Sharmila finds fault with brother’s decision to rename NTR varsity

1

YSR Telangana Party leader Y.S. Sharmila has found fault with the decision of her brother and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy to rename the NTR University of Health Sciences after their late father, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR).

She feels that the move amounts to insulting crores of fans of the late TDP founder and former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao.

Sharmila said her father was a great and popular leader and he did not need change of some institution’s name which was already named after some other leader to elevate his status.

“Today this institution has been renamed after YSR. Tomorrow, another government may change the name. Will this not amount to insulting YSR?” she asked.

Sharmila, who is currently conducting padyatra in Vikarabad district, feels that YSR does not need somebody’s fame. “No one enjoys the status which YSR had. When he passed away, 700 people died of shock,” she said.

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly on September 21 passed a Bill to rename NTR University of Health Sciences as YSR University of Health Sciences.

Ignoring the objections and protests of the opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government went ahead with the legislation.

The Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2022, was passed unanimously in the absences of TDP members, who were earlier suspended from the House by Speaker Tammineni Seetharam for stalling the proceedings in protest against the state government’s move.

Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy defended the government’s move to rechristen the university.

He said YSR was not only a physician and politician but was also a great humanitarian who understood hardships of the poor and provided best healthcare facilities to them for free.

Set up in 1986, the Health University was named in 1998 after N.T. Rama Rao, who was popularly known as NTR.

With the passing of the Bill, the university has now been renamed after Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

The move triggered angry reaction from the TDP with the party president and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu vowing not to rest till the name of NTR is restored for the health university.

Reject NTR University Bill, TDP requests Governor

0

Former chief minister and TDP president, N Chandrababu Naidu, on Thursday stated that the bill to rename NTR Health University as YSR Health varsity has been introduced in the Assembly even without the knowledge of the Governor, who is the Chancellor of the varsity.

After calling on the Governor, Chandrababu Naidu told media persons at Raj Bhavan that the TDP has made an appeal to the Governor to reject the bill. Terming the legislation to rename the university as illegitimate, Naidu said that the bill is highly unethical and irrelevant and thus they made an appeal to the Governor, who is the Chancellor of the university to totally reject it.

What is the need for the Government to bring in the legislation in such a hurry, he asked and said that TDP founder and former chief minister, late NT Rama Rao created history in the State by establishing Health University in 1986 to bring all the medical colleges under a common umbrella. The university has been named after the late NTR as he brought in radical changes in medical education, Naidu observed.

In the past 24 years, several thousands of students obtained medical degrees from the affiliated colleges to this university, he said and pointed out that of the 32 medical colleges in the State 16 colleges, including 3 private and five government institutions, were established during the TDP regime. During the three-and-half-year YSRCP rule, permission has been granted only to three colleges and the construction of these colleges has not been completed yet.

Stating that he has never seen such a Chief Minister like Jagan Mohan Reddy, who always utters blatant lies, the TDP national president said that Jagan has taken even the Assembly for a ride. Though the TDP struggled a lot to get the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) , the Chief Minister did not bother to supply water to it, Naidu said.

Chandrababu briefed the Governor on the poor financial condition of the State and how cases are being booked against the leaders of the Opposition parties when they question the Government on public issues. He wanted the Governor to interfere in such issues as now Andhra Pradesh is witnessing state-sponsored terrorism. He also informed the Governor that already several complaints have been made on various issues.

Lokesh vows to restore NTR name for health university

0

Former minister and TDP general secretary Nara Lokesh on Wednesday criticised chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy for renaming the Dr NTR University of Health Sciences. He said that the TDP would restore the name once it came to power.

The TDP general secretary wondered what made Jagan Mohan Reddy to drop the name of late N T Rama Rao from the university. He said that the university was founded by NTR in 1986 and it was the first health university in the country.

He alleged that Jagan Mohan Reddy was doing psycho acts in the state as he could not develop the state. He asked the chief minister to develop the state adding infrastructure to all the sectors.

He took strong exception to Jagan Mohan Reddy claiming that he has respect for late NTR and wondered what made him remove the name of the leader whom he respected. He sought to advise the chief minister to create a new institution and name it after his father, if he had love for the institution and his father as well.

Lokesh demanded that the state government withdraw its decision and repeal the bill that was passed in the Assembly renaming the university.

Earlier in the day, the TDP MLAs and the MLCs had held protests both in the Assembly and Council opposing the renaming of the university and removal of the name of NTR. The TDP leaders also held a protest at the NTR University of Health Sciences in Vijayawada against the change of name.

Jagan justifies renaming Health University

1

Justifying the renaming of Health University, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said that it was a well thought move to give due credit to Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy and he has by no means disrespect towards NTR.

Intervening during the motion on passing the Bill to rename NTR Health University to Dr YSR Health University, the Chief Minister said due credit should be given to the deserving as Dr YSR, a practicing medical doctor before joining politics, has been a pioneer in taking quality medicare to the common people with his innovative Aarogyasri besides the 108, 104 ambulance services.

Of the existing 11 medical colleges in the state, nine were functioning even before TDP was formed and remaining have come into being with the initiative of Dr YSR. Our Government is adding 17 medical colleges to give a fillip to medicare. With this 20 of the 28 medical colleges in the State are due to the efforts of YSR and his son. This itself is a credit which qualifies the renaming of the Health University, he said.

Chandrababu Naidu has no love lost for NTR as he has usurped the Party and Chief Minister post from his father-in-law which led to mental agony of the founder of the Party. While he could recommend Central Awards to the people who said with him in backstabbing NTR, Chandrababu could not recommend NTR’s name for Bharat Ratna while we have kept our promise of naming one district after NTR, he said.

The present government has further strengthened medicare and has taken steps to equip all hospitals from village clinics to district hospitals with sufficient staff and medicines while increasing the number of procedures under Aarogyasri.

Earlier, the TDP MLAs held a protest in the Assembly demanding that the government withdraw the proposal to rename the NTR University of Health Sciences. They raised slogans against the government and the chief minister for the proposal.

After repeated requests, the speaker suspended the TDP MLAs from the House and continued debate on the bill.

The Bill was later passed by voice vote.
