Desperate Attempts to Revive Glory of MEK

0

As the Megastar Chiranjeevi hosted Meelo Evaru Koteeswarudu (MEK) Season 4’s TRP Ratings continue to stay low, organizers are resorting to desperate attempts to save the sinking ship.

Since the ratings of the once popular game show haven’t shown any sign of picking up in the originally telecast weekdays, MEK team grabbed the weekend slot as well in their effort to boost the show’s performance. Celebs are also being invited on a regular basis to revive the show’s good old days.

After telecasting the episode having senior hero Venkatesh in the hot seat on the Ugadi festival day, Megastar hosted comedy king Brahmanandam in the Celebrity Episode telecast this Sunday. Known for having great association, Megastar and Brahmi provided quite an amount of fun on the show.

Brahmanandam is generally used to or was used to to (given his fall in the recent years) add entertainment to the movies and hence improve their box office prospects. Can he do the same magic on the MEK show and help it at amass decent ratings?

Megastar Chiranjeevi’s comeback film Khaidi No.150, which was released on Jan 10th 2017, turned out to be a phenomenal grosser at the Overseas Box-office. Prior to release, trade circles were skeptical about this movie’s performance at overseas, but euphoria started building up since audio release, peaked by the time of movie release. This film had taken an unprecedented start with $1.3 Million gross on premiere day,on par with Baahubali-1. Adding to Megastar‘s comeback craze, Khaidi No.150 premiere day in USA was coincided with T-Mobile Tuesday $2 ticket offer which was first of its kind.  As per the trade sources we talked to, $500-$600k of the gross can be accounted to this smoking hot deal. Nevertheless, it is still gigantic opening day for Khaidi No.150.  After the premiere day, Khaidi No.150 had competition from other two pongal movies, but still managed to add another $1.1 million in its full run.  Finally,  it  has ended up as All-time 4th highest grosser in USA.

Note : Effective Jan 1st 2017, after AMC taken over Carmike, there were changes in payout structure of all theatre chains, hence distributor share will be lower compared to previous years’.

Profit – Loss Calculation:

After expenses deduction, USA share is $1,249,640 i.e. 8.49Cr INR, including non-USA countries [2.50 Cr] total overseas share of Khaidi No.150 is 10 Cr 99 Lakhs INR. As the distributor, had paid only 10 crores as the distribution rights to the producer, this overseas distributor had earned around 1 crore profit

Controversy:

According to the reliable sources, producer agreed to sell the rights for 12 Crores (2 crore recoverable), but distributors had paid only 10 crores. So, now if the producer strictly enforces the pre-release agreement, then above said 1 crore profit would not remain with the distributors, it will be a breakeven film for them.

The 1983 movie – ‘Khaidi’, which was loosely based on Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone’s ‘First Blood’, brought box office success and stardom to Chiranjeevi. Playing a cobler in ‘Swayamkrishi’, Chiru went on to receive Nandi award in 1987. And later, Chiranjeevi has no looking as ‘Rudraveena’ released in 1988 won three national film awards including best film on national integration.

And then came ‘Kondaveeti Donga’, a thriller movie which was directed by Kodandarami Reddy, went on to collect a distributors share of Rs. 7.4 million on the opening weekend. In the subsequent year, ‘Gang Leader’ has set new records at the box office and was also remade in Hindi as ‘Aaj Ka Goonda Raj’ with Meenakshi Sheshadri as female role.

Accolades had poured in for Chiranjeevi for Hindi movies – Pratibandh (1990) and The Gentleman (1993). ‘Gharana Mogudu’ in 1992 had raked in Rs 10 crore at the box office. This very year, Chiranjeevi had become the highest paid actor overtaking Amitab  Bachchan when he was paid Rs 1.25 crore for ‘AapadBandhavudu’.

After reeling under success drought during mid 1990s, Chiranjeevi bounced back with ‘Hitler’ and ‘Choodalani Undi’ which grossed Rs 16 crore at the box office.

After a descent success, the Megastar tasted success with ‘Tagore’ in which he donned professor and forms a group with his students with an intention to end corruption in the society. This movie has got overwhelming response from the audience in 2003. The movie has proved to be a blockbuster hit.

As he turns 61 years on Monday, teaser and first-look of his 150th movie are scheduled to be released in a splendid way. There is speculation that Chiranjeevi is trying to make a comeback in his cinema career with his 150th movie since his interest in politics is gradually weaning off.

Ram Charan confirms Megastar’s comeback film

0

Not long ago, Megastar Chiranjeevi made a formal statement about his comeback film during Bruce Lee audio launch. After that no news about the developments of the project were announced. VV Vinayak, who was considered to direct the film, is tight lipped about the project and this has led to many rumours in the industry circles.

Megastar spends fancy amount on House Remodeling

0

Off late, Megastar Chiranjeevi is not going good in politics and in films. Though he is a Rajya Sabha MP, he is not in a prominent position in the Congress party; also he has been away from party activities for quite some time. On the other hand, Chiru’s most awaited 150th film is being delayed due to various reasons. With all these in consideration, the actor is looking forward to make vasthu changes to his visually pleasing bungalow built in 3,000 square yards in Jubilee hills.

According to sources, the actor has consulted with top Vasthu experts who advised him to change the northern side of the house, in an attempt to get back the past glory and happiness to the family. Interestingly, Chiru is spending Rs 2 to 3 crores to re-model the house in accordance with the vastu principles.

Chiranjeevi’s palatial house has attracted many celebrities in the past, including the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, Bollywood Superstars Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachchan.

In the recent past, many politicians including Andhra Pradesh CM and Telangana CM, have made major changes to their houses to make them vasthu compliant. Let’s hope that these vasthu changes favor Chiranjeevi and bring back his past glory in politics as well as in films.

Own Up Responsibility & Resign: Chiru Tells Naidu

0

Grieving at the unprecedented deaths in the stampede at Godavari Pushkaralu this morning, Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Chiranjeevi demanded that CM Chandrababu Naidu should resign owning up responsibility for the poor arrangements and his inability to organize the Pushkaralu in an orderly way.

He  squarely blamed chief minister Naidu for the tragedy in which about 27 people were killed.

He said Naidu’s key adviser of Pushkaralu was inexperienced  and was lacking in administrative capabilities hence these accidents.

“Tears do not wipe off your responsibility and culpability” he told Naidu.

The incident exposed the inability and irresponsibility of the government. ” Even though the CM publicised to celebrate the Pushkaralu on the lines of Kumbh Mela, but it lacked any scientific plan and execution,” he said wondering.

“That the tragedy struck at the very first hour of the commencement of Pushkaralu was indicative of the failure of the government on all counts,” he said asking what did CM Naidu do the all these days visiting Rajahmundry frequnetly when the arrangements were not in place.

“This is the result of the CM appetite  for propaganda rather than concrete commitment to ensure the success of the Puskharalu” Chiranjeevi said.

Chiranjeevi took strong objection to the CM style of functioning.  He said the CM tied down all the officials in numerous review meeting preventing them from doing the works assigned to them.

Referring to BJP leader Kanna Lakshminarayana’s statement that Pushkarala arrangements were not up to satisfactory, Chiranjeevi said the statement was proven correct.

The former union minister expressed displeasure at how endowments minister Manikyal Rao was sidelined in the run up to the Pushkaralu.

” TDP leaders themselves vouchsafed that everything is being overseen by CM himself and no need to consult other cabinet colleagues. When the CM is alone responsible for the arrangements, he should own up the failure and step down,” he demanded.

Chiranjeevi recalled how Chandrababu Naidu demanded resignation of the then chief minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy  when some people died in the stampede at the time of Krishna Pushkaralu.

Naidu should question his conscience in the light of his previous demand and take a decision on the resignation, he said. Chiranjeevi  said Rs 5 lakh exgratia was pittance compared to the loss of lives and  demanded  an exgratia of Rs 20 lakh for the bereaved families.

APCC president N Raghuvira Reddy also joined Chiranjeevi in demanding resignation of  Chandrababu Naidu.  They said a Congress team  will visit  Rajahmundry today to console the families of those who died in the stampede.

The Problem of Being Pawan Kalyan

0

Life in reel world is easy. One need not break one’s head to figure out who is a hero or a villain. Heroes are extremely benevolent while Villains vile- always conspire, kill, rob, and booze as if they have nothing to do in life. They live like two different subspecies of Homo Sapiens-Homo Heroicus and Homo Villainus. Like the Neanderthals, villainus is overpowered and eliminated by Heroicus. The problem with real life is tad confusing. Here, heroes and villains are indistinguishable. They look alike in every aspect of life- in dressing, talking, loving, hating, abusing, cheating people, amassing wealth etc. You will never know who is a villain. One’s villain is another’s hero and vice versa. Today’s hero is tomorrow’s villain. This region’s villain is hero in the other region. Sometimes villains are resurrected as heroes and heroes are condemned to dustbin. Ordinary people are subjected to extreme anxiety in figuring out a hero or a villain. They fail and vote to somebody thinking he is a hero only to repent later.

Some time back, Chiranjeevi stepped into this real world as Homo Heroicus of tinsel world. He thought he would kill with a single stroke the Homo Villainus and become “Captain Andhra Pradesh”. He could not succeeded and quickly realized  that he was only a movie Heroicus. So, peeled off his costume and returned to his elements only to find that fighting in real life is not remunerative. So he joined Congress and which rewarded him with a glittering gift of post of union minister which can’t be bought with any amount of money.

Chirajneevi’s brother Pawan Kalyan, another member of Homo Heroicus, unmindful of the fate of his brother, stepped into real life battle, straight from the sets, amid too much background war cries and mobilized fan-army. He was a bit wiser in not entering fray in 2014. Why?  He can’t dream of becoming “Captain Andhra Pradesh.” Because the state was about to be divided. He tapped key ‘ wait and watch’. So, that he could enter as Homo Heroicus if 2014 election throws split verdict. Unfortunately for him, Andhra and Telangana gave a clear verdict to TDP and TRS respectively. Now he is not wanted in successor states. If he were to carve out some space, he has to figure out who is a villain in two states and declare war against the Homo Villainus. Like his brother he gave up war before it is fought and settled for a compromise for peace of mind. This was what he did in the press conference he addressed last Sunday. The press conference was lacking in many things- clarity, direction and politics. It clearly shows Pawan is beating a retreat for his early position Homo Heroicus in movie land . Why?

French Social Psychologist Sergi Moscovici talks of Social Representations. Social representation is the meaning you develop to negotiate with the society. Each person possesses multiple representations. Depending upon the context, one representation becomes pronounced collapsing all others. It is difficult to strike a balance, this was exactly Pawan Kalyan did in the press conference and failed. Pawan Kalyan is a bundle of contradictory social representations. He is caught in the web of these representations. To become a political leader, he has to disentangle himself from this web and come out with one clear social representation. Given his predicament it is impossible. For example he has Kapu, Andhra, Telugu movie star and Hyderabadi social representations. If he attacks Naidu’s TDP government, it would be immediately construed as an attack on Kammas by Kapus- which is not advisable now. If he attacks KCR’s TRS government, he would dubbed as Andhra settler and physical attacks not ruled out.  If he questions phone tapping and supports section 8 being an Andhra his identity as a resident of Hyderabad would be in jeopardy. He can’t back Andhra farmers in capital zone nor can he bite TDP.  Similarly, he can’t criticize Telangana government and survive in Hyderabad. He beat a hasty retreat by advising both parties restraint. He did not touch cash-for-vote stating sub judice as it has two sides of Andhra and Telangana. Remaining as Pawan Kalyan, the movie star, is the best bet for the time being as he needs the support of both AP and TS fans. He chose a middle path and bought  peace with both sides. Probably this press conference might be end of the road for Pawan’s political dreams.

Chiranjeevi-Profile

0

Chiranjeevi is a leading figure in Indian cinema, who turned a politician and served as the union minister of state for tourism for a brief period during UPA-2 regime.

Born Shiva Shankara Vara Prasad, Chiranjeevi is one of the most looked upon names in Telugu film industry. Born into middle class BC family on August 22, 1955 in Mogalthuru of Andhra State, Chiranjeevi always had a passion for acting.

He completed degree in commerce from Narsapur. He said in many interviews that he barely had decent clothes and food when he pursued undergraduation. His strong inclination towards cinema made him shift his base to then Madras.

Chiranjeevi enrolled into film institute where he completed a one-year diploma course in acting. He met several Telugu film producers and directors for a role. In 1978, he was offered a role in ‘Praanam Khareedu’ movie.

His outstanding acting skills and flexibility soon fetched him back to back roles. He appeared in Punaadhi Raalu, Maa Voori Paandavulu and Tayaramma Bangaraiah.

Soon Chiranjeevi got a chance to play antagonist’s role. He thus essayed villain roles in Mosagadu, Nyayam Kaavali  and Ranuva Veeran (Tamil).

Kodi Ramakrishna’s Intlo Raamayyah Veedilo Krishnaiah gave a leading character with negative shades to Chiranjeevi. He, however, got a major brake with K. Viswanath’s Shubhaleka that dealt with dowry system. The movie not only won critical appreciation but even brought the much required name and fame to Chiranjeevi. It was this movie that showcased his brake-dancing skills.

Chiranjeevi emerged a mass actor in 1983 when Khaidi movie hit the theatres.  Although he appeared predominantly in action oriented movies, he even essayed some dynamic characters in Challenge, Vijetha, Swayam Krushi  and Rudra Veena.

After the major flops he received in the late nineties, he rose to fame yet another time with Master movie and went on to appear in box-office hits such as Tagore and Shankardada MBBS.  He is referred as mega star in Tollywood.

On total Chiranjeevi acted in 149 movies.  His entry into politics was rather dramatic. The launch of Praja Rajyam Party, which basically emerged on social justice concept to other backward castes in Andhra Pradesh, apparently sent shockwaves within political circles.

Chiranjeevi’s PRP, although won 18 assembly seats, drew zero in Lok Sabha.  With noted personalities such as Parakala Prabhakar holding press meets and alleging that PRP was a company and a poisonous tree, the image of the party presumably tarnished.

Chiranjeevi eventually merged PRP with Congress party in 2011 and he was made the union minister. He is also known for undertaking many charity works through his eye and blood banks.
