Amazon’s Rs 20,761 Cr largest ever FDI in Telangana

0

Thanks to the ever growing Hyderabad Metro City, Telangana is seeing a steady inflow of the Foreign Direct Investments in last two decades. Now, the Telugu state crossed another milestone. It has got Amazon’s huge web services project worth Rs. 20,761 Cr. This is hailed as the single largest ever FDI in Hyderabad and in the whole state of Telangana so far.

Overjoyed at the record investment, Chief Minister in Waiting KT Rama Rao said that this huge project would come up with multiple data centres in the state by 2022. KTR took to Twitter saying that the project would further create lots of job opportunities for the Telangana youth.

The day also brought cheerful news to Andhra Pradesh as well but on a lesser level. Minister Goutham Reddy said that a Taiwanese industrialists delegation has met and discussed with him the scope for future investments. Nothing concrete has come out of the visit. However, Goutham Reddy said that the state stood in first place in the country in the Ease of Doing Business. Their Government was also bringing in reforms in the education, medical, industrial and other sectors. All steps were being taken to make AP most investment-friendly. Special focus was placed on 3 industrial corridors and eight harbours.

Amazon Prime may soon come up with pay per view deal

0

Digital giant Amazon Prime acquired the digital streaming rights of Nani and Sudheer Babu starrer V for a record price of Rs 33 crores. The calculations of Amazon through V went haywire as most of them who had the subscription for Amazon did not watch the film because of the poor word of mouth. The weekend ended up with full of trolls on the film and Amazon made no new subscribers for the film’s release.

The digital team is not quite cautious with their future deals and have several proposals under discussion. The idea of profit-sharing with the producers is currently being discussed. Some of the digital heads suggested pay per view option at the price cap of Rs 50-100 so that the entire family can watch the exclusive premiere of their upcoming projects. Amazon will continue to acquire the digital rights of several biggies as the theatres will continue to remain shut for the rest of this year mostly.

Tollywood directors prefer Aha over Amazon and Netflix

0

Digital giants like Netflix and Amazon gained a huge set of audience across the Indian market. Several Tollywood directors and producers shifted their focus towards web series and OTT shows after the arrival of coronavirus pandemic. Allu Aravind’s Aha wanted to be a tough competitor but none of the web projects impressed the audience. But a lot of filmmakers are keen to join hands with Aha instead of Amazon or Netflix. It is because the digital giants are taking a longer time to finalize the projects.

Amazon and Netflix follow a corporate discipline and structure to finalize the projects and scripts. They need to go through the entire script and the script needs levels of approval. For the approval of scripts alone, it takes 3-4 months. Then the focus gets shifted on the budgets and the casting. Amazon and Netflix are keen on working directors who have prior experience in web series and web-based films. Our Tollywood directors are not experienced in scripting web series.

Hence, most of them are inking deals with Aha as Allu Aravind is an instant decision maker and gives a free hand for experienced directors. The corporate style of work is not which our directors and filmmakers follow. So, several directors are knocking the doors of Aha.

Gulabo Sitabo Review: Tiring and slow-paced

0

Gulabo Sitabo is the first biggie from Indian films that headed for a digital release. Set in Lucknow, the film is directed by Shoojit Sircar. Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana played the lead roles in this slow-paced drama. Rising Sun Films and Kino Works bankrolled the film. Gulabo Sitabo released today on Amazon Prime. Amitabh and Ayushmann deliver top-class performances in their respective roles. Amitabh’s voice and his dubbing bring a fresh breath for the role. His body language looks new and he is well presented.

Ayushmann Khurrana looks natural and he delivers the role of Bankey with utmost ease. Both the lead actors are at loggerheads all the time and this is the USP of the film. The entertainment is not quite appealing. Surprisingly Gulabo Sitabo disappoints in many aspects for those who watched the previous films of Shoojit Sircar and loved his work.

The entire film is set in Lucknow and is shot across rustic locales. Apart from the performances, the background score, the artwork have been extremely supportive. Vijay Raaz, Brijendra Kala, Shrishti Srivastava were good in their roles. Though the film has a beautiful soul, the slow pace kills the film badly.

The climax episodes are well presented which brings the impression that the film is decent. Because of the slow pace, the film sounds lengthy. Some of the episodes are dragged and they fail to make an impact. Though Gulabo Sitabo looks realistic and is backed by honest performances, the overdose of drama and slow pace make this social satire strictly an average fare. On the whole, Gulabo Sitabo is a mixed bag.

Amazon says India lockdown has hit it the hardest internationally

0

Amazon has said that complete COVID-19 lockdown in India since March 24 due to which the ecommerce giant was allowed to sell only groceries and other essential items has resulted in the biggest revenue impact in any country in the international market.

The Indian government has directed the ecommerce platforms to sell only essential goods during the lockdown period that is on till May 3, while it has allowed the opening of standalone retail shops in a bid to ease lockdown restrictions.

Speaking to analysts over an earnings call on Thursday, Amazon chief financial officer Brian Olsavsky said that the demand of the revenue side has been severely impacted in India when compared to other shelter-in-place geographies across the world.

“I think the biggest impact internationally has been in India, where of course, similar to other companies in India, we’re now only fulfilling our essential goods such as grocery,” said Olsavsky.

“So that’s cut back a lot on our offering, and we will further expand when the Indian government announces that were allowed to resume operations. So we’re in a bit of a holding pattern except for grocery in India,” he added.

With the government allowing the opening of standalone retail shops in a bid to ease lockdown restrictions, Amazon has urged the authorities to also let it sell non-essential items so that millions of consumers at home can be benefitted.

According to an Amazon India spokesperson, e-commerce offers the safest way for sellers and retailers to serve the needs of citizens while ensuring social distancing.

“We are committed to keep citizens safe and urge the government to enable e-commerce to play its role in the joint fight against the pandemic by allowing the supply of all goods that people need over a prolonged period,” the company spokesperson said late last month.

Amazon India said that it is committed to serve more than 100 million Indians from the safety of their homes, reduce the number of people who need to step out, while at the same time help hundreds of thousands of small businesses jumpstart their livelihoods in these difficult times.

Amazon India has introduced a partner support fund’ for small and medium business partners in logistics who have been impacted due to the lockdown.

In a statement, Amazon India said that through the one-time disbursement, the fund will support the partners in multiple ways, which includes enabling them to provide financial aid to nearly 40,000 of their staff for the month of April 2020.

Additionally, the fund will help cover some critical fixed infrastructure costs, and support liquidity and cash flow for these businesses as they resume and scale their operations post lockdown.

Amazon India has extended the Amazon Relief Fund to eligible delivery associates who are part of the Delivery Service Partner Programme, Amazon Flex programme and its trucking partners providing transportation support.

Amazon’s new rules irking heroes and producers

0

Tollywood producers are fetching huge amounts through digital streaming rights of Telugu films after the arrival of Amazon, Hotstar, Zee5 and Netflix. Several producers are even ready to release their films on OTT platforms before the theatrical release but the heroes are not ready for the deals. Digital giant Amazon came out with new rules that are irking the lead actors. The digital giant wants the lead actors, directors and technicians to promote the film for them as they are paying a huge amount for the digital rights. They want special video bytes to be shot to promote the film with the digital release date.

Amazon also wants the producers to bear the promotional expenses (paper ads and others with the digital release dates). Though the producers are ready for these promotions, the actors are not ready to promote their films for Amazon. Producers Guild recently met to discuss about the deals and the guidelines, rules to be followed for the digital deals. They discussed about the news rules that are turning a burden for the producers and if they can convince the heroes to follow the rules. A clarity on the new guidelines are expected soon.

Amazon online version didn’t affect Rangasthalam theatrical run?

0

Rangasthalam online version is released on Amazon Prime now. Even though makers tried to postpone it further as theatrical run of the movie is still good, Amazon has decided to release as per the agreement. But surprisingly, this hasn’t affected theatrical run of the movie significantly.

Rangasthalam is holding some good records as of now – like 2 crore gros in RTC X Roads, still running in more than 100 centers and running towards 50 days, and individual single screen records in several small towns. Rangasthalam also holding Non-Baahubali records in most of the theaters . In RTC X roads, Rangsthalam grossed 2 crores in 47 days, making it fastest to do so after Bahubali-2. Even Baahubali 1 took more than 80 days to reach that mark in RTC X Roads.

There was no significant drop in the revenues immediately after the release of online version in Amazon and it proves – if content is really good, not just the piracy but even official release of online version also can’t do much damage to the film.

Google Amazon war: Amazon’s own youtube coming soon

0

The ongoing war between Google and Amazon entered the next level as there are sufficient reports by now that Amazon working on its own youtube. A couple of weeks back, Google announced that it would obliterate the YouTube app from Amazon’s devices like Echo Show and Fire TV. After this, Amazon filed for trademark requests for ‘Amazon Tube’ and ‘Open Tube’. So, by connecting the dots, experts analyzing that Amazon’s own youtube is coming soon.

Dispute began as Amazon decided on the policy of not selling Google-owned products that compete with Amazon devices such as the Chromecast Chromecast Ultra, and Google Home on Amazon platforms. Google has been protesting this policy and finally it decided to retaliate. So, on December 5, Google posted a message that YouTube app on Fire TV devices (Amazon device) would be removed from January 1st, 2018.

Alerted with this, Amazon started working on its own youtube, that would be called Amazontube or opentube. The product description for Amazon Tube or Open Tube nowhere mentions youtube but its long description reminds us of youtube. The description goes like – “non-downloadable pre-recorded audio, visual and audiovisual works via wireless networks on a variety of topics of general interest.”
The description sure sounds a lot like YouTube’s services.

Whether Amazon will actually work through with this till the end and starts this opentube or amazontube or need to be seen. YouTube’s presence in the video-sharing space is huge, and competing with youtube and succeeding in that is definitely be a gargantuan task, even for a giant like Amazon. Several attempts by various other companies have been done to shake youtube but in vein. Moreover, some reports say, Google and Amazon have been trying to resolve their disputes before the end of the year.

Rangasthalam – How Amazon rescued Mythri

0

Ram Charan’s next titled Rangasthalam 1985 is directed by Sukumar and is in final stages of shoot. The film has been initially announced for Dasara release this year but the delay in the shoot pushed the film’s release date. The entire shoot of Rangasthalam 1985 is expected to be wrapped up by the end of December and with huge delay, the budget increased by Rs 20 crores.

With the movie’s release delayed by over seven months, the makers had to pay interests worth Rs 20 crores informed a close source. However it is during this time, the makers have been approached by Amazon Prime Video for the digital rights of Rangasthalam 1985. The movie’s digital rights have been acquired by Amazon for a record price of 2.6 million USD (Rs 17 crores). This is quite huge for a Telugu film and Mythri Movies Makers are a relaxed team now.

Will Amazon digital rights cannibalize theatrical revenue?

0

In olden days, producers used to get major revenues from theatrical run and a little more from audio rights. But later so many other sources of income have been evolved like – TV satellite rights and digital rights. Until recently these digital rights were a small portion but now this also has become as big as dubbing or remake rights. But there is a catch here and if producers do not understand the consequences, in long run it will hurt the very existence of cinema industry.

Nagarjuna – Samantha starrer “Raju gari gadhi2” is releasing within 1 month of release through Amazon. If more movies are screened this way, audience might just wait and watch on Amazon. Of course, this depends on how the deal is structured. To make little more money, producers signing the contacts to screen digitally in a week too. Amazon also will pay more money to producers if they are allowed to screen as soon as possible after the release. So producers are thinking, as the theatrical run is already over (nowadays theatrical run is almost over within 2-3 weeks after the release of the movie), we can get the best deal from Amazon and allow them to screen whenever they want.

But in long term this will have a huge blow on movie ecosystem. Audience who understand that movie can be watched within couple of weeks after release, they may get habituated to watch in Amazon and that will have a huge impact on theatrical revenue of the movie, which is still the number one source for any movie. TFI has to meet and agree on minimum number of days after which movie can be screened digitally or on satellite for the benefit of the industry in long run.

SyeRaa gets a sensational deal from Amazon

Even before the regular shooting has commenced, Megastar Chiranjeevi’s SyeRaa is turning out to be a red hot product in trade circles. The magnum opus, which is going to boast an ensemble cast and to be made as a multilingual film, has reportedly got a mind blowing offer from Amazon.

Telugu360 has exclusively learnt that ‘Amazon India’ has come forward with an irresistible deal for the digital rights of SyeRaa. They have approached the producers for exclusive rights pertaining to the visual content like making videos, teasers and trailers etc. However, SyeRaa producers are yet to take a call on this deal.

The hype surrounding the project and the presence of renowned cast and technical team seem to be one of the reasons why Amazon is eyeing its digital rights.

Amazon searches for second headquarters in North America

0

Online retailer Amazon said that it plans to open a second company headquarters in North America, which will be a full equal to its Seattle headquarters.

The company plans to invest more than $5 billion in construction and expects the second headquarters to create as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs, it said on Thursday.

In choosing the location, Amazon said it has a preference for metropolitan areas with more than one million people, a stable and business-friendly environment, urban or suburban locations with the potential to attract and retain strong technical talent, and communities that think big and creatively when considering locations and real estate options, Xinhua news agency reported.

The company added that the location does not have to be an urban or downtown campus; a similar layout to Amazon’s Seattle campus; or a development-prepped site.

“Amazon HQ2 will bring billions of dollars in up-front and ongoing investments, and tens of thousands of high-paying jobs. We’re excited to find a second home,” Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO, said in a statement.

Amazon estimates that its investments in Seattle from 2010 through 2016 resulted in an additional $38 billion to the city’s economy.

Doubling content that Indians like is Amazon Prime Video formula

0

Creating or finding content that caters to different languages, different age groups and different regions is a challenge — but is also a “cool thing”, say top executives of Amazon Prime Video.

While finding content to meet the need of a “broad range of customers” is tricky, James Farrell, Head of Content, Prime Video, Asia Pacific, and Vijay Subramaniam, Director, Content, Amazon Prime Video India, say they have started to identify what works in the Indian market, and are “doubling that”.

Their formula: Double the hits and skip the rest.

Since launching its video-on-demand service in December last year, every decision pertaining to the market here has been a litmus test for the Amazon Prime Video India. For the executives, the diversity of the country has turned out to be a “cool thing” as well as a challenge.

“The cool thing about being part of Amazon as well as the heaviest obligation is that we have so many different customers around the country… Different languages, different age groups, different gender — and they don’t like the same type of content,” Farrell told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

He said they have tried to make the platform a vessel for different Indian stories.

“The main challenge before we launched was on the content side: About what type of content people want to see. There are so many options — original content, reality, comedy and documentary. So, we started with a little bit of everything and now we are seeing what works,” added Farrell.

Asked how the challenges have changed in the last over six months, Subramaniam said: “It is really very early days for us to think about it. I think we have got a lot of distance to cover… We’re beginning to see what content is more preferred and starting to double down on that.”

The platform offers foreign content in terms of TV shows as well as films, stand-up comedy specials and has planned 18 originals in the fiction category. Patrons can access the content on their mobile phones or laptops at Rs 499 a year.

For the first scripted show, the officials placed their bet on a story of cricket and all the politics and business involved outside the field through “Inside Edge”, starring Angad Bedi, Richa Chadha and Vivek Oberoi.

Now, they have taken their first step towards tapping into the ever-popular reality TV genre in India. Last month, the platform announced it will be create “multiple unscripted Originals” (reality shows) for India.

The line-up comes to life with three new reality shows — “Destination Unknown”, “Comic Kaun” and “The Remix”. The shows will premiere in the first quarter next year.

Farrell says they are studying the Indian market with care, and taking notes to help them establish themselves.

“Salman Khan is a key partner of (one of our) initiatives. He is hugely popular in these areas (tier 2 and tier 3 cities)… (The partnership) is not only to make his films available to those customers but super early even before they go live on TV,” Farrell said while explaining one point from his case study.

The competition is hot among all the streaming services, with Netflix coming out with several shows with Indian talent on board.

Reflecting on that, Farrell said: “There are different ways to watch content and Indian consumers are responding to that. Everybody has got pretty unique business models.”

For the future, Farrell says they will “keep learning and (making) good investments”.
