Veteran actor and South star Suriya, who recently won the national award for best actor for Soorarai Pottru, is now collaborating with director Siva for his next project. KE Gnanavel Raja is presenting the film while UV Creations are producing it. Vamsi Krishna and Pramod are the producers. This project is tentatively titled Suriya 42 and it commenced the shoot on 8th August.

The makers unveiled the motion poster of Suriya 42 a short while ago and it carries an intense vibe and it gives a glimpse of Suriya’s characterisation and look in the film. He looks sharp and dapper in the motion poster. DSP’s background score for the motion poster and the visuals gel well to create a lasting impact.

There is a lot of grandeur. Suriya 42 will be shot on a lavish scale and it has Disha Patani playing the female lead. The film is directed by action filmmaker Siva. “A mighty valiant saga” the tagline reads and that is to be considered as a depiction of the film.

The film is releasing in 10 langauges. The release date will be announced soon. More details about the project will be out in the due course.

Suriya begins shooting for Siva’s action entertainer

Actor Suriya began shooting for director Siva’s upcoming action entertainer, tentatively titled #Suriya42, on Wednesday.

The film was formally flagged off with a pooja ceremony on Sunday. Taking to Twitter, Suriya said: “Shoot begins! Need all your blessings!”

Director Siva said: “Sai Sai. Very happy to start our new project with the blessings of God and best wishes of all the fans, media friends, cinema lovers, well wishers. Thank you Surya sir, Studiogreen, UV Creations. Siva and team #Suriya42.”

The film is being produced by Studio Green Gnanavel Raja and Devi Sri Prasad is the music composer. Cinematography for the film is by Vetri Palanisamy, who had filmed superhits such as the Ajith-starrer ‘Veeram’ and ‘Vedalam’.

Richard Kevin, who did a fine job editing superhits such as the critically acclaimed ‘Vikram Vedha’ and the recently released web series ‘Suzhal’, has been brought onboard as the film’s editor.

Madras HC quashes FIR against Tamil actor Suriya, Jai Bhim Director Gnanavel

The Madras High Court on Thursday quashed a First Information Report (FIR) against Tamil actor Suriya and Director of Jai Bhim movie, T.J. Gnanavel.

The FIR was registered at the Velachery police station, Chennai for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the Vanniyar community by portraying it in a bad light in the movie, ‘Jai Bhim’.

The FIR was lodged on May 17 at the instance of the Advocate of Rudra Vanniyar Sena, K. Santosh. Justice N. Satish Kumar of the Madras High Court allowed a joint petition filed by the actor and director to quash the FIR registered against them.

The petitioners in their plea stated that the movie ‘Jai Bhim’ was based upon a case in which retired Judge of Madras High Court, Justice K. Chandru had conducted while he was a practicing lawyer. It stated that except for his name and that of the Inspector General of Police, Perumalswamy, the names of all other characters were changed.

The actor and director of the movie said that they did not want to use the real names of the characters as most of them had undergone the full prison term and were still alive. The movie was given an ‘A’ certificate by the Censor Board and was released only on the OTT platform, thereby limiting the number of viewers who could watch it.

The movie, according to the petitioners, was well received across the world and was appreciated by all sections of the people without any caste or creed affiliations. The movie also won several acclaims and awards including the Dadasaheb Phalke Film Festival award, the JFW Award, and the Boston International Film Festival Award.

The filmmakers said that the Chairman of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry P.S. Amalraj also wrote a letter to the director appreciating the movie, ‘Jai Bhim’.

The petitioners said that despite all these accolades and positive responses, the complainant had approached the Metropolitan Magistrate court in Saidapet, Chennai, and obtained an order on May 6 to register an FIR against the filmmakers.

It may be noted that the Rudra Vanniyar Sena and the complainant were aggrieved over the villain being named ‘Gurumurthy’ and a calendar of the Vanniyar Sangam was hanging behind his seat in a scene. This has led to the Vanniyar community coming out against the movie actor Suriya and director, T.S. Gjanavel.

Suriya dedicates National Best Actor Award to ‘my kids and loving family’

Expressing gratitude to mentors, family, friends and fans, actor Suriya, who jointly won the National Award for Best Actor for his performance in ‘Soorarai Pottru’ along with Ajay Devgn, dedicated the award to his children, Diya and Dev, and to his family.

Soon after congratulatory messages began pouring in on Friday, when the 68th National Film Awards were announced in New Delhi, Suriya took to Twitter to express his gratitude.

He said, “Vanakkam, My heartfelt thanks for all the love and good wishes that has reached us and enriched our lives so far.We are ecstatic with the five National Awards for ‘Soorarai Pottru’. The overwhelming reception for our film, which was released directly on OTT during a pandemic, has made our eyes well up in joy.”

“Our happiness is doubled at this National recognition for ‘Soorarai Pottru’ as it is a testimony of Sudha Kongara’s many years of hard work and creative vision of Captain Gopinath’s story.”

Congratulating other members of his team who had won the National Award, the actor said, “The Best Film Award is a great recognition for team 2D and I thank them along with my best friend and CEO Rajsekar Karpoorasundara Pandian.”

The actor also expressed his gratitude to the makers of his first film, ‘Nerukku Ner’. “I extend my gratitude to director Vasanth Sai and filmmaker Mani Ratnam, who placed their faith in my acting abilities and gave me my first film, ‘Nerukku Ner’,” Suriya said and congratulated his fellow awardee, Ajay Devgn and other award winners from Tamil Nadu and the other states of the country.

“My special thanks to my Jyotika, who insisted I should produce and act in ‘Soorarai Pottru’,” he said and added, “My love and ‘Thank You’ to all those who have encouraged my efforts so far and to my amma and appa, Karthi and Brinda, who have supported me always. I dedicate this award to my kids Diya and Dev and to my loving family.”

Looking to thank all his fans, whom he considers his brothers and sisters, Suriya said, “I share this joyous moment with all my brothers and sisters who are out there, who have shown me immense love and acceptance right through my career. My heartfelt thanks to you all my anbaana fans.”

Stating that the National Award had given him the motivation to work harder and walk his talk, the actor said that he would strive to give good films, now and always. He also thanked the government and the National Awards Jury for the recognition.

Tamil Nadu CM Stalin congratulates Suriya on being invited by the Academy

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has congratulated actor Suriya, who on Wednesday became the first actor from south India to receive an invite from the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which presents the Oscar Awards each year, to join it in 2022.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, while congratulating Suriya, said, the latter had become the first south Indian actor to receive an invite from the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines the winners of the Oscar Awards each year, to be a part of it.

The invite, the Chief Minister said, was a recognition of Suriya’s evolved acting skills and his choice of stories that were focussed on societal well being.

Late on Tuesday, the Academy released the list of 397 distinguished artistes and executives it had invited to join the organization in 2022.

Membership selection, the Academy said, was based on professional qualifications, “with an ongoing commitment to representation, inclusion and equity.”

This year’s class of invitees includes 71 Oscar nominees, including 15 winners.

Suriya and Kajol will be the members of the Academy Class 2022 which will have actors, directors, writers, editors and others from different countries of the world. Suriya’s cameo in Hindi remake of Sudha Kongara’s Tamil superhit ‘Soorarai Pottru’

Actor Suriya has done a cameo in the Hindi remake of director Sudha Kongara’s super hit Tamil film ‘Soorarai Pottru’, which was partly inspired by events from the life of Air Deccan founder Captain GR Gopinath.

Confirming that he had done a cameo in the film, Suriya tweeted, “Akshay Kumar sir to see you as Vir was nostalgic! Sudha Kongara, can see our story beautifully coming alive again #Maara! Enjoyed every minute with team ‘Soorarai Pottru’ Hindi in a brief cameo!”

Actor Suriya, who played the lead in the original, chose to participate in the pooja of the Hindi remake, which features Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madan in the lead.

The Hindi version is being produced by Suriya’s production house, 2D Entertainment, along with Abudantia Entertainment and Cape Good Films on a lavish scale. 2D Entertainment will be making its debut in Hindi film production with this film.

Sudha Kongara, who directed the Tamil version of ‘Soorarai Pottru’, is directing the Hindi version also. Niketh Bommi is the cinematographer of this film, which has music by G V Prakash.

Suriya had flown to Mumbai to participate in the inaugural function of the Hindi version, after Akshay Kumar made a request to him.

The film will be released on June 3 and stars Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, and Fahadh Faasil.

ET Trailer: Suriya’s High Voltage Mass Treat

‘Jai Bhim’ in World Competition segment of Pune film fest

Director Tha Se Gnanavel’s critically-acclaimed Tamil courtroom drama ‘Jai Bhim’ has made it to the World Competition segment of the 20th Pune International Film Festival, which is scheduled to be held from March 3 to 10.

The other films that are in this category are director Gabor Fabricius’s ‘Erasing Frank’ (Hungary), director Iciar Bollain’s ‘Maixabel’ (Spain), director Shawkat Amin Korki’s ‘The Exam’ (Germany, Iraq-kurdistan, Qatar), director Laura Wandel’s ‘Playground’ (Belgium), director Simon Holy’s ‘Zrcadla Ve Tme'(‘Mirrors in the Dark’) (Czech Republic), director Leonardo Antonio’s ‘Submission’ (Portugal, France), director Selman Nacar’s ‘Iki Safak Arasinda'(‘Between Two Dawns’) (Turkey, Romania, France, Spain), director Mohamed Diab’s ‘Amira’ (Egypt) and Aleksey German Jr.’s ‘House Arrest’ (Russia).

The Pune International Film Festival, a prestigious event, is Maharashtra’s official film festival.

2D Entertainment, the firm that produced ‘Jai Bhim’ shared its excitement at the film having made it to the Pune Film Festival’s World Competition segment.

Taking to Twitter, the production house said, “‘Jai Bhim’ makes it into the World Competition line up at PIFF India.”

Interestingly, ‘Jai Bhim’ was one of the Indian films that were on the list of 276 movies eligible for this year’s Academy Awards. However, it did not make it to the nominations.

Inspired by true events that happened in Tamil Nadu in the nineties, the film tells the moving story of an upright lawyer coming to the aid of poor, defenceless people from the Irular community who have no means to stand up to the might of an inhuman police force that seeks to exploit their helplessness and audaciously commits atrocity after atrocity on them with impunity.

US film scribe’s tweet boosts hopes of ‘Jai Bhim’ making it to Oscar nominations

A tweet by Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley has raised hopes that director Tha Se Gnanavel’s critically-acclaimed Tamil courtroom drama ‘Jai Bhim’, featuring actor Suriya, may make it to the nominations of the 94th Academy Awards that are expected to be announced later on Tuesday.

With just hours to go before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announces its list of Oscar nominations, New York Times Awards Season Columnist Kyle Buchanan tweeted a question to Jacqueline Coley. He asked her, “Which Oscar nomination could provoke the biggest reaction from you tomorrow morning?”

Responding to the question, Coley said, “‘Jai Bhim’ for Best Picture. Trust me on this one.”

Coley’s reply has triggered huge excitement in the Tamil film industry circles with Rajasekar Karpoorasundarapandian, the co-producer of ‘Jai Bhim’, responding to Coley’s tweet.

Quoting Coley’s tweet, Rajasekar said, “Thank you, this means a lot to us!”

Apart from ‘Jai Bhim’, Priyadarshan’s Malayalam period drama ‘Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’ (‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’), featuring Mohanlal in the lead, is also on the list of 276 movies eligible for this year’s Academy Awards.

The voting for Oscar nominations, which began on January 27, continued until February 1. Nominations for the 94th Academy Awards are be announced on Tuesday, February 8.

The ceremony is scheduled to be held on Sunday, March 27, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and will be televised on the American network ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide.

Suriya-starrer ‘Jai Bhim’ wins three awards at Noida International Film Fest

Director Tha Se Gnanavel’s critically acclaimed courtroom drama, ‘Jai Bhim’, featuring actors Suriya, Lijomol Jose and Manikandan in the lead, has won three awards at the Ninth Noida International Film festival, 2022.

The film fetched Suriya the Best Actor award and Lijomol Jose, the award for Best Actress. It also took home the award for Best Film. On Monday, Rajsekar Karpoorasundarapandian, the CEO of 2D Entertainment, the production house that produced the film, announced the news on twitter.

He tweeted that ‘Jai Bhim’ had won the Best Film, Best Actor for Suriya and Best Actress award for Lijomol Jose at the Noida International Film Festival 2022!

The film, which tells the moving story of an upright lawyer coming to the aid of poor, defenseless people from the Irular community who have no means to stand up to the might of an inhuman police force that seeks to exploit their helplessness and commits atrocity after atrocity on them with impunity, has been winning widespread acclaim ever since it released.
