Shah to meet Oscar winning Naatu Naatu team in Hyderabad

0

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will meet Oscar award winning team of Naatu Naatu song in Hyderabad on Sunday.

During his brief visit to Telangana, he will meet the artists associated with the award winning song from S.S. Rajamouli’s blockbuster RRR over high tea at Novotel Hotel near Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

Rajamouli, Music director M.M. Keeravani, lyricist Chandrabose, singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, choreographer Prem Rakshith, actors Junior NTR and Ram Charan are likely to be present during the meeting.

Last month, Naatu Naatu bagged the Oscar for Best Original Song to become the first Indian and Asian song to receive the coveted award.

After returning to India, Ram Charan along with his father Chiranjeevi had met Amit Shah in Delhi.

In August last year, Amit Shah had met Junior NTR at Novotel Hotel near Hyderabad Airport. The Union Minister has reportedly requested the meeting after he liked the actor’s performance in RRR.

The BJP leader is scheduled to meet the RRR team soon after landing at Rajiv Gandhi Airport around 4 p.m. He will then leave for Chevella near Hyderabad by road as part of Parliament Pravas Yojana.

Amit Shah will address a public meeting at Chevella the same evening. The BJP is making large scale arrangements for the meeting, seen as a part of the party’s preparations for Assembly elections in Telangana scheduled later this year.

Meanwhile, party’s state leadership is busy making a list of leaders from other parties who will be joining BJP in the presence of Amit Shah at Chevella meeting.

Former minister Jupally Krishna Rao and former MP Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy are likely to join BJP. They were recently suspended from Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) for anti-party activities.

The BJP is looking to woo many leaders from BRS and Congress to its ranks to consolidate itself in the run-up to the polls. Last week, AICC programmes implementation committee chairman Alleti Maheshwar Reddy joined the BJP.

Amit Shah’s visit to Hyderabad comes close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. During his visit on April 8, the Prime Minister had launched several developmental projects and also addressed a public meeting.

Upbeat after Modi’s visit, the state leadership of the party is drawing plans to invite him and Amit Shah to the state every month.

South Asian dancers fight for representation after ‘Naatu Naatu’ Oscar performance

Nearly a week after the Oscars, the disappointment of a missed opportunity still weighs heavily on the minds of some South Asian American dancers, who are setting out to ensure it never happens again.

Many in the South Asian dance community were dismayed by the astonishing dearth of South Asian representation in the ‘Naatu Naatu’ performance at Sunday’s Academy Awards.

While singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava were on hand to perform their hit tune from Tollywood smash ‘RRR’, which made history for India that night by winning Best Original Song, they were not joined on stage by a single dancer of South Asian heritage, reported Variety.

Especially when, 14 years ago, they nailed it with the staging of A.R. Rahman’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ hit ‘Jai Ho’ at the 2009 Oscars as part of a widely celebrated four-minute medley.

“(The 2009 Oscars) had Indian singers and it was a multi-racial group of dancers and musicians,” explained Shilpa Dave, an assistant professor of media studies at the University of Virginia who specialises in the history of representations of race and gender in the media.

“They were really showing that music has this global force. That’s why people didn’t have an issue at that time.”

While Sunday night did mark a historic turning point for India, which also won Best Documentary Short for Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga’s ‘The Elephant Whisperers’, the glaring absence of South Asian performers on Hollywood’s biggest stage was the “last straw” for dancers like Achinta S. McDaniel, reports showbiz.com.

“Some people say, ‘just be happy with what we got,’ and that’s part of [the problem] – this idea of just accepting the scraps that are thrown to you,” McDaniel, the founder and artistic director of the Los Angeles-based Dance Company, told Variety.

“Just be happy an Indian song was nominated (and won). Don’t be mad about the overwhelming racism that appeared in the performance.”

McDaniel’s agent put her forward to serve as an associate consultant for the performance two weeks before the Oscars, but her rep was told that the AMPAS-selected choreographers Tabitha and Napoleon D’uomo, the Los Angeles-based duo known as NappyTabs, had already hired their team.

“(Equity is) a big part of what I’m interested in, and this has galvanised so many of my colleagues in the field,” said McDaniel.

“Now it’s enough. This is the last straw.”

McDaniel is hosting a Zoom on Saturday for South Asians in the dance community to unpack the events of the Oscars and plan ahead for a South Asian Summit this summer – an event she hopes to stage in conjunction with national organisation Dance/USA’s annual conference.

“This really lit a fire,” said McDaniel.

“So many people are joining this Zoom so we can start to make an actual change. It’s been too long that we’ve been quiet.”

Vikas Arun, a New York-based dancer and teacher specialising in forms of Western and Indian rhythmic and percussive dance, told Variety there have also been conversations this week about building a cross-functional advocacy group that can rally on behalf of South Asian entertainers in moments of crisis.

Dave, who authored the 2013 book ‘Indian Accents: Brown Voice and Racial Performance in American Television and Film’, agrees the “next step” in the conversation is to further interrogate the advocacy of South Asian entertainers.

“It’s about thinking of representation and advocacy for not just directors, writers and actors, but also performers on the larger scale as well,” said Dave. “I think dancers have been left out of this conversation. So when we’re looking at casting agencies and talent agencies, (we need to ask) where are the agents that are advocating to the establishment?”

According to talent such as Ramita Ravi, another professional dancer and choreographer whose agent put her forward for the Academy Awards, situations like the Oscars performance “unfortunately happen all the time.”

Interestingly, five days on from the awards, there still remains some confusion about how the production transpired in the first place. It was initially thought that ‘RRR’ actors NTR Jr. and Ram Charan would perform the dance themselves, but Oscars producer Raj Kapoor detailed in an AMPAS blog that the actors declined, as they weren’t comfortable doing so with the time constraints.

As such, their characters were represented on stage by Lebanese Canadian dancer Billy Mustapha and American dancer Jason Glover, whom many wrongly assumed was of South Asian heritage.

One source told Variety that AMPAS then intended to fly over dancers from India to support the performance, but their work visas fell through, prompting NappyTabs to hire their own dancers.

While a source close to the production said AMPAS tried to ensure the original team from India was looped in on every creative decision, a team that included the film’s public relations team, S.S. Rajamouli’s son Karthikeya Rajamouli, ‘RRR’ producers and composer M.M. Keeravaani, the outrage at the resulting performance also highlights the divergence in what representation means for nationals versus those who are part of a diaspora.

“For many South Asian Americans in the U.S., we were born and raised in America and feel a very large sense of belonging here,” explained Ravi.

“For other generations, and especially immigrants or folks living in India, it’s a bit of a different equation – they might be excited to be invited to the table, while the diaspora wants to be part of building the table. In that way, I think the idea of representation sits very differently across the diaspora.”

Dave added: “The Indian cinema industry is the largest in the world, and when you’re coming from that background and environment, you don’t see the injustices that are happening in the diaspora and in Hollywood. So (the ‘RRR’ team) was thrilled to win an Oscar – and rightly so.”

But for those in the diaspora, representation matters greatly, said Dave.

Oscars 2023: ‘Naatu Naatu’ win has father-son duo sharing Oscar glory

0

It’s a Monday that India will not forget in a hurry. It’s even more special for the father-son duo of music director M.M. Keeravani and playback singer Kaala Bhairava, who have worked on ‘Naatu Naatu’ which made history by winning an Oscar for the Best Original Song award.

While Keeravani has composed the music for the iconic song, his son Kaala Bhairava has lent his voice for the song, along with singer Rahul Sipligunj.

The 95th Oscar Awards show featured both of them, albeit at different points of time. The audience at the Dolby Auditorium in Los Angeles had the opportunity to listen to both, father and son on Monday morning, Indian Time.

Kaala Bhairava mesmerised the Oscars audience with his live rendition of ‘Naatu Naatu’ on stage. A little later, Keeravani got on stage to receive his award, he crooned a take-off on an old Carpenters’ number.

Keeravani is a well-known name in Tollywood, Bollywood, and Kollywood, while his son Kaala Bhairava has been making a name for himself as a playback singer.

‘Naatu Naatu’ picturised on Ram Charan and NTR Jr from the film ‘RRR’ made India proud again as it won the Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards.

Music composer M.M. Keeravaani said on receiving the honour: “Thank you Academy. I grew up listening to the carpenter here I am at the Oscars. There was only one wish on my mind… So was Rajamouli’s and my family… ‘RRR’, pride of every Indian. Thank you.”

What are LA punters betting on? ‘Naatu Naatu’ and ‘The Elephant Whisperers’

0

The best places to check out for which way the mood is swinging at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, or just the Academy, this Oscars season, are the two Los Angeles natives — ‘Variety’, which has been reporting on Hollywood even before the Oscars were invented, and the ‘Los Angeles Times’ (LAT).

And both have given their votes in favour of “Naatu Naatu”, the M.M. Keeravani-composed hit number from “RRR”, for Best Original Song and Guneet Monga and Kartiki Gonsalves’s Netflix production, “The Elephant Whisperers”, for the Best Documentary Short.

Whereas LAT is categorical in its thumbs up for “Naatu Naatu”, ‘Variety’ hedges its bet. “The divas (in other words, Rihanna and Lady Gaga) don’t have much of a chance against ‘RRR’ and its joyous dance,” LAT proclaims.

‘Variety’, however, points to an imponderable: the effect of Rihanna’s spellbinding performance at Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on this past February 12.

“This race is closer than people may be aware of,” writes ‘Variety’. “Naatu Naatu from ‘RRR’ is still considered the favourite, but Rihanna’s Super Bowl performance helped the ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ campaign. Also, I think many ballots with Angela Bassett as supporting actress are likely to have a ‘Lift Me Up’ as well.”

‘Variety’ added: “The same could be said for Lady Gaga with ‘Hold My Hand’ from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, which has been nominated for best picture. Lady Gaga, who’s not performing, could also factor into a down-the-line vote for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and David Byrne for ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.”

Still, it concludes with a ‘Will Win’ and ‘Should Win’ for ‘Naatu Naatu’, compared with the ‘Could Win’ for ‘Lift Me Up’.

On “The Elephant Whisperers”, the jury is still out because of the lobbying by Malala Yusufzai, Taliban victim, human rights campaigner and film producer, in favour of “Stranger at the Gate”, the story of an Afghan refugee named Bibi Bahrami and members of her little Indiana mosque, who come face to face with Richard ‘Mac’ McKinney, a US Marine who has secret plans to bomb their community centre.

“First rule of Oscar prognostication: Don’t pick against a movie about orphaned elephants,” says LAT. ‘Variety’ is more careful before also voting in favour of “The Elephant Whisperers”.

“Predicting the shorts is always very unpredictable, but this year is in overdrive,” ‘Variety’ notes. “Netflix has two movies in the running — ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ and ‘The Martha Mitchell Effect’ — with the former tracking very well with voters.”

We doubt if the story of the wife of Richard Nixon’s Attorney General, John Mitchell, who is remembered for her frank public comments and interviews at the peak of the Watergate scandal, get past a heart-warming tale of an indigenous couple named Bomman and Belli, who are entrusted with raising an orphaned baby elephant named Raghu, and their adorable relationship in the majestic setting of the Mudumalai National Park, Tamil Nadu.

But “Stranger at the Gate” has formidable backing. Malala, who, incidentally, now counts Meghan Markle and Priyanka Chopra among her friends, “was on the circuit in a big way for ‘Stranger at the Gate’, which could be the one that pushes it forward,” ‘Variety’ points out, adding: “The heartwarming feelings from ‘How Do You Measure a Year’ (which is about a father-daughter relationship) also struck a few chords.”

After mulling over the possibilities, however, ‘Variety’ concludes: “Flipping a coin in favour of Netflix’s love for animals.”

Seeing them again in ‘Once Upon a Time In Hollywood’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ man, they don’t age. They are the same. ‘Naato Naato’, Telugu pride and its first flag-bearer, the original NTR

0

It was history repeating itself, this time neither as farce, nor as tragedy, when Andhra politicians invoked Telugu pride while celebrating the ‘RRR’ song ‘Naatu Naatu’ getting the Golden Globe for Best Original Score.

It was the grandfather of NTR Jr, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, the Telugu superstar of his time and the original NTR, who became the first non-Congress chief minister of Andhra Pradesh in 1983, riding on the powerful slogan of Telugu Vari Atma Gauravam (or Telugu people’s self-respect). He was the supreme leader of the Telugu Desam Party, which is now helmed by his son-in-law, Chandrababu Naidu.

The ‘Naato Naato’ win was a booster dose for this ‘self-respect’, which NTR (the original) kept drumming home during his historic Chaitanya Ratham marathon mass contact movement across the state, which saw him covering 75,000 km on his remodelled Chevrolet van.

And guess who accompanied him throughout this criss-crossing of the then unified Andhra Pradesh? It was NTR Jr’s father, Nandamuri Harikrishna, an actor who started his career playing the baby Lord Krishna in NTR’s 1967 mythological classic drama, ‘Krishnavataram’. Harikrishna eventually got elected as an MLA, became a minister under NTR and also served as Rajya Sabha MP. He died in a car crash in 2018.

NTR Jr is Harikrishna’s son from his second wife, Shalini, a Kannadiga from Kundapur in the Udupi district of Karnataka.

The other star who shared screen space with NTR Jr, Ram Charan, also comes with a family history that, like everything else in Tollywood, is intertwined with that of the NTR clan. Although Ram Charan’s father, Telugu ‘Mega Star’ Chiranjeevi, has been a steadfast Congressman (he became India’s Tourism Minister under the stewardship of Manmohan Singh), he had great respect for NTR.

On May 28, 2020, on the occasion of NTR’s 97th birth anniversary, Chiranjeevi tweeted a throwback picture of him with the late former chief minister and Telugu icon with a message in Telugu, which when translated read: “The manliness of the Telugu race, the self-respect of the Telugu people. A memory that will never fade in the heart of the Telugu soil. The glory of Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao is ajaramaram (death defying).”

Chiranjeevi acted in the NTR film ‘Tirugu Leni Manishi’ in 1981. And it may seem pre-ordained that his son, Ram Charan, would be seen in action together with NTR’s grandson in a movie that has established a new milestone in Telugu cinema. And Pawan Kalyan, Chiranjeevi’s younger brother and founder of the Jana Sena Party, is in the news for warming up politically to Chandrababu Naidu and the Telugu Desam Party.

Of course, Chiranjeevi has had nasty political spats with NTR’s sixth son, the superstar and popular talk show host Nandamuri Balakrishna (better known as NBK), who also is the TDP MLA representing Hindupur, which had voted for NTR three times in succession since 1985, before sending NTR Jr’s father, Harikrishna, to the Assembly in 1996.

Hindupur has remained very much a TDP pocket borough since 1985, despite Andhra Pradesh moving back to the Congress under YSR (Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy) and then into the hands of his son and present Chief Minister, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

NBK and Chiranjeevi have publicly kissed and made up, but the megastar doesn’t see eye to eye with actor-producer-YSRCP leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Mohan Babu.

Their differences overshadowed the 2021 elections to Tollywood’s powerful trade body, Movie Artists Association (MAA), when Chiranjeevi put his weight behind Prakash Raj for president against Vishnu Manchu, Mohan Babu’s son, who eventually won the bitterly fought race.

Talking about the intertwined world of Tollywood, it was Mohan Babu who produced NTR’s last movie, the 1993 blockbuster ‘Major Chandrakanth’.

Finally, one more NTR connection that begs to find a mention. The late TDP leader and chief minister was very keen on starring in the biopic of Alluri Sitarama Raju, the freedom fighter after whom Ram Charan’s character in ‘RRR’ is modelled, but the role in the 1974 film went to another Telugu superstar, Krishna, who passed away on November 15, 2022.

NTR was said to be quite upset about it, but Krishna, whose sons Ramesh and Mahesh Babu are carrying on his legacy, was a formidable actor, although his dalliance with politics, as a Congressman under Rajiv Gandhi, was cut short by the ascendancy of the TDP.
