Theatrical Revenue turns Crucial for Tollywood Producers

0

After the pandemic, Indian cinema witnessed massive changes. There is a huge demand for the non-theatrical rights and the digital giants started shelling out big money for the films that are featuring stars. The star actors too hiked their fee which has turned out to be a stress for the producers. Most of the top Tollywood actors are also demanding a share in the profits. The producers could not raise their voices and are left speechless. They are bending down to the demands of the actors.

The film’s fate is now dependent on the theatrical revenue. If the film is a hit, the producers are minting money. Else, they are staring at huge losses. The distributors too are not in the mood to take risks and are releasing films on a distribution basis. The entire risk lies on the producer because of the drastic changes and the theatrical revenue is deciding the fate of the producers. Small films like Baby and Samajavaragamana brought huge profits for the producers than several biggies that featured top stars.

The producers have to be extra cautious before picking up the scripts and teaming up with stars. The entire risk falls on the shoulders of the producer.

Film Celebrities Eye Debut in 2023 Telangana Elections

1

As the 2023 Telangana assembly elections draw near, a wave of film celebrities is gearing up to try their hand at politics. Some intend to step into the political arena by contesting, while others focus on rallying behind their preferred leaders. Here’s a closer look.

The Indian political landscape has witnessed the emergence of numerous movie stars, particularly in Telugu states, where several film personalities have already made their mark. With each election, a fresh avenue opens for film celebrities to make their political debut. As per the grapevine, Rahul Sipligunj, a well-known folk and playback singer is all set to try his luck in Telangana politics. He started his career as a singer but his victory in Bigg Boss Telugu Season 3 earned him lots of fame. Then, his popularity seems to have reached the pinnacle as he performed the “Natu Natu” song on the Oscar stage. The Congress party has reportedly approached Rahul, offering him an MLA seat. It is known thing that Rahul comes from a backward caste (Nayi Brahmin) and comes from a very humble background. Rahul’s apparent interest in the offer has sparked attention.

In a similar vein, film producer Dil Raju appears to have a political itch, though he has his sights set on the upcoming general elections of 2024. Following his statement that he could become a Member of Parliament regardless of party affiliation, multiple political parties have shown keen interest in his potential candidacy. Dil Raju, however, remains tight-lipped, preferring to await the right moment. Speculation suggests he might consider contesting an MP seat in the 2024 elections if he feels confident about his chances of victory.

The trend is not confined to Telangana alone; come 2024, Andhra Pradesh might also witness an influx of celebrities participating in or backing electoral campaigns. The political sphere awaits these debutants, with the outcome of their political forays yet to be determined. The unfolding elections will reveal the extent of success these new entrants achieve in the realm of politics.

Telugu Cinema: High remuneration and Low production values

1

In recent times, it is observed that some Telugu films are made with low production values despite spending a bomb on the total making of the film. Citrics blame it on the high remunerations of the star heroes that is resulting in such cheap quality of the movie. BRO movie becomes another recent example in this trend. Details as follows.

Record remuneration of Pawan:

Power Star Pawan Kalyan is sailing on two boats at this moment. He is actively campaigning for his Janasena party and at the same time adjusting call sheets for some movies and admitting that he needs to act in movies to run the party. It is known news that Pawan is commanding a substantial remuneration for his roles nowadays. In fact, he openly announced that he received 44 crores of remuneration for 21 days of his work for this film. With a significant portion of the total budget allocated to the star’s remuneration, makers seem to have left with lesser funds for the film making which is clearly reflecting in low production values of BRO movie . Pawan’s last three films seem to have same problem.

Cheap production values criticised:

“Bro The Avatar,” also featuring Sai Dharam Tej, is written by Trivikram and directed by Samuthirakani. Though this movie is appreciated for the different concept by common audience and for Pawan’s vintage look by his fans, both the fans and common audiences are criticising the cheap production values of the movie. Especially the CG work of this supposedly fantasy movie is receiving backlash from the viewers.

Not just Pawan films:

While the latest example for this phenomenon is BRO movie, this problem is not confined to only Pawan Kalyan films. Except the films of a few directors like Rajamouli and Sukumar that are made on Pan India scale, most of the Telugu films are facing this same problem. Notably, none of the Telugu films that are released in last one year got appreciation for high production values. At best, those films got the remark that the production values are adequate. Obviously, almost 70% of the budget of such films spent on remunerations of artists and technicians.

It’s essential to find a balance between adequately compensating deserving talents and ensuring top-notch production quality. Exploring innovative ways to optimize budget allocation while maintaining superior standards will be crucial for future Telugu projects to leave a positive impact on audiences.

Tollywood impacted badly because of Heavy Rains

1

Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej starrer BRO is releasing this Friday. The openings are quite normal becaue of the rain alert. There are no new releases this weekend except BRO. The result completely depends on the word of mouth. Even the film shoots of several Telugu films got canceled because of the heavy rains. Top Production House Slammed for Uncleared Dues

0

A top production and distribution house which completed 50 films as producers in the recent years has been busy with several projects. A big-budget film is in the making and is slated for release next year from this production house. The production house is yet to clear the dues of over a crore for the Fighters Union for the recent biggie. The dues are yet to be cleared since two months. The latest schedules of two films that are to be produced by this production house are kept on hold as the action episodes are called off. The Fighters Union decided not to work for the films produced by this top production house till the dues are cleared.

This is a huge embarrassment for the production house and the incident took place two weeks ago. The producer is yet to clear the dues even after the incident took place. This became the topic of discussion in the production house and across the Tollywood circles. With each production house backing several films, there has been a severe financial stress across Tollywood. It is a matter of balancing things and clearing the dues instead of landing in the news.

Tollywood producer held for drug peddling in Hyderabad

1

Cyberabad police have arrested Tollywood film producer Sunkara Krishna Prasad Chowdary allegedly for drug peddling, officials said on Wednesday.

The police seized 90 sachets containing 82.75 grams of cocaine, nearly Rs 2 lakh in cash, a car and four mobile phones from his possession.

Officials said that personnel of Special Operations Team (SOT Madhapur) and Rajendranagar police arrested Chowdary on Tuesday when he was peddling drugs near Kismatpur X Roads under the limits of Rajendranagar police station.

According to police, Chowdary is native of Bonakal Mandal in Khammam district of Telangana. He completed his B.Tech (Mechanical) and later worked as Director (Operations) in Indian Institute of Aeronautical Engineering and Technology at Pune.

In 2016, he left the job and entered the film industry.

He was the producer of Kabali movie in Telugu. He was also the distributor for several Telugu and Tamil movies including Sardar Gabbarsingh, Seetamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu and Kanitan (Arjun Suravaram), but he did not get the expected profits.

Chowdary later moved to Goa and started OHM Club there.

According to police, the accused used to consume drugs with friends and celebrities coming from Hyderabad to his club in Goa. Due to loss in business, he returned to Hyderabad in April 2023. While coming to Hyderabad, he procured 100 sachets of cocaine from a Nigerian, Petit Ebuzer alias Gabrial, a resident of Goa and absconding in a drug peddling case.

He allegedly used 10 sachets for self-consumption and for selling to his friends.

On Tuesday, he was apprehended while he was allegedly trying to sell cocaine.

Chowdary has been booked under Sections 21(b) read with 8(C) of NDPS Act.

Tollywood biggies in Financial Stress

0

The digital and non-theatrical rights of Indian films have seen a huge rise in recent years post Covid. All the star actors have hiked their fees because of this and the budgets of Telugu films reached new heights. The makers are pocketing big through the digital rights even before the release of their films. But there is a huge vacuum because of the substantial hike in the rights. The makers of Project K are quoting huge for the digital rights (including all languages) and digital giants like Amazon Prime and Netflix are in deep shock. This is the biggest ever quote in the history of Indian cinema.

The digital giants are not in a mood to acquire the digital rights of Project K for such high prices. DVV Danayya who is bankrolling Pawan Kalyan’s OG is said to have quoted a huge price for the digital deal and the digital platform decided to step back from the deal. The same is the case with the digital rights of Pushpa: The Rule. The makers are quoting very huge prices. Though these deals will be closed at a later date, the digital giants are not ready to shell out huge amounts. The makers will have to crack the deals at the earliest so that they would receive hefty advances from the digital platforms and these amounts will help the makers to complete the shoots of biggies.

For now, there is a stress among the producers of biggies because of the overhyped digital deals.

IT Officials Digging On Actors’ Remunerations

1

It is a known news that, IT and ED officers are conducting raids on Mythri Movie Makers’ office and Sukumar’s house and office. As per sources, IT officers got key details about the actors’ remunerations paid by Mythri. Usually, Heroes take some part of the remuneration in black money to avoid the burden of paying taxes.

Mythri Movie Makers is doing some big films, Allu Arjun’s Pushpa: The Rule and they also have signed Prabhas for Siddharth Anand’s film for an action-adventure. The production house has already paid some part of the remuneration as advances for their actors and IT officials have now got every detail of it. We have to see how this information going to affect our actors.

Income Tax officials conducted raids on the production house for getting more foreign funds in a span of six months and also for not being clear with GST bills. This time these raids are going to affect all the actors who took their salary from Mythri unaccounted.

Tollywood young actors shocking Filmmakers

1

With the digital market blooming up for stars and the promising actors, several Tollywood actors have hiked their fees for their upcoming projects. After one successful film, young Tollywood actors are taking multiple advances even before the projects are getting materialized. Actors like Vishwak Sen, Naveen Polishetty and Siddhu Jonnalagadda have signed multiple films. Vishwak Sen and Siddhu are charging Rs 5-6 crores per film which is high. The makers will make profits only if these films end up as super hits in theatres. Vishwak Sen lost big money on Das Ka Dhamki which was produced by his home banner. He also released the film on his own.

After delivering a series of flops, Kiran Abbavaram is in demand. He has more than half a dozen projects signed and some of them are in shooting mode. He has three more releases this year. With the digital rates creeping up, the actors are demanding big numbers and the producers are bowing to their demands without opposing their high paycheques. Most of the filmmakers are in shock with the demands of the actors. Some others are not hesitant to pay high amounts for the actors. They are just desperate of doing films without calculating the market potential of the actor.

Huge scarcity for Music Composers in Tollywood

0

Thaman and Devi Sri Prasad emerged as the top music composers of Telugu cinema. They are not reachable for mid-range films as they are charging huge money per film. Tamil composer Anirudh is busy with a bunch of Tamil films and he has no time for Telugu projects. Mickey J Meyer is residing in USA and he is quite selective. Gopi Sundar lost track because of unknown reasons and he is struggling to get back to the track. Bheems delivered super hit tunes for Ravi Teja’s Dhamaka. He is currently signing Telugu films. Telugu filmmakers are relying on young composers from neighboring languages. Nani roped in Santosh Narayanan for Dasara.

Malayalam music director Hesham Abdul Wahab is working for two films in Telugu. Kantara music director is busy with a couple of Telugu films. Tamil youngster Leon James is working on multiple Telugu films after the success of Ori Devuda. Sricharan Pakala and Suresh Bobbili are the only young Telugu composers who are working on multiple films. There is a requirement for young Telugu talent here. There are lot of medium and small-budget Telugu films in making and the makers are finding it hard to find to finalize composers in their budgets.

In a year of celebrations, Tollywood mourned the loss of legends

0

The year 2022 saw the Telugu film industry losing some of its biggest stars. The deaths of superstar Krishna and ‘rebel star’ Krishnam Raju came as big blows to Tollywood, and the end of the year brought the news of the passing of veteran actors Kaikala Satyanarayana and Chalapathi Rao.

The year began on tragic note with the death of actor-producer Ramesh Babu, elder brother of popular actor Mahesh Babu, in January.

Ramesh Babu was known for films such as Bazaar Rowdy, Mugguru Kodukulu and others. After his retirement from acting in 1997, he had become a producer.

April saw the death of three veteran Tollywood personalities. Director Sarath passed away at the age of 74 after battling cancer. Sarath, who made his directorial debut in 1986 with Chadastapu Mogudu, made over 20 films in his career. He predominantly worked with actors Nandamuri Balakrishna and Suman.

While he delivered superhits such as Vamshanikokkadu, Sulthan, Peddannayya, and Vamshoddharakudu, he directed Suman in films Bava Bavamaridi, Peddinti Alludu, and Chinna Alludu.

The same month, veteran actor M. Balayya passed away at the age of 94. He had acted in more than 300 films and was popular for playing the role of elderly and other important roles in several super hit movies.

Veteran director Tatineni Rama Rao’s death came as another loss to Tollywood. He passed away in Chennai at the age of 84.

He had started his career in the film industry as an assistant director and made his directorial debut with Navarathri (1966), starring Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Savitri in the lead roles. He directed more than 65 films in Telugu and Hindi.

He directed blockbusters such as Brahmachari (1966), Manchi Mitrulu (1969), Jeevana Tarangalu (1973), Dorababu (1974), Yamagola (1977), Anuraga Devatha (1982) and Pachchani Kapuram (1985).

In September, Tollywood lost legendary actor U. V. Krishnam Raju. He passed away the age of 83. Known as the ‘rebel star’ of Telugu cinema, he was the uncle of popular actor Prabhas.

In a career spanning 50 years, Krishnam Raju acted in more than 180 films. He was also a recipient of five Filmfare south awards as well as three Nandi awards. His most famous works include Jeevana Tarangalu, Krishnaveni, and Bhakta Kannappa among others.

Raju served as the Union Minister of state in various ministries in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government between 2000 and 2002. He was elected to the Kakinada and Narasapuram constituencies in the 12th and 13th Lok Sabha on BJP ticket.

In November, Tollywood suffered a huge loss with the death of legendary actor Krishna. He died of cardiac arrest at the age of 79.

Ghattamaneni Siva Rama Krishna Murthy or Superstar Krishna, as he was popularly known, acted in more than 350 films in a career spanning five decades. He also produced and directed a few films.

Father of actor Mahesh Babu, Krishna was credited with introducing many new trends in Tollywood.

He is known for many landmark movies like ‘Alluri Seetharama Raju’, which was the first cinemascope movie in Tollywood, ‘Eenadu’ (1982), first Eastman colour film and ‘Simhasanam’ (1986), the first 70 mm film.

The superstar founded Padmalaya Studio in 1970 and produced some highly successful movies.

The superstar was reported to be depressed since the death of his wife Indira Devi in September. Early this year, he lost his elder son Ramesh Babu.

Considered close to former Prime Minister Rahiv Gandhi, Krishna joined the Congress party in 1984. He was elected to Lok Sabha from Eluru in 1989 but lost the election in 1991 from the same constituency. After Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, Krishna distanced himself from politics

He received several awards including NTR national award in 2003. In 2009, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan for his contributions to Indian cinema.

The last month of the year saw Tollywood losing two more veteran actors. Kaikala Satyanarayana passed away on December 23 at the age of 87. Known for his roles as a villain and character artiste, he acted in over 750 films. In a career spanning 60 years, he worked with over 200 directors.

A close friend of former Chief Minister N. T. Rama Rao, he was elected to Lok Sabha from Machilipatnam in 1996 on the ticket of Telugu Desam Party (TDP). He later quit politics.

Even before Tollywood could recover from this shock, another veteran actor Tammareddy Chalapathi Rao passed away on December 25. He died of cardiac arrest at the age of 78.

Known for his comic and villainous roles, he acted with three generations of top stars in a career spanning over five decades. He acted more than 600 films.

Chalapathi Rao made his debut in 1966 with ‘Ghodachari 116’. He acted in supporting roles with leading actors like N. T. Rama Rao, Krishna, Nagarjuna, Chiranjeevi and Venkatesh. He also produced a few films.

Ten pan-Indian films from Tollywood in 2023

1

SS Rajamouli opened doors for pan-Indian cinema and several South Indian films like RRR, Pushpa: The Rise, KGF, Karthikeya 2, Kantara and others minted gold at the North Indian box-office. Bollywood is a vast market when compared to the regional cinema. At the same time, the release expenses and the publicity costs are quite high which is making many to take a back step. Tollywood has lined up several films for a pan-Indian release in 2023. Prabhas is a pan-Indian star and he would test his luck next year with Adipurush and Salaar. Pawan Kalyan too is in plans to release Hari Hara Veera Mallu and Sujeeth’s film across all the Indian languages.

Ram Charan and Shankar’s film would be massive and the film will head for a record release. Koratala Siva’s film would be the next outing of NTR after RRR and the film will also head for a pan-Indian release. Allu Arjun made his mark in Bollywood with Pushpa: The Rise. The sequel starts rolling soon and the film will release in December 2023. Nani’s Dasara, Akhil’s Agent and HanuMan are the other big releases from Tollywood for the year 2023. Sankranthi 2023: Five films in Race

0

Sankranthi 2023 too is expected to be big like every year. Two veteran Tollywood actors Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna are all set to test their luck during the season with their respective films Waltair Veerayya and Veera Simha Reddy. Vijay’s Vaarasudu is backed by top producer Dil Raju and the film too will get a good release. But before the potential of Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna, Vijay is not a big star. Everyone predicted a triangular fight between the films and all these films will have to share the screens during the holiday season.

Popular US distributor Radhakrishna Entertainments acquired the Telugu theatrical rights of Ajith’s film Thunivu and the film too will release across the Telugu states. Though the film will not get enough number of screens, Thunivu has to share some of the screens. UV Creations is backing a small film Kalyanam Kamaneeyam and Santosh Shoban played the lead role. The film directed by debutant Anil too is releasing during the Sankranthi season. UV Creations holds a good number of screens in AP and the film too will have to share the screens along with other Sankranthi releases. A more clarity on the exact release dates is expected in a week.

Analysis: Tollywood in the Biggest Stress

0

Tollywood has been shining with so many super hits post-pandemic when compared to the other film industries. South Indian films have even proved the potential of Indian cinema and they fared well across the North Indian circuits. Lot of Telugu films also ended up as disasters after the taste of the audience changed after the pandemic. There is a lot of vacuum in the Telugu film industry going on currently. A lot of money is struck because of the poor performance of small and medium-budget films. Several financiers are not ready to lend finances for small and big films considering the reputation, success rate and the track record of the producers. Telugu cinema is faring well even without stars and the financiers are following a new strategy now. They are quite cautious about lending finances for the big-budget films and those with stars.

More than ten regular and top production houses of Tollywood are left in financial stress as per our exclusive news This is because of multiple projects in hand and the financial vaccuum that is created in the market. The financiers too kept a close and keen watch on the budgets, and remunerations. They are ready to lend out a safe bet considering various aspects instead of shelling out huge money. Acharya and Liger taught a lot of lessons to financiers, producers and distributors. Tollywood distributors too are not ready to pay huge advances or release the films on NRA basis. There would be a drastic change in Telugu cinema very soon. The producer will have to face the burden and bear the loss if he has a half boiled product.

Tollywood directors camping in Mumbai

0

Indian cinema witnessed drastic changes and regional films of Telugu and Kannada are currently dominating all the languages. Bollywood is currently in a disastrous phase and none of the recent films minted money. Even the top stars are left embarrassed by the theatrical numbers. Several top filmmakers are currently in a hunt for the Telugu directors after the debacles of Bollywood biggies.
