Exclusive: TV9 to start 3 new news channels

TV9, numero uno channel in Telugu is all set to start 3 new channels – TV9 English, TV9 Tamil and TV9 Hindi. TV9 founded in 2004 and is owned by Associated Broadcasting Company Private Limited (ABCL) It has grown exponentially in last 14 years.and currently it has channels in other languages too , like – TV9 Kannada, TV9 Gujarati and TV9 Marathi. In Telugu too it has Jai Telangana TV ( formerly TV1). Now in addition to these 5 channels, TV9 is coming up with 3 new channels –

TV9 English,
TV9 Tamil and
TV9 Hindi.

TV9 English – . Through this English channel, TV9 is planning to focus on Southern states. It is known news that all English channels currently focus on northern states and central politics and they do little focus on news of southern news. Many, call these English channels as National media, probably it’s a misnomer as these channels are not giving “uniform” coverage to the news of all states. It can be recalled here that – in 2014, when KCR gave a power point presentation in Telangana assembly, KTR pointed out that nobody in national media wrote or talked anything about it and had it been done by someone from Delhi or other Hindi belt states, national media would have praised a heap on them. We will have to see, if TV9 English can address such things and become voice of south India at national level.

TV9 Tamil – TV9 seems to be of opinion that, there is no channel in Tamil that gives non-partisan news and so banking on huge success for Tamil. Tamil Nadu has the distinction of having the highest number of party owned TV channels. Foe e.g. Sun TV and Kalaignar TV owned by and supporters of DMK party. Jaya TV belongs to AIADMK . Ramadas’s PMK has Makkal TV. Tamil Maanila Congress launched Velicham TV in 2016 and its boss Thirumavalavan also affiliated with politics and was part of Vijaykanth led People’s welfare front in last elections. Captain TV is another channel in TN and it was started by Vijaykanth’s DMDK. Even though it is not news channel and it is a general channel like MAA TV or Gemini TV, they telecast Vijaykanth’s political tours live. Recently channels like Puthiya Thalamurai, Thanthi and Polimer are getting good ratings as these are not affiliated to political parties directly and TN audience are preferring neutral channels rather than parties that are affiliated to political parties. So, obviously TV9 too has good scope in Tamil Nadu if they can present news neutrally.

TV9 Hindi – Even though there are many channels in Hindi, it seems TV9 wants its presence felt in Hindi belt too.

TV9 currently has terrific ratings in Karnataka and Telugu. In fact top most Tamil channel’s ratings (Polimer) are much less compared to TV9 Telugu or TV9 Kannada. TV9 is market leader in in respective markets where it has presence. We will have to wait and see how TV9 will make it mark in these new areas.

Demystifying TRP: Is TV9 viewership dipping down?

There is ongoing war between Pawan Kalyan and a few media channels. As everyone knows it all started with Pawan Kalyan accusing a few channels colluding with ruling TDP party after Sri Reddy using cuss word against his mother. There has been curiousity among political and media circles to see whether Pawan Kalyan call to boycott these media channels has really any impact. Since Pawan Kalyan gave call on 20th April, it is almost 3 weeks now and we have already seen that as per last week ratings still TV9 rules the roost. Now latest data has been released and even though still TV9 is occupying the top slot, there has been considerable drop in the overall viewership of TV9. Before getting into the details of this let us first demystify what this TRP is all about.

An impression is when an ad is fetched from its source, and is countable. In other words, an impression is the display of an ad to a user. Usually these impressions are counted in 1000s. Advertisement cost is usually charged as cost per thousand impressions. For e.g. TV9 in week 18 (Apr 28 to May 04) has 32885 thousand impressions (i.e. 3.288 crore impressions) while it has 42690 thousand impressions in week 16 (Apr 14 t Apr 20). That means, there is 22% drop in the impressions of TV9 from Week 16 to week 18. That means if 100 people watched an ad in TV9 in week 16, in week 18 it reached only 78 people. But this doesn’t mean 22% drop in ad revenue because there will be several adjustments, modifications and negotiations between marketing teams of these channels and the agencies that bring ads .

TRPs are calculated using the denominator as the total target audience, and the numerator as the total impressions delivered to this audience x 100.

TRP = ( impressions / total target audience) *100
For e.g. If total target audience for these channels is taken as 7 crores,
TV9 TRP in Week 16 = (4,29,60,000) / 7,00,00,000 ) *100 = 60
TV9 TRP in Week 17 = (3,66,02,000) / 7,00,00,000 ) *100 = 51
TV9 TRP in Week 18 = (3,28,85,000/ 7,00,00,000) * 100 = 45

Are these TRPs published and available for common people?

No. Calculated TRPs are distributed to seeking agencies (like advertising agencies) and TV channels. What is available in public domain is just the number of impressions of only top 5 channels across the genres. But it is to be noted that these number of impressions are directly proportional to TRP ratings of the channels. Common people can calculate themselves to get approximate TRP ratings based on the impressions.

So what we can infer from above data? Obviously, TV9 viewership is in downward trend while remaining channels maintained approximately steady trend

It is clear that TV9’s viewership is down by 22.97% in last 3 weeks approximately. Also, other channels also seen dip in viewership in last 3 weeks but their dip in viewership is much less compared to TV9’s dip in viewership.

It is interesting to see the huge gap between entertainment channels and news channels. Top entertainment channel in Telugu is MAA with 4,49,474 thousand impressions where as top news channel TV9 has 32885 thousand impressions. That means top news channels impressions is not even 10 % of top entertainment channels impressions. This is the reason, ad cost in entertainment channel being much higher than that in news channel.

How much of this could be attributed to Pawan Kalyan effect

Obviously fans of Janasena want to believe that this dip in Tv9 is because of Pawan Kalyan as he made wildest allegations on this channel and asked his followers to boycott this channel. On the other hand, people who want to believe Pawan Kalyan’s call has no impact at all attribute this dip in viewership to the lack of any breaking news during this period. There is truth in both of these arguments and it is really difficult to conclude which argument is ‘more’ correct.

It is also to be noted that TV9 has Record TRP of 92 during the week of Sridevi death. compared to that 92, current rating of approximately 45 is much less. but you have to note that when there is a breaking news like Sridevi death mystery, Jayalalitha death mystery, beautician Sirisha mystery Tollywood drug case, there is the general upsurge in the viewership of news channels. Lack of such breaking news also might be reason for the drop in viewership, says some. But it is to be noted here that Channels other than TV9 have almost maintained a steady trend with no significant drop. So here comes the argument that this could be because of Pawan Kalyan effect. It is obvious that he has so many fans in Telugu States. If only certain percentage of his fans have completely blocked this TV9 channel, there must be drop in viewership at least to that extent.

Now if we combine both the facts that a section of people have completely stopped viewing TV9 and the lack of breaking news – we get the answer. Not one of these reasons but the combined effect of these 2 reasons might be the reason for the dip We will have to wait and see how long this trend will continue.

TV9 did not respond even after 24 hours: What’s the strategy

It’s more than 24 hours now, since Pawan Kalyan made very serious allegations on TV9 that they have colluded with ruling party to do a conspiracy against him.

He accused TV9 owner Srini Raju, TV9 CEO Ravi Prakash, director Ram Gopal Varma , Lokesh’s friend Rajesh Kilaru and Lokesh colluded and designed a media conspiracy against him and spent 10 crores for this. Everybody surprised by Pawan Kalyan direct comments against media and people were waiting to see how TV9 will respond on this and how it will handle this.

However TV9 choose to not respond on this issue. It’s almost 24 hours but they didn’t condemn any allegations made by Pawan Kalyan. Usually, when somebody makes allegations on any media, they will immediately condemn those allegations and explain their version so that the allegations are not registered in the minds of viewers.Sometimes they also threaten alleging parties to face legal consequences of this. However it is surprising to see TV9 chose not to respond on this at all. They completely ignored Pawan Kalyan tweets, his protest and all other activity of him yesterday. What could be the reason for this?

First, it could be because TV9 might be still preparing the strategy and go aggressively once they get all the details. People who know Srini Raju, think he is not the guy who will let go these kind of things. Also these are serious allegations that will damage the credibility of the channel. So, letting go these kind of allegations will definitely impact the image people have on this channel. So, sooner than later Srini Raju will start his legal battle, some say.

Second, some other people say TV9 is really cornered in this issue and they cannot do much about this. If Pawan Kalyan really has any proof and if he reveals that proof during the course of legal battle that will damage TV9 credibility even more. So, TV9 is really waiting to confirm if any proof he really has. If they get to know he does have some sort of proofs,TV9 will not drag the matter further. Also it is to be noted, Sakshi was saying yesterday- Pawan has some audio tape of Rajesh Kilaru, friend of Lokesh on this. So, as per these people, Tv9 is currently inquiring what proof he really has.

Third, some people who did buy-in actor Sivaji’s now famous theory of Operation Garuda think this might be part of the same operation. As per them Pawan Kalyan might be just a pawn in the hands of BJP who wants to get control of media which actually did much more damage to the BJP party in Andhra Pradesh. They are instigating Pawan on this and once the issue escalates, they will work on loop-holes of TV9 and Srini Raju.

However if we examine all these three possibilities the first two seem to be bit logical and operation Garuda logic seems to be far-fetched. But whatever be the reason TV9 keeping calm for so long he is really surprising for its viewers.

DSP Sunitha Reddy Coverage — Not an encroachment of privacy, but in Public Interest

Of late, there has been lot of discussion among Telugu people about the coverage given by TV9 on various issues. Some are making scathing comments on TV9 about their biasedness in coverage of issues, some are questioning the “Character assassination done by Telugu media (read it TV9)” on the persons involved in the issues and a few more accusing TV9 for violating privacy of the persons involved in various issues. However, digging into issue further reveals truths, justifying TV9’s coverage.

TV9 editor expressed their way of handling the woman issues without violating the privacy of the persons involved in the issue. TV9 Editor added, they have aired stories where daughters-in-law were being harassed for dowry or burnt for dowry or for “not giving birth to a male child” etc. In all such cases, they did enter into their premises but did not face any resistance from the accused or victims and so they had not transgressed anyone’s private spaces. TV9 editor mentioned the stories they aired where they exposed the tricks of several cheating babas and holy godmen and also explained their path is full of thorns as they face attacks in social media by riff-raff elements, physical threats , communal, casteist, politically motivated attacks everyday.

The specific issue where TV9 has exposed extra-marital affair of a top cop has driven extra scrutiny. However, the key point that needs to be raised is whether top cops can set bad precedents like these. Just to refresh memory, FIR filed by husband states – his wife and her lover, both are policemen, cheated him. While TV9 stood by the husband, some people questioned TV9 the way it handled the issue and the stand they taken. Husband and his mom approached TV9 as this issue has public interest because cheating wife is a dynamic lady police officer. However, lady officer’s version is TV9 is encroaching her private space. However, the lady officer ignores the fact that she is having an extra marital affair with another person in the same department. TV9 also justified ushering camera in their bedroom to expose the facts. The lady police officer was given a chance to explain her version but she chose not to do so, hiding somewhere in response to the verbal advice of her paramour and she did not even respond to many messages from TV9 channel to give her version. TV9 justified all the coverage by proving weak husband was visibly terrified by the cops as they threatened to shoot him dead in an “encounter”.

Finally, TV9 editor mentions about the aversion of some people for Telugu channels makes them so blind as to dare to attribute anything to the channels and make blatantly false allegations.

Ram Gopal “War”ma to file case on TV9

Maverick director Ram Gopal Varma made a sensational tweet saying he is planning to file case on TV9 for distorting facts about him and cases on him. He announced that he is consulting with his lawyers currently for proceeding on case against TV9.

He tweeted, “Just Chilling and enjoying on top of a 27th floor terrace in Mumbai, laughingly watching the nuesencically non sensical reports of Tv 9.

Tv 9 should be actually renamed as #Tv9CircusJokers.” He added, “For all those false news circulating that I have denied making #GodSexTruth,its only a production and technical process that I was detailing ..How can I deny when I am credited in the film?. “. He revealed his plans of filing cased on TV9, as he tweeted, ” Am in the process of filing multiple cases including criminal charges on Tv 9 channel ..My lawyers are presently gathering all the relevant materials. TV9 channel under Rajnikant is distorting facts and presenting false news ..spreading malicious and derogatory perceptions..it’s claims of news leaks from an ongoing investigation is a crime ..Tv 9 will be soon dealt with as per the laws of the land”.

He also published a poll result that says, 85% people say Ram Gopal Varma is honest, while only 15% say, TV9 Rajnikant is honest.

TV9 revenge on Hyper Aadi, yet again Aadi embarrassed TV9

Recently there was some debate in TV9 that had Hyper Aadi and his satires as the focus. Telugu360 reported how Hyper Aadi embarrassed TV9 in that program. Seems, TV9 was hurt, at least that is the impression that one gets when they watch very recent program in TV9 that again focused on Hyper Aadi. But it seems Hyper Aadi embarrassed TV9 yet again.

Actually, Hyper Adi recent skit had some controversial dialogue regarding orphans. When other character asks him “who are called orphans?”, he replies “Athi gaa aasha paDE mogaaDiki, athigaa AvEsapaDE aaDadaanikee puTTina santhanamE, anaadhalu” (Orphans are those who are born to highly greedy man ad highly charged woman). It’s actually a Rajnikant dialogue and Adi tried to use it in a funny situation. But the joke actually boomeranged as it hurt orphan children who lost their parents because of various reasons. This particular dialogue from Aadi seemed to be crossing the line a bit and even some viewers of the program.Some orphans and women organizations filed police case on Hyper Aadi and Jabardasth show. Various women organizations even had a round table conference on this issue. Later, TV9 convened a debate that lasted for more than 3 hours. Representatives from orphanages, an orphan girl, social activist and critic Kathi Mahesh were in the debate and almost all of them targeted Aadi demanding an apology from him on the same Jabardast program. Then, Hyper Aadi entered the live debate. Initially he tried to defend himself but later he apologized the orphan girls. Had Hyper Aadi stopped here, the matter would have been ended smoothly. But Hyper Aadi dared to rub the shoulders on the wrong side with TV9 and yet again embarrassed TV9. In previous debate, he embarrassed TV9 – when asked “On last Sunday, when there was boat mishap in the state, TV9 telecast debate with Kathi Mahesh for 1 hour just to criticize Hyper Aadi. Is it necessary to telecast that program during that time?”.

Hyper Aadi asked TV9 a candid question – “If what Jabardasth is doing is vulgar, what would you call “Weekend Masthi” program done in TV9 sometime back with the same Jabardasth artistes?”. He asked TV9 anchor, dont cut my call and don’t deviate from the topic and answer straightly to this question. In fact TV9 anchor could not answer the question and his face turned black. Other participants in the debate came to the help of TV9 anchor and they bombarded Aadi with several other questions and during which time anchor could recover. Story didn’t end there. Participants demanded Aadi to apologize only in the Jabardast program – not in facebook live or any other platform so that it would reach maximum audience. Aadi told he would apologize in the same debate in TV9, for which participants did not agree and insisted to apologize in Jabardasth program. Then, Aadi delivered one more punch that is also directed at TV9. He questioned the participants – whether they believe TV9 has lesser viewership than Jabardasth. This again embarrassed TV9 anchor.

But there are a few pointers which Hyper Aadi need to understand. First, he has to understand – fighting against media or social media is always a losing battle. With his wit and spontaneity, he may win few arguments but even then, it will be a zero sum game for him by the end. There are several instances in the history, when the celebrities who got success in their early twenties made some presumptuous comments which they repented later – For e.g Jr NTR, Simbu and Ram Charan later in their career repented the statements/ decisions they made in their early days of career. Hyper Aadi seems to be on high now with his instant success and becoming celebrity too quickly. He always had an opportunity to convey his opinions humbly which he didn’t bother to utilize. Aadi must have remembered this and showed some humility despite the fact that he had some valid arguments. Agreed, his argument that TV9’s weekend Masthi also had same concept as Jabardasth; Agreed TV9 might have selectively targeted him (TV9 did not have similar debate when Bala Krishna or other big celebrities made even harsher comments); Agreed that excessive screen duration that TV9 dedicated to this issue (more than 4 -5 hours on single day) is not really in proportion with the severity of the issue at macro level of the state issues. But STILL Aadi should have understood it is a zero sum game and avoided all this hullabaloo. If he doesn’t understand now, he will understand it later, but that process will be definitely harder and troublesome!!!!

Hyper Aadi embarrassed TV9 ??

Jabardasth comedian Hyper Aadi, was in TV9 studio couple of days back. He was actually there to have debate with Kathi Mahesh, who made some adverse comments on Pawan Kalyan. It is know news that, Hyper Aadi made some sarcastic comments on critic Kathi Mahesh in his skit, albeit without directly taking his name. This annoyed Kathi Mahesh and he made some comments on Hyper Aadi as well as Jabardasth program. So to condemn those comments, Hyper Aadi came to debate in TV9. But we are not focusing in this article on how the debate went between Hyper Aadi and Kathi Mahesh but to discuss the subtle incident that happened during the debate that actually embarrassed TV9.

Initially Hyper Aadi did so well in the debate and seemed like he did his home work well before coming to debate. But during the debate, he tried to put even TV9 in an embarrassing position. He straightly asked the question – “On last Sunday, there was boat mishap in the state and that incident shook entire state. Even when that incident happened, TV9 telecast debate with Kathi Mahesh for 1 hour just to criticize Hyper Aadi. Is it necessary to telecast that program during that time?”. When this question was asked TV9 anchor Devi initially confused and then obviously miffed and replied, “We know what to telecast when”. It seemed, after this question, TV9 deviated from their initial approach on this program (that is debate between Kathi Mahesh and Hyper Aadi regarding Pawan Kalyan) and took Social activist Devi into live call and debated on Jabardasth program and how bad it is for society.

The debate continued for more than 2 hours and was able to engage audience through out. But after couple of days, when TV9 uploaded the program in their youtube channel, the part of the discussion that had Aadi asking TV9 this embarrassing question and subsequent discussions were deleted. So obviously it proves TV9 was embarrassed by Aadi’s questions !!!

Jagan meets NTV CEO

Telugu360 exclusive revealed that Jagan convened a meeting with the CEOs/editors of electronic media at his Lotus Pond residence on Tuesday.

More and more details of these meetings are coming out from insiders now.

Jagan after Tuesday’s meeting, now started meeting Telugu media bosses personally. As per T360 sources, he went to NTV Narendra nath chowdary house yesterday evening. He requested support for his pada yatra. Before 2014, NTV Neilson org surveys in fact predicted Jagan to become CM and those survey results were widely telecast in NTV. NTV might have give good coverage for Jagan’s foot march as usual.

He also requested appointment with TV9 Ravi Prakash. As per sources in the know, he didn’t reply. Then Jagan tried reaching out to him through some common contacts. Interesting to see if he can audience with the CEO of the perennial ratings topper in electronic media. Interesting to note just an year back Jagan used to Pooh Pooh Ravi Prakash in his Sakshi channel. If one can recall, there was one “special program” in TV9 during (around) 2012 in which they thrown light on Lotus pond’s extravagance and they mentioned there is a bar inside this Jagan’s house and that has expensive imported liquor bottles. Then Konda Surekha and Shobha Nagi Reddy (then YSRCP leaders) challenged TV9 saying, “There is no bar inside Jagan’s house. He doesn’t drink at all. So TV9 has to either show bottles and prove their story is correct or say sorry to Jagan and shut down their TV channel”. They tried to ignore YSRCP leaders’ challenge but Sakshi reminded it every day in their channel and started even scathing stories on TV9. One of their “Special story on TV9” alleged that in South Africa, TV9 is illegally telecasting without proper permissions from the government there and Sakshi has all the evidences. TV9 had given explanation for that incident and told that they are not violating any government law anywhere. Then again, in a Public meeting Jagan told – “one more “R” joined anti-Jagan camp now, that is “Ravi Prakash”. Previously it was only Ramoji and Radha Krishna”.

Now all this is the past and Jagan is trying hard to get appointment of Ravi Prakash. We have to wait and see what more unfolds!!!

Social media campaign against TV 9

Probably, for the first time in Indian television industry’s history, viewers have launched a campaign against TV 9 for what they call “scandalous coverage” of news and events. According to a message making rounds on WhatsApp, a campaign has been launched to boycott TV 9 for its ‘scurrilous reporting and dividing people on the basis of religion and caste and creating an unhealthy atmosphere among the people through its various programmes.’

Sent in Telugu, the long message has listed a number of instances and cases in which people who got influenced by what they had seen on TV 9 entered into heated arguments and broke their relationship. And, in some cases, they came to blows; in families, some TV 9 programmes had led to feuds, the message has alleged.

Further, it said dozens of cases have been filed against the channel for defaming people, insulting organisations, telecasting canards about venerable and respected personalities and blackmail. “It’s not journalism; fake and false news peddled as true stories,” the message said. It wanted the recipients to join the mail chain to reach out to millions of Telugu’s in campaign against TV 9.

For many TV 9 fans, it is the only Telugu channel that exposes the ‘truth’ and calls a spade a spade, though not all will agree with that view. Sensationalism and hype are considered to be the channel’s forte. TV 9 uses both to maximum advantage to increase its TRP ratings, say many viewers. In the same breath, they stress that if some don’t want to watch the channel, let them switch over to other channels. Why a campaign when every TV channel in the country has a licence to operate and beam whatever it wants within the boundaries of law?

Why TV9 deal not going to happen anytime soon?

TRP topper TV9 which goes by the tagline ‘For A Better Society’ is witnessing several dialogues within financial investors who are looking for an exit from the Associated Broadcasting Company Pvt. Ltd. (ABCL). Instituted in 2004 by Ravi Prakash, 80 percent of the stakes rests with the financial investors while the founder and the team owns about 18 percent stake. Even though Ravi Prakash holds minority stake, he holds the veto power to pick suitable acquirer. Since the motives for the marquee journo turned CEO and VC’s are not aligned, sources opine that it will take a long time to find a suitable buyer who works for both the parties.

As per the reports in Hindu Business line, at least four media groups have completed due-diligence by roping in multi-national consultants to make a bid for the stake. They are yet to revert with a number. However, the negotiations failed to reach a breakthrough as the CEO Ravi and major stake holder Srini Raju are yet to reach an accord. “There are have ongoing discussions from the last few years. But there is no concrete deal so far to my deals”, avers Ravi Prakash , CEO of TV9 group, to Telugu360.

ABCPL had given mandate to its investment bankers to look for buyers at a valuation of Rs 500-600 crore about three years ago. If the words are to be believed nothing concrete has happened so far as their terms and demands were not accepted. While one condition is about the CEO having veto power on whom to sell, the other demand is valuing the company between Rs 800-1000 crore

The company soon after its inception, instituted more news channels in different languages like Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati and English.

TRP Toppers TV9 Telugu and TV9 Kannada bring steady income and profits with an accumulated revenue of Rs 136.91 crore in FY 2015-16 while the unaudited revenue of the six channels amounted to Rs 188.56 crores for the same fiscal. As per the financial projections for 2016-17, the six channels are likely to generate Rs 228.30 crore. While the toppers will hit 150 crores this fiscal, the laggards News9, TV1, Gujarati and Marathi channel will together fetch rupees 70 crore.

Srini’s stake in TV9 allegedly ranges between Rs 500 crore to Rs 600 crore. If the iLabs founder had his way, the deal would have clinched long ago. As per the contract, the stakes are to be sold to the party that Ravi agrees upon despite holding merely 18% stakes.

Earlier reports emerged that Srini is in talks to sell his TV9 stake to Network 18 and Quintilian Media founder, Raghav Bahl, but the rumours were slated. Since Srini and Ravi have conflicting motives, they are unable to arrive to consensus, consequently delaying the process. However, the discussions are aimlessly drifting, so there is some time for anything concrete to happen.

KTR gives a piece of mind to NTV and TV9

A video of a policeman brutally beating a person surfaced on social media. A twitter user requested Minister Municipal Administration & Urban Development Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao to look into the issue. An active user on twitter, the minister asked the Telangana DGP to probe into the issue and also assured stringent action against officials if the alleged video turns out to be factual. However, while the investigation was in progress, Telugu media houses including top channels like TV9 and NTV broadcasted the news belittling the Telangana police.

This of course did not go down well with KTR, as the video being broadcasted was from Rajasthan. He gave a piece of mind to the channels by saying that they are trying to cause irreparable damage to government institutions and requested the media outlets to do fact checking before broadcasting. He not only enlightened them but also asked them to issue a riposte in the next broadcast correcting their mistake. While the rejoinder from the TV channels is awaited, the IT minister advised people not to believe everything seen on social media.

This is just another incident in recent times, where the news channels have been publishing news based on the videos surfaced on social media without fact checking. Surprisingly TV9 which runs “Edi Viral Edi Real” where the fact check videos surfaced on social media got carried away this time.

KTR who is active not only on social media, ardently follows the national and local media. Recently he took a jibe at national media saying that “98% of India is outside of Delhi”. It is high time for the news outlets ensure to scrutinize their broadcast especially the news based on social media.

Union minister looking for ways to implicate TV9

The “Special category status to Andhra Pradesh” issue has generated much political heat in past few months in Andhra Pradesh,as well as in New Delhi.’Special category status to AP’ was one of the promises made in parliament along with Andhra Pradesh Re-orginazation bill in 2014. Then Congress prime minister Mr. Manmohan singh had given a verbal commitment of five years,while BJP had demanded for 10 years special status to Andhra Pradesh. However, post general elections, BJP had flip-flopped on the issue and is facing heat from all sections.

Realizing the political damage the issue is causing , Narendra Modi government has resorted to do damage control and deployed a team of union ministers to formulate an alternative action. An economic package to AP, in lieu of special status,is the union government’s latest resolution which has received mixed response from the people and political parties of Andhra Pradesh. An union minister, who was vociferous in support of special status when BJP was in opposition,is under line of fire from media and rival parties for his flip-flop now.

Initially the Telugu media outlets,except Modi’s trumpet EENADU group, were against the union government and supported the voice of the people in this issue. After declaration of ‘special economic package’ to Andhra pradesh, few media houses like Andhra Jyothy had softened their anti-BJP voice.These media groups are tasked to propagate ” Package is better than special status ” point to the people. It is open secret that BJP ally TDP’s bosses might have ordered their pro channels to soften their anti-BJP, anti-Union government voice in special status issue.

However, there is one channel TV9,which has been supporting “special category status to AP” movement since 2014 had not stopped making noise. TV9 channel in Telugu is conducting live debates, various other programs and primarily still stirring the ‘Special Status to AP’ cause.This is further causing uneasiness for ruling BJP-TDP alliance. In particular, above said union minister’s reputation is taking a beat via this channel’s programs.

It is reliably learnt that,now this union minister, using his clout in Information and Broadcasting ministry in Delhi, has requested officials to find loopholes (or) faults with TV9 network and,file cases against them. His secretary, whose name translates to ‘Truth’ in Telugu,is coordinating the task with I&B officials.

We need to wait and watch whether TV9 succumbs to these pressure tactics by this BJP minister (or) the minister takes back his pressure tactics.

OKa Manasu Review : A Slow Paced Love Story

Oka Manasu Movie Review

Konidela Niharika’s debut film Oka Manasu alongside Naga Shourya is gearing up for a grand release today. After a bunch of male actors from the illustrious Mega family made their entry into Tollywood, it is now time for a Mega heroine to entertain the audience with her acting capabilities on the silver screen.

Directed by Ramaraju, Oka Manasu, is a production venture by Madhura Sreedhar and TV9.All eyes are on the young starlet and the verdict will surely be a game changer for her career. Let’s see how well Niharika did in her debut.

Story:

Set in Vizianagaram, Oka Manasu is a love story between a two young professionals, a doctor (Niharika as Sandhya) and a politician (Naga Shourya as Surya). Rao Ramesh, who plays the role of Surya’s father, is a small time politician with an ambition to have his son succeed as an MLA. Surya is a loving, obedient son who commits to making father’s dream come true. He leads the life of a typical Telugu movie politician – negotiating settlements for money and instill fear in the people. Sandhya expresses her concerns regarding Surya’s risky life, but is in madly love with him. During a settlement, Surya kidnaps a relative of the Home Minister’s and a Dalit associate. This earns Surya jail time under the SC ST atrocity act. After he gets a temporary bail, Surya returns home and live together with Sandhya.
At this point, Surya is faced with the tough challenge to choose between Sandhya and his father. What led to this? What is Surya’s decision? How do Sandhya and his father react to this?  is the rest of the story.

Analysis :

A clean and matured love story, Oka Manasu runs on a  concept very different from your run of the mill love stories. However, the narration is extremely (read painfully) slow. In addition to the slow narration, Director Ramaraju can also be attributed with presenting each frame as a piece of art – soulless piece of art. The beauty of Vizag and Araku is well captured by the cameraman.

Given fact that 90% of the movie is conversation between the lead pair, the dialogues should have been more effective to make the scenes engaging. But, that’s not the case. Dry and ineffective dialogues lend to the negative aspect of the movie. The first half is pathetically slow, things get a little better halfway into the second half (this is where Surya makes his decision). The movie gets better from here on, ending with a heart touching climax.

The father – son thread between Surya and his father  is well executed. The love track is superficial for most of the movie, gains a bit of substance towards the end at which point it is too late to salvage the movie.

Shourya is perfect for the role as an obedient son and an adoring lover. Debutante Niharika has done a good job.

Actress Pragathi who played the role of Niharika’s mom in the movie need special mention. Her over action, extremely bad diction in a couple of scenes is just horrendous. Her future directors should make sure they keep her in check without going overboard.

Complete lack of entertainment quotient in the movie with just a single comedy scene for Vennela Kishore. Avasarala Srinivas played regular character – not a comedy one. Rao Ramesh excelled as usual.

Songs :

With soothing melodious music, Sunil Kashyap can be called the off screen hero. Coupled with Rama Jogayya Sastry’s good lyrics and arresting visuals, the songs are a good asset for the movie. However, we really wish that the director had used the songs with no interruption. Going the route of montage sequencing, he split the songs injecting scenes in between. ‘Ninna Lenantha’ , ‘O Manasa’ , ‘Chirugaali aagipove’ songs stand out.

Positives :
— Clean and a mature love story
— Well established father-son thread
— Sandhya’s unconditional love
— Poetic visuals
— Nice pre-climax and climax
— Soothing music

Negatives :

— Extremely slow narration
— Sluggish first half
— Ineffective dialogues
— Way too many conversational scenes between the lead pair – none making an impact

Verdict :

Made with good intentions Oka Manasu may earn some critical acclaim for the producers, TV9 and Madhura Sreedhar, as well as for the director Ramaraju. It’s possible it could start with not so favorable talk, but with good promotions it could attract the family audience to a certain extent. Slow non substantial first half and a slightly engaging second half, make the Box Office prospects for Oka Manasu bleak.

Tv9 enters movie production

Telugu states’ No.1 TV channel TV9 is entering movie production. Ravi Prakash, CEO of TV9 is entering into an agreement with Madhura Sreedhar Reddy who is a seasoned producer in Tollywood. TV9 and Sreedhar Reddy will be jointly producing the film which will be directed by Rama Raju. Rama Raju earlier directed critically acclaimed film “Mallela Theeram Lo Sirimalle Chettu”.

This film will take off very shortly and remaining details about the cast and crew of the film will announced shortly. This film will be made with a limited budget.
