Rangasthalam Full page ad — Is it fair to Baahubali ?

Ram Charan’s Rangasthalam is now the third highest grossing Telugu film after Baahubali 2 and Baahubali 1.

The rustic period drama has grossed over 175 Crores at ticket windows and bagged numerous laurels for pushing the envelope of Telugu cinema. Ironically, the deceptive and over-the-top publicity strategies from team Rangasthalam seems to have causing some sort of embarrassment to Telugu film industry.

Today, a new poster announcing that Rangasthalam collected 175 Crores gross has been released by the publicity team of Rangasthalam. Surprisingly, the poster claims Rangasthalam as the biggest hit of Telugu film industry (With a disclaimer in a very small hard to read font)

Isn’t it an intentional disregard to Baahubali, which has labelled as the pride of Tollywood by critics across the globe for its monstrous box office success.

It is well known that Baahubali franchise set several milestones at the worldwide box office and made Tollywood a very proud film industry. But, team Rangasthalam seems to have shrugged off the biggest blockbuster of Telugu cinema with its misleading publicity strategies.

It may be noted that the total gross of Rangasthalam is no way near to half of Baahubali franchise.

Netizens comment: Sye Raa get up too similar to Baahubali ?

    0

Mega star Chiranjeevi’s prestigious project Sye Raa is on sets and recently Big B Amithab Bachan. Amitabh Bachchan participated in the shoot and said he is honoured to work with superstar Chiranjeevi for “Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy”. He also shared his first look from the film along with that of Chiranjeevi.

However, those who watched Chiranjeevi’s get up in that first look are commenting that the get up is too similar to Prabas get-up in Bahubali-2. The hair style, the beard, the dress, the chains he is wearing in his neck, the color combination of Chiranjeevi’s dress – all are reminding viewers of Bahubali-2 movie. Striking similarities in get-ups is a negative thing and it is something that creative department of the crew needs to keep a tab on. Moreover, compared to folklore genre, “historical drama” genre is difficult one as the details need to be more accurate in case of latter and director can’t take as much liberty as he wants in this case.

‘Baahubali…’ second season to launch on Friday

    0

Animated series “Baahubali: The Lost Legends”, revived for a second season, will be launched on Friday, announced officials of the online streaming app Amazon Prime Video.

The series is based on the blockbuster “Baahubali” film franchise, created by Graphic India and Arka Mediaworks.

All the 13 episodes of the series will be available for streaming on Friday, read a statement.

“There are back stories for each character in ‘Baahubali’, some really powerful scenes which needed to be told and explored through different mediums. I have always enjoyed animation, and I’m glad we are able to visualise these stories through this medium,” said S.S. Rajamouli, the director of the “Baahubali” films.

“When we look at Baahubali and Bhallaladeva, what we see in the film is just a small fragment of their lives. In the bigger picture, there is so much more to know about them. The same applies to other characters too,” he added.

Season 2 of the series will feature new stories revealing more about the events that shaped the lives of the film characters — Baahubali, Bhalaladeva, Sivagami and Kattapa, and also introduces new characters including the sea pirate, Kaala Khanjar and the lone warrior, Chagatai who comes to Mahishmati with a grim purpose.

IIM-Ahmedabad to Study Blockbuster Success of Film ‘Baahubali’

    0

The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIMA) is working on a case study on blockbuster “Baahubali” to highlight how art, business and technology combined to deliver a hugely successful film franchise.

Being authored by IIMA alumnus and visiting faculty Bharathan Kandaswamy, the case study is part of an elective course on movie business offered to the second year students of the institute’s flagship programme in management.

“Baahubali is a path-breaking Indian movie that combines art, business, and technology in a brilliant way. Most of the time, films are creative and artistic but are not able to do good business. Sometimes the technology is not used effectively enough,” Kandaswamy said.

“At times the story is great but is not executed well. And then, sometimes, we have mediocre stories that get a decent opening due to good marketing, but the movie does not sustain due to the weak story,” he added.

“In the case of Baahubali, the three elements of art, technology and business have come together and that is the reason why the movie and its sequel have been successful,” he said.

He said his case study would focus on “Baahubali- The Beginning” and its sequel, “Baahubali- The Conclusion”, and would attempt to unravel its “success mantra”.

Both the films were directed by SS Rajamouli and earned over Rs 1,000 crore at the domestic and international box office.

Kandaswamy, who is associated with a south Indian production house, Kavithalayaa Productions, which made films like Mani Ratnam’s “Roja” and Kamal Haasan starrer “Ek Duje Ke Liye”, is the brain behind an elective course called ‘Contemporary Film Industry-Business Perspective,’ which was launched at the IIMA in 2008-09.

The case study, to be completed in another four months, is part of a course that focusses on the business of the Indian film industry, starting from the selection of scripts to the films hitting the screens, Kandaswamy said.

“The course covers all aspects of a movie, from the selection of good script to its post-production. Film financing, how to raise funds, how to deal with movies, are covered. There are also sessions on marketing, distribution, and promotion of films,” he said.

Last year, a chapter was added on how entities like Amazon, Netflix and Hotstar were causing digital disruption in the film industry, he said.

The course has produced three case studies so far related to the film industry including one on the film “Roja” and another on the success of Rajinikanth-starrer “Muthu” in overseas markets like Japan.

    2017 Domestic Box-Office : A Rewind

    0

It seems like just yesterday that we have entered into 2017, but shockingly, the year finally came to an end. There is just few days left for the New Year and when compared to earlier, this year is very productive for the TFI. Many superhit movies have released and projects like Baahubali 2 : The Conclusion made Tollywood more popular among all film industries in the country. Like every year, we are here to share the year-end report of Tollywood.

This year 169 films have been released so far and out of them, 17 movies have ended up as the successful ones. When compared to the last year, the success ratio has increased and it is 10.05%, whereas, for the year 2016, it was 8%. The success ratio in the year 2015 was just around 4%. Undoubtedly, this is a very good year for the industry, not only because of the steep increase in the success rate but also Tollywood stood in the top position among all Indian film industries with more than 150 releases.

    Market Expansion:

Year Released Films Domestic Share Top 2 Films (Domestic Share in Crores)
    2015173681CrBaahubali - 149.2
    Srimanthudu - 68.9
    2016177719Cr
    Sarrainodu - 67.4
    Janatha Garage - 66.74
    20171691127CrBaahubali 2 - 250.15
    Khaidi No.150 - 89.30

2015 : 173 films had collected a distributor share of 681 Cr in Domestic markets with Baahubali alone contributing over 149 Cr.

2016 : 177 films had collected a distributor share of 719 Cr which was huge jump of 35% when compared to 2015 (excluding Baahubali). Ticket hikes have started in few centres with Baahubali and later distributors/exhibitors started opting for hikes in every possible centre which is the reason for this jump in revenue.

2017 : This year is historic as first time an Industry outside Bollywood has collected over 1,000 Crore distributor share ; Thanks to Baahubali-2 which contributed 250 Crore. This year 169 films so far have collected 1127 cr share ( which includes estimated final business of MCA,Hello) and this can go up to 1150 crores by year end. But the scenario is not that great when we exclude Baahubali-2 as the revenue will only be around 876 Cr which is a jump of 22 percent from previous year. All other biggies excluding Khaidi No.150 failing is a the primary reason for this mediocre improvement in revenues compared to 2016.

    Big Ticket Films :

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion smashed all records by collecting domestic share of over 250 crore ( Telugu version alone). It had also emerged as the highest grossing indian film ever domestically with a gross of 1400 Crores which is miles ahead of previous record holder Dangal which was 510 Crores

Khaidi No.150 : This film had collected record first day numbers , and a total of near 90 crore distributor share while no other film except the Baahubali series achieved 70cr share in domestic. This film marks the comeback of Megastar of Telugu Cinema

Except Balakrishna’s Gautamiputra Satakarni, all other biggies either failed or achieved an Average status. Like last year , this year as well a forgettable one for Mahesh babu with Spyder being a Disaster & for Pawan kalyan too with Katamarayudu being a Flop.

    Medium/Small Ticket Films :

There have been three Blockbusters among these films similar to the last year but the impact is bigger. Fidaa, Shatamanam Bhavati did well across all centres while the ROI of Arjun Reddy is more than 5 times.

Undoubtedly Nani can be called as the star of the year in this league as all his 3 films are success with a cumulative revenue of over 80 Crore. Rana and Sharwanand scored double hits. Venkatesh,Naga Chaitanya scored hits with Guru & RaRandoi Veduka Chudham respectively. ‘ Anando Brahma ‘ is another surprise Hit as it had no expectations prior to the release.

    Impact of GST :

GST had a slight negative impact on the industry as it started denting distributor shares in Telugu States. The loss is in the range of 5 percent to a maximum of 10 percent depending upon the performance of the film in various centres.

    2017 Box-office categorisation, Shares

    All-TIME Blockbuster :

After ‘Baahubali’ I realised power of post-production: Sharad Kelkar

    0

Actor Sharad Kelkar, who lent his voice for actor Prabhas’ character in Hindi version of the blockbuster “Baahubali: The Beginning” and the sequel “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” , says the film made him realise the importance and power of post-production.

“For a large part of my career I knew the power of only three words – start, camera, action…after ‘Baahubali’ I realise the power of fourth word – start, camera, action, post production,” said Sharad at the International Animation and VfX Awards, 24FPS Awards.

“Initially, when I was shooting for movies such as ‘Baahubali’, I used to wonder how can I modulate voice and tone by looking at actors delivering dialogues in front of a green screen. It was when we saw the first cut of the film that I realised the power of VFX. It brought life to the character, the story and is a living character itself,” he added.

The awards ceremony was held here on Friday where Sharad received an award for his versatile performance.

Sharad has dubbed in Hindi for a number of Hollywood films which include “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”, “Guardians of the Galaxy”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “Exodus: Gods and Kings”, “X-Men: Apocalypse”, “Moana” and “XXX: Return of Xander Cage”.

Prabhas : Arrival of a New South Indian Super Star ?

When Prabhas accepted Bahubali project years ago, everyone in the film industry were apparently startled as to why this Tollywood heartthrob had signed a bulk project that takes away three years of his peak career and offers comparatively lesser monetary benefit. Usually, this kind of bulk-date acceptance is done by heroes, who are past their prime or by those adventurists who wish to shot into fame or perish in one go. Still, Prabhas, who was at peak of his career, with Darling and Mirchi superhits, had given a nod for a humongous project called Bahubali. While Prabhas has taken this calculated risk, some rhetoric questions that often strike common peoples’ mind are – Why has he opted for Bahubali at the peak of his career? What if it fails? Even if it becomes moderate hit how would it help his career?

However, pushing all those questions to backseat, with smashing hit of Bahubali which has grossed over 430 crores so far worldwide , Prabhas is about to earn a cool 60 crore through direct remuneration plus share in Tamil distribution rights and in overall profits. Not only has he hit financial jackpot, but his career is also bound to undergo a dramatic transformation.

Telugu Hero Plays Big in Tamil?

So far we have seen Tamil heroes penetrating into Telugu film industry. If Rajinikanth or Kamal Haasan or Suriya conquered the souls of Telugu fans, it’s solely because their films were dubbed into Telugu, which grossed well at box office. Rare were the Telugu movies and Telugu products that Tamils had gone crazy about.

Akkineni Nageshwar Rao’s Devadasu was an exception and may be a couple of other films fit the bill. Such great flicks are few and far between. Prabhas, from this generation, has broken the jinx. He successfully cruised to Tamil industry and Tamil audience with Baahubali. So, we now know what Prabhas crazed for.

Arrival of a New South India’s super star?

Not just Tamil, Prabhas’ tremors even touched Malayalam industry as well, which often reaps national awards with its off-beat movies. And coming to Karnataka, Telugu heroes are always welcome in Kannada land. Now Karnataka state is so captivated by Bahubali’s magic, the movie has become highest grosser ever for any language including their Kannada movies. So, it’s obvious that now a new super star is born in south whom all southern languages – Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam- can own up.

Within his own Telugu language states Prabhas may still needs to race up to couple of top stars but with his newly acquired Pan-South India,to an extent Pan-India visibility prabhas has scope for bigger market than others – only if he can tap into it properly. In long run, Prabhas movies might continue to sweep South India’s box offices.

What should Prabhas do to march forward?

    1. Prabhas and his coterie have to sit up and assess post-Bahubali situation. If required they need to dump all the future scripts he agreed to do after Bahubali-2

    2. Prabhas has to redesign his projects to enable himself to cater to all five southern states. As the budget, howsoever big it would be, may not be an issue for his movies as they are guaranteed of good dubbing rights offers from all southern states, at least for next 2-3 years. So,he has to increase the production budget to deliver technically brilliant movies

    3. Last but not the least, Prabhas should not let this wildest dream like success go to his head ; should continue his current off-screen cool dude image

We,at Telugu360.com, wish Prabhas to make use of this post-Bahubali scenario to take a giant leap forward delivering highest quality movies and continue to resonate Telugu Pride.

Don’t want to break out of ‘Baahubali’ image: Prabhas

Prabhas, who became popular as the star of the “Baahubali” film franchise, says he doesn’t mind living under its shadow.

“I don’t want to break out of the image. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I got and I want to keep it all my life,” Prabhas told IANS here.

Prabhas attained fame as Amarendra Baahubali and Mahendra Baahubali from the “Baahubali” universe — which went on to become India’s biggest blockbuster with worldwide earnings of over Rs 900 crore.

The film’s story is about the battle for the ownership of an ancient kingdom between two brothers. The story is woven together in two parts with dance, music, emotion and drama.

“It is an amazing thing that happened… Sometimes I wonder ‘Am I the main lead of ‘Baahubali….’,” he said.

It also features Anushka Shetty, Ramya Krishnan, Tamannaah Bhatia and Sathyaraj.

The first part “Baahubali: The Beginning” came out in 2015 and the second “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” was released earlier this year. The film will have its TV premiere on Sony MAX on Sunday.

Talking about the fame he got after the film’s success, Prabhas said: “People recognise me from all over the country which we didn’t expect. We thought that the film might work but not like this… Now, people recognise me from Telugu to suddenly all over the country… It is very beautiful.”

On the film front, Prabhas is busy with “Saaho”, which will mark Shraddha Kapoor’s Telugu film debut. The film is being shot simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Bhaarateeyudu 2 – From Arka to Dil raju

    0

Earlier today, a big announcement regarding the sequel to Shankar’s iconic hit film Bharateeyudu was officially announced on the eve of Dussehra. Star Telugu producer Dil Raju is going to pool money bags for this crazy project which will be made as a bilingual in Telugu and Tamil. Though reasons are not known, Shankar is very particular on a Telugu producer to come on board for this project.

Sources say that Shankar initially approached Baahubali producers to back this big budget project. But, they were not interested to spend such a high budget that is on par with Shankar’s previous films. They don’t have the same comfort with other directors that they have with Rajamouli So they were never interested

With Baahubali producers turning down Shankar’s offer, Dil Raju decided to take up the project.

The regular shooting will commence towards the end of next year. The film has been titled Indian 2.

Not disappointed about ‘Baahubali’ missing out Oscar entry: Rajamouli

    0

S.S. Rajamouli is not disappointed that his magnum opus “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” was not chosen as Indias official entry to the Oscars for the foreign language film category this year. The filmmaker says his aim is to take stories to a wider audience, and making money for the team, instead of winning awards.

“(I am) Not at all (disappointed at losing out the race to Oscars this year). When I make a film, I never think about awards. It is not my aim. The aim is to first satisfy myself with the story and then next is to see that it reaches the maximum number of audience and makes money for everyone who has put their life in it,” Rajamouli told IANS here.

“That is my most important thing. If awards come, then I am happy. If they don’t, I don’t mind that because they are not at all my criteria,” he added.

“Newton”, a Hindi film set against the backdrop of elections in the world’s largest democracy, has been announced as India’s official entry for the the foreign language film category at the Oscars. “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion”, which will have its TV premiere on Sony MAX on October 8, was also reportedly in contention.

Rajamouli attained global fame as the creator of the “Baahubali” universe — which went on to become India’s biggest blockbuster with worldwide earnings of over Rs 900 crore.

Starring Prabhas and Rana Daggubati as the male protagonists, the film’s story is about the battle for the ownership of an ancient kingdom between two brothers. The story is woven together in two parts with dance, music, emotion and drama.

It also features Anushka Shetty, Ramya Krishnan, Tamannaah Bhatia and Sathyaraj.

The first part “Baahubali: The Beginning” came out in 2015 and the second “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” was released earlier this year.

The filmmaker says he is yet to come out of the “Baahubali” spell.

“It is quite a complicated spell that you cannot just say ‘Okay, I just got out of it’,” said the filmmaker, who worked with Dharma Productions to help the film transcend language barriers.

He said he was sure that the film will be successful, but its popularity in northern India stumped him.

“The total budget of both the films was Rs 150 core. If we hadn’t expected that the film will do very well and aim good result — simple economics will point out that we would not have done the movie at all,” he said.

After the success of the franchise, Rajamouli says he has “lost a little bit of privacy in the northern belt as well”.

“But nothing else has changed. I am as content as I was before the film released,” the director said.

Talking about the disappointing year at the Bollywood box office in 2017, Rajamouli said: “At present, the Hindi film industry has hit a lean patch and I don’t think that it will last long. Very soon we will be able to see quite a number of successes.”

    Baahubali to Re-release?

    0

SS Rajamouli created a huge sensation with the franchise of Baahubali which released as Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali: The Conclusion. Both the films ended up as massive hits and raked some never seen commercial figures in their final run. Though it was planned to be made as a single film, considering the budget and the audience, Rajamouli made it in two parts. Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka and Tamannaah played the lead roles. As per the latest news, the film is all set for a re-release soon.

No Value for ‘Baahubali Writer’ Brand?

    0

Senior film writer Vijayendra Prasad, better known as ace director SS Rajamouli’s father, has been in the industry for decades and has penned stories for several big films including the films directed by Rajamouli. Two years ago, he became nationwide famous for penning the two biggest blockbusters of this decade, Baahubali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Now, he is revered by even Kollywood and Bollywood as one of the most talented writers of the country. Considering all these achievements and honors, doesn’t it come as a hard-to-believe news when we tell you that no buyer dared to acquire his new film, ‘Sri Valli’?

Sri Valli is the only 4th film that Prasad has directed in his three decade long career. All his previous three directorials, even Rajanna which starred Nagarjuna Akkineni in a key role, were commercial failures at box office. He however dared to direct ‘Sri Valli’ for two primary reasons, he had immense faith in his script and the second, he found national stardom with Baahubali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The producer was confident that the tag of ‘Baahubali’ writer will help him sell the film. He however proved wrong.

With no buyer coming forward to acquire the rights of even a single area, the producer has finally opted for an own release this Friday, Sep 15. Was it because the prices quoted by the producer were too high? Or the buyers had no faith in Prasad’s directorial ability? Or both?

The film has been promoted by heavy heads like Rajamouli and Ram Charan. Starring all newcomers, Sri Valli is being touted as a scientific thriller. Let’s wait for a few more hours to find out if Vijayendra Prasad can prove the buyers wrong in deserting his film.

Exclusive : GoT Style Baahubali Series is Coming

All those ‘Game of Thrones’ fans out there, be optimistic to see our very own Indian TV series of that scale and potential. Makers of Baahubali are holding discussions with a multi national company to keep alive and continue the Baahubali world in the form of a high budget Television series.

Ever since Baahubali 2 happened, fans of this franchise, which is arguably every Indian movie lover, have been yearning to see the continuation. With Rajamouli reluctant to spend a few more years on the project and also because the story ended in part 2, producers couldn’t proceed towards part 3 even though they were willing.

Plans for the Television adaptation of Baahubali have been in makers’ mind for a long time, but the challenges were also galore for this effort. First of all, Rajamouli won’t be in director’s chair, which will be a major disappointment for fans. Secondly, matching the standards set by Rajamouli and his vision is second to impossible. Expectations will be sky high, and meeting them will be tough however good the output is. If the TV series falls short of the feature film’s aura even by a whisker, producers will have to face the accusations that they were just trying to cash in on the film’s success.

Possibly having all these thoughts in mind, producers haven’t hasten things, and finally they are about to seal the deal with a reputed MNC for a TV series to be mounted on a lavish scale. Producers will get 25 crore per Season as Royalty. Rajamouli will be credited for ‘Directorial Supervision’ as he will be continually monitoring the progress and will be infusing valuable inputs.

‘Baahubali’ steered its way through many problems: Producer Shobu

Producer Shobu Yarlagadda must be buoyed by the phenomenal success of S.S. Rajamouli’s “Baahubali” franchise. But he says the film steered its way through many problems to emerge successful.

Speaking at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne which concludes on Tuesday, Yarlagadda spoke about the problems he faced while making his movies.

Rajamouli and Yarlagadda had previously worked together in Ram Charan’s “Magadheera”.

Speaking on the length and budget of “Magadheera”, he said: “The problem was the length – it couldn’t fit into three hours. We weren’t sure to let go of the story.

“That’s why we thought to do it as a two-part film. Rajamouli wanted to go back and try to accommodate it in a three-hour single film, but we stopped him from doing so.”

The team had to face a lot of problems before the release of “Magadheera”, but Rajamouli’s confidence helped steer through the obstacles.

“I had confidence in Rajamouli. The challenge was timeline and to stick to the budget. But we did surpass our deadline and budget. It started as a Rs 120 crore project and then it went further. We always knew the film had to be pan-India. It did get a North Indian release but it wasn’t justified I believe,” he said.

    The planning changed for “Baahubali”.

“But for ‘Baahubali’, we started working on the Hindi release right from the first day and knew we had to do more to make it work pan India,” he added.

From the beginning, “Baahubali” was planned as a two-part film.

“We realised when the script was ready that there is so much from ‘Baahubali’ that can be told and not everything could be put into the film. So we started exploring options and putting things in place from when we started,” he said.

The “Baahubali” franchise is India’s biggest blockbuster with worldwide earnings of over Rs 900 crore.

Film editor Antony L Ruben said upcoming spy thriller Vivegam will be on par with SS Rajamouli’s mega-blockbuster Baahubali in terms of visuals. The movie, directed by Siva, stars Ajith, Vivek Oberoi, Kajal Aggarwal and Akshara Haasan.

Antony LRuben said the technicians, who worked on the film, have delivered world-class results. “I can proudly say that Vivegam will be on par with Baahubali regarding the technical aspects and grandeur. Another reason to feel proud is that we didn’t outsource CGIand VFX technicians from other states or country. All our technicians are from Chennai, and they have delivered world-class output,” Ruben said.

Ruben, 30, said Vivegam was quite exhaustive because of the multiple layers in the screenplay written by Siva. “I feel relaxed now because it is very satisfying after accomplishing such an enormous task. Vivegam is the most challenging film I have ever done. I have worked for almost thirty films till date, but the effort and time I had put in for this movie is equal to none.

The husband and wife characters essayed by Ajith sir and Kajal will strike a chord with the public. And there are stunts with no violence. Technically it is a wholesome entertainer with aninternational standard,” said Ruben.

Vivegam will release on August 24. He is also simultaneously working on director Atlee’s Mersal, which will see actor Vijay play three characters. Samantha, Kajal Aggarwal and Nithya Menen play the female leads in the movie. “It’s a classy film with an excellent social message. ‘Indian mythology offers best stories for VFX movies’

The Visual Effects (VFX) industry in India has a bright future as more and more top filmmakers will soon be looking at high-end fantasies. And, Indian mythology with its plethora of epic stories, has a lot of fantasies to offer, says Kotha Basi Reddy, the pioneer of digital technology in Indian films.

“VFX industry is going to grow after ‘Baahubali’. The films will involve a lot of computer graphics (CG) because (director Raj Mouli) has shown that visualisation of fantasy is the most important thing in movies,” Reddy told IANS in an interview.

“Hollywood movies go all over the world with so much CG and special effects because of fantasy. People love it,” said Reddy, who introduced digital technology into movie-making in India in 2003.

Reddy owns Digiquest, a VFX and animation studio that has contributed to the making of over 400 movies, including “Baahubali”, “Magadheera”, “Eega”, “Katmarayudu” and “Kick”.

He felt Indian mythology could provide the best subjects for such movies. “In Indian mythology there is so much of sci-fi. It’s not even funny. We talk about Ravana flying on a plane and taking Sita with him. There are many epic stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata,” he said.

Referring to the Hollywood movie “Avatar”, he said it was a blend of Rama and Hanuman. “The whole world is learning from us, taking away things from us, but we have failed in creating a brand.”

Reddy believes that if movies based on Indian mythology with VFX and CG are made, the whole world would watch them. He felt that Indians have the ability to make such films as work for many international projects is done here.

“Would you believe that the tiger in ‘Life of Pi’ is not a real tiger but a digital one,” he asked and pointed out that most of the work on this movie was done in Hyderabad.

He admitted that Indian audiences don’t watch much animation and the movies are largely star driven. “This will change as new kids are coming. Digital will have a big role. You will see young stars making movies which will be internationally acceptable. It will no longer be song and dance movies.”

Reddy recalled that he brought costly digital equipment in those early years with a huge investment. “The technology has changed a lot. I brought a digital camera which then cost $99,000. Today the same camera costs not even $99,” said Reddy, who has so far invested Rs 30 crore (almost $5 million) in his studio.

Though the revenues of Digiquest had reduced by half to Rs 3 crore as all production houses have gone 100 percent digital, Reddy is happy that he contributed to the growth of the sector.

“I did not return to India from the US to make money,” said Reddy, a founding member and former Vice President of software services firm Infotech, now known as Cyient.

He is proud to have been part of the process that democratised the film industry. “Youngsters, through short films, are showcasing their talent. Their films are getting millions of hits from all over the world.”

Reddy is now trying to address the issue of manpower and has set up an academy offering courses in movie-making, visual effects, animation and game design.

“Our equipment is free not just for students of the academy but also others who bring a good script. The short movies will be uploaded on our channel and we will share the money,” said Reddy, who has so far produced eight short movies.

Reddy has a dream of making an Oscar-winning movie. “It will be in animated format and I will work with my students to make it,” he said.

Reddy, who is a member of CII National Media & Entertainment Committee, lamented the government is doing little to create better opportunities for creatively talented people. “There is so much of educational, research, simulation and training material to be created in the digital format in this country that we don’t have enough people,” he said.
