TDP announces boycott of Andhra local polls

2

Andhra Pradesh’s opposition Telugu Desam Party on Friday announced its decision to boycott the upcoming Zilla and Mandal Parishad polls, with party chief N. Chandrababu Naidu expressing doubts over them being held in a free and fair manner.

Interacting with the media at Mangalagiri following the party’s politbureau meet, Naidu, who is also the former Chief Minister, objected to the election notification being issued in haste by the newly-appointed State Election Commissioner Neelam Sahni, who took over charge on Thursday and issued the election notification the same evening.

“The SEC has been reduced to a mere rubber stamp in the Parishad polls,” Naidu alleged.

The TDP has been asking for a fresh notification of local body elections on account of the Tirupati Lok Sabha bypoll.

Noting that the SEC was to announce the polls after taking the opinion of all political parties, he said it had announced the dates on its own. “I don’t think these polls will be held freely and fairly. Therefore the party has decided not to participate in these polls,” Naidu said.

On Thursday, the SEC announced that the ZPTC and MPTC polls would be held on April 8, and results declared on April 10. The polls, originally scheduled to be held in 2020, were put on hold by then SEC Ramesh Kumar, citing the Covid pandemic.

The BJP and Jana Sena parties also boycotted Friday’s all-party meet convened by the SEC.

TDP, BJP, Janasena boycott SEC meet on MPTC, ZPTC polls

2

The all-party meeting held by AP State Election Commission on Friday (today) to discuss the upcoming MPTC, ZPTC elections turned to be a disaster as major opposition parties of Andhra Pradesh skipped the meeting.

This is the first meeting held by the newly appointed SEC Nilam Sawhney.

The TDP, BJP and Janasena have boycotted the meeting to protest the release of election schedule by the SEC unilaterally even before the all party meeting was held and ignoring the demand raised by opposition parties earlier to issue a fresh notification for the elections.

Nilam Sawhney declared that the elections will be held based on old notification issued in March 2020 when Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar was SEC.

However, Nimmagadda postponed those elections citing corona then.

At that time, there were several allegations against ruling YSRCP leaders of not allowing candidates of opposition parties to file nominations. For this reason, opposition parties demanded Nilam Sawhney to cancel old notification, issue fresh notification and call nominations afresh.

But Nilam decided to go ahead with old notification.

Opposition parties fired at Nilam alleging that she is dancing to the tunes of YSRCP leaders and issued poll schedule as per old notification to benefit YSRCP.

The TDP, Janasena and BJP boycotted the meeting alleging the ‘undemocratic attitude’ of SEC in conducting the MPTC, ZPTC polls.

Representatives of only YSRCP, Congress and CPM attended the SEC meeting.

TDP sinking ship, foundation day looked like closure: YSRCP

2

Senior Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and Sattenapalli MLA Ambati Rambabu on Tuesday claimed that the Opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is a sinking ship as evident from the way its foundation day was commemorated.

“When does anybody celebrate the foundation day, after sunrise. But Chandrababu and that party (TDP) commemorated during sunset time,” said Rambabu.

He claimed that this kind of celebration indicates closure with no future prospects.

“What I understand from this is that this is a day of closure. There is no hope for this party. This is like a sinking ship,” the YSRCP leader claimed about the foundation day.

He questioned where Naidu was when Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) established TDP in 1982 and claimed that he entered the political outfit like a snake invading an anthill built by the ants.

Rambabu advised TDP followers not to pin their hopes on Naidu that he would come and do something, doling out free advice to them to find their own ways.

He claimed that Heritage malls may have to be run in TDP offices in the future as there would not be any work in them.

Naidu under huge pressure to rediscover TDP

6

In the last leg of his long political career, former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is faced with a challenging task of saving the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) from the rival onslaught. In the Mahabharata, they say that there were countless reasons for the tragic end of Karna. In the case of the TDP too, there are too many challenges that appear almost unsolvable considering the ruthless attacks from the YCP, the BJP and the Jana Sena parties.

Amidst this, Mr. Naidu is under unforeseen pressure to rediscover his party and refurbish it from top to bottom. But the question is how to go about this. Usually, they say one needs a thorn to remove a thorn. Presently, the biggest real challenge for the TDP is to deal with the dangerous attack launched by CM Jagan Reddy and his party from micro and macro levels. The all round rowdyism, money and muscle power coupled with the captive religious vote bank have made Mr. Jagan Reddy an unchallengeable leader overnight after his victory in the 2019 election.

The pro-YCP commentators try to weaken the morale of Mr. Naidu by saying that only Jr. NTR would be able to breathe new life into the TDP. They are always ready to brand Nara Lokesh as inefficient. On the other hand, political analysts ask how Jr. NTR could face the mighty muscle power of Jagan Reddy. Even Pawan Kalya, who is known as the Power Star, could not stand the street power of the YCP and joined hands with the Modi-Shah duo to protect his cadres from the YCP political harassment.

Undoubtedly, Mr. Naidu’s immediate challenge seems to be preparing his party to match with the mob power of the YCP at the village, mandal, district and State levels. Along with this, the TDP must focus on socio-economic and political reengineering focusing on elimination of total opposition in favour of a single party existence.

TDP leaders commemorate party’s 40th anniversary

0

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders commemorated the 40th anniversary of the political outfit on Monday since it was formed in 1982.

“I am very happy to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the TDP established by great leader N.T. Rama Rao (NTR) for the self-respect and support of weaker sections,” said the party’s National General Secretary Nara Lokesh.

He thanked all the party cadres for standing up for the poor sections of the society for all these years.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was founded by NTR on March 29, 1982 in Hyderabad.

Rao was born on May 28, 1923 at Nimmakuru village in Krishna district. He studied B.A. at Andhra Christian (AC) college in Guntur and became a legendary actor to rule the Telugu film industry for decades.

Later, he established the TDP and stormed to power in just nine months.

On Monday, the party’s State President Kinjarapu Atchannaidu commemorated the 40th anniversary celebrations at the party’s Tirupati office.

He hoisted the party’s flag in presence of several party leaders and cadres in the Tirupati parliamentary constituency which will soon go for by-elections.

Meanwhile, TDP Supremo and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said that the party was formed with inspiration from Gurajada Apparao, Potti Sriramulu, B.R. Ambedkar, among others.

Can TDP face YCP-BJP onslaught in Tirupati?

2

The political circles are eagerly waiting to see how the rival parties will clash with their strategies in the Tirupati bypoll. TDP nominee Panabaka Lakshmi has already filed her nomination and started campaigning. YCP nominee Dr M Gurumurthy and BJP nominee K. Ratna Prabha will file their nominations today. While Gurumurthy chose to seek blessings at Dr Ambedkar statue, Ratna Prabha is visiting Tirumala for Sri Vari blessings.

Tirupati parliament segment consists of four assembly segments in the Nellore district and three districts in the Chittoor district. In both these districts, the YCP has gained an indisputable upper hand over the TDP in the 2019 elections. Especially, Chittoor is posing a bigger challenge for Naidu considering rising threat from Minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, Chandragiri MLA Chevireddy Bhasker Reddy and their party followers.

It was Peddireddy and Chevireddy who played a crucial role in ensuring a historic defeat to the TDP in the panchayat polls in Chandrababu’s own Kuppam assembly segment in the Chittoor district.

With renewed enthusiasm, the YCP has been claiming that they would aim at a majority of 4 lakh this time. The YCP got 2.28 lakh majority in 2019. On its part, the BJP is threatening to split the TDP vote considerably. Doubtless to say, it is going to be a greater challenge for Naidu to face the YCP-BJP onslaught.

2 from TDP file nomination for Tirupati bypoll

0

Two candidates have filed their nominations for the Tirupati Lok Sabha bypoll on behalf of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

Panabaka Lakshmi filed her nomination on Wednesday with two sets of documents. She was the first candidate to be declared as a contestant among the three contesting parties — TDP, YSRCP and BJP — for the forthcoming bypoll scheduled on April 17.

The returning officer mentioned that one Seelam Tirupaiah has also filed his nomination representing the TDP.

The by-election for the Scheduled Caste (SC) reserved constituency is emerging to be one of the most watched and fiercely contested elections.

Meanwhile, Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) in-charge for Chittoor district, Y.V. Subba Reddy, said on Wednesday that the party’s Tirupati bypoll candidate, M. Gurumoorthy, will file his nomination on Monday.

Gurumoorthy is a physiotherapist who rendered his services to Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and walked along with him during the 3,600 km long padayatra.

The 36-year-old YSRCP candidate comes from a non-political Dalit family.

TDP ‘sting operation’ on Jagan Capital shifting plot

2

The Telugu Desam Party is under constant threat following cases filed against Chandrababu in the Amaravati assignment lands issue. The TDP has now released videos of sting operations held on the Amaravati residents who were shown by the CID as complainants in the assignment lands case. In the videos, the residents were seen as saying they had not given any complaints to the CID with regard to the sale of their lands at the time of the land pooling.

The residents said that the CID came and collected their signatures. They were told that it was just for checking whether or not they were the owners of those lands. The TDP asserted that the videos were enough to say how a heinous ‘Government conspiracy’ was going on even as the CID officials took an active role in this.

Signature was wrongly taken from one Kanda Pavani, who was a resident of Amaravati Capital. Now she said she would not have signed in the document given by the CID if she had known about the YCP Government’s plan. The police made sure she signed in the paper only to confirm the status of her ownership of the land. She said she had voluntarily sold 70 cents assignment land that came to her from her grandfather and there was no force from any side in this matter.

Another Amaravati resident named Addepalli Sambasiva Rao said in the video that he had some ‘konda poramboku’ land in Capital City and sold part of it. He had clarified that there was no force on them to sell their lands at the time of the land pooling drive.

TDP ex MLA D. Narendra Kumar cited these videos and expressed concern over the low levels to which CM Jagan and his party MLAs were ‘stooping’ in order to create fabricated evidence and kill Amaravati for the sole purpose of shifting the Capital.

TDP wins nail-biting Tadipatri battle

4

The JC family established its firm hold on Tadipatri yet again. All the might and power games of CM Jaganmohan Reddy and his Ministers did not work there. JC Prabhakar Reddy once again became the Chairman of Tadipatri municipality. He has worked in this capacity previously when his brother JC Diwakar Reddy was the MLA from here. When Diwakar Reddy became MP, Prabakar Reddy became the MLA.

Interestingly, even the independents have extended their support to the JC family. For several days, the TDP has taken its loyalist councillors to Hyderabad and Bangalore to save them from falling prey to the inducements of the YCP. Prabhakar Reddy has asserted that justice has won the game finally.

The municipal commissioner rejected the votes of the MLCs which led to tension-filled drama on the chairman election. MLA Kethireddy Pedda Reddy came to the municipal office with a large number of his supporters. But, the councillors did not yield to the threats and temptations.

After getting elected, Prabhakar Reddy said that there would be no place for goondaism and rowdyism in Tadipatri any more. He described their party councillors as ‘Bahubalis’ and ‘Jhansi Bais’ for their courage.

Naidu visit blocked by police at Renigunta airport

2

Tension mounted amid rising political temperatures in the Chittoor district. A large number of police arrived at the Renigunta airport and arrested the TDP leaders. The police officials also blocked former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s visit to Tirupati today. Mr. Naidu was prevented from coming out of the airport.

The police also served notices to the TDP chief saying that there was no permission for his visit because of the Coronavirus guidelines. They also pointed out that the Chandrababu tour would have a debilitating impact on the municipal election process in the town.

Along with this, the police placed TDP leaders across the district under house arrest. Former Minister Amarnath Reddy, former MLA Sugunamma, TDP Chittoor district president Pulvarthi Nani and others were held in custody.

Mr. Chandrababu Naidu has scheduled his visit to Tirupati today to call on and protest against the demolition of the shop of the TDP candidate in the temple town. Tirupati municipal corporation elections became a major issue of confrontation between both the parties. Chandragiri MLA Chevireddy Bhasker Reddy, who is very aggressive, has been mounting pressure on the TDP leaders in the town right from the beginning.

TDP releases manifesto with 10 promises for municipal polls

6

The principal opposition party in Andhra Pradesh, Telugu Desam Party (TDP), on Friday released a manifesto with 10 promises for the forthcoming urban local bodies elections.

“For the development of the towns, we released a manifesto with 10 promises. I request people to make TDP victorious in the municipal elections. If we win in the municipal polls, we will fulfill all the promises,” claimed TDP national general secretary Nara Lokesh.

He released the manifesto along with party state president Kinjarapu Atchannaidu and Varla Ramaiah.

Rs 5 meals through Anna Canteen, waiver of old tax, cleanliness, biannual job fairs for unemployed youth, trash-less towns, toilets and permanent auto rickshaw stands for auto rickshaw drivers are some of the promises.

Other promises included setting up of self-help groups, houses for the poor, hiking sanitation workers’ salary to Rs 21,000 and free drinking water connection with zero tax.

“During the 21 months reign of Jagan Reddy, there was no development in the towns. Not even potholes on the roads were repaired by this inefficient government,” said Lokesh.

After giving one chance, he alleged that they (YSRCP) destroyed the state and if another chance is given, people’s lives will be destroyed.

The TDP leader appealed to the voters to think and vote.

Meanwhile, TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu encountered an unpleasant situation in Kuppam constituency, where he is touring for the second day after the TDP aligned candidates massively lost out in the recent panchayat polls.

A person attending Naidu’s meeting shouted out to him to bring Junior NTR, a leading Telugu actor, into the party fold to which he just nodded his head.

Later, Naidu said he, Lokesh and other leaders will regularly visit Kuppam.

Incidentally, the actor’s photographs were also emblazoned on flexi posters, along with Nandamuri Harikrishna’s images among others, commemorating Naidu visit to his constituency which he has been representing for several years already.

Though Junior NTR canvassed for TDP in the 2009 polls, he did not repeat that act in the 2014 and 2019 polls and has been lying low politically for some years already.

YSRCP claims 2.7k panchayat wins, TDP 1.1k in fourth phase polls

5

With the completion of the fourth phase of panchayat polls in Andhra Pradesh, political parties have resumed doling out their own victory statistics about the candidates aligned to them.

Out of the 3,299 panchayats notified, the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) said polls occurred in 2,743 panchayats and claimed that 2,513 panchayats were won by the candidates aligned to the party.

According to YSRCP count, principal opposition, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) aligned candidates were restricted to only 488 panchayat victories.

The ruling party leaders also claimed that the YSRCP supporters managed to win 534 of the 554 unanimous panchayats in the fourth phase and asserted that the TDP won only nine panchayats.

Meanwhile, TDP claimed that it won 1,105 panchayats in the fourth phase while the ruling party won only 1,460.

“It has been proved that only TDP strengthened candidates have been honoured by the people in the elections. This is an example to show that people are loathing Jagan Reddy’s reign,” said a TDP leader.

As per TDP’s calculations, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its local ally Janasena won 42 panchayats while independents won 82.

Face saving for Chandrababu in native Naravaripalle poll

1

Despite all out efforts by the YCP leaders, the TDP supported candidate has won the panchayat election in Chandrababu Naidu’s native village of Naravaripalle. The village is located in the Chandragiri assembly segment which is represented by Chevireddy Bhasker Reddy.

The YCP brought in outsiders and tried all its tactics but eventually it failed to pull out a victory. The TDP has won in all the eight wards in the village. TDP supported candidate Bobba Lakshmi has won with a good majority of 563 votes. With this, the TDP local leaders heaved a sigh of relief. They faced a lot of pressure following the defeat of majority sarpanch elections in Naidu’s Kuppam assembly segment in the previous phase of elections.

The TDP kept a close watch on the movement of outsiders in Naravaripalle since the election began. When they saw outsiders entering the polling booths, they immediately complained to the election authorities. On the other hand, the ruling YCP leaders have said that the TDP has used inducements and gifts to win the voters in an unfair manner.

In Kuppam, democracy is defeated, says Naidu

2

The YCP has claimed to have shaken the foundation of Chandrababu Naidu’s support base in his own Kuppam assembly segment. Now, Mr. Naidu asserted that in this lawless election, it was democracy that was being defeated in Kuppam but not the Telugu Desam Party.

He slammed the ruling party for using huge ‘corruption money’ amassed from the sand and liquor mafia to buy votes at Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000 per head. Crores of rupees were dumped in the Kuppam segment to get immoral victories there. The ruling party maniacs brought outsiders to defeat democracy. Kuppam was known for its credibility, peace-loving people and ethical values but now the YCP goondas have polluted the atmosphere.

Mr. Naidu asked why he should resign when the YCP leaders misused the police and threatened the candidates besides committing many violations to snatch unethical victories. The people have already started revolting against the implementation of the oppressive, faction-ridden Raja Reddy Constitution by Jagan Reddy. The TDP cadres would rally together to protect the benevolent, people-friendly Ambedkar Constitution in Andhra Pradesh.

He said that despite the YCP threats, the TDP and its allies have posted good results and got 41.41 percent seats in the 3rd phase panchayat polls. They have won over 1,093 panchayats as the final results poured in. The TDP has already won 38.74 percent seats in first phase and 39.52 percent seats in second phase.

Mr. Naidu ridiculed the Chief Minister’s comment on sale of 7,000 acres of the Visakha Steel Plant. He asked whether sale of the public property would be the solution for each and every problem. In that case, this CM would put up the entire Vizag City and the whole Andhra up for sale. If Jagan Reddy was really interested, he might as well take this Posco steel plant to his Idupulapaya area where he already had a cement factory. Ultimately, only this CM’s family should possess all the industries and the factories in the State and nobody else. Jagan Reddy was aiming at becoming the richest man in the country as a whole.

TDP gets sweet victory in Kodali Nani native village

1

Minister Kodali Nani has been making unsparing attacks on Chandrababu Naidu, Lokesh and other leaders. His attacks have led to the SEC ordering a case to be booked against him. Now, Kodali suffered a severe setback and the TDP got a morale-boosting victory. The TDP supported candidate won the panchayat election in Kodali’s native village, Yalamarru. It is located in Pedaparupudi mandal in the Pamarru assembly segment.

Though Kodali is representing Gudiwada segment in the Assembly, the defeat in his native village located in the neighbouring segment is being seen as a big victory for the Opposition cadres. TDP candidate Kolluri Anusha won over the YCP candidate with a majority of 271 votes. The news brought great cheer and they took her in a procession amid fireworks. Kodali Nani’s wife’s village is also Yalamarru. Despite the presence of his relations and strong ties, the TDP defeated the YCP there.

The TDP also celebrated its victory in the native village of YCP MP Gorantla Madhav in Anantapuram. The TDP candidate won it unanimously there. Both Kodali and Madhav were known for their bitter criticism of Chandrababu Naidu. With the latest victories, the Opposition are in an upbeat mood.

The State Election Commission has been taking stringent steps which left YCP Ministers Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy and Kodali Nani with no choice but to keep silent on the election process.

YSRCP not putting pressure on Centre on Vizag steel plant: TDP

1

The opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Thursday accused the ruling YSRCP in Andhra Pradesh of “playing a dubious role” and not putting pressure on the Centre to stall the ongoing privatisation of the Vizag steel plant.

“The steel plant should remain in government control, considering how Andhra people waged prolonged agitations and farmers gave away thousands of acres of their ancestral lands. The Jagan Moharn Reddy regime is playing a dubious role in the whole privatisation plan,” claimed TDP national General Secretary Nara Lokesh

The opposition leader claimed that the people of Visakhapatnam would chase away senior YSRCP leader and Rajya Sabha member V Vijayasai Reddy due to his attempts to undermine the agitations on the issue.

“When plant employees and the people were rising up in massive protests, Sai was bold enough to say that he cannot give an assurance to the agitators but only get an appointment with the Prime Minister,” the TDP supremo’s son said.

Branding Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) leaders as “fake”, Lokesh alleged that they were issuing false statements to demotivate people.

According to the TDP leader, YSRCP candidates would lose their security deposits in the next Assembly elections if they failed to fight against the ongoing privatisation.

He said that the TDP would support the agitations to bring all possible pressure on the state and central governments.

Former TDP MLA from Gajuwaka, Palla Srinivasa Rao, has already begun a hunger strike against the plant’s privatisation.

Lokesh claimed that the TDP had bagged 38 per cent of the seats in the first phase of the four-phased rural local bodies’ elections, despite all-round attacks by YSRCP.

“The YSRCP tried to win the polls through threats, kidnappings, tearing of nomination papers etc due to fear of losing. The YSRCP leaders even sent WhatsApp messages to voters to threaten withdrawal of pensions and house site pattas if they did not vote for the YSRCP,” he claimed.

Referring to TDP state President Kinjarapu Atchannaidu’s arrest, Lokesh said that he was sent to jail even though he did not issue threats to rival candidate in Nimmada village. On the other hand, he alleged, Kannababu Raju who was aligned with YSRCP openly threatened an opposition candidate but was given station bail.

On Thursday, Lokesh visited Sri Lakshminarasimha Swamy temple in Mangalagiri town and inaugurated a health camp of Lakshminarasimha goldsmiths welfare society.

He announced Rs 5 lakh financial support for the welfare of goldsmiths and promised them continuous TDP support.

YCP-TDP force Ramesh to open Call Centre

0

The post of the State Election Commissioner (SEC) has fallen into an unenviable position in Andhra Pradesh. SEC Ramesh Kumar has been fighting like a one man army against the YCP Ministers and MLAs. Now, even Chandrababu Naidu has launched attacks on Ramesh Kumar for not preventing the YCP attacks and atrocities in the first phase panchayat elections. Naidu has threatened to go to the court on countless illegalities.

Amid the threats from both the ruling and opposition parties, Ramesh Kumar has decided to monitor complaints himself personally. He has launched a Call Centre at 08662466877 at the SEC office. He specifically selected some staff to take each and every complaint in detail.

Not only that, Ramesh Kumar has decided to himself closely monitor the complaints round the clock. He has told his staff to send the complaints immediately to the respective District Collectors, SPs and Returning Officers for taking necessary action.

Ramesh started the Call Centre in the face of strong criticism from the Opposition over unchecked election offences by the ruling party leaders. There was also the threat of many aggrieved candidates to file petitions in the courts. Already, the SEC is dragged into many cases in the court by the ruling YCP.

Dismal performance by TDP in its bastions: YSRCP

0

Andhra Pradesh government’s advisor Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy has poured cold water on TDP’s assertions that the ruling party has been facing resentment in the state, by comparing with the results of the panchayat elections, as YSRCP leaders claimed that TDP has put up a dismal performance in its bastions.

Reddy asserted that the YSRCP aligned candidates made inroads in Mailavaram, the constituency of former TDP Minister Devineni Uma.

He highlighted that TDP aligned candidates could only manage three sarpanch posts out of 48 panchayats, compared to YSRCP’s 44 victories.

The YSRCP leader gave a statement comparing the victories of both the ruling party and TDP in the first phase of the four-phase polls.

Likewise in Tekkali, which happens to be the constituency of TDP state president Kinjarapu Atchannaidu, the opposition party managed to win only 23 out of 135 panchayats, while YSRCP managed to win 112.

Similarly in Tuni, the constituency of former TDP minister and senior leader Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, TDP secured only three victories from a total of 58 panchayats, with the balance 54 being bagged by YSRCP supporters.

Moreover, the opposition party won only two panchayats in Mangalagiri constituency’s 18 panchayats, which was the constituency of TDP supremo Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s son Nara Lokesh in the last Assembly elections.

“Mangalgiri reflects the fact that the party has achieved absolute obscurity in the state. On the other hand, YSRCP candidates managed to secure 14 out of the 18 panchayats in fray,” said a YSRCP leader.

In a similar fashion, Naidu’s TDP suffered setbacks in Undi, a TDP fortress for several years, by winning only 14 out of the 70 panchayats, compared to YSRCP’s exploits of 50 sarpanch post victories.

Undi constituency was represented by TDP leader Kalavapudi Siva.

According to the YSRCP leaders, candidates aligned to Pawan Kalyan’s Janasena won only three panchayats in Bhimavaram constituency, from where the actor-politician lost in the 2019 Assembly elections, compared to TDP’s two victories and YSRCP’s 39 wins.

YSRCP leaders claimed that the ruling party won more than 80 percent panchayats in the first phase elections, indicating the popularity of the chief minister’s welfare-centric governance.

“TDP faced humiliation due to party’s dismal performance in age-old bastions,” claimed a YSRCP leader.

In many places, Janasena ate into the vote share of TDP.

YCP scores victories over TDP in unanimous polls

2

As expected, the ruling YCP has got a firm hold on the panchayat elections. In the first phase polls, the YCP supported candidates were declared unanimously elected in 468 sarpanch posts as against just 22 of the TDP. The overall percentage of unanimous polls in the first phase was put at 15.91 percent.

The polling will now be held in over 2,732 panchayats. Of the total 3,249 panchayats in the first phase, unanimous polls were declared in 517 seats altogether. Of these, over 27 were independents who have no political party affiliations. The percentage of unanimous polls came down significantly when compared to the controversial MPTC and ZPTC elections that were held in March last year. After that, the TDP started putting objections to the campaign for unanimous polls.
Analysts say that the ruling YCP leaders have actually aimed at more unanimous polls and the comparatively low percentage would indeed be a blow to their strategies.

It is now clear the polling will be held in about 85 percent seats. Given the stiff competition between the rival candidates, it is indeed going to be a tough test for the ruling YCP to prove its supremacy. On its part, the TDP has mounted significant pressure on the ruling party with its campaign against unanimous polls.

TDP MPs submit complaints against Jagan govt to Shah

2

A team of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday and submitted a slew of complaints ranging from alleged offences against democratic institutions, capital trifurcation, corruption and others on Andhra Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

“Attack on media, attack on courts, attack on judges, attack on the Opposition. We told all these. Attack on election commissioner. These are all democratic institutions,” said TDP MP Jayadev Galla after submitting the complaints to the Home Minister.

Since coming to power, Galla said the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) has been allegedly violating the Constitution and is hell bent on destroying the four pillars of democracy, legislature, executive, judiciary and the media.

“We have briefed him (Amit Shah) and submitted a representation on the deteriorating law and order, increasing attacks on religious places, harassment of victims and opposition party leaders by filing illegal cases, rampant corruption and involvement of YSRCP in various scams in the state,” the MP said.

He said Shah listened to them patiently, and asked for clarifications, and assured them that he would look into the alleged cases listed in the representation for appropriate action.

The TDP team also apprised Shah on the alleged temple attacks and highlighted about the 7-year-old video of pastor Praveen Chakravarthy.

The MPs told the Home Minister that the three capitals plan is allegedly a design to destroy Amaravati which they called a national asset.

The Opposition leaders claimed the Andhra Pradesh government failed in administration and continuity of governance, including allegedly losing investors’ confidence.

“The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh till the month of September, 2020 was accused in more than 30 cases. About 11 cases are registered by the CBI. He is also accused in six cases lodged by the ED. Currently, the CM is on conditional bail,” the MPs mentioned in a note submitted to Shah.

In this alleged background, the Parliamentarians appealed to the Central government to intervene and restore Constitution functioning and its machinery in the southern state.

“Further, it is also vital to conduct an enquiry into various irregularities being carried out by the state government in order to plunder public money. Your timely intervention would instill confidence,” the MPs claimed in their plaint to Shah.
