Bhaagamathie Review – More Chanchala, Less Bhaagamathie

Bhaagamathie Movie Review

Anushka Shetty Bhaagamathie Review

Telugu360 Rating : 2.75/5

Anushka is seen portraying two contrasting roles and what eerie similarities that connect both characters forms the film’s core point. The spooky trailer with spine chilling elements have set a high bar on the film.

The rich production values by UV Creations and the strong technical bravura are likely to be the selling points for this film which is directed by Ashok.

Let’s see if Bhaagamathie can emerge as the first blockbuster of 2018.

Story :

To keep a check on the rising popularity of central minister Mr.Eeswara Prasad ( Jayaram) in his home state, central government deploys CBI joint director vaishnavi on special duty. Idea is to frame illegal cases on Mr.Prasad , who has cleanest image in the state. Chanchala ( Anushka Shetty) is a prisoner , whose past is an IAS officer who had worked as a secretary to Mr. Prasad , long term associated with him. CBI wants to interrogate Chanchala, convince her to lie against Mr.Prasad , so that they can proceed with filing cases againt him. In this process, CBI shifts Chanchala secretely to a decades old bungalow in a forest. Inside the bungalow chanchala starts experience horror with the ghost ( of Bhaagamathie ) to whom the bungalow belongs to.

Rest of the story is about Bhaagamathie’ background, chanchala’s experiences in the interrogation bungalow and how police deal with schizophrenic side of her. What is the curious case of Mr. Eeswara prasad is the real knee jerker.

Performances:

Anushka Shetty rocks as Bhaagamathie in one scene she appears in that role. As Chanchala it is an easy task for her to portray the dual shaded role of an IAS Officer. Jayaram is cool as Mr. Eeswara Prasad, Murali Sharma is adequate as ACP. Prabhas Seenu, Dhanraj and Vidyullata Raman played comedy cops and are okay.

Technicians:

This film belongs to technicians. First is the background score, and next is the sound design. S S Thaman takes all the credit for the good BGM. Also, R Madhi’s cinematography captures the mood well and his camera movements, angles are rightly done for horror scenes. Kotagiri’s editing is crisp except Shakti ( Unni Mukundan) ‘s scenes. Director G. Ashok has come up with novelty in script but end of the film fails to make a solid impact. Production values by UV Creations are grand.

Analysis:

Bhaagamathie film takes off leisurely, sets pace once Chanchala ( Anushka) enters the Bhaagamathie bungalow. Once she enters the bungalow the horror themed scenes are engaging mainly because of audiography. Three four times across the film, audience will experience nice horror elements. With some inconsistent graph, movie reaches towards interval block. Anushka shows up as Bhaagamathie is a high point for the film. Her body language in this scene is a combination of Arundhati and Baahubali Devasena. Thus, by end of first half, though much of the story is not revealed, the right premise was set for second half. Only one song in the film ‘ Mandara Mandara ‘, which is pretty average and can be skipped.

But second half falls short of expectations in terms of horror. Bhaagamathie flashback is narrated verbally, where visual narration would have shown some impact. In addition, when audience are tuned to know more about Bhaagamathie , contrastingly Chanchala’s flashback with Shakti ( Unni Mukundan) sequences open. This is where screenplay failed. In Mid second half a superb twist happens, which is totally unexpected. However, the kick generated because of this twist lives shorter for audience. Sooner the film sets as only a political mind game. Audience might feel being duped at this point (not delving into this as it is a spoiler). Though director tried to cover the bases by explaining with two examples but it appears a forced. Then if we treat the subsequent twists as just a regular revenge formula ones, then the mind game revealed towards the end might be acceptable. However, lack of emotional backed story is the major drawback and gives less impact to the whole drama.

Positives:

  • Sound design & Background score will literally enthrall you if watched in best audio equipped theatres
  • Anushka fits the role perfect
  • Jayaram character is good

Negatives:

  • Entire thread involving chanchala – shakti is poorly written , spans across the film
  • The story takes a knee jerk twist (which initially appears good) deviates from horror genre , ends up as routine stuff
  • Concluding the core element as in-existent is indigestible

Verdict :

Bhaagamathie is an average fare at best. First half has some nice horror thrill moments backed by exemplary Sound design and striking interval episode where Anushka has performed well as Bhaagamathie. As second half progresses, story takes an U-turn and deviates from horror genre to a typical political revenge mind-Game Box-office performance may depends on how well audience perceive these twists towards the end

‘Baahubali 2’: Hype by makers, expectations by fans touch new highs

0

Why did Kattappa kill Baahubali? An enigma that has been on the mind of every Indian since the last 21 months, will finally get unveiled on Friday with the release of “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion”. If trade pundits and films experts are to be believed, filmmaker S.S. Rajamoulis magnum opus will set new benchmarks in Indian cinema.

Released in July 2015, ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ — the first film in the epic fantasy franchise — raked in over Rs 600 crore at the box office while leaving fans amazed with its grandiose sets, unprecedented action sequences and astounding storyline. Thus, fans across the world keenly await “Baahubali 2”, which will release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam in over 6500 screens across India.

The film features Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, Rana Daggubati and Tamannaah in the lead.

“I have sky high expectations from ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ and I believe it’s going to make records. Expectations from first film were not that big. Despite that‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ worked so well. The way it performed is the reason why expectations are so huge from the second part,” Mumbai-based distributor Rajesh Thadani told IANS.

“This film has the potential to create new benchmarks in cinema. There have been films in the past which have had big hype, but ‘Baahubali’ is an exception. It will definitely open doors for the southern industry in other regions,” Thadani added.

Trade expert Taran Adarsh said “Baahubali 2” will get a “hurricane” at the box office, which has not witnessed huge footfalls for the last few weeks now.

“The weather may be hot and humid, but the box office is ice-cold… Await ‘Baahubali 2′ to reactivate film business… Expecting a hurricane at the box office,” Adarsh tweeted last week.

In north India, Delhi-based distributor Joginder Mahajan is expecting a “miracle” with the film.

“Advance booking for the film is doing great. There are discussions going on between exhibitors and distributors regarding the profits in north India. The hype of the film is really huge amongst the masses. It might break all the records at the box office,” Mahajan told IANS.

Ashish Saksena, COO-Cinemas, BookMyShow said that they are witnessing an “unprecedented advance booking” for “Baahubali 2”.

“We have already sold over one million tickets across languages, even when the bookings have been live for just over a day. Though the film is largely perceived to be loved by South Indian audience, the response from Hindi speaking markets has been highly encouraging as well,” Saksena told IANS.

In South, “Baahubali 2” will release in around 650 screens in Tamil Nadu. According to trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai, it’s the biggest release for a film in the state.

“Even Rajinikanth’s ‘Enthiran’ and ‘Kabali’ released in just over 500 screens. The craze for ‘Baahubali’ is phenomenal and unprecedented. The buzz is bigger than it has ever been for a big Tamil film. Tickets are sold out everywhere,” Pillai told IANS.

Unlike other states, where the ticket prices have been hiked in huge numbers, in Tamil Nadu, the film’s ticket is being sold at the nominal price of Rs 120 due to the price cap by the government.

Pillai added that the film’s release timing is perfect.

“It’s the summer vacation for kids. The film is going to have a dream run for first four days as May 1 (Labour Day) happens to be holiday. It’s a very well planned release and I have been told the team locked the release date nearly eight months ago,” he said.

In Kerala, meanwhile, Global United Media is releasing the film in over 300 screens.

“This is the biggest release ever for a non-Malayalam film. This is the kind of film which doesn’t get made every day. Since the release of ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’, the total number of theatres in Kerala has increased which has automatically paved the way for a wider release for the second part.

“The film is going to set new benchmarks for Indian cinema,” Prem Menon, Managing Director, Global United Media, told IANS.

The buzz around the film’s release is even higher in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, say experts.

So, one can say that the stage is perfectly set for “Baahubali 2” to prove is mettle and set new records in Indian cinema.

Rajamouli gave me whole arc of a woman’s life: Anushka

0

Actress Anushka Shetty, who essays the role of Devasena in “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion”, says that the film’s director S.S. Rajamouli has given her a whole arc of a womans life.

During an interview on CNN-News18’s “Now Showing”, she said that people rarely get to play a character who transforms from a young person to an old lady, read a statement from the channel.

“I feel Rajamouli has given me a whole arc of a woman’s life… from being a young girl to a woman, a mother… it’s beautiful,” Anushka said.

Asked about why Katappa killed Baahubali, Anushka said it would be unfair to let out the answer to the million-dollar question before the movie releases on Friday.

“It would be unfair only to let out the why… the way the story has been scripted, the screenplay and how it’s been shot has such lovely moments. The emotions and all are so much deeper. Even those of us who have worked on it are looking forward to watch the magic on screen,” she said.

In the film, she essays a dual role — wife to Prabhas’s character and his mother.

Anushka says initially such roles do feel awkward but “it becomes easier when you have a director like Rajamouli, who is so clear about what he wants and he guides you through it”.

The interview will be aired on Friday.

More Confident About Baahubali 2 Than Baahubali: SS Rajamouli

Baahubali broke the language barrier to become a pan-Indian hit in 2015 but director S S Rajamouli says he was not as sure-footed about the first part as he is for the upcoming sequel Baahubali: The Conclusion. The first movie ended on a cliffhanger, leaving the audience with the question- ‘Why did Katappa kill Baahubali?’, which became a catch-phrase and sustained interested in the sequel.

“We were a little nervous during the first part but for this one we are quite confident because there has been a big fan-base which has been following it since the past two years. During this time, none of them lost interest in the film and it kept on going,” Rajamouli says. “Everyone wants to know the answer to the question,

‘WKKP’ (Why Did Katappa Kill Baahubali). We are quite upbeat about it,” he told reporters here last evening.

The two-part epic-fantasy stars Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Tamannaah and Anushka Shetty in lead roles. Rajamouli says it was wonderful of South Indian star Prabhas to dedicate himself fully for years to Baahubali despite being a top hero of the industry. “The whole film ‘Baahubali’ was possible because of this man (Prabhas) who being a top hero in south gave three and a half years for the film. I don’t think we could’ve done it (the film) without him,” he says.

The filmmaker, however, says the franchise is so huge that no person, including himself, can be bigger than the project. “I think whether the director or producer or any other professional involved in it, we are all being carried on a big ship called Baahubali,” he says.

“‘Baahubali’ is such a big thing, we being the people who worked on it, are getting the attention. I don’t think I am a bigger person than the project,” Rajamouli says. He was speaking at the IMAX poster launch of Baahubali: The Conclusion, which is scheduled to release on April 28.

Tamannaah to play deaf, mute in new film

0

Actress Tamannaah Bhatia, who is all geared up for the release of her upcoming magnum-opus “Baahubali 2”, reveled that her next is with Vashu Bhagnani where she plays a deaf and dumb’s character.

“‘Baahubali’ helped me to realise that people want me to do different characters like now I have shot for a film in which I play a deaf and mute girl, gone completely sans make-up. It is a Hindi film produced by Vashu Bhagnani sir,” Tamannaah said during an interview on Thursday.

“I am also collaborating with Prabhu (Prabhudeva) sir again, but in a completely different framework. So, it would be very interesting for audience, who have seen us before, to watch us in completely different characters and framework,” added Tamannaah who was last seen with Prabhudeva and Sonu Sood in “Tutak Tutak Tutiya”.

Talking about the success of “Baahubali”, Tamannaah proudly said: “We have always looked upon Hollywood superheroes like Super-Man and Spider-man but ‘Baahubali’ is our own Indian Superhero and the connection people have made with this franchise is unprecedented.”

Asked about the re-release of the first part into theatres, she said: “It’s an honour for any actor to say that their movie is re-released after two years. I am happy that people are supporting the format of having the movie in two parts and that’s what makes it interesting. This will encourage other movie makers to make films in parts.”

While all other characters remain the same, Anushka Shetty will be seen in a new avatar in this movie. Asked about her experience of working with Anushka, Tamannaah said: “I have known her since the beginning of my career. She is the one who helped me in the beginning of my career. I wanted a costume designer and she helped me with it. She has actually enjoyed the five most peak years of her career in this film, which is a lot for a mainstream actress like her.”

What was the most interesting part in shooting the biggest blockbuster of Indian cinema? Tamannaah said: “I did a fullfledged action in a movie for the first time in my career. I had a lot of fear of height but ‘Baahubali’ has helped me overcome it.”

“Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion” that will finally answer the most awaited answer as to Why Kattapa Killed Baahubali will hit the screens on April 28.

The film is directed by S.S. Rajmouli with Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, Tamannaah, Ramya Krishnan, Nassar and Satyaraj in pivotal roles.

‘Baahubali’ was possible because of Prabhas, says Rajamouli

Filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli says a magnum opus like the two-part “Baahubali” could be possible thanks to an actor like Prabhas, who has dedicated so much time to the project.

Rajamouli was at an event here for the IMAX poster launch of “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” on Wednesday.

Praising Prabhas, Rajamouli said: “The whole film ‘Baahubali’ was possible because of Prabhas, who being a lead actor in the south film industry, believed in this project and gave three and half years of his life to the film. I don’t think anybody can get so much involved in the project with that kind of passion, time and commitment.”

“I think whether director or producer or any other professional involved in it, we are all being carried on a big ship called ‘Baahubali’. ‘Baahubali’ is the ultimate product and we are the people who worked on it, so I don’t think I am a bigger person than the project,” added Rajamouli when asked about how a filmmaker often gets less attention compared to his film.

Speaking about the IMAX experience, he said: “It was 15 years ago when I first saw a film in IMAX format. In our childhood, we used to see film on 70mm screens and then suddenly we got this larger than life experience in IMAX, through which we literally felt like being in that space and time itself.

“So the first image I saw, and I decided to make my films in IMAX format. And today, when the dream has got fulfilled, it’s a quality moment for me.”

“Baahubali 2” has been digitally remastered in the IMAX format.

Its story lent itself to the format, Rajamouli said, adding: “People need to see it on bigger screens with wider sound to experience what we intended to see.”

“We have big theatres now but we still need more number of theatres to take the audience there. It’s a business model now to release the film in maximum number of theatres to get maximum viewership. And for a film like ‘Baahubali’, where people are anticipating so much about the movie that trailer of the film has crossed 100 million views is on par with any Hollywood film.

“So, it makes all sense to release the film at maximum number of theatres.”

The movie also features Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, Ramya Krishnan in pivotal roles.

Om Namo Venkatesaya movie review, Nagarjuna ONV movie rating

ONV review, Om Namo Venkatesa

TELUGU360 RATING  3.5/5

Star hero Akkineni Nagarjuna and legendary filmmaker K.Raghavendra Rao are known for delivering devotional hits like Annamayya, Sri Ramdasu and Shirdi Sai. The hit combination is set to weave magic again with yet another devotional outing Om Namo Venkatesaya. After a huge round of promotions, Om Namo Venkateshaya is all set to hit the screens today. Let’s us see if the hit combination of Nag – KRR repeats the magic or not.

Story:

Set in 16th century, Om Namo Venkatesaya , is about Raama – an ardent devotee of Lord Sri Venkateswara. Being so fascinated by the appearance of the Lord, Rama ( Nagarajuna) visits Tirumala temple often and spends time looking at the lord continuously. Finding it suspicious, temple authoritarian Govindarajulu (Rao Ramesh) , orders his men to push Raama out of the temple premises. Dejected Raama, begins constructing an ashram on Tirumala. At the same time he leads other devotees in their revolt against Govindarajulu who doesn’t follow Aagama Shastram.
Impressed by his dedication, Lord first appears in his dream and later in real, plays dice with his devotee. One day Lord loses all his Gold ornaments to Raama in dice. Around the same time, some miscreants steal the gold ornaments belonging to Tirumala temple. Temple authorities and the emperor suspects Raama might have done the theft and raids his aashram. Knowing about the presence of ornaments at Raama’s aashram, emperor orders to take him to custody.

Rest of the story is how and why Raama becomes Hathiram Bavaji ! At the end, Raama requests Lord to take his life away by performing Sajeeva Samadhi near his aashram .

Performances:

Casting is the main strength of “Om NamO Venkatesaya “. While writing about performances, reviewers have a tendency of using “one of the career best performances” so casually, so often. But, in this film, Nagarjuna’s performance is truly lives up to such statements. In Annamaya, Ramadasu movies he performed well but in those films his character was elevated because of the depth & finesse of real characteristics of Annamayya & Ramadasu apart from his performance. Playing the role of Hathiram Bavaji is relatively more challenging as people knew little about Hathiram. Only with performance one has to elevate the character in such circumstances, a good actor always performs with panache. Nagarjuna is one such, hats off for his confident portrayal of a devotee.

Sourabh Raaj Jain as Lord Balaji is a superb choice. His divine looks were already popular in mythological roles such as Srikrishna in TV Mahabharata, and now as Sri Venkateshwara Swami he is top class. He looked little bit young though.Anushka as Krishnamma got good role. Her costumes, pleasant face appeals to the audience. Pragya Jaiswal as Raam’s sister-in-law got a smaller role. In one song , K.Raghavendra rao mark artistic and glamourous portrayal of Pragya Jaiswal appeals to youth.Sampath Raj as emperor, Rao Ramesh as Govindarajulu are just OK. Brahmanandam played an insignificant role.Jagapathibabu’s special appearance is a surprise, has one song with Anushka. However, his role is insignificant.

Analysis:

In Om Namo Venkatesaya , director K.Raghavendra Rao sticks to the core devotional point. Devotee Hathiram’s story doesn’t have Sri Ramadasu like arresting conflict point, nor Annamayya’s like emotional outbursts … yet in this film, the director manages to get our attention. He smartly fills the scenes explaining the concepts like Significance of Swamivari Sesha Vasthram, Agni Teerdham, Venkatagiri and details about rituals like Nitya Kalyanam. This movie is a divine travelogue about Venkateshwara swami / Tirumala at times.First half of the movie is backed by 4 superb songs, while second half is better with core story and the climax is emotional.

Negatives:

  • Two songs are unnecessary drag especially at the times when movie is a bit slow while pathos
  • Lack of  as much as emotional depth of previous installments in these bhakti series
  • Lord and Devotee playing dice scenes are redundant

Behind the screen:

When K. Raghavendra Rao and M.M Keeravani join hands, a musical is assured and Om Namo Venkatesaya is no exception. Background score by Keeravani is fine as well. Producer A. Mahesh Reddy has spent adequate money on this film to look grand. Dialogues by J.K. Bharavi are just average, should have been better. As the film is set in 16th century, he has taken almost current day’s slang at times. Cinematography by S.Gopal Reddy captures K.Raghavendra Rao’s presentation well. The lighting schema for songs, 16th century Tirumala sets are good.

Songs that stand out:

  • “Entho Anandam..” shot on Nagarjuna , pragya jaiswal
  • “Veyi Namala vaada venkatesudaa..” shot on Anushka
  • Song that comes as background while Swami Nija roopa darshanam – Sung by Keeravani – “Brahmanda Bhandamula pal sobagula..”
  • “Akhilanda koti brahmanda nayaka ..”- is the highlight in the movie
  • Shankar Mahadevan’s “Pareeksha” song
  • Some other songs are Govinda Chantings and few are pretty average and couple of them could have been edited

Verdict:

Om Namo Venkatesaya is an effectively made film about Lord venkateswara’s one of the greatest devotees Hathiram Bavaji. Devotional Songs and Nag’s finest performance, Sourabh Raj Jain as Lord are the movie strengths. K. Raghavendra rao deserves an applause for sticking to the core story. Emotionally this film is not on par with Annamayya, but a MUST watch for devotees and a decent watch for all.
