Too Many Mid Range Films On Aug 27 – One May Shift

0

Tollywood is back to multiple releases a week after a long Corona induced break. The success of SR Kalyana Mandapam and buzz around Paagal has given confidence to medium budget makers to go for a theatrical release before things turn to worse once again.

3 medium budget films, Sri Devi Soda Center, Ichata Vahanamulu Niluparaadu and 101 Jillala Andagadu announced their release date as August 27th. Bigwigs of the industry are of the opinion that each film will eat in to the revenue of each other and is going to be of no help to any of them if all release on the same day.

One of these films is likely to be shifted to the next week and the decision will be taken in a day or two.

Exclusive: AP Government on new Ticket Pricing GO

The revised ticket pricing GO issued by the government of Andhra Pradesh created a ruckus all over. The exhibitors of both the Telugu states are suffering as there are no big releases because of the minimal ticket prices in AP. It would be a huge risk for medium and big-budget films if screened in theatres with those prices. Several bigwigs of Telugu cinema are trying hard to meet Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy to request him about reconsidering the ticket prices.

Though the appointment was not given, some of the ministers of his cabinet met YS Jagan and discussed about the same with the Chief Minister. Advisor Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy played a key role in the discussion. YS Jagan is not favorable completely but he asked to revise the ticket prices for B and C centres. The new GO is expected to be out next week. If things are favorable, there would be notable releases in the month of September. Else, small films will continue to test their luck at the Tollywood box-office.

Hyd police file case on Dasari’s sons!

1

The Jubilee Hills police in Hyderabad filed a case against the sons of late Tollywood director, producer Dasari Narayan Rao.

A film financier Somashekhar has filed a complaint with the police stating that Dasari’s sons were threatening him when he asked them to clear loans taken by their father.

Somashekar complained that Dasari took loan of Rs 2.10 crore from him in 2012.

But Dasari died in 2017 without clearing his loan.

Later, when he approached Dasari’s sons Arun Kumar and Prabhu they agreed to clear the loan.

They too failed to clear the loan and with the involvement of few film personalities, the issue was settled for Rs 1.15 crore.

Somashekar said as part of settlement, Dasari’s sons agreed to clear Rs 1.15 crore loan out of Rs 2.10 crore loan taken by Dasari.

Somashekar stated that though he suffered Rs 1 crore loss in the settlement, he agreed to this on humanitarian grounds as Dasari died and his sons are not in a position to clear complete loan.

He complained that Dasari’s sons failed to clear even Rs 1.15 crore loan.

When he approached Dasari’s sons to clear loan recently, they threatened him with dire consequences and warned him to forget the loan.

Somashekar filed a case in Jubille Hills police station against Dasari’s sons for threatening him. The police lodged the case and started an investigation into the issue.

Three Time machine films coming in Tollywood

0

Aditya 369 happens to be one of the best films in Indian cinema made on the concept of the time machine. After years, there are three films that will be made with a similar theme. The sequel for Aditya 369 has been in discussion for the past few years. Balakrishna himself revealed that the work for the film is on and it is speculated to be titled Aditya 999. Balakrishna himself penned the script of Aditya 999 and Nandamuri Mokshagna will make his debut as an actor with this sequel. The film is expected to start rolling in 2023. Prabhas signed a film in the direction of Nag Ashwin and the shoot of the film commenced recently.

OTTs turning saviors for Tollywood producers

1

The theatres are shut for months which never happened in the past. The exhibition industry is completely shattered and the producers are suffering from the heaped-up financial strain. Several producers opted out for a direct digital release to prevent the mounting interests and end up safe. Several films featuring stars too were released directly on digital platforms and the digital release saved the producers from huge losses.

Nani’s V, Anushka’s Nishabdham and Venky’s Narappa are the prominent Telugu films that were released directly. The makers made good profits through the digital release. The real fact is that all these three films could have ended up as cost failures if released in theatres. Several small films like Dear Brother, Ek Mini Katha, Pachchis and Ardha Shathabdham headed for a digital release. The makers of all these films made handsome profits as per their investments. The audience would have turned down these films if released in theatres.

All the filmmakers made good profits because of the direct digital release. OTTs directly or indirectly turned out to be the saviors for Telugu filmmakers in these tough pandemic times. There are talks that Drishyam 2, Virata Parvam and Maestro are gearing up for direct digital release soon. It would take a couple of months for the theatres to reopen on a full-fledged note considering the current situation and the third wave of coronavirus.

Tollywood reboots: Telugu film industry jumps back into action

1

Bollywood is still cagey about restarting shooting work despite restrictions easing, but the Telugu film industry has jumped back to action with gusto. Filmmakers are picking up projects where they left off before lockdown, to try and wrap up films for release without delay.

Big films such as “Ghani”, “F3”, “Lakshya” and “Major” have entered final schedules of shoot in the month of July.

Producer D. Suresh Babu, whose film “Narappa” is now set to release digitally, explains how the team planned shoots in a way so that everyone remained safe through the first and second wave.

“When we were shooting before the first wave, there was a village five kilometres away from where we were shooting and there was news that two people had got Covid. The whole unit left overnight. We had about four days left. If you see, Venky (the film’s hero Venkatesh Daggubati) has two looks — a bearded one and one without beard. Our idea was to finish portions with the bearded get-up first and come back. But the whole unit was so scared that we cancelled the shoot,” Suresh Babu tells IANS.

He adds: “We waited through the first wave, and when normalcy was restored, we first shot portions where he had his beard. We took a break, and then started the parts where he didn’t have a beard. While we were closing up, the second wave was starting and we had bits and pieces to do, so with great caution we had to work on that.”

“The entire post production was done in the second wave. We were scared to go for background scores because those days, the cases were on a high. Things have now become better but again, we don’t know when things are going to be back to normal. One of the reasons why we decided to release it digitally is because we thought people are going to be safe at home. Why not sit and watch it at home?” Suresh Babu says.

Talking about priorities, Sharath Chandra, co-producer of the Adivi Sesh-starrer “Major”, says: “The top priority of any person is to finish the film because there is a lot of dependency on actors. People have to move out of projects and do new projects. So, I think the primary focus is to finish it. Release is something that will happen once theatres open. Of course, everyone wants to release their films when there is a safe environment.”

Actors have multiple film commitments and sometimes it is difficult to give away long dates or continuous hours of shoot to one film. In such a case, director Ramesh Verma, who is directing Ravi Teja’s next, “Khiladi”, says they make do with whichever artiste is present for shooting and let editing take care of the rest.

“We want to finish our shooting before the third wave. All films shooting have started now. We want to finish films as early as possible. If we have one actor available, we shoot with that actor and when the other actor is available, we shoot him. Then we combine the scenes in editing rooms. To finish the schedule in this pandemic, we are planning things in a different way,” says Ramesh, who recently announced the sequel to his film “Rakshasudu”.

Actress Shruti Haasan, who will soon head to Hyderabad for the shooting of her next Telugu project “Salaar”, reveals that she sped up her work at the beginning of the pandemic last year itself.

“I have been like that since Covid started. I am a producer’s daughter but I never acted like a producer’s daughter before and it was really during the pandemic that I was like ‘chalo chalo sunset se pehle yeh shot khatam kar dete hain (come on, let’s wrap up this shot before sunset)’. I just want to finish work and move on to the next thing. I want people to see my work. I have always valued my work but this phase has doubled that up in me. We’ve started realising the value of work, and the things we took for granted, like being on sets and having a film release on time,” she sums up.

Five special requests from Telangana Film Chamber

1

The members of the Telangana State Film Chamber of Commerce met Telangana Cinematography Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav with several requests post-pandemic. They submitted a memorandum to look into the requests which will help to revive the exhibition industry in Telangana. They wanted the government to allow nominal parking charges in theatres. The government of Telangana canceled the parking fees in all the theatres of the state. This turned out to be a dent in the revenue and the Film Chamber says that the parking charges have been the pillar of strength for cinema theatres for decades.

Despite theatres shutting down for months due to Covid, the Telangana Electricity Department charged Minimum Demand charges from theatres. The Telangana State Film Chamber of Commerce urged the government to wave off the minimum Demand charges which will help the exhibition sector. They also demanded a relaxation of the property tax for a period of two years as the theatres are shut for a long time. They also demanded a reduction in GST for the survival of cinema.

Unpredictable Third Wave puzzles Tollywood

0

After the restrictions are lifted in the country, the film industry reopened and the shoots are happening at a fast pace. Almost all the actors resumed the shoots of their upcoming projects. But there is no clarity about the reopening of the theatres though the governments of the Telugu states granted permission to screen films. A series of discussions are currently happening in Hyderabad between the producers and the distributors. Top producers of Telugu cinema met recently about the same. Some more meetings are planned this week.

What’s worrying so much is the third wave of coronavirus after the experts predicted that it may hit the country by the mid of August. Some of the distributors and exhibitors are not in a mood to reopen the theatres if there is a possible third wave. Screening films at this time will leave the makers in huge losses. Some of them say that the audience will not rush to theatres during these tense situations. The second wave of pandemic too is yet to calm down completely. For now, the discussions are going on and things will be finalized before this weekend.

Some of the filmmakers are keen to release the completed films as the interests are heaping up. More details awaited.

Bollywood filmmakers in the hunt for Tollywood projects

1

All the deals for Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam and SS Rajamouli’s RRR are closed. Both these films will have to perform well in Hindi and Telugu languages considering the vast theatrical market. Both these projects are in demand and the deals are closed in advance. There are several pan-Indian projects that are under shoot and the Bollywood filmmakers are in the hunt to acquire the deals for crazy Telugu projects. Karan Johar is backing Vijay Devarakonda’s Liger which is directed by Puri Jagannadh.

Tollywood filmmakers too are in plans to play safe by selling the Hindi theatrical rights. A couple of Bollywood production houses are in talks to acquire the Hindi theatrical rights of Allu Arjun’s film Pushpa. Excel Entertainment will release KGF: Chapter 2 after they made handsome profits through KGF: Chapter 1. Bollywood filmmakers are looking for films featuring young actors and release them in Hindi. If these fare well in the North Indian circuit, both the involved parties can make handsome profits.

After the films of Tollywood actors crossing millions of views on YouTube and doing exceptional on small screen, Telugu films are in demand.

Tollywood’s special requests for Telangana Government

1

The coronavirus pandemic shattered the exhibition industry completely. The film industry is the last one to resume work. Though the restrictions are lifted, the theatres in Telangana are yet to reopen. The Telangana Film Chamber is meeting on a regular basis and they are ready with several requests for the government of Telangana. Several single screens in the state are completely shut and they are converted into shopping malls and function halls.

The Telangana Film Chamber wants the government of Telangana to scrap the GO 75. The Telangana government wanted to reduce the burden on film lovers and canceled the parking fees in theatres. Now the exhibitors are requesting the Telangana government to scrap the GO as the parking fee happens to be one of the sources of revenue for them. They also want the government of Telangana to waive off the electricity charges during the pandemic season.

The theatres are shut since April and the Telangana Film Chamber is requesting the Telangana government to waive off the power charges during this season. They also have other requests of reducing the property tax and exclude the exhibition industry from GST for the next two years to save the exhibition sector. We have to wait to see how Telangana Chief Minister KCR and his government reacts to the proposals.

It’s Time We Support Theaters, Keep OTT Away: TFC

0

The key members of the Telangana Film Chamber of Commerce have come before the media and requested the producers not to go for the OTT release for their films and wait until theaters open.

“All of us got benefitted due to the theaters. Just because OTT platforms are giving rosy offers, it is not fair to dump them. We request you to wait until October 30th. If things are not normal by then, you can release your films on OTT,” the Chamber’s Hon. Secretary Suniel Narang asked.

“You should give us two three months’ time for us. We are expecting everything to open by August first week. Small producers preferring OTT due to financial issues is understandable. At least the big producers should understand. If you do not listen to us, we will take our steps,” he added.

President Murali Mohan, Vice-President Sridhar, Abhishek Nama, and other members of the chamber who spoke at the press meet also echoed a similar opinion.
