Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy meets PM, discusses Polavaram project

1

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to help in completing the construction of the Polavaram project at the earliest.

He also urged him to approve the revised cost estimates of Rs 55,548.87 crore as already approved by the Technical Advisory Committee.

Jagan Mohan Reddy called on the Prime Minister at the latter’s residence in Delhi and discussed several key issues related to the state including Polavaram project, compensating resource gap funds, rationality in coverage of beneficiaries under National Food Security Act, arrears from Telangana Discoms to the state, and Special Category Status.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) here, Reddy requested Modi to reimburse Rs 2,900 crore which was spent by the state government towards the Polavaram Project, and to clear the bills on fortnightly basis like in other national projects and not component-wise.

The Chief Minister also requested him to provide Rs 10,000 crore on an ad-hoc basis so that the construction works of the project can proceed smoothly. He appealed to provide relief and rehabilitation package to the displaced families in a Direct Benifit Transfer (DBT) manner, which ensures transparency.

He asked the Prime Minister to release funds of Rs 32,625 crore under Resource Gap Fund for various pending bills under 10th Pay Commission, including social security pensions and others during the period 2014-15.

The Chief Minister explained to the Prime Minister that due to the lack of rationalisation in the selection of eligible persons under the National Food Security Act, the state is suffering serious losses and has already brought this matter to his attention, where a large number of needy and deserving persons were uncovered.

Reddy said that the state government is providing a ration to 2.68 crore beneficiaries, of which 61 per cent belong to rural areas and 41 per cent are from urban areas. He reminded that as per the law, 75 per cent of people in rural areas and 50 per cent of people in urban areas should get benefits under PDS and said that states like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat, which are economically better than Andhra Pradesh, have almost 10 per cent more beneficiaries than Andhra Pradesh, due to which the state government is providing ration to the leftover 56 lakh eligible beneficiaries shouldering an additional burden of Rs 5,527.63 crore.

He said that the NITI Aayog has already met with the state government officials and told the Central government to revise the data in this regard and reminded the Prime Minister that the allocations to Andhra Pradesh should be examined.

He explained to the Prime Minister that 3 lakh tonnes of the rice quota allotted to the state every month remains unutilised, and asked him to allocate only 77,000 tonnes, which will be sufficient for the distribution without causing any additional burden on the Centre.

Discussing the promises given during state bifurcation, Reddy said that there was no rationality in the bifurcation, because of which the state suffered a lot and requested the Prime Minister to fulfill the promises given as a parliamentary witness including Special Category Status.

He said that special class status will boost the growth in the industrial sector, job creation, grants from the Centre, and tax concessions, thereby reducing the burden on the state.

The Chief Minister also told the Prime Minister that an arrear of Rs 6,756 crore receivable by Andhra Pradesh Generation Corporation Limited (APGENCO) from the Telangana government has remained unresolved for over eight years and requested the Prime Minister to direct the concerned authorities to settle the dues at the earliest so that the state power sector could be financially strengthened.

He also urged the Prime Minister to give approvals for setting up another 12 medical colleges in the state to cater to 26 districts. In regard to setting up an Integrated Steel Plant in the YSR district, he requested to allocate iron mines to APMDC for an uninterrupted supply of iron ore to operate the plant. He said that the allocation of mines is very important for setting up a steel plant, which enables a stable transport of ore.

Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital. While it is not known why the chief minister is meeting Modi for the second time in a month, sources say that Jagan Mohan Reddy would also be meeting President Draupadi Murmu and vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar, who were elected to the respective posts recently.

Jagan Mohan Reddy had promised them that he would get the R&R package at the earliest and ensure that the displaced families have a better life ahead. He had also told them that he would bring a better package for them from the Central government.

Hence, the Polavaram is one of the key issues for the chief minister to raise before the Prime Minister, the Jal Shankhi Minister and the Finance Minister, whom all he would be meeting in Delhi.

Will you withdraw freebies and go for polls, KTR asks Modi

0

Freebies to the people has become a controversial issue now with several top heads expressing their opinions against continuation of freebies. Chief Justice of India, Justice N V Ramana, Vice-President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu and many others have advised the political parties and the governments not to encourage freebies.

They have said that the freebies would cause major damage to the nation’s economy. These comments came simultaneously with the Reserve Bank of India releasing a note on the waiver of over Rs 10,000 lakh crore of bad debts to the big industrialists and business firms in the country.

Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken against the freebies for a healthy economy.

Telangana Rastra Samithi working president and minister, K Taraka Ramarao, reacted sharply to the Prime Minister’s comments and dared the BJP leadership to go for next elections after withdrawing the welfare schemes by the Central government and also all the BJP-ruled state governments.

KTR wanted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce the withdrawal of freebies and for the next round of elections to the Parliament and also to the states with a slogan of better economy without freebies.

KTR took strong exception to the term freebies and wondered how the BJP leadership is justifying debt waiver for the rich, while speaking very low of welfare schemes as freebies. He sought to advise the Prime Minister and the BJP leaders to stop favouring and promoting the rich and looking down at the poor.

Modi talks to Naidu, TDP pins hopes on alliance

1

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a brief chat with TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu at a meeting in Delhi on Saturday. The two leaders met at the national level meeting organised to celebrate Azaadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav in the country marking 75 years of Independence.

Chandrababu Naidu was invited by the Union government to attend the meeting which was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was for the first time in the last five years that the two leaders spoke to each other.

After the meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi walked down to Chandrababu Naidu and took him aside. They spoke for about five minutes in a pleasant situation.

The TDP broke alliance with the BJP in 2018 on the special category status demand. After breaking the alliance, Chandrababu Naidu joined hands with the Congress leaders to defeat the BJP in the 2019 elections. He toured in several states campaigning against the BJP.

However, the 2019 results showed different prospects for the BJP and the TDP. The TDP lost power in Andhra Pradesh, while the BJP retained power with greater majority. Since then, Chandrababu Naidu never took the opportunity to speak to the BJP leaders.

Back in Andhra Pradesh, there is a strong demand from the TDP ranks for alliance with the BJP and Jana Sena for the 2024 elections. While Jana Sena is ready for the alliance, the BJP had been saying that doors were closed for the TDP.

In politics, there will be no permanent friends and enemies. Likewise, the invitation to Chandrababu Naidu for the meeting and Modi interacting with Naidu have given scope for the TDP ranks to heave a sigh of relief. They are confident that Chandrababu Naidu would break the silence and restore alliance with the BJP in the next elections.

It is to be seen what is in store and whether the BJP would accept the alliance with the TDP or not.

Black balloons released at Vijayawada airport during PM’ visit

1

Andhra Pradesh Police on Monday arrested three Congress leaders for releasing black balloons at Gannavaram airport during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.

Some Congress leaders released the balloons as a mark of protest during Modi’s brief visit to Andhra Pradesh over the Centre not granting special status to the state.

The balloons were released near the airport when the helicopter carrying the Prime Minister had taken off for Bhimavaram.

After landing of his special aircraft at Gannavaram airport, the Prime Minister left for Bhimavaram in West Godavari district by a helicopter to launch 125th birth anniversary celebrations of freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju.

Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan and Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, who were at the airport to receive Modi, also left for Bhimavaram by another helicopter.

Taking serious note of the incident, police launched an investigation. They found that Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) secretary Rajiv Ratan released the balloons.

Since the area around airport was declared a no-fly zone in view of the PM’s visit, the release of balloons which came closer to the helicopters is being treated as a serious security lapse.

A case was registered against Rajiv Ratan, who is reported to be absconding. A police team was on the lookout for him. Meanwhile, police have arrested three Congress leaders for releasing the balloons.

State Congress leader Sunkara Padmasri was also detained by the police when she reached the airport raising slogans of ‘Modi go back’.

Holding a placard and raising slogans, she tried to move towards passenger terminal but was stopped and whisked away by police.

She alleged that both Modi and Jagan Reddy betrayed Andhra Pradesh over the issue of special status.

After the incident, police further stepped up security around the airport when Modi returned from Bhimavaram.

Bow and quiver of arrows is a symbolic representation of ‘Manyam Veerudu’ or forest hero as Alluri Seetarama Raju was popularly known. The tribal warrior took on the might of British with bow and arrows and led a rebellion with an army of tribals with their traditional weapons and astounding warfare.

While felicitating relatives of Sitarama Raju and tribal chieftain Mallu Dora, the Prime Minister bowed to them.

Both Modi and Jagan Mohan Reddy paid rich tributes to Sitarama Raju.

Modi began his speech with few words in Telugu, evoking applause from the people.

He unveiled a 30-feet bronze statue of Sitarama Raju to launch year-long celebrations.

The chief minister, in his speech, said that freedom fighters aspired to build a society where there is no exploitation from one person to another, one country on another one. He stated that lakhs of fighters have laid their lives for the freedom of the country.

Jagan Mohan Reddy said that Alluri Sitarama Raju is one among such fighters, who was born in Andhra Pradesh and fought against foreign rule.

He pointed out that a district in Andhra Pradesh was named after Alluri Sitarama Raju during the recent reorganisation, and stated that a bronze statue is being unveiled in that district too marking his 125th birth anniversary.

He said that the nation will never forget a great man like him, who sacrificed his life at a young age, and stated that future generations shall cherish his fighting spirit.

Modi invokes the spirit of freedom fighters for building new India

1

New India should be the India of the dreams of freedom fighters, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday here.

He said that when India is celebrating 75 years of its Independence, it is the responsibility of all the countrymen to fulfil the dreams of freedom fighters. “Our new India should be the India of their dreams. An India – in which the poor, farmers, labourers, backward, tribals all have equal opportunities,” he said while addressing a public meeting here to launch the 125th birth anniversary celebration of legendary freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju.

The Prime Minister launched the year-long celebrations with the unveiling of a 30-feet bronze statue of Sitarama Raju. Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan, Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, Union minister for tourism and culture G. Kishan Reddy, former Union minister and Telugu superstar K. Chiranjeevi were present.

Paying rich tributes to Sitarama Raju, he said the great tribal fighter challenged the British with the slogan ‘Dum hai to rok lo’ (Stop me if you can). “Today the country is also facing various challenges. With the same spirit and courage, 130 crore countrymen, with unity and strength, are telling every challenge – ‘Dum hai to hamain rok lo (stop us if you can).”

The Prime Minister said that he is feeling privileged to get the opportunity to salute the great land of Andhra Pradesh with such a rich legacy. He noted that the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav coincides with the 125th birth anniversary of Alluri Sitarama Raju and 100 years of Rampa Rebellion.

Modi said he bowed to the memory of the great “Manyam Veerudu” Alluri Sitarama Raju and paid him tributes on behalf of the entire country. He also expressed happiness at meeting the members of the family of the great freedom fighter.

He noted that to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Sitarama Raju, the government has taken up restoration of his birth place at Pandrangi, renovation of Chintapalli police station and construction of Alluri Dhyana Mandir at Mogallu. “These works are symbols of the spirit of Amrit Mahotsav. Today’s programme reflects the pledge of making everyone aware of the heroic deeds of our freedom fighters,” he said.

The Prime Minister stated that the freedom struggle is not just a history of a few years, few areas, or of a few people. “This history is the history of sacrifice, tenacity and sacrifices of every nook and corner of India. History of our freedom movement is a symbol of the strength of our diversity, culture and of our unity as a nation,” he added.

Terming Alluri Sitarama Raju a symbol of India’s culture, tribal identity, valour, ideals and values, the Prime Minister remarked that from the birth of Sitaram Raju Garu to his sacrifice, his life journey is an inspiration to all of us. He dedicated his life for the rights of tribal society, for their happiness and for the freedom of the country. “Alluri Sitarama Raju represents the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ that has been uniting the country,” the Prime Minister said.

Modi said that India’s spiritualism gave Alluri Sitarama Raju a sense of compassion and kindness, a sense of identification and equality for the tribal society, knowledge and courage. Noting the youth of Alluri Sitarama Raju and those who laid down their lives at the Rampa Rebellion, the Prime Minister emphasised that their sacrifice is a source of energy and inspiration for the entire nation even today. “Youth of the country led the freedom struggle. Today, this is the best opportunity for the youth to come forward for the development of the country. There are new opportunities, avenues, thought processes and possibilities in New India today and our youth is taking up the responsibility of realising these possibilities.”

The Prime Minister said Andhra Pradesh is the land of heroes and patriots. Here there were freedom heroes like Pingali Venkayya, who designed the national flag, Kaneganti Hanumanthu, Kandukuri Veeresalingam Pantulu and Potti Sriramulu.

He claimed that during the last 8 years, the government has worked relentlessly for the welfare of the tribal community of the country. For the first time since Independence, tribal museums are being set up to showcase the tribal pride and heritage in the country. “Alluri Sitarama Raju Memorial Tribal Freedom Fighters Museum” is also being built in Lambasingi near Visakhapatnam. SimilarlyNovember 15, the birthday of Bhagwan Birsa Munda has been demarcated as Rashtriya Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas. The Prime Minister said that the foreign rulers perpetrated maximum atrocities on the tribal community and tried to destroy their culture.

The Prime Minister said today tribal art and skills are getting a new identity through the Skill India Mission. ‘Vocal for Local’ is making tribal art skills a means of income. Decades old laws which prevented tribal people from cutting forest produce like bamboo, we changed them and gave them rights on forest produce, he said. Similarly, the number of forest products for MSP procurement increased from 12 to more than 90. More than 3,000 Van Gan Vikas Kendra and More than 50,000 Van Gana Self Help Groups are connecting tribal products and art with modern opportunities. Aspirational Districts Schemes will greatly benefit tribal districts and, on the education front, more than 750 Eklavya Model schools are being established and education in Mother tongue is being promoted under National Education Policy.

PM avoids attacking KCR, promises development of Telangana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday claimed that people of Telangana double-engine government of BJP but avoided attacking Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government.

Addressing a massive public meeting at Parade Grounds, he exuded confidence that the BJP will come to power in Telangana.

He, however, surprisingly avoided criticising KCR or his government. As the public meeting was held a day after KCR launched a bitter attack on Modi and dared him to answer his questions, it was expected that the Prime Minister would give a strong counter.

Speaking at a meeting organised by TRS on Saturday to welcome opposition parties’ combined candidate for Presidential election, Yashwant Sinha, KCR had slammed Modi for ‘killing democracy’ and ‘acting like a adictator’.

Unlike in the past when Modi came down heavily on KCR for family rule and appeasement politics, this time he made no mention of the Chief Minister or TRS.

He instead focused on listing out steps taken by the Central government during the last eight years for the development of Telangana and what BJP would do if voted to power in the state.

“When BJP forms a double-engineered government in Telangana, every city and every village will see development at a rapid pace. We have to link all with positivity and development. We have to speed up the development and take Telangana to new heights,” he said.

The public meeting organised at the end of the two-day national executive of the BJP received a huge response with thousands of people from various parts of the state converging at Parade Grounds.

Union ministers Amit Shah and Piyush Goyal, BJP national president J.P. Nadda, party’s state president Bandi Sanjay Kumar were the other speakers.

Several central ministers, chief ministers of BJP-ruled states and many top leaders of the party were present.

In his speech, Modi claimed that the support of Telangana people for BJP grew manifold since 2019 Lok Sabha elections when the party had bagged four seats.

“The states with double-engine governments of BJP are witnessing rapid development and increasing trust. The people of Telangana have the same aspiration. They have awakened and are paving way for a double-engine government,” he said.

Claiming that all round development of Telangana is among top priorities of BJP, the Prime Minister said his government was working continuously for the state’s development.

He said in the last eight years, his government tried to bring a change in the lives of every citizen and the benefit of development reached the people.

“Those remained backward and deprived for decades have been partners in development. Poor, Dalit, oppressed, backward and tribals all feel that BJP government is meeting their requirements and aspirations,” he said.

He claimed that the benefits of schemes of the Central government were reaching all sections of people in Telangana. He spoke about the help provided during Covid pandemic including free vaccines, free ration and free medical treatment of the poor.

Modi stated that his government was making a sincere effort to turn women’s power into national power. He told the public meeting that surveys show that women’s partnership has increased in the money deposited in the banks.

He pointed out that out of 45 crore Jan Dhan bank accounts opened in the country, Telangana accounted for one crore. He said 55 per cent of the bank accounts were of women.

“Two-third of Mudra loans were provided to women. Under Standup India, 80 per cent of loans were given to women.”

Speaking about the strengths of Telangana in research and innovation, he said the work done here for Covid vaccine and other equipment during the pandemic saved crores of lives.

Earlier, Amit Shah during his speech slammed KCR and TRS for family rule and called on the people to throw the TRS government out of power and give BJP a chance. He alleged that KCR is only bothered about making his son the chief minister.

He reiterated that the steering of TRS’ car is in the hands of MIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi.

He also alleged that KCR went back on his promise to celebrate Telangana Liberation Day officially due to pressure from Owaisi.

Shah said that KCR does not go to the state secretariat as a tantrik told him that if he goes to the secretariat he will lose the government.

Stating that BJP-ruled states are witnessing rapid progress, he said Telangana was going backward.

BJP president Nadda alleged that KCR was resorting to undemocratic means to suppress opposition. He predicted that the BJP will definitely come to power in the state.

The BJP leader also remarked that the Kaleshwaram irrigation project became an ATM for KCR as he inflated the cost of the project from Rs 32,000 to Rs 132,000 crore. He alleged that because of corruption by the TRS government, Telangana’s debts mounted to Rs 4 lakh crore.

Telangana CM KCR launches scathing attack on PM Modi

1

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday came down heavily on the BJP government at the Centre led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing it of killing democracy and federal system in the country.

He also alleged that the Centre is letting loose repression on those raising their voice against him.

Hours before Modi’s arrival in Hyderabad to attend BJP’s national executive meeting, Rao launched a bitter attack on him and dared him to answer his questions at the BJP public meeting scheduled in the city on Sunday.

KCR, as Rao is popularly known, was addressing a meeting organised by his Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) after welcoming Yashwant Sinha, who is joint candidate of opposition parties for Presidential elections.

“Definitely a change will come. There were several Prime Ministers before you. People gave them the opportunity and they played their role,” KCR said.

KCR also alleged that the Modi is busy toppling state governments.

“So far you have toppled nine governments,” he said.

On a statement by a Union minister that BJP can topple the government in Telangana too as it did in Maharashtra, KCR said he is waiting for it.

“We are waiting for it, so that we could become free and topple you in Delhi,” he said.

KCR also slammed the Centre for its coal import policy. He questioned the need for importing coal when India has sufficient coal stocks for 100 years. He alleged that to benefit his corporate friends, the Prime Minister is importing coal and forcing states to use 10 per cent of the imported coal.

The Chief Minister also said the Telangana government has refused to buy imported coal. He pointed out that the price of imported coal is Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per tonne against Rs 4,000 per tonne price of domestic coal.

KCR said India is facing humiliation at the international level due to the policies adopted by the Centre to create division among people and spread hate.

He also wanted to know the results of the ‘Make in India’ campaign, claiming that the investors are pulling out their investments from the country.

The TRS leader also asked when will India become a $5 trillion economy if it grows at its current pace.

KCR claimed that while the Centre merely coined a slogan, neighbouring China showed the results on the ground. China, which once had lower growth than India, has become a $16 trillion economy while India is still at $3.1 trillion, he said.

“In China, there is less talk and more action, therefore the outcome is its pacing economy. Here all talk, no work, so no outcome,” he said.

“Make in India is a big lie. People are losing their jobs and labourers are on the road,” KCR added.

The stay was earlier planned at Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the governor. However, the state police reportedly raised concern over the proposal.

As Raj Bhavan is located in the heart of the city and surrounded by busy roads, the police had recommended the Special Protection Group (SPG) to make arrangements for his stay at Novotel. The police raised the concern over the choice of Raj Bhavan in view of the recent protest there by Congress party over Enforcement Directorate (ED) summons to its leader Rahul Gandhi and the June 17 violence during anti-Agnipath protest at Secunderabad railway station.

It was pointed out that PM’s stay at Novotel will also avoid PM’s travel by road from Raj Bhavan to the national executive meet venue for two days. Travel by road would require traffic restrictions along the busy route.

Will Raghurama join Modi at Bhimavaram?

1

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address a public meeting at Bhimavaram of West Godavari district on July 4. The Prime Minister would also address a meeting at Visakhapatnam on the same day.

Modi is visiting the state for a one day programme to participate in the 125 birth anniversary of freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju. The celebrations are part of Azadi ka Amrut Mahostav being organised by the Central government marking 75 years of Independence.

Bhimavaram is part of the Narasapuram Assembly constituency which is represented by the YSR Congress rebel MP K Raghurama Krishnam Raju. After he deferred with the parent party, Raju has been avoiding visits to the constituency.

Now taking the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the rebel MP is said to be planning to visit the constituency and attend the meeting. However, it is said that he is suspected the state government arresting him if he arrived,

Smelling the possible arrest, the MP is said to have written a letter to the DGP asking him to provide security for him during his visit. It is also said that the rebel MP had informed the DGP that he would seek protection from the Prime Minister’s Office to attend the meeting if the state police failed to provide security.

Will the state government allow the rebel MP to be present along with the Prime Minister is the big question now doing rounds in the political circles!

BJP steps up its plans for Andhra Pradesh

0

The BJP seems to have stepped up its plans for Andhra Pradesh. The party, which is eying on making its presence in the state, has lined up a series of programmes with the top leaders including party president J P Nadda and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the state.

Nadda is addressing the party workers in Vijayawada today. He would also interact with a select group of intellectuals, professionals in a hotel. Later, he would interact with the party top leaders. He is spending the whole day in the city.

The party leadership had also lined up a series of programmes across the state with some leader or the other coming from Delhi. Even the Central ministers are invited to address the party workers at every meeting.

The party had planned the visit of Central ministers to every city in the state. They have so far covered Visakhapatnam, Rajamahendravaram, Ananthapur and Vijayawada. At every visit of every minister, the party organises internal and informal meetings with the professionals like doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers and others.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Bhimavaram in West Godavari district on July 4. The Prime Minister would participate in the Alluri Sitaramaraju birth anniversary celebrations in the town and address a public meeting.

The party has been holding one programme or the other marking the eighth anniversary of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister. Interestingly, the BJP is targeting the TDP leaders to join the party as they organise events in one district or the other.

While TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu and Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan are planning for alliance, the BJP is focusing on luring the TDP leaders to weaken Chandrababu Naidu. It is to be seen how far the BJP plans will help the party to prove its presence in the state.

Jagan to Delhi tomorrow to meet Modi

1

Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is likely to visit the national capital Delhi on Thursday. He is likely to reach Delhi by noon or evening, depending on the schedule.

The chief minister is planning to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and others during his stay in the national capital.

The visit is to be crucial as the Presidential election is on the cards. The BJP is looking for suitable candidates to succeed President Ram Nath Kovind in the Rastrapati Bhavan. It is for this reason, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister wants to have consultation with Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is having considerable votes in the election.

Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress has 151 MLAs and 22 Lok Sabha members, which will play a key role in the election of President. Keeping his vote bank in mind, it is believed that the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister wants to have consultation with Jagan Mohan Reddy even before finalising a name and announcing the candidature.

Meanwhile, sources say that Jagan Mohan Reddy is also likely to have consultations with the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister on the Polavaram project. The project is already in limbo due to the faulty constructions during the TDP regime.

The lack of construction of a proper spillway had caused damage to the diaphragm wall during the last monsoon floods. The senior officials from the Union Jal Shakti ministry, officials from the Central Water Commission and the technical team have visited the project to make an assessment of the damage.

The project’s designs committee had also visited the Polavaram Project site to assess the damage and give a road map to go forward on the project. The chief minister is likely to discuss the issue with the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister besides the Union Jal Shakti minister on the future of the project.

Andhra teacher praised by Modi in ‘Mann Ki Baat’

1

A teacher from Andhra Pradesh, who spent his entire retirement benefits on the education of girls, came in for praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday, Modi hailed the gesture of Markapuram Ram Bhupal Reddy.

A retired school headmaster from Giddalur, Prakasam, did not use his retirement benefits to build a house or for other family purposes as most of the government employees do after retirement.

He deposited Rs 25.71 lakh at a post office to open Sukanya Samrudhhi Yojana (SSY) accounts for 88 girls over the age of 10 years.

Every quarter, the interest amount of Rs 41,000 on the deposit would be equally distributed and credited to the accounts of the girls till they attain the age of 21 years.

Ram Bhupal Reddy, who retired as the headmaster of Yadavalli Zilla Parishad School, said he was disturbed when he saw many girls dropping out of school as their parents could not afford to continue their education.

He had decided to do something to help such children with whatever benefit he gets on retirement. This way he wanted to ensure that at least some girls continue their education.

He identified 88 girls from poor families and deposited the entire amount in their accounts under the Government of India’s scheme.

The SSY account passbooks were handed over to all the students at Bhupal Reddy’s superannuation function recently.

During his entire career, Ram Bhupal Reddy helped students from poor backgrounds in whatever way he could.

He not only used to pay their fees but also used to distribute new clothes to them at festivals.

He received four awards from three chief ministers of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh for his contributions to education.

He also conducted workshops and meetings to help teachers improve their expertise in their subjects.

To encourage teachers to perform better, he also helped conduct a grand felicitation function to reward 6,300 subject-teachers of schools, which got cent per cent results in the Class 10 exams.

PM’s Hyderabad visit to rev up Telangana BJP

0

Prime Minister Narendra Mod’s visit to Hyderabad on May 26 is likely to rev up the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Telangana.

During the visit Modi is likely to address BJP leaders and this comes close on the heels of BJP national president J.P. Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit.

BJP leaders expect that Modi’s visit will infuse new enthusiasm in the party as it gears up for upcoming Assembly elections in the state.

With ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) reportedly mulling the idea to go for early elections, BJP leaders expect Modi’s visit to be a morale booster for the party.

The Assembly elections in the state are due towards the end of 2023 but Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is reported to be planning to go for polls by the end of current year or early next year.

Though the Prime Minister will be visiting Hyderabad to participate in the annual day celebrations of the Indian School of Business (ISB), BJP’s Telangana unit has requested the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to include in his schedule a meeting with the state party leadership at Begumpet Airport in the city.

State BJP chief Bandi Sanjay has requested the BJP’s central leadership to facilitate the meeting. He told the party leaders that Modi’s meeting with the state party leaders and an address to the cadres would help lift their spirits.

The saffron party is already upbeat over Modi’s visit and is planning a grand reception at the airport. The party leaders have started working on sprucing up the area around the airport. As the PM is likely to travel to ISB by road, the party will deck up the route with party flags, banners, cutouts and flexi.

Before leaving for ISB, PM Modi will also dedicate to the nation the Ramagundam Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited the virtual event to be held at the airport.

Modi will be the third key BJP leader to visit Telangana in three weeks. BJP president Nadda had addressed a public meeting at Mahabubnagar on May 5 as part of the second leg of Bandi Sanjay’s ‘Praja Sangram Yatra’.

Amit Shah had addressed a massive public meeting at Tukkuguda near Hyderabad on May 14 to mark the culmination of the yatra.

BJP leaders claimed that the visit by Nadda and Shah boosted the morale of the party and they are now looking forward to Prime Minister’s visit to continue the momentum.

Sanjay is reported to have earned the praise from Modi for the successful conduct of his yatra.

At their public meetings, both Nadda and Shah claimed that people of Telangana want double-engine growth and their mood is reflected in the BJP’s victory in the Dubbaka and Huzurabad Assembly by-elections in 2020 and 2021 respectively and the impressive performance of the party in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections in 2020.

The BJP has four Lok Sabha members from Telangana while the party has three members in 119-member Assembly.

Jagan meets PM Modi, its more politics than state issues

0

Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy had a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday in Delhi. The two leaders held an hour-long meeting and were said to have discussed various issues, including national politics.

While the chief minister’s office in Tadepalli claims that the chief minister had discussed the issues relating to the state, what actually transpired between them is said to be a different issue. Sources say that the two leaders have discussed the forthcoming elections to the post of President.

The Presidential election is scheduled for July 2022, three to four months from now. As the BJP is yet to name its candidate for the Presidential polls, sources say that the Prime Minister had a word with Jagan Mohan Reddy on the consensus candidate.

Though Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress is not part of the BJP-led NDA government, the party’s vote is important for the BJP to get its candidate won the election. Since the YSR Congress had backed the BJP-led NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovid in 2017 elections, the Prime Minister is understood to have sought support from the YSR Congress this time too.

Sources also say that Jagan Mohan Reddy and Narendra Modi have discussed the impending Rajya Sabha elections from Andhra Pradesh. Four BJP members and one YSR Congress member are due for retirement in June this year. The BJP’s strength had come down to 100 members in the 245-member House. With three members retiring in June from AP, the BJP strength would further fall.

At the same time, the YSR Congress Party’s strength will go up to 9 members against six members now. Given the strength of the party in the Assembly, the YSR Congress will clearly win all the four seats. However, it is said that Narendra Modi is said to have asked for one seat to be given to the Adani family.

In the last Rajya Sabha elections from Andhra Pradesh, Jagan Mohan Reddy had given one seat to the Ambani family, now represented by Parimal Nathwani. Similarly, this time Jagan Mohan Reddy is likely to give one seat to the Ambani family, which is said to be discussed by both Modi and Jagan.

Modi, Jeeyar Swamy impact on Yadadri temple!

1

Yadadri temple renovation is the dream project of TRS president and Telangana Chief Minister K.Chandrashekar Rao. Rao visited nearly 18 times to Yadadri temple as CM since 2014 and spent over Rs 1,200 crore on the renovation works of temple so far.

Until recently, KCR was talking about inaugurating Yadadri temple complex in a grand manner by holding various religious rituals from March 21 and 28. He talked about inviting President Ramnath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Ministers and Governors of various states for Yadadri reopening. KCR also talked about holding ‘mother of all yagams” Maha Sudarshana Yagam with 1,048 yagam mandaps and 4,000 rithviks etc under the aegis of Chinna Jeeyar Swamy.

But suddenly KCR became silent on Yadadri inauguration as March 21 is fast approaching. Speculations are rife in political circles that KCR has decided not to invite President or PM or anyothers. Now KCR does not want any hungama at Yadadri. KCR wants to keep this a low key affair. Only KCR will attend and inagurate the temple. KCR reportedly postponed even Maha Sudarshana Yagam.

Why this sudden change? It is rumoured in TRS circles that it is the direct fallout of his ongoing fight with BJP and Modi. The recent visit of Modi to Jeeyar Swamy’s ashram and Swamy praising Modi as “Lord Rama” led to KCR distancing himself from Jeeyar Swamy also. All these factors are going to impact the Yadadri temple grand inaugural programmes, they say.

PM’s remarks bring Telangana sentiment to the fore again

1

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks in Parliament on the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh has triggered a political slugfest in Telangana with both the ruling TRS and opposition Congress going all out to cash in on the sentiment.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which has succeeded in sustaining the Telangana sentiment ever since forming the first government in the state in 2014, was quick to seize the opportunity.

From seeking an apology from Narendra Modi to staging protests across the state to moving a privilege motion against him in the Parliament, the TRS went into an overdrive to capitalize.

The Prime Minister’s comments gave an opportunity to the TRS to step up its attack on him for the alleged bias against Telangana and thus corner BJP’s state unit which has been trying to project itself as the only viable alternative.

Since the Prime Minister had made the comments while lashing out at Congress over the manner in which it bifurcated Andhra Pradesh, the opposition party too tried to use it to its advantage. While slamming Modi for his remarks, the Congress leaders tried to project this as a proof in support of their claim that the credit for carving out Telangana state goes to their party.

Both the TRS and Congress accused BJP of betraying Telangana and asked its state leaders how they will face the people of the state. Political analysts say the attacks by both the parties will make things difficult for the BJP.

The TRS is trying to derive political mileage by cornering the BJP over what it describes as an insult to people of Telangana. The Congress, while slamming BJP, is claiming Modi’s comments are an admission of the fact that it was the Congress that created Telangana.

Modi, on February 8 raked up the bifurcation issue while targeting Congress party while replying to the debate on motion of thanks to President’s Address in the Rajya Sabha. He alleged that Congress acted against the federal spirit.

“Andhra Pradesh (undivided) played an important role in the Congress forming government at the Centre, but the Congress divided the state in a hasty manner,” said Modi. “Mics were switched off and ‘mirchi’ (pepper) spray was used and there was no discussion during the passage of the bifurcation Bill,” he added.

Though he asserted that he was not against the creation of Telangana, TRS and Congress both accused him of insulting people of the state and 1,200 youth who laid down their lives for separate state.

The Prime Minister said the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government created three states (Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand) in the most peaceful manner.

Modi, during his speech in Parliament, also remarked that the two states were suffering even today because of the manner in which the Congress bifurcated Andhra Pradesh

Both the TRS and Congress leaders asked Modi to explain why Vajpayee government failed to create Telangana state though BJP had promised this before 1999 elections. “The BJP had passed a resolution at Kakinada in 1998 promising two states for one vote,” recalled TRS working president and state minister K.T. Rama Rao.

“Utterly disgraceful of you Mr Prime Minister for repeatedly insulting the decades of spirited struggle & sacrifices of the people of Telangana,” said KTR, as Rama Rao is popularly known. He also demanded that the Prime Minister apologise to people of Telangana.

The Congress leaders too reacted strongly. State Congress chief A. Revanth Reddy said if the BJP-led NDA had created Telangana state after coming to power in 1999, lives of 1,200 Telangana youth would have been saved.

“Our leader Sonia Gandhi created Telangana state despite knowing very well that this will cause political damage to the Congress party,” he said.

A day after PM’s comments, protests erupted in Telangana as ministers and legislators came on the streets to lead the charge, condemning Modi’s remarks and setting afire effigies of the BJP.

This was the second time after 2014 that TRS men staged a protest on an issue related to creation of Telangana state. Immediately after formation of Telangana on June 2, 2014, the state had observed a shutdown on a call given by TRS to protest merger of eight mandals (blocks) of Telangana with Andhra Pradesh.

“The Modi government had overnight handed over the mandals to Andhra Pradesh and also took away lower Sileru power project. Did Modi consult Telangana? Where was his federal spirit then?,” asked Telangana’s finance minister T. Harish Rao.

The TRS leaders sharpened the attacks on the Modi government for doing nothing for Telangana in the last eight years. They said he was unable to digest the fact that Telangana is developing at a rapid pace and emerging a model for the entire country despite not getting any help from the Centre.

Harish Rao pointed out that the Centre went back on all its commitments made to Telangana in Bifurcation Act. “BJP has been repeatedly betraying Telangana,” he said.

Political analysts say the PM’s comments may prove counter-productive to his own party in Telangana

“PM with his remarks on bifurcation has only disturbed the growing harmony between the people of the two Telugu states. Time and again Modi made remarks which would not let people of Andhra Pradesh forget the pain they suffered in 2014. And this time, his rhetoric is surely going to irritate people in Telangana. While BJP has limited stakes in AP, the party’s prospects in Telangana will get affected with such unsavory statements by the top leader,” said analyst Palwai Raghavendra Reddy.

He pointed out that eight years since bifurcation, both the state are trying to resolve many issues bothering administration and people of both the states. From water distribution to jobs allocation, both the state governments have been striving hard to ensure all complexities are resolved in an amicable manner. “Though the people of Andhra Pradesh believe they have been cheated by political parties, and the then union government, they seemed to be moving forward on various fronts.”

The analyst say if Prime Minister thinks Andhra Pradesh got a raw deal in 2014, he had an opportunity to correct it over the past eight years, and still has another two years to do so. “His government’s actions on Capital city/cities, Polavaram, Visakha Railway Zone, proposed Kadapa Steel Plant and many more are against the interests of AP. Instead of raking up issues which would cause more harm by dividing people, PM from his position of power must act to bring people and regions together,” said Raghavendra Reddy.

He believes that TRS and Congress in Telangana got opportunity to paint BJP as a party against the youngest state in India. “While TRS has already moved privilege motion against PM in both houses of the Parliament, we will have to see how effectively TRS and Congress will take the issue to the people,” he added.
