Tollywood Summer 2023: A Wasted Season

0

Summer and Sankranthi are the best seasons for films in Tollywood. A bunch of big-budget films and those featuring stars will release every year during the holiday season. 2023 is badly wasted as there are no big releases. All the star actors are absent during the season. Some of the promising actors like Ravi Teja, Sai Tej, Naga Chaitanya, Allari Naresh, Gopichand, Akhil and Kiran Abbavaram tested their luck. Except Sai Tej’s Virupaksha, none of the Telugu films failed to register even the minimum openings. Virupaksha ended up as a blockbuster and is the biggest hit in the career of Sai Tej.

Ravi Teja’s Ravanasura, Kiran Abbavaram’s Meter, Samantha’s Shaakuntalam, Akhil’s Agent, Gopichand’s Ramabanam, Allari Naresh’s Ugram, Naga Chaitanya’s Custody, Santosh Shoban’s Anni Manchi Sakunamule and others have been declared as disasters. They performed way below the markets of the actors. Dubbing films Bichagadu 2 and 2018 have been decent and they will end up as profitable films for the buyers. Summer 2023 is completely wasted and the season witnessed one super hit through Virupaksha.

Chitti Babu responds to Samantha’s jibe

0

While Samantha Ruth Prabhu had a cryptic hit back to producer Chitti Babu through a social media post for saying her career is over and she is playing cheap tactics to promote her films. Samantha gave it back strong by posting a screen slide of a Google search for hair growth in ears.

Chitti Babu now responded to Sam’s jibe. In a recent interview, he said, I have hair in many parts of my body and I have no objection to study and report on it. He also said that Samantha is not 18-20 age to play the iconic beauty role of ‘Shakuntala’. I mean that the actress should play roles supporting her age by accepting the truth, Chitti Babu concluded.

Pan-Indian failures from Telugu Cinema

0

Telugu cinema and Telugu films reached a new place after the release of Baahubali franchise. Films like RRR, KGF: Chapter 2 and Kantara made enough noise at the Indian box-office last year. Telugu cinema has a chart of films that will release across the nation. Films like Micheal, Dasara and Shaakuntalam released across the nation and failed badly. Ravi Teja’s Ravanasura was announced as a pan-Indian film but it did not release in any other language due to various reasons. Akhil Akkineni’s Agent is hitting the screens on April 28th and is made on a huge budget.

The film is releasing in Telugu and Malayalam due to the last-day rush. The shoot is completed recently and the dubbing work is yet to conclude. Pan-Indian release needs a proper planning and a grand promotional plan. A bunch of films from young actors are announced for pan-Indian release but there should be takers or those who have to come ahead and bear the digital expenses. It is quite easy for the makers to release posters with pan-Indian release but it is not so easy for any film to have a grand release across the nation in all the major languages.

Shaakuntalam turns out to be a jolt for Dil Raju

Shaakuntalam featuring Samantha released on Friday and it turned out to be a dud. Even Samantha’s presence could not save the film and the periodic drama opened on a poor note. Dil Raju backed the film and he sounded super confident on the film. He even screened the film for the audience in advance. The latest update says that Dil Raju is losing close to Rs 20 crores through Shaakuntalam. The film’s non-theatrical rights are sold for Rs 40 crores. The makers have to recover Rs 25 crores through the theatrical revenue.

Shaakuntalam made nothing in other languages and Dil Raju will be losing Rs 20 crores. The South satellite rights of the film remained unsold because of the high quotes. With the film ending up as a dud, there would be no takers for the rights. Dil Raju has been calculative and he delivered decent hits as a producer and as a distributor too. Shaakuntalam turned out to be a huge jolt for the star producer.

Dil Raju’s Shaakuntalam Strategy badly goes Wrong

1

Top producer Dil Raju backed Shaakuntalam that had Samantha in the lead role. Gunasekhar directed the film and it headed for a pan-Indian release yesterday. The footfalls for the film are quite poor. Dil Raju screened the film on Monday and the negative buzz started from the premiere show. The special screening had a huge impact on the openings of Shaakuntalam. Several posted negative reviews on social media.

Dil Raju’s strategy failed badly for Shaakuntalam. He also planned many more premieres but the plan was changed after the negative reviews started pouring in from the Monday premiere show. The film also opened on a poor note in all the released languages. Gunasekhar himself produced Shaakuntalam.

Vijay Deverakonda’s heartfelt letter to Samantha

1

Samantha’s Shaakuntalam film was released today and the actress promoted this pan-Indian film rigorously. This is the biggest film in Samantha’s career to date. As support for the actress, her next film Kushi’s co-actor Vijay Deverakonda took his social media account and wrote a letter as support for her upcoming film’s release.

Vijay Deverakonda wrote, “You are so full of love, always wanting to do right, spread cheer, still giving your everything for each shot in a film as if your entire career depends on it. The world might never know what a fighter you have been the past 1 year, always trying to put a smile and your best foot forward for your teams, films and fans even though your body needs a break, needs rest. I wish you all luck for #Shaakuntalam tomorrow. Your will and the love of millions will always keep you safe. It will all be well.”

The sweet gesture of Vijay Deverakonda is viral now. Shaakuntalam is said to be mounted on a large scale and is adapted from the Kalidasa writings Abhignana Shaakuntalam.

Shaakuntalam Movie Review : Epic Failure

Shaakuntalam Movie Review

Shaakuntalam Movie Review

Telugu360 Rating 2/5

Gunasekhar is one of the directors who paved the way for the Telugu film industry toward big films. He is a director who is tempted to show the movie to the audience with emotions. He also has a good grasp of mythology. At the very beginning of his career, he received the National Award for Bala Ramayanam. Later he did a historical film like Rudramadevi. His latest film Shaakuntalam is based on a Sanskrit play Abhignana Sakuntalam written by Kalidasa. Abhignana Saakuntalam is a classic in Indian literature. Kalidasa’s writing style captivated the readers. But bringing such classics to the screen is also a challenge. Has Guna Sekhar succeeded in conveying the feeling of this love poem to the audience?

Story: Menaka, who came to break Vishwamitra’s penance on the order of Indra, comes physically close to the sage. As a result, a girl child is born. But that child conceived by humans has no entry into the divine world. With this, Menaka leaves the child in the asramam. A group of birds called Sakunthalamus abandons the child in the Kanvashram area. Kanva Maharshi (Sachin Khadekar) names the child Shakuntala (Samantha) and adopts it. The king of Hastinapuram is Dusyanta (Dev Mohan) comes to Kanvasrama while hunting wild animals. Seeing that Shakuntala is like an apsara, he falls in love at first sight. Shakuntala also likes Dusyantha and both get married in Gandharva style. Dusyanta promises Shakuntala that he will invite her to the kingdom with royal courtesies and introduce her to the people as a queen, gives her a signet ring, and leaves for the kingdom. Shakuntala becomes pregnant and after waiting months to see Dushyanta she goes to the kingdom of Dusyanta. But when she goes to Dushyanta’s kingdom, she faces an unexpected defeat in a full house. Seeing Shakuntala, Dusyanta says that he does not remember who he really is. At the same time, Shakuntala also loses the ring gifted by Dushyanta. As a result, everyone marks her as conspiring to bring disrepute to the Maharaja. How did Dushyanta forget Shakuntala? Why did he forget? How did Shakuntala lose her ring? Did Dusyantha remember the past again? That is the rest of the story.

Analysis :

Original story writer Kalidasa’s writing style is amazing. His imagination, narrative style, the sculpture makes the reader mesmerized. Abhignana Sakuntalam is also a wonderful work. Director Gunasekhar’s effort to capture such a work with the camera and unveil it on the silver screen is commendable, but it seems that the director’s imagination and skill are not enough to bring that work to the screen and mesmerize the audience. While filming such a classic as a movie, the judgment of what should be shot, what should be shown, and what is necessary for the movie should be very strong. Gunasekhar faltered in many places in this regard. The story begins with the episode of Chinnari Shakuntulam. The visuals of Kanvashram are impressive. The sage Kanva who saw a child in a tree bush tells the story of Menaka and Vishwamitra. But this story has been adjusted with sketch images.
The key moment is supposed to be the introduction of Shakuntula and Dusyanta. One gets the feeling that Gunasekhar has shot this scene very regularly. The depth of their love does not connect with the audience. Dushyanthu looks like a hero in an average commercial movie, but the sentimentality of the writing does not come across. The next scenes were stretched. In the middle, the track of Asura Mooka KalaNemi, and the anecdotes told by the friends in the ashram reduce the intensity of this love poem. The story takes a turn after the debut of Mohan Babu as Muni Durvasa. But it is not very impressive to show that this character’s entry is just for a twist. The major flaw in the movie is the audience will not connect with her pain and sorrow. The humiliation meted out to the Shakuntis in a full house is heartening. After knowing the truth, Dusyanthu’s search for love is not impressive. The track Menaka, who is moved by the sufferings of her daughter on the earth reminds us of a daily serial scene. The war between the Asuras and the Gods is also very cheap. Allu Arha’s presence before the end is impressive.

Performances: Carrying mythological characters is not easy. Samantha, who played the title role did her best. The emotional scenes are well done. But even in the love scenes, there is some pain in her eyes. This gives the feeling of the same expression in many places. Dev Mohan is good in the role of Dushyant but his chemistry with Samantha did not work. The love story would have been more connected if a star with some image was taken that role. Ananya, Madhubala, Sachin, Gautami, Shivabalaji all the other actors are adequate. Allu Arha looked good. Many of the 3D effects look erroneous. Especially the heads coming forward like a stork made it difficult to see. Mani Sharma’s songs are dull but the background music is good. The dialogues are not very impressive.

Original Sakunthulam is a beautiful love poem. Gunasekhar failed in making it a visual poem on the silver screen.

When Samantha struggled to get clothes from designers; was asked ‘Who are you?’

Actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu recalled how she and her colleagues down south were disrespected in the past over clothes.

In an interview, the 35-year-old actress spoke about how far regional films have come in recent years, with movies in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada out running Hindi cinema at the box-office.

‘Samantha was our only choice for this epic’, says ‘Shaakuntalam’ director

0

Actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who swayed the nation with her moves in ‘Oo Antava’, was the only choice for ‘Shaakuntalam’, the director of the film revealed.

Director Gunasekhar kept Samantha in mind while penning the script of the historical drama.

Elaborating on the same, Gunasekhar said: “When I wanted to make the eternal love story of Shakuntala and Dushyant in an interesting backdrop of a beautiful whimsical forest much like a forest princess in a Disney kind of film, I wanted someone who could be relatable to the millennial audiences, and felt Samantha would be apt for this film and approached her.”

The filmmaker also believes that Samantha fitted the role perfectly and that no one could have essayed it better than her.

“The film traces the emotional journey of a woman who falls in love and the challenges fate throws at her. She’s a character of inner strength who depicts her emotions with dignity and grace in all that she does. Her truth is her strength, all these emotions can only be portrayed by a wonderful performer like Samantha and she was our only choice to be able to create this epic”, he added.

‘Shaakuntalam’ is set to release on April 14 in cinemas.

Biggest challenge for Samantha’s Shaakuntalam

1

Samantha has high hopes on Shaakuntalam, a big-budget drama and a pan-Indian film that is heading for April 14th release. The actress is promoting the film in all the languages currently. Gunasekhar directed and produced this film. Samantha plays the role of Shakuntala in this film. The trailer looked promising but it sounded slow-paced. Dil Raju, the presenter of the film too expressed his confidence on the project.

The audience are keen to watch realistic attempts, native films and action dramas. Films like KGF: Chapter 2 and Kantara have been super hits in all the languages. A film like Shaakuntalam should be highly impressive to end up as a super hit. The buzz among the common audience is quite low. Shaakuntalam is a periodic drama. Gunasekhar is also quoting high prices for the non-theatrical deals which are yet to be closed. Dil Raju will release the film across the Telugu states. Samantha sounds super confident on the film.
