Superstar Rajinikanth on Friday said he extends his full support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ movement, adding that “cleanliness is godliness”.

“I extend my full support to our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modiji’s Swachhata Hi Seva mission. Cleanliness is godliness,” Rajinikanth tweeted.

Earlier this week, Modi had written personalised letters to celebrities, industrialists and noted personalities to enlist their support for the initiative.

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, Modi said Swachhata is for each of us to practice.

He also said the days leading up to Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 be about “encouraging widespread participation in cleanliness initiatives across the country.”

Rajinikanth’s ‘Baasha’ to be screened at Fantastic Film Fest

Superstar Rajinikanths Tamil blockbuster “Baasha”, in which he played an auto-rickshaw driver and a don, will be screened at the 12th edition of the Fantastic Film Festival, it was announced on Monday.

The digitally remastered version of “Baasha” will be screened at the fest.

Fantastic Fest is the largest genre film festival in the US, specializing in horror, fantasy, sci-fi, action and just plain fantastic movies from all around the world.

At the fest, some popular Indian films have been screened over the years.

Last year, Kamal Haasan’s Tamil thriller “Aalavandhan” was screened and it was received extremely well.

According to a statement, “Baasha” will be screened at the fest on September 24 and September 26.

This year the fest will take place between September 21-28.

“Baasha”, directed by Suresh Krishna, is one of the biggest hits of Rajinikanth’s career.

Will join Rajinikanth if he enters politics: Kamal Haasan

Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan, amidst news that he is planning to launch his own party, has said he would be willing to join hands with superstar Rajinikanth if he takes the political plunge.

“Rajini and I have been discussing professional matters. If he joins politics, it won’t be difficult for us to discuss politics. I will join him provided he enters politics. We have been rivals on the professional front, but we always consult over key issues,” Haasan said on Friday, while addressing questions on video by a leading Tamil daily.

Asked if he has decided a date to launch his party, he said: “It should be decided without any hurry.”

Haasan added that the day he plans to announce his party, it may “coincide with a revolution”.

Over the last few months, Haasan has been very vocal about the current state of politics in Tamil Nadu.

Haasan has been dropping hints about taking the political plunge.

Earlier this month, Haasan had held talks with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and had told reporters that they had also discussed the state of politics in Tamil Nadu.

He also clarified that his colour is definitely not saffron when asked about his plans for any political affiliation.

Soundarya Rajinikanth, who is unsure about her father superstar Rajinikanth’s entry into politics, says he will decide when it’s time.

Over the last few months, Rajinikanth has on several occasions hinted at an imminent political plunge. However, he didn’t give himself a deadline yet.

Prodded about the superstar’s rumoured entry into politics, Soundarya told IANS here: “I think I’ll just say what dad had said in the fans meet. When it’s time for war, he will get in the battlefield.”

In May this year, while addressing a large gathering of his fans, Rajinikanth made it clear that it’s not quite the time yet for his political entry.

“I have my profession, my job. I have some responsibilities and you have your jobs. Go back to your respective places and do your job. Let’s meet when it’s time for the war,” Rajinikanth had said amidst thunderous applause from fans.

At the same event, he had also said: “If it’s God’s will, I will join politics.”

However, he clarified his support is for no party or individual.

He demanded that the system be “changed”.

AR Murugadoss to direct Superstar

2.0 Telugu rights snapped for a Massive Price

Sensational director Shankar is making news with the sequel of Robo, which has been titled 2.0. Superstar Rajinikanth is the lead actor in the movie and the entire shoot of the film has been wrapped. Shankar wanted ample time to wrap up the post-production work as the movie has enough dose of VFX work. 2.0 is said to be the costliest ever film made in Indian cinema and the makers spent Rs 400 crores on the movie. The film too has been carrying huge expectations and has been slated for early next year release.

The makers have been quoting Rs 80 crores for the Telugu theatrical rights across AP and Telangana alone. Producer Sai Korrapati has been leading the race however the update says that the deal has been closed. Top distribution house Global Cinemas along with Lyca Productions will release the film across AP and Telangana. The makers have not disclosed the exact price of the deal. AR Rahman is the music composer and Lyca Productions are bankrolling this prestigious project. Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar is the lead antagonist and Amy Jackson is the heroine.

Shankar in plans to wrap 2.0 with a song

AA Films, the noted Bollywood distribution firm owed by Anil Thadani, which hit a goldmine by distributing Baahubali 2’s Hindi version, has now acquired the Hindi rights of Spyder, as per a leading national media house. It may be noted that the same firm had earlier came on board to distribute ‘2.0’ across North India.

For the unknown, Anil Thadani of AA Films is a business partner and close friend of Karan Johar, which itself is an explanation enough for his interest in South biggies. Karan Johar’s brand image and acumen in promoting films, coupled with Thadani’s grip on distribution side, will surely help the aforementioned Bollywood biggies in having a wider release as well as grabbing attention of Bollywood folks.

A selfie video featuring superstar Rajinikanth, who is currently holidaying in the US, has gone viral on social media.

In the video, Rajinikanth is seen self-recording and it is quite evident that it’s his first time as he innocently asks his driver: “Is the red button on?”

Rajinikanth urges TN government for positive outcome on tax row

As theatres across Tamil Nadu remained shut for the third day in a row on Wednesday over double taxation, Abirami Ramanathan, President of Tamil Nadu Film Chamber of Commerce, said a positive outcome can be expected soon from the ongoing protest. Even megastar Rajinikanth urged the government to consider the plea.

Ramanathan said: “The government has listened to all our demands. We are hopeful of a positive outcome. Theatres should operate from tomorrow or Friday.

Megastar Rajinikanth also urged the state government to take a decision for the industry’s benefit by doing away with the additional 30 per cent entertainment tax that it is levying over and above the GST rate of 28 per cent.

“Keeping in mind the livelihood of lakhs of people in the Tamil film industry, I sincerely request the Tamil Nadu government to seriously consider our plea,” Rajinikanth tweeted on Wednesday.

Veteran Kamal Haasan, who had expressed his views on the issue earlier this week, thanked Rajinikanth for his appeal.

“Thanks Rajni avaragaLay for voicing your concern. Let’s request first as gentlemen should. Then we shall see,” Kamal tweeted.

Earlier, he had said: “Filmmaking in the state has been made difficult deliberately. There are further tortures and systemic corruption that the film industry has to endure under this regime.”

Kamal had also pointed out that neighbouring southern states have not levied additional tax on cinema over and above the GST.

“In Kerala, the film industry requested Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and he, through his Finance Minister, quickly announced that Kerala will not be levying any more taxes on the already beleaguered film business,” he said.

“Karnataka has gone even further to facilitate the well-being of the film industry. Telangana and Andhra are also doing their best for their film industries,” he added.

‘2.o’ team hopes India has more 3D screens for film’s release

The team of megastar Rajinikanth’s upcoming Tamil science-fiction action drama “2.o” is hopeful of converting as many screens as possible into 3D for the release of the film, says Raju Mahalingam, creative head of Lyca Productions.

“2.o”, a sequel to Rajinikanth’s 2010 Tamil blockbuster “Enthiran”, has been completely shot in 3D.

Talking about the need to have more 3D screens, Mahalingam told reporters here on Wednesday: “The film has been shot in 3D, and on a budget of Rs 400 crore. As of now we have only 1500 3D screens in India as opposed to over 10,000 in China. We hope to have more screens converted into 3D and ready for the release of ‘2.o’.”

“We have already initiated talks with Chinese distributors. We are planning big release in China as well,” he said.

Well-known distributor Tirupur Subramaniam said Tamil Nadu will have more 3D screens ready for the release of “2.o”.

“Theatre owners are kicked about ‘2.o’. We hope to have over 300 screens converted into 3D for the release of the film. As a Tamilian, I really wish the film does more business than ‘Baahubali 2’,” Subramaniam said.

Slated for release next year, “2.o” is directed by Shankar, who has teamed up with Rajinikanth for the third time.

The film, which will be released in Telugu and Hindi, also stars Akshay Kumar as the antagonist, Amy Jackson, Sudhanshu Pandey and Adil Hussain.

Mahalingam also confirmed that Lyca Productions won’t take up new projects until there’s clarity on the tax situation in Tamil Nadu.

Rajinikanth to undergo medical checkup in US

Superstar Rajinikanth has left for the US for a medical checkup, a source said.

“Rajini sir left to the US with his daughter Aishwarya last night (Wednesday). He has gone for a regular medical checkup. They will be back in mid-July,” a source close to the actor told IANS.

The source clarified that Rajinikanth is “absolutely fine”.

Will inform when I decide: Rajinikanth on political entry

Superstar Rajinikanth, who is rumoured to be planning a political entry soon, said he has been in discussions with political leaders and will announce when things are finalised.

However, he didn’t clarify the purpose and nature of his meetings with political leaders.

“My kids are really happy for me and so is my family. They are thrilled that I’m part of this project. I really can’t talk about my role. All I can say is that I’m excited about this opportunity,” Eswari told IANS.

In the film, being directed by Pa. Ranjith, she is rumoured to be paired with Rajinikanth.

Popular for playing character roles in Telugu cinema, this is her first time collaboration with the superstar.

Having completed its Mumbai schedule, the shoot will next commence in the city soon.
