Imran Khan Jail Time in Toshakhana Case: Background and Consequences

0

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been taken into custody in Lahore following a three-year prison sentence issued by a trial court in the Toshakhana case. Details of this case and the implications of this political development are as follows.

What is Toshakhana case?

Toshakhana, managed by the Cabinet Division, was established in 1974 during Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s leadership to collect and store gifts given to prominent figures like parliament members, ministers, the President, and the Prime Minister. The Toshakhana case revolves around the allegation that details of these gifts were not disclosed in annual reports submitted by Imran Khan and his party to the Election Commission of Pakistan.

This issue was raised by members of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (a rival political party of Imran’s party) in 2022. They complained that Imran Khan illegally sold state gifts worth more than 14 crore Pakistani rupees during his tenure from 2018 to 2022. These gifts include the gifts he received from foreign dignitaries and royal families. The gifts included expensive watches and other costly articles. As per the complaint, these gifts were sold by Imran’s aides in Dubai.

Election Commission verdict in 2022:

The Election Commission investigated the matter and delivered its verdict in October 2022. As per this verdict, Imran Khan is found guilty by Pakistan Election Commission and so he is barred from holding public office for five years. This verdict is considered a landmark verdict in Pakistan. Election Commission also sent the references to the trial court requesting it to begin criminal proceedings.

Today’s verdict by sessions court.

Today Islamabad district and sessions court, which is handling criminal proceedings of the case, found Imran Khan guilty and given three years of prison sentence. Court also imposed 1 lakh rupees fine. Following the verdict, Imran Khan was taken into custody from his Lahore residence by the police. His political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has filed an appeal with Pakistan’s Supreme Court regarding the district court’s decision. Khan, however, insists on his innocence and claims that the charges against him are politically motivated.

Political consequences of this verdict:

The former cricket legend’s future political career is now uncertain due to this verdict. He is 70 years old now. Legal experts speculate that this conviction could potentially affect his eligibility to participate in the upcoming national elections scheduled for early November. The situation has garnered significant attention due to its potential implications for Khan’s political journey. His party’s decision to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court introduces further complexity to this legal dispute, which holds the potential to shape Pakistan’s political landscape.

Indian govt’s ‘fascist tactics’ in Kashmir will fail: Imran

0

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said that the Indian government’s “fascist tactics” in Kashmir will “fail miserably” to smother the Kashmiri freedom struggle.

The cricketer-turned-politician, in a series of tweets, warned the Indian government that “no force can stop” a nation from achieving its goals when unity is achieved in a freedom struggle and death is not feared.

Tensions have escalated between the two neighbours following India’s decision to revoke Article 370 of its Constitution which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

“The fascist, Hindu supremacist (Narendra) Modi government should know that while armies, militants and terrorists can be defeated by superior forces; history tells us that when a nation unites in a freedom struggle and does not fear death, no force can stop it from achieving its goal.

“That is why the Hindutva exclusivist creed of the Modi-led government with its fascist tactics in Indian-occupied Kashmir will fail miserably in its attempt to smother the Kashmiri liberation struggle,” he added.

On Wednesday, Khan celebrated Pakistan’s Independence Day in “Azad Jammu and Kashmir” (AJK) to express “solidarity with the Kashmiris”, while India’s Independence Day on Thursday was observed as “Black Day” in Pakistan.

Addressing a special session of the AJK Legislative Assembly in Muzaffarabad, Khan had said the Pakistan Army “is battle-hardened and it is fully ready to respond to any violation by India”.

China stands by Pakistan on Kashmir

China has “reassured Pakistan of it’s support and commitment” and announced that it supported Islamabad’s decision to approach the UN Security Council in the wake of India’s decision to revoke Article 370 of its Constitution that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, media reports said on Saturday.

An official statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry after a meeting between visiting Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi here on Friday said that Beijing was seriously concerned about the latest escalation of tensions in Kashmir, The Express Tribune reported.

Qureshi, who arrived in the Chinese capital early Friday to hold consultations in the wake of India revoking special status of Jammu and Kashmir earlier this week, apprised officials in Beijing about Pakistan’s concerns and reservations.

“The Kashmir issue is a dispute left from the colonial history. It should be properly and peacefully resolved based on the UN Charter, relevant UN Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreement,” the statement quoted Wang as saying.

“China believes that unilateral actions that will complicate the situation should not be taken.”

Wang stressed that as all-weather strategic cooperative partners, China and Pakistan have understood and supported each other on issues concerning “our respective core interests”.

In a series of Twitter posts, Foreign Minister Qureshi said he thanked his Chinese counterpart for a meeting on a short notice.

“Today I had a strong and conclusive meeting with State Counsellor and Foreign Minister of China, Wang Yi. Pakistan shares a bond of brotherhood with China as further evidenced in the meeting today where China reassured Pakistan of it’s support and commitment.

“China supports Pakistan’s repeated calls for peace and stability and we will work together to highlight the voice of Kashmiris to the world.”

Qureshi added that China was Pakistan’s friend that has long been trusted, and that friendship between the two nations was rock solid. He believed that China would stand up for justice on the Kashmir issue, reports The Express Tribune.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying on Friday called on India and Pakistan to resolve their disputes through dialogue and negotiations and jointly uphold peace and stability in the region.

Regarding Pakistan’s decision to downgrade diplomatic relations and suspension of trade with India, she said that Beijing noted relevant statement by Pakistan.

“The pressing priority is that the relevant party should stop unilaterally changing the status quo and avoid escalation of tension.”

Pakistan ‘permanently discontinues’ Samjhauta Express

Pakistan on Thursday announced that it is permanently discontinuing the Samjhauta Express train service with India following New Delhi’s revocation of special status for Jammu and Kashmir.

The decision was announced by Pakistan’s Railway Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed at a press conference.

He said that the bogies of the Samjhauta Express will now be used for passengers travelling on the occasion of Eid. “This will increase the capacity of Eid trains and more people will be able to travel in them.”

The Samjhauta Express ran twice a week from Lahore to Attari via the Wagah railway station.

People who have bought tickets for the Samjhauta Express will be reimbursed. “You can collect the payment from Lahore’s divisional superintendent office,” said the Minister.

“We don’t want war but we can’t sit quietly over Indian atrocities in Kashmir… Srinagar is not Jerusalem,” he added.

The train service was suspended earlier this year after military tensions escalated between the two neighbours following the Pulwama attack and Balakot strike.

Pakistani fans clean Edgbaston stands post New Zealand win

0

Ahead of the Australia game in the ongoing World Cup, Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed had spoken about how much Pakistani fans are passionate about cricket and how much they support the team and the players.

After Pakistan’s loss to India, Pakistani fans had slammed the team for their poor performance against the arch-rivals. They had questioned the players’ fitness and even their commitment towards the sport.

However, once Sarfaraz and his boys returned to winning ways by registering wins against South Africa and New Zealand, the same fans showered praise on the team for their remarkable return in the tournament.

While many Pakistani have been trolled for their reactions after the India game and memes were created on them, many of the supporters also garnered appreciation for showing sportsman spirit.

Now, a video is making rounds on the internet in which some of the Pakistani fans can be seen cleaning the stands at Edgbaston where the Green Brigade defeated the Black Caps by six wickets on Wednesday.

Several Pakistani fans stayed back after the match and were seen collecting the trash from the stands, thus setting an example for the ones who litter.

Pakistan, with seven points from as many games, need to win their remaining two games against Afghanistan and Bangladesh in order to make it to the semifinals. They would also require the results of matches of other teams to go in their favour if they have to enter the knockout stage.

Pakistan summons US ambassador over Trump tweet, registers protest

Pakistan summons US ambassador over Trump tweet

The Pakistan Foreign Office summoned US Ambassador to Pakistan David Hale on Monday night and lodged its protest against US President Donald Trump’s tweet wherein he accused Pakistan of “lies and deceit”, the media reported.

The US Embassy confirmed that Ambassador Hale was summoned by the Foreign Office at 9 p.m., The Express Tribune reported citing Express News.

Informed sources said Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua sought an explanation from the ambassador over the US President’s tweet.

Earlier, Trump tweeted that the US ‘foolishly’ gave aid to Pakistan over the course of 15 years but Islamabad remained deceitful by providing safe havens to ‘terrorists’ from Afghanistan.

“The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies and deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!,” Trump said in his tweet.

In May 2016, Pakistan had summoned the US ambassador to express its reservations over a drone strike inside its territory that reportedly killed Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansoor.

Trump’s announcement follows an increasingly tense back-and-forth between Washington and Islamabad after the US President unveiled his administration’s National Security Strategy.

He had then reminded Pakistan about its obligation towards helping the US because it got “massive payments” from Washington every year.

“We have made it clear to Pakistan that while we desire continued partnership, we must see decisive action against terrorist groups operating on their territory,” Trump had said. “They have to help.”

Pakistan is also accused by Afghanistan and India of harbouring terrorists ranged against the two countries.

Islamabad routinely denies such charges.

How will Trump’s India card play in the Afghan great game?

0

United States President Donald Trump has played the India card against Pakistan in the Afghan great game, but would that become a true trump card for India?

Earlier this week, Trump assigned a “critical” role for India in his country’s South Asia strategy for fighting terrorism, building up a safe Afghanistan and appealed for help, while at the same time warning Pakistan of repercussions for the double game of unleashing terrorists against the Afghans and the US while collecting billions from Washington.

It amounts to threatening Islamabad that Washington could pivot to India if it didn’t stop supporting “the same organisations that try every single day to kill our people”, as Trump put it.

The US move comes as the civilian leadership is unmoored after Nawaz Sharif was removed as Pakistan Prime Minister by a court order.

It also coincides with the simmering military standoff between India and China, the other power with deep involvement in the region and patron of Pakistan. How Beijing reacts would be a factor in the way things work out for India.

There are two other players in the great game, Iran and Russia, with whom the US has a hostile relationship. They can influence developments in Afghanistan and India can play a covert intermediary role between them.

Past US Presidents, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, have in joint statements acknowledged New Delhi’s humanitarian and development assistance to Afghanistan, but what makes Trump’s statement different is that he openly incorporates India into the US strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia and juxtaposes it with his warnings to Pakistan.

Trump putting Pakistan on notice directly marks a change from the tradition of the Cold War that made Pakistan the indisputable and indispensable ally and there is a twist of irony here.

Soon after 9/11 in 2001, as the US prepared to go into Afghanistan, India offered the use of its airbases, but it was turned down and Washington decided to go with Pakistan despite its history of aiding both the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

Trump’s request to India was deliberately open-ended, while stressing what is already being done. “We want them to help us more with Afghanistan, especially in the area of economic assistance and development,” he said.

New Delhi has committed more than $3 billion in aid to Kabul and has undertaken important projects like constructing a Parliament house and building major highways in the face of Taliban attacks.

And there limits to what more it can do.

India couldn’t send troops in combat or frontline advisory roles. But it already trains Afghan troops and police in India — and had one time set a target of putting 30,000 of them through the paces. Now, trainers could work in Afghanistan itself, if India chooses and the US agrees to drop its opposition driven by Pakistani sensibilities — but away from areas of direct conflict.

But it could let the US use airbases in India, though Islamabad could ban overflights and a route through Iran is out of question.

India has provided military helicopters to Afghanistan, and General John Nicholson, the US commander in that country, has recently said that Kabul could do with more of them — as well as other military supplies. New Delhi could also increase its role as middleman for supplying Russian weaponry and spares given the Washington-Moscow standoff.

In the development sphere, India could increase — and probably will — its aid to Afghanistan in cash and kind. However, it may not be able to sustain a major expansion of assistance programmes requiring the deployment of Indian citizens because that would likely require security personnel to protect them and risk direct confrontation.

A major component of India’s economic assistance to Afghanistan runs counter to US interests as dictated by the Middle East because it is linked to Iran. India is developing the Chhabahar port in Iran that will provide landlocked Afghanistan an outlet to the world using the Indian-built Delaram-Zaranj highway to the Iran border. In turn, that highway will link to the Ring Road project that connects important Afghan cities.

This will provide a significant boost to Afghanistan’s economy.

At the same time, dire strategic compulsions could make the US overcome its repugnance to Tehran and through India use the Chhabahar link to get supplies into Afghanistan.

What is behind the changed US attitude to Islamabad — and to India as a collateral — and Trump’s own reluctance to further get involved in Afghanistan? It is the influence of the triumvirate of generals, Chief of State John Kelly, Defence Secretary James Mattis and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, with personal connections to the Afghan war.

Kelly lost his son, a Marine officer in Afghanistan to a terrorist roadside bomb, making the war on the Taliban personal. Mattis was the commander of the CENTCOM that oversaw the Afghan war and McMaster as the deputy to the planning commander at the international forces headquarters in Kabul.

Both have seen Islambad’s double game. Already last month, the US withheld $50 million in aid Pakistan citing its failure to rein in the Haqqani terrorist network.

Add to that Trump’s disenchantment with China over its refusal or inability to rein in North Korean taunts and threats.

How will the military and Islamist establishments react? To acquiesce to the US is one option that may be accompanied by the diversion of Islamist terrorists to India.

The other option of defiance would depend on China. Beijing sees Washington-New Delhi ties in the larger picture — its state media has accused the West, specifically the US, of instigating war between it and India.

But Beijing has some limitations here. Beyond making up for the loss of US billions to Pakistan if Islamabad stood firm, China also has strategic interests in the region that could be endangered by terrorism: The One Road One Belt project and the likelihood of terrorism getting a boost in the Uighar region and in Central Asia.

The real danger would be a Pakistani terror push towards India with Chinese backing.

Sushma Swaraj comes to aid of Pakistani boy with heart ailment

0

A four-month-old Pakistani boy suffering from a serious heart ailment will get a fresh lease of life as External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj offered him a medical visa on humanitarian grounds.

Rohaan, a resident of Lahore, has a hole in his heart and would now get treatment at Noida’s Jaypee Hospital.

Due to the tensions between India and Pakistan, Rohaan’s parents were unable to get a medical visa for their child’s treatment even though his condition was critical.

Rohaan’s father Kanwal Saadik finally sought help from Sushma Swaraj on Twitter informing her about the critical condition of his son.

The Minister tweeted back assuring him that his child would not suffer because of any political issue and that they would get the medical visa for his treatment in India.

“The child will not suffer. Please contact Indian High Commission in Pakistan. We will give the medical visa,” she replied.

Rohaan finally got the visa and would now come for his treatment via Wagha border on Monday.

Jaypee Hospital CEO Manoj Luthra said: “Keeping aside the tensions between the two countries, the minister did a noble act of thinking about the child’s health. We welcome the baby and family and are pleased to know that with our expert doctors and world class services that we provide, we are able to build trust for us in people across nations.”

The boy will first be treated by paediatric cardiologist Ashutosh Marwah and later will undergo a heart surgery conducted by paediatric cardiac surgeon Rajesh Sharma, a statement said.

Government says ‘No’ to bilateral cricket with Pakistan

Sports Minister Vijay Goel on Monday made it clear that the government will not allow any bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan till the time “cross-border terrorism” does not stop.

The minister’s firm statement comes on a day the BCCI and the Pakistan Cricket Board are meeting in Dubai to discuss their bilateral ties, which have remained suspended since 2012 due to diplomatic tensions after terror attacks in India.

“BCCI should speak to the government before giving any proposal to Pakistan. I have made it clear that bilateral cricket with Pakistan is not possible till the time there is cross-border terror. We have, however, no say on multilateral events (ICC tournaments),” Goel told reporters here.

The PCB has already sent a legal notice to BCCI claiming damages in tune of USD 60 million (Rs 387 crore approx) for allegedly not honouring the MoU that had stated five bilateral series in the cycle between 2015-2023.

It is learnt that the BCCI officials led by joint secretary Amitabh Chaudhary will explain to their PCB counterparts that the series can’t be held without government permission and would also request them to withdraw the case.

If Pakistan refuses to budge, it is learnt that now way will BCCI pay any compensation in this case.

The cash-strapped PCB’s finances heavily depend on a series with India which would mean a financial windfall for the nation, where no international cricketing activity has taken place since the terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricket team.

Asad Questions the Wisdom in Memon’s Death Penalty

0

Asadudddin Owaisi, Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) MP from Hyderabad, questioned the wisdom in awarding capital punishment to Yakub Memon on charges that he conspired the 1993 Mumbai blasts.

The MP felt there should some leniency towards a person who surrendered to the police. He said Memon was not arrested.

He took his opposition to the Yakub Memon’s death penalty to social media and asked why Memon should be hanged when he proved the involvement of Pakistan hand in the 1993 Mumbai blasts which killed 257 injuring 700.

He termed the demolition of Babri Masjid as an “original sin” and responsible for these blasts.

Owaisi sought to know if the government was planning to bring the conspirators of the demolition of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya, that triggered clashes across the country, to book and award death penalty.
