    Superstar Mahesh Babu’s silver jubilee film Maharshi is easily the most eagerly awaited biggie of the season. Sensible filmmaker Vamshi Paidipalli waited for nearly two years to direct this film which is touted to be a social drama laced with commercial elements.

    Let’s see if Mahesh Babu continues his success streak in Summer after Srimanthudu and Bharat Ane Nenu with Maharshi. Here is the first review on net.

    Story :

    Rishi (Mahesh babu) is an extremely talented youngster who has big dreams about his career. In final semester of M.Tech, Rishi gets selected for an MNC, moves to work in USA. In a short span, he becomes the CEO of a company named ‘Origin’. At this point, Rishi comes to know about the situation of his college mate and close friend Ravi (Allari Naresh) who secretly sacrificed his career for Rishi in past. Rishi wants to help Ravi, joins his fight against an Oil corporation giant in a rural Godavari region. Rest of the film is about how Rishi fights against the problems faced by the villagers.

    Analysis:

    First half of the film is decent. Here the director is able to elevate Mahesh babu as a college student and CEO. As younger Rishi, Mahesh Babu is energetic in his college life scenes. Mahesh excels as a college student and one wonders why Mahesh has shied away from doing these roles till now. To reflect a CEO’s lifestyle, many shots have been picturized in the backdrop of Manhattan Skyline. Mahesh’s friendship with Pooja ( Pooja Hegde) , Ravi ( Allari Naresh) has come out well. Interval episodes are emotional. Then onwards the trouble starts..

    Since this is Mahesh Babu’s milestone ( 25th) film , ‘ Maharshi’ team appear to be chosen a script with social cause as the main theme. In such films, first the conflict point must be strong enough and victims’ struggle should be effectively narrated to elevate the Hero’s subsequent helping hand. In this film director Vamsi Paidipally had tried to take Koratala Siva’s path but ended up as ineffective inspiration from the latter’s previous hits like Srimanthudu. Taking out USA and college scenes, movie is just a rehash of Srimanthudu and Bharat Ane Nenu (press meet scenes). One wonders what got Mahesh babu so excited about this script as it is just a rehash of all appealing scenes from his past movies.

    Hero Rishi’s journey has three variations as a student, as a CEO and the third one as to help the farmers in India. The inspirational attitude of Younger Rishi is good, the characterization of CEO is unreal and the last variation is partly good, partly boring. Jagapathi Babu’s Villainy is ineffective.

    Whole narrative of Rishi coming to village and sitting under trees seems trivial. As a CEO of a MNC, realistically no one can have luxury to take an indefinite leave. Second half until pre-climax has been dragged with slow pace. Initially Rishi tries to help the Villagers who are displaced because of Oil Company, suddenly switches to the farmers’ issue in the climax. Though both are the villagers’ problems, they are very contrast subjects. Pre-Climax ,Padara Padara Song, Climax are good and rescue the film to an extent.

    Songs are Okay on the screen but they doesn’t have stuff to commercially enhance the range of the film

    On technical side Sound design, background score are of excellent quality. Music director Devi Sri Prasad and Sound recording team has done fabulous job. Cinematography is another major asset. Director and Editor should take the blame for running this film for three hours.

    Production values are of top grade but the production cost may not be as much as hyped. Entire second half has been shot in a village set, under a tree! In first half, except the CEO Life Style visuals we won’t find many high budget required scenes.

    Performances

    Superstar Mahesh Babu is at his best in younger Rishi role, looked ravishing as CEO. However performance wise, his signature scenes are amiss. Pooja Hegde did her job well, looked beautiful as well. While Allari Naresh is impressive, Jagapathi Babu has been wasted. Prakash Raj, Jayasudha , Sai Kumar like seasoned artists are there but no good scenes for them to perform

    Positives:

    • First half college scenes
    • Interval Emotional scenes
    • Pre-Climax, Climax scenes
    • Appreciable social cause theme

    Negatives:

    • Story (A rehash of Mahesh previous films)
    • Flat narration in the second half and no emotional connect
    • Three hour runtime
    • Superficial solution to the villagers and farmers’ problems

    Verdict:

    Maharshi is a milestone for Mahesh which should be appreciated as a Good attempt, but might leave fans wanting for more.First half the film is decent, second half is slow paced one until pre-climax. Decent climax, pre-climax scenes come to the rescue of the film to an extent. Given the summer season and no competition, movie might get some eyeballs.

    Haven’t grown complacent as an actor: Mahesh Babu

    Actor Mahesh Babu, whose 25th film “Maharshi” hits screens on Thursday, says he is glad he hasnt become complacent with his own work in his two-decade long career.

    “I’m happy I haven’t grown complacent as an actor. I still prefer working with directors who come to me with bound scripts. Also, I will continue doing one film a year because there’s no point doing too many. Today, the economics of filmmaking has changed and the stakes involved are very high. Hence, there are always high expectations from audiences,” Mahesh said.

    He calls his forthcoming Telugu action drama “Maharshi” special because it is unlike any film he has done in his career so far.

    Mahesh is confident that “Maharshi”, directed by Vamshi Paidipally, will break many pre-conceived notions about him.

    “It’s a film that has so much to offer. It has a very powerful social message that is well-laced with other commercial elements. I say it’s a film unlike anything I’ve done so far because audiences can easily relate to my character Rishi. The journey of my character will be both interesting and inspiring,” Mahesh said.

    The film sees Mahesh play a college student, a business tycoon and a common man.

    Recalling the experience of returning to college, Mahesh said it was fun and challenging at the same time.

    “It was exciting to be playing a college-goer two decades after I left college. Vamshi and I discussed that the college portion has to be pulled off convincingly because it lasts for about 45 minutes. It took some self-convincing to really get into the skin of the character,” he said, clarifying that the college portion was not inspired by Aamir Khan’s “3 Idiots“.

    Mahesh sports three different looks to play his character.

    “People have been saying I look the same in all my films. Therefore, we decided to go with different looks to essay three different phases of my character. It’s not just with respect to my looks but ‘Maharshi’ will break many pre-conceived notions about me,” he said.

    At the film’s pre-release event last week, Mahesh said Vamshi waited three years to make “Maharshi”.

    Asked if it was really worth making Vamshi wait for such a long time to make the film, Mahesh said it was definitely worth it.

    “After I heard the narration, I was convinced I should do the film. It’s not about a rich guy returning from the US and giving back to the society. It’s like a semi biopic of a character called Rishi, who grows up in a middle class family, makes big bucks and becomes a business tycoon and eventually returns to his roots.

    “The journey is very inspiring and there’s so much depth in the story. Audiences will resonate with my story strongly,” Mahesh said.

    He said the film packs a powerful social message.

    “It’s not easy to make a film that has a message and at the same time is packed with all the commercial elements. Vamshi is a very honest filmmaker. In the two years he waited for me to complete my other commitments, he kept improvising on the script with his writers.”

    Mahesh also confirmed that a film with S.S Rajamouli is in the offing.

    “We are committed to work together. Producer K.L. Narayana will bankroll our project. But we can only collaborate when both of us are relieved of our current commitments. Hopefully, we should be free by next year,” he added.

    Telangana High Court grants ticket hike for Maharshi

    The other day, Telangana’s Cinematography Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav revealed that he is unaware about the ticket prices in the state and Telangana Government hasn’t given any special permissions. But the real news is that the Telangana theatre owners approached the High Court some time ago to increase the prices of tickets during this summer season. The Telangana High Court agreed and issued a notice.

    After this, the multiplexes across Hyderabad hiked the price to Rs 200 and the single screens are selling the tickets for Rs 125-150 during this season. The Telangana Government granted one extra show between 8 AM to 11 AM for Maharshi for two weeks. On the whole, all doors are open and the film is expected to open with a bang and register some stunning box-office numbers. Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, Maharshi is slated for May 9th release.

The theatrical rights of the film have been picked up for record prices and the film is hitting the screens on May 9th. The buyers across Andhra Pradesh applied permissions for one extra show along with ticket price at Rs 200. This would help the film big time if it gets positive talk.

    Things are different in Telangana as the film will not have any ticket hike however Dil Raju is applying for special show permissions across Nizam. Maharshi is expected to open with a bang and is carrying high expectations. Vamshi Paidipally is the director and Pooja Hegde is the heroine. Dil Raju, PVP and Ashwini Dutt are the producers.

    The whole movie unit of Maharshi is extremely confident on the product and the recently released trailer generated the much-needed buzz. The last single ‘Idhe Kadha Nee Katha’ is hard hitting and it added extra mileage for the project. Maharshi completed censor formalities last evening and the runtime was locked to be 178 minutes. Superstar fans are left worried about the excessive runtime of Maharshi.

    The film’s producer Dil Raju watched the final cut couple of weeks ago and he expressed his complete confidence in the film. He wanted to go ahead without a single cut. Dil Raju even expressed with his close friends and distributors that the runtime of Maharshi is not a barrier for the film as it delivers some outstanding emotional content throughout the second half. The last 45 minutes will move the audience carried the pre-release reports.

    The response for audio of Mahesh Babu’s Maharshi is a little underwhelming due to Devi Sri Prasad’s substandard work. Only a couple of songs impressed music lovers and the remaining songs turned out to be routine numbers. But, the final song ‘Idhe Kadha Nee Katha- The Soul of Rishi’ is the best in the lot for its impressive rendition with soul-stirring and superlative lyrics.

    Idhe Kadha Nee Katha seems to be a background song which comes at a crucial juncture in the plot. It reveals the basic theme of the story when the lead protagonist embarks on the journey to discover his happiness beyond his social status. The lyrics penned by Shree Mani are evocative and profound and the intense vocals given by Vijay Prakash makes it an instant chartbuster.

    Directed by Vamshi Paidipalli, the film is slated for release on May 9th.

    Mahesh Babu’s Summer release Maharshi has completed the censor formalities with no cuts. The censor team gave a U/A certificate and the run time is said to be close to three hours.

    Maharshi is set for a massive release worldwide on May 9th with overseas premiers scheduled one day before. As there are no other big-ticket releases in the next week, Maharshi is expected to open big in all areas. The theatrical trailer has received an amazing response and the makers are very happy with the output. Mahesh Babu is highly confident that Maharshi will be a memorable silver jubilee film in his career.

    Maharshi story has a noble theme with a good dose of action episodes in the second half. Mahesh Babu is playing a sensible role with three different shades. Pooja Hegde and Allari Naresh are essaying prominent roles. Directed by Vamshi Paidipalli, the film is a joint production of Dil Raju Ashwini Dutt and PVP. Devi Sri Prasad composed the soundtrack for the film.
