Sukumar Speaks about Rangasthalam

0

The logical filmmaker Sukumar has scored another fantastic hit with Ram Charan’s latest release Rangasthalam which earned rave reviews all over. Ram Charan’s performance in particular has become talk of the town and critics are terming it to be his career best performance. The film’s team organized a thank you meet in which Sukumar opened up about his experience working with Ram Charan during the film.

Sukumar said that Ram Charan went entirely into the skin of the character and whenever the director used to ask the hero to chill out wearing trousers, Cherry used to say, “The lungi is more comfortable , Bro!” which surprised the director. Sukumar also said that Cherry worked very hard to de-glamorize himself and suit for the role perfectly. The actor didn’t even hesitate to wear a hearing aid being a Mega Powerstar and assured Sukumar that it is the right thing to do! It is also incredible to see Charan trust Sukumar completely and the result is reflected in the output.

Before the release of the film, the makers of Rangasthalam were apprehensive about the length of it and had to cut some additional scenes. But now that the film is a big hit, Sukumar is willing to even add off the additional footage which might make the fans happier. The success of Rangasthalam proves once again that Telugu audience are willing to accept any experimental film as long as it has good story and acting performances.

Sukumar achieved what Krishna Vamshi couldn’t?

0

Mega power star Ram Charan’s Rangasthalam released today and opened with very good mouth talk. Especially, Ram Charan’s makeover and his performance in the role of Chitti Babu is very much appreciated by his fans as well as general audience.

Though Ram Charan has very good hit in the form of “Magadheera” movie, his performances in other movies were not much talked about. In fact is performance in some of the movies (like Zanjeer) was actually trolled buy some section of people. So Ram Charan was in need of a good and challenging role that show cases his acting skills. Probably this is the reason why mega family (Read Chiranjeevi) chose Krishna Vamsi in the past for a movie with Ram Charan (Govindudu Andarivadele). It seems Krishna Vamsi was chosen with the same expectation as Sukumar is chosen now for Rangastalam movie. Govindudu Andarivadele movie also was in the village backdrop. Krishna Vamsi also known for extracting great performances from all actors. Also he is known for bringing the rawness onto the screen, extracting intense performances from all the actors including supporting characters, and showing village nativity brilliantly on screen. Krishna Vamsi also known for selecting slightly offbeat stories and make it a commercial success. But all of this was history and the fact is Krishna Vamshi could not achieve what he was intended for with that movie. Govindudu Andarivadele movie was neither a commercial success nor it could exhibit Ram Charan’s acting prowess.

However, now it seems Sukumar is able to achieve what exactly Krishna Vamsi missed. Sukumar is able to extract top notch performance from Ram Charan and all other actors. He could present a village story and that too a periodic one with so much of authenticity and accuracy. Sukumar is also able to make a top commercial hero act in the off beat role of a deaf person. It is not an exaggeration if one says, Ram Charan answered all those who trolled his performance in earlier movies, with one stellar performance in this movie. Though due credit must be given to Ram Charan for accepting this role and putting lot of hard work, one should remember that the way Sukumar conceived and etched this character is the main reason for such outstanding result on screen. Usually all these are strengths of director Krishna Vamsi but as has he lost his Midas touch, stars and producers are not running behind him nowadays. So, overall, movie analysts feel mega family achieved their mission of presenting Ram Charan in a performance oriented and offbeat role and yet achieve commercial success through Sukumar now though the similar mission was failed when Krishnavamshi was at the helm!!

Rangasthalam Review — Charan 2.0

Rangasthalam Review

Telugu360 Rating : 3/5

Ram Charan’s long awaited rustic entertainer Rangasthalam 1985, directed by Sukumar, is all set to take the box office by storm. Majority of the film has been shot in Godavari region and the art work is said to be the mainstay of the film.

Story:

Rangasthalam is an uncomplicated, familiar story set in 1980s era. Chittibabu ( Ram Charan) , a village youngster, lives life to fullest despite being partially deaf. He goes all out to support his Dubai returned elder brother Kumar Babu ( Adi Pinisetty). Ruthless baddy Phanindra Bhupati ( Jagapathi Babu ) is the president of Rangasthalam village for continuous 30 years. He kills anyone who dares to question his atrocities. After a sequence of incidents, Kumar Babu revolts against the president, files nomination against him in upcoming elections.

Rest of the story is how Chittibabu helps his brother and deals with the consequences.

Performances:

When Ramcharan announced this film with Sukumar, cine lovers expected a performance-oriented role is on cards. However, some were not convinced about Charan’s choice to play village lad that too who is partially deaf. But, with his hard work, Ram Charan has excelled in performance as chittibabu – the sound engineer. Be it his acts to cover-up his disability, or his innocent way of expressing love to Rama Lakshmi, Or Sensitive thread with Rangammattha Or unadulterated love towards his brother or emotional revolt against the landlord .. He is at ease in every scene, delivers stellar performance. Charan carried this film single handedly.

Jagapathi Babu in first half delivers ruthless performance. Rama Lakshmi role is not a tailor made one for Samantha, but she tried hard to succeed. Anchor Anasuya as Rangammattha is a surprise pack. Adi Pinisetty as Charan’s brother is adequate. Naresh, Brahmaji played two scenes each roles and obviously they did perform well. Pooja Hegde sizzles in an item song. Devi Sri Prasad does justice to songs and background score.

Analysis:

Rangasthalam has its own merits and demerits equally. Versatile director Sukumar seems focused more on recreating 80s ambience. In each scene, each frame audience can see the utmost care had been put into to make an authentic 80s era story. Sukumar and his production team passed with distinction in this aspect. Not only the sets but also the costumes, characters’ diction, their body language etc. are so perfect. Sukumar’s characters carry real life with them than just cinematic presence Films with this backdrop have the scope to deliver heart touching emotions, but director has failed in delivering emotional threads within.

First half is very good with Charan-Samantha thread, nice songs and authentic rural setting. By interval, right premise has been set for second half. But, second half has been dragged on with boring sentiment scenes. Telugu audiences are not used for such lengthy sentiment scenes. President Jagapathi babu characterization is too good in first half, but in second half this role is abruptly sidelined and obviously overall impact is diluted. Adi Pinisetty final scene reminds us of a typical Tamil sentiment film. In second half, the violence is bit more. For the dragged second half, climax is the savior. Production values by Mythri movies are top class.

Songs :

Yentha Sakkagunnave , Rangamma Mangamma and Jigelu Rani songs came out very well on screen. Ranga Ranga Ranga sthalaana is a decent one. Other two songs are nothing to talk about. Ram Charan’s steps in Jigelu Raani song are a feast for fans and masses.

Positives:

  • Ram Charan performance
  • Very authentic recreation of 80s rural life
  • Three superhit Songs

Negatives:

  • Overdose of sentiment scenes in second half
  • No emotional connect

Verdict:

Rangasthalam is a raw drama backed by Ram Charan’s unexpected stellar performance, meticulous artwork to portray 80s ambience of a rustic village. However, terribly dragged overdose of sentiment scenes in second half kills the commercial aspect to an extent. Again in Climax , Ram Charan’s brilliant act turns saving grace. Box-office performance depends on how fans embrace this different film from a mass star.

Sukumar wants to Work with Prabhas!

2

The logical filmmaker Sukumar has the credit of working with all the young actors such as Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun, and now with Mega Powerstar Ram Charan for Rangasthalam which is due for release on 30th March. When asked about which hero he would want to work in near future, the director gave an interesting answer.

Sukumar expressed his wish to work with Young Rebel Star Prabhas and he is also willing to work for a multistarrer project as well. The director is hopeful that in the future, he might be able to do this for sure!

But will the Baahubali actor agree to work with a versatile director like Sukumar who deals with more emotional characters which are based on psyche? Definitely the combination will be downright interesting!

Akhil repeating the same mistake

0

After his debut film Akhil went down the drain at the box office, Akkineni Akhil took a long gap before finalizing his second project. Despite coming up with perfect planning and a prominent director, Akhil couldn’t deliver the much needed break with Hello, which ended as a commercial failure.

The disappointing result of Hello has put Akhil in a fix. He is once again dilly – dallying to announce his next project. The unnecessary delay may negatively impact in his career. The long he takes to lock director for his next film, the more he is going to be under pressure.

He should quickly assess his career and select scripts that will give good momentum to his career. He should take a cue from some of the current generation youngsters who are doing good number of films every year.

There were reports that he is in talks with top directors Koratala Siva and Sukumar. But, nothing official was heard till. He stated that a confirmation will be made on January 10th. But, that didn’t happen.

Both Sukumar and Siva will wrap up their current commitments very soon. So, Akhil should make a decision very soon and avoid further delay.

Both Charan & Sukumar Contributing for Delay of Rangasthalam?

0

Both Mega power star Ram Charan and director Sukumar are allegedly infamous for causing unnecessary delays for their films. And, when this duo joined forces for ‘Rangasthalam’, fans were worried about the film’s completion rather than the film’s end result.

The film’s shooting has already been long delayed. After the release of ‘Nannaku Prematho’, Sukumar took more than one year to take Charan’s film onto floors. Even after spending so much time on the pre-production, he still continued to writer scenes during shooting stage, halting planned schedules. The film’s shooting was abruptly halted in May this year for about a month and heat wave in Rajahmundry was cited as the reason.

Even after resuming the shoot sometime in June, the schedules weren’t held as per plan since Sukumar got busy with the promotions of Darsakudu. And,when the director is finally done and dusted with his production venture, Charan got busy with his father’s or his ambitious project, ‘Sye Raa’, the second production venture of Konidela Production Company.

Charan’s last film, ‘Dhruva’ had to face frequent disruptions during production stage as Cherry was then busy overseeing the production of ‘Khaidi No.150’. The same scenario is now repeating and Rangasthalam has become the scapegoat this time.

After witnessing the snail-paced progress and anticipating further delays, Mythri Movie Makers, who are bankrolling ‘Rangasthalam’, had announced the film’s release for Sankranthi, moving it from the initially planned Dasara release. Now, they might be worrying about meeting even Sankranthi deadline!!

Darshakudu’s Result to Impact Sukumar’s Brand?

Sukumar may not have great track record at box office but he is a Brand and considered one of top directors who comes up with novel cinema. His second production venture, this Friday release, ‘Darshakudu’ however doesn’t justify his ‘brand’ and the result may impact the trust of audiences on his banner, ‘Sukumar Writings’ as well as his upcoming film, ‘Rangasthalam’ starring Ram Charan.

Sukumar’s first production venture ‘Kumari 21F’ became a hit at box office, but it must be admitted that he took a big risk with that film. He produced that bold romantic drama while directing NTR’s ‘Nannaku Prematho’. His mark bold story and screenplay, coupled with Hebah Patel’s audacious performance helped the film sail at box office otherwise he would have had to face severe criticism for venturing into production while directing a big budget film.

When Sukumar announced his second production venture’s title as ‘Darshakudu’, audiences believed that it would be another path breaking film from the visionary filmmaker. Sukumar’s involvement in Darshakudu is only as producer. He however promoted the film as his own. With no noted face in the film, if audiences still went to watch this film, its just because of Sukumar’s name.

The weak screenplay and amateurish direction however disappointed the viewers. After this result, audiences may not go to theatres just by watching Sukumar’s name as producer. The talented director may have had confidence in his associate’s story, but he should have at least monitored the film’s progress.

Sukumar is the person to lose the most with the result of Darshakudu. Will this affect his directorial, ‘Rangasthalam’? People may anyway forget this small film since there is five months to the release of the Ram Charan starrer.

Darshakudu Review – A Crippled script with talentless director

Darshakudu Review , Darshakudu Movie Review

Telugu360 Rating : 1.5/5

Filmmaker Sukumar’s next production Darshakudu is one of the two films releasing today. The film marks the debut of his nephew Ashok as an actor and his close friend Hari Prasad as a director. Hyderabadi gir Eesha Rabba is the leading lady in this romantic drama.

Story:

Darshakudu is the story of a young and aspiring director who places his goal above everything else. Mahesh (Debutante hero Ashok) is extremely passionate about film direction since his childhood and settles as a light boy in Hyderabad. He narrates an excellent story to a producer, who largely agrees to do a film only if Mahesh improvises comeback the love track in the story.

Mahesh who was never in love, thinks that he cannot do justice to the love track in the script unless he experiences that kind of relationship with a girl. The following day, at his native place, he bumps into a girl Namratha ( Eesha Rebba) in a train and slowly attracts her into love relation. He only focuses on how that girl responds to various situations and incorporates it into his script. Realizing his intentions Namratha starts hating him. Rest of the story revolves around how the love hate relationship comes to a closure.

Analysis:

‘Darshakudu’ subject is quite interesting on paper, as it has ample scope to showcase struggles, emotions and some fun. This film needs conviction from its director and faith in his characters. A strong characterization is crucial for this subject, which director of the film ‘Darshakudu ’ totally overlooked. Hero has been showcased as a guy who can be manipulative, who can go to any extent to get a chance as director. Hero has to make a choice between career or love at times. Consistency in his approach would have made this film more honest at least. Mahesh (Aspiring director) has been shown as very manipulative guy, uses even personal moments with his girlfriend into the script. But in the end he is portrayed as if he is aware of the fact that Namratha ( Eesha) is his childhood friend. Towards the end, he twists that all those manipulative scenes as true feelings. This did not go down well. Especially because it contradicts the core point of the aspiring director being ruthless manipulator. This context cannot be justified with his dual intent [ Kala Vs Prema ( Art Vs Love ) ] . That’s where the audience get disconnected with the protagonist.

This film lacks entertainment despite being a filmy based theme. While in second half towards pre-climax, the drama is a bit engaging momentarily, the climax is again a farce. First half of the film is not interesting either. On the whole, even though each half of the story runs only for an hour, it is still boring.

‘Passionate aspiring director’ is a fancy word for wanna be directors in KrishnaNagar of Hyderabad. ‘Darshakudu’ film is a lame attempt to portray one such director’s life until his first directorial film hits the screens.

Performances:

Debutante hero Ashok is just okay. In his role as a director, one cannot complain much about on his short height and pretty average looks. However, a better performer would have elevated the role further. Heroine Eesha Rebba fits the role very well. She had an ease in performing the roles of a lover and costumes designer. Her role demands some complexity. She should portray a girl who is in love with the director simultaneously expressing hatred towards him as she realizes that he is utilizing her to get script ideas. She is convincingly good in that aspect. Hero’s father and heroine’s father roles are played by unknown small-time artists. YouTube star Sudharshan played hero’s sidekick and has done a decent job.

Technicians:

Sai Karthik’s music in this film doesn’t have any noteworthy songs to memorize. Darshakudu theme music provides some consolation. Cinematographer Praveen Anumolu succeeded in giving class and mid-range budget look for this low budget film.

Director Jakka Hari prasad has delivered a very bland movie. Neither the dialogues nor the screenplay are engaging. He depended on only one single point “a director who takes inspirations from his real-life incidents to incorporate them into his script”.

Verdict:

Darshakudu movie offers nothing to common audience. Poor script, amateurish hero and lack of any entertainment mark this film as a total disappointment. This kind of films, even if they are not appealing to the regular audience, should at least show the struggle or pain of cinema industry people in a way that they can try to relate to it. This film fails even in that perspective.
Overall, a pathetic effort by Sukumar Writings.
