Jagan plans counter campaign to Amaravati farmers

1

It looks as if chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy had planned a counter agitation programme in the state to the Amaravati farmers padayatra. The farmers of Amaravati are currently on their second round of walk from Amaravati to Arasavailli asking the government to develop Amaravati as the only capital of the state.

Earlier, these farmers have conducted the padayatra from Amaravati to Tirupati on the same demand. This is their second leg of agitation in support of their demand for Amaravati as the single capital of the state.

As the Amaravati farmers are marching towards Arasavalli in Srikakulam district, the chief minister and the ruling YSR Congress are planning a counter campaign in the Godavari districts and Uttarandhra region.

Minister for Education Botsa Satyanarayana, had on several occasions said that they would not remain silent to the misleading campaign by the Amaravati farmers on the capital issue. He called the Amaravati farmers padayatra a politically-motivated campaign to benefit the opposition TDP.

Assembly Speaker Thammineni Sitaram, Minister for Industries Gudivada Amarnath and another Minister Dr Seediri Appala Raju have held meetings in some parts of Uttarandhra region to sensitise people on decentralisation plans of the government and the political plans of the Amaravati farmers.

Now, they are holding round table conferences to create awareness among the people on decentralisation and the aspirations of the people of Uttarandhra and Rayalaseema regions. The first round table conference was held in Kakinada last week and the second conference was held in Rajamahendravaram on Monday.

Ministers, MLAs, MLCs and MPs from the ruling party are taking active part in these conferences highlighting the three capitals plans and creating the mood of the people against the Amaravati farmers walk in their region.

It is to be seen how successful this plan would be in countering the Amaravati farmers and helping the ruling YSR Congress.

Amaravati farmers’ padayatra diverted in Tenali

0

The police have diverted the padayatra of the Amaravati farmers in Tenali town on Wednesday to avoid clash with the ruling YSR Congress activists. The farmers have planned to walk through the Itanagar in Tenali, as the residents of the area have donated Rs 5 lakh for the padayatra.

However, the police foiled the plan as the ruling YSR Congress activists gathered at local MLA, Annabathuni Siva Kumar’s residence. The police told the farmers to take another route and avoid passing through the local MLA’s house.

The farmers insisted upon going through the road and tried to break the barricades and pushed the police. However, the police stopped the farmers and requested them to change their route in the town to avoid clashes and not to create law and order problems.

After some time, the farmers accepted the request of the police and took another road, giving a sigh of relief to the police. The police said that the high court had already advised the farmers to avoid clashes with the other groups and not to create law and order problems for the police.

The farmers alleged that the police and the ruling YSR Congress leaders were trying to create problems for the padayatra. The farmers also alleged that the ruling party leaders were trying to use the police to stop their padayatra by showing some law and order problems.

The farmers also accused the ruling party leaders of waiting for an opportunity to clash with the farmers. It is to be seen how the police would handle the issues when the farmers padayatra comes across the counter rallies of the ruling YSR Congress.

AP CID arrests five in Amaravati lands scam

1

As the farmers of Amaravati are on a long march from Amaravati to Arasavalli, the CID police on Tuesday arrested five persons in the assigned lands case. Former minister and TDP leader, Ponguri Narayana is the prime accused in the case.

The CID arrested Kolli Sivaram of Poranki in Vijayawada, Gattem Venkatesh of Prashanti Nagar in Vijayawada, Chikkala Vijaya Saradhi of MVP Colony in Visakhapatnam, Bade Anjaneyulu of P&T Colony in Visakhapatnam and Kotti Krishna Dora Babu of I B Colony in Visakhapatnam.

The case was filed on the complaint of Yalamati Prasad Kumar of Duggirala in Guntur district alleging that these persons were involved in the purchase of 169.27 acres of assigned lands in Amaravati.

The complainant said that Narayana, who was then Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, had misused his power and created panic among the SCs over the land pooling. The then minister and his persons have conspired with Ramakrishna Housing Private Limited and purchased these lands from the SCs in Amaravati, the complainant said.

The CID further found that the money was paid to the SCs from the bank accounts of the Ramakrishna Housing Private Limited. The CID also alleged that Kommareddy Brahmananda Reddy, Gummadi Suresh, Saifulla Rahaman, Potluri Jayanth, Ala Venkata Subbaiah, Pidaparti Titus Babu, and Seelam Sreenivasa Rao did the mediation for the transaction of the assigned lands from the SCs in violation of the laws.

The CID said that financial transactions of Rs 15 crore are seen from the entities connected to Narayana, his family members to the Ramakrishna Housing Private Limited. The CID further said that the flow of funds is also connected to the purchase of the assigned lands from the SCs in Amaravati at low prices.

Amaravati farmers padayatra ends at Mangalagiri on first day

0

The long march of the Amaravati farmers marking 1000 days of their protest against three capitals, started at Venkatapalem in the morning on Monday and concluded at Mangalagiri on the first day.

The padayatra would reach Arasavalli sun temple in Srikakulam district. This is the second long march of the farmers in the last 1000 days. Last year, the farmers conducted the long march from Amaravati to Tirupati, where they held a public meeting, which was addressed by the leaders of all political parties, except the ruling YSR Congress and the CPM.

This time, when the farmers started the maha padayatra at Venkatapalem, the leaders of various opposition parties joined them and extended support to the farmers. There are about 200 farmers participating in the maha padayatra.

While the AP police have denied permission for the padayatra sensing law and order problem, the high court had given the clearance. The high court also directed the farmers to give their names and the identification cards to the police for want of security.

The court also directed the police to consider the farmers’ request for a public meeting at the end of the long march. The leaders of all political parties are likely to attend the public meeting, as they did in Tirupati public meeting last year.

Meanwhile, the ruling YSR Congress had condemned the padayatra alleging it as a drama of TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu. Half-a-dozen ministers from the state have expressed fears over the law and order problem to the yatra as it would hurt the sentiments of the people who are supporting the administrative capital at Visakhapatnam.

It is to be seen how the police would handle the issue if the law and order problem arises as feared by the ministers and DGP K V Rajendranath Reddy.

Amaravati farmers gear up for Padyatra 2.0 from Sep 12

1

With the Andhra Pradesh High Court giving its green signal, preparations were in full swing for the second Maha Padyatra by farmers to demand development of Amaravati as the state capital.

Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi (APS) and Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Amaravati farmers were gearing up to launch Maha Padyatra from September 12.

The long march will begin from Venkatapalem in Thullur mandal at 5 a.m. The mahurat has been fixed by priests. The participants will begin the walkathon after performing puja at Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple in Venkatapalem.

The Padyatra with the slogan ‘Build Amaravati Save Andhra Pradesh’ is proposed to conclude at Arasavalli in Srikakulam district on November 11 after passing through 16 districts. It is aimed at mounting pressure on the government to complete the constructions and infrastructure creation in Amaravati as ordered by the High Court on March 3 this year.

Special Srivari Rath prepared for the Padyatra will be formally flagged off at 9 a.m. The organisers have invited leaders of all political parties except the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).

Leaders of Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress will be present at the launch programme.

On the first day, the Padyatra will conclude at Mangalagiri after passing through Krishnayapalem, Penumaka and Yerrabalem.

Meanwhile, the APS and JAC have submitted a list of 600 participants to the police. The organisers handed over the list to the office of the Director General of Police.

The High Court on Friday gave green signal hours after the police refused the permission for the long march aimed at demanding implementation of High Court orders for development of the state capital.

However, the court has given the nod to the organisers subject to the condition that not more than 600 people should participate in the march.

APS had approached the High Court, seeking direction to the police to give permission for Maha Padyatra.

Director General of Police Rajendranath Reddy issued an order late on Thursday night denying permission for the march on the ground that there was apprehension of breach of peace.

Last year, the farmers undertook a 45-day long Padyatra from Amaravati to Tirupati. Police had imposed various restrictions during the march titled Nyayasthanam (High Court) to Devasthanam (Tirumala temple).

In a significant judgment, the Andhra Pradesh High Court had on March 3 allowed 75 petitions filed by Amaravati farmers and others challenging the government’s move for trifurcation of the state capital.

After coming to power in 2019, the YSRCP had reversed the decision of the previous TDP government to develop Amaravati as the only state capital. It decided to develop three state capitals – Amaravati, Visakhapatnam and Kurnool.

AP high court gives conditional permission to Amaravati farmers

1

The Andhra Pradesh high court had given conditional permission to the Amaravati farmers’ proposed padayatra from September 12. The high court issued the permission though the AP police have denied.

The high court had asked the joint action committee of the farmers to give the identification cards and the phone numbers of the representatives to be participating in the padayatra. The court also directed the farmers to strictly follow the directions issued by the police from time to time.

The high court also asked the farmers to apply for permission for the public meeting at the end of the padayatra. The court had directed the farmers, represented by Gadde Tirupathi Rao, to give details of the speakers at the public meeting, to the police for security and other purposes.

Earlier, DGP K V Rajendranath Reddy wrote a letter to the joint action committee denying permission for the padayatra to be held from Amaravati to Arasavalli in Srikakulam district. The padayatra is planned to mark the 1000 days of the agitation by the farmers against the three capitals proposed by the Jagan Mohan Reddy government.

The DGP said that the padayatra might lead to law and order problems in the state, particularly along the route as there are people who support the three capitals plan of the government. The DGP expressed fear that the padayatra might cause law and order problems when it reaches Visakhapatnam, which was proposed as the administrative capital of the state.

Meanwhile, all opposition parties in the state have extended support to the proposed padayatra of the Amaravati farmers. The BJP, TDP and the Jana Sena are likely to join the padayatra, while the Congress and the Left parties are likely to extend support to the farmers.

Jana Sena backs Amaravati farmers’ padayatra

1

The Jana Sena had extended its support to the proposed padayatra by the farmers of Amaravati from Venkatapalem to the Sun temple in Arasavalli in Srikakulam district. The padyatra, second in its nature, would start on September 12, marking the completion of 1000 days of agitation.

Earlier, the farmers have conducted a similar padayatra from Amavarati to Tirupati, for which all political parties in the state extended their support.

The farmers met Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan at his Mangalagiri office on Monday and requested him to support their proposed padayatra. The farmers also requested the Jana Sena chief to support their demand for Amaravati as the only capital of Andhra Pradesh and not one of the three capitals.

Responding to the farmers’ request, Pawan Kalyan said that the Jana Sena would always stand by the farmers. He said that the Jana Sena is for the single capital at Amaravati and would not allow any government to change it. He also extended unconditional support to the farmers’ agitation.

Pawan Kalyan alleged that chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy had betrayed the farmers. He said that Jagan Mohan Reddy had supported Amaravati as capital when he was in the Opposition. Jagan Mohan Reddy went to the elections in 2019 showing his house in Tadepalli, Pawan Kalyan said.

However, after coming to power, Jagan Mohan Reddy had betrayed the farmers by proposing Amaravati as one of the three capitals and thus diluting the spirit with which the farmers have given their lands to the government.

The Jana Sena chief alleged that Jagan Mohan Reddy had betrayed every section of the people in the state in the last three years. He said Jagan had made several false and fake promises to the people during the 2019 elections. Once in power, the YSR Congress chief had stabbed every section of the people in their back.

Pawan Kalyan made an appeal to the people to vote against Jagan Mohan Reddy in the 2024 general elections. He wanted a YSRC-free Andhra Pradesh after the elections. He said he would continue the fight to defeat the YSR Congress and wanted the people to support him.

Barring YSRCP, all Andhra parties show solidarity with Amaravati farmers

0

Leaders of all parties, barring Andhra Pradesh’s ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), came on a common platform to declare their support to Amaravati farmers whose agitation against the move for trifurcation of state capital completed two years on Friday.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, CPI leader K. Narayana, YSRCP’s rebel MP Raghurama Krishnam Raju and leaders of Congress, Jana Sena, BJP and other parties shared the platform at a public meeting organised by Amaravati farmers in the temple town.

Large number of people participated in the meeting to show solidarity with the farmers while the leaders of all the opposition parties assured to stand by them.

The public meeting, which marked the culmination of Amaravati to Tirupati ‘Mahapadyatra’ by Amaravati farmers and women, also coincided with the completion of two years since the announcement by Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy to develop three state capitals.

Demanding that Amaravati be developed as the only state capital as decided by the previous TDP government, farmers and women undertook the foot march, which concluded at Tirupati on December 14.

As the district administration of Chittoor denied permission to farmers to hold the public meeting, the farmers moved the High Court, which gave conditional permission for the meeting.

Setting aside their differences, leaders of various parties and groups came on the common platform to assure Amaravati farmers that they will continue to back their agitation. They said the state’s future will be bright only if Amaravati is developed as the only state capital. They made it clear that nobody can shift the state capital from Amaravati and that the sacrifices of farmers will not go in vain.

Some farmers broke down while addressing the public meeting. They said they gave their lands for development of the state capital but the YSRCP government threw them on the streets by deciding to develop three state capitals.

Chandrababu Naidu, who had prepared the vision of Amaravati as a world-class city, slammed Jagan Mohan Reddy for what he called destroying the future of the state and its people.

He wondered how the state capital can be shifted when the foundation was laid by the Prime Minister and the Centre also gave Rs 2,500 crore for capital works and also extended certain exemptions to farmers, who had given 33,000 acres of land.

Alleging that the YSRCP government gave a caste colour to the state capital, he said Jagan Mohan Reddy has no vision. He urged the Chief Minister to stop the false propaganda against Amaravati.

Naidu claimed that Amaravati lands can help the state mobilise financial resources. “Don’t spend even a rupee in Amaravati but don’t destroy this economic asset for the future of the state and its people,” he told Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Stating that Amaravati is the most suitable location for the state capital, the TDP chief said while all regions should develop, the state capital should remain in Amaravati. He exuded confidence that ultimately Amaravati will emerge victorious in this battle for justice.

Jana Sena leader Ramdas Chowdary told the public meeting that party founder and actor Pawan Kalyan has sent a message to the meeting that Amaravati will remain as the state capital.

Actor Shivaji slammed the YSRCP government for its blunders. He pointed out that except leaders of YSRCP, all have come on the common platform.

Congress leaders Tulsi Reddy and Mastan Vali, BJP leader Kanna Lakshminarayana and others addressed the meeting and expressed their full support to the movement by Amaravati farmers.

CPI-M leader P. Madhu stayed away from public meeting saying he can’t share the dais with BJP leaders. He, however, said his party would continue its support to the just cause of Amaravati farmers.

Rally in support of three capitals in Tirupati ahead of Amaravati farmers’ meet

0

A day before the public meeting by Amaravati farmers, a huge rally was organsised here on Thursday to support the proposal of three state capitals.

Hundreds of people participated in the huge rally oganised by Rayalaseema Intellectual Forum to mobilise support for its proposed public meeting.

The Forum is backing the state government’s decision to create three capitals – Amaravati, Kurnool and Visakhapatnam.

Large number of students from various colleges participated in the rally which passed through various parts of the temple town.

Raising slogans of “we want justice”, the participants were carrying a banner declaring support for decentralisation of development.

However, some youth participating in the rally were not clear about its purpose. They said Amaravati should be retained as the only state capital.

The rally came a day before the public meeting by farmers of Amaravati, opposing three capitals and to demand that Amaravati be continued as the only state capital. The public meeting coincides with completion of two years after the announcement by Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy to develop three state capitals.

As announced by the chief minister, Kurnool in Rayalaseema region will be developed as the judicial capital and Visakhapatnam in north coastal Andhra will be developed as administrative capital while Amaravati will be retained only as the legislative capital.

For two years, farmers of 29 villages of Amaravati region, who had given 33,000 acres of land for development of the state capital, have been staging protests against the trifurcation.

Demanding that Amaravati be retained as the only capital, the farmers and women of Amaravati undertook a “Mahapadyatra” from Amaravati to Tirupati. The temple town is part Chittoor district in Rayalaseema region.

Titled “court to temple” the “Mahapadyatra” began near Andhra Pradesh High Court at Amaravati on November 1. It passed through various towns and villages in Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore and Chittoor districts and concluded at Tirupati on December 14.

After covering 450 km in 44 days, the “Mahapadyatra” ended at Alipiri, the foothills of Sri Venkateswara temple.

Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi and Amaravati Joint Action Committee wanted to organise the public meeting at the end of “Mahapadyatra” but Chittoor district police denied the permission on the ground that this could create law and order problems due to regional sentiments.

However, the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Wednesday allowed them to organise the public meeting on December 17.

The court gave the permission for the meeting subject to certain conditions. The organisers were directed to hold the meeting from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and follow Covid-19 protocol.

Rayalaseema Hakkula Sadhana Samithi, a group fighting for the rights of Rayalaseema region, wanted to organise a public meeting the same day but the court made it clear that two meeting can not be allowed the same day and suggested it to hold the meeting on some other day.

Andhra HC allows Amaravati farmers to hold public meeting in Tirupati

0

The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Wednesday allowed farmers of Amaravati region to organise a public meeting in Tirupati on December 17.

The court gave the permission for the meeting subject to certain conditions. The organisers were directed to hold the meeting from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and follow Covid-19 protocol.

The court order came a day after the mega foot march by farmers and women of Amaravati to demand that Amaravati be retained as the only state capital concluded in Tirupati.

After covering 450 km in 44 days, the ‘Mahapadyatra’ from Amaravati to Tirupati ended at Alipiri, the foothills of Sri Venkateswara temple.

The Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi and Amaravati Joint Action Committee wanted to organise the public meeting at the end of the ‘Mahapadyatra’ but Chittoor district police denied the permission.

Following this, they approached the High Court. The counsel on behalf of petitioners argued that the foot march concluded smoothly without any law and order problems

The government submitted to the court that if the public meeting was allowed, it could lead to clashes on regional lines. It brought to court’s notice certain video clips of farmers allegedly attacking police during the ‘Mahapadyatra’.

The court rejected the arguments of the government and allowed the farmers to conduct the meeting. The organisers were directed to avoid making comments which could lead to law and order problems.

Rayalaseema Hakkula Sadhana Samithi, a group fighting for the rights of Rayalaseema region, wanted to organise a public meeting the same day but the court made it clear that two meeting can’t be allowed the same day and suggested it to hold the meeting on some other day.

Chittoor is part of Rayalaseema region. As per the decision of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government in 2019, the state will have three state capitals.

It proposes to develop Kurnool in Rayalaseema as the judicial capital and Visakhapatnam in north coastal Andhra as administrative capital while Amaravati will be retained only as the legislative capital.

Farmers of 29 villages of Amaravati region, who had given 33,000 acres of land for development of the state capital when Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was in power, have been protesting against the government move for more than 700 days. They want Amaravati to be developed as the only state capital.

Amaravati farmers’ ‘Mahapadyatra’ concludes in Tirupati

1

The mega foot march by farmers and women of Amaravati demanding that the city be retained as the only state capital of Andhra Pradesh concluded in temple town Tirupati on Tuesday.

After covering 450 km in 44 days, the ‘Mahapadyatra’ ended at Alipiri, the foothills of Sri Venkateswara temple.

Leaders of the Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi and the Amaravati Joint Action Committee, along with other participants broke 108 coconuts, praying for success of their agitation against trifurcation of the state capital.

The participants later left for the hill shrine to offer prayers.

Titled ‘court to temple’, the ‘Mahapadyatra’ began near Andhra Pradesh High Court at Amaravati on November 1. It passed through various towns and villages in Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore, and Chittoor districts to reach Tirupati.

Farmers of 29 villages of Amaravati region, who had given 33,000 acres of land for development of the state capital when the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was in power, have been protesting for more than 700 days. With the foot march, their agitation entered a new phase.

Leaders of the JAC said they successfully completed the walkathon despite the hurdles created by the police at various places at the instance of ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). They said the ‘Mahapadyatra’ was only the beginning of their movement, and they were determined to carry on the movement till the YSRCP government decides to have Amaravati as the only capital.

During the foot march, the movement witnessed some key developments. On November 22, when the High Court resumed hearing on a batch of petitions challenging the government’s plans for trifurcation of state capital, the government took back the laws passed to create their state capitals.

The developed had raised hopes among protestors in Amaravati but the same day Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy announced in the Assembly that the government will bring a comprehensive legislation. He made it clear that the government remained committed to three capitals.

The Assembly passed Andhra Pradesh Decentralisation and Inclusive Development of all Regions Repeal Bill 2021, repealing the Andhra Pradesh Decentralisation and Inclusive Development of all Regions Act 2020 and the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region development Authority Repeal Act 2020 Act.

Leaders of Amaravati movement and opposition parties claimed the government feared that the two legislations may be struck down by the High Court, which was hearing more than 50 petitions challenging them.

The petitioners had challenged the laws on ground being technically flawed as they were not passed by the Legislative Council, the upper house of the state legislature.

For nearly two years, the farmers, women and other sections of people in Amaravati have been continuing their protest. They say Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government’s move to dump Amaravati as the only capital and develop Visakhapatnam and Kurnool as administrative and judicial capitals, respectively, dashed their hopes of a bright future after giving away 33,000 acres of land. The move caused distress to 4,000 farmer families.

The three-capital proposal came as a bolt from the blue for the farmers relying on the mega plans of then Chandrababu Naidu government to build Amaravati on the banks of Krishna river as the dream capital and a world-class city, whose design was prepared by the Singapore government.

Tension during ‘Mahapadyatra’ by Amaravati farmers

0

Farmers and women from Amaravati participating in the ongoing ‘Mahapadyatra’ staged a sit-in on the road in Nellore district on Wednesday to protest the alleged restrictions imposed by the police. Alleging that the police are creating hurdles in their foot march, they sat on the road near Marupuru, leading to a huge traffic jam and triggering tension.

The protestors raised slogans denouncing the attempts by the police to impose restrictions.

The protest led to a nearly two km-long traffic jam, causing hardship to motorists.

The farmers and women, who are demanding that Amaravati be developed as the only state capital, resumed their ‘Mahapadyatra’ for the 31st day on Wednesday. Former minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader S. Chandramohan Reddy welcomed them.

The protestors alleged that the police at the instance of the leaders of the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) were creating problems during their walkathon. They said they were denied any place for a night halt at Marupuru.

After completing the day’s programme on Tuesday, the farmers and women were scheduled to stay at an ashram in Marupuru. However, the police conveyed to them that the villagers do not want them to stay there. This forced the farmers and women to go back to Nellore and resume the padyatra from Marupuru on Wednesday.

Called ‘Court to Temple’, the walkathon from Amaravati to Tirupati began on November 1. Raising slogans of ‘Jai Amaravati’, the protestors are covering 10-15 km every day.

Organised by Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi and Amaravati Joint Action Committee (JAC), it is scheduled to reach Tirupati on December 15 after stopping at 70 villages.

The Amaravati farmers have been protesting for over 700 days against the state government’s plans for trifurcation of the state capital. With the ‘Mahapadyatra’, their protest entered a new phase.

The police restrictions on the ‘Mahapadyatra’ at a few places in Prakasam district had also evoked strong protests from the organisers.

Last week, the YSRCP government withdrew two legislations enacted last year for trifurcation of the state capital. However, the government clarified that this was done to bring new and comprehensive legislation for developing three state capitals.

The protestors have vowed to continue their protest till the government drops its plans and continues with Amaravati as the only capital.

Squally weather fails to deter Amaravati farmers’ padayatra!!

0

The Maha Padayatra of the Amaravati farmers is gathering momentum by each passing day. As the yatris are braving rain and squally weather, the people and the political leaders are joining hands with them as a mark of solidarity. The Yatra has completed 27 days on Friday and on Friday, the yatra covered several parts in Nellore district.

The Yatra, which began on November 1 in Tulluru in the Amaravati capital area, will end on December 15 at Tirupati. On Friday, the Jana Sena leaders welcomed the yatra in Nellore district and walked through the streets of Nellore to express their support to the yatra.

On Friday, Jana Sena senior leader Nadendla Manohar joined the yatra in Nellore city. Speaking on the occasion, he said that his party would not allow the state capital to be moved even an inch from Amaravati. He said due to the faulty policies of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the state currently does not have any capital city. He said it was unfortunate that the ruling YSRCP was reneging on the agreement that the government had entered into with the capital farmers.

Meanwhile, TDP leaders expressed total support to the padayatra in Nellore. TDP parliamentary constituency incharge Abdul Aziz and assembly constituency incharge Kotamreddy Srinivasulu Reddy welcomed the yatra and walked with the padayatris for some distance. They slammed the YSRCP government for its faulty policies on the issue of the capital city.

Amaravati farmers to continue protests

0

Unfazed by state government’s plans to bring new and comprehensive legislation for developing three state capitals, farmers and women of Amaravati are determined to continue their protest, demanding Amaravati as the only state capital.

Though the developments of Monday morning had raised hopes among a section of people in Amaravati, the announcement later made by Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has not surprised those who are at the forefront in the movement for protection of Amaravati as the state capital.

For a few hours many believed that like Prime Minister Narendra Modi who withdrew three controversial farm legislations, Jagan Mohan Reddy will also take back the laws passed to create three state capitals. However, their celebration proved short-lived as the government made it clear that it remained committed to three capitals.

However, the move was not to reverse the decision of three capitals but to overcome the loopholes in the Bill. The statements made by the chief minister and then by finance minister Bugga Rajendranath left no one in doubt that the government is sticking to its stand on three capitals.

The hurry with which the Bill was passed to repeal the two Acts clearly indicates that the government feared that the two legislations may be struck down by the High Court, which was hearing more than 50 petitions challenging them.

The petitioners had challenged the laws on ground being technically flawed as they were not passed by the Legislative Council, the Upper House of the state legislature.

Farmers of 29 villages of the Amaravati region, who had given 33,000 acres of land for development of the state capital, have been protesting for more than 700 days and they are determined to carry on the protest till the government decides to have Amaravati as the only capital.

The ‘Maha padyatra’ by farmers from Amaravati to Tirupati entered the 24th day on Wednesday. The foot march resumed from the Sunnpubatti village in Nellore district.

Local people, farmers and political leaders are joining the farmers enroute as a show of solidarity. The protestors say while the government’s latest stand disappointed them, they have not given up.

“If the government tables the Bills again, we may plan a state-wide padyatra to mobilise support for our just cause,” said G. Tirupati Rao, general secretary, Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi, which along with Amaravati Joint Action Committee is spearheading the movement.

The leaders also claim that the growing support for ‘Maha padyatra’ has worried the government and it was creating problems as evident from the restrictions being imposed by police at various places.

The foot march, which began at Amaravati on November 1 and marked the beginning of a new phase of their movement, passed through Guntur and Prakasam district and entered Nellore district this week. It is scheduled to conclude at Tirupati on December 15. During the 45 days, the padyatra will pass through 70 towns and villages.

The participants, who are covering 10 to 15 km every day, are receiving support from all political parties barring the YSRCP. Two days ago, the BJP’s state leaders also joined them.

For nearly two years, the farmers, women and other sections of people in Amaravati have been continuing their protest. They say Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government’s move to dump Amaravati as the only capital and develop Visakhapatnam and Kurnool as administrative and judicial capitals dashed their hopes of a bright future after giving away 33,000 acres of land.

Farmers, who voluntarily gave lands ranging from half-an-acre to 50 acres, are left in the lurch. For every acre of cultivable land, they were promised 1,000 square yards of residential plot and 250 square yards of commercial plot with all the infrastructure. Almost all the farmers received the allotment papers but their dreams of owning developed plots remained on paper with the change of guard. They were also promised Rs 50,000 annuity per acre with an annual hike of 10 per cent.

Amaravati farmers continue foot march on Diwali

1

Farmers and women from Amaravati continued their ‘Mahapadyatra’ for a fourth day on Thursday to press for their demand that the city be retained as the only state capital of Andhra Pradesh.

Titled ‘court to temple’, the walkathon from Amaravati to Tirupati resumed Thursday morning from Pulladigunta in Guntur district. The farmers and women continued their march even on Diwali.

The participants said there was no festival for them till they achieve their goal to save Amaravati. “Our situation is that we can’t celebrate any festivals. It doesn’t matter if we don’t have light in our homes this Deepavali but we want to see the light in the entire state and this is possible if Amaravati is developed as the only state capital,” said one of the women participating in ‘Mahapadyatra’.

The participants will walk 11 km on Thursday to reach Prathipadu in the same district and after the night halt, will resume the foot march.

Some farmers from neighbouring Telangana also joined ‘Mahapadyatra’ in a show of solidarity with Amaravati farmers. Some leaders of opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) participated in the march.

The mega walkathon began from Thulluru on November 1 and is scheduled to conclude at Tirupati on December 17.

The Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi and Amaravati Joint Action Committee (JAC) are organising the foot march. The participants will walk 10-15 km every day for the next 45 days to reach Sri Venkateswara temple at Tirumala, passing through 70 major villages in Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore, and Chittoor districts.

Barring the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), all political parties are extending support to the ‘Mahapadyatra’. The YSRCP has, however, described the foot march as a ploy by TDP President and Leader of Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu.

With ‘Mahapadyatra’, the agitation by Amaravati farmers entered a new phase. They have been continuing their campaign for 660 days to protest against the State government’s plans for trifurcation of the state capital.

Farmers and other residents of Amaravati villages have been demanding that Amaravati be retained as the only state capital.

After coming to power in 2019, the YSR Congress Party government led by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has decided to shift the administrative capital to Visakhapatnam and the judicial capital to Kurnool while retaining Amaravati as only the legislative capital.

Farmers begin “Nyayasthanam to Devasthanam” yatra on Amaravati issue

0

The much-touted Amaravati farmers yatra from Tulluru to Tirupati is off to a flamboyant start with a large number of people turning up to see off the farmers. The yatra, titled Nyayasthanam nunchi Devasthanam Maha Pada Yatra, will be for a period of 45 days and would cover four districts – Guntur, Prakasam, Kurnool and Chittoor.

There would be village-level meetings and seminars all along the route. The farmers will create awareness about the yatra among the general public. The yatra would cover 70 major villages in four districts. The farmers would make a night-stay at appointed places. Before the launch of the yatra, the farmers offered prayers to Lord Venkateswara and the Goddess of Justice. They also performed all-religion padayatra. A large number of women and political leaders of various hues and shades were present.

The yatra is aimed at opposing the government’s move to have three capitals for Andhra Pradesh. It wants only Amaravati to be the capital of Andhra Pradesh. CPI leader Ramakrishna, Congress leader form Telangana Renuka Chowdary, TDP and Jana Sena leaders have extended their support to the yatra.

Initially, AP DGP Gowtham Sawang did not give permission to the yatra. However, the farmers approached the AP High Court, which gave them permission to take out a yatra. Later, the AP GDP gave them permission to take out the yatra. However, 157 persons were permitted to be part of the yatra. Similarly, no public meeting would be allowed during the yatra. The yatris were also told not to change the route map without the permission of the police and were directed not to indulge in violence and arson.

Amaravati farmers plan 45-day-long padayatra against 3-capital policy

1

The Amaravati farmers, who have been agitating for over 500 days, are all set to launch a Padayatra to highlight their plight. The farmers are demanding that the Jagan government’s decision to shift the capital out of Amaravati be rescinded. They are opposing the move to set up the executive capital in Visakhapatnam and the judicial capital in Kurnool in Rayalaseema.

The Padayatra will begin from Tullur, a prominent village in the Amaravati area on November 1. The yatra would be held for 45 days and would end at Tirupati by the Sankranthi festival. The yatra would cover over 400 kilo meters. Politicians, farmers, farm labourers, civil society leaders and others would undertake the padayatra to Tirupati. The Amaravati JAC, which will organize the yatra, is working out the nitty gritty.

The yatra is being planned to breathe life into the agitation and highlight the problems of the farmers of the region. As part of the padayatra, awareness meetings would be held and round tables would be organied at different places. The protesters will expose the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government and its decisions. While a yatra may not be able to settle the issue, but it will surely highlight the problems of the farmers, a leader of the Amaravati Joint action committee said.

The yatra assumes significance in the wake of the recent panchayal, MPTC and ZPTC elections, where the YSRCP has routed the TDP. In all the Amaravati villages, the YSRCP has won handsomely. Since then the government has been claiming that the people at large were with the government’s three-capitals policy. To prove this wrong, the padayatra is being planned to cover a large part of the state, the organizers said.

Amaravathi farmers shocker to Jagan govt in CID probe

1

The YSRCP government in Andhra Pradesh led by Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy got a shocker from the Amaravathi farmers during the investigation by AP CID officials on the Amaravati land scam today (Friday).

The CID sleuths called Amaravathi farmers, especially dalit farmers to Tadepalli police station for inquiry on Amaravathi land scam and alleged irregularities by previous TDP government on pooling of assigned lands for Amaravathi capital city.

However, the Dalit farmers categorically told CID officials that no one had taken their assigned lands forcibly and they handed over their assigned lands to state government on their own for the construction of Amaravathi capital city and that they had received compensation from the state government for giving away their lands.

This shocked CID officials who expected to gather evidence against former CM N Chandrababu Naidu and fix him in this case by submitting evidence to the AP High Court. The CID team expected that if they gather evidence against Naidu, it will make CM YS Jaganmohan Reddy very happy but all their expectations proved wrong.

Instead, the dalit farmers threatened to lodge SC, ST Atrocities Act against YSRCP MLA Alla Ramakrishna Reddy, who complained to CID that previous CM Chandrababu forcibly took Dalit lands for Amaravathi based on which CID filed FIR against Chandrababu and former municipal minister P Narayana.

The CID teams also called the previous Guntur joint collector and then CRDA commissioner Cherukuri Sridhar for inquiry but could not gather any evidence against Naidu.

Police thwart peaceful protest of Amaravati farmers at foundation stone

1

High tension prevailed in Uddandarayunipalem in Guntur district when large forces of police were deployed to evict the peaceful protesters who gathered at the tents that were put up near the foundation stone for the capital city of Amaravati which was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi exactly five years ago on October 22, 2015

Farmers and women took part in a padayatra from capital villages Rayapudi, Mandadam, Guntur to Uddhandrayunipalem, where the PM laid the foundation stone for Amaravati capital city.

Thousands of farmers from various villages in the area have gathered to protest against what they called the betrayal of the Jagan government on Amaravati capital issue. The farmers gathered at the foundation stone laid by the Prime Minister in Uddandarayunipalem in Amaravati.

The police forcibly evicted the peaceful protesters who held the green flags that have become the symbol of protesting farmers in Amaravati. The advance by police was swift and sudden. The protesting farmers of Amaravati got due permission from the police to gather at Uddandarayunipalem. As hundreds of police entered the protest area, the Amaravati farmers chanted “Save Amaravati.”

Police asked the Amaravati farmers to vacate the tents and leave Uddhandrayunipalem. The police repeatedly demanded the Amaravati farmers to vacate the tents and return home.

The police said another group owing allegiance to three-capitals gathered at the Amaravati foundation stone and raised slogans in favor of three capitals. The group was purportedly aided by the YSRCP leaders. “These are the actual paid artists. We are farmers from 29 villages and have been protesting since the last 310 days. The police clearly sided with the YSRCP group of protesters. This is a clear abuse of power,” said a farmer.

“The Jagan government orchestrated the protest led by the supporters of three capitals. This is a deliberate attempt to thwart the longest legitimate peaceful agitation of the Amaravati farmers,” said another farmer.

“We gave away more than 33,000 acres of our agricultural lands for Amaravati as capital. The protesters who came here raising slogans in favour of three capitals are paid artists and fake. They do not understand our agony and pain. We have lost our lands,” said another farmer.
