Officer Review : RGV disappoints yet again !

Nagarjuna Officer Movie Review

Telugu360 Rating : 2.5/5

After a series of encounters by ruthless Mumbai officer Narayan Pasari, court orders a special investigation to fact finding. A Hyderabad cadre IPS officer Shivaji Rao (Nagarjuna) assigned to investigate the allegations on Narayan Pasari. Narayan Pasari is a dubious officer. On one hand he is solely responsible for eradication of Mumbai Mafia, on other hand he encourages contract killings under the guise of encounters.

Shivaji Rao takes on Narayan Pasari, rest of the film is how they try to outsmart each other.

Performances:

Nagarjuna as an IPS Officer shivajirao is good. Even at his age, looked physically so much fit in the role. Performance wise also he has done good job. Myra Sareen who acted as a lady officer played a glamorous role, she is okay. The girl who acted as Nag’s daughter, Baby Kaavya, is cute and acted well. The actor who played Narayan Pasari performed very good.

Analysis:

When news came out Nagarjuna, Ram Gopal varma are re-uniting after 25 years, obviously expectations went high for ‘Officer ‘film. However, after the teaser was released, the same expectations are earthed. The first half of the film is somewhat okay. It offers some variety in terms of story. Though the subject, as typical of RGV films, deals with mafia & police, this time departmental investigation on a bad cop brings in some interest aspect initially. However, soon it evaporates with pointless story and direction in second half. Too much violence at times, weird sound design, and weird camera angles test patience.

While Narayana Pasari characterization is interesting in first half, director could not explain the rationale behind his extreme behaviour. Once pasari released scot free in departmental inquiry, he running a mafia gang doesn’t make any sense. Then onwards, the special investigative squad formed by him operates as a mafia gang and chase Nagarjuna’s police squad. Here the story turns very routine crime drama. The smart writing which used to be in Ram Gopal Varma films is a bigtime missing. There is ample scope to insert brilliant scenes as double agents, cross intelligence etc. are involved in story. But he failed to do so. Because of poor production values, the cinematic experience is missing especially with its 1 hour 55 minutes short duration. There are two songs, both are situationally good enough.

Rahul penumatsa cinematography is weird with its crazy angles at times. Biswas’s sound design is good.

Positives:

  • Nagarajuna Role
  • A different story line in first half

Negatives:

  • Poor characterizations
  • Low production values
  • Boring second half
  • Excessive violence

Verdict:

Officer is another disappointing film from Ram Gopal Varma. He couldn’t utilize the comeback opportunity provided by Nagarjuna. With an average first half and poor second half, the officer movie is a disappointing one

Violence in ‘Officer’ is raw, real: Ram Gopal Varma

0

Ram Gopal Varma’s actioner “Officer” is yet to get the censor nod although the film is just days away from release. Reason? The violent content. But the filmmaker says the violence in “Officer” is raw and real.

Apparently, there are scenes of graphic violence in the film which have the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) flummoxed. Though Varma is more than willing to take an ‘Adult’ certificate, the CBFC is yet in two minds about letting some of the violence go scot-free.

Varma doesn’t deny the violent content in “Officer”.

“It is a film about the violent society we live in and one man’s struggle to bring a semblance of sanity in the lives of common citizens. The violence in ‘Officer’ is raw and real,” he said.

“You can’t show the reaction until you spotlight the action. The violence here is not gratuitous. It will make the audience uncomfortable, as any form of violence is supposed to,” he added.

‘Officer’ trade : Face Saving efforts by team

Akkineni Nagarjuna’s upcoming cop drama Officer is carrying very low buzz among audience and trade circles because of the poor track record of its director Ram Gopal Varma. The trailers and teasers couldn’t create any hype either because of their monotonous appeal.

The pre release business is also very underwhelming in all areas. Initially, a noted distributor came forward to release the film. But, he backed out after the release of the first teaser of the film.

In order to save face and generate some buzz around the film, the team is trying their best by promoting that the theatrical rights have been sold for a fancy price in various areas of Andhra. But, truth is that no distributor has come forward to release the film on own. All areas are going to be released on advance basis or through own release.

The expectations are very low even among Nagarjuna fans. It needs a miracle from RGV to deliver a decent film given the form he is in at present.

Produced by Sudheer Chandra, the film is inspired by a real-life story.

Ram Gopal Varma police complaint on Jaya Kumar

0

RGV gave police complaint on Jaya Kumar for morphing his photos and sharing those obscene photos in social media. Punjagutta police have registered the case.

It is known news that RGV has a row with P. Jaya Kumar, writer who assisted RGV for Sarkar-3. Jaya Kumar even allegated GST movie was based on his script. (https://www.telugu360.com/t360-exclusive-rgv-accused-plagiarizing-gst-script/). Recently also Jaya Kumar alleged “Officer” story is also based on his script. He even tweeted to Nagarjuna on this asked him to intervene and do justice.

Now, RGV complained to Police on Jaya Kumar and RGV alleged that Jayakumar morphed his photos and naked body of a female with RGV head and posted it on the internet. RGV himself is a news maker and controversy lover but it seems this Jaya Kumar is also following the footsteps of his Guru, RGV.

Police have registered the case and probing into the issue.

Freedom of expression also means the right to offend: RGV

Director Ram Gopal Varma’s upcoming film Officer is quite important for many reasons. To start off, it brings the director back together with Nagarjuna with whom he has given some memorable hits in the past, the most celebrated of which is definitely Siva that is considered a cult classic in Telugu cinema till date. The film also marked a new page for Nagarjuna who had finally arrived as a name of his own with Siva. Now, as they team up again in a flick that sees Nagarjuna as a cop, in an exclusive interview, RGV opens up about the film and of course other issues that have been keeping him in the news lately. Excerpts:

Cop dramas and Ram Gopal Varma have had quite a history. What novelty will Officer offer to the audience in that regard? How different will this be from any of the films you have done in the past?

The uniqueness of Officer is that instead of on a criminal, Nag will actually be investigating a cop. He is the chief of a special investigation team constituted by the Mumbai High Court. Whenever there’s an enquiry on any high-profile cop they always bring in an officer from out of the state so that the enquiry will be impartial. So, Nag plays a Hyderabad cop who’s investigating a Mumbai cop.

You tweeted earlier today that you shot the most violent physical fights ever for Officer. Could you tell us what went into filming this particular sequence?

Lately, most films are resorting to high-speed ramping and very unrealistic stunts whereas in Officer I tried to keep the fights really natural and realistic.

You teamed up with Nagarjuna after a very long time in the capacity of director-actor. How different was that experience in comparison to your past projects together?

I think both of us have matured both as people and as film enthusiasts and that will definitely show in the film as it’s a combined effort from both of us.

What has changed about him (Nag) over the years, both as an actor and as an individual?

I think he’s grown as an actor tremendously and he has also become very calm internally which is showing in his glowing personality.

Was there any real life incident or person that inspired the film’s storyline?

It’s based on two existing real life characters but I can’t take their names

Nagarjuna has played a cop in the past and most of the times excelled. Could you point to us a quality in him that makes him perfect for the avatar?

I think it’s his sternness and his intensity and his larger than life dignity.

What will his role in the film be like?

He plays the father of a 12-year-old girl. He has no love track in the film.

On another note, the film comes just around the time when Pawan Kalyan and his fans seem to see you as a bone of contention. And the common junta assumes this doesn’t mean well for your film. But as a filmmaker, do you think such issues have the capacity to influence the outcome of a film?

A film works on its own merits and no extraneous factors can really influence it.

And even though you say you tweet only for entertainment and to harm no one, would it not be fair to consider a possibility of that happening sometimes, maybe even unknown to you?

Freedom of expression also means the right to offend. Because if no one is offended there’s no need for freedom. Everyone, no matter who, whatever they say, will offend someone or the other. That’s being a part of the free world.

Do you think it was fair that the issue (that Sri Reddy raised initially) moved to completely another tangent from its original course soon after the involvement of Pawan Kalyan?

These things cannot be planned by anyone. They all owe it to the butterfly effect.

Lastly, a Civil Service ranker Y. Akshay Kumar met you recently and seemed to be taken in by you as a person. You seemed curious to meet him too. Was there something interesting that came out of the meeting?

What’s interesting was that a Civils Services topper got influenced by a failed civil engineer.

RGV ready to work with Sri Reddy

0

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, whose “Officer” is coming up for release in May, may find his release plans road-blocked by film associations in Andhra Pradesh which have taken offence to his unabashed support and endorsement of actress Sri Reddy’s protests against casting couch. He says he’s ready to direct her if there’s a suitable role.

“Of course I will work with her if there’s a role for her,” Varma said.

Varma denies all apprehensions of a boycott of his film, saying: “That’s all social media gossip. There’s no person in the Telugu film industry or any organisation within the Telugu film industry which has said that I should be boycotted. On the contrary, they are forming committees to address the issues brought forward by her.”

He feels Reddy’s protests have paid off.

“They already are in the process of forming committees that she demanded. One of them being CASH (Committee Against Sexual Harassment) to address sexual harassment. They put a ban on her some 15 days back and two days later they cancelled it and apologised to her,” said Varma.

Reddy created a sensation by resorting to strip protest against casting couch in the Telugu film industry in front of the office of Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce here earlier this month.

Will Nag’s Officer release in May ?

0

Akkineni Nagarjuna teamed up with director Ram Gopal Varma for a cop drama titled as Officer. The shoot has been wrapped up and the makers have already announced that the film will hit the screens on May 24th. But, the latest developments in film industry put doubts on the release date.

It is well known that Ram Gopal Varma is facing flak from all quarters for instigating controversial actress Sri Reddy to slander Pawan Kalyan. This has led to huge criticism on RGV from both industry bigwigs and audience. Also, there are numerous debates on action to be taken on RGV for his despicable act towards industry.

Amidst all this, speculations are thick and fast that Officer might be postponed until this controversial calms down a bit.

Many top personalities from industry have slammed RGV and proposed for a strict action against him. Nagarjuna is yet to respond on the issue. He is maintaining stoic silence over the controversy. Recently, the teaser of Officer has been launched. But, after the RGV controversy, there is hardly anything heard about the film. There are no updates about the film’s release as well.

So, will Nag have the courage to release the film amidst all these controversies ? or will he postpone it ?

YSRCP is behind Sri Reddy & Ram Gopal Varma – Bonda Uma

0

TDP minister Bonda Uma reacted on the ongoing row involving Pawan Kalyan, Sri Reddy, and Ram Gopal Varma. Talking to the press in a specially convened meeting in Vijayawada, the TDP MLA tried to make sure that TDP and Nara Lokesh is well defended.

He said, ‘one should be able to furnish convincible evidence when they make allegations against anyone. Pawan Kalyan is alleging that Nara Lokesh is behind Sir Reddy and RGV. What evidence does he have?

YSRCP is behind Sri Reddy and Ram Gopal Varma. It is really unfortunate to drag Nara Lokesh name into this episode.

While our CM CBN is doing ‘Dharma Deeksha’, people have been conspiring against him sitting in Telangana. They wanted to create troubles for TDP. Did they even question Modi and Centre on SCS and the commitments in the AP Reorganization act?’

Meanwhile, Pawan Kalyan has come with few more interesting tweets regarding Srinivasa Raju Chalapathi’s donations to TDP party during the 2009-2010 Fiscal Year.

Will Nag go ahead with Akhil – RGV film ?

0

Controversial director Ram Gopal Varma admitted that he has orchestrated the whole disparaging episode of Sri Reddy who cast aspersions on Pawan Kalyan. The repulsive act of RGV is drawing huge criticism from all quarters since today morning.

There have been numerous demands from several big wigs to ban RGV and his films for his contemptible attitude towards Telugu film industry.

Meanwhile, everyone in industry is wondering how a star actor like Nagarjuna agreed to work with RGV for ‘Officer’ as he is constantly making headlines for all wrong reasons.

Surprisingly, Nag also green signalled a project under RGV – Akhil combination which is supposed to take off later. There have been numerous doubts on whether this project will materialise or not.

Now, with RGV bearing the brunt of the entire Sri Reddy issue, Nagarjuna might not want to fraught with risk and allow Akhil to team up with the controversial director.

RGV condemns news of making Sridevi biopic

0

Sridevi’s untimely death shocked entire nation. Ram Gopal Varma, who never hesitates to show his adulation for her in public, wrote a “love letter” and shocked many by revealing sensitive information about her personal life. Ever since that letter was published, rumors started doing rounds about RGV making biopic on Sridevi’s life. Varma, a specialist in bringing real lives to celluloid, definitely has the skills to make her biopic. Some sections of media even reported that RGV has already started working on the script. Some other media reported that writer Sirasri, who is close aide of RGV revealed this news.

But now RGV condemned this news. He tweeted, ” Sections of media reporting I am making a biopic on sridevi is untrue ..I believe it’s foolish to attempt also because there cannot be any actress who’s remotely worthy enough to play her”.

So, it’s now clear that RGV is not making Sridevi biopic.

Nag’s Officer inspired by Hollywood film ?

0

That Nagarjuna and Ram Gopal Varma reunited after two decades is a known news. The film has been titled as Officer and Nagarjuna will be seen as a trigger-happy ruthless cop in this action drama. While the makers have successfully kept the film’s plot point under wraps, a couple of posters in which Nag was seen featuring with a little girl have triggered some speculations in audience.

It is believed that the storyline of Officer is slightly inspired by the story of Hollywood film Taken in which a CIA officer starts a mission to trace out his daughter who gets kidnapped by sex traffickers. Sources say that Ram Gopal Varma has tweaked the storyline to suit the sensibilities of audience here and packed it many commercial elements.

We have to wait until May 25th to know if this buzz turns out to be true or not.
