66th National Awards: Where did Rangasthalam tumble?

    0

The moment 66th National Awards are announced, many Telugu audiences who anticipated that Ram Charan and Sukumar’s superhit bonanza Rangasthalam will clean sweep some categories, got pretty upset. That too, it bagged an award for Sound Mixing which none expected at all.

If we look at the reasons why Rangasthalam tumbled, there are not plenty, but only a few logical ones. For example, they couldn’t pick Rangasthalam over Mahanati in Best Film Regional category because the story of legendary actress Savitri is always a better film no matter how much it collected at the box office.

Ram Charan has delivered extraordinary performance in the role of hearing-impaired Chittibabu but that falls short of Ayushman and Vicky Kaushal’s work in Andhadhun and Uri respectively. Because Ayushman has used contact lenses that block his eyesight by 80% to film certain scenes in this movie and learned piano daily for six hours to play it for real in many scenes. So naturally, that effort is significant than what Charan has done for Rangasthalam. Coming to Vicky, with URI being a patriotic film and with BJP in power, it is politically logical to include his name on the list.

If we have to talk about Sukumar’s direction and screenplay, Rangasthalam is a pure commercial masala movie whereas the likes of Chi La Sow are a bit realistic films without any masala. Naturally, these Award Juries honour realistic looking films most of the time. We have to notice that the likes of Padmaavat also didn’t grab any awards.

At the end of the day, tumbling to get an award will not imply that Rangasthalam is not a worthy movie.

Telugu Cinema gets into serious mode

Probably from the late 1980s or the early of 1990s, Telugu cinema has witnessed a changed with commercial factor playing a crucial role. High octane fight sequences, comedy track, colorful songs and the mid 2000s brought a trend of item numbers, remained as pillars of a film’s success for a decade or so.

But again, as audience always look for something new, over the last couple of years, there is a change too and it happened inevitably. Audiences have started accepting films that are serious in nature despite the same old plot. But that’s not the case of a filmmaker who would like to make a film in every possible genre and at the same time, the success is what takes him/her forward. Nonetheless we have very few directors been experimenting and incorporating a social message with commercial elements.

Directors Koratala Siva set this trend with ‘Srimanthudu,’ ‘Janatha Garage’ and ‘Bharat Ane Nenu.’ Though the first two films have a regular story, ‘Bharat Ane Nenu’ is one of the boldest attempts in the recent times and it is sort of an awareness film for the audience. ‘Rangasthalam’ is another example of a serious drama and it’s been a while Telugu audience have witnessed a proper village drama with rustic approach. The characters in the film will remain for a long-long time.

The latest edition is ‘Aravindha Sametha Veera Raghava.’ A combination of Jr NTR and Trivikram is anticipated with loads of entertainment, punch dialogues, songs in lavish abroad locations and blah.. blah… blah. Surprising everyone, this film stuck to its core point and it clearly lacked the comedy track (that’s critics’ words). As the audiences are the ultimate deciders, ‘Aravindha Sametha’ is on its way to become a biggest hit in NTR’s career.

All we can says is trend changes and so does the time!

‘Rangamma Mangamma’ song eyeing top spot

    0

The Rangamma Mangamma song from Ram Charan’s rustic entertainer Rangasthalam is one of the biggest chartbuster hits in recent times. The song received a terrific response from music lovers for its highly infectious tune rendered by DSP and the brilliant voice of singer Manasi. The mesmerising visuals on screen offered an eye feast for audience.

As soon the makers of Rangasthalam released the video song in YouTube, it has garnered millions of views. In a month after its official release, the video version has clocked more than 40 million views. At this rate, Rangamma Mangamma will be the next big thing among Tollywood video songs.

Super hit songs like ‘Vachinde’ from Fidaa and Saahore Baahubali from Baahubali 2 are the most viewed video songs in Telugu with more than 120 Million views each. Both these songs were released ten months ago in YouTube.

Looking at the current rage with which Rangamma Mangamma song is clocking million of views, it has a good chance of toppling both Vachinde and Saahore Baahubali song in a lesser time than the time taken by both the songs to hit the mark.

“Rangasthalam celebrates 50-day run in the US”

It’s been a glorious time for blockbuster village drama Rangasthalam at the box office. While the film has been going strong at the ticket windows attracting more audiences even after over a month of release.

And now, the film has completed a landmark 50-day run at the cinema halls. What’s interesting is that the film has done so well in the US market that the elated US distributors of the film, Creative Cinemas NY are celebrating the success.

The Creative Cinemas NY distribution house decided to donate the collections of the film from the screens in Columbus, Ohio, on its 50th day to a charitable organisation H2O.

Amazon online version didn’t affect Rangasthalam theatrical run?

    2

Rangasthalam online version is released on Amazon Prime now. Even though makers tried to postpone it further as theatrical run of the movie is still good, Amazon has decided to release as per the agreement. But surprisingly, this hasn’t affected theatrical run of the movie significantly.

Rangasthalam is holding some good records as of now – like 2 crore gros in RTC X Roads, still running in more than 100 centers and running towards 50 days, and individual single screen records in several small towns. Rangasthalam also holding Non-Baahubali records in most of the theaters . In RTC X roads, Rangsthalam grossed 2 crores in 47 days, making it fastest to do so after Bahubali-2. Even Baahubali 1 took more than 80 days to reach that mark in RTC X Roads.

There was no significant drop in the revenues immediately after the release of online version in Amazon and it proves – if content is really good, not just the piracy but even official release of online version also can’t do much damage to the film.

Ready for Amazon stream, Rangasthalam still bringing good revenues

    0

Ram Charan starrer Rangasthalam emerged as the biggest non-Baahubali hit of Tollywood with over 200 Crores worldwide gross till now. Trade circles have already declared it as a genuine blockbuster because distributors from all areas have pocketed handsome profits.

Surprisingly, Rangasthalam is still holding well despite the fact that it is going to be streamed in Amazon Prime very soon. Even after completing 6 weeks, the rustic entertainer is raking in decent shares in B and C centres. In some areas, the collections are on par with other films which released 3-4 weeks after Rangasthalam. On weekends, the film is running with packed houses in major areas.

This is a phenomenal once in a decade run for a Telugu film barring the Baahubali franchise.

The makers have tried to postpone the Amazon Prime release as it is still bringing good collections. But, as per the agreement, it is going to be available on Amazon Prime this 14th.

Superb season: Summer of career bests

This summer season seems to be very superb for Tollywood as it gave career best moments for the stars, directors and production banners.

Tollywood kick-started this summer with Rangasthalam that not only became biggest hit in the career of Ram Charan, Sukumar and Mythri makers, it also transformed Ram Charan into ’s career as it into very good actor from a regular star. It also redefined Sukumar’s image from ‘overseas’ director into director of all classes as he got his biggest hit in ‘B’, ‘C’ centers till date. Mythri’s first hattrick made them most sought after production house in Tollywood.

Next big movie Bharat Ane Nenu continued the up-trend and went on to become one of the biggest hits in career of Mahesh Babu and made Koratala Siva most sought after director in Tollywood. Next big movie that was released is Allu Arjun “Naa Peru Surya” that is not a hit at box office, but it brought out Allu Arjun’s career best performance as military person.

Then, Mahanati movie, that was released couple of days back turns out to be the biggest classic hit in the career of Vyjayanthi movies banner. Ashwini Dutt used to tell that even though he made great commercial hits with Chiranjeevi and NTR, he was never able to make a movie that is on par with classic like Shankarabaranam. Ashwini Dutt this is now an elated man he got such a classic hit in the form of Mahanati. This is the first biggest hit for the banner after his daughters took over the production and so it is even more memorable for him as a father.

Heroine Samantha to tweeted recently that – this is the happiest season in her career as she got hattrick hits as well as great applause for her roles. She got hattrick with Rangasthalam, Mahanati and Irumbu Thirai. All the three movies are commercial hits as well as brought her good name.

Finally, Keerthi Suresh got her career best performance this summer as her reprisal of Savithri role bringing her accolades from so many great actors as well as the audience. Probably she will be remembered for this role for years to come.

Overall, this has been a superb summer for Tollywood!

Ram Charan unhappy with needless comparisons

    0

When two big ticket films release during the same season, there is enough room for fan wars in social media about collections and other box office parameters.

Recently, Ram Charan’s Rangasthalam and Mahesh Babu’s Bharat Ane Nenu have released in the span of three weeks and emerged as super hits. As both films have been carrying huge expectations among trade circles, fans have eagerly waited to see which one will emerge as a winner in Summer.

Meanwhile, Charan expressed displeasure over the comparisons that are being made to decide which is a better film. The Rangasthalam actor has opined it is a such a senseless attempt to compare two successful films which have come at the right time for industry.

Charan negated the divide and rule policy and said film industry works as an united organisation. He also added that both he and Mahesh are good friends and expressed happiness over the success of both films.

Excerpts of Ram Charan’s Interview with Rajeev Masand

    4

Mega Powerstar Ram Charan has been riding high with the success of his recent outing Rangasthalam. Senior journalist Rajeev Masand recorded an interview with Ram Charan in which he discussed about the success of Rangasthalam, his future projects, his interaction with his family and how he has been leading a smooth life. Here are the excerpts of his interview in Ram Charan’s words:

I am overwhelmed with the response of Rangasthalam. This brought a fresh energy to do interesting films.

We shot Rangasthalam in the remote villages of Godavari region and this really helped up build our characters in the film. One fine morning I went for a drive with a fisherman and he showed me the way they catch fish and it was a nice experience. Their care for nature has been extremely inspiring.

I felt that Chitti Babu connected to every human being. Since last year, things changed completely. My wife still says that I am changed. I grew as a person every year and am passionate for films. I have my foot on my ground because of my father Megastar Chiranjeevi.

It is because of the discipline of my father, his career lasted this long. We have discussed very little about cinema in the recent years. My father keeps a watch on me poking at 9 PM everyday despite of his busy day about my whereabouts. “Just sleep on time” says my dad.

Like my father who switches off from work after 6 PM, I too behave so and my wife is pretty happy about me spending time with her and she has no complaints.

I don’t even know anything about SS Rajamouli’s film and me, Tarak are expecting a narration by the end of this summer. I am looking forward for the narration and I signed the film because of SS Rajamouli. I can assure you that the film will not be on boxing.

Tarak and me turned thick friends and we have been meeting frequently. My wife hosted a lavish party for the sweet couple on their anniversary. Rajamouli too wanted us to bond together.

Rajamouli already opened the market for Telugu films across International scale and our next film too will release in multiple languages. My next with Rajamouli and Tarak will start anytime after October.

I am disappointed with the result of Zanjeer. I am doing lot of interesting work here and I am not keen on doing Bollywood movies. I want to reach larger audience through my films. I am glad that there are strong content driven films in Telugu cinema currently which is a huge move.

I am not on social media and I am in plans to make my debut soon on instagram. My wife too wants me to start so as to reach my fans and followers.

Be it in politics or business, no one encourages casting couch. I have five sisters at home, I will not support casting couch. Because of Sri Reddy’s case, MAA formed a committee and they are finding out the facts. This will sure bring lot of security in the future for women.

I feel naked after I lost my bearded look of Rangasthalam now. I am back to gym and my director Boyapati Srinu is calling every alternate day about my workouts. No more Hyderabadi biryanis from now for a while. I guess I should follow my uncle Pawan Kalyan who works for one film a year and shoots for six months. The rest of six months he keeps travelling with his family.

After giving the career best openings for Charan with a solid start on Thursday premiers, Rangasthalam went on to notch up sensational revenues in the first week. Not stopping there, the film entered the $ 3 M club with its consistent run in US.

By surpassing Mahesh Babu’s Srimanthudu, Rangasthalam emerged as the biggest non-Baahubali hit and also the highest grossing film in Sukumar and Charan’s career.

Despite the release of new films like Bharat Ane Nenu and Avengers, Rangasthalam refused to slow down and touched the magical $ 3.5 M in US.

Ram Charan’s career best performance and Sukumar’s emotional narration and good dose drama and entertainment have helped the film big time. The presence of star cast like Samantha, Aadhi Pinisetty, Jagapathi Babu and Prakash Raj and top notch production values by Mythri Movie Makers have come in handy for the film.

Rangasthalam released through Creative Cinemas NY in overseas.
