Google contractors listening to your bedroom talks via Assistant

0

Third-party contractors working for Google are recording and secretly listening to your bedroom conversations via Google Assistant on smartphones, home speakers and security cameras, a new report has claimed, stressing that such recordings raise serious questions about privacy of users.

According to Belgian broadcaster VRT NWS, users’ conversations with Google Home speakers are being recorded and audio clips are being sent to sub-contractors who are “transcribing the audio files for subsequent use in improving Google’s speech recognition”.

VRT NWS, with the help of a whistleblower, was able to listen to more than 1,000 excerpts recorded via Google Assistant.

“In these recordings, we could clearly hear addresses and other sensitive information. This made it easy for us to find the people involved and confront them with the audio recordings,” said the report on Wednesday.

The transcribers heard just everything: personal information, bedroom talks, domestic violence and what not about Google Assistant users in Belgium and the Netherlands.

VRT “overheard countless men searching for porn, arguments between spouses, and even one case in which a woman seemed to be in an emergency situation”.

What is more worrisome is that the platform that the whistleblower showed to VRT had recordings from all over the world.

In India, Amazon Echo led the Indian smart speakers market with 59 per cent share in 2018, followed by Google Home with 39 per cent unit share, according to International Data Corporation (IDC).

A total of 753,000 units were shipped in 2018 in the country. Google Home Mini outsold all other smart speaker models, emerging as a top seller.

The Belgian broadcaster said the recordings were done despite the fact that some of Google Home users did not even say the wake word, “Ok Google”.

In a statement, Google said it only transcribes and uses “about 0.2 per cent of all audio clips”, to improve their voice recognition technology.

“The company has launched an investigation because the contractor breached data security policies,” said the Google spokesperson.

The news comes at a time when Amazon Alexa is already facing scrutiny for allegedly recording conversations at home.

Amazon has been sued by a Massachusetts woman on behalf of her 10-year-old daughter and children from eight other US states.

Filed in a federal court in Seattle, the lawsuit alleges Amazon of saving “voice prints” of millions of children by unlawfully recording their conversations around Alexa-enabled smart devices, reports Vox news.

Earlier in May, US Senators and a group of 19 consumer and public health advocates accused Amazon for recording and saving conversations that take place around its smart speakers, urging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate into the case.

Amazon has time and again denied the charge that Alexa records private conversations.

The company, however, admitted it does not always delete the stored data that it obtains through its voice assistant Alexa and Echo line-up of smart devices.

As reported by the CNET, Brian Huseman, Amazon’s Vice President of Public Policy, responded to Delaware Senator Chris Coons on June 28, informing that Amazon keeps the transcripts until users “manually delete the information”.

80% Indian internet users browse YouTube: Google

0

With the increasing penetration of smartphones, data becoming affordable and ever-growing availability of content, 80 per cent of internet users across all age-groups in the country are accessing YouTube, Google India said on Friday.

The Google-owned company highlighted how YouTube is associated with India’s internet growth story at “Brandcast 2018” event as it celebrated its 10th anniversary in the country since its launch in 2008.

“For brands, YouTube is now an end-to-end platform and as per the December 2017 ‘ComScore Video Metrix Multi-Platform’ it reaches 85 per cent of all highly engaged internet users, in the 18 years and above age-group,” Rajan Anandan, Vice-President, South East Asia and India, Google, said in a statement.

Touching 225 million monthly active users on mobile alone, India is one of the fastest-growing countries for the video platform, the company said.

“We now have more than 300 channels with over a million subscribers, from just 16 channels in 2014. We will continue to invest in programmes to support creators, and encourage more diversity and distribution of their content,” said Robert Kyncl, Chief Business Officer, YouTube.

The total number of online video consumers is expected to reach 500 million by 2020, the company said citing a report by FICCI-EY.

Google Street View offers peek into US voting pattern

0

Combining publicly available data from Google Street View with machine-learning methods, researchers have found a way to predict the voting behaviour of people in the US.

If the number of sedans in a city is higher than the number of pickup trucks, that city is likely to vote for a Democrat in the next presidential election (88 per cent chance), showed the study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Otherwise, the city is likely to vote for a Republican (82 per cent chance), the study said.

Using machine learning, an approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI) in which computers “learn”, the researchers developed a model that showed that socioeconomic attributes such as income, education, and voting patterns can be inferred from cars detected in Google Street View images.

“Our model works by discovering associations between cars and people,” the study said.

In the study led by Timnit Gebru of Stanford University, the researchers presented a method that estimates socioeconomic characteristics of regions spanning 200 US cities by using 50 million images of street scenes gathered with Google Street View cars.

In order to get their AI algorithms to classify cars accurately, the researchers trained it by recruiting hundreds of people to identify vehicles in a sample of millions of pictures, TechCrunch reported on Tuesday.

The researchers determined the make, model and year of all motor vehicles encountered in particular neighbourhoods.

Data from this census of motor vehicles, which enumerated 22 million automobiles in total (eight per cent of all automobiles in the US), were used to accurately estimate income, race, education, and voting patterns.

The results showed that the number of sedans and pickup trucks encountered during a drive through a city could reveal how the city would vote in the next presidential election.

To confirm the accuracy of their voter preference estimates, the researchers compared them with the voting results of the 2008 presidential election.

The researchers found that the results confirmed the ability of their approach to accurately estimate voter behaviour.

The team believes that their technology can supplement the American Community Survey, which is a door-to-door study and costs more than $250 million each year to perform.

Automated data analysis may become a practical supplement to the survey, the researchers said.

Google Amazon war: Amazon’s own youtube coming soon

0

The ongoing war between Google and Amazon entered the next level as there are sufficient reports by now that Amazon working on its own youtube. A couple of weeks back, Google announced that it would obliterate the YouTube app from Amazon’s devices like Echo Show and Fire TV. After this, Amazon filed for trademark requests for ‘Amazon Tube’ and ‘Open Tube’. So, by connecting the dots, experts analyzing that Amazon’s own youtube is coming soon.

Dispute began as Amazon decided on the policy of not selling Google-owned products that compete with Amazon devices such as the Chromecast Chromecast Ultra, and Google Home on Amazon platforms. Google has been protesting this policy and finally it decided to retaliate. So, on December 5, Google posted a message that YouTube app on Fire TV devices (Amazon device) would be removed from January 1st, 2018.

Alerted with this, Amazon started working on its own youtube, that would be called Amazontube or opentube. The product description for Amazon Tube or Open Tube nowhere mentions youtube but its long description reminds us of youtube. The description goes like – “non-downloadable pre-recorded audio, visual and audiovisual works via wireless networks on a variety of topics of general interest.”
The description sure sounds a lot like YouTube’s services.

Whether Amazon will actually work through with this till the end and starts this opentube or amazontube or need to be seen. YouTube’s presence in the video-sharing space is huge, and competing with youtube and succeeding in that is definitely be a gargantuan task, even for a giant like Amazon. Several attempts by various other companies have been done to shake youtube but in vein. Moreover, some reports say, Google and Amazon have been trying to resolve their disputes before the end of the year.
