MEIL to supply 600 free oxygen cylinders to hospitals in Telangana, Andhra

0

Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) has come forward to augment supply of oxygen by 35 lakhs litres per day in Covid-hit Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

The company will be offering free supply of medical oxygen B type cylinders free of cost to match the increasing number of Covid patients who are in dire need of oxygen. It has submitted its proposal to the Telangana government.

MEIL is planning to supply 500 to 600 oxygen cylinders per day with each cylinder having a capacity of 7,000 litres. The total quantum of supply of oxygen thus will be around 35,00,000 litres.

MEIL has received request to refill oxygen cylinders from Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (50 cylinders), Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital (200), Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences (100) and Hyderabad Care Hi-tech hospital (50). These hospitals have augmented their Covid bed strength based on the spurt in cases.

On the other hand, MEIL, with the technical support of DRDO, is planning to construct 30-40 oxygen generation plants. Each plant can generate 150-1000 litres per minute based on the technology of on-board oxygen generation used in fighter planes.

Director DRDO Col. B.S. Rawat has appointed senior scientist Raghavendra Rao to coordinate the initiative.

MEIL is currently manufacturing a 30 metric tonnes per day Cryogenic Oxygen Liquefaction Plant and the same will be installed and commissioned at ITC Bhadrachalam by May 13. The cryogenic Oxygen will then be converted into usable liquid oxygen for medical purposes at the MEIL facilities.

Sources say that if required by the state governments, MEIL is ready to import 2 – 3 cryogenic oxygen tanks from its own unit in Spain which will help in the sourcing and movement of liquid oxygen.

‘Missing’ TRS leader arrested in Andhra

2

Telangana police on Saturday arrested Peddapalli Zilla Parishad chairman Putta Madhu, whose name had figured in the murder of a lawyer couple and was ‘missing’ for nearly a week.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader was picked up by Ramagundam town police in Bhimavaram in Andhra Pradesh. He was being brought to Ramagundam.

The development also assumes significance as he is said to be a follower of Eatala Rajender who was dropped from state cabinet by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao early this week over allegations of encroaching farmers’ land.

With the government ordering probe into land dealings by the former minister, Madhu who reportedly had business relations with Rajender went missing.

There were also reports that he was in Hyderabad and tried to meet the chief minister.

It was immediately not clear if he was arrested for questioning in the murder case or in connection with probe against Rajender.

Madhu’s name had cropped up during the investigations into the murder of Gattu Vaman Rao and Nagamani.

The high court advocate couple was brutally hacked to death in broad daylight on February 17 this year.

Before succumbing to his injuries, Vaman Rao had taken the name of Kunta Srinivas, a local TRS leader. Police had arrested Srinivas and Madhu’s nephew Bittu Seenu

The family of the deceased couple alleged that Madhu was behind the murder as they were fighting controversial cases, including a disproportionate assets case against Madhu.

Madhu’s name had surfaced during the investigations after an audio clip came to light in which Srinivas was heard speaking to person who sounded like a contract killer, by taking the name of Madhu several times.

However, the Zilla Parishad chairman was not arrested. Vaman Rao’s father had recently lodged a fresh complaint with the police, seeking a probe into Madhu’s role in the twin murders.

Telangana reverts to Covid bulletins in evening

1

After nearly 10 months, the health department in Telangana reverted to the earlier practice of issuing daily Covid media bulletin in the evening.

Director of public health and family welfare Dr G. Srinivasa Rao said the bulletin will be issued in the evening along the daily press briefing by him and director of medical education K. Ramesh Reddy.

After the pandemic broke out last year, the health authorities were issuing daily bulletins in the evening. However, towards July end they started issuing bulletins in the morning, giving comprehensive data of 24-hour period as directed by the Telangana High Court.

The evening bulletin will cover the 24-hour period from 5.30 p.m. the previous day.

According to first bulletin issued Friday as per the revised timing, the state reported 5,559 new Covid cases and 41 deaths.

The cumulative case tally has gone up to 4,87,199 while death toll mounted to 2,666.

The state continued to see more recoveries than the new cases. A total of 8,061 people recovered from the virus, taking the cumulative number to 4,13,225.

The recovery rate improved further to 84.81 per cent against the national average of 81.9 per cent. The number of active cases also came down to 71,308.

The authorities tested 65,375 samples during the 24-hour period. With this the state has so far conducted 1,34,88,498 tests. The samples tested per million population increased to 3,62,399.

The daily count of cases in Greater Hyderabad declined to below 1,000. The state capital reported 984 cases. Rangareddy and Medchal Malkajgiri adjoining Hyderabad reported 457 and 372 cases respectively.

Warangal Urban reported 296 cases followed by 208 in Nalgonda, 201 in Siddipet, 201 in Karimnagar and 200 in Khammam.

Srinivasa Rao hoped that the current wave of Covid pandemic is likely to subside in the next two to three weeks due to people’s adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviour and the government’s containment efforts.

The government has extended the night curfew till May 15 and also imposed restrictions on gatherings.

The director of public health appealed to citizens not to let down their guard, postpone functions, avoid gatherings, wear double mask when outside and single inside homes.

Telangana to give only second dose of Covid vaccine from May 8

0

In view of shortage of the Covid-19 vaccines, health authorities in Telangana on Friday decided to vaccinate only those awaiting their second dose.

From Saturday, vaccine will be given to only those due for second dose, Director of Public Health Dr G. Srinivasa Rao told reporters. This arrangement will continue till May 12. However, there will be no vaccination on Sunday.

All persons eligible for second dose will be permitted to take the vaccine at government vaccination centres by spot registration by showing their certificate of partial vaccination.

The eligibility period for taking second dose is six weeks for Covishield and four weeks for Covaxin from the date of taking the first dose.

Rao pointed out that there are more than 11 lakh people in the state who are due for second dose. However, the state currently has only 3.74 lakh doses. He assured the people due for second dose not to be worried as the state expects another 3 lakh doses by May 15.

In the light of low allocation of vaccine till May 15 (4.69 lakh of Covishield and 2.16 lakh of Covaxin) and in order to optimally utilise the available doses, the special drive has been launched to cover the people who are eligible for second dose, he said.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who reviewed the Covid vaccination programme, took note of meagre allocation of Covid vaccine to the state. He spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to provide minimum 2 lakh doses per day.

Srinivasa Rao said vaccination for 18-44 age group will be launched only after receiving sufficient supplies.

He appealed to people to avoid public gatherings till the curve turns flat, and wear a double mask during travel and single mask at home as the virus is airborne.

Warangal, Khammam get women Mayors, Deputy Mayors

0

All major Municipal Corporations in Telangana now have women Mayors and Deputy Mayors as the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on Friday entrusted the key posts in Warangal and Khammam to women.

Women corporators of the TRS were unanimously elected as Mayors and Deputy Mayors of Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) and Khammam Municipal Corporation (KMC).

Former MP and TRS women wing President Gundu Sudha Rani was elected mayor of GWMC, the second biggest municipal corporation in the state after the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Though the post was reserved for BC/general candidate, the TRS choose a woman leader as the mayor.

Ponukollu Neeraja was named as Mayor of the Khammam Municipal Corporation. The post was reserved for women.

Interestingly, the TRS gave the posts of Deputy Mayors in both Warangal and Khammam to Muslim women — Rizwana Shameem in Warangal and Shaik Fathima Zohra in Khammam.

With this, all major corporations in the state have women as Mayors and Deputy Mayors. In February, Gadwal Vijayalaxmi and Srilatha Reddy were elected as Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Greater Hyderabad respectively.

The TRS leadership declared the names of Mayors and Deputy Mayors of the GWMC and the KMC through sealed covers. Ministers in charge for the elections announced the names at the meetings of newly-elected corporators.

Elections for Chairpersons and Deputy Chairpersons of five municipalities were also held on Friday. Women were elected Chairpersons of Siddipet, Jadcherla and Kothur municipalities. The posts of chairpersons of Nakrekal and Atchampet municipalities were not reserved for women. The posts of three Deputy Chairpersons also went to women.

The TRS had made a clean sweep of elections held for seven urban local bodies on April 30. The results were declared on May 3. The ruling party not only retained power in these ULBs but also won enough seats to easily win the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the two municipal corporations and Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson in the five municipalities.

KCR: We will not impose lockdown in Telangana

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao has clarified that lockdown would not be imposed in the Telangana state. He said the imposition of lockdown would make the life stand still and would lead to total collapse of the financial system. The CM took this decision after examining the situation in the states where the lockdown was imposed and where the positive cases have not come down as well as taking into account the past experiences. The CM spoke to Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi over phone about the supply of the required vaccines, Oxygen and Remdesivir and urged him to supply the same immediately. The CM brought to the notice of the PM that the Oxygen supplies allocated to the state from Sriperambadur and in Tamil Nadu and Bellary in Karnataka have not been supplied so far. Since Hyderabad became a medical Hub, people from the bordering states are also depending on Hyderabad for the medical treatment. The CM explained that since people from Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka are coming to Hyderabad for the treatment there is alarming increase of burden on the city. The CM told the PM that there is a 50 per cent more Corona patients than the Telangana people are coming to Hyderabad for treatment it had an adverse impact on the availability of Oxygen, vaccines and injections like the Remdesivir. The CM said as on date there is availability of 440 MT of Oxygen per day and it should be increased 500 MT per day. The availability of Remdesivir is only 4900 and it should be increased to 25000. He said the Centre had so far gave only 50 Lakh doses of vaccine and it should also be increased based on the needs of the state. The CM requested the PM to ensure the supply of 2 to 2.5 Lakh doses of vaccine per day and it should be supplied immediately.

Meanwhile, on the request made by the CM and instructions from the PM, Union Minister Sri Piyush Goyal spoke to the CM. Sri Piyush Goyal assured the CM that all the requests made by the CM would be fulfilled and action would be taken to supply adequate quantities of vaccine, Oxygen and Remdesivir would be supplied to the State. The Union Minister said Oxygen would be supplied from the Eastern states instead of TN and Karnataka states.

The CM held a high-level review meeting at Pragathi Bhavan here on Thursday on the situation arising out of the Corona.

The CM made an in-depth review about the Corona situation prevailing in the State. The CM discussed at length on how much Oxygen supply is available and how much is required? Availability of the vaccines, supply of the Remdesivir and how much is required for the state’s needs? Availability of beds with Oxygen etc., The CM spoke to the companies manufacturing the Remdesivir and asked them to increase the supply. He said, as on date there are 9500 beds with Oxygen are available in Government hospitals and wanted 5000 more to be added within a week all over the state. The CM has instructed the CS to make arrangements to airlift 12 Cryogenic tankers from China for the better Oxygen supply at a cost of Rs one crore each. The CM asked the CS to make these arrangements immediately. He said that 5980 Covid outpatient centres are created all over the State in PHCs, Community hospitals and area hospitals and wanted people to utilise the services. The officials informed the CM that in the state, so far 1.56 Lakh positive cases were reported and of this 1.30 Lakh 85 per cent have recovered. The CM instructed the medical health officials to brief media every day evening on the Corona situation. He wanted Director of Health to take this responsibility. The CM also instructed that all the information and data on the number of positive cases, how may recovered, how many are there in the home quarantine, how many are getting treated in the government hospitals, how many are there in the private hospitals etc., on the public domain. The CM wanted that a special officer should be appointed to monitor the measures to contain the virus spread in the state. The CM instructed Principal Secretary (Finance) Sri Ramakrishna Rao to release the funds required for the medical and health department immediately. He also wanted a special officer to be appointed to release the funds. The CM instructed that all those who took the first dose of the vaccine should be given the second dose on priority.

The CM who reviewed the availability of Oxygen had also made attempts to increase its supply. The CM spoke to IICT Director Sri Chandrashekhar over phone and asked him about the measures taken to increase the Oxygen reserves. Based on their suggestions, the CM instructed the medical and health officials to purchase 500 Oxygen enrichers. The CM suggested that more number of enrichers should be added immediately and wanted setting up of system that generated Oxygen in a short time. He wanted officials from the Panchayat Raj, Municipal department to spray Sodium Hypochloride to clean the environment. He wanted public representatives to become the partners in the programme.

Covid medical Kits for every household

The CM urged the people to utilise the Covid Kits supplied by the government. He said the Kits would be provided through Asha workers and ANMs. Along with the medicines, there will be pamphlet on the precautions to be taken for the curtailment of Corona.

The CM did an in-depth analysis on why lockdown should not be imposed in the State.

Speaking on the occasion, the CM said,” There is no use imposing lockdown. Since Telangana state is the most happening state in the country, 25 to 30 Lakh workers from other states are here working. We have seen how their lives were adversely impacted by the lockdown we imposed during the first wave. If they are dislocated, they will not come back. Moreover, there is bumper yield of the Paddy in the State. Paddy is stocked in 6144 procurement centres in the state and they are weighing the Paddy. Purchasing Paddy is not a simple process. There is a chain system involved from bottom to the top. There is involvement of the IKP Centre incharges, Hamalis, workers, transport staff, workers at the rice mills, FCI godowns etc., There are lakhs of people involved in the process. What will happen to the workers who came from other states and working in the rice Mills? What will happen to them if there is lockdown? If the workers go helter skelter how would one get them back? If the Paddy is not purchased where will the farmer go? There is a danger of the entire Paddy purchasing process coming to a standstill if the lockdown is imposed. And it may lead to crisis. At the same time, we cannot stop the supply of essential commodities, milk, vegetables, fruits, emergency medical services, deliveries, sanitation and other such emergency and essential services. We are also importing from other states, vaccines, medicines, injections etc., they will be effected if the lockdown is imposed. If the lockdown is imposed, the government will become responsible for creating a panic situation. Hence the government is not ready it impose lockdown. However, we will identify the areas where the cases are more and declare them as Micro level Containment zones and take the required measures,” the CM explained.

The CM also said that if the industries are closed down lakhs of people lose their livelihood and working class like the cab drivers would be in dire situation. Leave aside Corona; the entire economic situation will collapse leading a deep crisis. Hence the government has decided not to impose any lockdown,” the CM said.

The CM also urged people to take part in the fight against the Corona voluntarily. He said only through united efforts by everyone that victory over the Pandemic can be achieved. He wanted intellectuals and other scholars to educate people in this regard. The CM congratulated the medical and health department staff for rendering their services putting their lives at stake. Doctors, Nurses, Asha workers, ANMs and other medical staff are appreciated by the CM for their selfless services. The CM said that the reports suggested the intensity of the second wave of Corna would come down by May 15. He wanted people to take precautionary measures to curtail the virus and they asked them to exercise restrain by themselves. He advised people not to move in crowd, more than 100 should not attend the marriage ceremonies, frequent use of sanitisers, wearing masks and maintaining physical distance should be observed at all times. Such precautions would only prevent the virus spread, the CM said.

Andhra girl gets new lease of life with K. Kavitha’s help

3

An 11-year-old girl from Andhra Pradesh got a new lease of life thanks to timely help provided by Telangana legislator K. Kavitha, daughter of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

Gnapika, a resident of Kandukur village in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh and suffering from a severe C-spine injury, was battling for her life after being stuck in the push and pull of geographical boundaries of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

After multiple failed attempts from her home state, a cry for help was made on Twitter on April 21 to save the life of Gnapika. Kavitha, who was marked in the tweet, wasted no time and immediately started the process of saving the previous life.

Kavitha, known for her philanthropic efforts – be it her initiative for migrants or those stuck abroad or helping and supporting families and individuals in distress, immediately reached out to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad seeking their medical intervention. On Saturday, Gnapika underwent her first surgery.

Kavitha also extended financial support to the family of the girl and took full responsibilities of her surgery.

8 lions test Covid +ve at Zoo Park Hyderabad

1

The lions, the kings of the animal world, are now no exception to Coronavirus. Over eight lions at the Zoo Park, Hyderabad, have fallen extremely ill for the past few days. When their samples were tested, the results showed that all the eight lions were suffering from the deadly virus infection. The Zoo authorities started Covid-related safety measures only yesterday upon receiving reports that the virus transmission was possible from human visitors to the lions.

It was because of that information that tests were conducted on the lions immediately. Now, the infected lions were separated from the other lions and kept in total isolation from the rest of the animals. Shocked and surprised at the new development, the Zoo authorities began preventive measures at all the animal enclosures.

There was a greater concern about the health of the lions since the second wave of infections was indeed proving to be more deadly and contagious than expected. The most contagious N-440K mutant was also wreaking havoc in Telangana. The scientists were saying this variant would be over 10 to 10,000 times more deadly if neglected.

The veterinary doctors at the Zoo Park have launched immediate treatment for the infected lions. Some of the lions were stated to be badly ill following the infection.

As BJP and Modi weaken, will KCR revive Federal Front now?

TRS chief and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao was more than happy on Sunday (today) after the counting trends in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala clearly indicated the downfall of BJP and more so Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

There was a buzz in TRS circles that KCR tracked counting trends in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala more than Nagarjunasagar Assembly bypoll as he was very much confident of TRS victory in Nagarjunasagar.

Speculations were rife that KCR was overjoyed after it became clear that Mamata Banerjee, MK Stalin and Pinarayi Vijayan are going to become the CMs of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

This is because all the three leaders are close to KCR whom KCR met in 2018 and 2019 as part of his efforts to forge a Federal Front against BJP and Modi.

However, KCR became silent after Modi became PM for second term with an absolute majority in April 2019 Lok Sabha polls and Modi emerged more stronger.

Fearing stronger Modi and BJP, KCR again confined to Telangana politics since then.

However, with BJP and Modi receiving a jolt in election in big states West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, KCR is now keen to revive his Federal Front from where he left in 2019.

KCR feels that the time is right now to strike back at weaker Modi and BJP.

KCR may shift his focus to national politics yet again and make his son KT Rama Rao as CM of Telangana anytime soon, say party sources.

Deaths due to lack of oxygen insult to nation: Etela Rajender

0

Telangana Health Minister E. Rajender said on Thursday that deaths of Covid-affected people due to oxygen shortage is a great insult to the nation.

It is a shame that people are dying due to lack of oxygen through the Centre has the military, railways and all the required machinery at its disposal, he said.

Addressing a news conference, Rajender said deaths due to lack of oxygen may make people lose faith in the government. He demanded the Centre supply oxygen to states and ensure production of Covid vaccines on war footing.

He said the officials told him that shortage of oxygen may lead to chaos. He said that if the Centre had no money, it can ask states to bear the cost but it must fulfill oxygen requirements of all states.

Slamming the Centre for keeping everything including vaccine, oxygen, Remdisivir under its control and blaming the states for Covid-19 surge, he criticised the manner in which it is allotting Covid medical resources. He termed as irresponsible the statements by the leaders of Central government that states are not using allotted resources or that states are not bothered.

The Health Minister though Telangana demanded 600 tonnes of oxygen as the second wave is expected to peak in mid-May, the Centre has allotted only 360 tonnes. He demand that the allocation of the source of oxygen should be nearer to the state.

Rajender said while the Centre had warned about second wave, it had not mentioned that it would be so severe. “If you had expected the severity of it, you wouldn’t have held elections in several states. How would you give permission to the Kumbh Mela,” he asked.

Stating that Telangana has around 1.75 crore people in 18-44 years age group, he said the state need 3.5 crore Covid vaccine doses for them.

He reiterated that the Centre should completely provide the vaccines to all states. The Centre should rework its strategy on vaccines and take states into confidence, he said.

Rajender said people in home isolation or institution isolation were suggested to undergo blood tests every 3-4 days to know if the patients are slipping into critical stage.

The blood tests would be conducted at 19 Telangana Diagnostic Centres across the state, and start in 2-3 days.

Congress party’s Telangana unit president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Thursday demanded that the state government include treatment of Covid-19 under Arogyasri, the health insurance scheme for the poor.

Reddy, who has been infected by Covid-19, posted a video message on Twitter from the hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

He said the government should not forget its responsibility to take care of the people who are suffering due to the pandemic and lack of beds, oxygen and medicines.

“I am deeply pained that lakhs of my brothers and sisters suffering from Covid-19 have been abandoned and rendered helpless due to the apathy of the government,” said Reddy.

The Congress leader said he was receiving phone calls from many people who are unable to get beds in hospital and are facing shortage of oxygen and Remdisivir.

He stated that a control room set up by the party’s state unit under the directions of AICC incharge Manickam Tagore is actively coming to the aid of Covid-19 patients in Telangana. “We shall do our best to assist our citizens & overcome this second wave,” he tweeted.

“I thank doctors, nurses, frontline health & sanitation workers who have been working in grueling conditions to save lives of Covid-19 patients. Special mention to the Congress party volunteers who are tirelessly helping patients & their families. We shall win this together.”

The MP thanked party workers and well wisher who sent their good wishes to him. He hoped that he would be out of the hospital in 2 or 3 days.

Reddy had tweeted on April 24 that pneumonia caused by Covid was detected when he got a CT lung scan done. He advised people who have been in contact with him to get tested. “Both rapid & RT PCR tests failed to detect Covid in my case. Urge you to go for lung CT scan if symptoms persist despite negative RTPCR/Rapid antigen tests.”

TS High Court fires on SEC for holding municipal polls during corona

0

The Telangana High Court on Thursday (today) took State Election Commission (SEC) to task for holding elections on April 30 at a time when corona cases and deaths are at peak across the state.

The High Court asked SEC, “Are elections important for you than public lives?”

The High Court questioned SEC where was the need to seek state government opinion on holding polls and where was the need to issue election notification at this stage.

The High Court asked SEC whether it has no power powers to postpone municipal polls and whether SEC can’t see increasing corona cases and deaths in Telangana.

The High Court expressed anger at SEC when it told the court that it had issued poll notification after taking the opinion of the state government.

“Are you living on earth or some other planet? Can’t you see the increasing corona cases and deaths in Telangana? Where was the need to seek state government opinion?” the court questioned.

The court also expressed anger when the advocate general failed to answer what the government will do after April 30 to contain coronavirus as the night curfew will end on April 30.

The AG said the government will review the situation on April 30 and take a decision on what to do after April 30.

The High Court expressed anger over the government waiting till the ‘last minute’ to take decisions on such important issues concerning the lives of people.
