Modi Go Back – PM’s Vizag visit triggers protests

0

PM Modi’s visit to Visakhapatnam has given a chance to rivals to launch protests over railway zone. The cancellation of decades-old Waltair railway division has drawn criticism from the TDP leaders. Modi Go Back posters and banners came up in Visakhapatnam and other places. The Vizag railway zone promise was not fulfilled properly and there’s much loss to the AP State because of this unjustified action by the Modi government at the Centre.

Modi will arrive to address a public meeting at Railway Maidan grounds in Vizag on Friday evening. As expected, the BJP leaders tried to make lot of political buzz on railway zone promise fulfillment. But the TDP didn’t give them any chance. CM Chandrababu Naidu in no time exposed injustice done to AP state. The Centre has given railway zone but it has nullified the prestigious Waltair division. Moreover, the cargo revenue of over Rs 7500 crore would now go to Odisha.
The BJP North Coastal Andhra leaders are now a worried lot. Their efforts to get political advantage out of railway zone just backfired because of unjust action of the Centre.

Modi cheated AP again…. tweeted Nara Lokesh

0

The Central government, on Wednesday, announced railway zone for Visakhapatnam prior to the visit of Narendra Modi to Andhra Pradesh. The long-awaited railway zone is one of the major promises made at the time of separation of Andhra Pradesh. But with the decision to further divide Waltair zone into Vizag Zone and Rayagada zone, the majority of the income goes to Rayagada.

Andhra Pradesh IT minister Nara Lokesh tweeted that Narendra Modi proved that he is a betrayer by this announcement of new railway zone. He opined that Modi killed the mother (Waltair division) by giving birth to the baby (Vizag railway).

Lokesh stated that Narendra Modi did injustice to Andhra Pradesh at the time of bifurcation and gave the income generating Hyderabad city to Telangana. Modi is now doing the same with Waltair division. With Modi’s decision to divide Rayagada zone from Vizag zone, the income generated region will go to Orissa.

Lokesh also tweeted that the goods transport brings an income of Rs.6500 crores to Waltair division. It is Narendra Modi’s betrayal to give those 6500 crore income generated region to Rayagada region and leave 500 crore rupees generated region to Vizag region. Many are questioning, without Vizag division why give Vizag railway zone.

Times Online Poll: 84 per cent voted for Modi for PM again

0

The Time Group held an online poll among 2 lakh voters across the country. It revealed that 83 per cent respondents thought the BJP-led NDA alliance will come back to power in 2019 election. Also, 84 per cent participants wanted Narendra Modi to become PM again. Rahul Gandhi got just 8.33 per cent. He was followed by Mamata Banerjee with 1.44 per cent and Mayawati with 0.43 per cent.

The main question asked in the poll was whom would the respondents prefer if the general election is held right now. When what is the biggest failure of Modi regime, 35.72 respondents said it was the BJP government’s failure to complete the Ram Mandir construction in Ayodhya. Nearly 29.5 per cent felt that the Modi government failed in creating employment opportunities as promised at the time of 2014 elections.

Rivals cry ‘Modi Go Back’ slogan: PM AP tour

0

Today’s PM Modi’s AP tour has raised much political heat. All other parties seized the opportunity to attack the BJP and score some political points on the demands for special status and other promises. Modi will address a public meeting at Guntur. Rivals gave out ‘Modi Go Back’ slogan and put up flexis everywhere.

The TDP, the Congress and the Left parties are observing it as a black day in the history of unjustly separated AP. The YCP and Jana Sena party are the only ones not using the occasion for their political advantage. While CM Naidu demanded BJP explanation on special status, Congress AP President Raghuveera Reddy took objection to the BJP’s indifference to the needs of AP state in its worst crisis.

PM public meeting is scheduled to be held at Etukur village near Guntur where the followers of BJP President Kanna Laxminarayana are present in large numbers. Actually, they are sympathisers of Pawan Kalyan party. Along caste lines, they support Kanna as well. Extra security measures are being taken for Modi tour because of prevailing mood among the AP special status protesters.

Modi talks in parliament about Congress snubbing NTR

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned late NTR’s political career in parliament. While countering the allegations of Congress that , Modi is snubbing regional political parties, Narendra Modi commented that it is the culture of Congress party to snub the regional political parties and asked Congress party to recall what they have done to NTR and MGR.

It is known news that current CM Chandrababu Naidu took over the TDP party from NTR couple of decades back. The incident is always referred as “backstabbing” by the political parties. But, it seems, Modi was referring to another such backstabbing to NTR by Nadendla bhaskara Rao. Nadendla bhaskara Rao took over the party and it’s MLAs on to his side in 1983 and became chief minister. He survived in that post for a month. There were rumours that it was the Congress party that gave Nadendla Bhaskar Rao all the backend support during that time. Modi indirectly mentioned this event as he said he knows what Congress has done to NTR and MGR.

Much before this event of Nadendla Bhaskar Rao taking over the power from NTR, Congress Party led by Indira Gandhi did something similar to MGR. In fact Indira Gandhi and MGR were allies earlier. After Indira Gandhi’s emergency period, Congress party lost miserably through out country and Janata Party came into power with thumping majority. Almost all the parties that allied with Indira Gandhi and Congress in that elections also bit the dust at ballot box. However, in Tamilnadu , the situation was different and MGR led ADMK party got good number of seats despite allying with Congress, thanks to the immense popularity of the matinee Idol. But , as Congress lost the power at the centre, MGR also dumped Congress during the next state elections and that angered Indira Gandhi. So, when she came back to power after the collapse of Janata Party, she fully remembered what MGR did to her and ,as revenge, she suspended the Tamil Nadu state government by imposing president rule there.

So, Modi was referring in the parliament, these two incidents to counter the allegations of Congress Party on him about snubbing the regional parties. To be frank, when Congress was at its peak, it was very aggressive in snubbing the regional parties, especially during Indira Gandhi tenure. However, it is also true that, after Indira Gandhi, it is only Modi, who can be compared at that level in demonstrating such dictatorial style of working.

‘Cinema chupista mama’: Lokesh tells Modi

1

AP CM’s son and Minister Nara Lokesh has launched a scathing attack on PM Modi ahead of general election. Lokesh says the TDP gave a foretaste of its power by spoiling the winning chances of the BJP in Karnataka elections last year. That was just a trial run but the actual power of TDP would be shown to the Modi-Duo in the coming election in AP. ‘We will show a big cinema to Modi. We will show him the power of AP people’, said CM’s son.

The TDP is making strong efforts to defeat the YCP-BJP secret alliance in AP. The party has placed special focus on how to win the Lok Sabha seats by fielding winning candidates. Lokesh says by winning all the 25 MP seats in the state, the TDP is going to decide who is going to be the next prime minister of India. For sure, Chandrababu Naidu will be playing a far bigger role than expected in national politics.

Lokesh has also attacked Jaganmohan Reddy for his collusion with Telangana CM KCR despite knowing the fact that the TRS chief described Andhras as ‘rakshasas’ (demons) who have no right to stay in Telangana state. The Federal Front of KCR and his friendship with Jagan are a big drama which is meant only to support the Modi-Shah duo.

C Voter survey: Most difficult election for Modi

0

Election surveys are one by one predicting a very difficult phase for PM Modi right now. C Voter survey on prevailing electoral climate across the country showed most tough election for Modi in his bid for PM post for a second consecutive time. The BJP and its allies will fall far below the simple majority. Moreover, the survey says Modi will not get enough majority to form the government even if there is support from KCR, Jaganmohan Reddy and Navin Patnaik.

Interestingly, the C Voter survey has also said the situation of the UPA allies is not improving either. The Congress and its allies will not reach the magic figure even after including the support of the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party. In all likelihood, it is going to be a hung Parliament where it is even difficult for either NDA or UPA to mobilise enough numbers to form the government.

The latest political situation has thrown up bigger challenges in front the nation. The C voter survey is giving just 233 MP seats to NDA and 167 to UPA. Other parties will get 143. This time, the BJP and its allies will get just 25 seats in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s largest and politically trendsetting state. The national surveys picked up speed after the rival parties formed clear alliances. The UP developments threw up unexpected challenges before NDA and UPA now.

Half of 10% EBS Reservations to go for Kapus

0

The entire country is surprised and dumbfound after PM Modi came out with his mantra of 10 per cent reservations for economically poorer sections in upper castes to capture middle class voters. AP CM Chandrababu Naidu came up with a counter to this move. Naidu has decided to allocate half of this 10 per cent for the Kapu voters while the remaining half will be meant for the other upper castes in AP.

Naidu’s gamble is clearly aimed at preventing the BJP to claim the whole credit for protecting the interests of middle class sections. With the latest move, the TDP chief has also brought to the fore once again the long pending demand for Kapu reservations. It is like hitting two birds at one shot. Naidu has addressed the Kapus’ demand while at the same time giving an effective counter to the BJP game plan.

As it is the election season, there are no counter reactions from the rival YCP and BJP parties on this. Jana Senani Pawan Kalyan will also be forced to follow a balance approach as it is relating to his favourite Kapu vote banks. The TDP leaders see the Kapu quota within 10 per cent as one of the best ideas that Naidu has brought ahead of elections.

Indian people will have a new PM soon, says CBN

1

AP CM Chandrababu Naidu accused the Modi government at the centre of playing dirty politics in the country to create problems for rival parties. In Karnataka, the BJP is unfairly destabilising the JDS-Congress alliance government and there are also efforts to remove the government by dubious means. Naidu says PM Modi has become thoroughly unpopular for all his anti-people policies and India will see a new prime minister in the coming election.

The anti-BJP Unity rally in Kolkata has brought about unprecedented unity among the rival parties. The leaders of various regional parties have given a call for eliminating the Modi government as it is bringing in all types of unhealthy trends in the country’s politics. Like never before, the Modi-Shah duo have targetted the rival political leaders by forcing the officials of CBI, IT and ED to conduct raids on premises of opposition leaders.

Chandrababu’s comments on new PM assumed significance as he carefully avoided mention of any specific name as the non-BJP parties’ prime ministerial candidate as an alternative to Modi. The only challenge for opposition is bringing unity on their PM candidate. Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee are major contenders for this but finally non-BJP parties may agree upon their PM candidate finally after the general election based on number of MP seats they win.

Modi’s mega plan: To divide and rule vote banks

1

The Modi government at the Centre is busy making strategies to bring in novel programmes and win over new vote banks ahead of the coming general election. By talking about 10 per cent reservation for economically poorer sections in upper castes, Modi has targetted the middle class and lower middle class sections. He is also setting sights on the caste vote banks. Towards this, categorisation of OBCs is being actively considered.

As per reports, the Election Commission of India is expected to announce election notification in March first week. There are just a few weeks left for the Modi government to come out with new programmes. It is actively considering Rythu Bandhu programme which will be aimed at paying compensation to farmers for crop failures. This is being pursued by political parties for money transfers directly to beneficiaries.

PM Modi is giving special attention to financial assistance to farmers at the rate of Rs. 15,000 per hectare. This is because majority of farmers across the country own land holdings around one hectare. The BJP is aiming at splitting regional parties as well in order to divide their vote banks.

Modi jealous of Andhra Pradesh: Chandrababu Naidu

0

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was jealous of Andhra Pradesh and hence was behind the proposed Federal Front of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao.

Reacting to the meeting of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leaders with YSR Congress Party President Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy to discuss the proposed front, Naidu said that “jealous people were coming together under a conspiracy against Andhra Pradesh”.

During a teleconference with leaders of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), he said Modi was jealous of his state as it was making rapid progress.

According to TDP sources, the TDP chief said Modi was afraid that the southern state might overtake Gujarat in development.

He alleged that TRS President Chandrashekhar Rao was also against Andhra Pradesh’s development and afraid of his own inefficiency while Jaganmohan Reddy was scared that he might have to go to jail in corruption cases.

Claiming that KCR’s Federal Front was not getting a response from any party, he said this was the reason his son K.T. Rama Rao met Jagan in a hurry.

“With this meeting the nexus between them is exposed,” said Naidu, who was trying to play anchor to an anti-BJP front at the national level.

Naidu also remarked that the three parties were attacking Andhra Pradesh like vultures. He alleged that they were trying to create a rift among various communities and castes in his state.

The TDP chief alleged that the Federal Front was aimed at implementing the Bharatiya Janata Party’s agenda. He said the BJP was trying to ensure that the parties against it do not unite.

“It wants to create confusion among people. It wants to split anti-BJP votes,” he said.

KCR’s son Rama Rao, who is also the Working President of the TRS, met Jagan in Hyderabad on Wednesday to discuss the Federal Front proposed as an alternative to both the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

KCR plans to visit Andhra Pradesh soon for further talks with Jagan, whose YSR Congress is the main opposition party in Andhra Pradesh.

BJP leaders hit back at rivals’ attacks on Modi’s rule

0

Since the TDP turned against the BJP at the national level, nearly 17 political parties have begun coming together to oppose PM Modi’s rule at the Centre. AP CM Chandrababu Naidu is openly criticising Modi at every given opportunity even as DMK leader Stalin has also expressed clearly his party’s opposition to the Modi rule at a meeting in Chennai.

In the face of aggressive attacks, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley defended Modi saying that just like nobody could defeat Indian Captain Virat Kohli, it would be impossible for any rival party to counter Modi. Jaitley went on to say that Captain Kohli would lead the Indian team to victory in 2019 world cup while the same year would see PM Modi defeating the rivals and becoming PM again.

Another senior leader of BJP Ram Madhav went all the way to Chennai where he countered rivals’ attacks on Modi. He told the rivals that the PM’s post is not vacant for the next 10 years and the opposition parties were only criticising Modi in order to bring about unity in their groups. How can Stalin say that Modi is a fascist when he himself got the name of Soviet dictator Stalin? asked Ram Madhav.
Referring to Stalin’s comments, Ram Madhav said Rahul Gandhi is not the only leader for opposition parties to be projected as the PM candidate but there is one more leader who wants to run for this post. BJP is trying hard to project that the opposition parties are not able to show a single mutually agreeable PM candidate from them to counter Modi.

Modi to address public meeting near Mangalagiri

0

The BJP leaders have finalised the venue for the prestigious public meeting to be addressed by PM Modi in AP on January 6. The venue is Bible Mission Grounds opposite the Acharya Nagarjuna University near Mangalagiri in Guntur district. BJP National President Amit Shah has taken this decision in consultation with the state leaders.

The venue is finalised as BJP State President Kanna Laxminarayana has taken it as a personal challenge to make Modi’s meet a grand success in his home district of Guntur. Nearly 5 lakh people are being mobilised from all over the state for the Modi meet. This is the first of the two meetings Modi is to address in AP in the next two to three months to explain to the people the steps taken by Centre for welfare of AP people.

Considering the differences between BJP and TDP, Modi is going to use the public meeting as a platform to counter the Chandrababu Naidu criticism on injustice done to AP in the reorganization promises. Naidu has stepped up pressure on the BJP on the issue of special status and funds to Polavaram project and also the Amaravati capital city project.

Modi’s meeting will raise political temperature in AP as TDP leaders are making unsparing criticism of the BJP government and supporting the Congress party.

Vijay Mallya to be extradited to India

0

Vijay Mallya, wanted in India on charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to around Rs 9,000 crore, has been extradited by the the Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London. Vijay Mallya’s extradition is seen as a major boost to the Modi government ahead of general elections next year.

It is known news that Vijay Mallya left India in 2016 after a consortium of banks got together to start legal proceedings to recover the loans. He has been living in a mansion near London since. India has been trying to bring him back and proceed with legal action. Today UK court gave key verdict in this case. A team led by CBI JD Sai Manohar attended the Westminster Magistrate’s Court regarding this case. Before the judgement, Vijay Mallya told to media that his legal team will reveal the whatever judgement is pronounced and will take proper steps thereafter. Finally Westminster Magistrates’ Court Chief Magistrate Judge Emma Arbuthnot rules that Mr. Mallya can be extradited to India to stand trial on the charges brought by the CBI and ED.

Authorities at the Arthur Road prison in Mumbai have kept a high security cell ready for Mr. Mallya already.

Chandrababu Naidu, Jagan afraid of Modi, says Pawan Kalyan

0

Jana Senani Pawan Kalyan has made his party’s intentions clear to attack the TDP and the YSR Congress Party in an aggressive manner. He called both the parties corrupt and AP CM Chandrababu Naidu and Opposition leader Jaganmohan Reddy were greatly afraid of Prime Minister Modi for their own reasons. He asserted Jana Sena is the only party that has no need to fear any other party as it believes in service, trust and discipline.

Pawan Kalyan, during his Anantapur tour, made a specific attack on Naidu saying AP CM became like a ‘Dhritharashtra’ and he started promoting his son Nara Lokesh in everything. In the coming weeks, Jana Sena will step up its activities to expose the TDP government and it is Jana Sena which is going to form the next government by defeating CBN, said Pawan. He is very critical of the manner in which the TDP leaders have tried to misuse their power in every possible without bothering to ensure a clean, transparent governance.

Pawan Kalyan has also made a scathing attack on Jagan, saying he has badly failed to fulfill his duty as Opposition leader and failed to prevent the ruling party from continuing its excesses. Jana Senani said the YCP leader was obviously afraid of PM Modi because of his illegal assets cases. In the last few weeks, Pawan has been slowly increasing his attack on rival parties in AP. Political circles suspect Jana Senani is sending a message to his fans and followers in Telangana by suggesting a direction to them. His unsparing attacks are indicating Jana Sena’s mood not to support TDP and YCP allies.

KCR betrayed Telangana, Modi betrayed India: CBN

0

AP CM and TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu is making a whirlwind tour of Hyderabad city to campaign for candidates of Prajakutami alliance. He is making a bitter attack on the TRS and the BJP, saying while Chandrasekhara Rao betrayed Telangana people, Prime Minister Modi betrayed India as a whole. CBN accused KCR and Modi of resorting to politics of collusion and betrayal which will be rejected by the people in the election.

CBN deplored the TRS government has done nothing to protect and maintain development that the earlier TDP government has brought in Hyderabad city. He reminded under his regime, the wealth of the twin cities had gone up by leaps and bounds but now the situation has become pitiful. CBN asserted he played instrumental role in laying the 165-km long Outer Ring Road, in bringing Metro Rail services and also implementing Vision document for greater development.

CBN gave a call to defeat the BJP and the TRS candidates, saying the TDP has tied up with the Congress party setting aside 37 long years of intense rivalry and this is done solely in the larger interests of the Indian people. The Prajakutami candidates are heavily banking on CBN election meetings and road shows in Hyderabad city considering his huge following and image here.

As the architect of HiTech City and Cyberabad, Naidu is still popular among the urban residents in twin cities which is one reason the allies are making sure he covers maximum number of road shows. CBN has expressed confidence their alliance will win all the assembly segments in the city limits

How are you affected by my beliefs, KCR asks Modi

0

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao on Tuesday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi how he was affected by his beliefs.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief responded to Modi’s comments made at an election rally in Nizamabad earlier in the day that he (Rao) was so insecure that he relied on astrologer, ‘pooja paath’ and ‘nimbu mirchi’.

“How are you affected by my beliefs? What is your loss if I perform poojas? I will perform 10 yagnams a year. Did I ever trouble you?” asked Rao at an election rally in Mahabubnagar.

“I offer food and ‘teertham’ (holy water) to those believers who attend my yagnams. If you are also a believer, come, attend my yagnam and take holy water. I am a believer. I believe in God. What is your worry?” asked KCR, as Rao is popularly known.

The TRS leader also slammed Modi over his opposition to reservation for Muslims saying he (Modi) was afflicted with Hindu-Muslim disease.

KCR said since the population of Muslims had gone up to 12 percent in Telangana, his government sent a resolution to the Centre to hike the quota from 4 percent to 12 percent.

Exuding confidence that TRS will return to power in Telangana by winning over 100 seats in he 119-member Assembly, KCR urged people to ensure that TRS won all 17 Lok Sabha seats in the next election.

“A non-BJP and non-Congress government will come to power at the Centre. This government will follow people’s agenda, fulfil their aspirations and understand their emotions,” said KCR.

The TRS chief defended friendship with Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM). He said both TRS and MIM were ‘pucca’ local parties.

He claimed that it was MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi who alerted him about the conspiracy being hatched in Delhi to topple his government and extended the support of his party to foil the designs of the BJP and TDP to impose President’s rule.

KCR challenges Modi for a joint visit to Nizamabad

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao on Tuesday challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a joint visit to Nizamabad to find out if people are facing electricity and water problems as alleged by him.

Reacting to Modi’s remark at an election rally in Nizamabad that people in the town lack basic amenities, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief dared him to come with him for a visit.

KCR termed as the “biggest lie” Modi’s claim that people of Nizamabad are facing electricity problem. He also remarked that he had never seen such an “ignorant” Prime Minister.

“You are Prime Minister of the country. How can you talk like this?” asked TRS chief while pointing out that Electricity Authority of India has ranked Telangana number one in per capita power consumption in the country.

Addressing election rallies in Mahabubnagar district, KCR claimed that Telangana is the only state supplying uninterrupted round-the-clock free power to farmers. “Even the BJP-ruled states are not doing this,” he said.

KCR’s daughter and Nizamabad MP K. Kavita also reacted sharply to Modi’s speech. “Let him come for a field visit. I wonder if PM is able to do in his constituency Varanasi what we have achieved here,” she said.

Modi in his speech poked fun at KCR’s promise to turn Nizamabad into London. “While coming here I asked pilot (of the chopper) to take a round to see if he has done this. I found that towns in states with relatively weak economy are better than Nizamabad,” he said.

Modi was on a visit to Telangana to campaign for BJP for December 7 elections to Telangana Assembly.

Prof.K.Nageshwar: Two Years after Demonetisation : How Modi’s Claims proved to be Farcical

0

The demonetisation was the biggest economic policy measure of Narendra Modi government. Big hopes were created in the minds of people that economy will have innumerable benefits due to this far reaching policy measure, prominent among them is the unearthing of black money. However, the government and its economic apologetics soon changed the goal posts and claimed that demonetisation is for driving the nation towards cash less economy. The government’s argument was that corruption and all the other economic malaises were the result of high incidence of cash in the economy. Of course yet another claim was that demonetisation will increase tax compliance resulting in the generation of less and less black money as the illicit wealth and income holders will be scared to hide their income. What is the experience after two years of demonetisation?

The RBI data reveals that over 99 percent of demonetised currency has actually came back to the banks indicating a process of black money converted into white, thanks to demonetisation. The government in an affidavit to Supreme Court estimated that at least three lakh cores of black money will not return to the banking system. The reality is that hardly ten thousand cores have not returned indicating that demonetisation is an exercise in money laundering.

The protagonists of demonetisation argued that it helped to reduce the cash in circulation in the economy. Look at the following statistics culled out from official reports like the Annual Reports of the Reserve bank of India (RBI).

Cash to GDP ratio in India was 12.2 percent in 2015-16. It declined to 8.8 percent in 2016-17 post demonetisation. It again rose to 10.9 percent in 2017-18 and in June 2018, it further increased to 11.30 percent of GDP. The rising trend indicates that it is expected to be over 12 percent by the end of this financial year, the level at which the cash per GDP ratio stood prior to demonetisation. Currency circulation on November, 4, 2016 stood at 17.98 lakh crores. It declined to 8.98 lakh crore in January 6, 2017 as 86 percent of the then cash in circulation was taken out due to demonetisation. But, the cash in circulation in India increased to 19.68 lakh crore in October, 19, 2018, much above the level reported at the time of demonetisation.

The claim that high incidence of Cash in the economy necessarily increases corruption is fallacious if one looks at the international experience.

Cash to GDP ratio in Nigeria is 1.85 percent, India over 11 percent, Japan 19.4 percent, Singapore is around 10 percent. Should we conclude that Nigeria is less corrupt nation compared to India or Japan is more corrupt nation than India or Nigeria?

The afterthought of the ruling dispensation is that Taxes increased due to demonetisation. But look at the statistics from official sources to understand the political economy of taxation and demonetisation.

Direct Tax to GDP ratio was 5.81 percent in 2010-11 and increased to 5.98 percent in 2017-18. Direct tax collections stood at over 10 lakh crores in 2017-18 which is 18 percent higher than the previous year. But, direct taxes as proportion of total taxes remained at 52.29 percent which is below compared to 2014

But, indirect taxes to GDP increased from 4.48 percent in 2010-11 to 5.46 percent in 2017-18. Total Tax to GDP ratio was 11.3 percent in 2010-11 and increased to mere 11.44 percent in 2017-18. This shows that the overall taxes have not registered any major change. In fact the direct taxes whose evasion leads to the generation of black money rose much less compared to indirect taxes paid by common man for consuming the goods and services.

In fact, Corporate tax to GDP ratio fell from 3.89 percent in 2010-11 to 3.40 in 2017-18

On the other hand, Personal Income Tax rose from 1.9 percent in 2010-11 to 2.5 percent in 2017-18. 1.26 crore more taxpayers have been added in 2016-17. This is about 26% higher than the number of taxpayers added in 2015-16, when 99.98 lakh new taxpayers were added. The number of new taxpayers added in 2015-16 was also about 27.5% higher than that in 2014-15, when 78.37 lakh new taxpayers were added. The Economic Survey 2016-17 has shown that the average income reported by the new individual taxpayers added in 2016-17 was Rs 2.7 lakh.

The broad conclusions that can be drawn from these figures are as follows. There is no increase in the levels of tax collections due to demonetisation. Tax compliance has increased only in the case of salaried individuals who come under personal income tax regime. The corporates who are the main culprits in the generation of black money did not show any significant tax compliance and in fact their share has come down .

CBN gives another blow to PM Modi: AP blacklists CBI

2

The ongoing stand-off between AP CM N. Chandrababu Naidu and Prime Minister Modi is all set to be escalated further with the latest decision of the TDP chief. The AP government has withdrawn the ‘General Consent’ given to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct probes in any case on request from the State. In the absence of this permission, the CBI cannot interfere with any case that takes place within the limits of AP any more.

The AP government cited lack of confidence in the CBI after its officials got exposed in recent scams. AP will no more rely on the the resources of the central institution for additional investigations in unresolved cases. The government has issued order withdrawing notification given in the past with regard to the general consent.

With the latest decision, the CBI cannot conduct raids any more in AP and its functions would now have to be carried out by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of AP within AP limits. This gives ACB enough powers to conduct raids and searches on Central government departments and institutions located in AP if there are any suspicions.

The AP Police have decided to file cases and carry out raids on Central government officials and offices if they were found involved in politically motivated raids against AP ministers and leaders in the state. With the support provided by the government, the AP Police are strengthening the ACB as well enabling it to gather resources to conduct raids if needed on Central government officials.
