    Back-to-back duds for Dil Raju

    1

Tollywood’s top producer Dil Raju had huge plans in Bollywood and he announced a series of films. He floated Dil Raju Productions and his wife Vygha Reddy has been overlooking the finances and other operations. His Bollywood debut film Jersey starring Shahid Kapoor bombed at the box-office. His second production HIT released yesterday and the response has been below average. The footfalls and the day one numbers are quite poor and Dil Raju delivered his second flop in Bollywood in a gap of three months.

Dil Raju is all set to remake Naandhi and the project was announced some time ago. There are a couple of other projects lined up and they are yet to be announced. Though he made no profits or losses through these films, his big Bollywood plans got disrupted. Both Jersey and HIT are made on decent budgets and there are stars, prominent technicians on board. Dil Raju is now extra cautious about his upcoming Bollywood films as he needs to bounce back to stand in the race.

Bunch of OTT Releases this Weekend

OTT turned out to be a parallel space for entertainment apart from the theatre experience for the Indian audience. Though it is bitter to hear, a section of the audience are not much interested to watch films in theatres ever since the coronavirus pandemic started. A bunch of films are gearing up for digital streaming this weekend. RRR is the biggest hit of the country in the recent times and the film is all set for digital streaming from May 20th. The film will be available on Zee5 in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam languages. The Hindi version will be available on Netflix from June 2nd.

Megastar Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan starrer ended up as one of the biggest duds in Telugu cinema. With the theatrical run coming to an end in its first week, the film is available on Amazon Prime from May 20th. Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur starrer Jersey too received poor reception in theatres and the film will be available on Netflix from May 20th. Apart from these biggies, Sree Vishnu’s recent outing Bhala Thandanana will be available on Disney Plus Hotstar from May 20th. Malayalam Superstar Mohanlal’s next offering 12th Man is heading for a direct digital release on May 20th on Disney Plus Hotstar. Drushyam fame Jeethu Joseph directed the film.

Bollywood reports the most Disastrous Eid

    1

The Covid-19 fear is nowhere found in the country and the normalcy returned back long ago. RRR and KGF: Chapter 2 had a sensational run across the North Indian market and reported huge numbers. But none of the Bollywood films reported decent openings or full run numbers this year. Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey started off on a disastrous note and the film fell flat on weekdays. Two biggies Runway 34 and Heropanti 2 released on Friday and the openings are quite poor. Runway 34 received a decent response and may do well over the weekend.

Heropanti 2 has been declared as the biggest flop in Tiger Shroff’s career. Bollywood filmmakers and analysts are left in shock by the opening figures of the recent biggies. This is the most disastrous Eid ever reported till date, told a top box-office analyst. The audience are not much interested to watch Bollywood biggies and the reason is a huge puzzle. KGF: Chapter 2 has been doing quite well even in its third week. The film is expected to have a super-strong weekend dominating the Bollywood biggies. Bollywood delivering disasters continues this week too.

Dil Raju’s Bollywood Plans badly disrupted

Successful Tollywood producer Dil Raju had grand plans for his Bollywood entry. He picked up Jersey and locked Gowtam Tinnanuri to direct the film. Shahid Kapoor came on to the board and the film is his immediate next release after a blockbuster like Kabir Singh. Allu Aravind and Aman Gill are the co-producers of Jersey. Dil Raju and his team were super confident about the film and they predicted massive openings for the film.

Jersey opened on a poor note and the weekend numbers are completely discouraging. The makers recovered the budget through the non-theatrical deals and they estimated that the film would fare exceptionally well at the ticket windows. But the audience are eager to watch mass entertainers in theatres during this season. KGF: Chapter 2 had an exceptional second weekend across the North Indian circuits.

Dil Raju also produced HIT with Rajkummar Rao in the lead role. The film is a crime thriller and it would release later this year. Dil Raju who had grand plans to make his Bollywood debut is now in shock with the opening numbers of Jersey. He will soon produce Naandhi and F2 in Hindi.

Bollywood prefers KGF: Chapter 2 over Jersey

    0

A special screening of Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey was held on the evening of Wednesday and the response was heart whelming. Positive reviews poured from the special screening but the film has been struggling to post decent numbers all over. KGF: Chapter 2 dominated Jersey all over and the film remained the first choice for the Bollywood audience. KGF: Chapter 2 collected three times more than Jersey on Friday and KGF: Chapter 2 is expected to have a super stronghold over the weekend.

Shahid Kapoor’s performance in Jersey is widely appreciated but the second half is packed with too much of cricket and the narration is quite slow. Considering the openings, it would be a tough road for Jersey. Gowtam Tinnanuri who directed the original directed the remake too. Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur played the lead roles. Dil Raju, Allu Aravind and Aman Gill produced Jersey.

Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey lands in more Troubles

    0

Nani’s Jersey is named as one of the finest films of Telugu cinema. Tollywood producer Dil Raju soon acquired the remake rights and locked Shahid Kapoor for the Hindi remake. Naga Vamsi who produced the original, Bollywood producer Aman Gill and Allu Aravind joined the project as co-producers. The film was the immediate next release of Shahid Kapoor after Kabir Singh which raked more than Rs 300 crores at the ticket windows. Dil Raju and his team were pretty confident of making more than Rs 100 crores profits before the release of Jersey.

The coronavirus pandemic altered the situation. The film got delayed by months and the makers had to wait for a comfortable release date. The wave of KGF: Chapter 2 pushed the release of Jersey once again and the makers announced that the film will hit the theatres on April 22nd. Young writer Rupesh Jaiswal filed a complaint that the concept of Jersey is copied. He said that he registered a script titled ‘The Wall’ with the Screenwriters Association. The court is expected to hear the issue today or tomorrow.

The writer claims that the Telugu version too is plagiarised as per his script that was registered in 2007. He filed a case on Jersey for infringement of copyright. Jersey is directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri and it featured Shahid Kapoor, Mrunal Thakur in the lead roles. The release of the film depends on the decision of the court.

Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey faces the heat from KGF

    0

KGF: Chapter 2 is gearing up for a record release and the pre-release sales are exceptional from North to South. Shahid Kapoor starrer Jersey is hitting the screens on the same day. Shahid Kapoor is pretty confident on the film and the team of Jersey waited for a theatrical release though Netflix offered a bomb for a direct OTT release. The advance bookings for Jersey are quite poor and it is clear that KGF: Chapter 2 will dominate the box-office. The makers of Jersey decided to push the release date considering the low ticket sales for the film.

Jersey will now hit the screens on April 22nd all over. The film is the remake of Telugu film Jersey and is directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri. Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapoor played other important roles in this sports drama. The stage is all set for KGF: Chapter 2 in all the languages. Vijay’s Beast is the other biggie heading for release this week.

Jersey Hindi Release: Dil Raju Vs Shahid Kapoor

    0

Tollywood’s top producer Dil Raju is also focused on Bollywood. He joined hands with Allu Aravind for the remake of Jersey. Shahid Kapoor is the lead actor and the film was initially planned for January 31st release. But considering the rise in the new coronavirus cases and the restrictions imposed, the makers pushed the release of the film. Dil Raju and Allu Aravind had huge hopes on the film and Jersey even happens to be the immediate next film of Shahid Kapoor after a blockbuster like Kabir Singh.

After things changed, Dil Raju is keen on a direct digital release and he initiated talks with Netflix. The offer too is quite convincing. But Shahid Kapoor is not much interested in a digital release and he wants Jersey to hit the theatres. He informed the makers that he is ready to slash down his remuneration in case if the film gets a huge delay. Dil Raju is trying hard to convince Shahid but the actor is strict on his stand. Shahid Kapoor is making his digital debut next year with Raj and DK’s project and this is one more reason for the actor sticking for a theatrical release for Jersey.

For now, he is strict on a theatrical release for Jersey. We have to wait to see if Dil Raju convinces Shahid or if he will wait for a proper theatrical release.

In 2020, the B’wood cricket movie moves to its next level

    0

Cricket seems to be returning in the mindspace of Bollywood filmmakers, with a few high-profile projects lined up for release next year.

In 2020, Ranveer Singh plays Kapil Dev in “’83”, Kabir Khan’s film about India’s historic victory at the cricket World Cup of 1983. Shahid Kapoor, after “Kabir Singh”, seems to have struck gold with remakes of Telugu hits. His next, “Jersey” is a Bollywood remake of Gowtham Tinnanuri’s Telugu film of the same name, and it narrates the story of a failed cricketer who decides to revive his career against all odds despite being in his late thirties. Then there is the Mithali Raj biopic, which stars Taapsee Pannu as the protagonist. A film titled “God Of Cricket” has also been announced on cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar’s birthday this year.

Sure, Bollywood has always been fascinated by cricket, which remains a religion in India. In the past, we have had “Lagaan”, “Iqbal”, “Patiala House”, “Dil Bole Hadippa”, “Jannat”, “Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii”, “M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story”, “Azhar” and “The Zoya Factor” among others. In the nineties, too, there was the odd attempt to cash in on the sport with Aamir Khan starring as a cricketing star in Dev Anand’s “Awwal Number”.

Still earlier, in the eighties, real-life cricketer Sandeep Patil (incidentally, among the heroes of the 1983 team that won World Cup) starred as a reel-life cricketer in a film called “Kabhi Ajnabi The” (1985) . Also, Kumar Gaurav — a teenybopper star of the era– played a cricketer in “All Rounder” (1984).

There is a difference between the upcoming stock of cricket movies and the older ones. In most cases, Bollywood films of the past that had cricket as a backdrop were only using the sport to unfold a formulaic story of romance, drama, melodrama, comedy and, at times, some action. Barring the odd “Iqbal” or biopics of Dhoni and Azhar, these films were not so much about cricket or cricketers.

The upcoming films on cricket and cricketers will also look for formula in the stories of cricket and cricketers, but in keeping with contemporary Bollywood trends, aim at doing so with a context that makes the game relevant to the plot.

That’s something that excites the audience these days. A quick scan of the welcome that the Mithali Raj biopic is seeing on social media ever since it was announced a while back tells you as much.

“Can’t wait already”, “your biopic will be a must watch”, “another cricket biopic, already excited for it” — are some of the comments left on Twitter earlier this month after Viacom18 Studio announced that actress Taapsee Pannu will be bringing the story of Mithali alive on the silver screen with a biopic titled “Shabaash Mithu”.

“It’s not just a biopic of a personality but a larger story on how Indian women cricket team rose to great heights and their battles against the odds. It’s also about the biases in our society, about the rising Indian women and their struggle,” Ajit Andhare, COO, Viacom18 Studios, told IANS.

Andhare was watching the multiple-Oscar nominated film of 2016, “Hidden Figures”, when the idea of his film dawned in his mind. ” ‘Hidden Figures’ tells the true story of African American women who helped the US win the space race. On reflection, it struck me that just like the African women’s exploits are not widely known, so are our women cricketers! And that when cricket is a religion in India. So I developed a story idea around this core and went about securing the life rights of Mithali Raj who both as captain and a feisty woman epitomises this irony,” he said.

“We then went about developing the screenplay and finally got it right after changing many a writers. After several iterations between me and our in-house team member we developed the final screenplay. Taapsee Pannu was the first choice for the role and it’s great that we got her nod immediately after the narration to her. Rahul Dholakia loved the script, shares this dream and is on board as director,” added Andhare.

Filmmaker Kabir Khan’s “’83”, on the other hand, will take the audience back to the time when Kapil Dev led the underdog Indian cricket team to a famous victory against the mighty West Indies in the final of the 1983 World Cup. “’83”, which features Ranveer Singh, Tahir Raj Bhasin and Ammy Virk, among others, is co-produced by Reliance Entertainment, Phantom Films and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment.

“’83’ is not just a film about cricket, it is about the human spirit and hope. Whether you are a cricket fan or not, the story will resonate with you. It is about men who won against all odds — a David versus Goliath story that will give everyone goosebumps,” Shibasish Sarkar, Group CEO, Reliance Entertainment, told IANS.

“India won Independence in 1947 but the ’83 World Cup win is our independence in sports. For us, ’83 is a story that needs to be told – a true story that placed India on the global cricketing map. The ’83 World Cup was a game-changer as it rewrote India’s cricketing history. We just want to bring this incredible story to the audience,” he added.

If sources are to be believed, filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has been approached with two films based on cricket. The first, a Fox Star film, aims at being a larger-than-life Lala Amarnath biopic that has been written by Piyush Gupta and Neeraj Singh. The second is a cricket story being written by Abhijat Joshi.

“Cricket is not just a game. In India, it’s a religion that unites people. The biting of the nails, the racing of the hearts – all of these are familiar to Indians who are the most passionate fans in the world of Cricket. We aim at telling stories that resonate with the masses,” said Sarkar.

Trade expert Vinod Mirani feels that Hindi filmmakers are making movies around cricket or sports in general as India is on a winning spree. “You can’t be telling stories of losers and expect them to run (at the box office),” he told IANS.

Actors are also enjoying telling stories of sports personalities. Angad Bedi, who played cricketer in this year’s film “The Zoya Factor” and the web series “Inside Edge 2”, shared: “I like to play a sportsperson. Their lives are extremely close to the lives that we (actors) lead. They are full of ups and downs. One day you are a hero, the next day, media and people put you down if you are not giving your best.”

So far he has played fictional characters, he wouldn’t mind featuring in a biopic. “I would love to do a biopic on a bowler like Zaheer Khan or Harbhajan Singh. I would love to see their struggles on screen,” said Angad.

Tollywood nosedives in first half of 2019 – Domestic half yearly report

Lack of big releases, not so big performance of those released and Tollywood nosedives in 2019. The 66 releases, year to date aggregated ₹355 crore share against ₹485 crore during the same time last year. That’s almost 25% down and even worse in real terms with lower taxation in the current period.

It was earlier mentioned in our Summer report, how lack of big releases led box office to suffer and that doesn’t look to improve anytime soon, at least not till release of Saaho, which if clicks, is set to do historic business.

The biggest hit of the year remains F2 while the biggest grosser is Mahesh Babu starrer Maharishi, who delivered a Hit after 4 years. There were in total 9 films that can be termed as successes, accruing to 13 per cent success rate, which is not great but not as terrible as the previous two year’s 11 per cent.

The half yearly classification are as follow:

    Jersey goes to Bollywood

Tollywood’s inspiring sports drama Jersey, which starred Nani in the lead, is going to be remade in Bollywood very soon. Popular Hindi filmmaker Karan Johar has reportedly bagged the remake rights for a fancy price and is planning to rope in a star cast for the Hindi version.

As hit Telugu films are drawing the attention of Hindi audience, Bollywood filmmakers are offering solid prices for remake rights and making good money there. Recently, the Hindi version of Arjun Reddy released and emerged as a smash hit. Karan Johar felt that the emotional narrative in Jersey will strike a chord with audience in North. He is on talks with Jersey director Gautham Tinnanuri to helm the Hindi version as well. The story will be slightly tweaked to suit the sensibilities of audience there.

The film narrates the story of an aged cricketer who pursues his dream of representing the country by finding a place in the national team. Nani’s emotional performance received appreciation from all quarters and the film collected good revenues at the Tollywood box office.

Gowtam Tinnanuri’s journey from post-graduate to a passionate filmmaker

    0

Young and talented Gowtam Tinnanuri is widely appreciated for his flawless writing and poetic narration in his movies Malli Raava and Jersey. His work in Jersey is receiving an outstanding response for his work. Born in Rajamundry, Gowtam Tinnanuri graduated in engineering and completed his MBA. Though he was passionate for cinema, he worked for a decent time in the corporate sector. At the right time, he called it a quit for his job to pursue his passion for cinema.

Gowtam Tinnanuri had no connections with industry and he never worked or assisted any director for a film. He took his time penned the script of Malli Raava and approached the film’s producer Rahul through a friend. After the film ended up as a decent hit, Gowtam Tinnanuri never looked back. He said that he has done enough homework before penning Jersey, a sports drama. He said that he would take a short break and spend time with his family and friends before starting his next project.
