Tax evasion is anti-national, Madras HC tells actor Joseph Vijay

2

Lashing out actor Tamil movie hero C. Joseph Vijay (cine name Vijay) for trying avoid payment of entry tax on import of an ultra-luxury Rolls Royce Ghost car, the Madras High Court ordered him to pay the tax and also levied a cost of Rs 1 lakh.

The court also strongly disapproved the actor’s action of not revealing his occupation in his affidavit and held that tax evasion is to be construed as an anti-national habit.

Vijay had imported the prestigious and costly car from the UK. While paying the import duty to the Central government, he approached the court against the payment of entry tax to the Tamil Nadu government.

The luxury car was lying idle as it could run on public roads unless it was duly registered after paying the entry tax.

The court expressed its surprise that Vijay had not even stated his profession or occupation in his affidavit.

“The petitioner, who is a reputed cine actor, is expected to pay the tax promptly and punctually,” the court said.

Noting that the petitioner/actor has large scale fan groups and those fans are seeing the actors as real heroes, the court said in Tamil Nadu, cine heroes have risen to rule the state. “… Therefore, the people are under the impression that they are the real heroes. Thus, they are not expected to behave like a reel heroes. Tax evasion is to be construed as anti-national habit, attitude and mindset and unconstitutional.”

“These actors are portraying themselves as champion to bring the social justice in the society. Their pictures are against corrupt activities in the society. But, they are evading tax and acting in a manner, which is not in consonance with the provisions of the statutes,” it held.

Pointing out that the noble perspective of the Constitution under the Directive Principles can be achieved only if the people of such stature, or the rich pay their taxes unhesitatingly and comply with the laws of the land, it said: “Filing a writ petition, avoiding payment of entry tax and keeping the writ petition pending for about nine years, can never be appreciated and it is not made clear even now, whether the entry tax as applicable has been paid by the petitioner or not.”

In a philosophical note, the court said accumulation of wealth or possessing the world’s prestigious car, Rolls Royce “would not be of any assistance for a better life in our great nation, as our country is enriched with culture and social values”.

“Thus, this court is of the considered opinion that the non-payment of entry tax by the petitioner, can never be appreciated and the petitioner has not respected nor responded to the lakhs and lakhs of his fans, who has paid by viewing his movies and from and out of such money, the petitioner/actor purchased the world’s prestigious car for his personal usage,” it said.

“The reputed persons of this great nation should realise that the money that reaches them is from the poor man’s blood and from their hard-earned money and not from the sky,” the court added.

“In the absence of payment of entry tax by the petitioner within a period of two weeks, the respondents are directed to initiate all further actions by following the procedures as contemplated under the statutes for recovery of the entry tax from the petitioner as well as the consequential liability, if any, as per the provisions of the Act and the Rules,” it ruled.

The court ordered Vijay to pay Rs 1 lakh to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Covid-19 Public Relief Fund, within a period of two weeks from the date of receipt of a copy of its order.

Income Tax officials at actor Vijay’s residence once again

0

Over a month after the Income Tax department carried out search operations at actor Vijay’s residence here, officials from the department were once again seen at the actor’s place on Thursday for some documents’ verification, sources said.

The sources added that the documents are said to have been seized during their earlier searches.

Last month, as a part of search operations at AGS Group, the Income Tax officials had brought Vijay from Neyveli where he was shooting for his next movie.

Later, in a statement last week, the department said Vijay’s investment in immovable properties and remuneration received from the AGS Group for acting in a film (Bigil) was the focus of the search.

The tax department also claimed to have detected Rs 300 crore hidden income during searches at Anbu Chezhiyan’s residence and office located here and in Madurai.

Anbu Chezhiyan is a film financier and also owns a movie production house.

About 38 premises were searched in Chennai and Madurai. The highlight was the seizure of Rs 77 crore unaccounted cash, purportedly belonging to the financier, from various hideouts, the IT department said.

A large number of property documents, promissory notes and post-dated cheques collected as collateral security were seized during the search.

“As per the evidence detected during the search, the concealment is likely to exceed Rs 300 crore,” the tax department said.

The department also searched the residence of one of the promoters of AGS Group Kalpathi S. Aghoram and a movie distributor who is also into the real estate business.

The accounts available at the AGS Group office, including evidence of actual receipts and expenses and remuneration paid to artistes were being scrutinised.

All documents in original, belonging to the distributor, were recovered from his friend’s house which was being used to stash them.

BJP tax politics against Tamil top hero

0

The Income Tax department is actively targetting major non-BJP leaders across the country. In 2019, IT raids gave sleepless nights to TDP leaders in AP. But, now their immediate target has become Tamil top hero Vijay. The reason is that the BJP is suspecting future threat from him in TN politics. As of now, the BJP is having total control on the present AIADMK government which is almost reduced to a puppet in the hands of the Centre.

Vijay has come under the scanner in the past few years. Because, he is choosing such films loaded with political irony and sarcasm. The public talk is also that the actor may sooner or later take the final plunge into politics. Whatever, the gossips around Vijay’s political entry are posing big risks for the BJP future plans to tighten its grip on the state.

Quite unusually, the IT officials questioned Vijay for hours together for two to three days. Analysts say that a clear message is given to the actor on what would happen in future if he embarrasses the BJP in any way.

Analysis – ‘Bigil’ is Vijay’s show all the way

0

For a film that speaks stridently on women’s empowerment and the sins of sexism, “Bigil” is awfully enamoured of its male protagonist who all but preens when he is on screen. The camera clings to Vijay like a Siamese twin letting go of him only long enough for the incidental characters (and that includes leading lady Nayanthara) to let us know how privileged they are to be in the same narrative as Vijay/Bigil.

Bigil, which means ‘whistle’ in Tamil, lives up to its title. There were wolf whistlers and banshee shrieks of orgasmic exhilaration in the theatre every time Vijay came on screen. I couldn’t hear the dialogues. I suspect we are not meant to. Considering he has two roles, Vijay is on screen almost the entire running-time of three hours. He plays an angry football coach, not unlike Shah Rukh Khan in “Chak De! India”, except that Khan never danced, sang and fought goons (in the one fight sequence in “Chak De!” he let his hockey team to beat up the goons).

Vijay never stops. The career dilemma for a superstar who must deliver what his fans want is here resolved by positioning Vijay as a star with human frailties on display. He is a football coach and prone to bouts of identity crisis because of a troubled relationship with his father, which is opened up like a wound in a flashback.

As his own father, Vijay is not too convincing. His body language suggests no age. Only suppressed rage. The son Bigil (aka Michael) is Shah Rukh Khan’s “Chak De!” avatar reborn. There are flashes of genuine warmth in Michael’s interaction with his all-women’s football team which, though representational (one acid victim, etc) manages to make a large statement on why women are left behind in the field of sports.

Interestingly even the most empowered women in Indian cinema need a masculine hand to triumph. In this week’s Bollywood release “Saandh Ki Aankh” the dedicated coach played by Vineet Kumar ensures success for the two sharp-shooting women heroes. Here it is Bigil the coach with a fist of fury and a heart of gold who encourages and supports the female footballers.

Director Atlee doesn’t allow Vijay’s stardom to diminish even as sections show the actor struggling with issues that go beyond patriarchal arrogance. It would be too much to expect humility in Vijay’s performance. But he comes closer to vulnerability in this film than any other. Tragically the powerful-in-her-own-right Nayanthara happily plays the hero’s prop, for the second time in a row after “Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy”.

The plot is a sprawling arc of exploding emotions. The cast is vast. But all we are allowed to come home with is Vijay, multiplied by two, and divided by a conflict between playing to the galleries and playing the coach as sincerely as Shah Rukh Khan once did.

But that was another game.

A 50ft cutout at RTC X-Roads for Tamil Superstar

0

Thalapathy Vijay has not yet secured a steady market for his movies in Telugu states. But things are slowly changing. For the first time, huge cutouts of Vijay are being erected at single screens for his upcoming release ‘Whistle’.

The Telugu presenter of the movie will be erecting a huge 50-ft cut out of Vijay at the main theater Sandhya at RTC X Roads in Hyderabad. Such massive cutouts are reserved only for Telugu mass heroes. With ‘Whistle’, Vijay wants to grab the market for his movies here.

‘Whistle’ is directed by Atlee who is one of the most successful directors in South India. The film is riding high on expectations. It is said to be made on the lines of ‘Chak De India’. But hero playing dual roles of a father and son has given the new dimension. Set for October 25th release, ‘Whistle’ is simultaneously releasing in Tamil and Telugu languages

Sarkar Review – Unconvincing political drama !

Sarkar Tamil Movie Review Sarkar (2018) Review Rating

Telugu360 Rating 2.5/5

The blockbuster combination of AR Murugadoss and Vijay, which gave super hits like Thuppaki and Kaththi, reunited for a political thriller named Sarkar. The teasers and trailers have generated a solid buzz on the film and AR Rahman composed the tunes. Will AR Murugadoss and Vijay continue their success streak ? Let’s find out.

Story :

NRI, USA based GL Company CEO, Billionaire Sundar Ramasamy visits India to cast his vote on Election Day. After being rejected his right to vote, Sundar gets determined to fight a legal battle with the election commission. His fight with electioneering process, very soon turns into a political rivalry with the ruling party. As re-elections approach, Sundar decides to directly take on the chief minister in the latter’s own constituency. Rest of the film revolves around how Sundar tries to outsmart formidable ruling party, how the ruling party tries to counter his activities…

Performances:

Vijay as Sundar carries this film solely on his shoulders. Keerthi Suresh as politician’s daughter got a lengthy role but insignificant. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar is the surprise pack, as CM’s daughter she played the villain role. Yogi Babu Comedy is decent and is limited three scenes though. Radha ravi is a good fit for the political role.

Analysis :

SARKAR takes off in an interesting manner but turns superficial as it progresses. Initial scenes such as Introduction Song, Sundar’s entry to India, Rejection of his vote were fast paced. However, from there the story’s primary point isn’t much convincing. Why would election commission or courts would cancel already completed elections in entire state if one person couldn’t cast his vote? No matter how many legal cases are filed, such decision is far from reality. However, first half is an average as it is stuffed with commercial elements to appeal Vijay Fans. Second half is not up to the mark. Climax, pre-climax scenes have many unconvincing elements. On Election Day, hero gets some credible evidence against the ruling party chief. But Sundar waits until 2PM before go live on Facebook to disclose the video to the voters. By that time 53% voting is done. On Election Day contesting candidates are not supposed to do canvassing to influence the voters is another major point Murugadoss has missed. The mind game between Varalaxmi , Sundar hasn’t been told in engaging manner. For Vijay fans this film may work because of fan moments at regular intervals.

Couple of fights and background score stand out. Finally, this film is far below than the Vijay – Murugadoss’s previous combo ‘ Katthi ‘ , and doesn’t even match Vijay’s previous film ‘ Mersal ‘

Verdict:

SARKAR is very strictly for Vijay Fans. This film has been designed, executed as an out and out political drama to fulfil hero Vijay’s real life political ambitions. Director Murugadoss has come up with an unconvincing plot, infused some commercial elements at regular intervals.
