The much hyped Independence Day releases seems to be taking all advantage of the long weekend with a stupendous run at the worldwide box office. While Rajinikanth starrer ‘Coolie’ continues the dominate most of the territories including Telugu states, War 2 gained huge momentum in Hindi circuits on the second day. After a record breaking start with over 150 Crores on the first day, Coolie put on another strong day at the box office on Friday. Meanwhile, War 2 benefitted largely from impressive collections for the Hindi version when the numbers in Telugu states have been quite disappointing.
As per trade estimates, Coolie registered a solid second day with a stunning haul of 90 Crores( approximately) to take the overall total past 240 Crores in just two days. The film now might target the 400 Crore mark by the end of weekend if the same trend of walk ins continue on Saturday and Sunday. Despite getting mixed word of mouth and moderate reviews, the Lokesh Kanagaraj directional continues to draw massive crowds in Overseas and Tamil Nadu. In Telugu states, Coolie managed to edge past War 2 in some areas.
Bollywood action drama War 2 remained steady in Hindi markets and show a considerable drop in Telugu states and overseas. The Hindi version contributed a major chunk of the second day collections and saved the day for War 2. The film grossed close to 50 Crores in North India on Friday and managed to amass 80 Crores to take the total past 160 Crores mark. The biggest setback for War 2 is that the collections in AP and Telangana failed to live up to the expectations. Trade circles were expecting triple digit due to Independence day holiday. However, it failed to pick up due to the disappointing talk.
Both War 2 and Coolie will need a terrific Saturday and Sunday to end the first weekend on a high note because the revenues are likely to see a steep fall from Monday due to the disappointing reviews.
