Breaking: Bollywood heading for a Shut Down again

0

As predicted by the experts, the Omicron variant of coronavirus is creating a havoc in the country. The government of Maharashtra already imposed night curfews and theatres are asked to shutdown from tomorrow. The government of New Delhi issued a Yellow Alert and the movie theatres will operate on odd-even dates. Shahid Kapoor’s upcoming movie Jersey release is now postponed and several new Bollywood films are expected to get postponed.

SS Rajamouli and his team will take the final call on the release of RRR very soon. Maharashtra and New Delhi contribute to the major North Indian market and with the business restrictions in both the states, it would be tough for the biggies to release during the season. Ranveer Singh’s recent offering 83’s theatrical run too will be impacted for sure. Bollywood is heading for one more closure because of the current situations in the country.

Ranveer Singh to share the losses of 83?

0

83 is a film that is based on the life story of Indian legendary cricketer Kapil Dev. The film is made on a huge budget and the trailer kept huge expectations on the film. Shocking the film fraternity and the critics along with the trade analysts, 83 under-performed and failed to make an impact. The reviews and the word of mouth are extremely positive for 83 and the weekend performance makes it clear that the film will end up as a huge loss for all the parties. Deepika Padukone, Kabir, Vishnu Vardhan Induri, Sajid Nadiadwala, Reliance Entertainment produced the film.

Ranveer Singh is yet to take his full remuneration for the movie. Considering the performance, Ranveer Singh will have to bear the losses from the pending paycheque. Kabir Singh is badly criticized as a lot of money is spent on the movie. A major portion of the film is shot in London and all the actors are trained for months before the shoot commenced. Some of them say that the film looks like a documentary. With the governments of several states imposing restrictions, it would be tough for 83 to have a decent run at the box-office.

Ranveer: Bowling like Kapil Dev was most difficult aspect of ’83’ character development

0

Actor Ranveer Singh, who will be seen playing legendary Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev in the upcoming sports drama ’83’, has talked about getting into the skin of the character.

Ranveer revealed that bowling like the star cricketer was the most difficult aspect of his character development.

Ranveer said: “Bowling like Kapil Dev was the most difficult aspect of the character development. He has a very unique bowling action and his bio-mechanics are very unique to him. My body is very different from his so I had to transform my physicality drastically in order to achieve it.

He added: “It took a long time, in fact months to perfect the action. Initially, my body was too heavy because I was coming off the shoot of ‘Simmba’.”

The actor shared that Balwinder Singh Sandhu, the legend of the 1983 World Cup win who was also his coach noticed that his body was too heavy and he said “‘Jab tu run-up mein aata hai toh tu aisa lagta hai ki pehelwan bowling karne aa raha hai’.”

Ranveer added: “And he sent me away for a month just to change my physicality to bring it closer to Kapil’s athleticism and then once I did that, I started making some headway. I was playing cricket for 4 hours a day for 6 months and doing physical conditioning for 2 hours a day for those 6 months. Four months of prep and 2-3 months of shoot, I put in a lot of hours.”

Ranveer’s metamorphosis to become Kapil Dev pushed his body to its limit.

“There were a few injuries along the way but it was very important for me to crack his action because it is an iconic bowling action and all his admirers will be looking out for whether I did it right or not.”

Ranveer shared: “More importantly for him to feel that I got it right and for me to feel that I got it right and for it just spot on in the film and I had to put in the work but it was very fulfilling. At the end of the process, I have become a decent enough bowler also.”

He added: “Apart from Balwinder Singh Sandhu I had a lot of help from our coach Rajiv Mehra and there were several sessions that I did on the pitch with Kapil himself who had his inputs also to offer.”

’83’ highlights India winning the 1983 World Cup under the leadership of Kapil Dev, played by Ranveer.

The film is all set to release theatrically worldwide on December 23.

’83’ trailer lights up Burj Khalifa: Ranveer overwhelmed, Kapil gets emotional

0

Bollywood sensations Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone along with cricket legends Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Mohinder Amarnath, who were present in Dubai for the final leg of promotions for the upcoming sports epic ’83’, were overjoyed to see glimpses of the film projected onto the iconic Burj Khalifa.

The video is going viral on social media and cricket fans are eagerly waiting for the movie to be released.

The film’s director Kabir Khan and his wife Mini Mathur were also present at the venue. ’83’ is a sports drama based on India’s memorable cricket World Cup victory in 1983 and stars Ranveer as Kapil Dev, also known as the ‘Haryana Hurricane’. Deepika has been cast in the role of Romi Dev, Kapil’s wife.

The movie had its screening at the recently-concluded Red Sea International Film Festival, post which the film’s team reached Dubai where they saw the trailer lighting up the world’s tallest building.

Ranveer shared the video on his Instagram as he wrote in the caption, “The champions on the tallest building of the world! @burjkhalifa 83 RELEASING IN CINEMAS ON 24TH DEC, 2021, in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Also in 3D. #ThisIs83 (sic).”

While Ranveer rocked glitz with his blingy dress, Deepika went retro with her sartorial choice. The moment of pride left the team emotional and filled their hearts with love. Deepika was even seen shedding a tear as she was overwhelmed watching the trailer unfold on the iconic building.

Gavaskar, Kapil and Amarnath have shared the dressing room for a long time. Away from commentary duties since the end of the India-New Zealand Test series, Gavaskar is on a rest from the game and is enjoying his time with his former teammates.

All the greats of India’s famous World Cup win are currently busy promoting the much-awaited movie through different platforms.

Kapil was a great all-rounder, who was born with some rare natural gifts – athleticism, supreme fitness and a deadly outswinger to the right-handers. The legend is currently associated with a TV news channel as an expert.

Former national selector Amarnath, who played 69 Tests and 85 ODIs, has been away from the cricket scene since long. But the movie has brought all the cricket greats together.

Earlier, speaking to IANS, Kriti Azad had informed that all the scenes of the movie which came out so far are “real with no added flavour”.

’83’ also stars Tahir Raj Bhasin, Jiiva, Saqib Saleem, Jatin Sarna, Chirag Patil, Dinker Sharma, Nishant Dahiya, Harrdy Sandhu, Sahil Khattar, Ammy Virk, Addinath Kothare, Dhairya Karwa, R. Badree and Pankaj Tripathi.

The film is all set to release on December 24.

Most awaited Bollywood flicks gearing up for digital release?

1

A flock of Bollywood films including biggies are announced for digital release after the theatres are shut due to coronavirus pandemic. The list of digital releases goes on and the digital platforms scheduled films with decent gaps to entertain the audience with new content. As per the latest reports, Akshay Kumar starrer Sooryavanshi and Ranveer Singh’s 83 too may release through digital platforms very soon. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Reliance Entertainment CEO, Shibasish Sarkar confirmed the news.

“We are particular to release these projects for Diwali and Christmas respectively. If there is any delay further, we would head for a digital release” said Shibasish Sarkar. Considering the current situation, there is no chance of theatres to be reopened this year as the spread of coronavirus in the country is huge. The Centre too is not in a mood to grant permissions for theatres anytime soon. The filmmakers are unclear if the audience rushes to theatres if the theatres are reopened. Most of them are waiting for the vaccination for coronavirus to arrive so that they can get back to business.

Rohit Shetty directed Sooryavanshi and Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif are the lead actors. Kabir Khan directed 83 and Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone are the lead actors. Both these are the most awaited films of Bollywood for this year.

In 2020, the B’wood cricket movie moves to its next level

0

Cricket seems to be returning in the mindspace of Bollywood filmmakers, with a few high-profile projects lined up for release next year.

In 2020, Ranveer Singh plays Kapil Dev in “’83”, Kabir Khan’s film about India’s historic victory at the cricket World Cup of 1983. Shahid Kapoor, after “Kabir Singh”, seems to have struck gold with remakes of Telugu hits. His next, “Jersey” is a Bollywood remake of Gowtham Tinnanuri’s Telugu film of the same name, and it narrates the story of a failed cricketer who decides to revive his career against all odds despite being in his late thirties. Then there is the Mithali Raj biopic, which stars Taapsee Pannu as the protagonist. A film titled “God Of Cricket” has also been announced on cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar’s birthday this year.

Sure, Bollywood has always been fascinated by cricket, which remains a religion in India. In the past, we have had “Lagaan”, “Iqbal”, “Patiala House”, “Dil Bole Hadippa”, “Jannat”, “Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii”, “M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story”, “Azhar” and “The Zoya Factor” among others. In the nineties, too, there was the odd attempt to cash in on the sport with Aamir Khan starring as a cricketing star in Dev Anand’s “Awwal Number”.

Still earlier, in the eighties, real-life cricketer Sandeep Patil (incidentally, among the heroes of the 1983 team that won World Cup) starred as a reel-life cricketer in a film called “Kabhi Ajnabi The” (1985) . Also, Kumar Gaurav — a teenybopper star of the era– played a cricketer in “All Rounder” (1984).

There is a difference between the upcoming stock of cricket movies and the older ones. In most cases, Bollywood films of the past that had cricket as a backdrop were only using the sport to unfold a formulaic story of romance, drama, melodrama, comedy and, at times, some action. Barring the odd “Iqbal” or biopics of Dhoni and Azhar, these films were not so much about cricket or cricketers.

The upcoming films on cricket and cricketers will also look for formula in the stories of cricket and cricketers, but in keeping with contemporary Bollywood trends, aim at doing so with a context that makes the game relevant to the plot.

That’s something that excites the audience these days. A quick scan of the welcome that the Mithali Raj biopic is seeing on social media ever since it was announced a while back tells you as much.

“Can’t wait already”, “your biopic will be a must watch”, “another cricket biopic, already excited for it” — are some of the comments left on Twitter earlier this month after Viacom18 Studio announced that actress Taapsee Pannu will be bringing the story of Mithali alive on the silver screen with a biopic titled “Shabaash Mithu”.

“It’s not just a biopic of a personality but a larger story on how Indian women cricket team rose to great heights and their battles against the odds. It’s also about the biases in our society, about the rising Indian women and their struggle,” Ajit Andhare, COO, Viacom18 Studios, told IANS.

Andhare was watching the multiple-Oscar nominated film of 2016, “Hidden Figures”, when the idea of his film dawned in his mind. ” ‘Hidden Figures’ tells the true story of African American women who helped the US win the space race. On reflection, it struck me that just like the African women’s exploits are not widely known, so are our women cricketers! And that when cricket is a religion in India. So I developed a story idea around this core and went about securing the life rights of Mithali Raj who both as captain and a feisty woman epitomises this irony,” he said.

“We then went about developing the screenplay and finally got it right after changing many a writers. After several iterations between me and our in-house team member we developed the final screenplay. Taapsee Pannu was the first choice for the role and it’s great that we got her nod immediately after the narration to her. Rahul Dholakia loved the script, shares this dream and is on board as director,” added Andhare.

Filmmaker Kabir Khan’s “’83”, on the other hand, will take the audience back to the time when Kapil Dev led the underdog Indian cricket team to a famous victory against the mighty West Indies in the final of the 1983 World Cup. “’83”, which features Ranveer Singh, Tahir Raj Bhasin and Ammy Virk, among others, is co-produced by Reliance Entertainment, Phantom Films and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment.

“’83’ is not just a film about cricket, it is about the human spirit and hope. Whether you are a cricket fan or not, the story will resonate with you. It is about men who won against all odds — a David versus Goliath story that will give everyone goosebumps,” Shibasish Sarkar, Group CEO, Reliance Entertainment, told IANS.

“India won Independence in 1947 but the ’83 World Cup win is our independence in sports. For us, ’83 is a story that needs to be told – a true story that placed India on the global cricketing map. The ’83 World Cup was a game-changer as it rewrote India’s cricketing history. We just want to bring this incredible story to the audience,” he added.

If sources are to be believed, filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has been approached with two films based on cricket. The first, a Fox Star film, aims at being a larger-than-life Lala Amarnath biopic that has been written by Piyush Gupta and Neeraj Singh. The second is a cricket story being written by Abhijat Joshi.

“Cricket is not just a game. In India, it’s a religion that unites people. The biting of the nails, the racing of the hearts – all of these are familiar to Indians who are the most passionate fans in the world of Cricket. We aim at telling stories that resonate with the masses,” said Sarkar.

Trade expert Vinod Mirani feels that Hindi filmmakers are making movies around cricket or sports in general as India is on a winning spree. “You can’t be telling stories of losers and expect them to run (at the box office),” he told IANS.

Actors are also enjoying telling stories of sports personalities. Angad Bedi, who played cricketer in this year’s film “The Zoya Factor” and the web series “Inside Edge 2”, shared: “I like to play a sportsperson. Their lives are extremely close to the lives that we (actors) lead. They are full of ups and downs. One day you are a hero, the next day, media and people put you down if you are not giving your best.”

So far he has played fictional characters, he wouldn’t mind featuring in a biopic. “I would love to do a biopic on a bowler like Zaheer Khan or Harbhajan Singh. I would love to see their struggles on screen,” said Angad.
