Will YS Jagan join KCR-led Federal Front?

0

It is now clear as crystal that TRS Supremo and Telangana CM KCR has intensified efforts to form a federal front. He is putting all his energies in bringing all anti-BJP forces on one platform. He has already held discussions with Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin and followed it up by another meet with Kerala’s Communist CM Pinarayi Vijayan.

But, the big question is what will be YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s stand on the issue of Federal Front so that they can emerge as a strong force by the time the Presidential elections are held. Will Jagan join the Federal Front? Will he take the plunge and take on the might of the BJP, which is ruling the Centre?

YS Jagan has always played safe and stayed closer to the NDA, though not joining it officially. He had even obliged the BJP by giving one Rajya Seat to the Reliance nominee Nathani. The YSRCP, the Biju Janata Dal and the AIADMK have always played with ambivalence and backed the NDA when needed. But will Jagan show the dare and join the anti-BJP league? Will he show the gall to take on the BJP?

There is every possibility of KCR contacting the TDP in Andhra Pradesh to solicit its support. Interestingly, in 2017 when Ram Nath Kovind was the presidential candidate, both TDP and the YSRCP had sided with the NDA. Will they do the same thing this time or will they join the anti-BjP front? Let’s wait and see.

As BJP and Modi weaken, will KCR revive Federal Front now?

TRS chief and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao was more than happy on Sunday (today) after the counting trends in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala clearly indicated the downfall of BJP and more so Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

There was a buzz in TRS circles that KCR tracked counting trends in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala more than Nagarjunasagar Assembly bypoll as he was very much confident of TRS victory in Nagarjunasagar.

Speculations were rife that KCR was overjoyed after it became clear that Mamata Banerjee, MK Stalin and Pinarayi Vijayan are going to become the CMs of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

This is because all the three leaders are close to KCR whom KCR met in 2018 and 2019 as part of his efforts to forge a Federal Front against BJP and Modi.

However, KCR became silent after Modi became PM for second term with an absolute majority in April 2019 Lok Sabha polls and Modi emerged more stronger.

Fearing stronger Modi and BJP, KCR again confined to Telangana politics since then.

However, with BJP and Modi receiving a jolt in election in big states West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, KCR is now keen to revive his Federal Front from where he left in 2019.

KCR feels that the time is right now to strike back at weaker Modi and BJP.

KCR may shift his focus to national politics yet again and make his son KT Rama Rao as CM of Telangana anytime soon, say party sources.

KCR’s Federal Front dream shattered with poll results

0

The crushing defeat of non-NDA parties in Lok Sabha elections shattered the dreams of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, who was looking to play a key role at the Centre.

The results came as a huge blow to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief who was working to cobble up a “Federal Front” to form a non-BJP, non-Congress government at the Centre.

KCR, as Rao is popularly known, was even being seen as the potential prime ministerial candidate by his party in the event of regional parties emerging as a major bloc in the Lok Sabha.

What is more shocking for KCR is that his party could not achieve the goal of making a clean sweep in Telangana.

KCR’s party was aiming to win 16 seats leaving Hyderabad for its ally All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Both the BJP and the Congress dealt a blow to the TRS’ plans as they were together ahead in seven constituencies.

KCR’s daughter K. Kavitha failed to retain her Nizamabad seat. She was one of the 11 MPs of the TRS in previous Lok Sabha.

The outcome is shocking for the TRS as it came barely six months after it retained power in Telangana with a landslide victory, winning 88 seats in 119-member Assembly.

It was after this huge win that KCR had revived his plans for Federal Front by meeting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who head the Trinamool Congress and the Biju Janata Dal, respectively.

A few days ago, the TRS chief stepped up his efforts by holding talks with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, of the Communist Party of India-Marxist, and DMK leader M.K. Stalin.

It was in March last year KCR had who proposed the Federal Front to bring what he called a qualitative change in national politics. He had held series of meetings with leaders of various non-NDA parties.

After the massive victory in Assembly elections, KCR had appointed his son K. T. Rama Rao as the Working President of the TRS so that he can focus on national politics. This was also seen as an attempt to pave way for Rama Rao to take over as Chief Minister in the event of KCR moving to Delhi.

In 2014, the TRS had won 11 Lok Sabha seats while Congress had bagged two. The BJP, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the AIMIM had won a seat each.

The MPs of the YSRCP and the TDP and one of the two MPs of Congress had later switched loyalties to the TRS.

Working to form ‘Federal Front’ for a say in policy-making at Centre: TRS

0

With just one round of polling remaining, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) on Saturday expressed confidence that the regional political parties would garner a major chunk of Lok Sabha seats and would bind in the form of a ‘Federal Front’ for governance at the Centre.

TRS chief K. Chandrashekar Rao has been making efforts for months to form a Federal Front and has personally met Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and CPI-M leader and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

He is also in touch with YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief Jaganmohan Reddy and leaders of some other political parties for this purpose.

Rao, who is popularly known as KCR, also met DMK chief M.K. Stalin recently besides holding talks with Janata Dal (Secular) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy. Significantly, both the DMK and the JD(S) are allies of the Congress, unlike the SP, TMC, BJD, CPI-M and YSRCP, which have so far displayed equidistance from both the BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led coalitions.

Rao’s close associate and TRS MP B. Vinod Kumar told IANS over phone that although the party chief was in touch with leaders like Naveen Patnaik, Mamata Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav, the discussions were not about who will go where.

He said KCR was in touch with the leaders of various political parties with regard to the formation of a Federal Front.

“When we met Kerala Chief Minister (Vijayan), he also agreed. KCR also spoke to the Karanataka Chief Minister,” Kumar said, adding, “All of us will sit together and put forward the decisions before the new government.”

However, the “political strategy” will be finalised after the election results are declared, Kumar said.

When pointed out that DMK and JD-S, whose leaders KCR had met, were already part of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and whether there was any scope of them leaving the Congress-led alliance, the TRS leader reminded how the UPA was formed after the 2004 Lok Sabha elections and how the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was formed after the 1998 polls.

“KCR’s concern is that whatever formulation emerges after the elections, we should put forward our issues by supporting that formulation,” the TRS leader said.

Asked about a possibility of TRS, BJD and YSRCP jointly deciding on a common strategy after the elections, Kumar said, “It will depend on the outcome of the polls and whether there will be a necessity of these parties.”

Accordingly, a call will also be taken as to which parties to go with, he said.

Kumar, who accompanied his party chief for the meeting with Stalin in Chennai earlier this week, said the discussions focused on how regional parties should have a say in the policy decisions of the government of India.

He said despite the country having a federal structure, the regional parties don’t have a say in the governance at the Centre.

This is the idea behind the ‘Federal Front’, which aims to ensure that the interests of states are taken care of, he said.

“We want that regional parties should have a say in policy decisions of the government of India,” the TRS leader said, adding that the main issues were devolution of funds to the states and other matters related to the Concurrent List of the Constitution.

To ensure that, regional parties have to be together and bargain, Kumar said.

“Our idea is that we want to push forward our Federal Front agenda, i.e., the states should be given more power, they should be considered while taking major decisions. We want to discuss all these points. We don’t know who will agree to this or what will be the outcome. All these things will happen only after May 23,” Kumar said.

“We are together (the Federal Front parties). The NDA had surfaced only after the results of 1998 elections. Likewise, the UPA only surfaced after the elections (of 2004). Some new formulation will come out after the results,” the TRS leader said.

“We have issues concerning states which are ruled by the regional political parties. There are many subjects under the Concurrent List which we think should be deleted. Education, health all these issues. There are also other issues regarding devolution of funds,” he said.

On the prospective outcome of the Lok Sabha polls, he said, “TRS believes that regional parties will get a major share of seats”.

When asked about the contentious issue of who would be the Prime Ministerial candidate of a regional front, if it is in a position to form the government, the TRS leader merely said, “We will discuss, debate and finalise after the results are out.”

Federal Front may consider taking Congress support: TRS leader

0

The Federal Front proposed by Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao may consider taking Congress support, if necessary, to form a government at the Centre, a leader of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) said on Tuesday.

TRS spokesman Abid Rasool Khan told IANS that they were confident that the Federal Front, comprising non-BJP and non-Congress parties, will get the numbers to form the government on its own.

“We are confident that we will get the numbers to form the government but if we are short of numbers and Congress wants to extend outside support we will consider,” said Khan, who believes a consensus candidate among Federal Front partners will be the next Prime Minister.

He, however, ruled out either taking the support of BJP or extending support to it to form the government.

KCR, as Rao is popularly known, had mooted the idea of non-BJP and non-Congress front last year and since held talks with leaders of various regional parties.

The TRS chief on Monday met M.K. Stalin, leader of DMK, an ally of the Congress, to discuss the Federal Front. Last week, he held talks with his Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan.

“These meetings prompted the whole country to talk about the Federal Front. We are meeting people, talking to them and trying to explain why we want this. After that it is their choice whether they want to come with us or not,” said Khan, who quit the Congress late last year.

He was confident that parties like Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Samajwadi Party (SP), Trinamool Congress and YSR Congress besides TRS will come together to form the Federal Front. He hoped that many parties from other parts of the country will join them.

“Once we have the numbers on board, more people will definitely accept the idea and join us. Everybody would want to have stake in government for development of their states and would see this as a viable idea,” said Khan.

The TRS leader claimed that KCR was not vying for the post of Prime Minister.

“He is doing this in the interest of the country. The country is today heading towards anarchy. The way BJP is acting it has definitely sabotaged the interests of the country. The Congress during its 60-year-rule did nothing for minorities and Dalits. KCR is of the opinion that we should form Federal Front and take charge in Delhi,” Khan added.

Tamil media and analysts call KCR’s front Modi’s Plan-B

0

It is known news that KCR’s meeting with Stalin did not go on expected lines. KCR’s plan of pulling DMK out of UPA to support the federal front with only regional parties did not work out as Stalin asked KCR to support UPA instead. After this meeting, Tamil started focusing and analyzing KCR’s federal front.

KCR has been mulling the idea of federal front for almost one year now. He has been talking about the possibility of forming the central government without Congress and BJP. However, many political parties, especially in Telugu states are calling KCR an agent of Modi and predicting that KCR will support Modi after elections. Some leaders in Telugu states called Federal front as Modi’s Plan-B almost one year back.

Now Tamil media and politicians debating in Tamil channels are pointing exactly the same thing and saying KCR’s front is Modi’s plan-B. They are even questioning why KCR is meeting only UPA allies and not opening any debate with Shiv sena or Akalidal or Nitish Kumar who are supporting NDA. They are questioning the genuineness of KCR’s federal front and quoting, “If KCR is really serious about the federal front with regional parties, he should discuss with parties supporting NDA as well”.

Results will be out in less than 10 days and political climate is warming up again across the country.

Why KCR not campaigning for Federal Front in other states?

0

Telangana Ramulamma mocked and cracked jokes on the Federal Front of CM Chandrasekhar Rao. Why is KCR not moving out of Hyderabad to campaign for his front in other states? Vijayashanti, presently Congress Campaign Committee Chairperson, recalled how KCR visited Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal prior to elections. He made tall claims about how regional parties would be brought into his front.

Ramulamma’s mocking statements assumed significance as unlike KCR, there’s AP CM Chandrababu Naidu who is being invited by different parties to campaign for them in different states. Naidu already campaigned for the JDS in Karnataka. Is it a fact that nobody is inviting KCR to campaign for them? Vijayashanti is leaving no chance to embarrass the TRS leadership. Her latest comments followed political speculation that Federal Front couldn’t get expected patronage because of lack of trust in KCR. In national politics, Chandrababu exposed KCR’s secret deal with PM Modi. So, regional parties are very cautious about KCR.

Chandrababu fires at Jagan over KCR’s Federal Front

0

AP CM Chandrababu Naidu made fun of Jaganmohan Reddy’s statements with regard to KCR’s Federal Front. Naidu accused Jagan of beginning another drama promising Andhra people to bring special status by working with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). CBN challenged Jagan and KCR to form an open alliance and contest the AP election unitedly if they were really genuine in their efforts to help the AP cause.

Naidu gave his strong comments on the Jagan-KTR meeting on carrying forward the Federal Front plans among regional parties in the country. He said Jagan, KCR and PM Modi are all working together to hurt and damage the prospects of AP in development and welfare sectors all through. The Modi government has to release Rs. 75,000 crore to AP towards its promised assistance to the state as part of separate statehood.

CBN said while PM Modi and KCR are doing outright injustice to AP, Jagan is colluding with them as part of secret deals to cause further damage to AP people. Naidu said KCR and Jagan are forming not Federal Front but it is Modi Front with their aim only to bring back Modi to power at the Centre and destroy AP forever. CBN asserted his TDP party will work with all anti-BJP parties in the country to prevent Modi from continuing as PM in coming election.

Will KCR’s Federal Front fulfill Mamata’s PM dream?

0

Telangana CM K Chandrasekhara Rao has met West Bengal CM Mamata Bennerjee recently to gather support for his Federal Front efforts. She has not given any commitment to KCR but welcomed regional parties to work against the Bharatiya Janata Party in the states. But now her Trinamool Congress leaders have almost announced Mamata’s bid to run for the prime minister’s post in the 2019 election.

Actually, there are some regional parties that want to form a strong pre-poll alliance with Rahul Gandhi as prime ministerial candidate to counter the Modi government in the election. The DMK has already announced this. The TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu has said no PM candidate has been announced from the side of Mahakutami as of now.

Seeing Mamata’s prime ministerial aspirations, KCR has approached her with his proposal for Federal Front. The Congress and TDP leaders see this as a clever move by KCR in order to widen differences between Mamata and Mahakutami only to benefit the BJP eventually. It should be recalled KCR has met with Modi after visiting the states’ leaders. TDP has raised doubts about this visit. Now questions arose whether KCR will support Mamata’s prime ministerial dreams so as to divide anti-BJP alliances to benefit Modi.

Anti-BJP parties come together but unlikely to form Federal Front

0

The anti-BJP front gained currency this year in the wake of BJP’s defeats in Kairana, Phulpur and Gorakhpur parliamentary by polls in Uttar Pradesh by the coming together of SP, BSP and RLD and as 2018 winds up the parties are now emboldened to go for the kill against BJP in the coming Lok Sabha polls.

Interestingly, however, the Congress victory in the Hindi heartland in the recent Assembly elections, has come as a dampener for some of the ambitious regional parties who want to have a major say in how the next government is formed.

In that context, rather than a single focussed anti-BJP front, analysts feel the situation is now ripe for a state-level alliances to take on the saffron party and for a Federal Front post Lok Sabha polls depending on the final numbers that come out it. Each regional party, except those like DMK and RJD which have shown their preference for Congress, would like to maximise its gains for acquiring
bargaining power after the elections.

There is a unity of purpose in Congress and several other opposition parties to “defeat BJP-RSS” in the Lok Sabha polls and several meetings have been held over the past year to build momentum against the Narendra Modi government.

The year saw efforts by Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, TDP leader and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and NCP chief Sharad Pawar to bring state parties together along with the Congress on an anti-BJP platform.

The ground for opposition unity was laid by Congress as it held meetings todecide joint candidates for presidential and vice presidential elections. Congress has consolidated its position in the opposition block after ousting BJP from power in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh but it needs allies in crucial states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. It has also lost its status as the pre-eminent party of the north-east.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who has taken part in joint protests with other parties over policies of the Narendra Modi government, has been talking of the opposition parties together defeating the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in the 2019 polls.

The meeting of 21 anti-BJP opposition parties earlier this month decided come out with “a programme of work” over the next few months amid growing realisation that state-specific alliances will need to be worked out and a pan-India grand alliance was a near impossibility. But there is still no clarity about how and when these ground level alliances will take shape even though only about four months are left for the general elections.

Even in Bihar, where an alliance between anti-BJP parties is a certainty, there is no clarity of who will fight in how many seats. The BJP-led NDA has sorted out its seat arrangement in the state.

There is already some dissonance visible among the anti-BJP parties with Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party not attending the meeting of opposition parties earlier this month called at the initiative of Naidu. There is no clarity if Congress will be part of their proposed tie-up in Uttar Pradesh which sends 80 MPs to Lok Sabha.

Telangana Rashtra Samiti leader K. Chandrasekhar Rao has also revived his efforts to forge a non-BJP, non-Congress platform after returning to power in Telanagana. Parties such as YSR Congress party, Biju Janata Dal, Indian National Lok Dal and Janata Congress Chhattisgarh may find an anti-BJP, anti-Congress platform more suitable to their political ambitions.

Barring states where BJP and Congress are major players or where there is a NDA versus UPA battle, most states are likely to witness a multi-cornered contests in the Lok Sabha polls.

Two important political events next month – Mayawati’s birthday on January 15 and the rally being organised by Mamata Banerjee on January 19 – are expected to bring some clarity on how opposition parties will shape their alliances in the Lok Sabha polls.

The anti-BJP parties have common issues against the Narendra Modi government including hardships caused by demonetisation, “flawed” implementation Goods and Service Tax, “misuse” of central agencies to target opponents, “intolerance”, “corruption” and farmer distress.

They have also put off the contentious decision of prime ministerial choice after the Lok Sabha elections and DMK leader M K. Stalin’s projection of Congress President Rahul Gandhi for the post has not found many takers. BSP chief Mayawati and Mamata Banerjee are seen as the other contenders for the post.

There was also broad opposition unity over demand for joint parliamentary probe on the Rafale fighter jet deal but the Samajwadi Party has seemingly broken ranks after the Supreme Court verdict on pleas seeking a probe.

Puducherry CM terms Federal Front as day dream of KCR

0

Hyderabad: Velu Narayanasamy, the 10th chief minister of the union territory (UT) of Puducherry since June 2016, has termed Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s mission to form Federal Front as a day dream, while ruling out any possibility for such a platform in the national politics.

However, he opined that there should be a national level policy on river water sharing. For this, the Centre should involve all the states as stakeholders to evolve a procedure after arriving a common consensus. The Centre didn’t take opinions of Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Kekedatu dam on Kaveri river, and has issued approvals. It’s nothing but unilateral decision of the Centre.

“I agree that all the states and ruling parties should come onto a common platform to discuss and resolve burning issues among states. But, what KCR is working on a Federal front involving regional parties barring Congress and BJP. This may not be possible. KCR’s mission Federal Front wouldn’t take off,” he said.

Narayanasamy is an Congress politician and he previously served as Member of Parliament, representing Puducherry in the Lok Sabha.

Federal Front will be game changer: Kavitha

1

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is confident that the proposed Federal Front will emerge as a strong alternative political platform before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and will be a “game changer”, a party leader said on Tuesday.

The formation of the Federal Front — an anti-BJP and anti-Congress platform mooted by TRS chief and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao — is under process, said his daughter and party MP K. Kavitha.

“Our country needs an alternative political platform which is non-BJP and non-Congress. The Federal Front is an idea to get into an alliance wherein both these parties did not perform to the expectations of the people,” she told reporters at the Indian Women’s Press Corps (IWPC) here.

Kavitha, the first woman MP from Telangana who represents Nizamabad, said that the party supremo was in talks with like-minded people and the front agenda will soon be put before the public.

“The TRS as a party does not believe in north-south divide. KCR has reached out to not just southern leaders but also Mamata Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav as well. The situation and equation will determine who all are going to be part of this platform,” she said.

On TRS’s equation with the BJP, Kavitha said that the TRS has maintained cordial relations with the Centre and not with an individual party in power.

“KCR believes that the state should always have a working relationship with the central government. We are the youngest state (in India) and we have a working relationship with the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will continue because it is essential,” Kavitha said.

Asked about extending support to any national party, especially the BJP, Kavitha clarified that TRS stands as a strong regional party and won’t go for coalition with either of the two big political parties.

“Why should we be close to the BJP? We have always been at arms length from both the BJP and the Congress.”

As for KCR’s presence at the swearing-in of H.D. Devegowda as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on Wednesday, Kavitha said the Telangana Chief Minister has already met him in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister’s office in Hyderabad confirmed that Rao will not be able to attend the ceremony due to some official engagements. However, informed sources said, Rao did not want to share the dias with Congress leaders and thus met Kumaraswamy a day earlier.
