PS-1 vs PS-2 Worldwide Box-Office

S-2 has ended its run worldwide with a gross of 346 Cr and a distributor share of 160 Cr. The film is a blockbuster and the fourth highest-grosser among Kollywood Films. Other three are 2.0, PS-1 & Vikram. Collections are definitely huge but the film has performed much lesser than expectations when you look at the sequel collections of KGF-2 or Baahubali-2 in comparison with their prequels.

After the astonishing collections of PS-1, everyone expected PS-2 to open to bumper numbers which could be All Time Record numbers but the numbers fell pretty much lesser. In AP/TS PS-1 has done just 60% business of PS-2 despite there was larger scope for improvement. PS-1 Collected 9.7 Cr distributor share while PS-2 collected 6 Cr Share.

In Overseas PS-1 has collected close to $16 Million & PS-2 collected $21 Million.

Mani Ratnam heaps praise on SS Rajamouli

Ponniyin Selvan 2 (PS 2) is all set for a grand release in theatres on the 28th of April. As part of it, there was a promotional event in Hyderabad on Sunday. Speaking at the event, Mani Ratnam said, If Rajamouli had not made Baahubali in two parts, Ponniyin Selvan might not have happened in two parts.

Mani Ratnam said Rajamouli created a path for Indian mythological movies. He thanked Rajamouli on this occasion and said Baahubali gave confidence to the entire Indian cinema industry to do historical films. Mani Ratnam tried of making Ponniyin Selvan in 1994 and 2011, but both times he was unsuccessful.

Lyca Productions, Pen India Limited and Red Giant Movies are bankrolling this film. First part, PS1 was released on 30th September 2022 and it impressed only the Tamil audience.

The ace director tweeted the picture of his parents at the cinemas and wrote: “Proud parents!!! #PS1 #Godfather.”

While Mohan Raja has directed the Telugu hit film, ‘Godfather’, featuring Chiranjeevi in the lead, his younger brother Jayam Ravi plays the titular role of Arun Mozhi Varman in director Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’.

Telugu superstar Nagarjuna has congratulated director Mani Ratnam and his whole unit of ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1’ saying that the ace director has proven with the historical fiction what a master craftsman he always was.

At a press conference in Chennai called by the unit of his upcoming film ‘The Ghost’, which in Tamil is titled ‘Ratchan – The Ghost’, Nagarjuna said: “Before I talk about my upcoming film, let me congratulate Mani Sir. ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ had always been his dream. He had always talked about it to me as well quite a few times.”

Stating that the ace director had proven what a mastercraftsman he always was, the actor said: “I have such fond memories of working with him in ‘Geethanjali’ in 1988. I have seen his journey of work and what he’s achieved.

“I would like to congratulate Vikram, my dear brother Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha and of course, A.R. Rahman. I would like to congratulate all of them for the wonderful piece of art they have given us,” he added.

Stating that he had been born and brought up in Chennai, before his dad took him to Hyderabad, the actor said that it feels like coming home every time he comes down to Chennai.

Legendary director Mani Ratnam worked on the script of Ponniyin Selvan for years and the film was made in two parts. One wondered how Mani Ratnam could convince so many actors for the film. The biggest surprise is that this periodic drama was shot in 140 days. The shoot of both the installments of Ponniyin Selvan is wrapped up in 140 days. Ponniyin Selvan-1 is doing decent to good business in the Telugu States as the film has collected a Net of 3.5 Cr on the second day. Two days Net of the film stands at 8.20 Cr. Gross is about 9.85 Cr. The drop is around 25 percent which is good though Nizam has the best hold with just 10 percent drop. Distributor share of the film is estimated to be around 4.90 Cr for 2 days. It is released on recoverable advance basis of 10 Cr with an additional 2Cr P&P. Rajini, Kamal say they’re eagerly awaiting ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’ release

With just a couple of days left for director Mani Ratnam’s eagerly awaited magnum opus, ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ to hit the screens, the makers of the film have now released a video clip that shows the two biggest icons of Indian cinema – Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan – explaining that they are as eager as everybody else to watch the epic film.

The video clip begins with classical scenes from two landmark blockbuster films — ‘Nayagan’, which had Kamal Haasan playing the lead, and ‘Thalapathy’, which had Rajinikanth playing the lead — being showcased in no particular order.

Interestingly, both these blockbusters were directed by Mani Ratnam and had gone on to emerge as cult classics in Tamil cinema.

Towards the end, visuals of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan participating in the audio launch event of ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’, which happened at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai over 20 days ago, have been reproduced.

Rajinikanth says, “Ponniyin Selvan has marvellous characterisations. It has heroism, beauty, fear, disgust, laughter.”

Mani Ratnam’s ‘PS1’ unit releases sneak peek into film

The unit of director Mani Ratnam’s upcoming magnum opus, ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’, has now released a sneak peek in to the movie, much to the delight of fans who are waiting with bated breath for the film to release on September 30.

The one minute 32 second long video clip released by the unit shows the Pandyas swearing an oath to wipe out the royal lineage of the Cholas in the presence of Goddess Kotravai.

A dialogue that a character utters indicates that the Pandyas have been defeated in battle and have retreated to the jungles.

“The brave Pandyas will wash your feet with Chola blood. The Pandyan kingdom is where the Pandyan Emperor lives. This forest is Madurai to us,” he says and adds, “Behold Amarabujanga Pandyan, son of Veera Pandiyan. He graces the Pandyan throne.”

The warriors then pledge their lives to Goddess Kali and to the Pandya flag and its emperor.

“For killing our beloved king Veera Pandyan, we will sever the head of Chola prince Aditha Karikalan. Death to his brother Arunmozhi Varman. Death to the chola Emperor Sundara Chozhar. We’ll offer their blood to Kottravai,” they swear.

The film is based on the classic Tamil novel ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ by eminent writer Kalki.

The film, called by Mani Ratnam as his dream project, is among the most expensive projects ever undertaken in the country.

It has the best in business handling each of its departments. A R Rahman has scored the music for this epic historical and cinematography is by Ravi Varman. National Award winning art director Thotta Tharani was in charge of production design while Mani Ratnam’s trusted editor Sreekar Prasad has handled its editing.

Chiyaan Vikram, who was in the national capital to promote his film ‘Ponniyan Selvan I’, talked about sharing screen space with Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan again after ‘Raavanan’ and said that the actress is picture perfect.

Vikram said: “There have been many beauty queens but I must say Aish has something that has stolen everyone’s heart. She is picture perfect and I have seen her films, so it is not just about beauty but everything. She is always under a microscope and constantly being watched. ‘Ponniyin Selvan-1’ characters wear real gold jewellery, says Mani Ratnam

The upcoming Mani Ratnam film ‘Ponniyin Selvan-1’ spells royalty as it uses actual gold jewellery for its characters and was designed keeping in mind the small details of the Chola period.

The film, based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel of the same name, tells the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I.

Talking about the jewellery design of the film, the director of the film, Mani Ratnam said in a conversation with IANS: “We gave special emphasis to the costume to make them believable and lend the period-specific authenticity and still evoke that sense of royalty. We were very lucky to have Kishandas (the jewellery designer) on board with us and we worked with actual gold jewellery.”

He added: “The artisans worked around the small details of the Chola period and made the ornaments specific to the characters.”

Gold, though, tends to behave differently on camera given its radiance. So was there a lot of back and forth on the design? The director revealed: “It was not very difficult once we figured out the texture. It was more about the design that we focussed on as to what will be right for a particular character.”

‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’, which features an ensemble star cast of Vikram, Karthi, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman and R. Parthiban, is arriving in cinemas on September 30.

Ditching the comfort of business class in an airplane, Oscar-winning music composer A.R. Rahman along with stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram and Trisha were seen flying on a budgeted flight as they travelled for the promotions of their upcoming film ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’.

Tollywood producer Dil Raju is releasing the Telugu version of Ponniyin Selvan and his team made grand arrangements for the event. The entire team of Ponniyin Selvan reached the event at 7 PM and the event got concluded at 9 PM. Not a single bouncer was spotted around the team. This never happened in any of the recent Tollywood events. The guests and the audience are surprised with the time sense and dedication of Ponniyin Selvan.

The entire cast including Sarathkumar, Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Vikram Prabhu and others were present for the event.
