In VFX We Trust: Rest is incidental

The release dates of almost all major films have been rescheduled. Not by days or weeks, but by months, and, in one case, even by a year! The reason is something never heard or imagined before! Special Effects aka VFX!

Our filmmakers cannot imagine a film without VFX; story and screenplay be damned. The building of a film with a plausible story and weaving characters around it are a thing of the past. No wonder, films are flopping left right and centre. The industry strongly believes in the ‘Have star, will travel’ philosophy. Alas, what comes across is that the stars the filmmakers count on are well past their best before date.

Yes, stars made film run and succeed big time. In my lifetime, I have seen two super stars, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan, both delivering multiple hits back to back. They could do that because their films were backed by storytelling and the musical score that you carried back home from the cinema.

Then, there were also other major stars such as Dharmendra, Rajendra Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Jeetendra and Rishi Kapoor. They all delivered more hits than flops. And, when the time came, they took a break. They didn’t force themselves on the audience. They came back to do roles more suited to their age.

Film stars today refuse to come to terms with their age. They want to continue to do the youthful roles, the kind they made their mark in. But, a 50-plus Shah Rukh can’t be accepted playing the same lover boy, nor can Salman be as effective in action films as he was some years back. It is the same for others.

The actors insist on sticking to roles that ensured their stardom, so the producers turn to VFX for a way out. VFX works on their aged face and bodies to make them look younger. The rest of the movie may or may not need
VFX, but that is immaterial. On a computer, the experts can do it, erase the signs of aging from a star’s face, and enhance his muscles, or even make him create his two versions, like in the Shah Rukh film, ‘Fan’.

Mythological films had extensive special effects and they were all achieved within the studio floors with the help of the cinematographer’s wizardry. How do you think the viewers could watch Bajrangbali fly or Lord Shiva float in the blue skies? The viewers welcomed it all with whistles and unending applause!

Or, how did they manage to make Lord Ram’s one arrow turn into a hundred in the battle against Ravan? Didn’t the films on the epics such as ‘Mahabharata’ and ‘Ramayana’ show more special effects and, more convincingly, than what is produced by table-top machines now?

Can a director make a double-role film today without special effects? I don’t think he will even contemplate it! And, to think that double role films came into existence ages ago and provided extra thrill to the audience.

I remember my first such film was Bimal Roy’s ‘Apradhi Kaun?’. The next was, of course, Shakti Samanta’s ‘China Town’ with Shammi Kapoor playing two roles; it inspired films such as ‘Don’ and a few others.

A lot many films released recently with mainly VFX as the main attraction have cost huge sums but failed with the audience. Increasingly, a number of filmmakers spend more years working on special effects than they do shooting a film. Does it work? No!

Yet, for everything, from credit titles to scenes with animals, a maker now depends on special effects. Films with animals have to get clearances, so scenes involving them need to be generated with the help of VFX. That isn’t required for the rest of the film. A famous filmmaker had once said that a movie is actually made on the editing table. Present-day makers seem to believe that the computer desk can work just as effectively.

They have become too dependent on special effects. Not only is this a costly affair but also time-consuming. If one thinks about it, just the exercise of making the hero look young adds to the cost by over a crore! Yet, the hero’s younger look neither convinces the viewer, nor makes the film run.

The recent release, ‘Brahmastra’, was all about special effects. The film took seven years for its VFX, which
was completed just a day before its release. The costs were mounting so much that the VFX company was brought in as a producer and given share in the revenue rather than bill for the film.

When I watched a South remake in Hindi, I enjoyed it. When I watched the original of the remake, I liked it even better. So far, Hindi films got away with whatever special effects they worked on. Post ‘Baahubali’, though, there has been a regular flow of South-dubbed films releasing in the Hindi circuits, all loaded with special effects. And, to say the least, their special effects are superlative.

There were comparisons and the Hindi films emerged as much inferior compared to recent South hits — ‘RRR’, ‘KGF: Chapter 2’, ‘Ponniyin Selvan-1’ and ‘Kantara’. Against these, we have had movies such as ‘Shamshera’, ‘Runway 34’, ‘Samrat Prithviraj’, ‘Brahmastra’, ‘Ram Setu’, and so one, which used VFX extensively, but to no avail. Whatever the reason. (There was also a talk of the VFX studios picking up rejected VFX footage from Hollywood and interpolating them in films here!)

Maybe the filmmakers have zeroed in on the reasons. Now, makers of big films, who were counting on special effects for their films, have all decided to postpone the release dates, and if they have been released, they are not satisfied with the results.

‘Adi Purush’ was trolled after its teaser was out because of which the film’s release has been postponed. ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ was postponed a couple of times. The same was the case with ‘Saaho’. Rajnikanth’s ‘2.0’ was delayed by two years and the director, Shankar, was even sued by the VFX company!

The release of ‘Tiger 3’ has been pushed back to the next Diwali now. The Hrithik Roshan-starrer ‘Fighter’, which was slated for Republic Day 2023 has been postponed by exactly a year and will now be released on the Republic Day week in 2024.

VFX is not a magic wand that can make a film run. Without a story, in fact, nothing works, be it the stars, the music, or the performances (which critics today have made a habit of praising). VFX is no substitute for creativity. The director was once called the captain of the ship. VFX steers the ship now.

Does SS Rajamouli has any stake in Brahmastra?

1

SS Rajamouli came out to support Brahmastra, a big-budget Bollywood superhero trilogy. He presented the Telugu version of the film and was active in the South Indian promotions of the film. There are a lot of speculations that Rajamouli invested decent money on the film for the Telugu version and he will share the profits. Some of the Bollywood web portals published the news that Rajamouli spent Rs 10 crores on the film and the promotions. This is completely untrue and baseless.

Rajamouli loved the concept of Brahmastra and he decided to promote the film. His close friend Sai Korrapati distributed the film for Andhra and Ceeded region. Rajamouli has no share or profits of the film. Brahmastra took a super strong opening but the numbers saw a decline over the weekdays. Considering the budget and the time spent, the film is a disappointment. Brahmastra is directed by Ayan Mukerji and has Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy in the lead roles.

Brahmastra turns a Relief for Bollywood

1

Ranbir Kapoor’s Brahmastra opened with packed houses across the nation and the film opened on a positive note. As per the early estimates, Brahmastra collected more than Rs 35 crores across the country and it emerged as the highest-grossed Indian film this year. Brahmastra is also a huge relief for Bollywood which is in the struggling phase. The Kashmir Files, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and Gangubhai Kathiawadi are the only hit films for Hindi cinema this year. Considering the financials involved, Brahmastra has to do exceptional business to attain the hit status.

The Boycott trend is having an impact and a section has been spreading bad about the film. Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut reviewed Brahmastra and took a dig at the director Ayan Mukerji. She called the film a disaster and posted “Everyone who called Ayan Mukerji a genius should be jailed immediately”. Brahmastra features Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy in the lead roles. Fox Star Studios and Dharma Productions produced this big-budget superhero film.

Will Brahmastra bring back the glory of Bollywood?

1

#BoycottBrahmastra was trending across the nation for over two months and this worried the makers of the film. With aggressive promotional campaign and a star-studded cast in the film, the pre-release sales and the advance bookings are quite impressive. Bollywood critics and analysts are predicting a Rs 30 crore opening for the film which never happened for a Hindi film post-pandemic. Films like The Kashmir Files, Akhanda and Karthikeya 2 had an edge at the theatrical windows as the films narrated facts about the origin of Indian Gods and their history.

Brahmastra too is all about the superpowers of the Hindu Gods. The film would get an advantage in this aspect if the content is impressive. The quality of the VFX work and the 3D effects will play a crucial role in the success of Brahmastra. With several prominent personalities like Rajamouli promoting the film, it would boost the openings of the film though the result depends on the content.

The real challenge for Brahmastra is that the content should be completely impressive. Else the film will be trolled. There is a talk about nepotism in Bollywood and Karan Johar is the major face of the topic. He is producing Brahmastra and this would turn out to be a disadvantage if the film fails to live up to the expectations. The makers have invested big on the film and Brahmastra should perform exceptionally well in the theatres to reach the breakeven mark. As the film is planned as a trilogy, the first installment should be a money spinner. Else the future of the other installments would land in trouble.

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are being trolled for months and their past videos are circulated across the social media circles. The duo like never in the past has been promoting Brahmastra which is also an advantage. At the end of the day, it is the content matters. All the odds will turn into an advantage for the film if the content is impressive. Hope Brahmastra clears the thirst of Hindi cinema and brings back the lost glory.

Delhi HC blocks rogue websites from streaming ‘Brahmastra Part One: Shiva’

1

Delhi High Court has restrained as many as 18 websites from illegally streaming ‘Brahmastra Part One: Shiva’, a film starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in titular roles, after allowing a suit moved by Star India in relation with copyright infringement.

Star India, in its suit, pointed out that it is an industry practice to release the film for theatrical exhibition first and then make it available for viewing on different platforms. The theatrical release of a film is the most important stage as the commercial value of a film depends on the popularity and success it achieves in this period.

“However, the rogue websites in order to make illegal gains make infringing copies and make them available for viewing, downloading, and communication to the public, almost simultaneously with the theatrical release of the film. In the past, infringing copies of several movies produced/distributed by Plaintiff were communicated to the public and made available for viewing and downloading, on various websites, within hours of the theatrical release,” they said.

In the recent order, after considering the arguments of the parties, Justice Jyoti Singh observed the investments made by the Plaintiff (Star India) in the production and promotion of the film, saying the exclusive right vested in it under the provisions of the Copyright Act.

“Defendants No. 1 to 18 and all others acting for and/or on their behalf are restrained from in any manner hosting, streaming, retransmitting, exhibiting, making available for viewing and downloading, providing access to and/or communicating to the public, displaying, uploading, modifying, publishing, updating and/or sharing on their websites through the Internet or any other platform, the film ‘Brahmastra Part One: Shiva’ and contents related thereto, so as to infringe the Plaintiff’s copyright therein, till the next date of hearing,” the court said.

It was also directed to the Department of Telecommunications and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, to issue necessary notifications calling upon various Internet Service Providers to block access to the websites of the rogue websites.

“There is no gain saying that piracy has to be curbed and needs to be dealt with a heavy hand and injunction against screening of copyrighted content by rogue websites ought to be granted,” the court noted.

“This position is acknowledged and re-affirmed in several decisions and in order to avoid prolixity, I may only allude to two judgments of this court…,” the court said referring various judgements in relation with the matter.

Why did Rajamouli come on board for Brahmastra?

1

The country’s best and biggest director SS Rajamouli is presenting Brahmastra and supporting the film. He is promoting the film and the grand pre-release event took place in Hyderabad last night. There are speculations about Rajamouli’s investment and there are talks about his creative involvement in Brahmastra. Rajamouli revealed about his involvement for Brahmastra. “I haven’t done so much for Brahmastra. The real reason I associated with Brahmastra was the story and the vision of Ayan Mukerji. When I see a good product coming, I feel I should do something for that” told Rajamouli.

He continued saying “When I first saw KGF, I did not know anything about the film. I thought it was a great product and I started talking to people about the film to help it. Similarly, I think Brahmastra is a great product. That is the reason I came on board for the film. Civilizations across the world were formed on the banks of the rivers. We started moving from South to North with our films like Baahubali and KGF. Its time and I hope that the love starts flowing from North to South. We are a country and we have to make Indian films, not language films”. Brahmastra is directed by Ayan Mukerji and the film has Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, Alia Bhatt and Mouni Roy in the lead roles. Brahmastra is hitting the screens on September 9th.

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer Brahmastra is hitting the screens in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam languages on September 9th. The Telugu pre-release event took place last night in a star hotel in Hyderabad after the massive event in Ramoji Film City got canceled. Young Tiger NTR is the special guest of the evening and his lean look is the surprise for his fans. Here are the highlights of the event:

SS Rajamouli: In Brahmastra, Ranbir Kapoor has a power where he can throw the fire. It was shown in the trailer and it is fantastic. That was prepared live for the event. There would be fireworks going up everywhere. In the end, Ranbir asks NTR to show his power. NTR’s thigh-slapping moment and the massive fireworks are planned to be a treat for the audience. We missed this and we will plan this during the success party of Brahmastra. The Ramoji Film City’s event was the best one planned but it did not happen. The permission was denied because of Ganesh Nimmajanam. I wanted to support Brahmastra as it is all about superpowers from our Itihasas.

NTR: I would like to apologize to my fans and the media as the event got canceled. There are few actors who have left an impact on me. I love Amitabh Bachchan and his intensity, his voice. After Amitji, it is Ranbir Kapoor who inspired me as an actor. My favorite film is Rockstar. Alia is one of the finest actresses of our generation. I share a great bonding with SS Rajamouli and Nagarjuna. Rajamouli and Karan Johar united our film industry as Indian cinema. I respect them for their work. Hope Brahmastra will be one more milestone in Indian cinema. The biggest directors of the country like Rajamouli shivers before the release of his film. Wishing Nagarjuna garu all the best for Brahmastra.

Nagarjuna: I was looking for the event as Rajamouli planned it and NTR is attending it. Today is Hari Krishna garu’s birthday and wishing him on the occasion. I am so happy that Rajamouli is presenting the film. I was wondering why Rajamouli is taking so much time for a film. I realized that Ayan Mukerji is his disciple. I have good friends in the team. Ranbir and Alia are the finest actors of this generation. Brahmastra is the biggest ever release for any Indian film.

Alia Bhatt: Thank you everyone for joining the event here. Talking about Brahmastra is quite emotional. We are seven days away from the release. Ayan is our light, guiding force and our creator. He is missing being here. Thank you SS Rajamouli garu for being here. Thank you for making me apart of RRR. Without you, Brahmastra is incomplete. Tarak is a Mega Megastar. He is one of the nicest souls. Nag sir is my favorite man on the sets.

Telugu audience are here to encourage good films. Hope Brahmastra will impress the audience. Thank you Akkineni fans, Nandamuri fans and Rajamouli’s fans for coming to the event. Why is #BoycottBrahmastra Trending?

0

The new Boycott trend created a huge impact across the circles of Bollywood. Films like Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan are badly impacted and the films failed to report minimum footfalls. The next target of Bollywood is Brahmastra featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles. The hashtag #BoycottBrahmastra has been trending from the past few weeks. The Boycott gang is posting lakhs of tweets on Twitter and this is worrying the team which is promoting the film all over.

Alia Bhatt’s ‘Don’t like me, Don’t watch me’ remark added fuel for #BoycottBrahmastra. The past videos of Amitabh Bachchan and Ranbir Kapoor are going viral. In an episode of KBC, Amitabh reportedly called ghoonghat and he is called a Hinduphobic. Ranbir Kapoor’s old interview revealed about him of being a big beef guy. The netizens argue that a beef eater cannot play the role of Shiva in Brahmastra. The nepotism topic has been trending across the circles of Bollywood since the demise of Sushant Singh Rajput. Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are trolled for the same. Netizens have pledged not to support the nepo-kids.

Boycott heat reaches SS Rajamouli

0

SS Rajamouli happens to be the most successful director of Indian cinema. He is a man of fewer words and more work. The top director prefers not to stand in any controversy and he has never made a single controversial statement or criticized anyone till date. He is presenting the Telugu version of Ranbir Kapoor’s Brahmastra and he is promoting the film across the South. The hashtag of #BoycottBrahmastra has been trending across the country for a long time. Bollywood biggies like Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan have been impacted because of the trolls and the boycott trends.

The Boycott gang expressed their dissatisfaction for Rajamoili promoting Brahmastra. Taking twitter, several netizens and fans asked Rajamouli to stay away from promoting Brahmastra. They suggested Rajamouli to continue delivering brilliant work by directing films and not to involve in the promotions of Brahmastra. Some of them also suggested the master storyteller not to fall in the trap of Brahmastra and land himself in trouble. They say that the team of Brahmastra is banking on the image of SS Rajamouli. There are several tweets against Rajamouli.

Surprisingly, the film’s producer Karan Johar is absent for the film’s promotions as he is facing the Boycott heat. Brahmastra is made on a massive budget and is hitting the screens on September 9th across the globe. Ayan Mukerji directed the film and Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Mouni Roy and Nagarjuna played the lead roles. Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone will be seen in cameos.
