Secret deal: Will Pawan field a weak candidate?

0

Till now, some TDP leaders have said BJP will not get a single seat in 2019 elections if it contests alone. At the same time, they are saying there will be a secret understanding between YCP and BJP.

So, one way TDP leaders’ is correct and in the other instance, their logic is wrong. According to latest developments, BJP will certainly win some seats and this is clear from the facts below.

YCP is not going to give party ticket to its strong leader Lella Appi Reddy in Guntur West assembly segment in 2019 elections. In his place, it is all set to field a considerably weak candidate named Yesuratnam, who is a retired police officer and political novice.

Why does YCP come forward to ensure defeat of its own candidate? Analysts say that this is only part of the secret deal. Sources say this is all to benefit BJP State president Kanna Lakshminarayana who is going to contest from Guntur West. But this may not be enough to ensure Kanna’s victory. So, it requires another helping hand, that is from Pawan. Now TDP leaders are eager to find out who are probable candidates from Jana Sena and whether Pawan will pick up a strong candidate from among the available lot in Guntur West.

So, clarity has come with regard to BJP-YCP deal. But what about Jana Sena? Will it take the secret deal? Only time will tell.

BJP set to provoke Seema sentiment in AP

0

Given any opportunity, BJP leaders in AP are criticising what they describe as a centralised development in Amaravati capital city and its nearby districts and their related projects like multi-crore Polavaram.

The reasons for BJP’s changed strategy are understandable as they come in the face of increasing loss of people’s trust in different regions of AP caused by TDP’s bitter criticism on special status and reorganisation promises.

BJP is now saying Rayalaseema projects and this region’s developmental works are being neglected while those in other parts of the State are given greater importance by TDP regime. The BJP leadership is of the view that it should at least make big gains in some parts by provoking Seema sentiment.

This is why that during his recent visit to Seema, BJP state president Kanna Lakshminarayana said that the government was ignoring Handri-Neeva and Galeru-Nagari irrigation projects at the cost of welfare of farmers in the region.

He mocked at the TDP, saying Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has been visiting Polavaram every week but not showing one-tenth of this interest to Seema projects.

BJP is also criticising TDP on the issue of its failed promises made in 2014 elections with regard to Seema region development. Proddatur Milk Factory was not revived till now and there is no move to restore Chennur Sugar Factory. In CM’s own district, the public sector dairy was not revived nor any effort was made towards that goal till now, Kanna said.

On its part, it is well known that TDP is criticising BJP Central leadership and PM Modi over failed promises of 2014 state division.

Finally, all the parties are coming out with their election manifestoes by listing same old promises with new catchlines once again. Ultimately, it is for the people to decide which party failed less and which failed more.

Tough fight in Kamareddy

1

Majority of the constituencies in the undivided Nizamabad district will have triangle competition in upcoming Telangana Assembly elections and Kamareddy is among them which will be experienced a tough fight between TRS, Congress and BJP.

The TRS party has announced the sitting MLA and whip in the legislation assembly Mr. Gampa Govardhan Reddy as its candidate at Kamareddy while opposition leader in the legislation council Mr. Shabbir Ali is suppose to contest from here and he has already begun campaign. Besides these two contenders, the BJP is almost finalized the name of ex-chairman of Zilla Parishad Mr. Venkata Ramana Reddy.

The TRS is more focusing on the migrations of 2nd class leaders from Congress and BJP in order to strengthen its cadre and it had already succeeded in reaching its goal on ‘Operation Akarsh’, which led Mr. Shabbir Ali to stick to the segment to protect the cadre of Congress. Meanwhile, the BJP’s candidate Mr. Venkata Ramana Reddy is organizing door-to-door campaign along with VHP, BJYM and RSS workers.

While all the three key contenders have cadre strength in the segment, the strategies by the parties is being changed day-by-day. Mr. Gampa Govardhan Reddy began his political career in 1987 by contesting as Single-Window Chairman and got succeeded. He contested as MLA from Kamareddy for five times and got victory for five terms. Though the TRS candidates are facing threats from rebels in other segments, Mr. Govardhan Reddy took precautions to ensure rebel-less situations. But, the opposition leader Mr. Shabbir Ali is a strong contender to him. Mr. Ali began his political career in 1987 by winning MPP seat from Machareddy mandal and elected as MLA from Kamareddy in 1989 followed by getting chance in cabinet. He lost his election in 1994 and 99 but got victory in 2004 and served as minister in Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s cabinet. He is facing threats of migrations from the party as majority of 2nd class leaders were shifted to TRS including his key associates. The BJP has hopes on its strong cadre and traditional vote bank of Hindus.

BJP’s 3 leaders damaging AP interests : Buddha Venkanna

0

The TDP leaders are hell bent on making BJP a greater villain in the issue of injustice done to AP people. It not only supported state division in Parliament in 2014 but later did not do much to help the fledgling state after coming to power at the Centre.

Now TDP MLC and Government Whip Buddha Venkanna came out with a list of three betrayers among BJP leaders who are doing everything they can to further sabotage AP. Their names are given as MP GVL Narasimha Rao, party state president Kanna Lakshminarayana and MLC Somu Veerraju.

According to Venkanna, these three leaders have no moral right but still they talk a lot about irregularities and corruption in AP. GVL is known for his power-mongering nature and his tendency to make use of leaders in power corridors in Delhi whichever party is in ruling there. GVL has no connect with people at the grassroot level and that his only strength is his ability to spread misinformation, said Venkanna.

With regard to Kanna Lakshminarayana, the TDP MLC says that Kanna has received notices from the CBI in connection with a corruption case. Kanna is known for his strong arm politics and there is evidence of how he got BJP state president post by threatening to quit that party if a decision was made against him.

Buddha Venkanna later attacked Somu Veerraju dismissing him as a serious politician saying that the BJP MLC has no capacity to win a sarpanch seat in a village. Everybody knows how Veerraju has violated dharma of alliance politics in the state by constantly criticising TDP.

In the end, Venkanna concluded by saying that it is under the nose of Narendra Modi that most corruption is going on in India now and that BJP leaders have lost their moral high ground to talk about others in this respect.

Five reasons why AP people will ignore BJP

0

Year 2019 is going to give BJP AP unit a bitter experience best summed up in this quotation. “When troubles come, they come not in singles but in battalions”. This aptly describes the present predicament going by the public mood building up in the State against BJP despite it being the ruling party at the Centre.

All the efforts being made by BJP National President Amit Shah and his advisors are not getting the desired results to change status quo in the field level. They are no able to attract many aspirants who usually make a beeline for MLA tickets by now, nor is there any major migration of second-rung leaders who may want to shift loyalties due to ticket denials in other parties.

The general impression, as of now, is that BJP comes nowhere near the other major parties and that Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena is far ahead of it in terms of voter appeal and vote bank. The TDP and YCP may be afraid of Jana Sena a bit as it is likely to split vote in some places fairly well. They have no such fear with regard to BJP state unit as it may end up having far less impact in the elections.

Going by the emerging political scenario, BJP may even find it difficult to get candidates to contest in most assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies. BJP won four assembly seats in 2014 while Congress drew a blank. At that time, alliance with TDP helped BJP to a great extent while Congress fought it alone and lost deposits in over 150 out of total 175 segments in AP. There may be a reversal of roles in 2019.

Of the five major factors that stand in the path of BJP in next elections,
the first and foremost one is stated to be its unenviable status of being an untouchable in the eyes of voters and alliance seekers. Jagan is almost afraid of even talking about alliance with BJP. Amit Shah might have thought of reaching a tie-up with YCP by giving support to Jaganmohan Reddy in different ways, but TDP has outwitted BJP and created a strong anti-BJP mood among the people in respect of non-fulfilment of special status and other reorganisation promises. If Jagan dares to ally with BJP, it is going to be a massive self-goal at this juncture. Entering election fray alone means a total rout for BJP just like the position of Congress in 2014 elections when it drew a blank. The scene reverses now with BJP likely to get zero while Congress’s position may improve a little.

The second spoilsport is BJP’s belated criticism of the ruling TDP which is not being received well among the masses, not to speak of the educated and informed sections. It is not that the TDP’s rule has won favour of all sections of people but that the common man is suspicious as to how can BJP suddenly change stand and criticise TDP after sharing power with it for over three and half years since 2014. The sudden change in tactics has put BJP in an embarrassing situation and its leaders’ increasing attacks on sand and liquor mafias are only viewed as something made out of political interests.

Thirdly, BJP lost the confidence of AP people by announcing that special status would not be possible. The party preferred to say this at a time when the status issue demand was spiralling into a major sentiment that triggered a feeling of betrayal among the people who were seething with anger since state division. BJP leadership forgot that the wounds caused by AP bifurcation are still fresh and rival parties will surely take political advantage out of this. Now BJP leaders will have to keep silent while other parties make the most of main election plank which is special status.

Fourth factor is the selection of Kapu leader Kanna Lakshminarayana as BJP state president. A vast section of Kapu and allied castes are openly supporting matinee idol Pawan en bloc. The proof for this polarisation in Kapu vote was seen in 2009 elections when Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party split anti-government vote considerably. PRP got over 17 per cent vote that year in United AP and won 18 seats. As Chiranjeevi’s favoured brother and a successful actor, Pawan is expected to wield far greater influence on Kapus than Kanna Lakshminarayana.

The fifth and final factor obstructing BJP in AP is its inability to counter TDP’s charges on issues of its alleged secret deal with Jagan, softened investigation in Jagan’s assets cases and non-allocation of enough funds for completing Amaravati capital, central educational institutions and irrigation projects like Polavaram.

Countering BJP criticism of corruption, TDP MLC Buddha Venkanna challenged for a debate on the assets of BJP state president Kanna Lakshminarayana saying that it was everybody’s knowledge that Kanna received notices from CBI in a corruption case. He dismissed BJP criticism as mere political allegations aimed at undermining the good work being done by Chandrababu Naidu to develop AP and Amaravati.

On his part, BJP MLC Somu Veerraju criticized TDP saying there were irregularities in all sectors under Chandrababu rule and nothing is an exception for this from Polavaram national project to Neeru Meeru works in village level.

All said, 2019 is going to be a suspense-filled unique election with only one exception. That BJP will not find a partner while Congress has already got one.

Sanchaita Gajapathi Raju joins BJP

0

BJP AP is in hot pursuit of welcoming new promising leaders into its fold in order to prove its critics wrong in Andhra Pradesh.

The party is rejoicing over Sanchaita Gajapathi Raju, a scion of the Vizianagaram royal family, coming forward to play an active role in BJP AP politics. She is daughter of former minister and parliamentarian Anand Gajapathi Raju and former MP Uma Gajapathi Raju.

Ashok Gajapathi Raju, elder brother of Anand, is a polit bureau member of TDP and former Union Minister for Civil Aviation. While Anand served as minister in NTR cabinet and also worked with Congress for sometime, Ashok was with Janata Party and later joined TDP staying with the party till now during his long career.

This is the first time a member of Gajapathi Raju’s family is joining BJP. Sanchaita is running an NGO named Social Awareness Newer Alternatives (SANA) to make use of new technologies to improve clean drinking water supply in coastal villages. She is known for her work in East Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts.

BJP can’t win a single seat: AP Minister

0

TDP is stepping up its criticism of BJP each passing day. Now, Excise Minister K.S. Jawahar went to the extent of saying that BJP will not win a single MLA seat in the coming 2019 elections in Andhra Pradesh.

The confidence of TDP leaders is understandable seeing how much BJP leaders have rubbed salt into the wounds of already greatly-hurt AP people with regard to the special status, funds allocation and other failed promises.

During his current tour in Guntur district, Minister Jawahar said that YCP leader Jagan, Jana Sena leader Pawan and BJP leader Khanna Laxminarayana should bear the entire blame for the betrayal of AP people by the Centre. So much was promised to AP at the time of bifurcation. In the past four years, BJP did nothing to undo injustice done to AP and the people would not forget this, Jawahar said.

The Minister made a special mention of Pawan during his speeches when he said that Jana Sena leader had no sense of direction. While Chiranjeevi sold out Praja Rajyam Party to Congress wholesale, Pawan is going to sell out Jana Sena to BJP by retail, he added.

Jawahar represents Kovvur assembly constituency in West Godavari district and his attack comes timely as Pawan is focusing right now on the Godavari districts in order to make some early gains ahead of elections.

Vizag North: Will BJP MLA join TDP?

0

Visakhapatnam North MLA Penmetsa Vishnu Kumar Raju is likely to quit BJP and join TDP ahead of the 2019 general elections. Rumours are spread in political circles that the TDP leadership has not appointed any party incharge for Vizag North assembly segment just because it wants Raju to contest next elections from here.

An outspoken and vocal speaker, Vishnu Kumar Raju has carried out his duties as BJP Legislature Party leader in Assembly all these years efficiently by countering TDP leaders in various debates on Centre’s injustice to AP after state division. But in the recent Assembly session, Raju’s role in passing of unanimous resolution became a point of concern for BJP top leaders.

At the recent Kakinada meeting, addressed by senior BJP leader Ram Madhav, the issue of Vishnu Kumar Raju not objecting to TDP’s unanimous resolution against Centre came up for discussion. Though senior leaders took objection to Raju’s role, the Vizag MLA strongly defended himself saying that the unanimous resolution was not formally passed by Assembly as voting was not taken up.

Raju faced criticism from within the party ever since and he was stated to have spoken about his likelihood of leaving BJP sooner or later with his friends and followers. Hearing about this, rival parties began efforts to invite him. YCP leaders asked Raju to contest 2019 elections on their party ticket from Vizag North. After he did not accept it, YCP had allotted this ticket to KK Raju.

Now, the TDP has kept its party incharge’s post in this segment vacant. Political observers are interpreting it as an indication of bringing in Vishnu Kumar Raju to make him contest on TDP ticket from Vizag North.

BJP treating AP CM as a greater threat than Congress?

0

These days, the BJP senior leaders are looking for every little chance to criticise and defame AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. They seem to be least bothered whether a given issue is worthy or not to be used to attack a high profile politician occupying such a high position.

An immediate example is the recent effort by BJP MP GVL Narasimha Rao to blow UNO invitation out of proportions. The Chief Minister’s Office quickly rose to the occasion and made public the UNO invitation leaving no chance for BJP MP to keep mum without making further statements.

Narasimha Rao’s doubt was that AP CM’s scheduled address to UN conclave on Sep 24 was merely a publicity stunt aimed at attracting the wider attention of the Telugu people not only in AP but also in US and other parts of the world. There would be little chance to mislead people with regard to a CM’s programme as the CMO activities are looked after by senior IAS officers who have vast administrative experience and who cannot go wrong in such important and sensitive matters.

AP CM has already reached New York and addressed a Telugu NRIs conclave. He is going to address world leaders as the keynote speaker at the conference to be organised by the UN Environment Programme in New York on ‘Financing Sustainable Agriculture: Global challenges and opportunities”.

As BJP leaders go speechless at this development, the TDP leaders are making merry by seeking to hit back at their opponents. TDP MP Maganti Murali Mohan has now said that the BJP leaders and PM Modi were apparently jealous of the many accomplishments of AP CM and more recently of the prestigious UNO invitation.

Ahead of 2019 elections, BJP wants to strengthen itself in southern states which is why its leaders’ anxiety and eagerness to take on rivals. After the narrow loss of power in Karnataka in May, 2018, BJP leaders realised how TDP had played its role in causing this defeat by making Telugus to favour JDS-Cong combine there.

Expectedly, BJP senior leaders are hell bent upon hitting back at AP CM and weaken his party by 2019 general elections. In the process, they are not bothering much to criticise AP Congress leaders and their activities.

‘BJP Operation Garuda’ going to ruin AP: Shivaji

0

G. Ravikiran

In the changed political scenario, the game is turning uglier with each passing day. Nobody is able to guess who is whose friend and who is whose foe. TDP and Congress are clearly going to contest together. But YCP and BJP are contesting separately with no probable allies of their own as of now. Pawan Kalyan may allow left parties to join him. There is talk that BJP, YCP and Pawan have secret understandings. They may contest separately now but they are likely to come together after elections with the sole purpose of preventing TDP from coming to power.

As things stand as they are, actor-activist Shivaji is continuing his crusading campaign against the BJP leadership by referring to the so-called secretive ‘Operation Garuda’ again and again. He was a former leader of BJP and he came out of that party in protest against the anti-AP stand taken by the Centre allegedly for political gains. Now Operation Garuda is more true than ever before and it is being used by the BJP to destroy all prospects of stability and development in the residual Andhra Pradesh state, says Shivaji. It is intended to hurt TDP where it hurts most. Though not a member of TDP, the actor has great concerns that if non-TDP parties come to the fore, it will have disastrous effects on AP.

Shivaji spoke at the maha rally on Saturday organised by the SC, ST, BC, Minorities United Forum to mark the Constitution Protection Day in Guntur town. Social Welfare Minister Nakka Ananda Babu, MLA Shravan Kumar, senior leader Varla Ramaiah and others spoke. Using the occasion to express his concerns, Shivaji said he could not understand as to why Jagan and Pawan were not realising the harm that they were going to cause to AP because of their political stands and because of their indifference to people’s problems. At the same time, Shivaji threatened to expose all those who are trying to hurt him in different ways. He appealed to the people to repel all those forces that are trying to destabilise Andhra Pradesh.

Shivaji first talked of Operation Garuda and now he is saying that he will reveal more sensational stories if anybody dares to needlessly interfere with him. In the past, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu also referred to Operation Garuda as a conspiracy of the BJP to destroy and finish TDP. He blamed Jagan and Pawan for playing to the tunes of BJP leadership instead of strengthening the cause of developing the crisis-hit AP.

BJP out to oust CM Kumaraswamy in Karnataka

1

Ravikiran G.

The BJP has yet again begun its efforts to dislodge the HD Kumaraswamy government in Karnataka by taking advantage of internal rivalries in the Congress party there. The Janata Dal Secular leaders were very tense as they were afraid of nearly 20 Congress MLAs joining the opposition BJP ranks in order to oust Kumaraswamy anytime now. CM Kumaraswamy himself expressed his disappointment and strongly criticised the BJP for continuing its efforts to destabilise his government. He made no secret of his apprehensions at a public meeting at Hasan now. This time, Congress leader and Minister Ramesh Jharkiholi and his brother Sateesh Jharkiholi are leading the revolt in which plans were already drawn to shift 20 Congress MLAs to Maharashtra where BJP is in power and it will give shelter. In this year’s assembly election, Congress won 78 MLA seats and JDS won 37 seats. But BJP emerged as the single largest party by winning 104 seats which was nine seats short of the total 113 majority required to form the government.

As there was no consensus CM candidate in Congress, they chose to make their alliance partner Kumaraswamy Chief Minister. Ever since, coalition crisis and alliance partners’ greed haunted his government during cabinet expansions, nominated posts and so on. Congress Coordination Committee Chairman Siddaramaiah was stated to have begun damage control exercise amid talk of the 20 MLAs likely to be taken in Indian Air Force aircraft to Maharashtra. BJP is trying all tricks up its sleeve to destabilise the frail JDS-Congress at every given opportunity. It used its power at the Centre to get ED raids conducted on the property of Minister DK Sivakumar sometime ago. The incident created tensions between the cadres of JDS and BJP in Bangalore. Politics of advantage-taking are unstoppable in this era of weak coalition governments in the states.

BJP not respecting federal spirit: AP Assembly

0

G Ravikiran

In a unanimous resolution, AP Assembly took strong objection to the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for not conferring special status on AP and for not implementing the other promises made in the AP Reorganisation Act 2014.

As the current session came to a close, the ruling TDP took the opportunity and introduced the resolution to attack the Centre on bifurcation promises. The BJP AP leaders had no choice but to silently accept and support the resolution to avoid inviting greater disapproval of the AP people.
The Assembly made a scathing attack saying that “the BJP government at the Centre was not showing federal and democratic spirit with regard to AP promises. It should note that all parties in the country said in parliament that the special status is the right of AP people. This promise was made at the time of state division and was made by the then Prime Minister in the Parliament. Now the Centre was wrong in trying to refuse this in the name of 14th Finance Commission not recommending the same. Then how is it allowing 11 other states to enjoy tax concessions and other benefits of special status?”
TDP National President and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu used the occasion to portray the BJP as the main enemy of AP now while asserting that the people would also defeat YCP and BJP local leaders for their support to the anti-AP policies of the Centre.

Naidu said: “These parties are acting like the British Raj in colonial era. They are forgetting the fact that they are part of a democratic system. Our only question is why injustice is being done to AP without a stop even four years after division. The TRS in Telangana once supported AP cause but it withdrew that support now only because of the pressure brought by the BJP leadership. This kind of negative mindset is hurting AP people now and there they are causing more damage to future generations. People will remember this”

Mr Naidu deplored that the Centre was collecting huge taxes but not passing on the consequential benefits. It is treating AP people as its slaves and not as rightful citizens.

As usual, the YCP members were absent in the session. BJP Legislature Party leader Vishnukumar Raju had no option but to say that as a person born in Andhra, he would support the resolution silently as it was pertaining to the greater cause of the state.

BJP deceived AP on all fronts: Rahul Gandhi

0

During his current tour in Kurnool, All India Congress Committee President Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP government at the centre in a no-holds-barred attack. He said that the BJP leadership had failed to do justice to the AP people on all fronts in the past four years of its rule.

Addressing Satyameva Jayate public meeting in the town, he recalled that when the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh promised special status for five years, the BJP leaders demanded it for 10 years.
But after coming to power, the BJP did nothing to fulfill that promise while at the same time taking a totally different stand, he said. Rahul emphatically said that the special status should not be seen just as a political promise but it should be regarded as the right of the AP people. He deplored that the BJP had not hesitated to carry out a misinformation campaign to leave an impression that the status couldn’t be possible. Referring to other aspects, Rahul said that the BJP leaders had also failed on promises such as Kadapa steel plant, development of backward regions via special packages, national project status to the lifeline Polavaram project and Vizag railway zone. He also lamented that there was no progress in execution of various central educational institutions in AP. Rahul said that the ruling party at the centre clearly had no respect for the AP Reorganization Act 2014. He promised that he would put his first signature on the special status file after winning the 2019 elections.

United AP’s last chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy asserted that AP would get special status only if Rahul became elected as the Prime Minister of the country in next election. Congress AP Observer Oommen Chandy, Party State President N Raghuveera Reddy, former minister Kotla Surya Prakash Reddy and others spoke.

BJP MP trolled for allowing party worker to wash his feet & drink that water

0

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey trolled by netizens and slammed by opponent political party leaders for allowing a party worker to wash his feet and then drink the water that was used for washing the feet. Even more disgusting is BJP MP defended himself for this and says this is part of tradition.

Nishikant Dubey is BJP MP from Jharkhand. On Sunday, he was at a campaign rally. After he finished his speech, a BJP worker came to him with a plate and glass and sat near his feet. The BJP worker washed BJP MP Dubey’s feet, wiped them with a cloth and drank the water on the plate as supporters cheered. The video of entire video was posted in social media and it went viral. Netizens trolled him and political leaders slammed him. Kapil Sibal, Congress man, slammed him and told him to wash feet of Modi and drink that water.Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party slammed Dubey saying the “arrogance of BJP leaders have reached the zenith.”

However, MP Dubey defended himself by saying, it is a common custom to honour guests in Jharkhand and cited Lord Krishna doing the same for Sudama in Mahabharata.

Ramdev Baba embarrasses BJP again

0

Noted Yoga Guru Ramdev Baba is giving sleepless nights to the BJP leadership these days. Now he says he will be able to make available diesel and petrol at just Rs 35 to Rs 40 per litre to make the common man’s life easy.

The magic formula proposed by him is more to do with reducing tax burden on fuel prices. On top of it, the Baba of Patanjali fame also proposes higher prices for the rich sections of society. While proposing these wishful measures, the Baba took care to say that he still has hope that Prime Minister Modi would take steps for bringing down fuel prices soon. The Baba has not been talking kindly of the BJP and Mr Modi for a long time now. There are rumours that he is not going to support BJP in 2019 elections under any circumstances. His comments came amid widespread concerns all over India in recent days over relentless hikes in fuel prices. Petrol price rose above Rs 82 per litre as of now.

Fuel prices: Amit Shah says government to come out with a stand

0

BJP President Amit Shah on Saturday said both the party and the government are concerned over the rising prices of petrol and diesel and that the government will soon come out with a stand.

Addressing a news conference here, he said the rise in fuel prices and the weakening of the rupee were the result of international developments.

“We are trying to find ways. The government will soon come out before people with a stand,” he said.

Shah attributed the increase in fuel prices to US-China trade war and the tension in ties between the US and oil producing nations.

The BJP leader claimed that the weakening of the Indian rupee against the US dollar is “not as bad as the impact on other currencies.”

Congress, BJP attack each other over Mallya; Rahul seeks Jaitley’s resignation

0

A fresh war of words broke out between the BJP and Congress over Vijay Mallya on Thursday with Congress President Rahul Gandhi seeking Finance Minister Arun Jaitleys resignation over “free passage” given to the fugitive businessman and the BJP hitting out by alleging that UPA government gave “sweet deals” to him and that Gandhi family “partially owned the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines through proxy”.

The ruling party rejected the demand for Jailtley’s resignation and instead sought to turn the tables on Congress by asking Rahul Gandhi to quit in view of his involvement in National Herald case.

The day saw two press conferences each by the Congress and BJP with Gandhi coming to party’s central office to attack Jaitley.

It came a day after Mallya said he had met Jaitley and the Union minister rubbished the claim of any formal meeting.

Gandhi accused Jaitely of “colluding” with Mallya who is facing charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to around Rs 9,000 crore.

He asked why Jaitley did not inform the investigating agencies about Mallya’s plans to leave India.

“There is a clear-cut collusion. He (Jaitley) should have confessed (about the meeting) and he should resign. The Finance Minister talks to an absconder (Mallya) and the absconder tells the Finance Minister that I am going to London. The Finance Minister neither told the CBI, the ED or the police, why?

“He was given a free passage to leave the country by the Finance Minister. There was a lookout notice against Mallya which was diluted to an inform notice. Who changed it? This can be done only by one who controls the CBI,” he alleged.

Gandhi also demanded to know if the decision was taken by Jaitley himself or the “order came from the top”.

“The Finance Minister has colluded with a criminal running away from the country. He was told by the criminal that he is going to run away but the Finance Minister did nothing. The government is lying on Rafale, they are lying on Mallya”.

At the media conference, Congress MP P.L. Punia claimed to give an eyewitness account of the meeting between Jaitley and Mallya in the Central Hall of Parliament before the businessman fled the country on March 2, 2016.

Punia claimed the meeting between Jaitley and Mallya lasted 15-20 minutes and asked if Mallya had taken permission from Jaitley about his planned flight abroad.

Hitting out at the Congress, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra alleged that there were documents that show how RBI and UPA under Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh had given sweet deals to Kingfisher Airlines.

“And it appears through these chain of documents that Kingfisher Airlines was owned not by Mallya but by the Gandhi family through proxy,” he alleged showing the letters written by RBI to SBI requesting for the restructuring of the loans of Kingfisher Airline

The accuracy of the documents could not be ascertained. There was no immediate response from Rahul Gandhi’s office.

Patra also alleged that the party has enough evidence which shows that Rahul Gandhi was “using black money” and the Gandhi family was helping Mallya with sweet deals.

He claimed that Rahul Gandhi travelled free in Kingfisher Airlines, which was once owned by Mallya.

“Rahul Gandhi took one crore loan from a shell company, we have the confession of the company director,” Patra alleged.

At another press conference, Congress Communications In-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala posed specific questions to the Modi government.

“Why was no action taken against Vijay Mallya for bank fraud despite registration of an FIR by CBI on July 29, 2015? Who asked CBI to change its look-out notice of October 16, 2015 into a mere ‘inform notice’ on November 23, 2015? Who directed the banks to delay filing of the case in the Supreme Court,” he asked.

Earlier in the day, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters that all the allegations against Jaitley were “false”.

“All these remarks are being made after Rahul Gandhi’s London visit. Is there anything common between them (Mallya and Rahul Gandhi)?” he asked.

Railways Minister Piyush Goyal, who addressed a press conference at the BJP headquarters, said Rahul Gandhi was “facing serious criminal charges” and that he “should first resign.”

“Those who took loans from hawala companies and accumulated wealth by taking government land free of cost or at lower rate from National Herald and whose case was rejected by Delhi High Court, should resign first,” he said.

He also dismissed the claims of Punia about Mallya meeting Jaitley in the Central Hall of Parliament.

Bharat Bandh evokes mixed response, opposition rallies against BJP

0

The Bharat Bandh called by the Congress and Left on Monday against rising fuel prices and tumbling rupee evoked mixed response in the country as the opposition closed its ranks against the Modi government. The BJP dubbed the protest a failure.

The day-long shutdown affected normal life in Odisha, Karnataka, Bihar, Kerala and Tripura and triggered a mixed response in Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

But it was mostly ineffective in Mamata Banerjee-ruled West Bengal.

Shutdown enforcers resorted to blocking roads and rail tracks disrupting traffic in several parts of the country. In Bihar, a critically ill two-year-old girl died on her way to a hospital in Jehanabad town apparently due to a road blockade.

Bandh supporters allegedly resorted to violence and clashed with the police in some parts areas, prompting the ruling BJP, which dubbed the shutdown a “complete failure”, of accusing the Congress of creating an “environment of fear” by violently enforcing the shutdown.

Normal life was paralysed in Odisha with vehicular movement and train services thrown out of gear as Congress workers blocked roads and trains. Hundreds of Congress activists were arrested. The Railways cancelled 12 trains while schools and colleges were closed.

Normal life was hit in Bihar with the shutdown supported by the Rashtryia Janata Dal (RJD), Left, Hindustani Awam Morcha and Jan Adhikar Party of Pappu Yadav.

Hundreds of Congress and other opposition parties leaders and workers took to the streets. Shutdown supporters blocked national and state highways, disrupted rail and road traffic for hours and stranding thousands of passengers.

Demonstrators clashed with police in several places while dozens of vehicles in Patna were damaged.

In Karnataka, normal life was affected as public transport kept off the roads across the state. Schools and colleges were closed although state and central government offices remained open. Global software firms like Infosys and Wipro functioned normally.

Life was thrown out of gear in BJP-ruled Tripura with most markets, shops and business establishments closed and private and passenger vehicles off the roads. Government offices and some banks were open but employee attendance was low.

But the Bharatiya Janata Party claimed that Bandh was a failure in Tripura.

BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh saw stray incidents of protests. The response was mixed in Jharkhand, with few shops closed and long route buses not plying.

In flood-ravaged Left-ruled Kerala, public vehicles went off the roads but private vehicles plied in many places. Shops, markets and establishments were shut.

In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, bus services were affected and many private educational institutions remained closed.

There was a mixed response in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat, where a large number of educational institutions were shut while many vehicles remain off the roads.

In Maharashtra, the shutdown elicited mixed response in urban centres but secured widespread support in the semi-urban and rural hinterland which have been severely hit by the fuel prices and its cascading effects.

In Mumbai and other cities, large numbers took to the streets, railway stations, bus depots, and other public places. But suburban trains, BEST buses, schools and colleges functioned normally. Shops and commercial establishments downed shutters in many localities.

The shutdown was mostly ineffective in West Bengal. Banks, educational institutions in Kolkata were mostly open while trading activities in the city were more or less normal.

The ruling Trinamool Congress supported the issues on which the shutdown was called but opposed the strike in line with its stated anti-strike policy.

Meanwhile, in the national capital, Congress President Rahul Gandhi led the opposition’s show of strength, staging a foot march in support of the Bharat Bandh from Rajghat to Ramlila Maidan in the heart of the city.

The rally drew leaders of the Janata Dal-Secular, Trinamool Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Nationalist Congress Party, Loktantrik Janata Dal, Rashtriya Lok Dal, All India United Democratic Front, Revolutionary Socialist Party and Aam Aadmi Party. Also in attendance were former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

Manmohan Singh hit out at the BJP for “miserably” failing to control fuel prices.

Rahul Gandhi flayed Modi for his stoic silence over rising fuel prices, tumbling rupee, Rafale fighter jet deal and agrarian distress in the country.

The Left parties took out a separate rally in the national capital.

Meanwhile, the BJP said the hike in fuel prices was a “momentary difficulty” and claimed the shutdown was a complete failure.

“Bharat Bandh has been unsuccessful. We condemn the violence being used to instil fear among citizens across the country,” Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

Strategic alliance in states to defeat BJP in 2019 polls: Sibal

0

Congress and other opposition parties will enter into strategic political alliances in states to defeat the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, feels former Union Minister Kapil Sibal, who says a pan-India alliance may be difficult before the polls.

He also asserted that the issue of who will be the Prime Ministerial candidate of the opposition will be sorted out by the parties at the right time. The BJP’s alliance partners have fallen out, he said and does not see the ruling party securing enough numbers even to think of forming the government.

“People of India are connecting with us because the people have realised that this sort of tsunami of jumlas (rhetoric) has not taken India anywhere. The dreams that were promised have come crashing down. The communications revolution is a great benefactor in many senses.

“But in the context of this Prime Minister, the communications revolution has ensured that whatever he said in the past can be repeated to him, haunt him. This was not so when the communications revolution had not taken place because it is in electronic mode, whatever speeches he made and whatever he said is going to haunt him. Public memory is refreshed by repeating those promises that he made,” Sibal told IANS in an interview.

His book ‘Shades of Truth — A Journey Derailed’ published by Rupa Publications releasing on Friday analyses the four years of NDA rule under Modi, the weaknesses that undid the UPA regime, the 2G and coal “scams” among other things.

Replying to questions, the former HRD minister said any attempts by BJP to polarise people before elections would not pay.

“It would not matter. I think the people of India, their eyes have been opened to the reality of this leadership,” he said.

Asked about his view which he has written in the book that Congress would have a dilemma in West Bengal on whether to tie with the Left or the ruling Trinamool Congress, he said, “That we will see. I don’t decide these issues. I have said what I said in the book.”

To a question whether there will be pan-India alliance or state-specific alliances, Sibal said, “I have said in the book that a pan-India alliance is difficult.”

Asked if he was confident about an opposition alliance against BJP, he said “100 per cent”.

When pressed to answer whether it would be a grand alliance, Sibal said, “There certainly will be strategic alliances because there are common interests. So there is the lowest common denominator at work.”

Sibal, who was elected from the Chandni Chowk constituency of the national capital in the 2004 and 2009 Lok Sasbha elections said in reply to another query whether Congress should partner with AAP in Delhi that “I don’t think we have asked for alliance but they (Congress leadership) will decide”.

Asked about the problems that could emerge in the opposition alliance over the Prime Minister’s post, the Congress leader shot back, “that (prime minister) will emerge”.

When told about Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) riposte as to “who is the alternative to Modi”, Sibal hit back saying “what has this great Prime Minister done for India? Forget who. If you look at the record of this country, the history of the country since 1991, the greatest things have happened in coalition governments. Strong majority in 2014 has in fact resulted in belittling the future of India. Let us not go into that debate.”

He said the situation will throw up a candidate. “Always. It always does. It happened in 2004 also.”

Asked whether the Prime Minister candidate will be from Congress, he said, “I don’t know. We will see whatever emerges at that point of time. That is something people will decide.”

When told about the reservations among some opposition leaders over Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Sibal said, “Anybody may have reservations. The point in time is if and when that situation arises somebody will emerge and I think the people will decide who that somebody is going to be.”

Asked about reports that the BJP may not get majority but still could form a coalition government next year, Sibal said, “It’s all speculation. What are the numbers you are talking about. BJP is not there in Tamil Nadu. BJP is not there in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Hardly it is there in West Bengal and Odisha. Where are they going to get the seats?

“They got all seats in Rajasthan, Gujarat, almost all seats in Haryana… where are they going to get the seats? I am not on numbers. If you look at the map of India and the fact that alliance partners have fallen out, I don’t see the BJP securing enough numbers even to think of forming the government,” he said.

When asked whether the opposition was simply hoping to cash on the anti-incumbency against the Modi government, the Congress leader said: “This is not about anti-incumbency. This is destroying the very fabric of India.”

“See a disruptive mindset will indulge in disruptive politics and disruptive economics. What we have seen in the last four years are disruptive mindsets who have indulged in disruptive politics and disruptive economics,” he said attacking the BJP government.

Sibal said this has nothing to do with anti-incumbency. “Destructive mindsets have resulted in destroying the peace and tranquility of India. It has destroyed the economy of India starting November 8, 2016.

He alleged that such a mindset has created levels of unemployment the country has not seen.

“We have seen violence in the streets when Dalits and minorities are attacked. We have seen institutions being destroyed, seen the media, specially the electronic media collaborate with the government. We talked about CBI as caged parrots. These are caged and singing parrots (to government’s tune). We have seen distress in the agricultural sector and fear among people that we have not seen before.

“We have seen businessmen losing heart and small businesses being destroyed. We have seen the informal sector starved of credit. This is nothing to do with anti-incumbency. It is something to do with impact that this government’s policies on the lives of people,” Sibal added.
