Laziness doesn’t work in the film business, say ‘K.G.F.’, ‘Kantara’ makers

    0

The ‘K.G.F.’ franchise and ‘Kantara’ are two projects that have emerged as the breakout films on the Indian cinematic landscape.

‘K.G.F. Chapter 1’, which was released in 2018, opened up a new market for films from down south, more so for films from Karnataka. The state had earlier delivered top-rated films from directors such as Girish Kasaravalli, it was ‘K.G.F.’ that re-introduced Kannada cinema to a new generation of cinema goers and also tasted widespread commercial success.

‘Kantara’ which was released earlier this year in September, furthered the pan-India grip of Kannada cinema. While at surface level, these stories may look like breakout successes, scratching the surface a bit will reveal that the reason behind the success of these stories are their rootedness, a philosophy that the makers of both these movies, Hombale Films, stand by.

Vijay Kiragandur and Chaluve Gowda, the founders of Hombale films have “always prioritised the content” over anything, they told IANS.

“For a story to go truly global, it is imperative for it to stay rooted, be honest with the audience,” they shared.

“The story, the script and the characters — these are the foundations of any film and once you get that right, everything follows and everything falls in place. But if the script is not strong, the foundation is weak then the whole film falters,” Chaluve said.

While film production may be about investing money and taking up right choices, it is also about the correct investment of time. “Our major investment is in the form of time and we are very generous with investing time at the scripting level compared to the filming,” Vijay expressed.

Obviously, the more you sweat during practice, the less you bleed during the war.

While the production house has clocked a decade in film business, like everyone it too faced the heat from the lockdown induced by the pandemic, it was a difficult phase because majority of their films are suited for theatres and experience which can’t be replicated on OTT platforms.

The makers noted: “Covid-19 has changed a lot of things for the film industry, it has catalysed the unification of Indian cinema because during lockdown, people were watching films from across regional film industries of India on OTT platforms.

“Storytellers will have to deliver something new to the audience. Lethargy and laziness won’t work in the film business now,” they added.

As Walter White said in ‘Breaking Bad’, they “Are Goddamn Right!” because Covid-19 has beaten redundancy to the pulp and discarded it into the dumpster.

Sharing an update on the status of their most anticipated film ‘Salaar’, the producers said: “80-85 per cent of ‘Salaar’ has been completed, only the climax remains to be shot. We had already announced the release date of September 28, 2023 and we are sure that we will release the film on time.”

Vijay believes cinema will always be a force of change: “It serves as a powerful medium through which social messages can be delivered in an effective manner.

“Take for instance ‘Kantara’, the ‘Buta Kola’ sequence is something that now everyone in the world knows about. We want to convey a good message, be it cultural or traditional and also contribute to the economy through stories.”

As for the projects in the pipeline, the makers have a loaded slate in the form of ‘Dhoomam’ – which features Fahadh Faasil and Aparna Balamurali, they have ‘Raghu Thatha’ in Tamil starring Keerthy Suresh, ‘Bagheera’ written by ‘K.G.F.’ helmer Prashanth Neel, and also ‘Tyson’ with Prithviraj Sukumaran.

Sequel buzz minting Gold in Telugu Cinema

    1

It is the season of sequels. SS Rajamouli brought it back with Baahubali franchise. After the first installment ended up as a hit, the budget was revised and the second part fared extremely well. The trend continued with several films like KGF in the recent times. KGF: Chapter 2 is a humongous hit and the success of prequel is sure an advantage though the content is the deciding factor. Nani decided to make HIT into a franchise and HIT 2 recovered the investment in its first weekend itself. Sukumar and Allu Arjun felt that the story of Pushpa should be told in two parts. The budget limitations too made the makers to rethink and they opted out with two parts. The second part of Pushpa will be bigger in terms of budgets and the release.

The film too is quite hot across the trade circles. Prashanth Neel is thinking of making Salaar in two parts but he will complete the shoot of both the parts for now. After the super success of Akhanda, Balakrishna and Boyapati are keen about the sequel. Balayya recently announced that the script for the sequel is ready. Considering the success, brand and the trend, several filmmakers are following the sequel trend. At the same time, it is also a risk to take up the sequel without content. The expectations will be high and they have to be reached.

Shoots On Pause: South to rework economics

‘RRR’, ‘KGF’, ‘Pushpa: The Rise’, ‘Baahubali’ and other such big hits, and one would think that the South Indian film industry is rolling in money! Evidently, it is not so. And that is what bothers the filmmakers in the South.

Their malady is that just about everybody connected with the making of a film, from the stars to the technicians, makes money when a film is being made except for the producer. To contemplate on this issue, the Active Telugu Film Producers Guild (ATFPG) met last week.

Films such as ‘Baahubali’, ‘Pushpa’, ‘RRR’ are a flash in the pan and the media celebrates only those. But the Guild contends that against these few blockbusters, which appear periodically, there are many other films that drag a film producer deep into the red.

That a film producer always makes money is a perception people live with because of the stars. The stars are the face of the film industry. Their riches and the glamour quotient are for the people to see, not the plight of those behind the scenes. In the popular perception, if stars make so much money, certainly, the ones who employ them must be earning so much more!

How one hopes this was true, that producers were the ones employing stars! The fact is that once a star is signed, a producer starts working for the star. In the Hindi industry, all but a successful few borrowed at the rate of 3 per cent per month, or 36 per cent per annum! The interest was chargeable every quarter and deducted while landing.

It was a desperate situation for a film producer. Because, not only his film, even his household ran on this borrowed money. He was a full-time filmmaker and had no other source of income. All this because though this was called an Industry, it was never recognised as one and therefore not privy to institutional finance. Which, if nothing, would be available at a reasonable rate of interest.

Usually, a film producer lived on liabilities, always owing money to his financiers, which got transferred from one film to the next, unless his film turned out to be a big hit. Only that day did he stand a chance to pay up his debts and emerge clean. That, too, depended a lot on his distributors and if they paid his overflow (share of the profit after recovering his investment). The distributors were, almost always, only partly honest.

There were some filmmakers whose finances were structured in such a way that even the world rights of their movies vested with the financer. He controlled all the transactions, including the profit earned by the film, till he recovered his investment, or over a stipulated period. In such an event, even if the film was a hit, the profits went to this world rights holder.

The best case of such an understanding was film producer Yash Johar, the founder of Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. Yash Johar enjoyed tremendous goodwill in the industry, making many well-received films such as ‘Duniya’, ‘Duplicate’, ‘Agneepath’ and ‘Gumrah’ with the biggest of stars. Yet, Johar never tasted success.

Finally, when success came to him with ‘Dostana’ (starring Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha), his profit was mortgaged to the film’s world rights controller for the next 10 years!

Yash Johar, such as he was, would laugh at his situation. One hit I make and the profit goes to someone else. That is the way the film business worked. The producer was the one who put together a project, slogged for a year or two but got little or nothing back at the end. The producer knew his situation well, but had no way of coming out of the quagmire.

Recently, the Multiplex Association of India (MAI) decided that a Hindi film will be released on OTT platforms only after eight

weeks of its theatrical release! Whose film is it, who is the producer? And, why does MAI decide on such matters for a producer? Well, that is the way it has been for a long time. From the number of screens to be assigned to a film to the admission rates, it is all decided by the multiplex operators.

Filmmakers, in Mumbai or in the South, are all facing similar problems that make filmmaking a risky business for them. The major problems faced by them are also the same: high admission rates at the cinemas; impractical out-of-proportion star earnings and the OTT effect on the box-office prospects of films.

South Indian filmmakers, especially the Telugu film industry, have decided to tackle these three problems to start with. The Hindi filmmakers, despite (or due to) four associations representing the production sector, have shown neither the courage, nor the inclination to take the lead. They are kind of used to the terms being dictated by others, whether the cinemas or the stars.

Now, the producers in South India, especially in the Telugu film industry, have decided to do something about it. The Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce has broadly classified films into small, medium and big budget for the purpose of implementation of its resolutions.

Accordingly, films will have to keep a four-week window between their theatrical and OTT releases, but the big- budget ones will have to adhere to an eight-week window before their OTT release.

The admission rates for small-budget films in the A and B centres should start from a maximum of Rs 100 for single screens and Rs 125 for multiplexes. For medium-budget films, the rates should start from Rs 122 for single screens and Rs 177 for multiplexes. The respective rates for big budget films should be Rs 177 and Rs 295.

These admission rates apply to Telangana because in Andhra Pradsh, which is also a Telugu film market, the rate ceilings have already been applied by the state government.

The producers also discussed the high fees charged by the stars, contending that nobody else but them were making money in the film industry. All these problems, which are faced equally by the Hindi film industry, were discussed in the meeting, which concluded by noting: “Producers and distributors had gotten into the habit of inflating box-office collections of films to paint a rosy picture of the stars of those films in a bid to satisfy their egos.”

This, according to the producers, spurred the stars to further hike their remunerations.

The Telugu industry appears to be serious about the matter and has decided to stop all film activities, including shoots, from August 1.

The Hindi industry, on the other hand, has taken no initiative yet to solve its problems. Looks like they have started believing in their own inflated box-office figures and are happy. Who are these figures fooling except the filmmakers themselves?

A flurry of speculation about ‘KGF’ director’s female-centric movie

    0

Prashanth Neel, the director of the ‘KGF’ franchise, has achieved pan-India fame following the success of his two-part movie.

Speculations surround the director’s next project, one of which is said to be a female-centric film.

A few online sources went on to decode a few scenes from ‘KGF- 2’, which hint at a strong character, specifically a female role, with the potential to be made as an entirely new film in the franchise.

According to the sources, the first girl child is born in Kollar Gold Fields in Chapter 2 of ‘KGF’, and Rocky Bhai names her after his mother.

And, as the girl grows up under the watchful eye of a strong guardian following Rocky Bhai’s death, surely there is room to tell her story as well.

According to reports, the story will be told in the form of a female-centric film starring a superstar in the lead role.

Some claim that Prashanth Neel’s writing team is also working on this spin-off, though it is unclear whether they will release it or not.

Meanwhile, Prashanth Neel will have to wrap up ‘Salaar’ with Prabhas, after which he will direct Jr. NTR for their ‘NTR31’, before he commits himself to another project.

    0

A collage poster shared by ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ director Prashanth Neel has left everyone guessing. Audiences and movie buffs are wondering about the message the star director has conveyed through his poster.

Prashanth Neel has shared a post on social media which contains the collage photo of his three projects. ‘KGF: Chapter2’ and his upcoming movies ‘Salaar’ with Prabhas and ‘NTR-31’ with Jr NTR.

The statement of producer Vijay Kiragandoor of Hombale Films that ‘KGF: Chapter 3’ would have superheroes like Hollywood has piqued interest.

The fans are also guessing that the characters of all three movies would get connected at one point. The fans are further guessing that the character of Rocky bhai in ‘KGF 2′ and Prabhas’ character would meet in the upcoming movie ‘Salaar’.

Fans are also surmising that even the character in ‘Bagheera’ for which Prashanth Neel has written the screenplay would also be a part of the upcoming ambitious project.

However, Prashanth Neel has not reacted to any comments and speculation in this connection.

3 months and 3 South films: Will Bollywood rechristen itself?

In the last three to four months of time, three south movies outperformed Bollywood movies and it is learnt that there’s a paradigm shift in the approach of Bollywood makers on film making. However the Big question is whether Bollywood will be able to rechristen itself and reclaim the throne i.e. top Industry of the country. Details as follows.

Three movies that have outperformed Bollywood movies in recent times are – Pushpa, RRR and KGF2. When Pushpa was released there wasn’t much buzz though. However the movie surpassed another Bollywood Big movie 83. Later when RRR released, Bollywood hero John Abraham commented that “We are not number 2 to any other industry “ and released his “Attack” movie while RRR was in theatres. Attack movie was a disaster at the box office. Now during KGF2 , Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey movie got postponed to release at a later point of time. Before just a couple of years, Telugu and Kannada movies forcing Bollywood movies change their release date couldn’t be conceived even in the dreams.

Now Bollywood makers seem to be in the thinking mode and plan movies on pan India scale. Most of the big wigs of Bollywood are asking the writers to again focus on heroic subjects rather than multiplex subjects. We need to wait and see whether Bollywood will be able to rechristen itself and if so how fast can that happen..

Pan India star: Real test for Yash starts now

KGF Chapter 2 is running successfully in theatres. The movie that has made Yash a pan India star comes to an end now. Even though the makers are planning for chapter 3, it may take a few years to start on that project. So, the analysts opine, the real test for Yash starts now. Details as follows.

After Bahubali series, Prabhas also has faced this problem. After working on a mammoth project like Bahubali and earning the pan India star tag, Prabhas wanted to continue the same scale on other projects as well. However there are not many directors in the country who conceive and execute such pan India level projects. Yash has now completed KGF and he is yet to sign the next project while his director Prashant Neil already working on Salar project. The problem for Yash is also the same that , there are not many directors in Kannada Film industry who can equate Prashant Neil capabilities. So, Yash may have to look at the directors from other languages. But top directors in Telugu have all blocked their time for next couple years and so he may need to look at the directors from Tamil or Hindi. On the other hand there is no dearth of producers as everybody wants to cash on the craze that Yash has just earned.

We need to wait and see whether Yash will be able to make right decisions and set right projects to continue the tag of Pan Indian star.

Prashanth Neel about the journey of KGF

    1

KGF started as a Kannada film and it is now a pan-Indian project. It was Prashanth Neel’s vision that made the first installment a super hit and paved path for a sequel. Explaining about the journey of KGF, Prashanth Neel said “We started the journey of the film in the mid of 2014. After Hombale Films agreed to do the film, we approached Yash and got his nod. I took a year to complete the script of KGF and the shoot commenced in early 2017. None among us made such a big movie before. It is our journey and hard work which made KGF a huge project”.

He said “I thank Yash and my production house for the immense support throughout the journey. A month after the shoot, I got the idea of making KGF into two parts. We took a break for a month and completed the screenplay of the film. After the first installment ended up as a massive hit, I got ample budget for the sequel. KGF: Chapter 2 would be emotional and action-packed. We picked up the right actors and the biggest conflict in the film is between Yash and Sanjay Dutt”. KGF: Chapter 2 is gearing up for a record release tomorrow.
