Exhibition sector is in a bigger trauma: Suresh Babu

0

Top producer Suresh Babu has hands of experience in cinema and he is one filmmaker who witnessed drastic changes in the industry. Speaking to a news channel, Suresh Babu said that Tollywood never faced such tough situations and he expressed his confidence in Tollywood bouncing back. Here are the highlights from his interview:

Nature created a lot of problems and everyone is aware of the crisis. I hope the financiers and banks support our producers in these tough times.

We are content creators and the exhibition of content is changing over the years. The exhibition sector is the most impacted due to coronavirus. We already requested the governments to waive off the minimum power bills for theatres and we are expected a positive response from the government.

We are social animals. Once the problem vanishes, the audience will rush to theatres for sure. This may take a year for sure or even more than that. Probably things get smoother once the vaccine and medicine for coronavirus are found.

We have to be much more efficient at work in the future. We are wasting badly. Everyone will focus more on cost-cutting and will work on strict budgets.

The theatrical experience is getting better every year and the audience will watch films on large screen for sure. Telugu industry is ready to fight down and every problem has a solution.

We have sorted out all the internal issues. All those who completed shoots will be given a chance for theatrical release first. The next bunch would follow after these. We will meet all the producers and will work collectively for better results.

Suresh Productions is in plans to produce content for OTT platforms. We have the material ready and will announce after the lockdown.

Suresh Babu about how he was mistaken as Kamal Haasan

1

With years of experience, Suresh Babu is one of the most successful Telugu producers and turned out to be a true successor for legendary producer D Ramanaidu. Suresh Babu never wanted to turn a producer during his initial days. Even his father Ramanaidu wanted him to choose a non-filmy career. Suresh Babu tested his luck in the ceramic field after he completed his studies and returned from USA. “My looks resembled the same of Kamal Haasan during our younger days. Even our cars are the same. I used to wave at the fans from my car when they try to stop me that Kamal is here. Even Bharatiraja approached me to act in one of his films, but it was a big no for acting” said Suresh Babu.

Success did not come in a day or two for Suresh Babu. He knew that he had story judging skills and made changes during story discussions. Four years after working for Suresh Productions, Suresh Babu wanted to return to USA. But it was the launch of Venkatesh as an actor which made him wait. “Though Venky had a decent launch, most of his projects during the initial days ended up as flops. Venky got the much-needed break with Bobbili Raja in the year 1990. I too decided to take up production and support Venky’s films after he got the break. I decided to continue production while Venky took up acting” said Suresh Babu.

Suresh Babu predicts the impact of coronavirus on Telugu cinema

0

Veteran producer, distributor Suresh Babu is sitting at home and is analyzing the situations and the impact of coronavirus on Telugu cinema. Suresh Babu leased out several theatres across Telugu states and he is one of the leading distributors of Telugu cinema. He says that Tollywood will take years to recover from this crisis. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in total have 1850 theatres (single screens and multiplexes). Suresh Babu predicts that they would have to remain closed for months from now.

“The theatres should remain closed for a few more months. Theatres should open months after the shootings of Telugu movies resume. Things will turn normal once a vaccine for coronavirus is found. It is then the audience will return back to theatres to watch films. Things will continue to be worse until the vaccine is found. Right from the producers to the distributors and the exhibitors, everyone will lose big due to the crisis. Lakhs of people are left unemployed and everyone should support them” said Suresh Babu. He is currently producing Venkatesh’s Naarappa and Rana’s Virata Parvam which are aimed for release this year.

Suresh Babu not in India when IT raids happened!

0

The Income Tax department has been conducting raids on Tollywood celebrities in a phased manner. Just days after conducting raids on Mythri Movie Makers, Asian Cinema and Dil Raju’s offices, the officials on Wednesday searched the offices of Suresh Babu, actor Nani, and Haarika Haasine.

Interestingly, IT officials knocked on the doors of Ramanaidu Studios when Suresh Babu was not in India. Suresh Babu recently left for an undisclosed foreign destination on personal work for 10 days. Rumor is that during the raids, officials seized key documents pertaining to ‘tax evasion’.

It is a mystery why the IT department is focusing on Tollywood bigwigs these days. What whiff they have received and what their main target is unknown.

Heights of hypocrisy : Suresh Babu’s double tongue on OTT platforms

The growing affinity towards digital streaming has turned out to be the biggest headache for Tollywood producers. There is a huge drop in the revenues of big ticket films this year compared to previous years. Despite getting good reviews and encouraging word of mouth, it has become very difficult for films to get break even in major territories. The main reason for this is the release of films in streaming channels. Audience are discerning and they are waiting for films to release in OTT platforms rather than watching in theatres. Telugu360 has already reported the impact of digital streaming and why Tollywood producers need to realise the adverse effects of selling rights to these streaming channels for the sake of recouping their investment even before the film’s final copy is out. Many producers and directors have already expressed deep concern over this affliction.

One of the leading producers D. Suresh, who also owns many theatre chains in Telugu states, has been expressing deep concern since past over streaming rights and how it is leading to closure of many theatres across the Telugu states due to lack of revenues. In his recent media interaction, Suresh Babu opined that the surge in streaming viewership is killing the revenues of films as audience are preferring to watch only one or two big ticket films in theatres and avoiding others because of the fact that they can watch them on OTT platforms. He said the slack in theatre business is worrisome for theatre owners and distributors and also a big concern for producers who are making small and medium budget films. Claiming that Telugu film revenues have registered an all time low due to steep fall in the footfalls of audience, Suresh Babu said he is worried over the fate of theatres.

Surprisingly, Suresh Babu has sold the digital rights of his upcoming film Venky Mama to Amazon prime for a good price. The film will be available in prime in less than two months of its theatrical release.

If he is so concerned over the effect of digital streaming he should stop selling the digital rights of his films and lead by example. It seems like big producers are greedy to recoup their investment by selling digital rights for hefty prices and also simultaneously expect audience to turn up in heavy numbers in theatres. If they don’t get a solid deal with these streaming rights, they keep on complaining about its consequences. This is hypocrisy at its highest level. Many industry people are surprised over Suresh Babu’s double tongue over this crucial issue.

OTT Platforms are killing theatrical business says Suresh Babu

Tollywood is going through a tough phase and like never before, the collections in November are quite low. Top producer Suresh Babu interacted with a Youtube channel during which he explained the reasons for the poor show and why theatres are witnessing the lowest numbers. He said that OTT platforms took a toll and a percentage of people stopped rushing to theatres. The economy is also quite poor admits Suresh Babu.

“A good sizeable amount of audience stopped watching films in theatres already due to the OTT platforms like Amazon and Netflix. Cinema is just becoming a weekend and holiday business. We had 3000 screens in united Andhra Pradesh and they have come down to 1750 screens. The youth are now looking for movies and content on OTT platforms. Along with this, the poor economy and bad films made things even poor. I was never been confused about films and with the dull season around, I am confused about the release date of Venky Mama. We have never released a film on Venkatesh’s birthday. We are planning to release Venky Mama on December 13th” said Suresh Babu

Suresh Babu’s dilemma continues

0

Venky Mama’s new poster is out on the occasion of the Deepavali festival. Still, there is no clarity on the movie’s release date. Venkatesh’s fans and the trade expected that producer Suresh Babu would make an official announcement about the release date on Diwali but he is continuing the suspense around it.

Egos are the main reason for this impasse.

Suresh Babu has not yet decided between the two release options – December 13 or January 11/13. Fans want it to have December 13th release as it will coincide with Venkatesh’s birthday. Moreover, competing with three big movies during the Sankranthi period doesn’t make sense. But Suresh Babu is in favor of releasing the movie for Pongal. Despite two big releases, Venkatesh had scored massive blockbuster with ‘F2’ is the argument that Suresh Babu has.

Insiders say it will take another couple of days to get clarity on Venky Mama’s release date.

0

Veteran producer Suresh Babu is releasing a bunch of small budget films after watching them in private screenings. Along with these, he has been producing several films on his prestigious Suresh Productions banner. It was Samantha who referred a Korean remake ‘Miss Granny’ and Suresh Babu loved the film. Nandini Reddy and her team worked for ample time, made several changes for the script. Titled ‘O Baby’, the film’s shoot got wrapped up in record time.

Suresh Babu happened to watch the film recently and he suggested couple of changes in the second half. The post-production work of O Baby is in final stages. Samantha, Naga Shaurya, Rao Ramesh played the lead roles in this interesting drama. O Baby will be released during the third week of June. For the next two years, it’s about processes and quality for Suresh Babu

Nagaraj Goud

Leading producer Suresh Babu’s tryst with small cinema is not just ending with June 29 dated ‘Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi’ if his next line-up of films—with Ravikanth Perepu, ‘Dorasani’ (with debutant Mahendra) and ‘C/O Kancharapalem’—are any pointers. Is this the road ahead for him? No, not really. He’d be doing tent-pole cinema too, as his immediate next would be headlined by his superstar brother Venkatesh and nephew Naga Chaitanya. It is tentatively titled as ‘Venky Mama’ and he’d be producing it along with People Media Factory. “With the aim of bringing new talent and new effective processes, I’d be associated with a lot of small cinema moving forward, albeit a different one at it,” he states as we sit down with him for a chat at Ramanaidu Studios, Hyderabad.

Process is the new mantra that he wants to chant as he believes that the industry is below par when it comes to quality. “Whether we are doing the biggest or the smallest of cinema, we’ve become a quantity industry not a quality industry. The habit of not following due processes for the betterment of any product exists in all fields, which is why we are not as great a nation as we could be. At least as far as industry goes, I want to raise the quality bar,” he lets his intentions clear, adding that some time back he met a foreigner who told him that Indian films are not accepted internationally because of poor images and sound. “He told me, ‘Your cameras and sound equipment are same to that of the world, but then you lack discipline’. Those words stayed with me.”

The Tollywood heavy hitter continues, saying that some IT organizations, Pharma companies and ISRO have followed processes and achieved world-class results. It’s time we emulate them, he feels. “It should be a conscious effort from the industry’s end that we improve our quality. With ‘Emaindi Ee Nagaraniki’, it was not the content that surprised me but the resultant ‘quality’ product that Tharun Bhascker and his young team made, in the amount that I gave them. They shot in sync sound; they did the script in advance and like-wise many other things. Yes, there were areas where they could’ve improved a bit but then I never got the people who knew the process to this degree till now.”

He admits it’s going to be a challenging couple of years ahead for Suresh Productions. “ I’ve told the teams of my upcoming production ventures, ‘let us follow a process’. Earlier, we followed experienced processes but they were not documented. We have to document them and come up with a handbook for Indian filmmakers and make it mandatory for production staff. There’s a production handbook for American cinema where they list out the all the guidelines that a production staff should follow. US works that way, whereas we follow processes at absolutely necessary places and at other places, we just don’t because we know our work gets done at the end of the day. We are coming with a film mentorship program at Ramanaidu Film School, so that the students will follow a set process from the initial stages of script development to the end of post-production,” he explains.

Suresh fondly remembers that the first man who emphasized about quality to him was the celebrated tunesmith AR Rahman who worked on the music of his 1994 cop-drama ‘Super Police’. “He kept on harping that we should excel at sound, while I conveniently ignored him. Look where he ended up,” he smiles.

He foresees that most Telugu filmmakers will be using sync sound technology henceforth. “Mumbai has started the use of sync sound. Aamir Khan shoots all of his films on sync because he realized its value. When did sync sound go off? When cameras and lights became loud and as we started shooting outdoors, right? Most English films are shot on sync sound. In fact, for four-wheeler explosion scenes too, 70 -75 per cent directors use sync. When I went to the sets of ‘Ee Nagariniki Emaindi’, I was taken aback at the discipline that was being maintained on sets. There was no murmuring and everyone was focused on the job at hand. Which is why I felt the performances turned out to be so strong. Sync sound usage will only increase in the coming days. If there are noisy surroundings, we will get better mics,” he signs off.

With Rana-starrer ‘Hiranya’, Ravikanth Perepu’s next and ‘Dorasani’, SP has its plate full

0

Nagaraj Goud

In the business for the past four decades, ace producer Suresh Babu has never been this busy. While he is presently awaiting the release of his much-talked about production venture ‘Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi,’ directed by Tharun Bhascker, he is gearing up to partner with People Media Factory for Venkatesh’s next with Bobby, ‘Venky Mama’ (tentative title). The project will have a formal launch ceremony in the next five-ten days. “We might go to sets in July-end or August. There are certain issues with Naga Chaitanya’s dates and once we have a clarity from his end, we can prepare a schedule chart,” Babu, the chief of the famed Suresh Productions, shares, going on to add that he’ll also be producing a couple of small films—Ravikanth Perepu’s next and debutant director Mahendra’s ‘Dorasani.’ “The latter is a Telangana-set love story. I’ve agreed in-principle to fund it along with another producer. Mahendra has been working on the script for the past six months.”

The association with People Media Factory is for another two-three films, Babu admits. “The point is if I have an exciting script, I’ll be asking them to listen to it and if they like it, let us jointly take it to sets. Likewise, they have the same liberty with me too. I’ve also green-lit Teja’s script but asked Anil Sunkara to come on board,” he informs, cautioning that he cannot do everything by himself and so, requires support. “Also, the industry hasn’t created enough project executives to complete a project. We have to execute ourselves, only then we will be able to train the next generation. In the process, I’ll also get taught because I’m not aware of many things.”

Citing an example, he continues, “When I worked with SS Rajamouli for ‘Eega’, I got to know a lot about visual effects. Although I did some effects for ‘Bobbili Raja’ way back, I couldn’t pursue it like the way Rajamouli has gone about it since the starting of ‘Chhatrapati’ and is continuing to do so. We are doing ‘Hiranya’ with Rana (directed by Gunasekhar). It’s a big project and it’s been 18 months since it took off—on a computer. It’s going on and on as it involves a lot of FX. We want to make it on an international level. Hollywood has cracked the process of making FX-driven films in a stipulated time. We have to learn from them, for a better industry. They too initially took three years to make such films but now they are doing them in 10 months. Financial aspects aside, I’m passionate about upping the standards as much as I can.”

Suresh Babu’s ‘Happy Cows’

0

Veteran producer Suresh Babu suffered with bad health last year after which he decided to start his own farm growing his own organic vegetables. Suresh Babu who owns a farm land across the outskirts of the city purchased 30 cows and he named his farm ‘Happy Cows’. The veteran producer proudly says that he has the best milk and ghee in the town. Though it took some time for him to learn the techniques of farming, Suresh Babu admits that he is a proud farmer now.

“I feed my cows with organic food and pure water. I am now getting the purest milk and ghee. Though I wanted to sell them for huge price, my family members laughed at me. I am not here to make money but I wanted to show the difference between the purest products and chemically injected products. I grow all the vegetables on my own through natural methods. I even want my studio to turn organic and necessary attempts are made” said Suresh Babu.

The top producer is waiting for the release of Ee Nagariniki Emaindi directed by Tharun Bhascker and the film will hit the screens on June 29th across the world.

That is Suresh Babu!

1

Out of many successful producers in Tollywood, Suresh Babu occupies a unique position for his dynamism and the entire film fraternity admires him for taking his dad D.Ramanaidu’s legacy forward. Suresh Babu is also quite clear on what he wants from a film and its crew and perfectly articulates it. Now, he has made director Teja go off the latter’s regular working style!

Suresh Babu’s has signed up dynamic director Teja for the next film with Victory Venkatesh and Teja is well known for not writing scripts well in advance. He usually goes on the flow by writing the script after hitting the sets. But Suresh Babu has insisted on Teja to work for the script for nearly a year. The similar thing happened for Rana’s Nene Raju Nene Mantri and the result was quite evident.

It is interesting to see that while many producers fall for director’s whims and fancies , only Suresh has proven time and again that he is a tough task master.

Suresh Babu press meet: Issues, Preachings and Facts

Suresh Babu recently convened a press meet. He is the presenter of the recent movie “Mental madhilo” which bagged critical acclaim but not so good collections. In this meet Suresh Babu spoke about various issues related to film industry like issues with digital service providers, satellite system and percentage system in theater exhibition.

Suresh Babu spoke about Mental Madhilo movie for which he is presenter. Despite getting good ratings, the movie did not perform up to expectations or potential. He attributed 2 reasons for that – one, Satellite and two, the title. He told, the satellite system has changed Telugu film industry completely. Initially movies used to get telecast in TV after one year or so. Now, in one month after release movie is aired on TV. So audience not willing to come to theater to watch the movie as they think they can watch the movie on TV very soon. Second reason he mentioned is the title of the movie. He told “Mental madhilo” title may be apt for the story but that could not excite audience enough to drag them towards theaters. But his argument about satellite system has a flaw. Many small movies get almost their total investments only from satellite and the channels wont pay such hefty amounts if they are not allowed to telecast the movie as early as possible after the release.

He made these comments in success meet of the movie “Mental Madhilo”. But he made some satirical comments on success meets of the movies in general. He questioned, how can some makers convene success meets on first day of the release. Such success meets should be convened after some days of successful running of the movie, he remarked.

He also talked about “Theater percentage system”. This topic has been discussed for several years and late Dasari was always vocal on this issue. He told percentage system is good for small movies but big movies prefer rental system. For example if a small movie is made in 1 Cr and it collects 4 crores, there will be a tax of approximately 1 crore and remaining 3 crores will be on percentage basis between producer and exhibitor. If it is on 60-40 (for example), producer will get 1.8 crore and exhibitor will get 1.2 crores. But if it is a medium budget movie made in 10 crore, collects 40 crores, tax will be 10 crore, producer will get 18 crore and exhibitor will get 12 crore. But big producers prefer to deal it on rental system – in which they will pay approximately 3 crores (against 12 crores in percentage system) only to exhibitors in rental system. But if same rental system applied to small films collecting 4 crores, they will also have to pay same 3 crores which is the total collection minus tax leaving them with 1 crore loss of investment. So ALWAYS small producers want percentage system and ALWAYS big producers want rental system. Theater owners want a uniform system whether rental system for all movies or percentage system for all movies. Suresh Babu says industry needs to sit and resolve this issue.

He agreed that there is no unity in the industry but he called for united action from the entire industry to resolve these issues.
