Telangana makes wearing of masks compulsory

0

Continuing its efforts to check the spread of coronavirus, the Telangana government has made wearing of face masks compulsory for people whenever they step out of their homes.

People in closed spaces and while talking to others should also wear the masks.

The Health Department has updated an earlier advisory on ‘Masks only for the sick’ to ‘Mask on while stepping outdoors, in closed spaces and while interacting with others’.

The orders noted that the studies in Japan have shown that wearin masks slowed the spread of coronavirus.

“This revision of advice is based on the learning that a large number of infected people do not show any symptoms – are asymptomatic – but are still carriers of the infection and can infect others.”

It pointed out that coronavirus infection spreads through droplets released while sneezing, coughing and talking. Thus, marks will prevent the droplets from escaping and potentially infect others and will also protect a person from inhaling droplets carrying the virus.

The department recommended homemade cotton double-layer reusable masks as the first line of protection.

Twelve people have died of Covid-19 in Telangana with total positive cases reaching 471.

49 new cases take Telangana’s count to 453

0

As many as 49 new Covid-19 cases were reported in Telangana since Tuesday night, taking the total number of cases in the state to 453, State Health Minister Etela Rajender said on Wednesday.

He told reporters that 397 patients are currently undergoing treatment in government-run Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad, and said none of them were in critical condition.

Out of total 453 cases, 11 have died while 45 were discharged after treatment.

No death was reported and no one was discharged on Wednesday.

All the new positive cases are those who participated in Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi last month or their contacts.

The Health Minister said those tested positive would be treated only at Gandhi Hospital. Those found negative would be quarantined in districts.

Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao had said Monday that 1,058 people who attended Delhi meet were traced and going by the trend of positive cases, another 100-150 may test positive.

Thirty persons tested positive on Monday and 40 on Tuesday.

Barring 50 foreign returnees and their family members, all others who tested positive are Tablighi meet attendees and their contacts.

6 Malaysian Tablighis hiding in Hyderabad booked

0

Hyderabad police on Tuesday booked six Malaysians hiding in a mosque in the city after attending Tablighi Jamaat meeting in Delhi last month.

Police and health authorities shifted them to state-run Gandhi Hospital for quarantine.

A case under the Foreigners Act, and under various sections of Disaster Management Act, Epidemic Diseases Act and Indian Penal Code was booked against them at Banjara Hills police station.

Police said the Malaysians had not come forward to undergo COVID-19 tests despite appeal by the state government to all those who attended Tablighi event at Nizamuddin Markaz in mid-March.

The foreigners were allegedly hiding at a mosque in Toli Chowki area. Police also booked the incharge of the mosque for hiding the information about presence of the Malaysians.

Six Malaysians had reached Hyderabad after attending Tablighi congregation in Delhi and were stuck here due to suspension of international flights.

A police officer said they were booked under Indian Penal Code sections 420 (cheating), 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life)188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 109 (abetment).

They were also booked under various sections of Epidemic Diseases Act 1897 and Disaster Management Act 2005. Since the Malaysians had come on a tourist visa but attended religious meetings, they were also booked for violation of the Foreigners Act.

The Malaysians were booked a day after police in Telangana’s Karimnagar town booked 10 Indonesian Tablighi preachers who had tested positive last month. A case was also registered against two agents who accompanied from Delhi to Karimnagar and four local hosts in the town.

Lockdown may get extended as Modi govt ‘considering requests’

Multiple state governments and experts have requested the Central Government to extend the ongoing 21-day lockdown further and the Modi government is considering their suggestions, say government sources.

This comes a day after Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao made a strong case for the extension of the ongoing lockdown. Rao had advocated for the extension of the current shutdown saying, “The Centre and all other State Governments have lost revenue during the lockdown period. The only positive outcome of this is that we are able to protect our people.”

KCR also cited reports of the Boston Consulting Group survey, which asked for ruthless measures like extension of the lockdown till June.

The government’s group of ministers on Tuesday met at Defense minister Rajnath Singh’s residence where the issue of post shutdown scenario came up but no decision was taken on when to end it, said sources who attended the meeting.

The biggest question in front of the government is weighing in two options — loss of livelihood versus loss of life. However, any decision in this regard will come after Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with floor leaders and chief ministers where a common exit plan is to be discussed.

IANS reported on April 2 itself that the lockdown may not just end on April 14 itself, as initially planned. Prime Minister Modi was believed to have told chief ministers in his last CM conference that it is a ‘long drawn battle’, something he reiterated on Monday while he was addressing party cadres on the occasion of the BJP’s Foundation Day.

Soon after the CM conference by Prime Minister, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, from his Twitter account, declared: “The Prime Minister said that the State Government should not lift the lockdown immediately from April 15 but it should happen in phases. Precautions should be taken that there is no crowding.”

However, the government hasn’t made any assertion so far whether it is going to extend the current lockdown or not. But government sources have indeed confirmed that the Modi government is considering the requests to extend the shutdown.

For how long will the second lap of extension be if extension takes place, is still premature, insists the source. Any decision will be taken after the next chief ministers conference when each CM will come back with their own exit plans after forming task forces, as requested by PM Modi. Also there is a meeting by Modi scheduled with floor leaders of Parliament which may be used to build a consensus decision rather than an imposed decision.

Government sources indicate that the situation was complicated ever since the Tablighi Jamaat congregation led to steep rise in coronavirus infections as well as fatality tally.

As on Tuesday morning, India has surpassed 4400 coronavirus cases with 114 deaths at least.

34 new cases in AP, Kurnool tally 74. State needs more than ‘Paracetamol’

Just a few days back, the Chief Minister laughed off the virus prescribing ‘Paracetamol’ even as Opposition leader N Chandrababu expressed serious concern to Covid-19. Jagan called it a hoax. Today, the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread rapidly in Andhra Pradesh, infecting more than 303 people even as the government tries to slow the spread by enforcing lockdown and physical distancing guidelines. On Monday, AP reported 37 new positive corona cases all linked to Tablighi Jamaat religious congregation in South Delhi’s Nizamuddin.

AP’s surging infection rates are propelled by a startling number of cases in Kurnool which continued to top the virus tally in the state. The district reported 18 new cases taking its tally to 74 and triggering alarm bells in the government and the general public. Till Saturday, the district reported only four cases. Kurnool has now become the fulcrum of attention amid the Tablighi Jamaat episode with a majority of the congregation attendees hailing from this region in Andhra Pradesh. The AP government has estimated that more than 1,000 people from the state might have attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Markaz in Nizamuddin. In Rayalaseema alone, at least 150 people who were tested positive for the virus have been linked to Tablighi Jamaat congregation.

The State government has placed Kurnool on a high alert and declared 24-hour curfew in Nandyal. The state government has directed the district officials to strictly implement all the guidelines keeping in view the surge in coronavirus positive cases in the last few days. The district administration has intensified contact tracing since most of the positive cases were identified to be Jamaat returnees. Nellore reported 18 new cases, the total number of cases stand at 52, Kadapa reported four new cases pushing its total to 21.

The state government had attributed the spurt in Covid-19 cases to the large numbers of people from AP who returned homes after attending the Tablighi Jamaat congregation. In a recent video conference with cabinet colleagues, Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy had appealed to the people to refrain from blaming any particular community for the spread of the virus in the state.

With a sudden spike in positive cases of corona in AP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called up the Chief Minister and enquired about the measures being initiated by the state government to contain the spread of the contagion.

TDP president and former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu believes that AP still isn’t testing enough people to detect the outbreak’s true spread. As corona cases soar past 303 in AP with around 34 new cases reported on Monday, he said the state government should ramp up testing of coronavirus cases to detect if there were more cases that are probably going unreported. “Not conducting medical tests is not a good sign. This will prove to be detrimental to the people as the virus will spread if the government tries to under report or remain complacent in conducting medical tests,” he said. Naidu said the government’s response has been scattered and passive with hospitals running low on personal protective equipment and ventilators for patients.

Disinfectant tunnel installed at Telangana police HQ

0

A disinfectant tunnel called 3V Safe Tunnel to prevent local transmission of Covid-19 was installed at Telangana police headquarters on Saturday

Director General of Police Mahender Reddy walked through the tunnel to formally inaugurate it.

Installed by S3V Vascular Technologies Private Limited, it is the first-of-its-kind tunnel to be installed in Telangana.

Police personnel and healthcare professionals are in the front-line in the fight against Covid-19 and installing this disinfection tunnel is a step towards protecting them by minimizing transmission, said the medical device company that manufactures devices for the brain and heart.

According to Vijaya Gopal of S3V Vascular Technologies, the tunnel has been built to sanitize people within 20 seconds from any possible infectant bacteria and virus.

The tunnel uses an aerosol technology wherein the disinfectant solution is atomized into aerosol with a particle size of 1.5 microns to 20 microns.

The flow pattern of the disinfectant solution is designed to provide maximum protection to people passing through the tunnel in around 20 seconds. The atomized liquid spray saturates the environment and thus disinfects all surfaces, even those that are not directly exposed to the nozzles.

The disinfectant used consists of a combination of a water-soluble polymer and iodine. The disinfectant is non-volatile, having no detectable vapor pressure, forms a film which releases free iodine, thus enabling prolonged viricidal and bactericidal activity and sanitizing the surfaces. The solution has been proved to be effective against SARS, MERS and Ebola viruses.

Coronavirus victims are martyrs: Owaisi

0

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said on Thursday that those who died due to Covid-19 are martyrs.

The Hyderabad MP tweeted that those who die in epidemics get the status of martyrs in Islam and burial of martyrs does not require ‘ghusl’ (bath) or ‘kafan’ (shroud).

Owaisi said ‘namaz-e-janazah’ of such martyrs should offered immediately and the burial should be completed in the presence of few people.

The MP’s statement came at a time when the family members of those who died of Covid-19 are undergoing traumatic moments due to strict restrictions in disposal of bodies.

The pandemic has so far claimed nine lives in Telangana. All of them had attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi last month.

The bodies of the deceased are not being given ‘ghusl’, nor they are being clothed before burial. The guidelines issued by the Union Health Ministry allow the presence of only couple of relatives of the deceased.

The burial is being conducted under strict supervision of the authorities concerned and as per the standard operating procedure (SOP) laid down by the Centre for disposal of such bodies to prevent possible infection.

The SOP does not permit any family member to touch, kiss or hug the dead body.

India blacklists 960 foreigners, cancels visas for Tablighi links

0

India on Thursday blacklisted 960 foreigners involved in Tablighi Jamaat activities and also cancelled their tourist visas for violating the lockdown measures imposed nationwide to break the chain of novel coronavirus pandemic.

The Ministry of Home Affairs took the action amid its ongoing efforts to identify the contacts of over 9,000 identified Tabligi Jamaat workers who have been to the Tablighi Jamaat headquarters in Delhi’s Nizamuddin area, prompting authorities to intensify efforts to trace them since they may be carrying the virus and potentially infecting others.

“A total of 960 foreigners have been blacklisted and their Indian visas have also been canceled as the Ministry of Home Affairs found their involvement in Tablighi activities here on tourist visas,” Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted.

The Home Ministry has also directed the Director Generals of Police of all concerned states and Union Territories (UTs) and Delhi Commissioner of Police to take necessary legal action against all such violators, on priority, under relevant sections of the Foreigners Act, 1946 and Disaster Management Act, 2005.

The 960 foreigners are among those 1,306 who came from different countries here on tourist visas and took part in the congregation, organised by the Tablighi Jamaat at the Nizamuddin Markaz last month, which led to a sudden spike in coronavirus cases in different parts of the country.

In a frantic search for thousands of people who participated in the congregation, the government on Wednesday directed the states and Union Territories (UTs) to complete their contact tracing on a “war footing” to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.

Covid-19 positive cases in Andhra rise to 143

The number of Covid-19 positive cases in Andhra Pradesh rose to 143 on Thursday as 32 people tested positive since Wednesday night.

As many as 99 of those tested positive had attended the Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi.

According to a medical bulletin released by the Health Department at 6 p.m. Thursday, 123 samples were tested since 10 a.m. Three samples tested positive in the afternoon while eight more were tested positive in the evening. Results of 409 samples are still awaited.

A bulletin issued in the morning said 21 samples had tested positive since Wednesday night.

Now govt health workers attacked in Nizamabad

0

Government health workers and volunteers were attacked by a violent mob in Nizamabad neighbourhood on Thursday. Trouble began when the health workers and volunteers visited the area to screen residents for signs of novel coronavirus infection on some of the residents who believed to have attended the large religious congregation in Markaz Masjid in South Delhi’s Nizamuddin. Refusing to be tested for signs of corona virus, a violent mob of at least 60-100 people started chasing the health workers and volunteers by pelting stones.

The Telangana government had recently appealed to the people to voluntarily disclose if they attended the Tablighi Jamaat in Nizamuddin between March 13-March 15 and give their blood samples to the government hospitals to check for corona virus.

The video footage broadcast by the mainstream TV channels on Thursday showed the visuals of some healthcare workers dressed in light blue PPE (personal protective equipment) suits being chased by the mob by pelting stones.

As the minute-long video plays out, the small group of locals soon turned into a mob of around 60-100 violent residents shouting abuses, throwing stones and chasing them down the narrow lane.

More than 60 people from Nizamabad district had attended the religious congregation Tablighi Jamaat in Nizamuddin. At least, six people from Telangana who attended the religious congregation at Markaz in South Delhi’s Nizamuddin from March 13-15 succumbed after they contracted coronavirus. Two died in Gandhi Hospital while one each died in Apollo Hospital, Global Hospital, Nizamabad and Gadwal.

While appealing to the people to disclose if they attended the religious gathering in Nizamuddin, the Telangana CMO confirmed that six people who died had attended the congregation.

In a complete disregard to the law of the land and in complete defiance of the Telangana government’s directive to the people to voluntarily come for medical tests, the violent mob attacked the government health workers and volunteers with impunity right in front of the media.

Attacks on medical personnel and healthcare workers have worsened over the past few days. On Wednesday, doctors at Hyderabad’s Gandhi Hospital were attacked after a patient infected with the novel coronavirus died. Following the death, the brother of the deceased along with hundreds of relatives, friends and family members ransacked the hospital and roughed up some doctors and paramedical staff.

Hyderabad police commissioner Anjani Kumar rushed to the hospital along with his colleagues. The doctors at the Hyderabad have claimed protection from the government and an assurance from Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. They have also written to the police.

Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali should explain what action the government will initiate against such deplorable and dastardly attacks against the health workers and volunteers who were just supporting the government’s efforts to contain and tackle the spread of corona virus so that millions of people live to see tomorrow.

Nearly 111 +ve cases in AP are because of infection of Nizamuddin meet attendees and their local contacts.

Jagan explained to Modi how the state government is segregating and giving treatment to all patients and suspects in isolation and quarantine wards.
