Vijay’s Master digital streaming shocks trade circles

Tamil actor Vijay tasted a solid hit with Master. The film released during Sankranthi and it is still having a decent box-office run. The film is still going strong across the major territories of Tamil Nadu. The Telugu theatrical rights are valued at Rs 9 crores and the film will collect over Rs 15 crores in its final run. The digital streaming rights of Master are acquired by Amazon Prime and the streaming was planned on February 12th. In a sudden surprise, Amazon announced that the film will be available on the digital platform from January 28th from 10:15 PM.

This is a huge shock for the distributors as the film is still minting money and will have a theatrical run for a couple of weeks more. Amazon is said to have offered a massive price for the digital rights and this may be the reason for the plan. Master is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi, Malavika Mohanan played the lead roles in this mass entertainer.

Producers Council to take a call on Dubbed Releases?

1

Krack producer Tagore Madhu approached the Producer’s Council over the recent theatres issue for his film in Sankranthi season. The film’s Nizam distributor Warangal Srinu alleged that Dil Raju and Sirish ignored Krack and lent their support for other films. An urgent meeting was planned last evening and Krack will get more number of screens from today. But this doesn’t make any difference argued some of the producers and filmmakers as the holiday season came to an end and the film is now running in decent number of screens. We have an industry where openings and first week numbers are very crucial for any film.

There is a debate going on about the dubbing movies getting a major number of screens during the holiday season which is turning out to be a dent for the revenues of Telugu movies. A couple of years ago, there was a huge debate when Rajinikanth’s Petta was announced for Sankranthi 2019 release. Neither the Film Chamber of Commerce or the Producers Council came to a firm stand about the release of the dubbed films during any holiday season. Some of the filmmakers strongly argue that the situations are not the same in Tamil Nadu and they give top priority for Tamil films after which the screens are shared for the films of neighboring languages.

If Vijay’s Master release was pushed in AP and Telangana, all the three Telugu releases Krack, RED and Alludu Adhurs would have minted more money and generated more revenues which is direct or indirect help for Telugu cinema. They would have shared the screens allocated for Master. The active producers and other filmmakers are raising the issue after a conflict arises and it is left in the backseat without finding the best solution. Hope a proper resolution will be locked at the earliest before such issues create tremors in Telugu cinema and among the filmmakers. The governing bodies should form a council to stage a hunt for the right solution. Else, more number of producers and distributors would head for a fight which will not be a great sign for Telugu cinema,

Vijay’s Master is a disaster in Bollywood

2

Vijay’s latest film Master released in all the major Indian languages and the collections are exceptional in Tamil Nadu and the film is doing decent business in Telugu states and Kerala. The Telugu theatrical rights are valued at Rs 10 crores and the buyers entered into the profit zone already. The collections are rock solid in Tamil Nadu. But things are completely different across the North Indian circuits.

Master opened to poor occupancy and minimal footfalls in Bollywood. The numbers are quite poor that the buyers will even fail to recover the digital charges for the film. Though there are no prominent releases during this season, the audience are not much interested to watch the film in theatres. Vijay’s movies are watched well on small screen but the theatrical response is quite poor. Master is directed by Khaidi fame Lokesh Kanagaraj and Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi, Shruti Haasan are the lead actors in this mass entertainer.

Nizam theatres issue: Mahesh S Koneru condemns allegations

Young producer Mahesh S Koneru acquired the Telugu theatrical rights of Vijay’s Master. The film opened to packed houses and is running successfully in Telugu states. A couple of days ago, Krack Nizam distributor Warangal Srinu made serious allegations on top distributor and producer Dil Raju. He alleged that Raju kept a hold of all the screens and provided a limited number to Krack and most of the screens are removed for the movie. Mahesh S Koneru responded to the allegation:

“It is quite bad to stage personal attacks and it is always wise to resolve the issues through discussions. Master is a pan Indian film and it needs a same-day release in all the languages. Master released in over 150 screens in Nizam and the number of theatres came down to 75 from day two. The film opened to packed houses and the revenues are shared by Telugu distributors and exhibitors. This is a major boost to Telugu film industry which has been in crisis. It is not good to attack a person as per my opinion. The theatres are shared across all the films during Sankranthi season and all the movies are doing good”.

“We have to solve the issues personally. English doesn’t have anything to do with the business. Warangal Srinu should have spoken about the topic. Today Master is running in the least number of theatres in Nizam, but I am very happy. The revenues are grand and everyone should share the revenues in this season. It depends on the distributor completely about holding the screens of the region. This may vary from district to district. Vijay gained a phenomenal market in Telugu states and the day one numbers of Master proved it. I was informed about getting the last priority as it is a dubbed film. I am happy with the performance of the film even after getting fewer screens in Telugu states” told Mahesh S Koneru.

“All the other businesses are revived completely but theatres are not granted 100 percent occupancy. The concerned authorities should consider and grant full occupancy soon. This would help the industry recover soon. Dil Raju and Shirish supported me right from the first day and I cannot forget the support of them for 118. I never faced any problems with them. They cannot stand as successful and top distributors if they are not transparent” told Mahesh.

Critically acclaimed Logesh could not dare “Sukumar way”

1

When Master movie was announced in the communication of Logesh Kanagaraj and Vijay, expectations skyrocketed as Logesh recently gave a movie that is a blockbuster hit and yet critically acclaimed in the form of “Khaithi”. But once the movie is released it is clear that Logesh too joined that bandwagon of directors who don’t dare to do experiments when they have superstars at their helm.

The conundrum that the creative directors face:

There were many directors in the past who got the chance to direct top stars after giving a critically acclaimed and yet successful movie. The actual litmus test for the director starts after getting the chance because now the audience is keen to see whether the director chooses to make the movie in his style or he will subsume himself and make a regular mass movie that the fans of the hero habituated to see. Some directors dare to make the movies in their own style irrespective of who the star is. On the other hand, most of the directors prefer to make regular potboilers for the masses.

Sukumar way:

Sukumar is one director in recent times who made movies in his own style irrespective of the star casting. His movies with Mahesh Babu, Jr NTR and Ram charan prove that he has enough courage to go slightly offbeat from the regular mainstream of Tollywood. His Rangasthalam movie not only created a sensation at the box office but also brought the real actor out of Ram Charan. Even when a mass hero like Jr NTR is at the helm, he preferred to make the movie in his style instead of giving in to make a movie of Jr NTR style.

Logesh disappointed his fans by making a regular Vijay movie

Logesh earned critical acclaim for his Kaithi movie as the movie has broken many formulas of regular commercial movies. When the movie is announced in the combination of Vijay and Logesh, and especially when it is revealed that Vijay Sethupathi is the main villain in the movie. But the movie ended up as one more regular Vijay movie with too many slow-motion scenes and elevation scenes that are the norm for any Vijay movie. Even Vijay Sethupathi role is also a usual villain role though the actor made it interesting with his impeccable performance. Finally, the movie ended up as “Strictly for fans (of both the leads)” movie.

Overall, it looks like Logesh doesn’t have the guts to make critically acclaimed movies with the superstars. Though there are some scenes in the movie that show Logesh’s attempts to strike a balance and find the middle way, the balance is heavily tilted towards the star hero and routine mass elements.

Tamil Nadu government permits 100 percent occupancy for theatres

1

The Centre issued guidelines for patrons watching films in Indian theatres. Only 50 percent of the seats are to be sold considering the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The Centre even extended the guidelines till the end of January. In a major boost, the government of Tamil Nadu issued new guidelines permitting 100 percent occupancy for theatres in Tamil Nadu. This is a major boost for Vijay’s upcoming movie Master that is hitting the screens for Sankranthi 2021.

Vijay recently met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswami and requested him to grant 100 percent occupancy for the theatres in the state to save the exhibition industry. With this move, we have to wait to see if the other state governments would permit 100 percent occupancy in the theatres and multiplexes across the states. Coming to Tollywood, Ravi Teja’s Krack, Ram’s RED and Bellamkonda Sreenivas’ Alludu Adhurs are aimed for release during the Sankranthi season.
