Janatha Garage Review : An Intense Action Drama !

0

Janatha Garage Review

TELUGU360.com  Rating 3/5

Story:

Janatha Garage story has depth and character in it. It has an underlying message; an intense drama blended it in unique style.

Flashback: Set in 1980s, Satyam Garu ( Mohanlal) runs a mechanic shop named ‘Janatha Garage’ which also functions as a Praja Darbaar in Hyderabad. Eventually, it becomes thorn in the flesh of crooked politicians and they kill the brother of Satyam. Satyam sends off his brother’s little kid to Mumbai to be with his relatives.

Present day: The kid grows up as Anand (Tarak) who is an environmental science student. Anand is very passionate about nature and educates the people around him to protect the Mother Nature. Knowing that Anand has developed rivalry with a local MLA in Mumbai , Anand family sends him to Hyderabad for temporary visit, fearing backlash from the MLA. Meanwhile at Hyderabad, Janatha Garage activities slow down due to attack on Satyam (Mohanlal). Due to an incident, Anand meets Satyam and after realizing Anand’s conviction and potentiality Satyam invites him to join Janatha Garage. Anand joins hands with Satyam and rest of the story is how both of them together help the needy people in the society.

Analysis:

Janatha Garage is an author-backed story that has been told with conviction. In Telugu, rarely we see movies in which strong characterizations overpower the stardom and Janatha Garage is one such movie. This movie becomes more intense when such characterizations are backed by brilliant actors such as Mohanlal and NTR. These two blessed artists, with their screen presence and acting prowess, will be appreciated by one and all in this movie. Koratala siva’s directorial skill and dialogues competed with each other for major part of the movie. Government office scene with Rajeev Kanakala is a testament to this. Both dialogues and execution are top-notch in this scene. Unni Mukundan, Saikumar did justice to their roles. Nitya Menen and Samantha got very short roles as most of the drama and screen time has been shared between NTR and Mohanlal.

However, the narration is slower throughout and few scenes are hackneyed. First half is just OK as the director tried to set the ground for emotional second half. In second half, from start until the item song … the heroism elevation, Rajiv Kanakala episode, Jayaho Janatha Song followed by Pakka Local item song and all worked out well. Staring with the ‘City bomb blasts’ episode, the director lost grip on the narration and from there the movie goes down hill.

The last 30 minutes of the movie is a huge let down. With very routine and abrupt climax, movie comes to an end. Audience expecting a gripping emotional movie with ensemble cast will feel disappointed coming out of the theater.

When it comes to NTR Jr., What a transformation !? from a mass hero to all class appealing roles, the way he molded himself is commendable.

Songs:

Highlight Song of the movie is Kajal’s ‘Pakka Local’. It was choreographed well, both NTR and Kajal danced superbly for this song. ‘Pranamam Pranamam’ and ‘Rock on Bro..’ songs do appeal to class audience. Artwork in ‘Apple Beauty’ song is super classy and this stylish number appeals to youth. Montage song ‘Jayaho Janatha.’ was placed at right time, elevates the emotion.

Positives:

  • Intense characterization of Mohanlal as Satyam
  • Equally brilliant portrayal of Anand character by NTR
  • Koratala Siva’s thoughtful dialogues
  • Excellent background music by DSP
  • Cinematography by Thirunavukarasu is top-notch
  • Superb star casting – Even for insignificant roles, experienced and best in class artists been roped in
  • All Songs
  • Message oriented movie, which highlights importance of Environmental friendlyness

Negatives:

  • Last 25 minutes of the movie is dull
  • Narration is slow paced at times
  • Less comedy scenes
  • Mohanlal’s son character is not well established
  • No proper role for heroines

Verdict:

Janatha Garage first half is decent and second half is better except the climax. One must appreciate the Star heroes NTR , Mohanlal and the director for believing in the subject and sticking to the core point of the movie. For NTR fans, there are ample heroism elevation elements for their delight. Overall, Koratala Siva has missed a blockbuster with a weak climax. You may watch it once with ease.

“Brahmotsavam” Audio Review : Trendy and Upbeat

0

Brahmotsavam Audio Review,Brahmotsavam Songs JukeBox

Srikanth Addala’s style of movie-making usually concentrates on screenplay than a fully-fleshed-out thread of a story and  gives larger-than-life imagery with titles that speak a thousand words. “Brahmotsavam” raised expectations with a big-bang title that promises to offer summer-cool experience to the audiences. The release dates locked in May 20th as announced by the Superstar. As a director, he hasn’t changed Mickey J Meyer as a music composer since his debut film “Kotha Bangaru Lokam”. The audio has seven tracks with zingy beats, neat lyrics and trendy rhythms. Mickey J Meyer scored hit music for the film “Kerintha”. After that, “Brahmotsavam” seems all set to make waves with a good mix of numbers mostly fast-paced that register well on first hearing. As a composer, Mickey gives you an impression of a dedicated composer who strains to give us good tunes that are rich in instrumentation and melody.

Song 1: Vachindi Kada  Avakasam
Singer : Abhay Jodhpurkar
Lyrics :Srinivennela Seetharama Sastry

The first song which was already captured in the teaser few months back has all the ingredients of a family bonding song that builds into a crescendo where everybody shouts “Vanga ru Vanga Ru Vanga”. With words like “Kulaasa” and “Hailessa”, lyrics give you booster doses of energy with a life philosophy that is sporting and celebratory. Most of Mickey’s recent songs have fewer singers who repeat many of his songs in a track.  Abhay’s voice in this song  gets you into the grooves with words like ABCD (Anybody can dance). The music reminds you of some popular Brazilian beats of Samba-style music when you hit the peak note of “Vanga Ru Vanga Ru” and also takes off from prominent Indie Pop musicians like Abby. The song introduces guitar to push the tempo up.

As we are engrossed, read another article just posted --> Brahmotsavam review Live updates Collections overseas talk

Song 2: Madhuram Madhuram
Singers : Padma and Sridevi

This song, an adaptation of ‘Madhurashatakam’, is the shortest song in the album with a running time of 2.14 mins The Madhurashtakam is an ode to the Lord Shri Krishna, unique composition by Shri Vallabhacharya ( year 1535) which describes the Sweetness of Lord Shri Krishna. The Madhurashtakam uses just one adjective, “Madhuram”, meaning sweet or beautiful, to describe the lovely attributes of Lord Sri Krishna.

Song 3: Brahmotsavam
Singer : Sri Rama Chandra
Lyrics : Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry

The title track of the album has all the ingredients of energy, pace and melody rendered beautifully by Sriram. Glimpses of the song’s visuals show stunning and exotic holiday with Mahesh and Samantha. The song starts exactly like the first song with single piano bass sounds that reach a shrill chorus before they collapse more instruments into an ascending medley of sounds that breaks out into the philosophy of “Brahmotsavam”. The song has a lovely blend of computerised sounds and a techno beat instrumentation that breaks you into footloose moods. Use of different bass piano as interludes elevates the moods to different hallucinations of the mind while Sriram’s voice keeps expanding into chorus lyrics of “Brahmotsavam”. The strength of Mickey J Meyer as an instrumentalist is evident in this song – it has pace, melody and clarity of lyrics – a rare combination for a music director. Sri Rama Chandra’s speedy rendition makes even the subtlest of Sirivennela’s lyrics clear.

Song 4: Aata Paatalaadu
Singer : Karthik
Lyrics : Srikanth Addala

Karthik sings this song – somewhat slowest of the lot which has message-oriented lyrics. The song travels through low pitch to the resounding peak that Karthik’s range can deliver even as the tempo tries to push you into a sober mood. The song seems to be a solo or a background song at a crucial point in the film but there is a deja vu’ touch to the song – you have heard some of the interludes but it seems to grow on you slowly.

Song 5: Naidorintikada
Singers: Anjana Soumya and Ramya Behara

The only song without a computerized rhythms and village folksy touch, the two female voices of Anjana Soumya  and Ramya Behara.  Naidorintikada give a nice contrast to the solo tune that doesn’t let up till the song gets over – the pitch and the tempo keeps pushing up the volume up and up while having a good grip on the melody of the song. Reminds you of the song “Jagadeeka Veera lera” from “Kerintha” which has been one of Anjana Soumya’s greatest hits. The song gives a good break from the other songs with a lilting folksy touch that haunts you to listen to it again and listen.

Song 6: Bala Tripuramani
Singer : Rahul Nambiar
Lyrics: Krishna Chaitanya

This is the best sound track of the album with a contemporary western beat that promises to catch on with the youth. Reminds you of the first song in “Sitamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu”, the song has all the melody and magic of a peppy Mickey number with some fantastic lyrics that fit so well. There is an Africo-celt strain of a tribal beat that breaks out every time singer Rahul Nambiar completes his breath with a chorus encore. Using such tribal beats is not new to Mickey but embedding them with a different and catchy percussions and embellishing them with his inimitable style is what makes this song a special number.

Song 7: Put Your Hands up
Singers: Sravana Bhargavi , Mickey.J.Mayer
Lyrics: Krishna Chaitanya

An average song that seems like a medley that comes in end titles. The song is the only disappointing number unless the picturisation gives it a different spin. There is a connection somewhere to the title theme but you have to listen hard to make it out subtly.

Suriya’s ’24’ Review : Brilliant but Boring At Times

24 Movie Review , 24 Telugu Movie Review

Touted as a science fiction thriller,’24’ movie stars Surya, Samantha and Nitya Menon in the lead roles. The intriguing posters and the stunning teaser have created a lot of buzz on the film. Directed by ‘Manam’ fame Vikram Kumar, music for 24 is composed by A.R. Rahman. Hero Suriya himself produced the film on 2D Entertainment banner, and also played three roles in this film. Released amidst much hype as VFX and graphical extravaganza film and initial social media euphoria, let us see what ‘24’ has to offer.

Story (Spoiler-Free) : 24 movie has a path breaking story that was never attempted on Indian screen. Dr.ShivaKumar (Surya) is a scientist whose research is to invent a hand watch that is capable of time travelling a person. When the research is about to be fruitful, Aathreya (Surya) who is a rich baddy and twin brother of Dr.Shiva tries to snatch the watch from Shiva’s laboratory. In that process Aathreya kills Shiva’s wife. Shiva with his infant baby tries to escape from the scene along with Watch. Chasing them, Aathreya kills Shiva as well, but before dying Shiva Kumar hands over the baby and watch to a lady in the train.

Rest of the story is how the kid grows as Mani (again Surya), finds the watch. Then a spectacular mind game between Mani and Aathreya unveils.

Analysis:

’24’ movie has very engaging script on paper but after converting it to a full length cinema and due to insertion of Surya-Samantha love track and other filler elements, the main plot got diluted and overall movie pace has slowed down considerably., Few scenes at the beginning are extraordinary. Art work for Dr.Shivakumar’s home, his laboratory, villain’s convoy and train tracks etc is fabulous. A different world has been established. Once the story forwards by 26 years, then things got slowed down until Aathreya strikes back. Director Vikram Kumar tried to create a different ambience and in that process lost the soul of the movie. Not only for Telugu audience, even Tamil audience might not see any nativity in the movie. Mani’s home and the colony set are very weird. This is where director Shankar scores. Shankar keeps the main plot simple and then and uses Creative/VFX and takes us to a different level. Vikram Kumar got the main theme right and has failed in auxiliary elements. Neither sentiment nor romance connects us emotionally.

Suriya has played all three roles with exemplary ease. As wheel chair ridden Aathreya, he exhibits his career best performance. Tamil heroes have penchant for donning 4-5 getup in a movie just for sake of it, but in this movie story is very apt for Surya to don 3 roles. Samantha got a limited role, nothing much to talk about her role. Ajay got Aathreya’s assistant roles and played well.

The way time travel concept has been explained to common man is good, but at some point we’ll get bored with repetitive usage of time freeze technique. Director’s brilliance is showcased in last 20 to 30 minutes of the movie, all the open ends are connected and time travel technique is aptly narrated. Vikram Kumar has showed finesse around time travel concept. Especially the scene when all characters move back to 1990 and re-starts the proceedings is dealt with great skill. This is not an easy task even for a seasoned director. He closed all the open ends properly. Out of 2 hour 45 minutes movie, approximately the 1 hour 15 minutes or so , while Aathreya is on screen, movie is OK. But rest of the 1 hour 30 minutes is boring

All three songs were shot stylishly and are great on screen visually, but again that visual marvel is not effective because of  lack of proper lead scenes or lack of chemistry between hero heroine.

A.R.Rehman’s background score is of international quality at times, but lack of BGM or dull BGM in few scenes made those already dull scenes more dull. Cinematographer S.Tirru has done outstanding job in producing slick visuals

Positives:

Suriya as Aathreya
Bold story
Excellent visuals in songs
Brief VFX work initially
Climax

Negatives:

Lack of nativity
Samantha’s family irritates
Lag in both halves

Verdict : This is neither a Sci-Fi thriller nor a VFX movie. ’24’ is a slow paced family drama with a backdrop of time travel. Time travel part has been etched very well brilliantly, rest is just OK. You may watch it once with patience, that too go without any expectations around VFX. Initial social media euphoria may not withstand, and at Telugu Box-office it may struggle to recover the moolah, considering the upcoming biggies.
