I-T searches continue at premises of Tollywood production house

0

Income Tax (I-T) officials continued searches at the offices of Telugu film production company, Mythri Movie Makers in Hyderabad for a second consecutive day on Thursday.

A team of I-T officials from New Delhi were also searching the residence of Sukumar, who directed movies like ‘Pushpa’, ‘Rangasthalam’ and ‘Arya’.

The I-T officials continued to search residences of Mythri Movie Makers promoters, including Erneni Naveen, Cherukuri Mohan, and Yalamanchili Ravishankar in Jubilee Hills.

The officials were checking records of their financial transactions for allegedly breaking investment regulations by bringing in funds from abroad for the second time in less than four months after December 2022.

The production house is suspected to have funnelled funds from abroad and invested in Tollywood to produce several films.

The I-T raids are happening at a time when the production house and Sukumar are engaged in the shooting of Allu Arjun-starrer ‘Pushap-2’.

Sukumar, who founded his own production business, Sukumar Writings, is working with Mythri Movie Makers to co-produce the much awaited ‘Pushpa: The Rule’, a sequel of blockbuster ‘Pushpa:The Rise’.

Mythri Movie Makers produced some big blockbusters like ‘Pushpa’, ‘Rangasthalam’, ‘Srimanthudu’, ‘Janatha Garage’, ‘Dear Comrade’, ‘Sarkar Vari Pata’, ‘Uppena’, ‘Waltair Veeraiah’ and ‘Veera Narasimha Reddy’.

It is also producing ‘Ustad Bhagat Singh’ starring actor-politician Pawan Kalyan.

The production house allegedly allowed an investment of Rs 500 crore from abroad without following the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) norms.

The production house also allegedly failed to disclose total investments and income sources in their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) filing.

This is the second time that offices and residences of Mythri Movie Makers were searched by the I-T officials. Previously searches were conducted in December 2022.

I-T raids intensified in Andhra after poll announcement

There have been a handful of Income Tax (I-T) raids on some TDP leaders since the announcement of Lok Sabha elections on March 10.

On April 3, I-T officials conducted a raid on the house of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader and Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) Trust board Chairman Putta Sudhakar Yadav in Proddatur in Kadapa district. Sudhakar Yadav was also the TDP candidate from Mydukur Assembly constituency in the same district.

Sudhakar Yadav, who is also the Chairman of PSK Infrastructure and Projects Limited, later said the IT officials left after a five-hour search without making any seizure.

I-T officials also searched TDP’s Rajya Sabha member C.M. Ramesh’s house in Kadapa district on April 5.

Ramesh, a close aide of TDP President and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, said the IT sleuths found nothing in his house.

Ramesh, whose businesses were also raided a few months ago, alleged that the BJP was behind the raids to help the YSR Congress Party.

On April 9, two days before Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the state, I-T officials conducted a raid at the residence of Gurappa Naidu, the cost accountant of TDP leader Galla Jayadev, who is seeking re-election from the Guntur Lok Sabha constituency.

The I-T Department later said it conducted the search at the residence of Gurappa Naidu after information was received on a toll-free number that cash was kept at his residence which was to be used for the elections. They seized Rs 45.4 lakh from the premises.

The I-T Department said that it was only while recording his statement that Gurappa Naidu revealed that he was giving services to Jayadev.

Jayadev, who was the richest MP in the outgoing Lok Sabha with declared assets of Rs 683 crore, is the director of Amara Raja Group, known for its automotive battery brand Amaron.

The I-T officials also conducted searches at the residence of YSR Congress Party candidate from Guntur Lok Sabha constituency, Modugula Venugopala Reddy.

Condemning the raids on TDP leaders, Chandrababu Naidu had staged a sit-in during the election campaign, slamming the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre for misusing I-T and other central agencies to target TDP leaders.

A day before the polling, he also staged a sit-in in front of the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office in Amaravati over the I-T raids and transfer of state officials by the Election Commission.

Naidu questioned the I-T raids at a time when the model code of conduct was in force.

During a visit to the DMK headquarters in Chennai on Tuesday, Naidu said the searches were only targeted against those who were opposed to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

AP IT raids: Sivaji reacts angrily

0

Massive IT raids on corporate companies in AP came in for lots of criticism from TDP leaders and political analysts while BJP leaders welcomed and described the raids as the way to deal strictly with corruption and irregularities in various projects.

Hero-turned-activist Sivaji said the BJP is hell bent on damaging and destroying trade and commerce in newly created AP by launching IT raids on leaders and corporate companies.

He asked BJP top leadership to ‘encounter’ AP CM Chandrababu Naidu once and for all, instead of taking revenge against all the populations of AP for the sake of hurting and liquidating TDP.

Sivaji blamed four ‘durmaargulu’ (evil doers) responsible for the problems of AP people right now and one of these evil doers has been staying in Delhi for gathering information on AP leaders and companies to finally give instructions to IT officials to conduct raids.

The actor challenged BJP MP GVL Narasimha Rao to tour Telangana and face the people’s anger there by indulging in the sort of anti-region activities he was doing with AP right now.

He said that Friday’s raids were aimed at searching houses of several ministers but the TDP leaders remained alert and moved into safe zone, otherwise such raids would have happened creating a nation-wide sensation.

Sivaji said that BJP wanted to create AP raids as a sensation to divert the attention of all Indians and NRIs from the multi-crore Rafael jet fighters scandal which has potential to bring down BJP at the Centre.

AP Social Welfare Minister Nakka Anand Babu said the BJP’s IT raids exposed the level of degraded politics that party would stoop to and BJP was playing a dangerous mind game with the country’s polity by launching IT raids against political opponents.

Anand wondered why such raids were not being conducted against huge corporate giants at national level despite their names figuring in various multi-crore sandals frequently.

BJP MLC Somu Veerraju is now leading BJP criticism against TDP after reports of party floor leader Vishnu Kumar Raju shifting loyalties to TDP.

Veerraju asserted that TDP would be washed away in the floods of corruption and ill-gotten wealth in the 2019 elections and its leaders would gain nothing from claiming credit for Polaravam project which was actually funded by BJP government at the centre as it was a national project.
