Make-up artist from UAE wedding reveals Sridevi’s last moments

0

Subhash Shinde, who did Sridevi’s make-up at actor Mohit Marwahs marriage in Dubai last week, says the late actress had “so much warmth and positivity” and always treated everyone, including make-up artistes, present on a film’s set like a family.

Sridevi was 54 when she passed away in Dubai late on Saturday night.

“I still cannot believe she is no more. I was there in Dubai with her for her make-up at Mohit Marwah’s (her nephew) marriage. She was looking so pretty, happy and bright as ever. I came back two days ago, and on Saturday late night the news started coming in (about her death). I am still in shock,” Shinde told IANS.

“She was one of the icons with so much warmth and positivity. I started working with her after ‘English Vinglish’ released (2012). She always treated, all of us, whether make-up artistes, dress people, everyone… like a family. We were one unit.”

Shinde said she would ask him if he ate on time and how his family was doing.

Sridevi was also a painter.

“She had a great sense of colours and shades. There is an art of combining shades that complement the entire attire. She knew it right, I rather learnt it from her. She had a strong sense of aesthetics,” said Shinde.

Sharing another interesting thing about the star, he said: “…The colour, ornaments, even the size of her bindi, she had an eye for detailing.”

The make-up artiste worked with Sridevi in films “Puli” and “Mom”.

According to him, the actress was very cooperative and patient during her make-up sessions.

“I remember during ‘Puli’, she was supposed to wear heavy make-up. She never threw any tantrums, was always patient and cooperative with us even though the process would be time-consuming,” recalled Shinde.

“I won’t say she was a perfectionist, but the fact is that she exemplifies excellence; that comes with perfection. So yes, perfection is the word to define it.”

Sridevi has been pretty much a very unhappy woman: Ram Gopal Varma

0

Filmamker Ram Gopal Varma, who directed Sridevi in films like “Great Robbery”, “Govindhaa … Govindhaa…” and “Hairaan”, says that the late actress has been a “very unhappy woman” and her life was a “classic case of how each person’s actual life is completely different from how the world perceives it”.

Sridevi, 54, died on Saturday in a Dubai hotel bathroom. The autopsy report called it an “accidental drowning” in the bathtub.

In a personal note on her, Varma says that she was the most desirable woman and the biggest super star of the country but that’s’just a part of the story.

He wrote: “For many, Sridevi’s life was perfect. Beautiful face, great talent, seemingly stable family with two beautiful daughters. From outside everything looked so enviable and desirable… But was Sridevi a very happy person and did she lead a very happy life?”

Varma says that he was aware about her life from the time he first met her for his film “”Shana Kshanam.”

“I saw with my own eyes how her life was like a bird in the sky till her father’s death and then became like a bird in a cage due to her overprotective mother. In those days, actors used to be only paid in mostly black money and due to fear of tax raids her father used to trust friends and relatives who all betrayed her the moment the father died,” he wrote.

“Coupled with this the ignorant mother made many wrong investments in litigated properties and all those mistakes combined made her penny-less by the time Boney Kapoor came into her life. Boney himself was in huge debt,” he said.

Once the mother died, he added, her younger sister Shri Latha eloped and got married to their neighbours son.”

He said that before dying, the mother had put all properties in Sridevi’s name. “But her sister put a case on her demanding half the property claiming that her mother was insane and not in her senses when she signed the will due to the brain surgery…So in effect the woman desired by millions in the world was all alone in the world except for one Boney,” added Verma.

Verma said that except for a short glimmer of ‘English Vinglish’ (her comeback film), Sridevi had been pretty much very unhappy. “She went through so much in her life and due to her early career entry, life never gave her time to grow up at a normal pace,” he said.

“More than the external peace, her internal mental state was of a high degree of concern and this caused her to look at her own self. She was the most beautiful woman for so many people. But did she think she was beautiful?, the filmmaker asked rhetorically.

For the filmmaker, Sridevi “always came across as very shy, insecure and low on confidence.”

He said that she was “panicky about anybody knowing what her psychological insecurities were.” She was “very uptight, who built a psychological wall around her” as she was scared of anybody to really see what’s going on within her.

“Not because of her fault, but because she was thrust with fame from a very young age that never gave her a chance to be independant and be what she could really be and really wanted to be. She had to put on the make up and be somebody else not just infront of the camera, but also behind the camera,” he said.

Varma says that she was scared whether her daughters — elder one Janhvi who is set to make her Bollywood debut with “Dhadak” and younger one Khushi, would be accepted

“I could see in her eyes the pain she was going through deep inside her and that’s because she is actually a child trapped in a woman’s body…she is naive as a person, but suspicious because of her bitter experiences, which is not a very good combination…,” he said.

“Coming to her death, it is most likely a combination of heart stroke induced accidental drowning death in the tub. But medications might have played a huge role,” added Verma.

He also states that many suicides and accidental deaths happen after big parties or weddings.

“That’s because people with depression and insecurities can’t understand why the whole world is so happy and enjoying, but they are not able to feel the happiness inspite of all the glitter and spotlight. That reminds them that they are deeply sad and that there is nothing wrong with the world and the fault is with just them that they are not able to feel anything,” said the filmmaker.

“Some people who are very deeply depressed commit suicide. Others, just to control their depression and anxiety, take extra pills not knowing that it can be dangerous in certain doses and conditions,” he added

“Keeping the speculations on her death aside and coming back to the point of her life, I generally don’t say ‘Rest In Peace’ after people die, but in her case I want to really say it because I very strongly believe that she would finally and really rest in peace now for the first time in her life,
or shall I say death?”

In a shocking new twist to her sudden end, it has been revealed that Indian actress Sridevi died due to ‘accidental drowning’ in her hotel here before her surprise dinner date with husband and film producer Boney Kapoor. The revelation has led to delay in repatriation of her body back home in India.

A day after media reported that she had died following cardiac arrest on Saturday night, a Dubai Police forensic report stated that the 54-year-old had passed away due to accidental drowning in the bathtub in her hotel room here.

Dubai Police has transferred the case to Dubai Public Prosecution, which will carry out regular legal procedures followed in such cases.

Another twist came with the mention in the forensic report of traces of alcohol in her blood — with some media reports claiming that it was found to have been at “elevated levels”.

Sharing the image of the forensic report, Gulf News stated that Sridevi, who had traces of alcohol in her blood, lost balance and fell into the bathtub and drowned.

According to khaleejtimes.com, her body will soon be moved to the Al Muhaisana embalming unit and will be repatriated to Mumbai — where India’s top stars and her legions of fans are waiting to have a glimpse of the mortal remains of their “Chandni” star.

According to a post on the official Dubai Media Office Twitter handle, Dubai Police has transferred the case to Dubai Public Prosecution, which will carry out regular legal procedures that are followed in such cases.

“The investigation is still going on to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident as the forensic report only says that she drowned,” an official told Gulf News.

The police are trying to piece together the sequence of events and ascertain what exactly happened.

A chief prosecutor told Gulf News: “In such accidental death incidents, the results of the post-mortem and forensic examination reports are referred to the Public Prosecution as part of ordinary law enforcement procedures. The papers are revised by the prosecutors of the jurisdiction where the incident happened. An official order to hand over the body of the deceased to the family or relatives is issued shortly after that.”

Experts feel this could further delay the return of the body and that could reschedule her last rites.

Earlier reports said that the actress was getting ready for a dinner date with her husband.

Boney flew to Dubai from Mumbai and went to her room at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel at around 5.30 p.m. on Saturday to “surprise” her with the dinner, a source close to the family told the Khaleej Times.

He woke her up and the couple chatted for about 15 minutes before he invited her for dinner.

The “Mom” star then went to the washroom. After 15 minutes had passed and Sridevi did not come out, Boney knocked on the door to check on her. When he got no response, he forced open the door to find the legendary actor lying motionless in the bathtub full of water, the source said.

“He tried to revive her and when he could not, he called a friend of his. After that, he informed the police at 9 p.m.,” he added.

The police and paramedics rushed to the site, but she was pronounced dead.

Her body was taken to the General Department of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

Sridevi, Boney, and their younger daughter Khushi Kapoor were in Ras Al Khaimah, another part of UAE, last week to celebrate the wedding of her actor-nephew Mohit Marwah.

Boney had returned to Mumbai after the wedding, but decided to return to Dubai to “surprise” his wife.

I have a habit of constantly dreaming and waking up every once in a while in the night to check out my cell phone and I suddenly saw a message that Sridevi is no more ..I thought that either it’s a nightmare or a hoax and I went back to sleep ..An hour later I woke up to check and there were around 50 messages informing me of the same

Back in the times when I was in engineering college in Vijayawada, I happened to see her first telugu film “padaharella vayasu”.. I was awestruck with her Beauty and I walked out of the theatre in a daze thinking that she cannot be a real person and she has to be some fantasy form who somehow has taken a human shape. Then I saw her various other films, all of which constantly created a higher bench mark of both her talent and her beauty ..To me she looked like some being who has come from some other world in the outer space as a favour to bless us for a little while for all the good we might have done in this world .

She was like a creation of God which he does whenever he is in a very special mood as a very very special gift to mankind. My journey to Sridevi started when I was preparing for my debut film ‘Shiva’. I used to walk from Nagarjuna’s office in Chennai to a neighbouring street where Sridevi used to live and I used to just stand and watch Sridevi’s house from outside her gate.

I just couldn’t believe that the goddess of beauty lives in that stupid looking house. I say stupid because I believed that no man made house deserved to house that beauty called SRIDEVI. I used to so desperately hope to catch a glimpse of her as she went in or out of her house. But sadly no such thing ever happened.

And then after ‘Shiva’ released and became a big hit,a producer came to me and asked if I was interested in doing a film with Sridevi. I said “Are you mad or what? I will die to just see her, let alone make a film with her!”He arranged a meeting with her and took me to meet her at that very same house where I used to stand outside the gate and stare. At night we went and as luck would have it there was a power cut in her house. so I was sitting in her living room in candle light along with the producer waiting for the angel to appear and my heart was thumping like mad.

Her mother told us she was busy packing as she was about to catch a flight to go to Mumbai. As we were waiting, every once in a while Sridevi was rapidly crossing the living room as she was moving from one room to another room in a rush to finish her packing even as she apologetically smiled at me for the delay. Everytime she was appearing and disappearing in a flash and the director in me started slow motioning her and running her backward and forward for my visual pleasure.

Finally she came and sat in the living room, just said a mandatory few lines that she would very much like to work with me and then she left for Mumbai. I continued talking to her mother with enormous respect and awe because she actually gave birth to Sridevi. I went back to my place feeling like I was in the seventh heaven. The way Sridevi sat in front of me in the candle light got imprinted in my mind like an exquisite painting and with her image completely filling both my mind and my heart I started writing Kshana Kshanam.

I wrote Kshana Kshanam with the one and only purpose so as to impress Sridevi. Kshana Kshanam was intended by me as a love letter to her. Throughout the making of Kshana Kshanam,I just couldn’t take my eyes off her charm, her beauty, her personality and her demeanour was a new discovery for me.

She had an invisible wall around her and she does not let anyone cross that. Behind that wall she maintains her dignity and her self-respect and she never lets anyone inside. Also during the course of working with her and observing her technique of acting I began to understand more and more as a director about the nuances of performances and characterizations because for me she formed the epitome of cinematic acting

Her popularity and stardom had to be seen to be believed. We were shooting for the climax in Nandyal for Kshana Kshanam and the whole town of Nandyal came to a standstill when they came to know that Sridevi was in town. Banks, Govt offices, Schools, Colleges everything in town closed as everyone wanted to see Sridevi.

She stayed in a traveller’s bungalow in Nandyal and at a little distance i was staying in another bungalow. There used to be a crowd of atleast 20,000 people around her bungalow throughout the night just staring at it. There were about 50 tough guys along with a 100 strong police force who used to continuously guard her.

When we were at location we used to know that Sridevi started from her bungalow to come to location because we used to see a column of dust travelling towards us from the distance. The dust was due to the thousands of people running behind her car. I have never seen more of a super star and now she just got extinguished

Sridevi is the most beautiful and the most sensuous woman,God ever created and I think he creates such exquisite pieces of art like her only once in a thousand years. Though she is no longer there, we her directors fortunately have her captured as a goddess of beauty in our cameras and our cinematic angel has now just become a divine angel

I thank God for creating Sridevi and I thank Louis Lumiere for creating the movie camera for giving us an opportunity to contain her forever. I still can’t believe that she is no more and I am lying in bed writing about my memories of her

I so hope I am still having a bad dream, but I know I am not
I hate Sridevi.
I hate her for making me realise that she too is finally only just a human being.
I hate that her heart too has to beat to live.
I hate that, she too has a heart which can just stop like anybody else’s.
I hate that I lived to see the messages informing me of her death
I hate God for killing her
And I hate Sridevi for dying .
I love you Sri wherever you are… and I will always love you.

Here’s why Sridevi is Irreplaceable in Indian Films

1

Usually, the norm that female leads would flourish with just glamour goes around in film circles. While the heroes have to strive hard to look good, act good , fight and even dance good, it looks like the female leads have lesser say and if they have good looks- the job is 90% done. Thanks to today’s cosmetic revolution and color correction filters, even good looks is easier to get by (That’s another story altogether!).

We have witnessed actresses being embodiment of grace and performance in the black and white era but the childlike personality, chirpiness, and an amazing balance between stunning looks and performance was an unattainable dream. But one petite actress named Sridevi turned the tables in the 70s decade by not just achieving all this, and also surpassing it.

Her presence in Padaharella Vayasu song- Sirimalle Poova needs no explanation. While most of her contemporaries were laden in makeup, artificial appearances and flashy dresses, Sridevi looked like an angel in white half saree- becoming a role model for young women and heartthrob for men! The natural beauty she showcased in the film was a replica of rustic women of South Indian villages! Though Sridevi edged to umpteen glamorous roles later, there was an inevitable grace and poise associated with her which no other female lead (till date) could get to.

While Sridevi is best remembered for her obvious stunning looks, her inner talent was always sidelined. She was tremendously good in comedy timing (Kshana Kshanam is the best example!) and danced like a dream. It was a rare occasion to see a heroine display glamour so effortlessly and also be extremely comfortable in it- Sridevi did both these with perfection!

Sridevi is considered to have won more hearts with lesser skin show which proves time and again that- beauty is a personality, not just a bunch of good looks! Personality evolves with time and grows with experiences- Sridevi is a perfect example of it. She was a thorough professional when it came to acting, but also had a charming personality which kept her smile intact and express poise.

No matter how many beautiful actresses come and grace the world of Telugu Cinema, the mark made by Sridevi will be timeless and eternal. She has inspired generations of women who appreciate the childlike nature in them and evolve completely as a personality!

Sridevi also had that inner plea where she deserved to look beyond that charming smile and good looks. So, whenever you watch a Sridevi movie now as a tribute- watch her personality and attitude- and fall in love with her once again!

Telugu360 deeply regrets the loss of Sridevi and wishes her family lot of strength and support.
