Spy has a below par weekend with huge drop after the opening day. The film has collected 8.8 Cr share worldwide with gross at 19.4 Cr. Theatrical rights of the film are valued at 18 Cr and the film will find tough from Monday onwards. It is heading for a disaster or in the best case the film is a flop at the box-office as there is a free run till the end of next week.

The film has collected a distributor share of 4.5 Cr with gross at 10.2 Cr. Theatrical rights of the film in Telugu states are valued at 4 Cr with Andhra sold in 2 Cr ratio, Ceeded 50 lakhs & Nizam valued at 1.5 Cr. Nizam area will be over the borderline today and some areas in Andhra will cross it today. Ceeded area needs a decent run till end of next weekend which is quite possible and it’s likely that all parties will be in profits. Worldwide rights are valued at 5 Cr. The film is a Hit at the box-office and it needs to be seen if it can attain Super Hit status with a free run.

Story :

Jay( Nikhil) is a raw agent who is on a mission to checkmate Glodal terrorist Khadir Khan. Jay’s another task is to find who killed his brother, Subhash ( Aryan Rajesh) who died in a five year old mission. Another dimension to the script is a missing file related to Netaji Subhash Chandrabose. Rest of the film is about how Jay is able to resolve all three points.

Analysis :

Spy script is an overambitious one.The team has included all the keywords that are of global scale but the direction is of Ameerpet league. When we need to make a film on international secret services agent, apparently it needs to be on a mega budget and solid casting.Alternative approach is a small scale one with smart writing and engaging direction. Unfortunately, Spy film misses all above checkmarks. Only one thread in this film succeeded partially is when it talks around Netaji Subhash Chandrabose. The controversy surrounding his disappearance, His principles etc episodes play to the galleries well. That is the only saving grace of the film.

Production values are adequate if we measure from a typical Telugu film point of view . But the budget is sub par for the given theme.

The script is so silly that at somepoint, the film shows the proceedings cause China Vs India war. The terrorist Khadir Khan episodes are so monotonous. The second half introduces another villain ( Jisshu sengupta ) but still remains ineffective.Garry Bh direction is not adequate. Cinematography by Mark David is good. Background score by sricharan is okay.

Performances :
Nikhil is fine as RAW agent ‘ Jay ‘. But not as effective as his previous outings. Abhinav Gomatam one liners are fine from comedy angle, but watching him as On field raw agent is a joke on audience. Atleast, his character should have been limited to a backoffice agent. Makarand Deshpande as Raw Chief overacts in many scenes. Jissu Sengupta is just Ok. Iswarya Menon acted as an NIA agent. Nitin Mehta as Khadir Khan is good pick but he could have got more screen presence.

Verdict :

SPY film has big ideas with mediocre execution. The scenes written around Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose are a bit consolation in this template film. The scripts written around International SPY theme demand huge budget , which apparently one cannot match. Overall, SPY film could have been better.

Nikhil’s SPY is scheduled for release on 29 th June ie, tomorrow. The film has been sold for record prices all over for the hero. Theatrical rights of the film are valued at 18 Cr (including Hindi Version). Made in a budget of 20 Cr the producer of the film has made very good profits with 18 Cr coming from theatrical rights , 18 Cr from digital(all versions)/satellite (Telugu). There are still the satellite rights of other languages yet to be sold and they can fetch another 8-10 Cr depending on the films result. Producer of this film has made a minimum 20 Cr profit and now it’s up for the film to do the same for the buyers.

SPY is one of the most challenging films ever done by hero Nikhil. The film directed by Garry BH will see him in the role of a SPY who is on a mission to unfold India’s best-kept secret of what that it happened to Subhash Chandra Bose after the airplane crash in 1945.

SPY marks the first movie for Nikhil to play a RAW Agent. Besides undergoing a makeover, he needed to work hard to learn a few things to play the character. He underwent complete training in weapon handling, all facets of RAW work, and self-defense techniques including the Israeli Krav Maga.

Krav Maga is derived from a combination of techniques used in aikido, judo, karate, boxing, and wrestling.

Nikhil also met former RAW agents and spies to understand many aspects, including their body language.

Garry BH said, “The output has come out well. Nikhil, thank you so much. I wouldn’t have been here without you. The movie is releasing on June 29th. We don’t have any issues with who was given the credit for Independence. But we’ve issues with who wasn’t given the credit. You need to watch the movie to know many unknown facts.”

Nikhil said, “It’s a new attempt. Every movie is a new journey. I believe that story is the hero of any movie. We launched the teaser at Netaji’s statue in Delhi. He’s the greatest freedom fighter. People don’t know or don’t talk about the sacrifices made by Azad Hind Fouj. We did lots of research, met ex-raw officials, and found solid evidence related to Netaji. Many freedom fighters were side-lined. They should also be glorified. Spy is a historical backdrop fictional story.

All characters are fictional. The theme of the movie is well-researched. We’re directly saying that Netaji’s death is a cover-up story. Many commission reports are inconclusive about his death. The nation should know it. I accepted this movie, before Karthikeya 2. Garry is capable of becoming a big director. We’re planning to release the movie in Bengal and Marathi as well. This movie won’t hurt anybody.”

So, what’s the best-kept secret of the country? It’s about the freedom fighter and founder of the Indian National Army (INA), Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who gave the nation the slogan: ‘Tum mujhe khoon do, main tumhe azadi doonga’ (You give me blood, I will give you freedom).

Netaji’s death is still a mystery. A movie based on this hidden story is sure to amp up curiosity levels. So, ‘Spy’ clearly is not a regular movie in the espionage genre.

For the pan-India action thriller ‘SPY,’ Nikhil Siddhartha has teamed up with editor-turned-director Garry BH. The recent update by the makers hints at an exciting detail regarding the movie.

An intense action block is currently being shot, according to the recent press release by the makers. Nikhil looks perfect as a Spy here, in terms of his looks, dressing, makeover, walking style and body language. Wearing a black blazer and matching cargo pants, Nikhil appears cool and sophisticated, with classic aviator sunglasses on.

The title logo design is also very intriguing. While the letters S and Y are modelled as guns, while we can see sniper gun scope in the letter P. Both the title logo and the first look poster are impressive.
