Gandhi to the unpopular Mughal ruler.

In 2016, an RTI filed by Tanwar had revealed that the Centre spent over Rs 1,100 crore between June 1, 2014 and August 31, 2016, on advertisements featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India can be anchor for US business in Indo-Pacific region: Juster

0

US Ambassador to India Kenneth Juster on Monday said India can be the anchor for US business and investment in the Indo-Pacific region.

His comments came on the eve of Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES), beginning here on Tuesday which will be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump’s daughter and advisor Ivanka Trump.

Stating that economic relationship is an important part of overall strategic partnership, he described GES as another significant symbol and tangible sign of very strong strategic partnership between the two countries.

“Economic relationship should be as strategic as security relationship. India should try to see itself over (a period of) time as the anchor for the US business and investment in Indo-Pacific region. That will only give greater value to our strategic relationship and make sure US presence in this region is a long-term one and we are here in full force,” the Ambassador told a news conference.

“This conference is important step in that process. Here we are here working together to promote innovation. We are two most innovative societies, two democracies and we share values,” he added.

Juster said while the event was organized to stimulate innovation and job creation, it may have a side benefit of additional investment and trade.

Describing GES as an extraordinary event in which 150 countries will be represented, he said the US and India were not only working together for their prosperity but also for countries around the world.

As the GES here will focus on women, he said this was critical as women represent significant part of population but also represent the business world. He underlined the need to help women entrepreneurs network with mentors, finance and market opportunities.

Ivanka, who is also a successful entrepreneur, will lead the US delegation, which will also include USAID administrator Mark Green and Overseas Private Investment Corporation President and CEO Ray W. Washburne. The US delegation is represented by 38 states, the highest-ever in GES.

Has Modi cut KCR to size?

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi knows how to cut people to size. He has been demonstrating this trait ever since he took over the country’s reins nearly three years ago. Earlier, it happened with stalwarts like LK Advani and it is happening with state chief ministers, particularly with the Telugu heads of governments K Chandrasekhar Rao and N Chandrababu Naidu.

At the moment, KCR is very much in the news as he is hosting the Global Entrepreneurship Summit from November 28 to 30 at which who is who of corporate world will be present. The cynosure of the event is, of course, Ivanka Trump, who is leading a planeload of American honchos at the summit.

In fact, so much is written about the 36-year-old daughter of US President Donald Trump that Hyderabadis are overfed with details of where she will stay, eat, shop and go sightseeing during her three-day visit to the City of Nawabs. Dry humour making rounds on Telugu social media about her is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on KCR government fawning over Ivanka.

Basking in such golden moments of Telangana, the Chief Minister apparently wanted to speak for 20 minutes at the GES summit. But, if reports are to be believed, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) cut it short to 3 minutes. That means he has to stick to welcome words, no speech about how he is shaping the youngest state as a land of milk and honey. On the other hand, Modi is expected to take about 20 minutes, nearly half the official GES opening time.

One wonders, is it deliberate or is it Modi way of telling KCR who calls the shots, although the event is jointly organised by American and Indian governments.

There is more to it than meets the eye. The Chief Minister’s recent pronouncements about increasing quota for minorities and his reported bid to campaign for it among other states to pressurise the Central government for a constitutional amendment to avoid legal challenges have not gone down too well with the BJP leadership. Nor KCR is too happy with the way the Centre is sitting on his proposals to increase the number of Assembly seats and districts. In other words, his driving point is states need more autonomy.

Though Modi is visiting Hyderabad for the GES summit and inaugurating the Metro on November 28, the itinerary follows to the last letter in the agenda. Except exchanging pleasantries, KCR, for that matter, AP Chief Minister who will be among the VIPs, he may not be able to talk anything else with PM.

Modi’s treatment of Chandrababu Naidu is no different. TDP-BJP relations have always been blow hot and cold. Their differences range from funds for Amaravati construction to allotment of projects, and, of course, special status for AP.

With Venkaiah Naidu, a staunch supporter of AP who stood by it through thick and thin, becoming Vice-President of India, Chandrababu has lost AP’s effective voice at the Centre.

Will Modi Change BJP’s Ideology For KCR?

0

A little while ago in the assembly, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao made a statement about Minority Welfare. Although the issue is currently under Center’s Purview, KCR expressed his confidence, in bringing reservations to Muslim Community, KCR expressed his confidence.

“We are relentlessly working for Reservations to Muslims. We will get them for sure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also favourable. If needed, TRS MPs will fight for that in the upcoming Parliament session,” KCR announced.

The reservations on the basis of religion is against the ideology of BJP. The state BJP had already stated the same and also opposed the proposal vehemently.

Well, keeping aside the party ideology, it has to be seen now if Modi is really favourable to Muslim Reservations to benefit KCR.

Modi seeks healthy media debate on democracy in political parties

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged the media to debate democracy and the democratic values of political parties for transparency in the evolution of their leadership and in their recruitment.

“You (the media) show us what we need to focus on. Democracy in political parties is something that the country is adapting to. We need to have transparency in the recruitment that political parties do. How the leadership of a political party evolves? What kind of opportunities are given to new generations. Do democratic values form the core of their values. It should become an issue of our debate and deeply so,” Modi said in his address to the media at the BJP’s annual Diwali Milan here.

At the event that was also attended by BJP President Amit Shah along and other senior party leaders, the Prime Minister highlighted media’s positive role in promoting democratic values in India.

“Democracy in political parties is a subject more people should know more about. It is true that the funding of political parties is a point of media discussion and many things come out in the open. But overall, how they are formed, how they function, how they recruit, their values, their ideologies and their weaknesses, what is the reason behind such weaknesses… all this should be debated,” he said, adding that political parties evolving “with a true democratic spirit is necessary for the country, necessary for a democracy”.

“I hope the people who are here will one day carry the debate forward.”

He paid his gratitude to to media for its “positive role” it played in making the Swachh Bharat Mission a success, despite criticizing the government over other issues.

“Half of the newspaper pages would be filled with the government’s criticism. But when it comes to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, all are on the same page. I thank each one of you for making it a personal mission.”

Analysis : Jamili Elections & Why it is projected as a panacea

0

Recently lot of debate is happening in media regarding this “Jamili elections”. Some viewers are actually confused about what is this “Jamili”. While the Indian word “jamili or Zamili” means paired or coupled, the word jamili elections refer to the concept of “One nation – One elections”. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, in 2016 had given the idea of holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, Assembly and local bodies. He said that frequent elections affect the functioning of bureaucracy.

Arguments in support of Jamili elections (One India, One elections)

1. Main arguement is that, frequent elections impose a heavy burden on the exechequer.Election Commission estimates that the Lok Sabha and state polls cost around Rs.4500 crore in 2004.

2. Another arguement supporting simultaneous elections is that, frequent elections impact governance and policymaking as the government is trapped in short-term thinking instead of working for long term vision. In fact elections in Tamil Nadu, in past, dictated central government’s foriegn policy with Sri Lanka.

3. One more arguement is frequent elections and associated “Model Code of Conduct” before elections, brings normal work of the government to a standstill. Once this “code” starts, it prevents government from announcing any new schemes, making any new appointments without the approval of election commission.

So, proponents of this Jamili elections, argue – it will save public money and help governments focus on long term vision and better governance.

WHY this is a “dangerous” game.

1. First of all, constitution never says, all the elections should be held at the same time. Let’s say even if Modi government coordinates with Election commission and all states to convene elections for all the states and also union simultaneously either in 2018 or 2019, what will they do if any state government doesn’t survive full 5 years. Let’s say Jamili elections happen in India in 2018. And, in one particular state, coalition government is formed as no party could get full majority. So if that state government falls, should we wait for 5 years to convene elections or should it be convened immediately. As per constitution, within 6 months elections or president rule( “Emergency provison” of constitution is popularly called president rule) has to be held. Recent verdicts of supreme court tell, president rule provision has to be used very sparingly. So this is clear violation of constitution. If coalition government fails to survive 6 months after elections, why should people wait for 4.5 years for next elections.

2. Secondly, this is against Federal spirit envisioned in the country’s constitution. How can a union government ask state governments to resign before completion of its 5 years. For e.g. Bihar, Tamil Nadu had elections in last couple of years only they have couple of more years to rule as mandated by people. Just to have “Jamili ” elections, how can Modi government ask these states to dissolve their governments.

3. More than all these, there is a conspiracy theory doing rounds among political circles. Even though debatable, BJP or NDA has some sort of positive mood across the country at the moment. So to encash that positive mood, Modi’ government is intentionally triggering this debate on “Jamili” elections. These analysts in fact challenge Modi government to talk of Jamili elections during 2024 elections. Because, obviously they think NDA can’t sustain the positive moment till 2024 because anti-incumbency will pile up by that time and if Jamili elections happen during 2024, Modi would be doing the greatest favor to Congress party.

4. Finally there is one more thing that political analysts and people fear about Jamili elections – i.e. accountability of the government. In a pluralistic country like India, if all the elections are over at one single point of time, governments tend to become autocratic. As no state elections, no local elections are there in near future, rulers of both state and central governments turn dictators, which is a threat to democracy.

Conclusion:
In a country where language changes for every 500 km, where culture of people changes every 100 km, pluralism and diversity are the lifelines. Ignoring this diversity and trying to bring everything under single umbrella would be a wrong decision and will definitely prove disaster.

Top BJP leader’s sensational comments on recession in India and on Modi government

0

BJP veteran Yashwant Sinha, a former finance minister, has made sensational comments in his article titled “I need to speak up now”. He says, the economy of the country is on a downward spiral. He says, “I shall be failing in my national duty if I did not speak up even now against the mess the finance minister has made of the economy. I am also convinced that what I am going to say reflects the sentiments of a large number of people in the BJP and elsewhere who are not speaking up out of fear”. His analysis led to a very wide debate among the economists, politicians and common public alike. Highlights of his detailed analysis are as below.

Recession: He remarked, ” Private investment has shrunk as never before in two decades, agriculture is in distress, construction industry, a big employer of the work force, is in the doldrums, the rest of the service sector is also in the slow lane.”

Demonetization: He also responded on demonetization. He told demonetization is not responsible for this deceleration as the deceleration had started much earlier. But demonetization only added fuel to fire.

GDP: He commented on GDP too. He told that the methodology for calculation of the GDP was changed by the present government in 2015 and according to the old method of calculation, the growth rate of 5.7 per cent is actually 3.7 per cent or less.

Mr Sinha predicts that a revival by the time of the next Lok Sabha election “appears highly unlikely” and “a hard landing is inevitable.”
