After scoring a runaway success with bold romantic entertainer RX 100, director Ajay Bhupathi is taking his own time to start his next project. He has been working on the script from the past few months. Reportedly, he will team up with Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja for an out and out commercial drama which is tentatively titled as Maha Samudram. The regular shooting will commence once Ravi Teja wraps up his upcoming film Disco Raja.

As per the latest buzz, Ajay Bhupathi has roped in happening beauty Aditi Rao Hydari as the leading lady opposite Ravi Teja. It is learnt that Aditi is mighty pleased with the storyline and immediately gave the nod to the project. She liked her character arc and signed the dotted line to share screen with Ravi Teja.

Aditi Rao made her debut in Telugu with Sammohanam and appeared in Varun Tej’s Anthariksham.

After a series of debacles, Ravi Teja calmed down and is focused on his next film Disco Raja, a sci-fi thriller that is made on a massive budget. VI Anand is the director and the first schedule of the film got completed recently. With a long gap between schedules, there are number of speculations making rounds that the film got shelved after the makers slashed down the budget and Ravi Teja was left unhappy.

Keeping an end to all the speculations, the film’s producer Ram Talluri made an announcement that the next schedule of Disco Raja will start from May 27th. Payal Rajput is the female lead and SS Thaman will compose the tunes and background score. Disco Raja will release during the second half of this year and Ravi Teja is pretty confident on the film.

Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja is having a tough time to finalise his next projects. As all his recent films ended as box office failures, he is giving no room for hit-or-miss scripts. He is looking for bound scripts with universal content rather than those which connect with the target audience. After tasting an embarrassing flop with Amar Akbar Anthony, he is very much indecisive to give nod to new projects.

He was supposed to work with Santosh Srinivas for Theri remake and also with VI Anand for a film titled as Described Disco Raja. While Theri remake was put on the back burner after commencing its shoot, Disco Raja is still in the pre-production phase. Ravi Teja is not fully convinced with the scripts of both these films. So, he has put Theri remake on hold. He also gave ample time to VI Anand to come up with a watertight script that will be a surefire box office success.

Close sources revealed that he is suggesting some changes to VI Anand’s final script, so the shooting has been delayed. He also asked the director to minimise the budget as much as possible. Once he is convinced with the changes, the film will go on floors. Meanwhile, he has also kept director Gopichand Malineni in waiting mode.

Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja is very cautious about signing films after tasting a string of flops in recent times. He has already shelved one project under Mythri Movie Makers production which is to be directed by Santosh Srinivas. He has agreed to work with critically acclaimed director VI Anand for an interesting film which is titled as Disco Raja.

The first look poster of Disco Raja was officially launched on January 26th as a birthday treat for Ravi Teja. However, the regular shooting of Disco Raja hasn’t yet started. Meanwhile, speculations are rife in media and industry circles that the script of Ravi Teja – VI Anand film has close similarities with Samantha’s upcoming film O Baby which is a Korean remake. Reportedly, VI Anand also came up with a similar story for Ravi Teja’s film.

Ravi Teja has reportedly requested VI Anand to rework on the script and complete it before taking the movie on sets. As per the reports, VI Anand is currently busy giving finishing touches to the script to avoid any controversies in future. Ram Talluri is going to produce the film.

Srinu Vaitla was once named as one of the top directors of Telugu cinema. However his poor track record left the top director earn nothing for his recent projects. Though he has been paid hefty remuneration for Aagadu and Bruce Lee, Srinu Vaitla had to cut down his pay cheque for Mister. After the film ended up as a dud, Srinu Vaitla had to pay back a part from his remuneration. His recent outing Amar Akbar Anthony too failed to repeat the magic and Srinu Vaitla’s work has been badly criticized.

He has been asked to share the profits from the film and he wrapped up the film on a promised strict budget of Rs 24 crores. Amar Akbar Anthony managed to recover Rs 20 crores through the satellite rights (Telugu and Hindi) and the digital rights (Amazon Prime). The film’s makers Mythri Movie Makers released the film on their own and Srinu Vaitla was promised half of the theatrical share of Amar Akbar Anthony as pay. The film registered poor openings and with the poor word of mouth, Amar Akbar Anthony’s theatrical share will stand close to Rs 6 crores. Hence Srinu Vaitla will take nothing home for the project. The ace director had to pay the salaries of his associates and writers from his pocket informed a close source.

The digital rights of Amar Akbar Anthony turned out to be a saviour else the makers would have lost the entire investment of the film because of the poor show of Amar Akbar Anthony at the box-office.

Santosh Srinivas alias Vasu is known for his movies Hyper and Kandireega. Mytri producers as we all know had given an advance to Pawan Kalyan to work on the remake of Theri. The team worked on the subject for many months and in this process Pawan Kalyan got busy with his political career and said he will do it later. Meanwhile instead of wasting time the producers roped in Ravi Teja in Pawan Kalyan’s place. Ravi Teja was in a dilemma on the project that needed to be started first and went ahead with Vytla’s. Now that they realized Touch Chesi Chudu and Theri has similarities, the subject is being dumped. Also a fresh story is in place now and Ravi Teja gave the green signal. Though Kandireega was a hit, Rabasa was a disaster and Hyper underperformed at the box office. So out of the recent three, one worked. The next director is Vi Anand. His Tiger did not work collections wise, Kshanam was a flop. The next was a hit..Ekkadiki pothavu chinnavada. Vi Anand’s current story is a scifi thriller and this will be the first time he is going to work with a star hero. The producers of Ravi Teja’s films have to be extra careful as they too dished out disasters. Ram Talluri’s Nela Ticket tanked and so did Mytri’s Amar Akbar Anthony. Ravi Teja is in no mood to reduce his remuneration, his producers will have to reign in the directors and the hero too has to cross check and make sure the script doesn’t lose out on logic .

Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja joined hands with Sreenu Vaitla for the fourth time and he is playing a triple role for the first time in his career. Titled as Amar Akbar Anthony, the film has Ileana as the female lead. Majority of the film’s shoot happened in USA.

Can Ravi Teja and Sreenu Vaitla bounce back with AAA ? Let’s find out.

Story:

Amar Akbar Anthony is a revenge drama based on ‘Dissociative identity disorder’. In 2003, Two Indian families, from New York City get killed by their business partners. The victims’ family members Amar (Raviteja), Aishu (Ileana) attempt to take revenge on the culprits – however both Amar / Aishu have dissociative identity disorder. Rest of the story is how Amar takes revenge overcoming his disorder.

Analysis:

Multiple personality disorder-based crime genre film is good to have with an upcoming star or small heroes. Attempting this serious film with Raviteja, who is known for his entertainment, is an experiment but unfortunately did not work out. Especially when the man behind the film Srinu Vaitla, audience would expect decent entertainment – if not a laugh riot. The film takes off in New York city on large canvas and up until 2003story isnarrated, the backdrop appears somewhat different. After being shifted to present day, the three main characters Amar, Akbar and Anthony may confuse audience rather than generate curiosity in first half. There is only one duet in first half which lowers further the commercial side of the film.

The comedy track written on Telugu Organizations in USA has srinu vaitla mark on it, but did not click much. Especially audience in India may not comprehend the fun about those Telugu organization leaders. Comedian Satya character as Jr. K.A. Paul irritates.

Second half opens in a bit interesting manner as the flashback is narrated. This part is better compared to rest of the film. However, after the flashback ends, movie graph goes down even more. Comedian Sunil is bit of an exception but sadly he couldn’t rescue. Last song came out well on screen. Production values by Mythri movie makers are very good and entire film has been shot in USA.

Performances:

The usually energetic Raviteja looks quite pale in this film. Because of the characterization, he has to appear passive throught the film – which disappoints his fans. Ileana is not attractive anymore as heroine and a misfit for Aishu / Pooja role. Sayaji Shinde got a good lengthy role in this film. There are numerous villains in this film – not much to rave about them though.

Technical:

S.S. Thaman’s songs are disappointing except last one. Cinematography by Venkat Dileep C. is fine, he is able to capture many USA locations well. The visuals appear grand in many scenes. Many american technicians worked as stunt coordinators but the whole effort is not backed by the script.:

  • Good production values
  • Different backdrop to the story

Negatives :

  • Lack of entertainment
  • Poor revenge plot
  • Songs and commercial elements are a miss

Verdict:

‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ is yet another disappointing film from Srinu Vaitla. Contrary to his strength – comedy, the director has attempted a serious film with mass star Raviteja and seems to be paid price. This serious natured revenge drama may find it difficult to survive at the Box-office.

Interestingly, the box office result of Amar Akbar Anthony is very crucial for the lead pair, the director and the production house. Ravi Teja is struggling to score a decent hit from a long time. His recent films couldn’t resonate with audience and failed to make a mark at box office. He is playing a triple role for the first time in his career. Teasers and trailers revealed that he is back in elements with good energy levels and comic timing.

Ileana is desperate to revive her career in Tollywood. She was off the limelight for quite some time. She now wants to start her second innings in style with a decent hit. Her glam quotient will be an added advantage for AAA.

Director Sreenu Vaitla wants to reclaim his mojo with AAA. Known for churning out full length entertainers, Vaitla has lost touch with back to back debacles. He is now coming up with a different attempt keeping his comedy forte intact. He is very confident of making a strong comeback with this film.

On the other side, star production house Mythri Movie Makers is aiming to get back to success track after a small blip in their streak of hits with Naga Chaitanya’s Savyasachi. They are ensuring that AAA get good publicity with aggressive promotions. The openings and the first weekend run is going to be very crucial for AAA.
