Blow to KCR as TRS MP meets Amit Shah

0

The Bharatiya Janata Party is slowly stepping up its efforts to corner Telangana Chief Minister Chandrasekhara Rao. TRS Rajya Sabha MP Dharmapuri Srinivas has created political sensation by meeting with Amit Shah in Delhi. His meeting triggered speculation that DS has almost taken the plunge into the BJP. His RS term is there till 2022. DS took the decision amid allegations that he did not work for TRS winning chances in last parliamentary elections.

Already, DS’s son Aravind has won Nizamabad MP seat on BJP ticket. He defeated KCR’s daughter Kavita. This victory brought a lot of confidence and raised its expectations for its future plans. The TRS leaders have levelled allegations against Dharmapuri Srinivas that he has not worked for the victory of Kavita in this election.

KCR has now started efforts to gather evidence of DS anti-party activities. TRS chief is planning to complain to Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu for taking action against DS. On the other hand, the BJP has made all arrangements for accommodating and protecting DS. Political analysts say that the action of a senior leader like Dharmapuri Srinivas is not surprising but his exit will definitely cause a loss to TRS in the coming days.

Telangana HC upholds disqualification of two MLCs

0

The Telangana High Court on Wednesday upheld the Telangana Legislative Council Chairman’s disqualification of two legislators belonging to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) for defection.

A division bench headed by Chief justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan dismissed the petitions by Ramulu Nayak and Yadav Reddy to strike down their disqualification.

The court, which had reserved its orders last month, observed that Council Chairman Swamy Goud acted constitutionally to disqualify the two Members of Legislative Council (MLCs).

As the lawyer of the two legislators sought orders to the Election Commission not to hold elections for the two seats till they move the Supreme Court to challenge the High Court verdict, the bench asked the poll panel to take note of the same.

Ramulu Nayak, Yadav Reddy and Bhupati Reddy of the TRS had defected to the Congress party before December 2018 Assembly elections. After coming back to power, the TRS sought disqualification of the three MLCs and the Council Chairman had disqualified them.

The trio had filed petitions challenging the disqualification. Bhupati Reddy’s petition is still pending before the court as he also challenged the validity of Para 8 of the 10th Schedule of the Constitution that allow such disqualifications.

TRS to continue issue-based support to NDA

0

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) will extend issue-based support to the BJP-led NDA government as it did during the latter’s previous term, party President and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao said on Tuesday.

Stating that the state neither had a confrontation with the Centre nor it wants one, the TRS chief said it would maintain constitutional relations.

He told here that the whole world knows that the TRS is not part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

“I promoted Federal Front and I still stick to it. Yes. What is wrong in it?” asked Rao during his first interaction with media after Lok Sabha polls.

“People have given (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi the opportunity. He will do what he has to do. We are in power here and we will do what we have to do,” said KCR, as the TRS chief is popularly known.

The Chief Minister found fault with the opposition parties and a section of media for what he called “silly stories” and “imagination” over his non-participation in NITI Aayog meeting chaired by Prime Minister Modi last Saturday.

“We are a state government and we are here with required political stability. We are breaking records. We won Assembly elections with three-fourth majority, got majority of seats in Lok Sabha. We swept local body elections. This is not to the liking of many people,” he said in an obvious reference to the criticism by state BJP leaders that KCR skipped the meet as he was yet to get over the shock of defeat.

KCR said he will also not attend meeting of leaders of all parties called by the Centre on Wednesday as he was busy with the arrangements for inauguration of Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project on June 21 for which he had invited his counterparts from Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

TRS Working President K. T. Rama Rao, who is son of KCR, will be attending the meeting.

“Do we have to invite him for everything,” quipped KCR when a reporter asked why he did not invite Modi for inauguration for Kaleshwaram project. “I am doing it. Are you not happy. I am the achiever.”

KCR also did not agree when a reporter pointed out that he had good relations with Modi for five years.

“You are wrong. First year was bitter. When he snatched our mandals and power project, I said the Prime Minister is fascist,” he said.

Admitting that the TRS later supported NDA on issues like election of President and Vice-President, the TRS leader said the party would extend similar issue-based support.

KCR also claimed that the Centre did not extend the help of an extra rupee during last five years. “NITI Aayog asked the Centre to provide Rs 24,000 crore for Mission Kakatiya and Mission Bhagiratha. They did not even give Rs 24,” he said.

The Chief Minister said the Centre did not provide any help for construction of Kaleshwaram project.

“We will request if they give we will accept and if not, we will move ahead,” he said when asked if he will again approach the Centre for funds for various projects.

Keshav Rao elected TRS parliamentary party leader

0

Telangana Rashtra Samithi’s (TRS) senior leader K. Keshav Rao was Thursday unanimously elected as the head of the TRS Parliamentary Party.

At the TRS Parliamentary Party meeting presided over by party President and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, Keshav Rao was also elected as the party leader in Rajya Sabha.

Nama Nageswara Rao will be the TRS leader in the Lok Sabha.

Nageswara Rao was elected from Khammam constituency in the recent elections. He quit the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) to join the TRS a few days before the Lok Sabha polls.

The meeting also decided to nominate a deputy leader and a whip each in both houses of Parliament.

Chandrashekhar Rao discussed with the party MPs the strategy to be adopted during the Parliament session beginning on June 17.

The TRS won 9 out of 17 Lok Sabha seats in the state in recent elections.

KCR cripples Congress through CLP merger with TRS

0

Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao is demolishing the Congress party with his trademark offensive strategies. Now 12 Congress MLAs have proposed to merge the Congress Legislature Party with the TRS Legislature Party. They have met Speaker Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy and made their representation.

The defecting MLAs claim that the voters have approved of their decision by giving a big victory to TRS in their respective segments in the recent local body elections. Meanwhile, Pradesh Congress Committee President Utham Kumar Reddy, CLP leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and others tried to protest against the merger. The police foiled their plans and arrested them.

Right from the beginning, KCR has effectively used the Aakarsh plans of YSR to attract MLAs to destabilize and cripple the opposition parties.

Telangana defections: Congress cries ‘daylight murder of democracy’

0

Hours after 12 out of its 18 MLAs in Telangana met the Assembly Speaker requesting a merger with the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), the Congress on Thursday described the development as a “daylight murder of democracy”.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said: “The way the people’s mandate and democratic norms are being butchered, it’s a daylight murder of democracy.”

“Just because somebody is in power, has access to resources and can control agencies does not mean he can misuse his power,” Khera said.

“These Congress MLAs were elected after the voters rejected the TRS. This is the murder of people’s mandate. India may ignore it today, but it will never forget disrespect of mandate,” he said.

Under the Anti-Defection Act, defectors need a two-thirds majority to seek a merger with any party. Of the total 19 Congress MLAs in the Telangana Assembly, 12 have shifted loyalty to the ruling TRS.

The development came a day after Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief N. Uttam Kumar Reddy resigned from the Assembly after he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Nalgonda in the recent elections.

This brought down Congress’ strength to 18 and the defectors required 12 MLAs to seek Congress Legislature Party’s (CLP) merger with the TRS.

Earlier the CLP in the state Legislative Council merged with the TRS in a similar manner. If this happens in the Assembly too, the Congress will lose the status of state’s main Opposition party.

A party needs one-tenth of the strength of a House to have the main opposition status.

The TRS won 88 out of the 119 seats in last year’s Assembly elections. After the polls, two independents and one of the two Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLAs switched to TRS. If 12 Congress MLAs further join the TRS, the strength of the ruling party in the Telangana Assembly would go up to 103, bringing down the Congress’ tally to six.

In such a scenario, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) will get the status of the main opposition. AIMIM, an ally of TRS, has seven MLAs in the Assembly.

Local body polls: TRS defeated in KCR’s adopted village

0

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) suffered defeat in Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s adopted village and her daughter K. Kavitha’s own village but the ruling party was way ahead of others in the rest of the state in the rural local body elections.

The TRS candidate was defeated in Chinna Mulkanoor village in Karimnagar district, which was adopted by Chandrashekhar Rao in 2016. Independent candidate Rajesham won Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) election.

In Nizamabad district too, the TRS was defeated in Pothangal village of Chandrashekhar Rao’s daughter K. Kavitha. It came as another setback to Kavitha, who was defeated in the recent Lok Sabha elections in Nizamabad constituency.

Kavitha is enrolled as a voter in Pothangal, which is the village of her in-laws. The TRS candidate in MPTC election lost to his BJP rival.

Counting of votes polled in MPTCs and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs) was taken up across the state on Tuesday.

According to the results declared by the state Election Commission so far, the TRS won 3,042 MPTC and 44 ZPTC seats, the main opposition Congress bagged 1,101 MPTC and 3 ZPTC while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 184 TMC and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) 20 MPTC seats. Others were elected in 487 seats.

Elections to 5,659 MPTCs and 534 ZPTCs across 32 districts were held in three phases last month. According to the State Election Commission, 2,426 candidates were in fray for the MPTC and 18,930 for the ZPTC elections.

Elections to 158 MPTCs and 4 ZPTCs were unanimous.

All the elected MPTCs will in turn chose Mandal Parishad presidents while elected ZPTCs will elect Zilla Parishad chairpersons. Elections for Mandal Parishad presidents will be held on June 7 while Zilla Parishad chairpersons will be elected the next day.

TRS leader’s supporter dies of shock over her defeat

0

Disheartened by the defeat of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s daughter K. Kavitha in the Lok Sabha elections, one of her supporters died of shock, TRS leaders said on Monday.

Kishore, a Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) worker, died of cardiac arrest on Saturday in his village Manchikappa in Nizamabad district.

Following Kavitha’s defeat from the Nizamabad Lok Sabha constituency, Kishore had stopped sleeping and eating, according to the party leaders.

Kavitha on Monday visited Kishore’s house and assured full support to the family from the party.

The TRS leader appealed to party workers and her supporters not to lose heart as defeat and victory were part of the democratic process.

The former MP said workers were the strength of the party and they should face the situation with courage.

Kavitha, who was elected from Nizamabad in 2014, assured the people that she will continue to work for them.

Kavitha was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s D. Arvind by over 71,000 votes.

Party leaders said her prospects were marred by the entry of a record number of candidates including 178 farmers who wanted to highlight their problems like lack of remunerative prices for turmeric and red jowar.

The constituency also hit the national headlines as the Election Commission used a record number of Electronic Voting Machines to facilitate polling.

BJP, Congress claim they alone can take on TRS in Telangana

0

Buoyed by their impressive gains in the Lok Sabha polls in Telangana, both the BJP and Congress claimed on Friday that they alone can take on the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and emerge as its alternative.

A day after making surprising gains by winning four seats, the BJP celebrated its victory while Congress cadres rejoiced in three constituencies.

In 2014 election, the BJP and Congress had bagged one and two seats, respectively, and this time their prospects looked bleak with the TRS, fresh from its resounding victory in the Assembly election six months ago, aimed for a clean sweep.

TRS’s tally, however, came down from 11 to nine while its ally All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) retained its lone seat.

At the celebrations at the BJP office on Friday, party General Secretary Muralidhar Rao said BJP alone was capable of countering anti-democratic policies of TRS. He said the party alone could fight TRS’ fascist policies and family politics.

He said his party’s victory in four constituencies had given new hope to the party workers. Former Union minister and senior BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya termed this as a great victory and said it had made BJP a second major political force in the state.

However, state Congress chief Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Congress alone can be an alternative to TRS. He claimed that only Congress has the strength to oust TRS from power.

Reddy, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from Nalgonda constituency, said though BJP was not strong enough in the state, it luckily won four seats. He pointed out that BJP had forfeited its deposit in 100 out of 119 Assembly seats in the election held in December.

BJP had won just one Assembly seat while the Congress had emerged as the second largest party with Assembly 19 seats.

Referring to the defection of 11 Congress MLAs to TRS during the last couple of months, Reddy said the poll results proved that the resignations and defections would have no impact on the party.

Congress leader Revanth Reddy, who was elected from Malkajgiri Lok Sabha seat, said Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao was treating Telangana as his fiefdom and hence the people taught him and his party a lesson.

Revanth Reddy, a bitter critic of the TRS chief, said the people gave this mandate due to the arrogance of Chandrashekhar Rao and his son K. T. Rama Rao.

BJP’s rise sounds alarm for TRS in Telangana

0

As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged four of the 17 seats in Telangana, an alarm has been sounded to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which emerged as the largest party in the state with nine seats.

While vote share of both the BJP and TRS increased from the 2014 general elections, the latter’s seat count declined by two.

The TRS’s share in total votes polled is 41.3 per cent as against 34.9 per cent in 2014. On the other hand, the BJP almost doubled its base in the state as its vote share increased to 19.5 per cent from 10.5 per cent.

Congress’ performance was slightly better this time as its vote share increased from 24.7 per cent in 2014 to 29.5 per cent in 2019. It has bagged three seats – an increase of one seat from the last time.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi, won one seat with a vote share of 2.8 per cent.

BJP makes inroads in Telangana, wrests 3 seats from TRS

0

Making inroads in Telangana, the BJP wrested three seats from the TRS and retained one seat while the Congress also wrested two seats from the ruling party and retained one.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which was hoping for a clean sweep, could win only nine out of 17 seats while its ally All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) retained Hyderabad.

In 2014, the TRS had bagged 11 seats while three MPs from other parties had later switched loyalties to the ruling party.

The BJP improved its tally from one to four while the Congress increased its numbers from two to three.

TRS President and Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s daughter K. Kavitha suffered a shocking defeat in Nizamabad at the hands of the BJP’s D. Arvind.

The BJP also wrested the Adilabad and Karimnagar seats from the TRS. In Karimnagar, TRS senior leader Vinod Kumar lost to the BJP’s Bandi Sanjay Kumar by 89,508 votes.

The Congress wrested Bhongir from the TRS as its senior leader K. Venkat Reddy defeated sitting MP B. Narsaiah Goud.

In Chevella, the Congress party’s Konda Vishweshwar Reddy lost to G. Ranjith Reddy of the TRS. Vishweshwar Reddy, a leading businessman and one of the richest MPs in the previous Lok Sabha, was elected from this constituency in 2014 on a TRS ticket but had crossed over to the Congress recently.

In Khammam, the Congress party’s senior leader and former Union Minister Renuka Chowdary was defeated by Nama Nageswar Rao of the TRS. In the previous election, the YSRCP’s P. Srinivasa Reddy was elected from here and he later joined the TRS.

In Malkajgiri, India’s largest Lok Sabha constituency, the Congress party’s A. Revanth Reddy defeated M. Rajasekhar Reddy of the TRS. This seat was won by the TDP’s Malla Reddy in 2014 but he later switched over to the TRS.

The TRS retained the Medak, Mahabubnagar, Mahabubabad, Peddapalle, Warangal and Zahirabad seats and wrested Nagarkurnool from the Congress.

The Congress’ Uttam Kumar Reddy was elected from Nalgonda, defeating his nearest rival V. Narasimha Reddy by 25,682 votes. In 2014, the Congress party’s G. Sukhender Reddy was elected from here but he later joined the TRS.

The BJP retained Secunderabad, where its leader G. Kishan Reddy defeated TRS candidate T. Sai Kiran Yadav.

TRS hopes of clean sweep in Telangana dashed

0

Overconfidence by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) appeared to have caused a setback to the ruling party in Telangana as both the BJP and Congress were leading in four seats each, dashing its hopes of a clean sweep.

The TRS which was hoping to play a key role was leading in eight constituencies while its ally All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) was ahead in Hyderabad.

TRS President and Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s daughter K. Kavitha was trailing in Nizamabad, a seat she won in 2014. Senior party leader Vinod Kumar was also trailing in Karimnagar.

TRS, which won the Assembly election in December 2018 with a landslide victory, was confident of winning 16 seats, leaving Hyderabad for AIMIM.

The trends show BJP and Congress leading in 4 seats each. Both the parties appeared to have eaten into TRS votes.

TRS, which bagged 88 seats in the 119-member Assembly, increased its tally to over 100 as 14 MLAs including 11 of Congress switched loyalties to the ruling party during the last couple of months.

KCR, as Rao is popularly known, had sought the mandate in Lok Sabha election to enable TRS to play a key role in the formation of a non-BJP and non-Congress government at the Centre. His party leaders were even projecting him as a possible prime ministerial candidate.

The TRS chief, who proposed the Federal Front last year, had a series of meetings with leaders of various non-NDA parties.

Aiming to play a key role at the Centre, KCR had appointed his son K. T. Rama Rao as working president of TRS following the massive victory in the Assembly election. This was seen as an attempt to pave the way for Rama Rao to take over as Chief Minister in the event of KCR moving to Delhi.

In 2014, TRS had won 11 Lok Sabha seats while Congress had bagged two. BJP, YSR Congress Party, Telugu Desam Party and AIMIM had won one seat each.

TRS, YSRCP to wait for clear picture to emerge

0

Both the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) may skip May 23 meeting convened by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and will wait for a clear picture to emerge after the Lok Sabha battle before responding to her invitation.

Though both the parties have officially denied receiving invitations for the May 23 meeting, they appear to be adopting a wait and watch approach before deciding their next strategy.

Some YSRCP leaders wondered how parties could attend a meeting on May 23 when the counting process would still be underway and a clear picture could emerge only late at night or the next day.

United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has invited political heavyweights for the meeting.

TRS President and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, who is trying to bring regional parties together under his proposed Federal Front, is likely to take a decision about talks only after all the results were declared.

As KCR is counting on the support of YSRCP and other parties to push for a non-BJP and non-Congress government, he may wait for the final tally before beginning talks with different players, informed sources said.

Both TRS and YSRCP are likely to emerge kingmakers in the event of the Lok Sabha elections throwing a fractured verdict.

In Telangana, which has 17 Lok Sabha seats, TRS is confident of making a clean sweep along with its ally All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), with the latter expected to retain its Hyderabad seat.

In Andhra Pradesh, YSRCP is tipped to win 20-22 out of 25 Lok Sabha seats. UPA’s reported invitations to both the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and YSRCP have sparked a debate.

The TDP has already declared its support to Congress and its President N. Chandrababu Naidu is even ready to play the anchor for a non-BJP alliance led by the Congress. It was not clear how Naidu would react to the invitation to YSRCP.

A YSRCP leader termed the May 23 meeting too early.

“As 5 per cent VVPAT slips have to be counted, a clear picture will emerge only in the afternoon of May 24,” K. Ravichandra Reddy said during a debate on a Telugu channel.

On whether YSRCP will extend support to Congress-led alliance, the party leaders said their stand was clear.

“Our party leader Jagan Mohan Reddy has already made it clear that whichever party comes forward to give special category status to Andhra Pradesh will get our support,” another YSRCP leader said.

Federal Front may consider taking Congress support: TRS leader

0

The Federal Front proposed by Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao may consider taking Congress support, if necessary, to form a government at the Centre, a leader of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) said on Tuesday.

TRS spokesman Abid Rasool Khan told IANS that they were confident that the Federal Front, comprising non-BJP and non-Congress parties, will get the numbers to form the government on its own.

“We are confident that we will get the numbers to form the government but if we are short of numbers and Congress wants to extend outside support we will consider,” said Khan, who believes a consensus candidate among Federal Front partners will be the next Prime Minister.

He, however, ruled out either taking the support of BJP or extending support to it to form the government.

KCR, as Rao is popularly known, had mooted the idea of non-BJP and non-Congress front last year and since held talks with leaders of various regional parties.

The TRS chief on Monday met M.K. Stalin, leader of DMK, an ally of the Congress, to discuss the Federal Front. Last week, he held talks with his Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan.

“These meetings prompted the whole country to talk about the Federal Front. We are meeting people, talking to them and trying to explain why we want this. After that it is their choice whether they want to come with us or not,” said Khan, who quit the Congress late last year.

He was confident that parties like Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Samajwadi Party (SP), Trinamool Congress and YSR Congress besides TRS will come together to form the Federal Front. He hoped that many parties from other parts of the country will join them.

“Once we have the numbers on board, more people will definitely accept the idea and join us. Everybody would want to have stake in government for development of their states and would see this as a viable idea,” said Khan.

The TRS leader claimed that KCR was not vying for the post of Prime Minister.

“He is doing this in the interest of the country. The country is today heading towards anarchy. The way BJP is acting it has definitely sabotaged the interests of the country. The Congress during its 60-year-rule did nothing for minorities and Dalits. KCR is of the opinion that we should form Federal Front and take charge in Delhi,” Khan added.

TRS leaders expect PM or Deputy PM for KCR?

0

With the election results fast approaching, there are rising expectations among the leaders of Telangana Rashtra Samithi. If everything goes well, they hope that their boss and CM K Chandrasekhara Rao will get a chance to become the prime minister under the regional parties’ quota. KCR has already raised this point before DMK leader Stalin that the Congress should give support to the regional parties if they get greater number of MP seats to form the government at the Centre.
If the Congress wins more seats, then the regional parties should give support to the Congress government on condition that one regional leader be made the deputy prime minister. The TRS is saying right from the beginning it will get hard bargaining power once the party wins all the 16 MP seats in Telangana.

The TRS cadres are putting enormous trust in the leadership capabilities of KCR. They have seen how KCR has made the impossible possible with regard to the formation of separate Telangana state. He promised to merge TRS with the Congress prior to statehood but once the reorganisation act was passed in the Parliament, KCR simply ignored the merger issue. Still, KCR is now becoming friendly to Congress through Stalin and other leaders to play key role in the government formation at the Centre.
