‘Kantara’ producer, director summoned by Kerala police over plagiarism

The main actor and director of super hit Kannada movie ‘Kantara’, Rishab Shetty, and its producer, Vijay Krigandur Ahad were present before Kozhikode Deputy Commissioner of Police, K.E. Baiju today.

The director and producer of the movie appeared before the investigating officer after the Supreme Court of India on Thursday (Feb 9, 2023) granted anticipatory bail to director Rishab Shetty and producer Vijay Kirgandur.

The division bench of the Supreme Court comprising of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices P.S. Narasimha and J.B. Final Cut: 6 Indian films on Oscars ‘reminder list’ of 301 ‘eligible productions’

0

Six Indian feature films — the much-favoured ‘RRR’, India’s official entry ‘The Last Film Show’ (‘Chhello Show’), the sleeper hit ‘Kantara’, ‘The Kashmir Files’, ‘Gangubai Kathiyawadi’ and ‘Me Vasantrao’, the Marathi-language biopic on classical singer Vasantrao Deshpande — are on the list of 301 movies that are eligible for the 95th Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the list on Monday (U.S. Pacific Time). It includes presumed contenders such as ‘Elvis’, ‘The Fabelmans’ and ‘Living’. The number of movies marks an increase from last year’s 276 films that were eligible from 2021, and down from 366 in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, reports ‘Variety’.

All these expected contenders are listed on the Academy’s annual Reminder List of Productions Eligible for the 95th Academy Awards, including the performers eligible for consideration in the acting categories.

The highest-grossing movies of the year, including ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ are on the robust list, while critically acclaimed features such as ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ and ‘Tar’ are also in the mix.

The streamers, ‘Variety’ continues, are well-represented with Netflix’s ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ and ‘Glass Onion’, Amazon’s ‘Argentina, 1985’ and ‘Thirteen Lives’ and Apple’s ‘Cha Cha Real Smooth’ and ‘Emancipation’.

There’s also a good number of international features, even if they’re not their country’s official submission, such as ‘RRR’ and Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Korean drama ‘Broker’.

There is also a solid showing for women-directed vehicles such as Gina Prince-Bythewood’s ‘The Woman King’, Charlotte Wells’s ‘Aftersun’ and Sarah Polley’s ‘Women Talking’.

Not on the list is Kelly Reichardt’s ‘Showing Up’. ‘Variety’ notes that though it debuted at Cannes, A24, its makers, opted for a 2023 release. Despite being released theatrically in April, and receiving solid reviews, Mayim Bialik’s directorial debut ‘As They Made Us’ from Quiver also wasn’t among the 301 movies.

The Academy’s 9,579 eligible voting members will begin filling out their ballots on Thursday, January 12, at 9:00 a.m. (U.S. Pacific Time) and ballots will close on Tuesday, January 17 at 5:00 p.m.

The official Oscar nominations will be announced January 24, with the ceremony airing live on the American TV network ABC on March 12 from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Twitter suspends ‘Kantara’ actor and activist Kishore’s account

0

Twitter has suspended popular South Indian actor Kishore’s account. An activist, especially on farmers’ problems, Kishore is well-known for expressing his views without any fear of the establishment striking back.

It is this forthrightness that attracts people to his tweets, but he hasn’t yet responded to the suspension of his Twitter account.

Kishore had earlier supported the controversial statement of Sai Pallavi equating the killings of Kashmiri Pandits with the murders of Muslims. He had questioned the media for attacking the medical doctor-turned-multiple-award-winning actress and asked journalists whether it was a crime for film personalities to have an opinion on social issues.

The actor, who played a main antagonist (a police officer) against Rishab Shetty in the superhit ‘Kantara’, has spoken up against superstitions.

On ‘Kantara’, he had stated that like all good movies, it has transcended the boundaries of caste, religion and language, and united people. It is creating awareness through entertainment. If cinema is used to encourage superstition and divide people by provoking communal feelings, even a big film will be the biggest defeat of humanity, he stated.

Laziness doesn’t work in the film business, say ‘K.G.F.’, ‘Kantara’ makers

0

The ‘K.G.F.’ franchise and ‘Kantara’ are two projects that have emerged as the breakout films on the Indian cinematic landscape.

‘K.G.F. Chapter 1’, which was released in 2018, opened up a new market for films from down south, more so for films from Karnataka. The state had earlier delivered top-rated films from directors such as Girish Kasaravalli, it was ‘K.G.F.’ that re-introduced Kannada cinema to a new generation of cinema goers and also tasted widespread commercial success.

‘Kantara’ which was released earlier this year in September, furthered the pan-India grip of Kannada cinema. While at surface level, these stories may look like breakout successes, scratching the surface a bit will reveal that the reason behind the success of these stories are their rootedness, a philosophy that the makers of both these movies, Hombale Films, stand by.

Vijay Kiragandur and Chaluve Gowda, the founders of Hombale films have “always prioritised the content” over anything, they told IANS.

“For a story to go truly global, it is imperative for it to stay rooted, be honest with the audience,” they shared.

“The story, the script and the characters — these are the foundations of any film and once you get that right, everything follows and everything falls in place. But if the script is not strong, the foundation is weak then the whole film falters,” Chaluve said.

While film production may be about investing money and taking up right choices, it is also about the correct investment of time. “Our major investment is in the form of time and we are very generous with investing time at the scripting level compared to the filming,” Vijay expressed.

Obviously, the more you sweat during practice, the less you bleed during the war.

While the production house has clocked a decade in film business, like everyone it too faced the heat from the lockdown induced by the pandemic, it was a difficult phase because majority of their films are suited for theatres and experience which can’t be replicated on OTT platforms.

The makers noted: “Covid-19 has changed a lot of things for the film industry, it has catalysed the unification of Indian cinema because during lockdown, people were watching films from across regional film industries of India on OTT platforms.

“Storytellers will have to deliver something new to the audience. Lethargy and laziness won’t work in the film business now,” they added.

As Walter White said in ‘Breaking Bad’, they “Are Goddamn Right!” because Covid-19 has beaten redundancy to the pulp and discarded it into the dumpster.

Sharing an update on the status of their most anticipated film ‘Salaar’, the producers said: “80-85 per cent of ‘Salaar’ has been completed, only the climax remains to be shot. We had already announced the release date of September 28, 2023 and we are sure that we will release the film on time.”

Vijay believes cinema will always be a force of change: “It serves as a powerful medium through which social messages can be delivered in an effective manner.

“Take for instance ‘Kantara’, the ‘Buta Kola’ sequence is something that now everyone in the world knows about. We want to convey a good message, be it cultural or traditional and also contribute to the economy through stories.”

As for the projects in the pipeline, the makers have a loaded slate in the form of ‘Dhoomam’ – which features Fahadh Faasil and Aparna Balamurali, they have ‘Raghu Thatha’ in Tamil starring Keerthy Suresh, ‘Bagheera’ written by ‘K.G.F.’ helmer Prashanth Neel, and also ‘Tyson’ with Prithviraj Sukumaran.
