Tollywood’s Recission: Never Blame the Audience

1

The mindset of the Telugu audience has changed after the pandemic. They are selective when watching films in theatres. The trailer is deciding the fate of a film and some of the films are preferred to be watched on OTT. After two bad months, it was a great Friday for Telugu cinema. Kalyanram’s Bimbisara opened on a remarkable note from A to C centres and it ran with packed houses yesterday. The other film Sita Ramam too opened on a positive note and the film performed well in cities and multiplexes.

Both Bimbisara and Sita Ramam opened well in Telugu states and USA. The film fraternity is left in huge relief with the box-office numbers. The audience once again hinted that they are not ready to watch scrap and outdated content in theatres and they are ready to watch interesting films in theatres. Both Bimbisara and Sita Ramam are expected to have a packed weekend. Sita Ramam is the comeback for Hanu Raghavapudi and Bimbisara is the comeback for Kalyanram. Debutant Vassishta handled Bimbisara well and the shoot of the sequel will start soon.

Finally, a great day for Tollywood

1

After the summer season came to an end, Tollywood suffered badly and most of the June and July releases ended up as disasters. There was an ongoing debate that the audience are hesitant to watch films in theatres and this is a disappointing piece of news. Tollywood got its best Friday after a long gap. Kalyanram’s Bimbisara and Dulquer Salman’s Sita Ramam released today and both the films opened on a grand note. Bimbisara witnessed packed houses all over the Telugu states and Sita Ramam had mad rushes in cities and it is decent in the towns.

Both the films received positive response from the morning shows and the USA premieres. The audience are heading to theatres to watch the films. Kalyanram’s performance, Vassishta’s direction and Keeravani’s background score are appreciated. For Sita Ramam, the audience expressed that the narration is magical and Dulquer, Mrunal Thakur delivered their best. The production values of both these films have been top notch and the makers recovered most of the investments through the non-theatrical deals. Finally, a great day for Tollywood and movie lovers.

Tollywood Strike: Actors mounting Pressure

2

The Tollywood producers called off the shoots from August 1st to discuss about the possible solutions for their problems. All the active producers are meeting on a regular basis to discuss about the issues. The discussion about the OTT release cap, VPF charges and others were discussed but there is no debate about the remunerations of the stars. Though the producers are keen to slash down the paycheque of the stars, none of them will dare to discuss this with the star actors of Telugu cinema. Dil Raju who has been the face of Producers Guild for a while too is hesitant to meet the stars though he has been discussing this on a louder note in the Guild meetings.

The actors are not ready to wait for a longer time because of the strike. They are mounting pressure on their producers to resume the shoot. Balakrishna informed the same to Mythri Movie Makers. He wanted the next schedule to start immediately and the production house is left puzzled. Young actors like Nani and others too have informed their producers to solve the issues soon and resume the shoots.

The Producers Guild formed special committees to discuss about various issues and it would take some more time to get a clarity. We have to wait to see if the actors would wait for a long time or if they will mount pressure and resume the shoots.

Dil Raju bends to the pressure of Tollywood Producers

0

Tollywood producers decided to head for a strike and all the film shoots are kept on hold. Dil Raju who is a key player and active member of the Guild continued the shoot of his Telugu and Tamil bilingual Vaarasudu. Dil Raju was trolled badly and he was targeted. Some of the Tollywood producers even questioned him directly and Dil Raju decided to put the shoot of Vaarasudu on hold. Dil Raju himself today revealed that the shoots of all the films came to a halt now.

There is also a discussion that the ongoing schedule of Vaarasudu in Vizag is completed and the next schedule is shifted to Chennai. Some of the pending episodes and interior episodes will be shot in Chennai. Tollywood producers have been meeting on a regular basis to discuss about the possible solutions for the issues and challenges faced by the producers. There is no clarity about when would the shoots resume and when would the strike end.

Telugu Film Chamber comes in to support the Producers Guild

0

The Active Producers Guild met recently and held a series of meetings. They decided to stall the shoots of Telugu films starting from August 1st. The other active bodies of Telugu cinema deferred the decision and they said that the other producers would continue to shoot for their respective films. Now, the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce has decided to support the decision of the Producers Guild and announced that the shoots of Telugu films will be stalled from tomorrow. All the Telugu film shoots will be kept on hold from August 1st.

The decision about resuming the shoots will be taken after discussing about the issues and after all the resolutions are found. The remunerations of the stars, heaping up budgets and the OTT release cap are the major issues that the Telugu film industry is facing. The ticket prices in Telangana turned out to be a barrier for the footfalls in the state. All the producers should come out and discuss about the challenges and meet the stars to cut down their fees. Hope the issues will be resolved soon.

Who will be the face to question Tollywood Actors?

1

The Active Producers Guild met recently and decided to halt the film shoots from August 1st till their problems get resolved. The biggest challenge for the producers is the heaped-up remunerations of the star actors. The producers in a hurry and they formed committees to resolve various issues that are faced by the filmmakers. But the biggest puzzle here is that who will take the initiative to meet the Tollywood actors to discuss about slashing down their fat paycheques. Almost all the top and young actors of Tollywood have hiked their fees post-pandemic and this turned out to be a new stress for the producers.

This is the biggest trouble for every producer who is actively producing big-budget films. With the theatrical market shrinking, the producers are tasting huge losses. Though the producers of the Guild met recently, there was no discussion about who will turn the face of the Guild and start talks with the actors. Most of the producers have expressed about the high remunerations during the recent meeting but none of them stepped forward to lead the team of the Active Producers Guild.

Tollywood actors are tight-lipped for now and are watching the developments. Someone should take the lead soon and start discussions with the actors. The other issues are quite easy to get resolved if the actors are ready to slash down their remunerations.

Prabhas-starrer ‘Project K’ producer Ashwini Dutt refuses to toe Guild line

1

A recent meeting of the Active Telugu Film Producers’ Guild, which is led by star producer Dil Raju, decided to halt film production from August 1 until a solution is found. ‘Project K’ producer Ashwini Dutt, who has been reluctant to listen to the Dil Raju-led Producer’s Guild, has spoken on the same.

The majority of Telugu producers support Dil Raju regarding the shooting strike, but Ashwini Dutt has chosen to take a different route. Ashwini claimed recently in a media interview that Dil Raju is the one who perplexes audiences with his gimmicks. “He will first increase ticket prices before promoting the film at a reduced price”, Ashwini said.

“We won’t halt any filming, and our projects won’t follow Dil Raju’s regulations. We’ll keep shooting”, he continued. Ashwini is currently preoccupied with the ‘Project K’ production, one of the biggest Indian movies starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Amitabh Bachchan in the lead roles.

Ashwini Dutt had also spoken about ‘Project K’ on the occasion.

Active Producers Guild: Heaped up Problems

0

It is quite annoying and unfortunate to say but the majority of the producers in the Active Producers Guild are responsible for the current situation in Tollywood. Lacking unity among themselves, they called off the shoots of Telugu films starting from August 1st and are looking at possible solutions for the problems created by themselves. There was a debate that the actors will be asked to cut down their paycheque post-pandemic but it never happened. Most of the actors doubled or tripled their remunerations.

The over-enthusiastic filmmakers were not bothered and offered the quoted amounts for the actors. All these over-enthusiastic filmmakers happened to be the members of the Active Producers Guild. They were desperate of signing films instead of keeping an eye on the budgets and the business calculations. The early OTT deals had a clear toll on the theatrical market. This also collapsed the theatrical deals and distribution sector completely.

Not a single producer from Tollywood could object the hefty quotes made by the top actors. This is the real fact why the budgets have touched the skies. The actors are not bothered about the losses incurred by the producers. Most of them are taking their complete remunerations before completing half of the shoots. Some of them are blackmailing the producers that they would not dub for their part if their complete remuneration isn’t paid. Unfortunately, the producer just turned out to be a money-spinning or credit borrowing machine.

There is a reason for that too. In the past, when a producer was in talks with an actor, none of the other filmmakers would initiate discussions with the actor. But now, the filmmakers are just offering huge paycheques to sign films in advance before the discussed project commences. This is the best example for the lacking unity. Professional ethics are nowhere found these days.

One more biggest issue with the Telugu producers is that there are borrowing 95 percent of the film’s budget from financiers. A delay in the release would heap up the interests. The interests are occupying a decent portion of the budget. None of the producers are investing their money. They are relying on the amount from the financiers. Most of them aren’t aware but a section of producers are also throwing their personal expenses into their film’s budget. The expenses of their luxurious cars, parties and their family maintenance are added in the film’s budget. All these are making the film’s budget huge.

Producers like Dil Raju received a huge jolt from the distributors for Thank You. He did not receive a penny from the distributors. The situation would be similar for future projects if they fail to get the needed buzz before release. It’s high time for the producers to sit on the same table, discuss about the issues and work unitedly to stay for a long time.

Film production should be made with utmost discipline in the coming days considering all these factors. Else, Telugu producers will face many more problems in the coming future and longevity for a production house vanishes completely.

Telugu Cinema in Confusion like Never Before

Say it a competition or in a mad rush to produce films with stars, the Tollywood producers are not much bothered about the budget calculations. Most of them without any commitment from stars have been offering huge advances. Right from the actors, actresses to the character artists, everyone hiked their fee after the pandemic. The non-theatrical rights too are fetching huge prices but the theatrical market is shrinking. Without a discipline, the digital rights are sold and the early deals crushed the theatrical market completely. Most of the audience are habitual of watching films at home instead of walking to theatres. Telugu cinema is glorious at the best but the Producers are suffering badly to bail out their projects.

The taste and mindset of the audience has changed completely. If the trailer and the songs are impressive, they are preferring to watch films in theatres. Else, the stars too are unable to pull the audience to the theatres. At this time, the Producers Guild met to discuss about their further steps to save themselves and cut down the heaped-up expenses and budgets. The Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce and the Telugu Producers Council announced that there would be no strike but the Active Producers Guild is heading for a strike from August 1st.

The dailywage workers, technicians and others are left puzzled about what exactly is happening in Tollywood. While some of the makers are heading for a strike, other bodies announced that there isn’t any strike from August 1st. For now, Tollywood is surrounded by confusion and hope the film industry gets back to track soon with all the issues getting resolved.

Producers Guild forms a Cost Cutting Committee

1

With the increasing budgets and heaping up interests, the Active Telugu Film Producers Guild met yesterday to discuss about their further course of action. The Producers Guild decided to put all the film shoots on hold starting from August 1st till all the issues are resolved. “Post-pandemic, with the changing revenue situations and increasing costs, it has become important for the producers to discuss all the issues we are facing as a community of filmmakers. It is our responsibility to better the ecosystem and ensure that we are releasing our films in a healthy environment. In this regard, all the producer members of the Guild have voluntarily decided to withhold the shootings from August 1st 2022 to sit in discussions until we find workable resolutions” told the official statement from the Producers Guild.

A ‘Cost Cutting Committee’ was formed and the Committee will analyse where the waste is much. The Committee will also frame some strict guidelines about cost cutting during production. There would be discussion about the heaped up remunerations and how to discuss this with the star actors and directors. UV Vamshi, Sudhakar Cherukuri, S Naga Vamsi and others are a part of the Cost Cutting Committee that will meet to discuss and find the solutions for the problems. Frequent meetings will be held by the Guild members to lock the strict guidelines and follow them in the future.

Telugu Film Chamber proposes new Rules

1

Telugu Film Chamber proposes new Rulesarly windows for OTT release. They have proposed

Telugu Film Chamber met to discuss about various issues and hurdles in Tollywood. The major discussion was about the hiked ticket prices, OTT window and some strict implementations about the same. All the small budget films can have a OTT release gap of four weeks. All the medium and big-budget films should have their digital release only after 10 weeks from the theatrical release. There has been a debate going on about the ticket prices. The prices are fixed in Andhra Pradesh and new GOs are issued for big-budget films.

In Telangana, the Film Chamber proposed new ticket prices. The prices for multiplexes and single screens are Rs 125 and Rs 100 in A and B Centres for small budget films. For medium-budget films, the prices are Rs 177 and Rs 112 in A and B Centres. For big-budget films, the prices are said to be Rs 295 and Rs 177 in multiplexes and single screens. When it comes to C centres, the prices for small budget films are Rs 125 and Rs 70 respectively and for medium budget projects, the proposed prices in C centres are Rs 177 and Rs 100. Tollywood Producers lost the Production Grip

1

The budgets of Telugu films reached new heights and the producers are staring at huge losses because of the heaped-up budgets. Most of the producers are relying on investments that are brought for interests. A delay in the shoot or the release is heaping up the interests of their films. The star actors and directors are charging huge after the non-theatrical rights are fetching huge deals. The producers are unable to control the remunerations of the stars. The expenses of the staffers of the actors and the actresses too reached new heights.

Several actors and actresses have been dumping these expenses on the producers. Several star heroines are demanding close to Rs 1 lakh per day for the expenses of their staff members. This doesn’t happen in Bollywood. It is our producers who welcomed such moves and they turned out to be a new headache for the producers. The remunerations of the character actors too are hiked by four times and the other expenses reached new heights.

The foreign shoots are a real nightmare for the producers as the wastage is quite high. Most of the producers are not taking a hold of the film’s budget as they are busy with multiple projects. The corruption in the production expenses too increased badly in the recent years. Its high time for the producers to be focused and cut down the wastage to survive for a longer time.

Bollywood targets Tollywood Directors

0

The mindset of the Indian audience has changed badly after the pandemic. Most of them are watching realistic and nativity-based mass entertainers. The super success of Akhanda, Pushpa: The Rise, RRR and KGF: Chapter 2 are the best examples. Bollywood continued to deliver duds over the past few months. Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera released on Friday and the film is heading towards one of the biggest disasters ever. Most of the top filmmakers are now in touch with South film directors and especially Telugu directors.

Almost all the young and talented directors received calls from the top Bollywood production houses. Karan Johar is keen to work with Telugu directors. SRK’s Red Chillies Entertainment, Rajkumar Hirani Films, Pooja Entertainment, Sanjay Leela Bhansali Films, and Sajid Nadiadwala Entertainment have staged a hunt for the right scripts and directors from South. They are keen on collaborating with Bollywood heroes and these projects will be directed by Telugu or Tamil directors. All the talented Telugu directors are occupied with films and they have no time to work on a Bollywood project for now.

Exclusive updates from the Tollywood Producers’ Meeting

Almost all the top producers of Telugu cinema met yesterday to discuss about the heaping up budgets and how to bring things to a control. The producers of Telugu cinema decided to put the shoots on hold from August 1st. The producers also decided not to start the shoots of new films till things are resolved. The most discussed is about the remunerations of the stars that touched the skies and about the cap of digital release. Here are the updates of the meeting:

Most of the stars are taking a huge remuneration which is turning a stress for the producers. The filmmakers are in plans to slash down the remunerations and offer profits to the stars after the film’s release.

The theatrical revenues have come down drastically and the producers are incurring losses if the films are not doing well in theatres. The major reason happens to be the early OTT deals. All the agreements made after August 1st will see the digital release only after 50 days of the theatrical release.

The expenses on the sets have increased drastically and the producers discussed how to cut down the expenses. The remunerations of the character actors too increased badly. Every small actor has been demanding a caravan. The actresses have been demanding expenses for their staff along with accommodation and daily wages for the staff members.

Some of the actors are not turning up to the sets till 11 AM. The producers also discussed about the timings on the sets and how to reduce the number of working days.

Some of the actresses have been demanding outside food and the producers argued that the actress has to bear the expenses if she is not willing to have the provided food.

Several actors have been imposing their personal expenses on the producers. They discussed about how to avoid these expenses of stars. This is burning the pockets of the producers.

The interests for the films have been turning a huge stress for the producers. If the film’s release is delayed, it would be an extra burden for the makers.

There are also discussions about the hero and director bearing partial losses if the producer loses big money.

For now, there is a healthy discussion among the producers about cost cutting in the coming future. The shoots of Telugu films will come to a halt from August 1st.

Tollywood Producers’ Crucial Meeting about Strike

Tollywood’s market broke all the barriers and reached new heights. The entire Indian cinema has been looking towards Telugu films and technicians. At the same time, the remunerations of the stars, directors and technicians touched the skies. After the pandemic, the daily wage workers and others hiked their fees after they headed for a strike. This turned out to be an extra burden for the producers. With a lot of stress, the producers decided to head for a strike. Several producers met yesterday and discussed about their further course of action.

The producers are meeting today once again to discuss about the possible solutions and what to implement in the coming days. They will discuss about the heaped remunerations of stars and how to control the budgets on the sets. A decision on heading for strike too will be discussed. Some of the producers argue that the interests would heap up if the shoots are kept on hold for all those that are half done. The theatre industry is struggling like never before. For the first time in the recent times, the producers are heading for a strike. Hope all the issues will get resolved soon.

Tollywood shattered due to the Rains

1

The continuous rains in the Telugu states created much havoc all over. The rains are quite severe in Telangana and red, orange alerts are issued for most of the districts. The last weekend releases failed to impress the audience and the theatrical run of Vikram came to an end. Most of the theatres remained shut from Monday because of the minimal footfalls all over. Happy Birthday opened on a low note and the mixed talk shattered the theatrical run of the film. Most of the theatres screening the film too remained shut because of the poor numbers.

Most of the exhibitors decided to shut the theatres instead of screening films without the audience. The rains are also having an impact on Ram’s upcoming movie The Warrior. The online sales are not completely encouraging for the film. The audience are not much interested to watch films during this season because of the heavy rains. Films like Thank You and Ramarao On Duty too are lacking buzz. The Warrior is releasing tomorrow and the film is carrying decent expectations. We have to wait to see how the film fares at the box-office during this season.

Tollywood producers lost control over Film Budgets

1

Gone are the days when producers had a strong hold over the film production and the budgets. With the remunerations of the star actors and directors touching skies and production costs heaping up, the film budgets could not be controlled. Tollywood producers are worried about the wastage on the sets on a regular basis that could not be controlled. Though the producers are planning strict budgets, they are unable to complete the films on the proposed budgets. Some of the actors are throwing their personal expenses on the producers and the makers are not daring to oppose.

The number of working days are increasing. The remunerations of the staff members for the actors and the actresses are costing a bomb. Some of the actresses have been demanding separate caravans for their staffers and rooms in star hotels during the outdoor shoots. For star heroes, the total staff members are close to 15 and their expenses, flight tickets, and accommodation has to be borne by the producers. There is no control over the final budget till the shoot completes.

With the non-theatrical rights fetching good prices, the producers are not much bothered about the budgets and the heaping interests. Else, most of the producers of this generation would have vanished.

USA Shoots coming to a Halt

0

Several Indian films are shot abroad and USA happens to be one of the best countries for film shoots. But there are lot of restrictions when issued visas for film stars and crew members. After the pandemic, the nation is focused on student and work visas. There are no slots available for visas for film shoots this year. Balakrishna’s next directed by Gopichand Malineni was planned to be shot in USA but with no visa slots available, the makers shifted the shoot to Turkey.

Several films that had plans to shoot in USA are now picking up European countries or London. Some of the European countries are also offering incentives for film shoots to boost up tourism and the makers are scouting locales in Europe than in USA. It is unclear when the US Embassy issues visa slots for the shoots of Indian films.

One more shock for Tollywood from OTT Platforms

1

After the coronavirus pandemic, the theatres are back to track but a section of the audience are preferring to watch films on OTT platforms rather than in theatres. The digital platforms offered hefty prices during the lockdown time and bought the rights. Some of the biggies headed for a direct digital release. But the deals are slashed after the theatres reopened. Several producers are holding talks with OTT platforms for a direct digital release. The OTT platforms have now changed plans.

A top producer who has four small budget films ready approached a couple of top digital platforms to ink a deal for a direct digital release. But these platforms wanted the films to have a theatrical release first. The quote for the digital rights too was quite low. The producer was left surprised as he wanted to head for a direct digital release to save the promotional budget on these films. Netflix signed the digital deal contract for Virata Parvam on a similar agreement. It was then the makers released the film in theatres.

All the digital platforms are now signing contracts after the producer agrees to a theatrical release. The amount for the digital deals will be settled only after the theatrical run of the film comes to an end. This comes as a huge shock for the producers who are aiming at a direct OTT release by skipping a theatrical release.
