Jagan seeks early appointment with PM to salvage Vizag steel plant

2

Following Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman vowing to 100 percent privatize the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking an appointment to explain and convince him to stall the sale process.

“I request you to kindly give me an appointment to explain all the options as narrated above, to revive and put RINL, Visakhapatnam back on track,” wrote Reddy.

He offered to bring an all-party delegation including the representatives of trade unions to represent their concerns directly to Modi.

Panicked by Sitharaman’s categorical clarification in the Parliament on Monday, the CM sought Modi’s early appointment and reminded his letter a month ago.

Reddy recalled the suggestions he doled out to the PM and also the Union Minister of Steel to revive the steel plant and make it strong financially.

“In the meantime, Sitharaman in her reply in Lok Sabha on Monday stated that the Government of India would go ahead with the plan of 100 percent disinvestment is a matter of great concern for the people of AP, employees of RINL and other stakeholders,” lamented the chief minister.

He reiterated that 32 people sacrificed their lives after prolonged protests to procure the steel plant which performed well between 2002 to 2015, earning profits with positive net worth.

Reddy again requested Modi to consider the following measures for the revival of the steel plant: continuing operations to achieve a turnaround, allotting captive iron ore mines to reduce input costs, financial restructuring and monetizing the steel plant’s land to make it cash-rich.

“Short term loans along with long term loans could be converted into equity taking off repayment pressures and interest burden. The high-cost debt which is actually Rs 22,000 crore is being serviced at interest rates as high as 14 percent,” noted the CM.

He said these loans could be converted into equity by the banks to remove the interest burden totally and listing RINL, Vizag on the stock exchange, giving the banks exit option through the stock exchange route among other options.

“I assure you that the AP government will closely work with the government of India under your able leadership in making this happen and together we can revive the plant for unlocking the greater value to the society and in particular to the people of AP. I seek an early appointment in this regard,” Reddy added.

Sajjala dares Pawan to defy Centre on VSP

4

The Centre’s latest statement on Vizag Steel Plant triggered heated debates between Andhra political parties. The BJP AP leaders have kept mum on the issue as usual. But, the rival TDP and the Jana Sena parties have targetted the YCP in a big way. Both Chandrababu Naidu and Pawan Kalyan have made scathing attacks on Jagan Reddy.

Amid this, CM’s advisor Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy has issued a strong counter. This time, he advised Pawan Kalyan not to make meaningless comments against Jagan Reddy. Instead of wasting time on this, Pawan Kalyan should demand clarifications and defy the BJP Central leaders. Why is Pawan targeting the YCP regime when the Union Minister has clearly said there is no involvement of the AP Government in the privatisation plan?

Sajjala further asserted that there was no new point in Nirmala Sitaraman’s statement. The yellow media is carrying out a needless campaign. CM Jagan Reddy has already written a letter asking the Prime Minister to stall the privatisation of the Steel Plant.

Sajjala disclosed that Posco has been asked to set up their plant at Krishnapatnam. He asserted that CM Jagan knew very well how to save the Visakha Steel Plant.

Shock to AP: Centre’s ‘key statement’ on Vizag Steel

In a shocker to Andhra Pradesh, the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre today (Monday) made a crucial statement on Vizag Steel Plant in the Parliament,.

The Centre made it clear that it will not go back on the privatisation of Vizag Steel Plant.

Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman made this statement on Monday.

Nirmala categorically stated that the Andhra Pradesh government has no shares in Vizag Steel Plant.

She said the Centre owns 100 per cent shares in Vizag Steel Plant and this 100 per cent share will be sold out to private companies.

Nirmala also clarified that the Centre had negotiations with AP government on privatisation of Vizag Steel and Centre will ask the AP goverment’s support for privatisation whenever the need arises.

Nirmala’s statement was in response to the question raised by MPs Madhavi and Satyanarayana in Parliament today.

It may be recalled that AP observed total ‘state bandh’ recently against privatisation of Vizag Steel and all parties including ruling YSRCP supported bandh.

But Nirmala’s statement in Parliament proves that Centre ignored all the agitations being held in AP against Vizag Steel privatisation.

Andhra govt endorses statewide bandh opposing steel plant sale

2

The YSR Congress Party-led Andhra Pradesh government has endorsed a statewide bandh call given by labour union leaders opposing the privatisation of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) on Friday.

“The Andhra Pradesh government extends solidarity to the statewide bandh called by the workers on Friday opposing the decision to privatise VSP,” state Transport Minister Perni Venkatramaiah said.

The minister said that they will fight to any extent to retain the steel plant as people’s asset, which was procured after the sacrifice of 32 lives.

Recently, the state Cabinet took a decision to move a resolution in the Assembly, opposing the Central government’s plan to privatise VSP and also for putting more ‘pressure’ on the Centre.

In February, Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had met the labour union leaders spearheading the fight against the privatisation of VSP and informed them that he had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting the available possibilities to salvage the plant.

Allocation of mines in Odisha, converting bank debt into equity, and selling steel plant’s surplus land were the three major suggestions given by Reddy to the Prime Minister, among others.

The labour unions leaders have already issued posters notifying the bandh.

Likewise, many people, including the employees of VSP and their family members, are protesting against the privatisation plan.

In a unique protest, some youth were found dancing on the road, blaring a Telugu song questioning as to what right the government had to sell the plant, also questioning the entity which will come forward to buy it.

Many protesters have also launched a hunger strike against the decision. Protesters from different departments such as the blast furnace have also launched their demonstrations.

“Private sector companies’ main motive is to earn profits but my company’s (VSP) main motive is to provide service to the public along with profits. Give one chance to RINL with captive mines, we will prove what we are,” said Gopal, one of the protesters.

Another protester alleged that the Central government is waiving the debts of scamsters and also wiping out the public sector as a whole.

Visakhapatnam North MLA and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Ganta Srinivasa Rao recently submitted his resignation to the Assembly Speaker opposing the steel plant sale plan.

All signs are pointing towards a long-term fight against the privatisation plan, adding one more indefinite strike to the two already playing out in the state.

Two indefinite protests are currently underway in Amaravati, one supporting the capital city trifurcation and the other opposing it.

Secret deal for 3rd partner in VSP-Posco joint firm

3

The Jaganmohan Reddy Government in Andhra Pradesh is facing greater criticism than even the Modi Government at the Centre on the issue of privatisation of the Visakha Steel Plant. The CM and MP Vijay Sai Reddy and all YCP leaders have asserted their party’s stand against the privatisation.

Now, many more startling aspects are coming out with respect to the agreement reached between the VSP and the Posco company. As per this, they will form a joint venture in which there is a scope for involving a third partner as well. Doubts are arising on the secret deal behind this aspect.

Moreover, reports say that it was clearly mentioned in the agreement that the Posco company would be given a minimum of 50 percent stake in the new firm. But there was no mention about the share of the Visakha Steel Plant (VSP). At the same time, it was proposed to give 1,167 acres land to the new firm to be created with Posco. There was another provision for giving additional land if needed.

Another arbitrary provision that came to light in the VSP-Posco agreement was that the VSP would have no right to decide on the values of its lands. An outside expert would be appointed to fix this.

Vizag steel privatisation grabs political centre stage in Andhra

0

The Central government’s decision to privatise Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) is going to roil Andhra Pradesh for a long time to come, both socially and politically.

The decision came as a bolt from the blue for the thousands of VSP’s employees and their families, who would have been thinking that their job was a secure government job.

Suddenly, the company famous for producing steel products such as rebars, plain rounds, wire rod coils, structural, special steel and others is thrown into uncertainty.

At a time when the state is witnessing two indefinite protests in Amravati, one supporting the trifurcation of the capital city and other opposing, Visakhapatnam or Vizag has just joined the list with its own share of demonstrations to salvage the steel plant.

Of the three capital cities planned in the southern state, two, legislative capital Amaravati and executive capital Vizag, are in the grip of protests now and nobody knows how long they will last.

For a change, all political parties are on the same page as far as opposing the privatisation bid goes. However, the principal parties — ruling YSRCP and opposition TDP — are losing no opportunity to snipe at each other on the issue.

Hundreds of steel plant employees, their family members, Left parties, opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) leaders and supporters and others are undertaking protests to stall the privatisation.

The agitators have also taken out a few massive motorcycle rallies to protect the steel plant which was sanctioned to the state after 32 lives were sacrificed decades ago.

In fact, supporters of the steel plant wasted no time in getting together to oppose the privatisation plan tooth and nail the moment it was announced in the 2021-22 budget.

“This is the worst decision taken by the Modi government. Making a 100 per cent strategic sale of the steel plant is wicked. Andhra Pradesh developed because of Visakhapatnam steel plant,” said Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Narsing Rao in one of the first agitations opposing the move.

He reminded that the city has the history of salvaging the Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCI) by fighting with the Central government.

If the need arises, he threatened that agitators would stall the state to save the steel plant from privatisation.

CPI leader J. V. Satyanarayana Murthy said people of Visakhapatnam need not be taught how to fight, reminding that the steel plant itself was procured after a big movement.

“Though Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman came as a daughter-in-law to Andhra Pradesh, she has now thrown chilli powder into her mother-in-law’s eyes. She is attempting to plunder the riches of this state or dole them out to the people the Centre likes but we will retaliate,” Murthy added.

Not only the steel plant employees, he added, people in Andhra Pradesh would repel the move to sell the steel plant.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi opposing the proposed privatisation of the Steel Plant.

In the letter, he urged Modi to reconsider disinvestment of the steel plant and suggested a few alternatives to the move, saying the steel plant stands as an icon of Telugu achievement in the people’s collective psyche.

“The people of my state rallied for the VSP in which 32 people have laid down their lives. On April 17, 1970, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had announced the Government of India’s decision to establish a steel plant at Visakhapatnam culminating the decade-long public agitation “Visakha Ukku-Andhrula Hakku” in the undivided AP,” the CM added.

He said the plant registered good performance between 2002 to 2015, earning profits with positive net worth, which pragmatically turned-around after being reported to the Board of Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR) as a sick company earlier.

A couple of days after Reddy’s letter, actor-politician Pawan Kalyan flew to Delhi to meet with the Central leadership to ‘save’ the steel plant but later conceded that the public enterprise is under the purview of the Central government.

Meanwhile, TDP national general secretary Nara Lokesh upped the ante on the ruling party, alleging that YSRCP was playing a dubious role and failing to put pressure on the Central government to stop the privatisation.

“The steel plant should remain in government control, considering how Andhra people waged prolonged agitations and farmers gave away thousands of acres of their ancestral lands. The Jagan Moharn Reddy regime is playing a dubious role in the whole privatisation plan,” claimed Lokesh.

Ganta Srinivas Rao, a TDP MLA from Vizag even put in his papers protesting the steel plant sale plan while TDP supremo Nara Chandrababu Naidu went a step ahead and demanded Reddy to stop the privatisation or resign.

“Stop the sale of the steel plant or resign and go to jail or wherever you (CM) would like to go. If YSRCP continued its games of betrayal against the people’s sentiments even now, the people of the state would rise in revolt and they would not allow the ruling party leaders to move on the roads,” roared Naidu at a public meeting in the port city.

He was supposed to extend solidarity to party leader Palla Srinivas’ indefinite fast protesting the privatisation but the government forcibly ended the hunger strike.

To calm the tempers of the agitators, Reddy met with the labour union leaders on Wednesday and informed them of the three suggestions he gave to Modi to salvage the plant.

Allocation of mines in Odisha, converting bank debt into equity, and selling steel plant’s surplus land were the three major suggestions given by Reddy to the Prime Minister, among others.

Already, some people have started targeting the CM for suggesting selling only surplus land, attributing several apprehensions.

It remains to be seen if Modi would heed to any of those suggestions or just go ahead privatising the plant.

According to Reddy, the plant has about Rs 22,000 crore debt, out of which up to Rs 11,000 crore was availed as working capital debt, including some debts availed at hefty interest rate of up to 14 per cent.

One thing is definitely clear, the Central government’s privatisation move has thrown a spanner into Reddy’s plans of moving the executive capital to Vizag, sources said he was keen on doing it in March.

Will the steel plant protests, participated by all the opposition parties be of any hindrance to the capital move plans? We have to wait and watch.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not do any favour for itself by the privatisation move as capturing power in the southern state is one of its unfulfilled dreams.

Depriving the special category status, railway zone and other concessions to the state, which suffered irreparably during the politically opportunistic bifurcation will not endear BJP to the Telugus, despite Sunil V. Deodhar, BJP’s state co-in-charge staying put in the state.

Meanwhile, the Central government hasn’t responded to Reddy’s suggestions or the protests in faraway Vizag, even as it is busy dealing with the mighty farmers protests in near Delhi.

Naidu writes to PM, steps up pressure on Jagan

7

Allegations and counter allegations are going on between the YCP and the TDP leaders on the Vizag Steel Plant agitation. CM Jagan Reddy has written a letter to PM to cancel the VSP sale a few days ago. The TDP questioned whether that letter has reached the PM or not and whether the CMO has sent that letter to the PMO or not. Then, the YCP leaders started questioning why TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu is not bringing pressure on the PM.

As a counter to the ruling party challenges, the TDP boss dashed off a letter to Modi, urging him to stop privatisation of the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) commonly known as the Visakha Steel Plant (VSP). He stressed the need for protection of the steel plant as it was a matter of pride for the State and it remained a lifeline for the North Andhra region. He recalled how the Andhras made huge sacrifices and took out prolonged agitation for achieving the Visakha Steel Plant. It stood as a symbol of the unity of the Telugu people and an everlasting sentiment for them.

The TDP chief said that in its budget for 2021-22, the Government of India (GOI) has proposed to privatise the RINL. The Secretary, Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), announced that the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the proposal to privatise RINL on January 27, 2021. Since the plant had accumulated losses to the tune of about Rs. 4,000 crore from 1991 to 2000, the same was referred to the Board of Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR) by the Atal Behari Vajpayee Government. Upon the request of the then AP Government, the Government of India provided a restructuring package of Rs. 1,333 crore, which helped to turn the plant profitable.

Mr. Naidu said that the RINL Steel Plant was facing losses due to reasons such as absence of captive mines and burden of high interest rates on loans. In this backdrop, the Government of India or the Government of Andhra Pradesh may provide captive mines to the RINL Steel Plant to turn the fortunes of RINL steel plant. At current market prices, the land that the steel plant is located alone costs about Rs 1.5 Lakh to 2 Lakh Crores.

The TDP told Mr. Modi that people from more than 68 villages gave up their land for this steel plant. About 16,000 families gave up 26,500 acres of land. They were promised one job each. However, only about 8,000 families have received jobs so far. In spite of many hurdles, the steel plant was built and dedicated to the nation in 1992, also paving way for the development of Visakhapatnam city. Not only is RINL Steel Plant the pride of Visakhapatnam and Andhra Pradesh, but also the entire country.

Jagan raises Spl Status but not steel plant at PM meet

4

AP Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy attended an online meeting of the Niti Ayog. It was presided over by Prime Minister Modi. The Chief Ministers of other states also took part in the meeting. Mr. Jagan Reddy made a special mention of how Andhra Pradesh suffered a serious setback because of lack of Special Status. He had scores of other problems of AP in front of the PM but not the current burning topic of the steel plant privatisation.

Mr. Jagan Reddy said the Centre itself said AP was badly hit during the bifurcation but it had not fulfilled the promise on Special Status till now. The CM had also raised the need for the Centre’s approval for the revised estimates of the Polavaram project. He sought approval for 13 medical colleges. He also told the Prime Minister that his Government has been strictly implementing many reforms as per the expectations of the Central Government.

In a very unexpected way, the Chief Minister remained silent on the steel plant issue during the PM meeting. On the other side, his party MPs were saying that they would take up protests against the VSP sale in Delhi soon.A lot of confusion is going on in the steel plant issue. There has been no clarification from the PM or Amit Shah or any Union Minister officially whether the Centre has withdrawn the VSP sale or not. However, BJP AP leaders and AP CM have said there is no decision taken on the privatisation so far.

Will Vizag people trust Vijay Sai ‘Padayatra’?

3

The YCP came to power on the strength of the State-wide Padayatra of Jaganmohan Reddy. He drew inspiration from his father YSR whose Padayatra brought Congress to power in 2004. Many YCP leaders have held Padayatras in the footsteps of the YSR family members. Now, Vijay Sai Reddy began his Padayatra in Vizag and asserted his commitment to saving the steel plant from privatisation.

Jagan Reddy made a lot of promises during his Padayatra but after coming to power, he was not being able to fulfill most of them. Vijay Sai Reddy made controversial statements in the beginning itself and he indicated broadly that the VSP privatisation was unstoppable. At one stage, he said he would get the Prime Minister’s appointment for the agitators but would not guarantee a positive outcome.

On his part, CM Jagan said that he wanted to bring the Posco company to Kadapa or Krishnapatnam or Bhavanapadu but Vizag did not come up in the list. At the same time, he suggested the sale of 7,000 acres of land to VSP to solve its financial problems.

As it is, Vijay Sai has been known for his close relations with Modi-Shah at the Centre. Everytime the YCP is in a crisis, the MP would be seen knocking on the doors of the Union Ministers to get relief. This time, Vijay Sai is preferring Padayatra to lobbying in Delhi. The question is whether the people will believe in the Padayatras of political leaders any longer if they go on adopting double standards.

GVL ultimate logic on steel plant agitation

5

BJP MP GVL Narasimha Rao is no doubt an expert crisis manager. But the problem is his logic is missing the people of Andhra Pradesh too often. After a long time, he has now come to the fore once again to make his presence felt in AP politics. This time, he says that all the other parties in the State are conspiring to corner the BJP on the issue of the agitation against the privatisation of the Visakha Steel Plant.

GVL has asked why the other parties are running an agitation when the Central Government has not taken a decision to privatise the steel plant. His latest argument is that in the name of the agitation for the protection of the VSP, the rival parties are making needless allegations against the BJP.

One more interesting comment made by GVL is that the VSP stir is also aimed at diverting the attention of the AP people from more important issues. For example, the pastors are bringing hundreds of crores to continue the religious conversions. The Ministers and the MLAs are resorting to constitutional violations. Only to hide their failures, this steel plant agitation is brought to the fore. GVL conveniently ignored the Union Minister’s statement in the Rajya Sabha itself on the VSP privatisation in reply to a question raised by Vijay Sai Reddy.

Veerraju gives ultimate twist to steel plant agitation

4

After three days of his Delhi visit, BJP AP President Somu Veerraju has made a stunning and surprising announcement today. He said that the Central Government has not made any sort of statement on the Visakha Steel Plant. Veerraju further said that it was only Chandrababu Naidu and the communists who were raising a hue and cry. The whole steel plant agitation was their creation only to embarrass and counter the BJP rise in Andhra Pradesh.

By what Veerraju has said, the overall agitation against the privatisation of the VSP has become irrelevant. Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s meetings with the agitating workers at the Vizag airport have also become irrelevant. Obviously, Veerraju has also preferred to ignore the MoU that was signed with the South Korean Posco company as well.

Interestingly, there are no reports from the BJP side so far about Veerrajju and his party AP leaders efforts to meet Amit Shah. There was also no clarity on the response of the other Union Ministers to the BJP AP team’s representations for the merger of the Vizag Steel Plant with SAIL or some other PSU.

At the same time, Veerraju’s latest comments have given rise to doubts whether the Modi-Shah regime was silently washing its hands of the steel plant controversy.

Police foil Palla’s fast-unto-death for Vizag Steel Plant

1

The AP Police have foiled TDP former MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao’s indefinite hunger strike in Vizag. The TDP leader has been on fast unto death for the past six days in protest against the privatisation of the Visakha Steel Plant. He was shifted from his protest camp to the KIMS Icon hospital.

The shifting came hours ahead of TDP chief and former CM Chandrababu Naidu’s visit to the port city to call on the striking TDP ex MLA. The police had to forcefully shift Palla Srinivasa Rao as he resisted their efforts and refused to give up his indefinite hunger strike.

Palla’s protest has created a political sensation in North Andhra districts with a large number of people expressing their solidarity. He has been serving as the TDP Vizag Parliament President. He is the former MLA of Gajuwaka assembly constituency in which the steel plant is located.

Only yesterday night, the TDP at its high level meeting held the Jagan Reddy regime responsible for anything that would happen to Palla’s life. The TDP also offered to extend its support if CM Jagan would lead the agitation against the privatisation.

Will Jagan and Naidu join hands to stall VSP sale?

1

Indications are that the Modi Government is very serious about privatising the Visakha Steel Plant. This is part of the Centre’s plans to take forward its disinvestment strategies to boost the economy. The BJP AP leaders, who assured to take it up with Modi-
Shah, have fallen silent. BJP AP President Somu Veerraju, who raised his voice on Ramatheertham, is not taking an active part in the steel plant agitation.
Amid these concerns, the Opposition leaders are stressing the need for unity among all the political parties in AP in order to bring greater pressure on Modi. Today, YCP Minister Avanti Srinivas and TDP MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao shared a common dais to express their solidarity to the steel plant agitation. They have asserted their respective personal commitments to stalling the privatisation.
Quickly responding to this, CPI National Secretary K Narayana has stressed the need for CM Jaganmohan Reddy and former CM Chandrababu Naidu to join hands to fight for the steel plant. Narayana told Avanti Srinivas and Ganta Srinivas that it was not enough for them to share the dais but they should use their good offices to bring Jagan and Naidu onto a common stage.
Doubtless to say, the AP parties and leaders are greatly worried that the Vizag steel agitation is going to be a prolonged one considering the overall political mood.

Finally, YCP MPs to meet Amit Shah over Visakha Steel

1

All round criticism has forced Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy to finally send his party MPs to meet Union Minister Amit Shah on the issue of Visakha Steel Plant privatisation. Till now, the CM has not opened his mouth to convey his views to the public. Vijay Sai Reddy’s initial remarks have gone into the public that the YCP is not much interested in the agitation. Later, reports came out that Jagan Reddy held talks with Posco in 2019 itself.

As a result, there has been rising criticism against the YCP 28 MPs in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for not making any efforts in Delhi to save the steel plant. As such, all these ruling party MPs are going to meet Amit Shah to discuss the issue today.

On the other hand, TDP Gajuwaka Ex MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao began his indefinite hunger strike. The steel plant falls under the Gajuwaka segment. Also, Vizag North MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao is going to start his own protest camp near the steel plant from today.

Retired civil servants like Lok Satta Jayaprakash Narayan and JD Lakshminarayana have stressed the need for strong agitation to get a better deal for AP. On its part, the TDP is saying that the privatisation should be stopped altogether since the steel plant has been a matter of strong sentiment for the Andhra people.
Jana Senani Pawan Kalyan has already the Union Ministers and expressed his views against the privatisation. The BJP AP leaders have also opposed the sale but are not able to actively join the protests. Obviously, the agitation is unstoppable.

YSRCP not putting pressure on Centre on Vizag steel plant: TDP

1

The opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Thursday accused the ruling YSRCP in Andhra Pradesh of “playing a dubious role” and not putting pressure on the Centre to stall the ongoing privatisation of the Vizag steel plant.

“The steel plant should remain in government control, considering how Andhra people waged prolonged agitations and farmers gave away thousands of acres of their ancestral lands. The Jagan Moharn Reddy regime is playing a dubious role in the whole privatisation plan,” claimed TDP national General Secretary Nara Lokesh

The opposition leader claimed that the people of Visakhapatnam would chase away senior YSRCP leader and Rajya Sabha member V Vijayasai Reddy due to his attempts to undermine the agitations on the issue.

“When plant employees and the people were rising up in massive protests, Sai was bold enough to say that he cannot give an assurance to the agitators but only get an appointment with the Prime Minister,” the TDP supremo’s son said.

Branding Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) leaders as “fake”, Lokesh alleged that they were issuing false statements to demotivate people.

According to the TDP leader, YSRCP candidates would lose their security deposits in the next Assembly elections if they failed to fight against the ongoing privatisation.

He said that the TDP would support the agitations to bring all possible pressure on the state and central governments.

Former TDP MLA from Gajuwaka, Palla Srinivasa Rao, has already begun a hunger strike against the plant’s privatisation.

Lokesh claimed that the TDP had bagged 38 per cent of the seats in the first phase of the four-phased rural local bodies’ elections, despite all-round attacks by YSRCP.

“The YSRCP tried to win the polls through threats, kidnappings, tearing of nomination papers etc due to fear of losing. The YSRCP leaders even sent WhatsApp messages to voters to threaten withdrawal of pensions and house site pattas if they did not vote for the YSRCP,” he claimed.

Referring to TDP state President Kinjarapu Atchannaidu’s arrest, Lokesh said that he was sent to jail even though he did not issue threats to rival candidate in Nimmada village. On the other hand, he alleged, Kannababu Raju who was aligned with YSRCP openly threatened an opposition candidate but was given station bail.

On Thursday, Lokesh visited Sri Lakshminarasimha Swamy temple in Mangalagiri town and inaugurated a health camp of Lakshminarasimha goldsmiths welfare society.

He announced Rs 5 lakh financial support for the welfare of goldsmiths and promised them continuous TDP support.

Modi Govt reached deal with Posco on Vizag Steel

2

The Modi Government has clarified that a non-binding deal has been reached between Visakha Steel Plant and the Posco company of South Korea. As such, there is no final agreement on the share of Posco in the steel plant. The non-binding agreement was reached in 2019.

Giving these details in Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan revealed that Posco has been asking for a more than 50 percent share. As part of this deal-making, the Posco teams have visited the Visakha Steel Plant for over four times. After Jagan Reddy came to power, they have visited thrice. Prior to that, they made one visit in 2018.

The Union Minister has also said that a joint working group has also been formed to exchange information and details for reaching a final deal on this.

The Centre’s latest disclosure came as a big shock to the protesting labour unions and the AP political parties. Already, dharnas and hunger strikes were going on at the steel plant vicinity ever since the news broke out on the privatisation.

TDP MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao has once again announced that he would give his resignation in the Assembly format and hand it over to the Speaker soon. There would be no question of going back on the steel plant agitation.

Can Pawan-BJP AP leaders prevent Vizag Steel sale?

3

More than anybody else, the burden of stopping the privatisation of the Vizag Steel Plant seems to be much more on the BJP AP leaders and their ally Jana Sena Party. This is why they have been giving repeated assurances to the people that they will convince the Modi Government. Former Union Minister Daggubati Purandeswari has already indicated their decision to go to Delhi to stall the privatisation.

Senani Pawan has visited the National Capital and met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Senani has submitted a memorandum asking Shah to stall the privatisation of the Vizag Steel considering how it was seen as a symbol of many sacrifices made by the Andhra people.

The big question is whether the BJP AP leaders and Pawan Kalyan could match with the lobbying tactics being employed by the Jagan Reddy team in Delhi politics. Usually, all important decisions would be informed to the BJP State unit leaders when they were considered by the Delhi leaders. It was surprising that the BJP AP leaders could not get a single hint about the steel plant privatisation. Most of them came to know after it was announced in the Parliament.

Pawan and the BJP has got a political coordination committee at the national level but even this committee has no remote idea about the steel plant issue. While the YCP silently pushed the privatisation to a crucial level, the BJP AP leaders and Pawan Kalyan are now facing a severe test of their commitment to the people.

Massive rally at Vizag Steel Plant by all-party leaders

2

The ruling YCP Ministers and MLAs are taking all steps to wash their hands of the privatisation of Visakha Steel Plant. The YCP leaders are taking part in the ongoing agitation in the port city. The all-party leaders took out a massive rally to the steel plant back gate today. Minister Muthamsetti Srinivas, MP MVV Satyanarayana and YCP MLAs took part. The activists of trade unions like INTUC and AITUC participated in the protest in large numbers.

Despite the rising protests from all sides in Andhra Pradesh, the Modi Government has not given its reaction till now. On their part, BJP leaders like Daggubati Purandeswari have asserted their total opposition to the steel plant privatisation. They have assured to take it up with the Prime Minister and the Union Ministers.

However, the workers’ unions and all the political parties in the State were continuing their protests in different forms. The TDP has said that it is not just enough for the Chief Minister to sit silent after writing a letter to the PM. The Opposition demanded the CM to make a visit to Delhi and meet the Prime Minister to stop the disinvestment of the steel plant.

Some TDP MLAs in North Andhra have announced that they are ready to resign from their posts to take a total plunge into the Vizag Steel agitation.

YCP-BJP under pressure in Visakha Steel move?

2

The BJP Government at the Centre and the YCP Government in Andhra Pradesh were both facing increasing political heat on the issue of the Visakha Steel privatisation. The main allegation from the opponents is that the steel plant is being sold for abnormally low rates. There is rising criticism that the disinvestment plan has put the total value of Visakha Steel at just Rs. 4,898 Cr while its overall market value would be way higher than that.

The critics are saying that the projected values of lands have also given rise to huge suspicion on the real intentions behind the privatisation move. But these lands were stated to be unimaginably undervalued in the disinvestment plan.

Now, suspecting fingers are being pointed at the State and the Central Governments. If they were really interested in a transparent disinvestment plan, all the facts about the steel plant values should have been put before the people of Andhra Pradesh by now.

More than its financial details, the Visakha Steel has now become a political sentiment for the people of the Andhras especially in the North Andhra region. The BJP and the YCP leaders are also speaking out against the privatisation plan but they are under huge pressure to clarify doubts of the AP people.

Jagan plea to PM as Centre speeds up Visakha Steel plan

14

Heavy losses in the public sector is forcing the Central Government to hasten the disinvestments. Now, the Modi regime has set a one and half year deadline to totally privatise the Visakha Steel Plant. This is despite the rising agitation and also AP CM Jaganmohan Reddy’s letter to the Prime Minister seeking withdrawal of the privatisation plan. The Centre is moving ahead with disinvestment of Visakha Plant considering its high prospects to attract potential investors.

The steel plant property is currently of high value. It has got over 19,700 acres whose value itself would reach anywhere around Rs. 1 lakh Cr. Over 20,000 permanent employees were depending on it for their livelihoods. Thousands of others are getting indirect employment.

In his letter, Jagan Reddy told the PM that the Visakha Steel was a project that the Andhras had fought and achieved after a decade-long agitation. The steel plant has no iron ore mines of its own. If the Centre extends support in such matters, the Visakha Steel would have huge scope for better performance.

On the other hand, the Modi Government is seriously pursuing the disinvestment considering the increasing losses in the public sector steel companies. It also has plans to privatise the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) but it is put on hold temporarily.
