Varisu is an upcoming family drama of Thalapathy Vijay in Vamshi Paidipalli’s direction. Varisu is being released only in Tamil language and the Telugu version of the film ‘Vaarasudu’ will be released on the 14th of January. Varisu is going to have premiere shows in overseas. Rashmika Mandanna is the lead actress and this is the first straight Tamil film of Dil Raju from his production house. Top producer Dil Raju produced Varisu, his first Tamil film that features Vijay in the lead role. The film is titled Vaarasudu in Telugu and is directed by Vamshi Paidipally. Varisu is announced for January 11th release and there is a huge confusion over the Telugu version of the film. Vaarasudu is now pushed to January 14th as the final work for the Telugu version is not ready. With Veera Simha Reddy releasing on January 12th and Waltair Veerayya releasing on January 13th, Vaarasudu release is pushed to January 14th. This would be a comfortable date for a Vijay’s film in Telugu feels Dil Raju.

Dil Raju made some strong statements in the recent weeks and his acts too irked some of the Tollywood bigwigs. He also took a direct dig on Mythri Movie Makers, the production house behind Waltair Veerayya and Veera Simha Reddy. Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya, Balakrishna’s Veerasimha Reddy and Vijay’s Varisu are hitting the screens during the Sankranthi 2023 holiday season. The makers of these projects announced that they will release during the holiday season but the exact dates are not announced. Though the shoots of these projects commenced long ago, they are yet to be wrapped up. The last schedule of Vijay and Vamshi Paidipally’s Varisu starts today and a fight, action episode will be shot. The patchwork of the film is planned in December and the team is working round the clock to wrap up the post-production work of Varisu.

Waltair Veerayya and Veerasimha Reddy too are in the last leg of shoot. The team of Waltair Veerayya is working without breaks to complete the shooting portions. Gopichand Malineni is focused on the post-production work off Veerasimha Reddy and he will film two songs on Balakrishna and Shruti Haasan in December. The promotional activities of these films will kick-start in December. All the three films are in a heavy rush as the shoots are yet to be wrapped up. A couple of years ago, there were debates on about allocating theatres for a dubbed film during the Sankranthi season. Now the same situation is getting repeated for Sankranthi 2023. Dil Raju who is the producer of Vijay’s Varisu blocked several good screens in Nizam and Vizag regions for the film. Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya and Balakrishna’s Veera Simha Reddy are the films hitting the screens during the season. There are talks that Varisu will comparatively get more number of screens for Waltair Veerayya and Veera Simha Reddy. This is because of the hold of Dil Raju in the distribution system across the Telugu states.

Tollywood exhibitors will prefer to screen Waltair Veerayya and Veera Simha Reddy as they are straight Telugu films and have veteran actors playing the lead roles. But the agreements are done for Varisu. Mythri Movie Makers is producing Waltair Veerayya and Veera Simha Reddy and they are releasing both these films on their own. There would be a tough battle in the allocation of the screens during the season. Ajith’s Thunivu too is releasing during the season and Dil Raju will distribute the film. For Sankranthi 2023, there would be two straight Telugu films and two dubbed films.

Varisu / Varasudu Overseas Rights have been sold for an All-Time Record price for a Kollywood film. The film has been sold for 38 cr (4.6 Million USD) in the Overseas region which is the highest ever beating Darbar (35 Cr). It needs to collect at least 10 Million gross in the Overseas markets to achieve breakeven for the buyer. Films like 2.0, and PS-1 are own release by the producers.

Tamil market Overseas is not just limited to US/AUS/UK/Gulf like Telugu films as they have a wider population in Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, France/Europe, etc.

Vijay’s previous films like Mersal, and Bigil have collected more than 10 Million gross in the Overseas markets. So the recovery isn’t difficult with positive word of mouth for the film.

After the coronavirus pandemic, there is a huge vacuum in several film industries. Several Tamil actors have been looking towards Telugu films and filmmakers. Our over-enthusiastic producers have paid whopping amounts as advances and locked Tamil stars. Actors like Vijay, Dhanush, Sivakarthikeyan and others signed straight Telugu films. The filmmakers estimated high profits considering their Tamil markets. But as the stars collaborated with Telugu directors, the businesses are not so great for these films. The asking price for the theatrical rights is quite lesser than their regular market and quotes.

This turned out to be a shock for the filmmakers who are making films with Tamil stars. Their Telugu theatrical market completely depends on the buzz and the trailer. For now, there is no clarity about the exact pre-release business. Vijay has charged Rs 110 crores for Vaarasudu and the film should end up as a super hit to end up as a safe project. Tamil actor Vijay who is a Superstar in Tamil is enjoying enough craze across the Telugu states. Tamil actor Vijay is shooting for a bilingual which is titled Vaarasudu and it is directed by Vamshi Paidipally. The makers of the film announced that the film will have a Sankranthi 2023 release. The shoot of the film was uninterrupted because of the recent Tollywood Producers’ strike. The makers now closed the entire non-theatrical deals and they fetched Rs 120 crores. The satellite rights of Vaarasudu are bought by Sun Network for a whopping Rs 50 crores.

Amazon Prime acquired the digital rights of all the languages for Rs 60 crores and T Series bagged the audio rights for Rs 10 crores. This is a record among Vijay’s films. Vaarasudu is being made on a budget close to Rs 160 crores and the Tamil theatrical rights would be sold for record prices. Dil Raju is the producer and Thaman scores the music and background score. Rashmika is the leading lady and Vaarasudu is an action-packed mass entertainer.

He is the face of the Active Producers Guild of Tollywood and a series of meetings are planned this week to discuss about the hurdles the producers are facing. Leaving everyone in shock and surprise, the shoot of Dil Raju’s Vaarasudu featuring Vijay happened in Vizag as per the plan. Dil Raju came up with a silly explanation that Vaarasudu is a Tamil film and it is not a Telugu film.

Tollywood top producers are now furious on Dil Raju about his acts, statements and the work he has been doing. Dil Raju delivered fake promises recently. He said that he did not hike the ticket prices for Naga Chaitanya’s Thank You but the tickets were sold for high prices. Dil Raju is trolled on social media and the Tollywood media houses attacked him for his acts. Another active member of the Guild, S Naga Vamsi continued the shoot of Dhanush’s Sir and the shoot is happening in Ramoji Film City. Though the producers are tight-lipped, everyone is furious on Dil Raju and Naga Vamsi.

Story

ISI terrorists take hostage of 150 people in East Coast Mall, Chennai. The terrorists demand release of their leader Umar Farooq who is in Indian prison. Ex-RAW Agent Veera Raghavan is one of the hostages who swings into rescue operation. Rest of the film is how the rescue operation goes on.

Analysis

In general, the hostage dramas don’t fit for a larger-than-life mass hero on Indian screen. Film industry and audience hoped Sun Pictures, Nelson and Vijay team might break the rules with an engaging plot. Trailer hinted at a subtle humor laced thriller on the cards, but it has ended up another way. Narrating this thin plot film with linear screenplay is a good decision. Hostage theme films require smart writing to help convincingly narrate the rescue operations which is something sorely lacking in the film Beast.

With such a serious main plot, inserting any comedy is a double-edged sword. Director Nelson’s strength to generate humor is serious situations didn’t work this time. It is indigestible to see the comedy scenes by the hostages as if they are at picnic table. Over the top sequences are designed for Veera Raghavan are merely aimed at fans and fail to appeal to the average audience. Initial portions of the first half are engaging with the terrorist operations, Arabic Kuthu song and up until the main hostage drama begins. The graph goes down as the film progress from here. The Home Minister character, in charge of the rescue operations, leader of the terrorists and pretty much every character is irritating. The terrorists are shown as very harmless people, they barely hurt the hostages, and Veera was never challenged. None of the hijackers have any characterization. Climax is unbelievably silly – Veera goes to Pakistan, nabs the terrorist chief, brings him to India through Pakistan Airspace and as a bonus he pilots Sukhoi fighter jets – facepalm moment.

Performances

Vijay as usual is very fine in the two dance numbers. He excels in style and mannerisms. Except for the two songs, Pooja Hegde has no role in the film, and she is paid just for sitting around.

Production values by Sun pictures are very good. Anirudh’s background score is excellent and so is Manoj Paramhamsa’s cinematography. Frames are vibrant and rich. Dance director Jaani master has done good work. Though the technical departments are good, the poor direction and script have damaged the film beyond hope.

Verdict

BEAST is a farcical and stupid film that occasionally plays to the peanut galleries. Fans of Vijay might find it passable, for others this hostage action-comedy film doesn’t make the cut. Best to avoid.

The lyrical video of ‘Jolly O Gymkhana’, the second single from director Nelson Dilipkumar’s ‘Beast’, featuring actors Vijay and Pooja Hegde in the lead, is shaking up the Internet.

The song, which has been sung by Vijay himself, has garnered a whopping over 14 million views within just 24 hours of being released on the Internet.

Music for the song has been composed by Anirudh, the lyrics of which have been penned by Ku Karthik.

The song, which was released a little after 6 pm on Saturday, garnered a whopping 37,000 likes on YouTube in a matter of just 10 minutes of being released.

By Sunday morning, the song had gone past the 10 million views mark. By 1 pm on Sunday, the song had registered over 12 million views, with over 1.5 million people giving the breezy song a thumbs up on YouTube.

It may be recalled that the first single from the film, ‘Arabic Kuthu’, too had shattered records on the Internet. The lyric video of the number had garnered a whopping 100 million views.

Nelson Dilipkumar to direct superstar Rajinikanth’s next film

Nelson Dilipkumar, whose ‘Doctor’ went on to emerge as a blockbuster and who is currently directing the Vijay-starrer ‘Beast’, will next direct superstar Rajinikanth’s 169th film.

Making an official announcement on Thursday, Sun Pictures, the firm producing the film, tweeted, “Presenting Superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘Thalaivar169’ directed by Nelson Dilpkumar and music by Anirudh.”

Nelson too tweeted about the project.

He said, “Feeling elated to announce my next film with the legendary Superstar Rajinikanth sir. Happy to have associated with Sun Pictures and my dearest friend Anirudh once again!”

Rumours doing the rounds in the industry suggest that Nelson was invited by Rajinikanth during the time the ‘Beast’ crew celebrated the 100th day.

During their discussions then, Nelson is believed to have narrated a funny one-liner to Rajini. The superstar, it is said, liked the one-liner and that is how the project seems to have fallen into place.
