11 die in Covid centre fire at Vijayawada Swarna palace

Over eleven patients died so far in the huge fire at the Covid centre being run at the Swarna Palace Hotel in Vijayawada. The fire broke out due to a short circuit in the early hours of Sunday. There were nearly 40 patients and 10 medical staff at the time of the mishap. The death toll is expected to rise further. This Covid centre is being run by Ramesh Hospital management. Many hotels in the city were converted into Coronavirus centres and handed over to different hospitals.

Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy, Opposition leader Chandrababu Naidu, Home Minister Mekathoti Sucharita and other leaders expressed deep shock at the death of patients. Reports came out that the Covid centre staff gave wrong reports to the government that only 5 patients were taking treatment at Swarna Palace quarantine centre.

Mr. Naidu and former Minister Nara Lokesh demanded that the best medical care be provided to the injured persons. They demanded immediate compensation to the bereaved families who lost their dear ones in the fire.

Two of the eleven deceased persons were women. The injured persons were shifted to other hospitals in over 15 ambulances. Some patients even jumped from the top floors of the building after flames engulfed their rooms.

AP races to unseat TN in Covid-19 count: Why Jagan is India’s Nero

5

After surpassing Delhi and Karnataka Andhra Pradesh is now racing ahead to become the country’s second worst-hit state in terms of coronavirus infections.

In the last 24 hours, AP reported another 10,980 new Covid-19 positive cases taking the total number of cases to 2,14,145.

In an alarming trend, the state is breaking its own daily spike in casualties. In the last 24 hours, 97 covid 19 patients succumbed to the infection taking the toll to 1,939.

On Friday, AP reported 89 new COVID-19 deaths. The 97 deaths reported in the last 24 hours is the highest single-day toll reported so far.

The state has been reporting highest single-day surge in the country for nearly a month. In the last 12 days alone, AP reported more than one lakh Covid-19 positive cases.

If AP continues to report more than 10,000 Covid-19 positive cases every single day, the day is not far when the state could unseat Tamil Nadu to claim the dubious second position in the country’s highest number of infections.

Andhra Pradesh has surged past a host of the states to become the country’s third most afflicted by coronavirus. A spike in cases has seen AP leapfrog Karnataka and Delhi to take third spot in numbers of COVID-19 infections. The state with over five crore people has now officially recorded 2,14,145 cases of COVID-19, more than the Karnataka, Delhi and host of other states. But it is still some distance behind Maharashtra which has had 4,79779 confirmed cases.

With 10,980 new cases, AP’s total number of cases climbed to 2,14,145 while Tamil Naidu’s Covid-19 tally stood at
2,85,024.

The state has 85,486 active Covid-19 patients who are currently taking treatment in various hospitals. The last 24 hours, AP conducted more than 64,000 tests. So far, the state has conducted 24,24,393.

While the state administration attributes the alarming rise to heightened testing, experts blame it on the callous approach of the AP government in handling the pandemic and its failure to take the warnings seriously early on.

Jagan has consistently sought to downplay the public health risk of the burgeoning pandemic while his administration has been slow to respond to the crisis.

While experts have cautioned that corona is different from influenza and that the virus appears to be more contagious and more deadly than the flu, especially because no vaccine is available, Jagan said people should not panic about Covid-19 and should be treated like fever and common cold.

“It not as bad as the seasonal flu. It is like fever. It will go if you take proper care, wear masks, take proper diet and improve your immunity. If you take these steps, you can fight corona,” he had prescribed.

In the days that followed as the Covid-19 situation worsened, Jagan had asked people to “learn to live with the virus” and that it will not be surprising if every single is infected with the virus.

Like Roman emperor Nero, Jagan fiddled with everything else but focus on combating the pandemic.

CMs of different states moved quickly to declare states of emergency and closed schools and non-essential businesses malls, cinema halls as a precautionary measure to contain and tackle the spread of virus.

However, Jagan and his administration was busy fighting legal battles on various policies decisions including English medium on government schools, YSRCP colors on government buildings, removal of Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar as SEC, creation of three capitals among others.

Another TTD priest succumbs to Covid-19, Subba Reddy silent on suspension of darshans

1

After the former chief priest of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), Covid-19 has claimed the life of another priest.

45-year-old N V Srinivasacharylu succumbed to coronavirus at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) on Thursday after he was admitted to the hospital four days back.

Srinivasacharylu was recently deputed to Tirumala. Earlier, he was performing rituals at Sri Govindarajaswamy Temple in Tirupati. Srinivasacharylu is the second priest to have died to Covid-19.

Earlier, 75-year-old Srinivasa Murthy Deekshitulu died while undergoing treatment for Covid-19 at SVIMS.

Veeraswamy, TTD employee, also on July 25 while undergoing treatment at SVIMS hospital. The family members of the deceased TTD employee alleged lack of proper treatment at the hospital.

At least 15 archakas working at Tirumala temple tested positive for COVID-19 and were shifted to Tirupati where they were admitted to various hospitals.

TTD Pedda Jeeyar Swamy Sri Satagopa Ramanuja Pedda Jeeyangar had recently tested positive for Covid-19 and was shifted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai.

Honorary chief priest and agama advisor Ramana Dikshitulu had earlier appealed to the TTD to close the shrine to devotees for a few weeks to protect the priests.

However, TTD Trust Board chairman Y V Subba Reddy on July 16 ruled out suspension of darshans while reacting to Deekshitulu’s tweet. While the Andhra Pradesh government had reimposed complete lockdown till August 15 in Tirupati, the TTD is yet to temporarily suspend Sri Vari ‘darshans’. Tirumala was exempted from complete lockdown despite the fact that several TTD employees, priests and devotees contracted the virus.

TTD’s adamant stand in not suspending ‘darshans’ came under sharp criticism, many commented that the TTD Trust Board was more interested in filling its coffers showing little or no concern to the devotees, priests or the TTD employees. TTD Trust Board chairman and EO remained silent on the temporary suspension of ‘darshans’ despite demand from various quarters.

TTD employees Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Saturday dashed off a strong letter to Executive Officer Anil Kumar Singhal demanding insurance to Covid-19 patients and compensation to those who succumbed to the infection.

In the letter, the TTD employees JAC pointed out that at least 250 staffers contracted the virus and all those who were infected should be given insurance protection. Further, the TTD employees JAC demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation to all the employees who succumbed to the infection

1

Popular comedian Balireddy Prudhviraj is reportedly in a critical condition. He was admitted to a hospital due to severe fever for the last 10 days. Although he was tested negative for Covid-19, the actor was advised by the doctors to remain in isolation for 15 days.

Prudhviraj acted in over 100 movies. His dialogues “30 Years Industry”, in Krishna Vamsi’s Khadgam and ‘Boiling star Babloo’ in Loukyam have brought him immense recognition and fame.

AP inching closer to TN: 1,66,586 total Covid-19 cases

9

Andhra Pradesh continued to witness an alarming increase in coronavirus cases. The state reported 7,822 new COVID-19 cases, taking the cumulative count in the state to 1,66,586. Apart from the infections, some 63 new deaths due to COVID-19 were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the state-wide death toll to 1,537.

Coronavirus cases in the state have swelled for four straight weeks, having recorded 8-000-10,000 fresh cases every day. Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the worst-affected state by coronavirus in the country only after Maharashtra (4.4 lakh) and Tamil Nadu (2,63,222). In the last two weeks, Andhra Pradesh has toppled Karnataka and Delhi to claim the dubious third place in the country’s Covid-19 ranking.

Andhra Pradesh not only broke its own single-day spike but overshadowed records set by other states. With more than 60,000 cases reported in just one week, Andhra Pradesh had already unseated Delhi to clinch the dubious third spot in the country’s Covid-19 tally.

On July 1, the state had reported 15,252 COVID-19 cases. By July 30, this number had climbed to 1,30,557 cases. Of these, 60,000 cases were reported in seven days. Last Friday, Andhra Pradesh recorded the highest single-day spike of 10,376 coronavirus cases, 10,167 cases on Thursday and 10,093 cases a day before.

The pace at which the cases are rising in the state, it won’t be surprising if AP will unseat Tamil Nadu to claim the dubious rank of the second worst-hit pandemic state in the country though the margin of 1 lakh cases seems wide.

Experts attributed the recent surge to increased testing and widespread transmission of the disease. Further, the experts also blamed relaxations of lockdown measures which had resulted in people gathering in crowds, no longer heeding to guidelines such as maintaining physical distance or wearing face masks.

The Andhra Pradesh government had lifted all curbs on inter-state and intra-state travel, and commercial activity in the state moved towards ‘normalcy’. The increase in COVID-19 cases has happened during this time. Many blamed Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy for his “learn to live with the virus” policy rather taking stringent measures to combat the pandemic.

For the fifth straight week, Andhra Pradesh also witnessed a record spike in the death toll due to the viral infection. In the last 24 hours, AP reported 63 deaths taking the number of fatalities to 1537.

The state has 76,377 known active cases and 88,672 discharged after recovery. Andhra Pradesh’s infection positivity rate increased to 7.22 per cent. Among the states with over 20,000 cases, it has the second-worst recovery ratio of 45.3 per cent. Only Karnataka outranks AP with a ratio of around 40 per cent.

Former minister Manikyala Rao succumbs to Covid-19

1

Former endowments minister and BJP leader P Manikyala Rao on Saturday succumbed to Covid-19. He was 60.

On July 4, Manikyala Rao posted a video to announce that he had contracted the virus from one of his friends. Subsequently, Rao underwent tests and test results showed he was positive for Covid-19.

For nearly a month, Manikyala Rao was in home isolation at his Tadepalligudem residence. He was later shifted to a hospital in Vijayawada and put on a ventilator as his medical health condition deteriorated.

Manikyala Rao served as endowments minister for four years during the TDP regime between 2014-2018 when the Chandrababu Naidu led party had an alliance with the BJP. Rao quit as minister after the TDP pulled out of the NDA and severed ties with the BJP. He later joined the BJP and was elected as MLA from Tadepalligudem. As a matter of fact, Rao was one of the key contenders for the post of Andhra Pradesh BJP president. He belongs to the dominant Kapu community.

Newly appointed BJP president Somu Veerraju, MP Sujana Chowdhary and several party leaders expressed their condolences at the demise their colleague Manikyala Rao.

That AP will breach Delhi’s caseload is a given, but the pace at which the cases are rising in the state, it won’t be surprising if AP will unseat Tamil Nadu to claim the rank of the second worst-hit pandemic state in the country sooner than later.

For the fourth straight week, Andhra Pradesh also witnessed a record spike in the death toll due to the viral infection. In the last 24 hours, the state has reported 68 deaths taking the tally to 1,281. East Godavari and Guntur recorded nine deaths each while Anatapur, Kurnool and Visakhapatnam reported eight deaths each, Chittoor and Kadapa registered six deaths each, Prakasam (4), Vizianagaram (4), Krishna (3), Nellore (1), Srikakulam (1) and West Godavari (1).

The growing number of fatalities is a cause for serious concern even as Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy remarked that “we have to learn to live with the virus and that every single person will be infected.” His remarks came under sharp criticism from his own party MP Raghurama Krishna Raju who advised him to desist from making such statements as it would erode the public confidence in the government.

East Godavari continued to be the hotspot in Andhra Pradesh reporting the highest number of infections in the state. In the last 24 hours, the district reported 1,441 positive cases followed by Kurnool (1,251).

AP tops country’s single-day spike with 10,000 cases, 65 deaths

1

Andhra Pradesh recorded over 10,000 new COVID-19 cases in a day for the first time, taking the tally to 1,20,390 while the death toll rose to 1,213 with a record single-day spike of 65 fatalities, according to the state health bulletin.

The state has registered 10,093 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours till. Andhra Pradesh had recently gone past Karnataka in terms of coronavirus cases to become the fourth worst-hit state. This is the highest single-day spike witnessed by any state in the country. On Tuesday, Maharashtra reported 7,717 in the last 24 hours, taking its tally to 3,91,440.

Andhra Pradesh had been steadily reporting anywhere between 6,000-,8,000 cases. However, this is the first time the state reported more than 10,000 Covid-19 positive cases.

For the third straight week, Andhra Pradesh also witnessed a record spike in the death toll due to the viral infection. In the last 24 hours, the state has reported 65 deaths taking the tally to 1,213.

With AP caseload rapidly on the rise, the state is not far from unseating Delhi to take the dubious third place with only a narrow margin of 10,000 cases. It is only a matter of a day or two when AP will be the third worst-hit state in the country. While Delhi and Mumbai’s recoveries have been quite remarkable, the same cannot be said of AP which is exhibiting worrying COVID-19 trends.

AP emerged as the fastest state with its Covid cases rising from 50,000 to 1 lakh in just 7 days. Maharashtra took 19 days, Tamil Nadu 16 days, Delhi 18 days and Karnataka 11 days. By the time AP crossed 1 lakh mark, it conducted 16.4 lakh tests, Maharashtra 6.2 lakh tests, Tamil Nadu 12.7 lakh, Delhi 6.4 lakh and Karnataka 12 lakh. Tamil Nadu was not giving priority to antigen tests. It is not yet clear whether AP was relying on RT PCR tests or trunat tests.

In the state, East Godavari continued to report the highest single-day spikes. In the last 24 hours, the district has reported 1,676, Anantapur (1,371), Guntur (1,124), Kurnool (1,091), Visakhapatnam (841), Chittoor (734), Nellore (608), Srikakulam (496), Krishna (259), Prakasam (242), Vizianagaram (53).

AP in 2nd place in active Covid cases due to YCP failures, says Naidu

2

Former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has expressed concern that as on now, Andhra Pradesh was standing in second place in Coronavirus active cases next only to the worst affected state of Maharashtra. The reason for the unexpected and unchecked rise in virus cases in AP was the criminal negligence of the ruling YSRCP leaders while in Maharashtra, they were facing bigger challenges from international traffic, metropolitan city, etc.

The TDP chief commended his party leaders and workers for taking active part in the week-long ‘Samara Bheri’ agitation in protest against the Jaganmohan Reddy government’s failures to control the epidemic. At a time when the ruling party leaders should have focused all their energies to prevent epidemic spread, they were filing false cases against TDP leaders to derive sadistic pleasure. Now, the daily rise in Covid cases in AP has risen to 14 per cent alarmingly. The state has also come to stand in 4th place in virus deaths.

Mr. Naidu asserted that it was not just enough to say that people should coexist with Coronavirus but the Chief Minister should help create awareness. On its part, the TDP was conducting webinars with doctors, experts and intellectuals regularly through the Global Forum for Sustainable Transformation (GFST). Reports with recommendations to contain the virus were being submitted to the Central government. While US President Donald Trump was wearing a mask, AP CM Jagan Reddy was still not wearing one.

Mr. Naidu condemned the growing atrocities being carried out against the Dalits all over the state. The government boasted of bringing the Disha Act as a tougher Act than even Nirbhaya but both Acts were not applied in the minor Dalit girl’s gang-rape case in Rajahmundry. It was the TDP which extended Rs. 2 lakh to support the girl’s family and also another Rs. 2 lakh to the Dalit victim of tonsure case. In the past 14 months of YSRCP rule, over 100 atrocities have been committed against Dalits in which the guilty persons escaped without any punishment.

The TDP chief said that telemedicine was giving better results in helping people in Covid time but the AP government was ignoring this. The ruling party has also neglected to use Real Time Government which would have greatly helped in containing the infections.

Several TDP leaders told Mr. Naidu that the poor people were unable to pay treatment charges for Covid as Rs. 10,000 was needed for the tests. The actual treatment for the virus was running into Rs. 2 lakh to Rs. 3 lakh. In some cases, the treatment costs were even more. While the general public were facing untold hardships to receive treatment in the State, the ruling party leaders were going to Hyderabad for better treatment.

The Opposition leaders complained that the government was extending sale hours at liquor shops for more revenue but at the same time putting problems to ordinary shop owners with heavy penalties for selling products beyond permitted hours. These fines were crossing Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000. Covid patients were not getting proper treatment anywhere in the State. Even the test results were also faulty. The discharged patients were being given just Rs. 100 or Rs. 50 but not Rs. 2,000 as promised by the government.

AP all set to beat Delhi in Covid-19 infections

2

Andhra Pradesh has become the hotbed of the coronavirus spread in the country where the number of cases has breached the grim milestone of one lakh mark while the death toll has crossed the 1,000-mark as well.

In the last 24 hours, the state has reported 7,948 infections taking the total number of cases to a whopping 1,10,297. During the same period. 56 Covid-19 patients succumbed to the deadly infection.

A total of 1,148 Covid-19 patients have succumbed to the virus so far, and the fatality rate is growing each day. Andhra Pradesh currently is the fourth worst-hit state by the pandemic after toppling Karnataka to claim the dubious ranking.

The state has the fourth-highest number of Covid-19 positive cases at 1,10,297 cases and racing ahead to unseat Delhi to clinch the dubious third position in the country’s Corona ranking.

In the last three weeks, Andhra Pradesh has emerged as one of the biggest Covid-19 hotspots in the country. With 1,10,297 positive cases, Andhra Pradesh had joined the big ‘1 lakh club’. The state is currently behind Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Delhi. While Maharashtra logged over 3,83,7233 lakh Covid-19 positive cases, followed by Tamil Nadu with more than 2.20 lakh coronavirus cases. With AP caseload rapidly on the rise, the state is not far from unseating Delhi which has over 1.31 lakh Covid-19 cases.

On March 12, Andhra Pradesh reported the first positive case of corona. A man who returned from Italy to Nellore tested positive for the virus. 73 positive cases in India.

On March 15, Jagan Mohan Reddy brushed aside the grave threat of pandemic outbreak in the state stating that “A scare is being created, when there is no panic situation. Covid-19 can be harmful in cases of people above 60 years of age, with diabetes, blood pressure, asthma like conditions. This is a kind of virus that comes and goes. 80% of the people who are healthy are not affected by the disease – it comes and it goes. It may be cured by medication and that medication is paracetamol. The virus is spreading from South Korea. In case anybody coming from foreign countries is found suffering from cough, cold and fever, bleaching powder should be sprayed on their belongings and things they use.”

On April 25, the total number of Covid-19 cases touched 1,016 with 61 more tested positive. Jagan was in ‘don’t press the panic’ button mode. In all these days, YSRCP leaders believed Covid-19 was a TDP hoax and that the virus was the evil creation of Naidu to postpone elections to civic bodies.

Jagan’s press briefings were a circus-like spectacle from his statements early on that paracetamol and bleaching powder can keep corona at bay. After the virus is like common cold and fever that “comes and goes”, Jagan had stated that it “comes but does not go”. It surely doesn’t seem to.

On May 25, AP reported more than 3,000 cases with 56. By June 25, the number of Covid-19 positive cases and fatalities more than doubled to 10,884 and 136 respectively. By July 25, the cases had galloped by more than seven times to 80,858. In other words, in nearly a month period, the state reported 70,000 Covid-19 cases. The fatalities too soared to 933 on July 25 from 136 on June 25. In other words, the number of deaths saw a significant jump of more than 842 cases in just 26 days.

The virus affected the frontline warriors with no medical equipment such as PPEs, N95 masks and gloves, but the government claimed there were enough supplies. Instead of addressing shortage of medical supplies, the Jagan government blamed everyone else but itself.

In Southern States, Andhra Pradesh has continued to drive India’s novel Coronavirus numbers which have been touching new highs every day for the last one week hovering around 6,000-8,000 cases. As the state had remained the biggest contributor of Covid-19 cases for the last three weeks beating states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Telangana in the South in single-day spikes, Jagan had recently stated that none will be spared by Covid-19.

“Every single person can contract the infection. No one can stop the spread of the virus. We have to live with it,” Jagan had said. With the Chief Minister’s statement, the public confidence in the government has eroded coming as it does at a time when the onus of infusing confidence lies largely on the political dispensations.

Covid-19 patients dying due to lack of oxygen: HC pulls up CS

Telangana Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar has finally appeared before the High Court on Tuesday to give the government’s explanation on the Covid-19 situation and measures being initiated in the combat against the pandemic.

The Telangana High Court expressed displeasure over the state government for not implementing its directions in handling the COVID-19 crisis.

Hearing a batch of petitions filed by Professor P L Vishweshwar Rao and others on the number of coronavirus tests being conducted in the state, medical infrastructure and release of health bulletins, the High Court asked the chief secretary on why the government was not testing enough.

The court lambasted the state’s healthcare system and hit out at chief secretary and health Secretary asking whether both knew patients were dying due to lack of oxygen facilities at various hospitals. “Is the state government even aware of the hard fact that patients at the hospitals are dying because of lack of oxygen facilities? How does the government prepare itself to tackle this problem of oxygen facilities? At least 38 Covid-19 patients died due to lack of oxygen facilities?”It is distressing to know that patients admitted the hospitals are dying due to lack of oxygen facilities, which indicates a complete lack of critical care,” observed the court.

The court expressed anguish over the alarming rise in Corona positive cases in the state and fatalities, even in remote parts of Telangana. The court questioned the CS the measures being initiated in rural hinterlands of the state to combat the pandemic. “The positive cases are on an alarming rise. What measures have been initiated by the state government to contain and prevent the spread of the virus,” the court fumed at the Chief Secretary and the Health Secretary.

The court questioned why the government was not providing all details in the COVID-19 cases daily bulletin. “We intend to know why the government has failed to implement our orders. Why complete information is not being released in health bulletins,” the court questioned the Chief Secretary. Further, the court questioned why action should not be taken over non-compliance of its earlier directions.

The court expressed dissatisfaction over a report filed by the state government on COVID-19 tests being conducted in the state. Further, the two-bench judges comprising Chief Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan and Justice B Vijaysen Reddy, questioned why the government was not testing enough compared to other states and directed the Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report on the same. The court also sought to know why detailed information with regard to coronavirus cases being put out by the government was not being made available to the public. The court also sought to know from the CS if Covid-19 tests were being conducted in Gandhi Hospital.

Further, the court also asked why the government was not releasing daily health bulletins despite orders to the government to do so. On his part, the Chief Secretary informed the High Court that the state government has conducted 3.5 lakh tests as per the ICMR guidelines. The Chief Secretary also told the court that the government had declared 1,085 containment zones in Hyderabad.
